WELCOME LETTER Hello readers Well, finally spring is here and there’s a definite feeling of positivity in the air! The daffs are blooming, leaves are appearing on the trees, the air is warmer, and everything is looking a little brighter. Almost a year on from when life first went a little ‘wonky’, shall we say, it’s beginning to look like the end may be in sight. It’s been a very long and dark tunnel but, with the vaccine being rolled out successfully in the UK and in many other countries across the globe, we can see a glimmer of light. The national effort in getting the vaccines out has been phenomenal, with vast numbers of NHS workers, army personnel and volunteers all giving their time to help fight this pandemic. The amount of people who’ve stepped up, given their halo a polish, and done all sorts of wonderful things to help others over this last twelve months has been truly inspiring. There are many heart-warming tales of how people have come together in mutual support, despite being kept apart physically; these will no doubt be remembered for years to come as the positive side of this whole terrible situation. Of course, we now have the Government’s ‘roadmap’ out of lockdown and, hopefully, back to some semblance of normality – businesses are preparing for gradual and staggered reopening and families and friends are looking forward to being reunited. At present, the focus is on that ‘magic’ date of 21st June when, if all goes according to plan and the figures suggest it’s safe to do so, the limits on social contact will be removed and we can once again socialise freely. There will no doubt be a LOT of hugging going on that day! What an emotional time it will be – over this past year we truly have realised the value of our friends, families and freedom. It goes without saying that as we gradually emerge from this situation our local businesses will need your support more than ever. Let’s show them how much we’ve missed them and help our local

economy to come back even stronger! Well done, and thanks, to all the local businesses who’ve managed to survive through this, often adapting their services and working hard to bring us, their customers, what we’ve wanted and needed throughout this trying time. One such business is Morley Hayes Hotel which, like many others in the hospitality industry, began to offer takeaways. Zipper-dedoo-dah! As we continue to navigate turbulent times, let’s take a moment to consider something we use every day but probably don’t give much of a thought to. The humble zip. A useful and practical invention. This clever fastener features on many different items: clothing, boots, camping equipment, bags, pencil cases, sporting equipment, sleeping bags and much more. However, its invention was not heralded as the life-changing creation that it eventually became.

In 1969, when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon, his astronaut suit was zipped up by a YKK zipper. Try and imagine a world without the zip! Although, not having a zip may reduce painful accidents when it comes to fastening trousers...

April 29th is hailed as Zipper Day in memory of the day Elias Howe applied for a patent. Personally, I think that the sound of the zip should be crowned the official sound of camping. Zipping up the tent and listening to the sound of rain pattering on canvas. Then, the morning chorus of zipping as camping neighbours emerge from their tents to take their first wellingtoned wee walk. Anyway, back to the zip... The first prototype was created by Elias Howe, the inventor of the sewing machine. In 1893, Whitcomb Judson marketed a ‘clasp locker’ but it wasn’t a great success either. It wasn’t until 1913, when Gideon Sundbank created a much improved version called a “separable fastener” that it began to gain more attention. The name “zipper” was associated with the invention much later. At first, zips were only used on tobacco pouches and boots. So it was many years until they became an important and integral part of the fashion industry. In the 1930s, the zipper beat the button in the ‘Battle of the Fly’ as the preferred closure of men’s trousers. Apparently, it removed “the possibility of unintentional and embarrassing disarray”. From this victory, zips increased in popularity to become a key feature in clothing. Nowadays, thousands of miles of zips are produced every day. You might have noticed the letters YKK on your zips? That’s because this Japanese company accounts for nearly half the global zipper market. You might say they have the lion’s share zipped up. Every year they produce enough zippers to wrap round the world 50 times!

Just a Thought... Beauty and the Feast

I want to confess something to you, Dear Readers, as I feel we have earned this level of transparency: we ate chocolate Santas for breakfast. There, I said it. It happened. As myself and my two children found ourselves, once again, Living La Vida Lockdown and I broke the news that school was, once again, on hold for the foreseeable, a certain melancholy descended. Much like a cold cup of cabbage soup it filled us with a sense of limited freedoms.

Do you know, the beauty in that letting go of all expectations just for a moment was truly liberating. Peeling the shiny cover off and inhaling the aroma of our decadent morning fayre was frivolously fabulous. The kids chomped through theirs in under 2 minutes, while I savoured the sense of sagacity that this small action had afforded me. I learned that these are not normal times, and the usual rules can be relaxed, perhaps even broken in the name of mental wellbeing. We need to hold ourselves accountable, yes, but we also need to allow ourselves some of the few freedoms that remain in this most uncertain of times. Speaking of time it is nearly lunch… so I should probably get changed out of these PJ’s! Stay safe and well and give yourselves a well-earned break.

My son, who tends to be hungry at any given time of the day, opened the cupboard. Like a shiny, foiled, frilled beacon of joy – there they were. Left over from Christmas, the chocolate Santas beckoned us to replace our Weetabix and fruit with their nutritionally void yet soul fulfilling joy for our breakfast of choice. The mother in me internally cried ‘No – it’ll be wearing pyjamas until noon next’, but the human in me actually said, ‘Let’s do it!’ So we did.

Forget covens and Judas and the fact that some airlines omit row 13 for seating, have you tried cutting a cake into thirteen pieces? Someone’s bound to be unlucky. Shadows (sciophobia) – They’re always with you, silently judging you, except in the darkness of course (which is another fear – scotophobia). Although Apache by The Shadows is still a cracking instrumental.

