Hello readers I’ve had a very interesting couple of months since I last wrote; the highlight of which was the recent wedding of our friends’ handsome son Liam to his beautiful fiancée Kerry. I’ve been to many weddings over the years but theirs was like no other that’s gone before! Following their nuptials at St Clement’s Church in Horsley we made our way to Morley Hayes to celebrate their union. Never have I ever been to a wedding where my fellow guests included two alpacas! Yes, alpacas! Alpacas in bow ties nonetheless! Penny and Pickle mingled comfortably with the other (human) guests in the lovely Pavilion Garden at Morley Hayes. Have you ever heard the sound of a happy alpaca? It’s adorable! If you’re intrigued, then there are local farms where you can actually book an ‘Alpaca Walking Experience’ or an ‘Alpaca Afternoon Tea’ – a perfect gift with a difference for all animal lovers. Without a doubt, Liam and Kerry were the stars of the show that day … but Penny and Pickle came in a close second! Morley Hayes was a wonderful venue with a superb team of staff and I must congratulate them on being awarded ‘East Midlands Wedding Venue of the Year 2019’ at the recent ‘I Do Wedding Awards’. Money Matters: Ups, Downs and Noise

2018 was a tough year for the markets and investments. No major asset class achieved a return of more than 5%. This was the first time this had happened for decades. Usually as certain asset classes falter other asset classes thrive. 2018 started well enough but then Mr Trump decided to engage in an argument with China over Trade Tariffs amongst other things. Trump was elected controversially but claiming he would make America “Great again”. As a businessman himself he went about this by essentially reducing corporation tax for businesses and claiming lost revenues by adding tariffs on imports to the United States. He picked a fight with the world’s second biggest economy, China. Additionally, Europe was targeted too. China retaliated by adding tariffs of their own, impacting the American export markets. This spooked the markets and the final quarter wiped out the early gains of 2018 and more besides. Trump is seriously lagging in the opinion polls and no US President has ever been re-elected for a second Term of Office from such a low opinion rating before. So he will have to do something unprecedented to retain his position. Maybe more negotiations will have to happen for him to regain some US support. Additionally, the booming economy of the States also needed slowing down to avoid overheating and a method of doing this was reducing interest rates – which the Federal Reserve did on several occasions in 2018. Again, the markets didn’t like this as it sent messages to the markets saying, effectively, business would not continue to be so good as it had been. Then, in January 2019, there was an agreement for China and America to return to the table for negotiations over the proposed tariffs and the markets began a period of significant recovery as the global equity markets (including UK) posted growth of over 15% to 1st May. (*) The Federal Reserve also sent messages saying maybe they increased the interest rate too much and murmurs suggested the potential for reductions adding to a rebound in the markets.

Despite the early gains of 2019, equities have seen inflows fall and the favoured asset classes were fixed interest, as talk of less interest rate rises and potential quantitative easing from Central Banks made fixed interest look potentially more attractive. Speaking to clients invested here in the UK and listening to the UK media and press, Brexit was declared to blame when in fact it had little to do with it at all. It is impossible to avoid the noise regarding Brexit with every media outlet dramatising events regarding the negotiations with Brussels. The country lost its Prime Minister as she failed to bring together enough support to conclude agreements, as time and again her proposals were deemed not acceptable. As I write this, Brexit negotiations for a change are not the main headline, but finding her successor. However, significant data and other helpful market indicators reflect the UK is actually doing better than many other European countries including Germany, France and Italy. Many companies report successful trading reflecting in their profits and accounts. Yet the UK seems to be full of doom and gloom and uncertainty. Political risk and the psychology of investors leave the UK unappealing to investors, especially those overseas, despite company data showing differently. The worries over uncertainty about the future – including who will be Prime Minister, the value of Sterling and the global disruption caused between the US and China – make markets jittery in the short term and there is significant volatility with prices rising and falling daily. Traditional economic cycles are knocked off-kilter. We do know that, despite the noise and despite the ups and downs, the world will continue to turn and markets will rise and fall.

Life List Finders Sleepers I think Hamlet spoke for insomniacs everywhere when he said: ‘To sleep, perchance to dream.’ But if Shakespeare doesn’t send you to the land of nod and you’re desperate for forty winks, it’s time to get creative. How about counting sheepdogs? After all, there’s no need to follow the herd. Some swear by a milky drink with whisky, and some leave out the milk altogether. Listening to the news on the radio might work, but there’s a high probability of nightmares. Think yourself asleep by visualising all the DIY jobs you haven’t finished (or started!). Recite the alphabet by animals. If you can lap zebra to reach zebra shark, and then go right through again to zebu, you deserve a decent sleep (and your own column in National Geographic). If you’re stuck for something to think about, but your brain won’t

shut down, you could try thinking up new insomnia cures. Maybe you need to change the Feng Shui by moving a snoring partner on to the landing, or changing your mattress – only not last thing at night. Have you opened the window a little? Not recommended if you live near a motorway, a landfill site or an opera house. Chamomile tea is one option – particularly if the alternative to sleep is having a second cup – but it may cause chamomile wee! Acupuncture is said to work wonders, only don’t experiment at home by leaving a needle under the duvet – especially if you own a waterbed. Sweet dreams! By Derek Thompson

Just a Thought... Everyday Heroes Award ceremonies: the glitz, the glamour, the adoration, the free champagne – marvellous! From the world of acting, to sport and philanthropy we, quite rightly, celebrate those who have achieved the miraculous in fine and publicised style. What about you though? You, the lady in her 50s with a full-time job and mum in the early stages of dementia. You, the single dad holding it all together for the kids when all you want to do is cry or sleep. You, the pensioner who still runs marathons despite that hip problem. You, the child who stands up to bullies and faces anxiety head-on day in, day out. You, the twenty-something who relies on the food bank despite working your hardest. You, the person with the mental health difficulties or hidden disability, whose practised smile plasters over the pain so as not to cause discomfort to anyone else. Where are your award ceremonies?

