WELCOME LETTER Hello readers Welcome to the December/January edition of All Things Local – and firstly, may we wish a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all our readers and advertisers! At the time of writing, we have no idea what Christmas will be like this year, with things changing day by day. Suffice to say, it will probably be a lot different to the kind of Christmases we’re used to but we hope that you are able to enjoy the festive season and celebrate in one way or another. 2020 – Yule Have To Try Harder! Let’s just get it out there that 2020 has been an un-year in many ways! Too much preposterousness to even speak of. Christmas hasn’t even got the top spot on being the most talked about ‘C’ word! You know what though, I am here writing this article and you are here reading it, which tells me one very important fact – we are surviving. Sadly, not all have done so and I want to take a moment to pause and honour any lives lost this year. 2020 has attempted to throw us off course with everything in its arsenal and turning back time 12 months no-one saw any of this coming. Well, I say this year we make merry most magnificently. Let us look then to the Germanic tradition of Yuletide. The yule log, the singing, the dancing, the imbibing, the eating of delicious fayre and the intriguing rituals such as Bell Ringing! Yes – Bells were traditionally rung throughout Yuletide to ward off evil spirits

of darkness, to show them that the warmer and brighter days would follow after the winter solstice. So that is it really – I am off to invest in some bells. I shall chase away the doom and gloom of 2020 with a ring-a-ding. You can use hand bells, sleigh bells, church bells any type you ding-donging well like. So, let’s make some noise to herald the arrival of 2021 because I truly believe it can only be better. You have weathered such personal and national storms dear reader, you are truly incredible. Go forth and make some noise and move forward, as ever, stronger together. We’ll put our positive feet forward into the New Year – with bells on! Merry Christmas – stay safe and well and BRING IT ON 2021!

Travel Discovering Bath If you’re still not sold on travelling abroad this winter, choose to holiday closer to home with a city break in Bath, one of the UK’s national treasures. After the year we’ve had, understandably many of us aren’t keen on travelling outside of the UK this winter – but that doesn’t mean you can’t book a holiday closer to home. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bath is a great option for a UK-based city break, where luxurious spas, historical tales and awe-inspiring architecture are all part of the experience. The largest city in Somerset, Bath is easily accessible by rail or road for anyone living in England and Wales. But, if you did want to fly, Bristol Airport is only 20 miles away. Tempted? Here’s what not to miss while you’re there: Warm up in a thermal spa Bath is best known for housing one of the world’s best-preserved Roman bathhouses, a piece of history so important that it gave the city its name. Naturally heated to around 46°C, the water comes from the city’s hot springs which are packed with over forty different healing minerals. After being discovered by Prince Bladud around 863 BC, these natural spring waters became a constant theme throughout the city’s history. The original Roman baths are no longer safe for swimming, but you can still book a tour around the temple and bathing complex. If you do fancy a dip, the Thermae Bath Spa is right next door and uses the same mineral-rich water, treated to make it safe for public use. There’s no better place to warm up this winter; indulge in a treatment or