Trees (hylophobia) – Despite the misheard folk wisdom that trees are a jolly good fellow, they ruin your lawn, block out the light, encourage squirrels and, very occasionally, fall on your house. Timber! Feet (podophobia) – This is a fear you can truly never walk away from! It’s probably an evolution of our natural aversion to ‘Stilton toes’, discoloured nails, and feeling down at heel. Beards (pogonophobia) – Remember being sat on a red, fat, bearded stranger as a child, sometime in December? For others it could be Darwinian or Freudian because beards suggest maturity and no one wants to grow up! Loud Noises (phonophobia) – Hmm…football terrace chants, other people’s mobile phone conversations, screaming babies, barking dogs and flatulent senior citizens who are hard of hearing…it makes perfect sense. Travel: Discovering the Scottish Highlands If you’re on the hunt for a staycation closer to home instead of your usual holiday abroad, the Scottish Highlands should definitely be on your radar. 1. Hike or ski Ben Nevis

You could easily spend days exploring the mountains, lochs, rivers, forests and villages of this mammoth national park, but if you’re short on time don’t leave out a visit to Balmoral Castle – Queen Victoria’s favourite – and a ride on the Cairngorm Mountain Railway. As you explore, look out for the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd, the UK’s only free-grazing reindeer! Beer: Pentrich Brewery Pentrich Brewery have, for some time, been making some quality hop forward beers which have been available in cask, keg and, more recently, in cans. I asked Ryan Cummings, co-owner, what can people expect from their beers? We are probably best known for our super hoppy and hazy cask beers locally, and now with our cans being in a much wider circulation we’re starting to build a bit of a reputation for producing big hoppy IPAs in cans now, too. We have always been proud of the eclectic range of beers we have been focused on producing since day one. Ultimately, we brew beer with an emphasis on flavour, and styles that we are both passionate about. We make sure we execute each beer to the best of our ability, and strive to produce beer that we both like – with the hope that other people will too! Your move into small pack looked like a sublime move, with the onset of the pandemic; something that clearly doesn’t happen overnight. What was your thought process on making that switch and at the same time a rebranding exercise? We were certainly very lucky with regards to the timing of moving to small pack, releasing our first batch of cans in January 2020 – just before the true scale of the pandemic was realised. We had always been keen to get our beers out in small pack ever since we started the brewery, however it wasn’t until we’d upscaled on to our current brew system in November 2019 that we were happy to proceed with producing beers in cans. The key factor, when putting the beers into small pack, is ensuring that the quality isn’t compromised by doing so. When we were on our old cobbled together 6BBL brew kit that just wasn’t something we could guarantee. We had a short spell where we hand bottled our beers back in the days when we were cuckoo brewing, around 2015, but we felt the quality of the beer suffered due to the process so we quickly knocked it on the head. Cask beer will always be a part of what we do. It was the lifeblood of our brewery for the first 4 years, and we are incredibly passionate and proud of the cask beers we have produced so far, so we can’t wait to get back to producing it!

Over the festive period, you treated us to great beers, which could be seen as a bit of a diversification from your USP: a great Scotch Ale, Smoked Porter and Imperial Stout. Could we expect to see any of these types of beers returning throughout the calendar year? We will be looking to continue to release a broad range of styles over the next 12 months. With a couple of lagers on the way very soon, as well as our first foray into sour beers too. The pales and IPAs will continue to be the bread and butter of the business but we will always look to keep our range of beers as expansive and as exciting as possible! Do you have any aspirations to have your own little tap room, be it in the brewery or in a more centralised location? We certainly have talked about setting ourselves up with a tap room – so that will definitely be on the cards once things eventually get back to some sign of normality. We were actually actively exploring this avenue just before the first lockdown occurred. In hindsight we were probably quite lucky that we hadn’t quite got it over the line. If we do get around to opening one then it will most likely be in a centralised location rather than at the brewery itself. We’ve always talked about setting one up in Derby, but we will just have to see, I guess…

Word on Wine In February, I attended an online tasting sponsored by Waitrose and the Love Wine team to highlight the problems that the South African wine industry was currently facing. Back at the start of the COVID-19 restrictions in the spring of 2020, the South African Government imposed restrictions banning the sale of alcohol including wine, beer and spirits. This was lifted in mid-August but with the recent surge in cases in the New Year a total ban was re-imposed on all sales of alcohol. The thought being that it would reduce alcohol related admissions to hospital and they also blamed alcohol for promoting social gatherings which allow the virus to be transmitted. The ban on domestic sales of wine has lasted for 14 weeks, plus 5 weeks of restricted sale and a further 5 weeks of export sales has left the industry reeling. Two industry bodies, Vinpro and Wines of South Africa, which represent wineries for both domestic and internal sales, estimate that the industry has lost the equivalent of US$400 million, with 80 wineries and 350 grape growing operations likely to shut, with 21,000 jobs lost. It is also thought that the ban will have a total effect on over 290,000 jobs. It estimates that that the domestic wine sales will be down 21% on the previous year. Being in the southern hemisphere, the winemaking season is in March in South Africa. It is estimated that between 280 > 300 million litres of wine remains unsold from the 2020 harvest, equivalent to the domestic sales in 2019. This is still in tanks awaiting bottling, with the 2021 harvest now due. A South African winemaker was at the online tasting to tell us about the problem. His final comment was that they were not looking for a handout, but just asked that we buy South African wine. So, on that point, I would like to talk about one of the wines we tasted on the night. Think of a white South African wine and we immediately think of Chenin Blanc. Chenin Blanc originated in France as one of the main grapes of the Loire region. It has been found that it grows well in virtually all wine regions, particularly in the New World. South Africa found that it grows well with the cool sea breezes and warm weather. This results in the grape being used in a full range of wines, and as a base wine for fortified wines. The wine we tasted on the night was the Kaapzicht Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2020. The wine is made using grapes from an Old Vine Project vineyard planted in 1982. They have found that these old vines give a better taste to the wine to the point that they have now catalogued and numbered all the old vines and the bottles carry a Certified Heritage Vineyard seal on the bottle.