I don’t think there are any. Let’s change that. Let’s remind ourselves that you are the everyday heroes, unsung but not unnoticed or unappreciated. Look in that mirror and acknowledge the mountains you scale, the performances you give and the barriers you smash through every single day. Let’s do that for ourselves and for each other. For you, yes you reader, are an everyday hero and there is no golden globe that could ever do justice to your achievements.

Travel São Miguel: Top Hot Spot in the Azores Out in the Atlantic Ocean, this is the largest island in the Azores, a colourful place all blooming year round but set precariously at the meeting point of three tectonic plates: Eurasian, African and North American. Bristling with dormant craters and cones, laced in waterfalls, hot springs and lakes, it’s truly awesome but these volcanic wonders hold every visitor spellbound. North-west of Ponta Delgada, the capital, a road winds up into the hills fringed in wild gladioli, hydrangea and agapanthus. The coastal scenery is delightful but turning inland you soon reach the ‘Royal Belvedere’, where in 1901 Dom Carlos looked down on the twin lakes of Sete Cidades. Framed by verdant slopes, connected by a narrow strait, they spread across the crater of a dormant volcano, their lovely colours reflecting the ever-changing light, one lake as blue as the sky, the other turquoise and green. Meadows shimmer along the shore and, beyond the slender bridge, the pretty town greets you with cottage gardens, bandstand and church. According to legend, the lakes were created by rivers of tears when a shepherd and his beloved princess parted on the hilltop. At the heart of the island, at 575 metres, Fire Lake claims the purest water. In clear weather, vantage points along the road reveal some stunning views, but in its pristine nature reserve the lake can only be reached down a steep trail. The hike along the shore is challenging at times but gorgeous, with luminous water, sandy coves, scrubland and forest, cliffs and the crater rim rising towards the sky. Meanwhile, on the northern slope, the hot springs of Caldeira Velha nestle amongst giant ferns and towering trees, nature in the raw

almost like a Jurassic Park draped in red rocks and steaming water. An iron-rich waterfall tumbles down into the upper pool, pleasantly warm, but the lower pool reaches a tingling 36oC. It’s the perfect way to relax after exploring the nearby trails. In the luxuriant hills in the south-east, Furnas has its own geothermal gems. Down by the village, a stream meanders orangey-red through mud springs and bubbling pools where you hear the ‘Devil’s Heartbeat’ while mini-geysers pop all around. Then head for the landscaped gardens of Terra Nostra with its walking trails and bathing pools of different temperatures, most amazing the circular lagoon near the entrance, so large it rarely feels crowded. The orange water is likely to colour your skin but before you shower, take time to enjoy its health-giving minerals. A short drive away, the crater lake boasts a romantic beach with glistening water and a few pedal boats but you soon smell the fumaroles puffing relentlessly at the foot of the hill. The locals love them: want to cook your Sunday lunch or a festival feast? No problem; just set your pot in the ground, cover it up, and a few hours later the tasty ‘cozido’ stew is ready to share with family and friends. By Solange Hando

I thought it was only for...er, no I don’t think she’ll mind.” Ken clapped his hands together. “Excellent! Now old boy, if you wouldn’t mind setting the table?” The muffled slam of a car door heralded My Dearly Beloved’s arrival and also the smoothing of marital relations on an industrial scale. Enter Sarah with Hannah (our youngest) in tow. “Tom, can you go and get the rest of the shopping? I’ve…” A deathly pause as Sarah’s gaze alighted on our newest house guest. In a deadpan tone Sarah said, “What’s he doing here?” Struggling to find the correct words I was reduced to simply stating the obvious. “Making goulash?” Fortunately, the moment was saved by Hannah who squealed with delight and ran up to give him a big hug. “Uncle Ken! Oh I’ve missed you! How long are you staying for? A week?” Hanging from Ken’s neck, Hannah spun round, waiting for confirmation. Sarah pointed first to me, then to the hallway. “Can we have a word?” Once out of the kitchen, Sarah and I began a heated discussion conducted in rather strident, hissing tones. “What have I told you about inviting that man into our house?” “He’s my oldest friend.” “He’s a scrounger.” “He’s not a scrounger…he’s a freeloader.” “What’s the difference? And why is he wearing your slippers?”