two before bathing in the rooftop pool, drinking in the views of the surrounding cityscape. Walk in Jane Austen’s shoes For any Jane Austen fan, Bath will conjure up images of the style and sophistication of the 1800s. Not only did the author live here for five years, but she also used the city as a setting for two of her novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. You can learn more about her time in Bath at the Jane Austen Centre, where guides in period costumes and a Regency tearoom really help bring her stories to life. Take an architectural tour Walking through Bath will take you on a journey through centuries of architectural art. After taking a liking to Bath during the eighteenth century, the Georgians built much of the city you’ll see today. They used the famous Bath limestone to construct elaborate buildings, including Circus, the Assembly Rooms and the Pump Rooms. The Royal Crescent is an absolute must-see: this beautiful, curved row of thirty Georgian terraces is probably Bath’s most impressive piece of architecture. Visit some museums Bath is a treasure chest of museums and galleries; you’d need a week to visit them all! Two of the most famous are The Fashion Museum, home to over 100,000 items of clothing and footwear, and The Museum of Bath Architecture, the best place to learn about the city’s distinctive Georgian structures. Inspire Your Heart with Art January 31st is ‘Inspire Your Heart with Art Day’. You are invited to experience for yourself the benefits of the arts. But what is art anyway? When Tracey Emin displayed her bedroom at the Tate Gallery, there were cries of “that’s not art!” It was then shortlisted for the Turner Prize, showing that art is subjective. Children are naturally drawn to the arts; they create rhymes, songs, paint, draw, dance, build Lego. This is for pure enjoyment, without worrying about the end result. But as we mutate into adults, we may think those skills are the domain of the ‘professionals’, asking ourselves “Who are we to make art?” Over lockdown, many adults discovered how the arts are integral to wellbeing. We may have taken steps to connect more with the arts. For example: picking up a paintbrush, listening to different styles of music, or trying out new skills, such as sewing or drawing. We had opportunities to engage with our hobbies in different ways. Our Morris dancing troupe was unable to celebrate May Day traditionally. Gone were the friends, the maypole and the encouraging audience. Instead we filmed our dance alone. Without a friend to drag me into the right place at the right time, I enlisted my daughter. She willingly complied – accepted the bribery – and helped me learn the dance. Our team’s individual efforts were then edited together using the magic of technology and people with wizardry skills. So although we couldn’t dance round the village as usual, our quirky efforts could still be shared with the community.

I asked for her view on creativity in times of stress: “It allows us to dive into the present moment, creating a sense of relaxation and contentment. It helps us accept what’s within, slow down and forget about the outside world. It’s an act of mindfulness resulting in compassion and kindness to the self. We can fill our cup so we can be there for others.” So, through art we can find connection. Maybe you’ve always wanted to don your dancing shoes and learn the tarantella, or play Greensleeves on the flute. It’s easy to get involved and fill your heart with art. Winter Braised Lamb Shanks Lamb shanks are cut from the end of a leg of lamb and are ideal for slow cooking. Serve with creamy mashed potato for a really warming winter supper. Serves: 2 (see Tip) Ready in: 3 hours Ingredients: 1 tbsp olive oil 15g butter 2 large lamb shanks 2 leeks, trimmed, washed and sliced 600ml vegetable stock 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp tomato puree 2 large carrots, peeled and cut into chunks 3 fresh rosemary sprigs Salt and freshly ground black pepper 300g chestnut mushrooms, halved Freshly chopped parsley, to garnish Steamed green beans, to serve Method: Preheat the oven to 170C, 150C fan, gas mark 3. Heat the oil and butter in a large frying pan. Add the lamb shanks and fry for 3-4 minutes until browned all over, turning frequently. Transfer the lamb to an ovenproof dish. Add the leeks to the frying pan and fry for 5 minutes then pour in the stock and Worcestershire sauce and stir in the tomato puree. Bring to the boil then add the carrots, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.

Spoon the stock and vegetables around the lamb and add the rosemary sprigs. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and cover tightly with a lid or foil and cook for 2 hours. Remove the dish from the oven and stir in the mushrooms. Return to the oven and cook for a further 30-40 minutes, uncovered, until the lamb is very tender and the liquid has reduced slightly. Serve garnished with freshly chopped parsley and accompanied with steamed green beans.

As a general guide each lamb shank will serve one adult, however if you use large lamb shanks this recipe will stretch to serve a family of two adults and two children.