Onions

The heaviest onion ever grown was 8.5 kg and was weighed at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show in 2014. It is estimated humans have been growing and eating onions for at least 7,000 years. China produces over 25% of the world’s onion supply. Eating fresh parsley will help take away the taste and smell of onion (and garlic) on your breath. Onions are eaten and grown in more countries than any other vegetable, with at least 175 countries producing an onion crop. And unlike wheat (the largest global crop by area harvested), the onion is a staple of every major cuisine. The sulphuric acid in onions is what causes you to cry. However, several things reduce the release of the acid: if you cut the root end last; if the onion is cold; or you cut it while holding the onion under cold running water. Wearing contact lenses also protects your eyes from the acid.

Recipe Asparagus & Salmon Mini Frittatas These colourful savoury muffins are easy to make and are delicious served warm for breakfast or cold for lunch with a salad. Asparagus is a fabulous healthy seasonal food to include, being rich in B vitamins and antioxidants like vitamin A, C and E. Serves: 4 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 23 minutes, plus cooling Gluten Free, Dairy Free Ingredients: 125g/4½ oz asparagus 1 handful of frozen peas (30g) 2 spring onions, chopped 60g/2¼ oz smoked salmon, cut into small strips 4 eggs, beaten Sea salt and ground black pepper Nutrition per serving (2 frittatas): 110kcal, fat 6.3g carbohydrates 1.6g, protein 11.2g Method: Preheat oven to 200C/400F/gas mark 6 and grease and line 8 cups of a muffin tray with paper muffin cases. Blanch the asparagus in a saucepan of boiling salted water for 2–3 minutes until just soft. Drain, then cut into 1 cm/½ in pieces using scissors.

Bake in the centre of the oven for 20 minutes or until the muffins are golden and just firm in the centre. Leave to cool for 5 minutes before removing them from the tray. Serve hot or cold.

For a vegetarian option swap the salmon for some feta cheese.

Divide the asparagus, peas, spring onions and smoked salmon among the paper cases – they should be three-quarters full. Beat the eggs in a jug with some salt and pepper, then pour into the paper cases.

Footnotes: Fit for purpose? Most people do not wear the correct shoe size for their feet. According to David G. Armstrong, Professor of Surgery at the William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, three quarters of people wear the wrong sized shoes. The reason for this may be that people stick to the size they were measured for when young and fail to realise that their feet change shape, particularly if the state of their health changes. Very few people wear the same size in any item of clothing at the age of fifty as they did at twenty, but keep cramming their feet into the same sized shoe! We also like to get the most out of our shoes, and would sooner wear them in pain than replace them even if they no longer fit. Shoe size in Britain is measured in barleycorns, a unit of measurement that stretches back to Anglo-Saxon times. Based on the length of a grain of barley, there are three barleycorns to an inch, so each shoe size adds a third of an inch in length to a shoe. A walk that explores the countryside to the north of Duffield. The route runs along the top of the Chevin with views of two contrasting valleys, before reaching the outskirts of Duffield. The return route through the Ecclesbourne Valley visits the River Ecclesbourne before climbing uphill to Hazelwood Hill. The Route 1. The start is the lay-by on Firestone just south of Farnah Green, opposite the turning to Hazelwood (grid ref. SK336463). From here take the signed public footpath, to the left of the lay-by, to emerge at a crater, reputedly the landing place for one of the few bombs dropped near Belper during the Second World War.

After passing a green gate on your right, which is where the golf course first crosses your path, look out for a gap in the wall, also on your right. Signed ‘Derwent Valley Walk’ go through the gap and head downhill, crossing two more golf course paths, to a wall. Turn right to find another gap in the wall, on the left, which you go through. Emerging from the wooded hillside you are now rewarded with views that extend across Duffield to Duffield Bank and beyond.

2. Turn left and follow the yellow arrows, which shortly lead you downhill, between two walls, where there are views to your left across The Dalley to Crich Stand. The route leads you down to North Lane, a Roman road that was used to transport iron-ore mined around Wirksworth to Duffield. Turn right and follow the wooded North Lane along the top of the Chevin. As you walk along North Lane not only are there views Looking back up the Midshires Way to the Chevin, near Duffield

4. Follow the obvious wide green path to head left downhill towards the golf club. The path follows the edge of the golf club to eventually cross a small stream. At the next corner in the field the grass track turns left uphill but you are continuing alongside the golf course, so go straight ahead across the stile/gap in the fence. Exit the field by the stile and turn right along the tarmac track towards the clubhouse. Continue on this path, past the golf club entrance, to emerge onto Avenue Road.