“I was hungry. Right, let’s get these dishes done.” Aghast, Ken jumped to his feet. “Absolutely not. I will see to this. Hannah, I hereby appoint you deputy pot washer. Now, all hands to the pump!” More giggles from Hannah as, much to her amusement, Ken flounced around the kitchen, flicking his tea towel across the work surfaces. “I’ll have this place sparkling in no time, Hannah dear.” Cue more fuming from Sarah. The next morning, I was awoken by an urgent prod in the small of my back. “Tom! Tom!” (More hissing.) “How dare you invite him without consulting me.” “I didn’t invite him, he bumped into me and Nigel in the Old Paraffin Lamp and sort of invited himself. Hey, can you smell bacon?” Leaping from the bed, Sarah bounded down the stairs to admonish the would-be chef. I decided that this confrontation was one I would be advised to sit out. Shamefully, I disappeared under the folds of Egyptian cotton to await Krakatoa. But Krakatoa did not erupt – in fact I must have nodded off, because on looking at the bedside clock I saw that an hour had elapsed since the initial assault on my olfactory senses. Gingerly, I padded downstairs to be greeted not by shouting, but laughter. Sarah, her serviette to her mouth, was stifling a giggle as Ken cleared the remnants of a breakfast feast (whilst wearing Sarah’s pinny). “Oh yes, Tom was completely caked in mud, he looked a complete idiot.” Fuming, I grabbed the last of the toast. “So Ken, where are you off to today?” Mournfully, Ken played with the hem of Sarah’s apron. “To the council, I imagine, to see if they will find me a place to stay. Failing that, I imagine the Salvation Army might consider me.”

I followed Sarah’s gaze through the open kitchen door. “Hey, they’re my slippers!”

“Nonsense Kenneth, we can’t have you out on the streets. Tom will move the sofa bed into the study, won’t you Tom? Tom? Where are you going?”

Over dinner, Hannah giggled incessantly as Ken regaled her with outrageous stories garnered over thirty years of living on his wits. Sarah, forgetting that she was furious, ploughed through her goulash.

“Out to buy myself some slippers, that’s where!” And so Dear Reader, let that be a warning: charity (it would appear) should never begin at home… To be continued….

I am usually in Parliament from Monday to Thursday however Parliament is in recess over the summer months and therefore it is an opportunity for me to spend time at home in the constituency visiting local businesses and other organisations. Earlier in the year, I visited Belper School Sixth Form to talk to female pupils about issues facing women today. Students wanted to hear whether female politicians are treated differently in Parliament and what barriers may be encountered. The students raised their concerns about climate change and I was pleased to hear that they had formed their own School Climate Change Committee. A further topical women’s issue that was discussed was period poverty and access to sanitary products.

The Government has recognised the issue with period poverty in the UK and it is pleasing to see that we are now providing free sanitary products in primary schools across England from 2020, to ensure that no girl is held back from reaching her full potential. This builds on our commitment to provide free sanitary products in England’s secondary schools and colleges. In May, I was delighted to be invited to the launch of Radio Reminisce at Spencer Grove Care Home in Belper. Radio Reminisce is a free online radio service for the older generation and the concept was created by music publisher James Oldrini who lives in Belper. The radio station aims to reach out to the 850,000 people in the country who are living with dementia, in particular those with early onset dementia.

For those who subscribe to the radio station, there are a range of hour-long programmes called ‘On the Wireless’, which are presented by former BBC and Saga Radio presenter Ashley Franklin, who mixes music and memories for every year from 1945 to 1965. In each show, Ashley plays the songs of a particular year and reminisces about the social and cultural history of that year, for example, TV, radio, cinema, family life, food, fashion, holidays, hobbies and sport. There are also quizzes tailored to seniors, chair yoga and ‘Songs of Praise’ style programmes for those people who are unable to get to church. In addition to being dementiafriendly, Radio Reminisce is also loneliness-aware and is an excellent way to create a community to bring older people together to chat and share memories. I was pleased to support the Derwent Valley Cycle Safe event in May. A large number of cyclists cycled up the A6 from the University of Derby to Matlock to highlight the need for safe cycle paths through our WorldDerwent Valley Cycle Safe Event Heritage Site. Safer cycle paths also help boost tourism, promote healthy living and improve air and life quality in addition to making it safer for families to cycle rather than using the busy roads. Participants were supporting a cycleway from Derby to Chatsworth and connecting it to the High Peak Trail and the Monsal Trail. Get Your Facts First Hand The 13th August is International Left-Handers day: an event to raise awareness of life in a right-handed world as well as celebrate their uniqueness. It was originally established by Dean R. Campbell in 1976 as the founder of Left-handers International. Interestingly, the percentage of those who favour the left hand is estimated to be around 10% of the population. This suggests it is not something that is learnt, but perhaps genetic. According to statistics, the chance of a child being left-handed is greatly increased when both parents are left-handed. Nowadays, adaptations can be made and a range of products are sold to assist those who favour the left hand, but historically life wasn’t so easy. In medieval times to be left-handed was to be associated with the devil and black arts. The word ‘left’ is said to be linked to the word sinister. ‘Sinistra’ is the Latin word for left. The English word left originates from the Old English word ‘lyft’ which meant weak or useless. In Victorian times, school pupils had their left hand tied to a chair if they were seen to be using their left hand and this punishment was believed to train them into using the ‘right’ hand. This was because the right hand was associated with righteousness. This belief was backed up by various biblical references. This practice, or at least similar, has been reported to have continued into more recent history.

Maple Glazed Pork with Mediterranean Vegetable Kebabs These chunky meat kebabs with a sweet sticky glaze are perfect for a barbecue or al fresco supper served with warmed flatbreads and salad. Makes: 8 Ingredients: 750g lean pork fillet, cubed Juice of 1 lemon 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp dried oregano 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 large red peppers, deseeded and cubed 2 courgettes, sliced 2 red onions, peeled and cubed 6 tbsp maple syrup 4 tbsp tomato ketchup 1 tbsp mild mustard Method: Place the cubed pork in a non-metallic container and add the lemon juice, half the oil and the dried oregano and garlic. Toss to coat then cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 3-4 hours or overnight. Thread the pork, pepper, courgettes and red onion onto 8 long metal skewers. Cook on a preheated barbecue or under a hot grill for 10-15 minutes, turning frequently, until the pork is cooked through and the vegetables are lightly charred.

