How to transform easy-to find herbs into soup for the whole family

According to traditional Chinese medicine, the Liver is the organ that is most affected by excess stress or emotions. Feel it, express it, but don’t hold it! Are you often irritable? Do things stress you out easily? Your Liver is telling you that its function is becoming out of balance.

Lung Too much sadness and grieving can harm the Lung and its partner, the Large Intestine. “ Letting things go” is a healthy way to stimulate your Lung’s function and get rid of physical and emotional baggage.

草 药 Heart True cardiovascular health is not just about physical fitness, it’s about deep contentment with one’s life and destiny. Happiness and love are often associated with the Heart representing a state of peacefulness. Stress can directly impact this organ’s function.

The substances TCM practitioners most commonly use can come from different leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds of plants such as cinnamon bark, ginger, ginseng, licorice, and rhubarb. Ginseng is the most broadly used substance for the broadest set of treatments. If a practitioner recommends Chinese herbology as a treatment, the herbs are combined into a formula that is dispensed in the form of a traditional tea, capsule, liquid extract, granule, or powder. The effectiveness of Chinese herbology still remains poorly documented.

introduction

1.

The Regenerative Power of Chinese Herbs The relationship between plants and humans is as deeply intimate as it is utterly unique. The great mother of human life, plants have nurtured and sustained us with their essences and energies for as long as we have lived on Earth. Whether it be through the foods and herbal medicines they provide, or their role in maintaining the air we breathe, plants are essential for our very existence. They are also central to rejuvenation: The perfect mediators of yin and yang, plants, especially Chinese herbal medicines, are full of the qualities and substances that make the regenerative life possible. As Michael Pollan wrote in his excellent book The Botany of Desire, our evolution is closely woven together with that of plants. Over the many millennia of human history, plants have grown and changed in order to fulfill all kinds of basic human needs and desires: our yearning for sweetness, beauty, and health, even our desire for intoxication. Remarkably adaptable, medicinal healing plants can change their programming and processes from generation to generation in order to give us exactly what we want. We live from the bounty of a garden alive with living plants.

This is not to say all the Earth’s plants are sweet and benign—it is not all papayas and apples out there. But even the deadliest plants, when properly prepared, can serve life. Most of us know the old tale of the Chinese herbal medicine doctor who sends his students out into the countryside in search of substances without medicinal value: The wisest students, despite their best efforts, return empty-handed. Everything on the Earth can have medicinal value for someone, sometime. This profound diversity—not to mention the untold wonders we have yet to discover—makes the rapid and unchecked destruction of the Earth’s eco-systems all the more worrying. As our exploitation of the Earth’s resources pushes the Earth’s systems further and further out of balance, our happy symbiotic relationship with healing plants has begun to suffer. Many of the most helpful and useful plants and Chinese herbs are becoming harder and harder to find. As the world becomes more polluted, the very properties of the Earth’s medicinal herbs are beginning to change.

Chinese five elements Stand for five organs

3. Five Major Organs Modern quantum science as well as the ancient teachings of Chinese medicine say that everything is energy. Everything that makes up a human being, mind-body-spirit, correlates at an energetic level to something “external” in nature. We can use the vibrational frequency of nature and these principles of natural law to heal and balance our bodies and emotions. This principle of interconnectedness also applies between different physical aspects of our bodies. For example, the Kidney organ correlates with the tissue of bone/teeth, the sensory taste of salt, the sensory organ of the ear, and the areas of the lower back, knees, and the heels/feet.

Lung Health:

Heart Health:

Too much sadness and grieving can harm the Lung and its partner, the Large Intestine. “Letting things go” is a healthy way to stimulate your Lung’s function and get rid of physical and emotional baggage.

True cardiovascular health is not just about physical fitness, it’s about deep contentment with one’s life and destiny. Happiness and love are often associated with the Heart representing a state of peacefulness. Stress or lack of selfexpression can directly impact this organ’s function.

Liver Health: According to traditional Chinese medicine, the Liver is the organ that is most affected by excess stress or emotions. Feel it, express it, but don’t hold it! Are you often irritable? Do things stress you out easily? Your Liver is telling you that its function is becoming out of balance.

5.

6 Traditional Chinese Medicine Techniques Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) encompasses several methods designed to help patients achieve and maintain health. To follow are 6 modern therapeutic methods used, including acupuncture.

Acupuncture

Tui Na Massage

Cupping/Scraping

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting needles into the superficial skin, subcutaneous tissue, and muscles at particular acupuncture points and manipulating them. In TCM, there are as many as 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body that are connected by 12 main meridians. These meridians conduct energy, or “Qi,” between the surface of the body and its internal organs. Acupuncture is believed to keep the balance between Yin and Yang, thus allowing for the normal flow of “Qi” throughout the body and restoring health to the mind and body.

Tui na (a combination of massage, acupressure, and other forms of body manipulation) is a form of Asian bodywork therapy that has been used in China for centuries. In a typical tui na session, the patient remains clothed and sits on a chair. The practitioner will ask a series of questions and then begin treatment. The type of massage delivered by a tui na practitioner can be quite vigorous at times. Practitioners may use herbal compresses, ointments, and heat to enhance these techniques. Tui na is best suited for treating musculoskeletal conditions.

Cupping is a type of Chinese massage, consisting of placing several glass or plastic “cups” (open spheres) on the body. TCM practitioners warm the cups using a cotton ball or other flammable substance, which is then placed inside the cup to remove all the oxygen. The practitioner then removes the substance and places the cup against the skin. The air in the cup then cools, creating lower pressure inside the cup, creating a vacuum and allowing cup to stick to skin.