Health, Beauty & Fitness 5. Turn right along Avenue Road until you reach a T-junction where you turn left. Shortly after look out for the public footpath sign on the right-hand side of the road. It is slightly hidden in a hedge and directs you down what appears to be a private drive to 35 The Glen. It isn’t a private drive so take the track until very shortly you reach the entrance/gates to number 35. Take the signed path to the right of the house to eventually emerge into fields behind the church. 6. Follow the obvious path across the fields until you reach the stile onto the railway line. Cross the railway line to another stile. Immediately after crossing the second stile turn right to follow a path that initially runs parallel to the railway. Continue on this path across more fields until you are walking by the River Ecclesbourne. Where the path turns left and crosses the river, on an obvious wide bridge, don’t follow it but instead take the footpath to the right, over a stile, into the next field.

7. Once you have crossed the stile turn right to follow the footpath along the edge of the field and cross back over the railway line. The footpath then bears diagonally to your left to a stile into the next field where you continue straight ahead with the hedge on your left. At the corner of the field take the stile and bridge into the next field and cross the track on the right. Your route is uphill to Hazelwood Hill and not along this track. After negotiating the broken stile follow the track uphill across two fields with the hedge on your right. Exit the second field via a gate and bear right to the farm track. Turn right along the track to the road. Turn left and head uphill. 8. Opposite Larch Tree Farm take the public footpath on the right to bear diagonally left across the field to a group of trees. Once past these continue in the same direction to the gate/entrance to the field. Turn right and continue along the road and back to the car.

When I did this walk the entrance to the final field was very overgrown and the field had just been planted up with no allowances made for anyone attempting to follow the footpath. It may well be easier to ignore this turn and to continue along the road and to then take the first road on the right back to the car. Please maintain social distancing whilst walking. Making the switch to an electric vehicle: what you need to know Government announcements mean more EVs will be on our roads, but what do you need to know about them? Last year’s announcement by Boris Johnson that sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans will be phased out by 2030 means that electric vehicles will become an important part of our driving lives. To dispel some of the mystery, here are some of the key things to know about making the leap to an EV:

How much range do you need?

If you only make short trips around town and do fewer than 100 miles a week, for instance, then a car with a shorter range is fine. Drivers who travel further afield should consider a car with a bigger battery. Note that cars with shorter ranges will still offer more than most people do on average each week, and cars with smaller batteries offer quicker charge times.

How do I add charge when I get home?

Home charging is a crucial aspect of owning and running an electric car and there are incentives in place for charging at home. Government grants and even manufacturer schemes will make installing a home wall box much cheaper.

As well as cost saving, one positive is refinement – EVs are quiet and, therefore, relaxing to drive compared with a petrol or diesel car. Another positive is performance, with even lower-powered EVs offering rapid acceleration.

But isn’t the UK lacking in charge points?

The number of charging stations in the UK has grown enormously. According to ZapMap, there are over 35,000 connectors across the country, made up of around 20,000 charge points in about 13,000 locations. At present 26 per cent are in central London alone, with 13.5 per cent in the south east and 12.3 per cent in Scotland. Government funding will make fast chargers more widespread and improve the country’s charging structure to make charging easier.

Doesn’t the energy for electric cars only come from fossil fuels anyway? Will it actually be cheaper to buy and run an electric car?

Pun-tastic … Why the British Love Corny One-liners At the 2019 Edinburgh Festival the prize for ‘Dave’s Funniest Joke of The Fringe’ was awarded to a Swedish comedian known as Olaf Falafel, who triumphed with his quip: “I keep randomly shouting out ‘Broccoli’ and ‘Cauliflower’ – I think I might have florets.” Back in 2017, Chinese comedian Ken Cheng won the award for his gag: “I’m not a fan of the new pound coin, but then again, I hate all change.” Turn back the clock even further to 2015 and the funniest joke award went to Darren Walsh for the simple but ingenious: “I just deleted all the German names off my phone. It’s Hans-free.” Whether you love or loathe them, the jokes that have the biggest impact on British audiences are puns.

What is a pun?

A pun is a play on two or more words that sound the same (or almost the same) but have different meanings. In Britain we have a long and distinguished history of punning, with the first recorded use of the term dating back to 1643, but the practice of pun-making is even older than that. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle considered puns to be a kind of literary deception because they are open to different meanings. Although this kind of comic wordplay is undoubtedly popular, puns are often considered to be a low form of humour. We talk about ‘terrible’ puns and ‘bad jokes’, as if puns are a cheap laugh, easily understood by an audience. The reality couldn’t be further from the truth, as brain studies reveal it requires a degree of mental gymnastics to appreciate a pun.

Getting to the punchline

Humans organise their knowledge into memory structures known as schemas, so when we see, think or hear of something, the schema

containing the relevant stored information is activated. When we hear Darren Walsh’s joke about deleting German names from his phone, our immediate response is to create a mental picture of a mobile phone with the help of our phone-related schema. But Darren is also talking about German names, so we call on another schema to remember how these names sound. It may take us a moment to process the difference between ‘Hans-free’ (a phone with no records of people with the name Hans) and ‘hands-free’ (a way of using a phone without having to hold it), but when we do, the surprising and unexpected juxtaposition between these two schemas makes us laugh.

Popular punsters

Some of our best known comedians have built their careers on delivering carefully crafted puns. Described as ‘The King of the One-liner’, Tim Vine’s jokes are legendary. Milton Jones is another high profile comedian who bases much of his comic material on puns. Speaking to The Scotsman newspaper in 2017, he claimed his successful style grew out of the “British tradition of nonsense.” So next time you hear a pun, don’t groan: consider the comic genius it took to think it up and appreciate the steps your brain goes through to enjoy it. Property Matters Bringing an Idea to Life...