Meanwhile, mix the remaining oil, maple syrup, ketchup and mustard together and brush all over the kebabs for the last 2-3 minutes of cooking time, until glazed and sticky. Serve immediately.

Marinating the meat in lemon juice and oil will make it extra tender. Add some chopped chilli for a spicy touch or add 2 tbsp light soy sauce, if liked.

Word on Wine After a wet start to the summer, I hope the sun is now shining and that you are able to enjoy a few glasses of wine outside. This issue’s wine is made from the Chardonnay grape. This grape is now grown all over the world with each country giving the resulting wine its own unique characteristics via the ‘terroir’ of the area. From its origins in France as a grape that makes classic Chablis and white Burgundy, it has also become an important wine to help bulk up some wines or smooth out rough edges. It is also an important part of the production of Champagne. The wines that the grape produces can vary from thin and steely wine to be enjoyed on its own in the sun, to full bodied wines that scream out for food. In some countries they even use the grape to make sweet wines with the aid of ‘noble rot’. In the late 20th century, there was a revolt against Chardonnay in the UK after some wines, particularly from Australia, were over-oaked – resulting in a sometimes yellow, smoky wine. This caused a backlash against Chardonnay and produced a group of drinkers who would only drink ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) white wines, but loved Chablis. Chardonnay is now making great wines that can be drunk at any time.

The Chardonnay wine I would like to tell you about is a wine made in Napa Valley, California, USA. ‘Bread and Butter’ is not only the name of the wine but also of the company that makes it. Bread and Butter Chardonnay is among the top selling, super premium wines of California. It is a dry, white wine that is full of flavour, well-crafted and available at a reasonable price. The Bread and Butter company, who also make a good Pinot Noir, has now been purchased by a large wine group WX (Wine Exchange) but they have decided to keep the brand alive. This is happening around the world; large companies are buying up the smaller producers to increase their portfolios. The makers describe this wine as ‘delicate with rich notes of vanilla bean and almond, with creamy custard notes of crème brûlée.’ The Californian vineyards are fed with morning mists from the Pacific, fogs rolling down the surrounding hills and sun drenched rocky soils. Beer duty is a tax paid when producing and selling beer and is calculated based on the strength of the alcohol. Beer duty has increased by more than 60% over the last 17 years. With seven in every ten alcoholic drinks served in pubs being a beer, beer duty increases have a large impact on pubs and it’s set to rise every year for the foreseeable future as it is linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI) which all but guarantees annual increases. Business rates are taxes paid on non-residential properties like shops, offices, factories, and pubs. Rates are generally calculated based on a property’s rental value, usually on a square footage basis. However, for pubs it is a calculation based on ‘fair maintainable trade’ as determined by an independent assessor. The way the business rates system works has a disproportionate impact on pubs compared to other types of business (e.g. online businesses). VAT is a tax which is added to most goods in the UK and has a flat rate of 20%. Pubs, along with other licensed venues such as restaurants and bars, have to pay VAT on all food and drink they sell. This is not consistent with other food outlets, as supermarkets, convenience stores and takeaways (including cafés) do not pay VAT on most food products. All this contributes to the UK having one of the highest beer duty rates in Europe. In fact, beer duty in the UK is three times higher than the EU average. Calling All Wannabe Toxophilites! That’s people interested in the great sport of Archery – or ‘pointy stick throwing!’ Have you ever thought of taking archery up as a hobby? Well now couldn’t be a better time. Derbyshire Archery Club, celebrating its 70th birthday this year, has just moved to its new home on Main Road, Lower Hartshay. Part of the club’s development plan is to make the sport available to more people, especially those living in the area. Archery has developed as a sport massively over the years. Today, they shoot different kinds of bows (longbow, recurve and compound) over various distances. In winter the club shoots indoors at The Ecclesbourne School in Duffield, although many members continue to compete outdoors in a “frostbite” competition! They pride themselves on being a very friendly club, and members can choose to attend on club nights (Wednesdays or Fridays) and participate just for fun, or take part in the many competitions that are held regularly.

For those wanting to improve their shooting skills, there is coaching available from Archery GB registered coaches. So why not go along and try your skill at one of their “Have A Go” sessions? These are being run at Kedleston Hall with the next one scheduled for August 25th. For those seriously interested in the sport there are beginner’s courses, arranged by the club at Lower Hartshay, which run over a weekend – dates of forthcoming courses can be found on the website. Juniors aged over 10 years old are also welcome. Once the beginner’s course has been completed, participants receive a certificate and can then join any Archery GB affiliated club (of course, they hope you’ll join as a member of DAC!). Interested? Footnotes: Athlete’s Foot As the temperature rises during the summer months we are more likely to suffer from Athlete’s Foot which is a fungal infection. Fungi love warmth and moisture, the exact conditions inside our shoes or boots particularly in hot weather – although sandal wearers can quite often suffer as well, due to the skin becoming dry and losing its protective oils. The main symptoms of the condition are itchiness and a feeling of intense heat on the feet. A red scaly rash may be visible particularly between the third, fourth and fifth toes on one or both feet. There is often a painful stinging sensation if we try to scratch the affected area and, in severe cases, cracked and peeling skin which is prone to further infections. Good hygiene is very important to treat the condition and also to avoid it spreading. You must change your socks and tights regularly and pat your feet dry rather than rubbing them with the towel after washing. I also recommend using Lamisil, available from your local chemist, to reduce the itchiness and help to kill the fungus responsible. By Peter Waugh