Beer The opportunity to brew a beer at Thornbridge Brewery, or at least see the process, doesn’t come along very often; so, when I was offered the chance, I grabbed it with both hands. Thornbridge Brewery, some 15 years ago, created a hop forward beer called Jaipur. At a time when there was little in the market to match its citrus aroma and flavour profile, some would say it was a bit of a game changer. Still today, where their output is seen to be quite diverse, Jaipur makes up for nearly 90% of their sales and is exported all around the world. During lockdown The Holly Bush at Makeney was one of a handful of pubs that still had demand for their cask beer. They operated a very successful take-out service when everyone else was pouring beer down the drain, which saw them become the saviours of cask for Thornbridge. As a thank you and a Chris, the Landlord from The show of businesses coming Holly Bush, got hands-on with together during the pandemic, brewing his own beer Thornbridge offered the Landlord at The Holly Bush, Chris, the opportunity to come and brew a beer, which will latterly be made available at the pub. If you pay a visit to the brewery tap in Bakewell, you can get yourself booked on a tour of the shiny brewing facilities on the Riverside estate. We were fortunate during our visit to be taken on a guided tour from Head Brewer, Dom, which also included a tour of Thornbridge Hall, where it all began. The brewery at the hall is located in an outbuilding and is quite unassuming from the outside. But open the doors and every millimetre of space is being utilised and is crammed full of mash tuns, fermenters and brew kettles, each connected by an array of hoses, which all looks a bit Heath Robinson. It was here that the Holly Bush beer was scheduled and we had

the opportunity to be involved in the brewing process, adding the hops during the boil and the inevitable cleaning up afterwards. The wort had the yeast pitched and we left it to ferment for around 10 days, after which time it would then be ready to be racked into cask and be in The Holly Bush’s cellar after 3 weeks. A 4.7% pale ale, hopped with Citra and Mosaic hops, promises a quite sessionable, flavoursome ale and seems like a fitting tribute to these two businesses coming together. Our reward for working so hard on making this beer? Well, we were treated to lunch and they generously let us have the pick of the beers they were serving at the brewery tap. This included a Double Dry Hopped version of Jaipur, which was only released the day before and was a fine thirst-quencher. Hats off to Thornbridge Brewery; this level of recognition of what landlords are doing to help their own and the brewery’s success shows a bit of class and a lot of other industries could learn from it.

Word on Wine Well, Christmas is almost upon us. What happened to the year? Even given the Covid-19 problems, for me the year has shot by. It may be time to hope that next year will be better and celebrate with a glass or two of sparkling wine. The most famous sparkling wines are from the Champagne region of France. The soil in this area of France was laid down in the post-Jurassic periods, when the area, millions of years ago, was a shallow sea. This produced a chalky marl with seashells. The sea extended across into the south of England and takes its name from Kimmeridge, a small town near Dorset. The soil is referred to as Kimmeridgian soil. This similarity of soil quality, and now the effects of global warming, has made the south of England an attractive addition to the French wine maker’s portfolio. However, our own winemakers have not missed this point and some of our best sparkling wines have even beaten the Champagne houses in blind tastings. One of these winemakers is Peter Hall, who started the vineyard in Breaky Bottom in 1974. Initially making Loire style white wine, he now makes only sparkling wines which have won awards over a number of years. The vineyard of Breaky Bottom is just east of Brighton in the South Downs National Park of Sussex and is only 2 miles from the English Channel. The six acre vineyard produces just around 10,000 bottles of sparkling wine a year. Given the free draining, chalky Kimmeridgian soil and the secluded valley (known locally as Bottoms) which gives protection from the coastal winds, it creates a microclimate that is ideally suited to growing the grapes needed for a great wine.

Technical Details: Grapes: 60% Chardonnay, 22% Pinot Noir & 18% Pinot Meunier. Appearance: Clean – clear wine with light golden tint and fine, elegant bubbles. Nose / Aroma: Fresh bready nose with hints of baked apples, caramelised apricots and nuts. Taste: Full mouth-watering feel with tastes of ripe stone fruit, roasted brown sugar and citrus notes, with a lingering bitter almond finish. Alcohol by Volume: 12%. Food match: Great with anything but particularly good with friends and family to celebrate. The 2009 Breaky Bottom Brut sparkling wine is made with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes by the Méthode Champenoise, just as in France. A good sparkling wine relies on a good base wine, so care is taken to select the best grapes which are lightly pressed to only remove the clear grape juice inside the red grapes. At this point the juice can have a slight pink tinge. The grape juice is fermented to produce a slightly astringent still wine. The wines are then blended and bottled. Additional sugar and yeast is added to each bottle to produce a second fermentation. The wine is then aged on its ‘lees’, the sediment from the yeast and sugar from the second fermentation. The bottles are then ‘riddled’ by angling the bottles so that the ‘lees’ fall behind the cork. This plug of ‘lees’ is then removed, sometimes by freezing the neck of the bottle, and the normal sparkling wine cork and wire cage fitted. At Breaky Bottom this process takes up to 4 years before Peter is happy and offers the wine for sale. Every year the wine is named after a family friend. The 2009 wine is named after Gerard Hoffnung. He was a constant visitor to Peter’s London home, when he was young. He was an artist, cartoonist, musician, tuba player, broadcaster, raconteur, prison visitor and humourist, who sadly passed away in 1959.