‘as existing’ survey drawing. In close dialogue with the homeowner to establish exactly what they wanted and needed from the new space (which may be different!) we went on to designing the extension.

If you’re considering alterations to your home or an extension, it may be helpful to understand how the process works and exactly what role your architect plays in bringing your idea to fruition.

Following agreement on the plans, we submitted a planning application during which time we liaised with the planning officer to slightly amend the design so an approval was gained. After securing planning approval we moved on to the working drawings – the more technical ones – in order to secure building regulations approval.

This is a recently completed Pilkington Architecture project that involved the construction of an extension on the front of a detached house, over an existing study. The brief from the homeowner was to increase an existing small, single bedroom to a double with an ensuite bathroom. So, where did we start Before and After Before and After when the homeowner approached us? Well, firstly we did a bit of pre-application work with the planners to ascertain that an extension on the front elevation would be acceptable. There’s no point in wasting time and money pursuing something that is never likely to be approved. Once we’d established that the idea was a possibility, we measured up the house, providing an

Three prices were obtained and one of the contractors was chosen by the homeowner for the work. On this occasion our involvement wasn’t required much on site, although we were there to answer the occasional query from the contractor or client. Gardening Love Your Lawn Your lawn will probably be growing rapidly now, and with temperatures mostly having evened up and the soil hopefully becoming less soggy, it is the perfect time for some spring maintenance. Grass needs regular mowing from now on; in some areas this may mean once a week, so make sure that the mower blades are good and sharp. On so-called utility lawns you will need to cut to about 2.5cm or 1”, while on higher grade smart lawns cut to about 1-1.5cm. Lawns benefit from a specially formulated spring feed at this time of year to encourage good strong growth. If you use a granular formulation, make sure that you water it in well if you cannot time the job so that the rain does this for you!

you choose, make sure that you leave the specified time between applying the treatment and raking the dead moss out. If you don’t, the moss problem could get worse, as you’ll spread living moss as you rake. Worm casts may be there in abundance now too, so if necessary simply use a besom or brush to brush them away or distribute them over the lawn. Humps and bumps in the lawn or indeed any other sort of uneven surface can be dealt with now, but get this done promptly in case the weather gets hot and dry soon. A minor problem can be dealt with using a sandy top-dressing mixture, but if there are some prominent problems then use a sharp spade to cut an ‘H’ shape over the bump or hollow. Now carefully peel back the turf and then remove or add soil as necessary before replacing the turf flaps, firming well and providing a good drink. It is also worth sorting out any stepping stones that have sunk too low or become uneven. Use a spade to ease them out of the lawn and lift and readjust the level beneath before replacing them.

Scarify the lawn with a spring-tined rake to pull out any accumulated debris or thatch from the base of the grasses. This allows for a better flow of moisture and air, thus ensuring that the grass grows stronger and more healthily. If your lawn has developed a lot of moss then apply a proprietary moss killer before scarifying. Use a combined feed and moss killer to save yourself time if you like but, whichever product

Short Story Apples for Alpacas “Leave some for the rest of us,” Joyce called shrilly at the woman outside the rectory gate. Joyce had walked past the basket of windfall apples every day that week. A long-departed parson had planted an orchard in the garden, and last autumn had seen a bumper crop. What a lovely gesture, she thought, offering the apples for free. How kind of Reverend Tiller. She’d picked over them when they first appeared. They’d clearly been stored in a shed over winter and looked a little worse for wear. She took the best of the bunch just to display in a bowl. She was not fond of eating apples, they were too much work.

The words slipped out before she had chance to stop them. The woman sighed. “Really?” She gave Joyce a rueful glare before handing her the bucket. “In that case, they’re all yours.”

The young woman paused when she heard Joyce, “They’re not for me,” she laughed. Joyce saw that she’d nearly filled a whole bucket. “They’re for the alpacas.”

Joyce took the bucket, confident in her victory. When she glanced at its contents, she realised most of the apples were only fit for the compost heap. Never mind, she would dispose of them when she got home.

“I beg your pardon?” Joyce had never heard anything like it. These apples were for people, not animals. “But they’ve not been put out for that purpose.”

Reverend Tiller waved as he crunched down the drive towards them. “Hello ladies!” he said heartily. “Nice to see you helping yourselves to the apples.”

“I’m sorry, are they your apples?” The woman blushed. “The sign said “Free apples – help yourself.”

“Yes.” The woman grinned. “This lady has volunteered to make crumble for the whole street.” Joyce could have kicked her.

“No they’re not mine; I’m at number 42.” Joyce felt she could speak for the vicar. “But they’re not for animal consumption.” “Don’t worry, it won’t do them any harm,” the woman assured her. “Alpacas love apples.” “That’s not the point.” Joyce felt quite exasperated. “They’re for humans, and humans only. Isn’t it obvious?” “Not to me,” the woman protested. “It’s just common sense,” Joyce said. Honestly, she thought, some people have no idea. “When a sign says help yourself, it means only for people, not animals.” “But that’s just your interpretation.” The woman continued filling the bucket. “And besides, these apples have been here for days, so clearly I’m not taking them away from anyone who wants them.” “Well, I might want them,” Joyce said. She didn’t, but she couldn’t bear to see them wasted on alpacas. These were good apples after all, straight from the rectory orchard, far too good for animal feed. “I’ve decided to make an apple crumble for every house on the street.”