Derbyshire Walking: Mackworth & Meynell Langley Walk Type: Generally easy walking with one long hill Distance: 5Âź miles (8Â˝ km) Time: Allow 3 hours Waymarking: 17 OS Map: Explorer 259 (1:25,000) Derby Start: The Farmhouse at Mackworth car park (by kind permission of the manager, please ask), Ashbourne Road (A52), Mackworth Grid Ref SK 316 375

This walk takes you through the village of Mackworth and up into Meynell Langley skirting the edge of the Kedleston Estate. A country walk offering splendid views of nearby Derby. The Route 1. Turn left out of the hotel and then immediately take the footpath on the left. Go through the kissing gate and head straight on, keeping to the fence on the left, to a gate in the bottom left corner of the field. Go through the gate and cross the road (beware of traffic). Turn left to follow the road as it winds through Mackworth village past Mackworth Castle all the way to the main road. Mackworth Castle was probably the site of a fortified manor house, the seat of the Mackworths. This fell into ruin and Mackworth Castle as it stands is a gatehouse of c.1495 which appears to have been an abandoned effort to rebuild the old manor.

3. Continue through the gap and bear right to pass through a gateway by a large ash tree. Follow the path as it heads down the field towards a wooden footbridge crossing Flagshaw Brook (not the one to take vehicles). 4. Follow the footpath as it continues straight ahead crossing two fields and passing through a wicket gate. Follow the footpath as it climbs up the hill alongside a mature hedge to the top left corner of the field.

2. Turn right at the main road and walk for 600 metres to the garage (beware of traffic). Continue 50 metres beyond the garage and take the footpath on the right. Continue straight ahead, keeping the hedge on the right all the way until you come close to Bowbridge Fields Farm. Continue in the same direction through a gateway and go through the next field, keeping the hedge on the left, to a gap in the hedge.

5. Pass through the wicket gate and continue climbing gradually uphill, keeping the hedge on the left, over several fields until you reach the road. On your left is the entrance to Meynell Langley tearooms.

This area is part of the Kedleston Estate which, during World War II, was an important centre for training new recruits. More importantly, Kedleston Hall itself was a wire station where ATS girls intercepted enemy messages and passed them on to Bletchley Park, home of the Enigma machine. 6. Turn right and walk along the road verge facing the oncoming traffic. After 250 metres follow the bridleway on the right travelling through the gate. Follow the path/ track with the woodland on the left as it travels all the way past Upper Vicarwood Farm. 7. At Upper Vicarwood Farm continue past the farm buildings and then go through the green painted metal farm gate to go out through the front driveway of the farm. Follow the tarmac track as it continues eastwards to provide good views of Derby and the surrounding area. 8. After 750 metres follow the tarmac path on the right to Lower Vicarwood Farm. Just before the farm bear left to skirt the farm buildings and pass through a wicket gate. Keeping the hedge on the left, head to a stile in the bottom left corner of the field. 9. Follow the footpath as it travels straight ahead (southwards) over the next five fields, with the hedge on the left, to a footbridge over the Mackworth Brook. 10. Once over the footbridge, keep the hedge on the left and go over the stile in the hedge in front of you. Continue up the field, with the hedge now on your right for approximately 60 metres. Then turn right, through a wicket gate in the hedge to follow the path up the side of the houses to the road.

Ahead are the tower blocks of Derby University, Kedleston Road Campus with Allestree in the foreground. Further to the right is Derby Cathedral and the city centre. Beyond is the Trent Valley and the granite escarpment of Charnwood.

11. Cross the road and go over the stile opposite to follow the footpath as it climbs up the hill to return to the start of the walk. Honda CR-V Hybrid What is it? Honda’s best-selling CR-V SUV is reliable, practical and well-priced, and the latest model is stylish with a bolder, US-inspired look. An increased wheelbase means a more practical cabin, with a seven-seat version an option on the petrol-powered model.

What’s new?

Honda offers the CR-V with a 1.5-litre petrol engine – and this, the Hybrid. It’s Honda’s first electrified SUV, and aims to offer a good mix of efficiency and performance.

What’s under the bonnet?

A 2.0-litre VTEC petrol engine is paired to an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack, giving a total output of 181bhp and 315Nm of torque. Front or four-wheel-drive is available, with an e-CVT automatic transmission. 0-60mph takes 9.0 seconds and top speed is 112mph, but it never feels as quick as those figures suggest. Around town, it will exceed the claimed 53.3mpg fuel economy, but on motorways and at higher speeds fuel economy drops below 40mpg – disappointing for a model that claims to be so efficient.

What’s it like to drive?

The CR-V Hybrid is comfortable rather than sporty, with supportive seats and a well-composed suspension setup.