.草药/」

Moxibustion Moxibustion is a therapy that involves burning moxa (mugwort root) made from dried Artimesia vulgaris (spongy herb) to facilitate healing. Burning moxa produces a great deal of smoke and a pungent odor that often is confused with that of cannabis. The purpose of moxibustion is to warm and invigorate the blood, stimulate the flow of Qi, strengthen the kidney Yang, expel wind and disperse cold, and dissolve stagnation. Historically, this therapy had been used to treat menstrual pain.

Chinese Herbs The substances TCM practitioners most commonly use can come from different leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds of plants such as cinnamon bark, ginger, ginseng, licorice, and rhubarb. Ginseng is the most broadly used substance for the broadest set of treatments. If a practitioner recommends Chinese herbology as a treatment, the herbs are combined into a formula that is dispensed in the form of a traditional tea, capsule, liquid extract, or powder. The effectiveness of Chinese herbology still remains poorly documented.

Chinese Nutrition Chinese nutrition is a mode of dieting rooted in Chinese understandings of the effects of food on the human organism. In Chinese nutrition, a balanced diet is one that includes all 5 tastes—spicy (warming), sour (cooling), bitter (cooling), sweet (strengthening), and salty (cooling). Foods that have a particular taste tend to have particular properties. There are no forbidden foods or “one size fits all” diets in Chinese nutrition. In TCM, nutrition is considered the first line of defense in health matters.

Tongue Diagnosis Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners use 5 basic methods of diagnosis in their assessments, including looking, listening, smelling, asking, and touching. Inspection not only focuses on the patient’s physical appearance and behavior, but it also pays particular attention on the tongue. A TCM practitioner’s analysis of the tongue will include its size, shape, tension, color, and coating. Below is a diagram of all the channels/meridians reaching the tongue areas that correspond to internal organs in TCM.

7.

Tongue body color: indicates the state of blood, organs, and Qi Tongue body shape: reflects the state of blood and Qi, and indicates excess or deficiency Tongue body features (eg., teeth marks may indicate that the tongue rests against the teeth. This is often a sign of a digestive disorder or (e.g. red dots) may indicate heat or inflammation in the blood Tongue body moisture: reveals the state of fluids in the body Tongue coating: indicates the state of organs, especially the stomach Tongue coat thickness (e.g. thick) may indicate an imbalance in digestion or (e.g. peeled) may be associated with allergic disorders and autoimmune diseases Tongue body cracks (including the direction of the cracks) could be a sign of a yeast infection or a biotin deficiency

.舌/」

Tongue coat root: indicates impairment of organs if it is not attached to the tongue’s surface

The tongue has various features that indicate various bodily functions:

True cardiovascular health is not just about physical fitness, it’s about deep contentment with one’s life and destiny. Happiness and love are often associated with the Heart representing a state of peacefulness. Stress or lack of self-expression can directly impact organ’s function. The Heart, according to Chinese medicine, is the king of all organs. This means that all the other organs will sacrifice for the Heart. In other words, they will always give their energy to help the Heart maintain its balance. The Hearts partner is the Small Intestine.

The Stomach is the “child” of the Heart. If the Stomach is functioning well then the mother, the Heart is happy or less impacted. In this simple analogy we understand that Stomach energy must be in balance for Heart energy to be balanced. The Five Element chart also shows us that the Liver is the “mother” of the Heart. When a person is under continual stress, Liver energy becomes compromised because one of its energetic functions is to smooth and regulate emotions. So when chronic stress or excessive emotion is experienced, the Liver cannot offer proper support to Heart. Because of these important relationships as described by Five Element Theory, if you want to really take care of your cardiovascular health, it’s crucial to take care of your digestive organs, the Liver and the Stomach!

Lung/Large Intestine Health

Autumn is the season associated with the Lung and its partner, the Large Intestine. If you tend to catch colds or have allergies in the Fall, it’s important to take care of these organs! The nose is the sensory organ related to the Lung. Runny nose, sneezing, congested sinuses, loss of smell, are all symptoms of compromised Lung function. The skin is the tissue associated with the Lung. If you want to have healthy, clear, wrinkle-free skin, it’s important to take care of the Lung and the Large Intestine! The taste that corresponds to and supports the Lung is spicy, according to Five Element theory. Sadness and grief are the emotions associated with the Lung and Large Intestine. If you cry easily or have trouble processing grief and loss, you may have an imbalance in your Lung energy.

Too much sadness and grieving can harm the Lung and its partner, the Large Intestine. “ Letting things go” is a healthy way to stimulate your Lung’s function and get rid of physical and emotional baggage.

Liver/Gallbladder According to Five Element Theory 1

The Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi and blood in your body. It controls the volume and smooth flow of blood in your vessels and also stores the blood. The eyes are the sensory organ related to the Liver. If you have any eye issues, including blurry vision, red or dry eyes, itchy eyes, it may be a sign deep down that your Liver is not functioning smoothly. The tendons are the tissue associated with the Liver. TCM says that strength comes from the tendons, not muscles. Be like the cat that is strong, agile, and flexible, not the cow, which has huge muscles but little real strength. The taste that corresponds to and supports the Liver is sour. If you crave sour foods, that may be your Liver communicating that it needs an extra boost, so be sure to include high-quality vinegar and sweet and sour recipes in your diet. Anger is the emotion associated with the Liver. If you are often irritable, get angry easily, have trouble unwinding from the day’s activities, have trouble reasoning or going with the flow and letting things go, you are experiencing a Liver function problem. Experiencing these emotions chronically or excessively can seriously unbalance the function of your Liver.

You can use these basic guidelines to begin to understand what organs may be asking for support. In the case of the Liver, if you constantly crave sour foods, or are under a great deal of stress and feel angered easily, then your Liver function needs support. Use these ‘signs” to re-balance yourself.