“What a lovely gesture.” Reverend Tiller smiled. “You’ll have your work cut out for you; these apples are quite bruised.” “But they’re far too good for animal feed aren’t they?” Joyce looked slyly at the other woman. “Animals?” He shook his head. “What animals?” “She wanted to feed them to alpacas!” Joyce said. She liked to think that the vicar and her saw eye to eye on most things. “Good job I arrived when I did.” “Alpacas?” the vicar cried. “That will never do.” “That’s just what I said.” Joyce nodded emphatically. “I’ve got some far nicer apples for the alpacas.” He turned and trotted back up the drive. “Come with me, Madam, we’ll fetch the barrow.” “I’m at number 54,” the woman called back to Joyce, “so you’ll know where to bring my crumble.” By Jackie Brewster

The Diary of a Local Mum Making History Well, it’s been quite a trying time for kids and parents alike since I last wrote … yet more homeschooling – yay! I mean, are we homeschooling, office schooling, working from home, parenting at work... does anyone even know any more? I’m hoping by the time you read this that the infection rates will have reduced sufficiently for schools to once again open safely and education will have been returned to the capable hands of the professionals (rather than the confused, distracted parents who are trying desperately to remember what a modal verb is whilst simultaneously replying to a work email, fixing the blummin’ printer – again – and making the 47th snack of the day for their seemingly hollowed-legged offspring). It was during one of these homeschooling sessions, whilst helping my youngest with some history, when it dawned on me that one day many years from now school children would be studying this exact moment (possibly not the precise moment comprising the two of us, head in hands, trying to interpret an historical text, but more the ‘general situation’). Hopefully in a classroom and not on a laptop at the dining room table but you never know. They may be floating round in ‘learning pods’ by then (or, more than likely, a good few of them will still be in the ‘terrapin’ classrooms that have been temporary since I started school in the ‘80s!). Anyway, I digress (see, this is the level of distractedness my poor kids have had to contend with for the last half-term!)…where was I?!? Ah, yes, it occurred to me that we’re living through history. That sounds obvious – all time becomes history when it has passed, but this era is pretty darn significant. Unprecedented, as they keep saying. What we’re experiencing now will be talked about, analysed, recounted and studied for many, many years to come. And that’s just COVID-19. Add Brexit into the mix as well and this has been quite a momentous period to be alive. It’s ironic really, considering it’s probably also been

the most boring and uneventful for many of us on a personal, day-to-day level. I mean, talk about Groundhog Day... it feels like we’ve been stuck on repeat for months! But, momentous it is. And that’s something worth remembering. What we’re trying to stoically deal with, and – more specifically – what our kids are pretty admirably coping with, all things considered, is a truly unique situation. When I mentioned this to my kids they initially looked a bit taken aback and then, a smile crept across their faces. The idea that, while they’re battling against boredom, going stir crazy and trying their hardest to learn from a screen, what they’re enduring is so significant that they’re ‘creating’ history for future children to study in years to come, made it feel that little bit easier. It may be pretty torturous to go through…but imagine having to study it! Those future students will be revising key terms before their exams such as ‘BBC Bitesize’, ‘Google Classroom’, ‘Zoom lessons’ and ‘keyworker school’. They’ll learn that, even at school, sports couldn’t be played, lunches were eaten in classrooms and everyone had to wear a mask in corridors. They’ll study the ‘great toilet roll shortage of 2020’ and analyse what lessons could be learnt from that (there are a lot of lessons to be taken from that, which many people could do with learning sooner rather than later…!) and a famous man called Captain Sir Tom Moore. They’ll learn about lockdowns around the world, daily walks, clapping for keyworkers, PE with Joe, the vaccination programme and, although for us it’s still in the future, they’ll then learn about how people were able to come back together, how families reunited, children once again learned to play and socialise together – not via screens – and, hopefully, how a better world emerged after the pandemic. Stay strong everyone. Let’s hope the next bit of history we make is positive.

Belper School Pupils at Belper School were tasked with writing a letter to ‘Everyday Heroes’ or ‘Lockdown Legends’ – people who have done amazing things during the pandemic and deserve special recognition and thanks. The following letters, both written by Year 9 pupils, have been selected for publication as they beautifully express the nation’s collective gratitude towards two wonderful people who have made a huge difference to many people’s lives during lockdown – Joe Wicks MBE and the late Captain Sir Tom Moore (addressed to his family). Dear Family of Captain Sir Tom Moore, I am writing a letter of dearest thanks for all of the contributions and efforts Captain Sir Tom Moore has attained during this pandemic. The work he has achieved is astounding and it is important his effort does not go unnoticed. He has truly been a lockdown legend. Captain Tom started his fundraising campaign with a target of £1000. As he began walking the laps it was clear what was going to happen. The fundraiser skyrocketed, with donations coming in from everywhere. He continued to walk his 100 laps with millions of pounds and thousands of donors kindly contributing to a great cause. Not only was Tom sprightful, happy, and determined to finish his laps, but he chose possibly the best charity: The NHS. With thousands contracting COVID-19, there simply was no better time to help out. And not only did he help the NHS, he lifted the country’s spirit, with the lockdown gruelling even the best of us. Tom’s effort will forever be remembered by everyone as the biggest, happiest, most uplifting event of the lockdown. I will be eternally grateful. Captain Tom’s service in the war was by no means easy. After being stationed in an outpost in Cornwall in May 1940 – just eight months after the beginning of World War II – Moore was later selected for officer training, and attended an OCTU (Officer