Quality is a big improvement, with plenty of soft-touch materials, as well as a clean, clutter-free layout, and wood trim. The absence of a transmission tunnel allows for a spacious centre console, while a traditional gearstick is replaced by buttons. The seven-inch touchscreen is loaded with features but can be difficult to operate. For practicality, the CR-V excels, even as the Hybrid. There’s 491 litres of load space, while the rear seats offer plenty of legroom and headroom for adults.

What’s the spec like?

The entry-level ‘S’ specification is a little disappointing, with satellite navigation and parking sensors missing. However, our high-spec SR grade car came with leather upholstery, keyless start and entry, heated front seats and ambient interior lighting. The Hybrid costs over £2,000 more than the petrol model, a significant chunk of money considering that running costs aren’t exactly revolutionary. Prices start from £30,130 for the Hybrid, with our test car costing £34,470 – putting it in a similar ballpark to Toyota’s RAV4.

Honda has done away with its diesel-powered cars

It’s refined at speed with limited road and wind noise and there’s some roll in corners.

How does it look?

The striking front nose and overuse of chrome give a more American look, resulting in a bold-looking SUV. The new car is wider and more muscular and the angular front end makes it aerodynamically efficient. All models also benefit from front and rear LED lights to give the CR-V plenty of presence.

What’s it like inside?

Verdict

The CR-V Hybrid is the pick of Honda SUV’s line-up, and is ideal for quiet and efficient town driving. Honda should be admired for pushing ahead with electrification and abandoning diesel in its CR-V – especially as the SUV sector is still dominated by diesel-powered models. However, for long-distance efficiency, diesels still make sense, but for urban drivers wanting a stylish and practical SUV, the CR-V Hybrid could be ideal. By James Baggott

Short Story Buried Treasure “Dylan, come and have a paddle with me,” Ralph said to his grandson. Dylan had reached that difficult age. Not so long ago he would have built sandcastles with his grandad until the sun went down but now he sat hunched on the sand in his coat, working his way forlornly through a box of Tic Tacs. He’d even refused an ice cream. Dylan squinted at the kids playing in the waves. “It looks a bit cold,” he said finally. “Well it won’t kill us,” Ralph said. “I’ve not come all this way not to have a paddle.” Dylan didn’t budge. “Come on, lad,” Ralph said as sternly as he dared, “let’s get some sand between your toes.” Dylan sighed, and put his Tic Tacs in his pocket. “Do this one thing for me,” Ralph said finally, “and then we can go home.” Dylan contemplated this deal in silence. Eventually, to Ralph’s relief, he began reluctantly pulling off his trainers. Off they sprinted, weaving between deckchairs and sandcastles. Ralph nearly had his toes in the surf when Dylan caught his arm. “Stop, Grandad! I just heard something strange, listen…” He jumped up and down. “Did you hear that?” he said. “Do it again,” Ralph said, moving closer. Dylan jumped and there was a sharp rattling sound. “It’s coming from under the sand.” Dylan jumped once more. “There’s something down there – I can hear it.” “So can I now,” Ralph said. “What do you reckon it is?” “No idea. I can’t hear anything now but when I ran it made a sound like diamonds in a tin.” “Could be buried treasure?” Ralph grinned. “You never know what the sea is going to wash up.”

I tell you what, Dylan,” Ralph said, reaching for his wallet, “run up to that kiosk and get us both a spade, the best you can get.” “Aw thanks, Grandad,” Dylan said. “We’ll be able to dig a huge hole then.” He threw off his coat and ran back up the beach. Hobbies Why Collectors Love the Vinyl Vibe In recent years there has been a revolution in the way we buy and listen to music. Thanks to new technologies we are now able to play the music we love wherever, and whenever, we want to hear it. With so much emphasis on the streaming of music from services such as Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and Tidal, the use of minidiscs, cassettes and CDs now seems strangely old-fashioned. After all, when you can stream everything you could ever wish to hear direct to your mobile phone, tablet or laptop, who needs a physical format? In spite of all this ingenious and accessible technology, it seems many of us actually prefer to do it the ‘old school’ way. Collecting vinyl records is one of the most surprising trends of the 21st century and fans cite the ‘authenticity’ of analogue sound, the tactile quality of vinyl and the availability of album cover art and liner notes as reasons why they prefer vinyl recordings to digital music files or CDs. Starting your collection Many vinyl enthusiasts start out by taking on someone else’s collection, often in the form of a gift or inheritance from a family member. Chances are that these records will not be rare items, but they will at least provide the basis for a collection. Car boot sales, charity shops, record fairs and specialist vinyl stores are the best places to start digging around for additional records, and you might even come across a rare release as you browse. Once you’ve acquired a few records, you’ll need to decide how to play them. Vintage equipment can be hard to repair if there’s a problem, so most collectors opt for a modern, portable player (£50 £100) or a modern turntable that can be linked to a computer (from £80 - £120).