You’re not alone if your motivation to exercise during this pandemic is at zero. One of the best ways to stay motivated is routine, but when our regular routine is taken away it’s really hard to establish new ones, particularly when our offices and homes become the same place.

You could try a monthly challenge such as ‘walk 20 miles in January’; maybe even get a medal or prize for the winner that month as an extra incentive. If you don’t have anyone who would help in this way there are plenty of apps or virtual events around at the minute that you could join.

Pre-pandemic, it may have been second nature to hit the gym, or go for a walk/run before work. Now, with working from home, you have so many things to derail you, especially if you are a parent. While you may find you are drained of some of your desire to workout, this is actually when you need it most. Nothing is more important than your health and mental wellbeing. Exercise is an excellent tool for managing stress and keeping your immune system functioning optimally. The most important thing is continuing to move, even if it’s a 20-minute walk at lunchtime. Set yourself a goal: an achievable one, but something that you need to do regularly to achieve, such as a 5km walk/run, or a 30-minute online class. Using Your 5 Senses When Anxiety Strikes Right now many of us are being challenged by an array of negative emotions washing over us without rhyme or reason. Turn on your TV, read a newspaper, walk past someone on the street or listen to the radio; you cannot, it seems, escape the news that is Covid-19. Anxiety, distress and depression are unfortunately fast becoming a normal state of being for many of us. So how do you manage these states and distract yourself from what you’re experiencing and refocus on what’s happening in the present moment? Acknowledge your situation The first thing is to recognise and acknowledge your situation; let’s use anxiety as an example. As someone who may experience anxiety you may become annoyed when anxiety strikes. “I don’t have time to have an anxiety attack right now”, “of COURSE this has to happen now”, “I’m meant to be meeting someone today but I’m not sure I want to risk it” or “I am so sick of these anxious moments, I wish they would just go away”, “When is all this going to end!” When anxiety pays us a visit, it brings with it a sense of doom. Our hearts race, our minds get busy concocting all different awful scenarios, our breathing becomes shallow and we can sometimes feel light-headed. Suffering anxiety is not fun. Whatever the trigger may be, we suddenly find ourselves cocooned in a storm of feelings that nobody else can see. Whether you’re at work at your desk, or frozen at the kitchen sink, or standing at a set of lights – your stillness contradicts everything that is going on within your mind at that moment. Take a deep breath and acknowledge where you are in that moment. Then use this grounding technique to

help create space from distressing feelings you are experiencing. Let Your 5 Senses Ground You This technique involves using your five senses and is often referred to as the ‘5-4-3-2-1 coping technique’. This technique is designed specifically to be easy to implement and effective in drawing your attention to this moment. It helps to calm your breath, settle your thoughts and brings your mindfulness to the present. Working backwards from 5, use your senses to list things you notice around. To get started, take in a big breath from your belly: 5. See – Look around you and find five things you can see. 4. Feel – Notice four things that you can feel e.g. your feet in your shoes, the itch in your arm, the clothes against your skin. 3. Hear – Take note of three things you can hear. Traffic outside, the wind in the trees or your neighbours’ dog. 2. Smell – Breathe in and list two things you can smell. 1. Taste – List one thing you can taste. You may want to say these out loud as you go, or just confirm them silently, to yourself. Make an effort to notice the little things you might not always pay attention to, such as the colour of the flecks in the carpet, the hum of your computer or the colour of the leaves on the trees.