Cadet Training Unit). He was then commissioned as a second lieutenant on the 28th of June, 1941. He also proceeded to serve in Bombay, Calcutta, Burma and India (Bombay is now known as Mumbai, Calcutta is now Kolkata, and Burma is now known as Myanmar). While not serving too much on the front line, the fact that Captain Tom not only made it through the Second World War, but then went on to raise £33 MILLION and live to the age of 100 is an incredibly impressive feat. Alongside raising so much money for the NHS and fighting in WWII, Captain Tom received several accolades, which were well and truly deserved. Captain Tom went above and beyond for his country and these achievements, accolades and awards are just a glimpse of what Moore deserves. He received a 1939-1945 star, a Burma star, a Defence medal, a War medal 1939-1945, and a Knight bachelor. He also holds 2 Guinness records, and was personally knighted by the Queen. He was also greeted with a flypast by the RAF and the British Army for his 100th birthday. Captain Sir Tom Moore truly was a hero. He will forever be remembered as a true legend, a brave fighter, and a valiant supporter of the NHS. His efforts will not be forgotten. Tomorrow will be a good day! Over the past 11 months we have been in and out of lockdowns, locked in our houses, which can be a difficult and confusing time for us all, including the younger generations. It’s easy to fall into unhealthy habits, and your generosity and warm heart encouraged us all to get up and get moving. You really are a lockdown legend! I, along with my family, have participated in your workout videos, and they have now become a staple part of our daily routine. Your enthusiasm to help the younger generation to participate in physical activities is beyond inspirational. During these difficult times, children of all ages are missing out on their mandatory PE lessons, which you took on the challenge to provide them with. ‘PE with Joe’ is truly a worldwide sensation. Along with improving children’s physical fitness, you’ve improved children’s mental health; therefore, children have succeeded academically, and have entered the day with a positive attitude and mindset. Keeping yourself busy during lockdown is essential, and you’ve given the public, of all ages, a purpose to move and get fit.

Over the space of a year your following has grown massively, a herd of support following you, praising you for your efforts. 2.72 million subscribers! Did you ever think you would get here? Parenting: Helping Your Child to Get Their 5 a Day Fruit + vegetables + kids isn’t always a match made in heaven. These tips might help to make meal times a bit less stressful. Give them a choice

If you can, involve your child in shopping, and let them pick out some fruits and vegetables that they want to try. You could also help them to grow some of their own, even if it’s just strawberries on a windowsill. When it comes to meal times, try offering your child a choice of a few different vegetables sometimes, so they feel that they have some control. And when you have time, involve them in preparing dinner and then praise them for how tasty the food is.

Try raw

Kids often prefer the taste or texture of raw vegetables over cooked. My children, for example, will happily munch on raw carrots and peppers, but loathe cooked ones. Some vegetables shouldn’t be eaten raw (like potatoes) but most can be, even ones you wouldn’t usually think of eating cold, like broccoli. When you are cooking vegetables, it’s worth trying different methods. My daughter hates steamed kale, but loves crispy kale (chopped up, tossed in olive oil and roasted in the oven for 5-10 minutes).

Blend it up

Children often complain about ‘bits’, whether it’s the seeds in granary bread or pieces of mushroom in a pasta sauce. Blending soups and sauces until they’re smooth can work wonders.

Let them help themselves

Keep your fruit bowl within reach of children over three, so that they can help themselves when they want a snack. You could also keep a snack box of chopped up carrots, peppers, cucumbers etc. on a low shelf of the fridge.

Boost with multivitamins

Multivitamins don’t replace the need for a healthy diet, but they can provide a handy boost. Look for ones that include Vitamin D, as our bodies struggle to absorb enough of it during the months when we spend less time outdoors.

Don’t let dinner become a battle field

Studies have shown that putting pressure on kids to eat can actually lead to worse eating habits a couple of years down the line. Try to make sure you’re sitting down to eat as a family at least a few times a week and don’t let the tension build up until you’re all just focusing on how much (or how little) your child is eating. Ultimately, you want your child to have a healthy long-term relationship with food. That’s going to be so much harder if they end up getting anxious about dinner time. And remember that we all have food we hate, even as adults. So if they really despise something, move on. By Kate Duggan

Local History

Princess Diana Opens Belper Red Cross Centre Fifty years ago I received permission from Derbyshire Red Cross to establish a voluntary aid detachment in Belper, so I set about finding somewhere to run courses to train interested volunteers in first aid and nursing. My first thought was to try Babington Hospital in Belper. An interview with the Matron and Hospital Secretary led to permission to use the disused Training Room at the hospital. So began many years of building up a thriving detachment and several groups of youth members, all giving service in various ways to the people of Belper. In a structural reorganisation in 1974, National Headquarters asked the branches to set up centres in each town which would draw together the Red Cross services in their area, overseen by a centre organiser. Belper Centre was quickly established and run from the Centre Organiser’s home. By 1989 it was apparent that an office with regular opening hours was desirable to handle the amount of work coming in. Again the Hospital Secretary of the time was approached, and he offered the former chapel which was only used for storage. This proved acceptable to all parties, and the Red Cross took it over in 1991 after the refurbishment of the room. As the Centre was the only one in the country to be set up in a hospital, thoughts turned to having an official opening to mark the event. The Branch President approached National Headquarters, and we were delighted to hear that HRH Princess Diana had agreed to come in her capacity as Patron of Red Cross Youth. The date was fixed for April 28th, 1992. Then the planning began. The presentation line and the youth members’ activities in first aid, home nursing and child care would take place in the walled garden outside the centre room. Inside would be displays of casualty simulation and hand care, and a small group of children would say a short poem about the Red Cross. Then the Princess would sign her photograph and unveil the plaque there. The plan and timetable were drawn up and approved. Letters went out to the schools asking permission for the children’s absence, and invitations to guests were sent. We received permission to make a