How will I know if a record is valuable? As with any collectable item, rarity is the main driver for pushing up value. Certain packaging characteristics, such as foil-stamp numbering on the jacket (001/500), different coloured pressings, misprints or famous or controversial images/text can add to the value. Records that have been withdrawn or censored should also be on the collector’s radar, as this indicates that fewer records will have been sold. How do I build up my collection? Online sites recommended by collectors include Classic UK 45s – which specialises in 45 rpm releases from the ’50s and ‘60s; Planet Earth Records (an online record store with thousands of rare vinyl records) and discogs.com – where you can buy records at relatively low cost and exchange information with other vinyl fans. Record Fairs are great places to browse and chat with other enthusiasts. Go to www.recordfairsuk.co.uk to check dates of fairs taking place. Don’t forget contemporary vinyl It’s easy to focus on vintage collections and forget that today’s artists are releasing tracks (or re-releasing past work) on vinyl. Some limited vinyl releases by bands such as Radiohead, the Arctic Monkeys and Keane are also highly collectable, selling for between £50 and £100 each. Vinyl is a gateway to a whole world of music enjoyment, with opportunities to find out more about different artists and genres of music as you add to your collection. The Diary of a Local Mum Everything Changes The one thing that you can guarantee about parenthood is that as soon as you’ve got used to any one aspect…it’ll all change. In many cases, you relish those changes. The sleepless nights, for example. If you’re in that stage you have my sympathies but stay strong … at some point you WILL get a full night’s undisturbed sleep again. Likewise, the nappy changes, then the ‘MUUUUUUM, can you wipe my bottom?’… these things come and go and you can cheerfully chalk them up to experience and move on to the next phase of parenting. Invariably, as you bid farewell to one challenge (usually when you’ve just about got to grips with it) you’re faced with a new one – and you’re back to floundering around without a clue what you’re doing. Parenting’s not so much a learning curve as a learning squiggle. It bends and loops all over the place, with highs and lows and one step forward, two steps back scenarios that leave you constantly bemused but, much like a rollercoaster, often with a sense of bewildered enjoyment. You may not know what the heck you’re doing, you’re constantly going up and down, round and round, and being thrown in different directions … but every time you get to the end of one section you look back fondly, wishing you could do it again. You may have guessed it, but I’m feeling especially emotional as this summer marks a big change for us – my youngest is finishing primary school and moving on to secondary. He’s more than ready and very excited about it. The freedom it will bring, the new experiences, the opportunities. But, as he awaits September with eager anticipation I am a gibbering wreck. While kids are constantly looking forward, as parents we tend to focus on what’s ending – on the time we can’t get back, the things we won’t do anymore, the end of an era. It’s emotionally overwhelming!

Because both of my children went to preschool in the same setting as their primary school, I have been making that daily journey for almost 12 years now. Very soon, I’ll make it for the last time. It’s been a stressful, difficult rush for as long as I can remember and having to structure a work day around 9am drop-offs and 3.30pm pick-ups hasn’t been easy – but it’s become a way of life. You’d think I’d relish the freedom of no longer being tied to the school run but the thought of it is filling me with panic! This is it … the end of a very long but enjoyable and hugely significant chapter in our lives and I feel that I’ve skim read too much of it. I want to go back and re-read it, making sure I thoroughly appreciate every. single. page. I’m not going to be the preachy mum who’s telling you to cherish every moment because, let’s face it, no one does. The cleaning teeth, putting shoes on, getting into the car on time with everything you need routine is not enjoyable, not for a second … but when it ends, the sigh of relief you’re expecting is a much more contemplative, reflective sigh. The less emotional part of me knows I have some heavily rose tinted glasses on here. Going back and starting again would probably kill me. I wouldn’t cherish every page; I’d want to tear a few out. I know from experience that as soon as one door closes another will open and a new routine will sweep in and take over our lives; within weeks we’ll be on a different treadmill that will feel equally as arduous yet strangely enjoyable … but at present I can’t get past the fact that it just won’t be the same. So, as September approaches my thoughts are with all the families who are embarking on a new daily routine. Enjoy the rollercoaster, embrace the changes, but allow yourself some time to look back fondly on your heavily edited version of the chapter that you’re closing. *Sobs into cup of tea*

Belper School Questioning Cooper: Farewell to Our Head Mr Cooper is an absolute muffin-lovin’ legend. After everything he’s done for Belper School, seeing him leave will be a huge shame; he’ll be greatly missed. Mr C’s been at Belper School for 6 years and since day one he’s made an enormous impact on staff and students. Since Year 10 Mr Cooper dreamt of being a head; now it’s time for him to move on. “I might get emotional” was Mr Cooper’s response to being asked what he’ll miss most. Mr C said there were many things he’ll miss. Especially when realising that “it’s the last time I’ll do this.” However, it’s the people; staff and students that make Belper School what it is. Many have ‘stepped up to the plate’ and done a ‘hell of a lot’. Mr Cooper’s most proud and memorable moments were hard to choose. They’re when staff and students come together to show everyone that “We’re Belper School and this is what we do!” One event mentioned was the X-Factor; he loves it when “someone’s on stage and you’re unsure if they’re gonna be good or not, then they belt something out!” because it makes him realise the talent at Belper School. Another was how the Christmas Cracker just kept growing! One of his best moments was results day when “we showed other schools that think Belper is ‘abnormal’ how good we are!” His proudest achievement was being able to “raise standards without losing the fundamental core ethos of Belper School.” Despite all these high points, there was one low moment when Belper School lost their chocolate muffins! Despite rumours, Mr Cooper isn’t going to change the uniform at his new school. Mr C is a traditional man who loves a uniform; he’s excited about having one in his favourite colour, green. However, he believes “it means nothing about the standards, it’s the people. There are schools that aren’t as high as Belper in the league table that have uniforms.” Regardless of loving uniforms, Mr Cooper said “No uniform works, and it works well.”