Footnotes: Why Are My Toenails so Thick? Thick toenails are often assumed to be caused by the growth of fungus under the toenails and in the toenail itself. In many cases, this assumption is correct. However, there are other things that will make a toenail look thick and distorted: Injury to the root of the nail can cause temporary thickening, while severe or repeated injury can cause a nail to become permanently thickened. Skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema may also affect a nail if the skin around it is affected. If the problem is being caused by a fungus, there is usually some yellowish or brownish discoloration of the nails. Topical treatments for fungal toenail infections are often not very effective because they don’t soak into thick toenails very well. The challenge is to get the nail as thin as possible and then apply a preparation that has the ability to penetrate down through the layers and contact the fungus. In severe cases I will use a special kind of rotary burr to reduce the nail thickness as much as possible to give the anti-fungal preparation every chance of getting to the root of the problem. Wellness Matters Why Does Someone Choose to Have Aesthetic Treatments? Aesthetic treatments (Wrinkle relaxation, fillers, plastic surgery, dental work etc.) elicit surprisingly fervent responses. Social media perpetuate this polarisation further by showcasing the horrors that occur to various people. The majority of time the focus is on the outcomes and not on the practitioner. I have yet to see a program about the real-life upbeat stories on how these treatments profoundly impact on various men and women. There are many more happy outcomes compared to the misery shown in the media. I should know as I work with these patients every day. It is incredibly humbling when a patient bursts out in tears and says “There she is”. They go from “Don’t look at me”, to “Look at me now”! When I changed my career trajectory from being an advanced nurse practitioner to advanced aesthetic practitioner my career choice certainly caused a furore amongst my staunch non-believer colleagues and friends. The general consensus was that my skills and talents are lost to the NHS and I am responsible for further perpetuating the insecurities, narcissism and body dysmorphia that is so ‘rife’ in society. Here lays the crux. Why categorise any person who is having treatments? Why are my patients so terribly concerned that people would notice or should ask them if they had work done? Why is that so shameful for some? So, I decided to investigate and interviewed 500 clients to get their view on this. Hopefully this piece might just shine the light in a more positive way and leave the judgements at the door.

My first question to every client is “Why are you here?” At this time, I am not interested in what treatments you think you might need. I am interested in you, what’s happened in your life and what made you think: “I need help.” Here is what I have learned: everyone is on a different journey in their lives. The majority of my clients are 45 – 65 so in the middle of their lives. They have lived in their skins for a good 4 – 5 decades and it is starting to show. They have born children, triumphed injuries, disease and made life choices such as sunbathing, dieting, nutrition and various other things that impact on their canvas. Life has happened to them (us) and rightly so! They are now at a stage when they see the signs and re-evaluate their lives. The majority’s children have left home, many have divorced or recovered from a sick bed. No matter their reasons, the result is that everybody has a right to live a happy, fulfilled life. We also live much longer, thanks to technology and better health care. The words used by many of my clients are that they are ‘fading’. Now this is the one that really grips me. Fading?? It means you are losing brightness, colour and start to disappear. Every person interviewed did not want to look younger. They want to look their best for that age. They feel a disconnect with their inner person who is often much younger compared to their outer person (their actual age). They still want to be themselves but a better, healthier version, making the best of what they have now. So, ladies and gentlemen I say: Go on! Live your life happy in your skin. Derbyshire Walking: Lathkill and Bradford Dales

Distance – 6 miles / 9.8 km Ascent – 650 feet / 197 metres Time – 3 hours 40 minutes Grade – easy/moderate Author – Lou Johnson Suggested Maps – Ordnance Survey Explorer OL24, Anquet OS Explorer OL24 Start - OS grid reference SK192644, Postcode DE45 1LW (approx. location only) This varied Peak District walk includes the lower section of Lathkill Dale, provides a chance to visit the village of Youlgreave and includes a section of Bradford Dale. Walking is generally easy and the route is mostly well signed. Opportunities for refreshment are limited and a visit to Youlgreave is necessary to quench your thirst. The Route 1. Roadside parking is available on Back Lane at grid ref. SK192644 or the small car park a short distance away at SK194644. Having parked, walk east along Back Lane towards Conksbury. Take the first signed footpath on the left (grid ref. SK197647) and follow this across the field to Meadow Place Grange.