video film of the occasion, and Lester & Nix kindly hired the latest video cameras and provided two staff to record the day. The inscription was designed and approved for the plaque which was then engraved on Welsh slate by a monumental mason. The day dawned; fortunately dry and sunny. The police made sure all was safe and secure at the hospital, even looking into drains and attics! Then the participants were let in, if they arrived at the stated time and with their invitation cards. Preparations went well and all was ready in good time when the Princess arrived to visit the hospital wards first and then the Red Cross Centre. All agreed that she was very interested in everything on display, and she spent a lot of time talking with the youth groups and other members, and was a delightful person to meet. All too soon it was time for her to leave, but not before she had chatted to people in the crowd out on Derby Road. The rest of us went to The Orangery for speeches, cutting of the celebration cakes and tea. The Centre thrived and developed over the following years. However, nothing lasts. The British Red Cross reorganised itself again, deciding centres were no longer needed, and at the end of 2009, Belper closed down.

Upbeat We are now almost two months into Operation Derbyshire – an initiative to share with our communities the excellent work that is going on to tackle certain crime types in the county and support victims. At the end of last year, Derbyshire welcomed a new Chief Constable, Rachel Swann, and she and Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa have worked together to set these crime types as their priorities.

Chief Constable Swann said: “Focusing on delivering a high-quality service to the public is at the core of everything we do at Derbyshire Constabulary. “We do this by fighting crime, proactively bringing offenders to justice and protecting the most vulnerable from harm.” Mr Dhindsa said: “We really want our communities to know that we focus on long-term problem solving, engaging, listening and responding. We then need to ensure that we let the public know what we’ve done – this is a really important part.”

The operation will highlight what we are doing to reduce speeding, tackle wildlife, heritage and rural crime, and target community crimes like anti-social behaviour.

Nelly, Digby and Esther: revising our pig prejudice The famous wartime leader Winston Churchill said, “Dogs look up to you, cats look down on you. Give me a pig! He looks you in the eye and treats you as an equal.” It seems he may have been right. Recent research published on the UCLA e-scholarship website has revealed that pigs share traits with many other animals that we consider to be intelligent, such as chimpanzees, dolphins and elephants. Skilled swine

Rejecting negative perceptions of pigs as lazy, dirty and greedy, the researchers found that they are intuitive and good at learning from each other in groups. They also revealed that pigs can recognise symbols, calculate basic numbers and rapidly recall important memories. Around 9,000 years ago farmers began to domesticate pigs by capturing wild boars and breeding them to eliminate their more aggressive characteristics. Wild pigs and boars are also highly intelligent animals: so much so that the Visayan Warty Pig, a breed of wild pig from the Philippines, has been observed using pieces of tree bark gripped in its jaws as a tool to scoop out soil in preparation for nest-making.

Clever Nelly

Pigs are considered to be the fourth most intelligent animal in the world and their brainpower is believed to be even greater than that of dogs. Recently ‘Nelly the Clever Pig’ won fame in America as a performing pig, executing complex tricks on stage in return for food rewards. When a Professor of Animal Behaviour went to visit Nelly as part of a TV documentary, the doctor was keen to assess how much her behaviour was influenced by her human owner. One of the doctor’s experiments was to place a bell and a glass on the floor and ask Nelly to

decide which of the two items, when moved, would earn a reward. The film shows Nelly initially shoving the bell with her snout. When that doesn’t produce a reward, she pushes the glass. After receiving a treat, clever Nelly returns to the glass again and again, earning multiple rewards and demonstrating the astonishing speed at which she can learn without human intervention.

Pigs as pets

Having a pig as a pet in the UK is considerably more complicated than looking after a dog or a cat: you are required to register as a pig keeper and you’ll also need a licence to walk your pig along public streets. A decade or so ago ‘Micropigs’ were the go-to pet for pig lovers, but far from living up to their name, most of these animals went on to grow to normal size. A good example is online swine star Esther the Wonder Pig, whose Canadian owners were told she would grow no bigger than 32kg (she now weighs 295kg, or 46 stone). Pet owners like Derek and Steve from Ontario, who look after Esther the Wonder Pig, are very clear about why they have chosen their unusual housemate: “All pigs are loving, intelligent and compassionate animals and they deserve better than the brutal life they are born into.” That’s a statement we’ll all need to consider carefully now science is teaching us more about these fascinating animals. The recipient of this issue’s bouquet is Pat Marjoram, one of All Things Local’s long-time contributors: “This Friendship Blooms bouquet has been presented to Pat Marjoram, author of our ‘Local History’ articles, who has written her 50th and final piece for this issue. Her fascinating articles have been entertaining and informing our readers for over 8 years and we are incredibly grateful for all the time, effort and research that Pat has put in to writing for us.
