elcome to the second round of the 2018 SP Tools Australian Kart Championship, presented by Castrol EDGE and hosted by the Albury Wodonga Kart Club.
After a sensational opening round in South Australia where more than 280 competitors lined up, it is pleasing to see 274 entries received for this weekend’s second of five rounds. To see so many new faces adorn the top step of the podium in Monarto was very pleasing, it shows that we have a lot of new talent coming through the ranks in the SP Tools Australian Kart Championship. From Junior Sprockets graduate Rusty Ponting taking the win in Cadet 9, through to young gun Aaron Cameron dominating KZ2, it’s fantastic to see. The battle for many of the Championships are already beginning to take shape with seven of the nine championship standings having six points or less separating the leader and second place. Only Cameron’s domination of KZ2 and Valentino Astuti’s consistency in KA2 has them with a handy buffer at the top of their respective standings. With the Wodonga Karting Complex being a new venue for the Championship, it is an even playing field for the majority of competitors and should produce some high-speed and exciting racing. As always, it’s a pleasure to have our partners of the SP Tools Australian Karting Championship along for the ride, with SP Tools and Castrol EDGE playing a large part in ensuring the Championship continues to be the largest Championship in the Southern Hemisphere. Alongside SP Tools and Castrol EDGE, the Championship is greatly supported by Mercedes-Benz Vans, Bridgestone, Dunlop, IAME, MG Tyres and Vortex engines. We thank all of these valued partners for their continued support. A special thank you to James Reynolds and his hardworking crew in preparation of this weekend’s event. ABOUT THE SP TOOLS AUSTRALIAN KART CHAMPIONSHIP The five-round SP Tools Australian Kart Championship, presented by Castrol EDGE is the highest level of karting competition in Australia. There are nine classes vying for National honours in the Championship across various age divisions. In the underage divisions, drivers compete in the Cadet 9, Cadet 12, KA4 Junior and elite KA2 class using the Vortex Mini Rok, IAME KA100 Reedjet and Vortex DVS-J engines. Senior competitors have the selection of five classes – three Classes that have a pathway from the Club, Zonal and State-level Compeittion (KA3 Senior, TaG 125 and X30) and two high-powered elite Classes (KA1 and KZ2). The 2018 Championship begins this weekend at the Monarto Karting Complex located just outside of Murray Bridge in South Australia. Round two of the Championship will be contested in Albury for the first time before the teams heads to Newcastle to mark the halfway point in the Championship on May 25-27. The penultimate round will be contested in Central Queensland on July 27-29. The Go-Kart Club of Victoria will host the Grand Final at

the Port Melbourne Karting Complex on August 31 – September 2. Over the years, the Port Melbourne venue has been the scene of some of the most memorable races in Australian karting and 2018 will see the Australian Kart Champions decided at the venue. Round 1 - February 23-25

Drew Price inducted into Hall of Fame Australian karting icon Drew Price was inducted into the Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame in Melbourne recently. The Hall of Fame is an initiative driven by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport and brings together every discipline of motorsport in Australia, and sees legends from Formula 1, Touring Car racing, Motorcycling, Speedway, Drag Racing, Rallying and Karting inducted each year. Price joins dual World Karting Champion James Courtney and 15-time Australian Champion John Pizarro as inductees for their karting prowess. Danilo Rossi to be trackside Five-time world champion DR Racing Kart Danilo Rossi will be on hand in Albury this weekend to support the DR Racing Kart Australia team. Local Dunlop Super2 Series driver Jordan Boys is this weekend making his KZ2 debut with the team, which will also field rising South Australian talent Reuben Goodall in KA4 Junior.
NEWS FROM THE PADDOCK Grid Kids still on a high A number of Cadet and Junior drivers competing this weekend are still on a high following the excitement of the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix recently. 58 drivers and a parent were guests of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation and Formula 1 with the youngsters enjoying the opportunity to be on the circuit as a part of the pre-race entertainment immediately prior to the start of the race. The ‘Grid Kids’ dotted the grid from front to back with some holding the National Flag of a drivers, others marking the grid and some standing in front of the current crop of drivers as the national anthem was being sung.

CLUB DRIVER RANKINGS RACE LOCALLY, RANK NATIONALLY The SP Tools Club Driver Rankings is a national point score system designed to provide the Club-level racer with extra incentives to compete at their local venues more often. Drivers will race locally, but be ranked nationally, while vying for significant prizes in both their Group and specific Class. The first rankings for the 2018 SP Tools Club Driver Rankings (CDR) from the opening rounds of CDR Race Meetings across the country were released recently. The current SP Tools Rankings on www.clubdriverrankings. com.au have been calculated from the meetings contested in affiliated Clubs throughout March. Drivers score points in every race at each CDR meeting but only a driver’s best heat race finish and their finishing position in the final will go towards their SP Tools Ranking. A points bonus is also awarded to the winner in the final. Drivers can enter a maximum of eight meetings at any one club, where the six best point scores will count towards their SP Tools Ranking in your chosen Class and Competition Group. A full list of Race Meetings that have been nominated to be included in the CDR can be found under the Participating Tracks and Dates tab on: www.clubdriverrankings.com.au The SP Tools Ranking will be updated on a regular basis from now until the end of October when the final SP Tools Ranking for 2018 will be decided. Thanks to SP Tools and other industry partners, there’s $50,000 in prizes up for grabs in the 2018 SP Tools Club Driver Rankings. Included in the prize pool are eight SP Tools invertor generators, 24 SP Tools impact driver, cordless drill and light packages, 28 SP Tools karting tool kits, 12 annual Karting Australia racing licences, multiple sets of Bridgestone, Dunlop, MG and Vega tyres.