The path descends the side of the Dale, turning sharp left before you reach the bridge over the River Lathkill. 3. Cross the bridge below Over Haddon (grid ref. SK202661) and turn right down the Dale with the River Lathkill on your right. Conksbury Bridge (grid ref SK211656) is the next landmark. Here you cross the bridge using the road and walk a short way along the lane before taking the first footpath on your left. 4. First Drive: Volkswagen e-Up! Volkswagen has improved its electric e-Up! Jack Evans finds out how: What is it? In the race to gain EV supremacy, it seems that many manufacturers have forgotten that often the best application of electric technology is in smaller city cars – such as Volkswagen’s new e-Up! EV, which has been given bigger batteries to improve that all-important range. What’s new? The exterior of the e-Up! doesn’t look particularly different from the car it replaces, with the bulk of the changes being under the skin. As well as boosting the battery count to improve range, VW has added the ability to fast-charge the car. What’s under the bonnet? The e-Up! has an electric motor linked to a 32.3kWh battery. Power reaches the front wheels through a single-speed gearbox, and in total it pushes out 80.5bhp and a healthy 210Nm of torque. The e-Up! takes 11.6 seconds from 0-60mph with a maximum speed of 81mph, with a claimed 159 miles between charges. Combined charging system technology gives an 80 per cent charge in just an hour from zero, via a 40kW DC charger. A standard domestic wall box takes four hours, while using a three-pin plug needs around 16 hours for a full charge. What’s it like to drive? The e-Up! is fun to drive, with the zippy acceleration you only get from an EV. The steering and the ride are good too.

The compact proportions lend the e-Up! to town driving and it’s a doddle to park. It’s conservatively styled for an electric vehicle but this should appeal to many. What’s it like inside? The cabin of the e-Up! is business as usual. The forward part of the interior feels uncluttered, the steering wheel has plenty of adjustment, the seats are comfortable and forward visibility is good. Our five-door model granted easy access to the rear of the car and had adequate rear legroom, though headroom is limited for very tall passengers. What’s the spec like? Our test car came in at a reasonable £20,555 after the government’s plug-in car grant. Cruise control, parking sensors at both front and rear and a rear-view camera are standard, while a five-inch colour touchscreen system houses Bluetooth connectivity and DAB radio. Volkswagen includes a 16amp charging cable for use at wall boxes and charge points, and a 10amp cable for mains charging. Verdict The plucky e-Up! has hit the nail on the head, and with around 150 miles per charge offers a genuinely usable range. The ability to fast charge means much shorter wait times if you do need to plug in.

Lost in Austen: Why Jane’s Superfans Are Still Going Strong Around the middle of the 19th century, one of Winchester Cathedral’s vergers asked why so many people were asking to see the grave of Jane Austen. “Was there”, he enquired, “anything particular about the lady?” These days Jane Austen is such a household name it’s hard to imagine anyone having to ask what was special about her. However, when Jane died in Winchester on 18th July 1817, she was far from being famous. It wasn’t until 1870 – when her nephew wrote a “Memoir of Jane Austen” – that the wider public was introduced to her work.

Meet the superfans Sometimes referred to as ‘Janeites’, Austen superfans love to embrace the whole sweep of Regency culture and history. Clare-Violet Hanley enjoys linking up with other fans to immerse herself completely in Austen’s world. “We talk to each other and write letters in Regency-style language [and] bake traditional Regency food for our picnics by the river,” she told the Daily Echo. “Though sometimes I do cheat and just stick something from M&S on a Regency plate and hide the bag”.

Everything Austen The genteel world of bonnets, barouches and blushing heroines that Austen conjured up so effectively in her novels continues to attract new fans all the time, and now a niche industry has grown up to support those who want to take part in Austen-themed events.

Finance Director Roland Anderson, now in his mid-forties, has been an Austen fan for over twenty years. “After I started posting on the Austen message board pemberley.com, I met other fans”, he told the Guardian newspaper. “We visited Bath and other locations, and spent the afternoons drinking tea and talking about Austen.”