We asked Mr Cooper what he hopes to happen with the new head: “I hope he does really well and that Mr Goforth builds on the foundations of Belper.” Mr Cooper says he will keep an eye on Belper and hopes that they will be the second best school, or he could cope with being joint first! When asked if there was anything he would have done differently, Mr Cooper replied: “I had to permanently exclude lots of people to get my point across; it felt like I’d failed these students.” He regrets feeling this but behaviour improved, which is important. There is much more that Mr Cooper would’ve done for the school but with funding being cut it was impossible. He said he wanted to “build and improve, not take back.” Mr Cooper has had many embarrassing moments. He has been caught singing in corridors whilst classroom doors are open, but the funniest has to be when he was ‘playing about’ and pretending he was in a lift, bobbing his head up and down to a group of students. The next thing he knew a group of prospective parents walked past saying “You must be the Head…” he replied, turning red, “Yes. Welcome to Belper School!” Mr Cooper’s main tip for the new head is: “LISTEN! Listen to the students and the staff. Experience the school. Observe before making any decisions… And be proud of the school despite those who like to ‘have a pop at us’.” Finally, Belper School wanted to know how Mr Cooper shines his head! He replied: “A bit of olive oil never goes amiss… and, if teachers are good, they get to buff it!” We wish you all the best and good luck in your new school Mr Cooper, you will be missed! Belper Nursing Association: Nurse Butler’s Book We recently received from the family of Nurse Rebecca Butler a book containing the signatures of her friends and patients, which had been presented to her in appreciation of her twenty years’ service to the Belper Nursing Association. The family dated her service to the thirties and forties, but knew little else about her save that she is buried with her sisters in Pinxton. If any of our readers know anything about her, the family would be interested to hear it. Nursing Associations were set up to provide district nurses for their area, and were entirely dependent upon voluntary financial contributions. Derbyshire had 120 associations, and Mrs Bourne-Wheeler, living in Holbrook, was the Hon. Secretary of the County Association which oversaw them. Evelyn Duchess of Devonshire was the President. During the First World War, both were also leading figures in Derbyshire Red Cross Branch; the Duchess as President and Mrs Bourne-Wheeler as a member of the Branch Committee. As part of its peace plan, one of the Branch’s aims was to continue assisting in health care, and to provide the nursing associations with equipment and wound dressing materials free of charge from the bulk stocks kept at its headquarters in Bakewell. Requests were made half-yearly through the Society’s Township Leaders, and the material was sent directly to the District Nursing Associations. Nursing appliances such as water beds, air cushions, bed-cradles and rests, crutches, spinal carriages and wheelchairs were also made available on loan, applied for in the same way. In order to stimulate the development of new nursing associations in areas where none existed, free grants were available from Red Cross funds for furniture and equipment such as nursing cupboards, blankets and bed linen. These were readily taken up by the associations to the benefit of nurses and patients alike. During the period of depression, unemployment and financial crisis from the mid-twenties to before the Second World War, the Red Cross could not raise

enough funds to supply materials free to the nurses, but it agreed to continue to supply them for sale to the nursing associations. Free equipment was still offered as an incentive to set up new associations where needed in the community, and nursing appliances such as wheelchairs were still available on free loan. After the Second World War, the restructuring of health care with the NHS Act of 1948 led to the closing down of the nursing associations in December 1949. The funds of each association were transferred to the Red Cross for distribution, and the money was used to set up a fund for directly helping the sick in each association’s area. These funds were closed finally in the 1970s. So this simple ‘autograph’ book is able to bring to mind past times. The Society is pleased to add to its collection a volume containing so many signatures of recognisable local family members and other people of note in the town. It is also a reminder of how community nursing care was delivered before the National Health Service which is so familiar to us all today. The Society’s talks take place at 7.30pm at Strutts on Derby Road on the first Wednesday of the month. “Mapping Old Belper and Milford” takes place on 4 September. On 2 October David Bell takes a new look at “The Plague Village of Eyam”. Sue Woore’s topic on 6 November is “Hays: Some Derbyshire Place Names”. Visitors are charged £3; free to members. Upbeat In this issue, your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team is offering advice on how you can help make your home more secure while you are away: We all need to take a break away from home from time to time and, as well as making sure you are fully packed and prepared for your holiday, we would urge residents to make sure that home security is also on the checklist. The best thing you can do is to make sure that it looks like someone is home. If you can, arrange for a relative, trusted friend or a neighbour to look after your house. Ask them to open and close your curtains and to collect any post while you are away. You can repay the favour by offering to do the same for them. Tips to help your house look lived in: • Avoid discussing travel plans where strangers may overhear about your absence from home, or posting information on to your social media accounts, such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. • Try not to leave valuable items, like your TV, stereo, DVD and computer equipment where thieves can see them.

• If you normally leave valuable bicycles or other items in your shed, consider storing them in the house. • Place important documents and valuable items locked in a safe or leave them with other family members. • Security mark your belongings and keep a list of the make, model and serial number of these items. Take photos of any valuable items that can’t be marked, like jewellery. • Cancel any milk, newspaper or other deliveries. • Use automatic timer-switches to turn your lights on when it goes dark. • Cut the lawn and trim back bushes and plants so they won’t look so overgrown while you’re away. • Make sure you have up-to-date buildings and contents insurance. Finally, before you go, check you’ve locked all external doors and windows, any side or back gates, and that your shed, garage or any other outbuildings are secure. If you have a burglar alarm, make sure it is set. We hope you enjoy your holidays, and don’t forget your tickets and passport!
