Science Department Lab Assistant Position Description Role Description The Lab Assistant is a support role for the Science Department. They will assist Science staff with ensuring all practical aspects of the work is compliant with legislated WHS requirements and in supporting teaching staff with the practical elements of their programs and classes. This is a full time, Level 2 Assistant permanent position (term time only) commencing in Term 3, 2017. Reporting Relationship The Lab Assistant is ultimately responsible to the Principal in all aspects of the position and directly responsible to the Head of Science. Role Responsibilities The following list is indicative of the responsibilities attached to the role. The Principal may assign additional duties from time to time. The candidate will (under the direction of the Head of Science and in collaboration with the full time Lab Assistant):
Provide technical support to the Science Department Order resources for practical requirements of a Science Department Manage the timely preparation of laboratory equipment and resources for Science classes
Prepare solutions, stains and media for use in the laboratory
Employ safe work practices in the Science laboratory by applying WHS legislation
Manage the safe storage and disposal of chemicals and biological materials in accordance with regulations
Manage the safe storage and maintenance of laboratory equipment and materials
Carry out or facilitate specialist cleaning of laboratory equipment and laboratory preparation areas
Assist Science teaching staff with demonstrations
Care for the science department fauna appropriately
Prepare risk assessments for preparation tasks
Maintain a chemical and equipment inventory
Manufacture simple resources for laboratory usage
Collect and maintains living specimens appropriately
Assist with the science budget
Carry out appropriate labelling of chemicals
Develop maintenance procedures for laboratory equipment
Liaise with organisations and industries in relation to equipment that is malfunctioning or to make recommendations to purchase.
Trial experiments or procedures
Create and maintains chemical and equipment data bases
Carry out first aid when required
Key Competencies
Possesses an understanding of general science concepts and has qualified with Diploma of Applied Science or equivalent or a Certificate IV with significant experience or extensive experience in a related field.
Has a strong understanding of WHS Act, regulations and relevant codes of practice, risk assessment and hazard management, SDS management.
Holds a current NSW Driver’s license as there is a requirement for shopping and collecting items eg hearts for dissection
First Aid qualifications and training
Strong practical skills such as capacity to fix electrical circuits etc
Understands the legislation for ethical use and care of animals.
Mathematically capable in order to make accurate calculations when diluting chemicals or making up solutions of a particular molarity
Effective research skills in seeking out new technologies, practicals and or resources for staff