One of the key dates in the Austen calendar is the Jane Austen Festival, which takes place in Bath every September. Here you can take part in more than 70 activities over ten days, including writing workshops, city tours, dramatised readings and Regency dance lessons.

One of Jane Austen’s youngest superfans is Sophie Andrews, who started her blog ‘Laughing with Lizzie’ – inspired by Elizabeth Bennet’s line “I dearly love a laugh” in Pride and Prejudice – when she was just 16. Sophie, who has suffered from ill-health, is frank about the way Jane Austen’s novels have helped her: “The books have been my lifeline; when things are tough in the real world, I can just dive into hers. It sounds melodramatic but, in a way, she’s saved me.”

Talks have included topics such as “Rummaging through the reticule” and “Underwear in Georgian England”, and the Regency Costumed Masked Ball, held at Bath’s historic Pump Rooms, offers “a marvellous opportunity to wear your very best Regency gown or breeches, complete with glittering accessories and a mask in the Venetian style.” The Grand Regency Costumed Charity Parade provides a further opportunity for over 500 costumed participants to parade their finery.

Property Matters Glazed Timber Extensions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; A Versatile Addition to Your Home Jon Pilkington suggests how you can transform your property with a timber glazed extension. Timber glazed extensions such as a garden room or orangery are a chic addition to any home whether traditionally styled or contemporary. When designed sympathetically to the property and built using modern manufacturing techniques, a timber-glazed extension will outlast, outperform and be far more attractive than any â&#x20AC;&#x153;off the shelfâ&#x20AC;? UPVC conservatory. These extensions can be integrated into the existing room structure and will give a natural flow out into the garden to enjoy all year round. As well as being properly insulated and ventilated, these types of extension can also be as physically secure as any other part of the home. How do these differ from conservatories? While all these styles of extension are typically connected to a property, the differences in design and style can be considerable. The roof design is perhaps the most noticeable difference with a conservatory usually featuring a fully

glazed roof providing the maximum amount of light to the room below. In contrast, both a garden room and orangery will feature a semi-glazed roof. Typically a garden room will feature a tiled roof to blend with the existing lines and style of the property to which it is attached. This design can create amazing vaulted ceilings which can also feature roof glazing to the gables, increasing the amount of natural light to the room. An orangery roof will usually be flat, finished with lead or a modern alternative such as single ply polymeric roof membrane, and can feature a striking roof lantern providing natural light to the room below. All extension types typically feature brickwork to different extents, with conservatories often using low level walls to support the main structure. There is usually more variation with garden rooms and orangeries as these can be predominately made from brickwork, or a combination of brick and timber framing. Whichever timber glazed extension you choose, whether garden room or orangery, if well designed, manufactured and installed it has the potential to completely transform the way the property is used. Gardening How Many Kinds of Sweet Flowers Grow… The quintessentially English country garden has classic, timeless appeal and although easier to achieve in the countryside can still be recreated at least in part in town. Shrubs make a great backdrop so choose a range of different shapes, textures and shades of leaf colour for that cottage garden feel. For best effect choose mainly or all deciduous shrubs with just a few evergreens. A wooden or metal gate painted white gives the right feel and, when smart, traditional-look fixings and fixtures are painted contrasting black, the look is complete. In a country-style garden the combination of a wide range of types of flower in an even wider range of colours is perfect. Contrasting colours look great as long as there is plenty of greenery in-between. Plant loosely and almost randomly in drifts, with no straight lines anywhere, to give beds and borders a country style, whatever their size. Allow plants to grow closer together so there is no bare earth, and when planting a bed from scratch use hardy annuals to fill in any gaps while the main plants grow, to create a wall-to-wall carpet of colour. Plants in pots add seasonal splashes of colour, so include temporary plants such as brightly coloured pelargoniums and geraniums or longer-term plants such as bulbs and small shrubs. Choose a pot with an informal, rounded

shape, rather than anything too geometric or modern; a terracotta pot works a treat. Have a range of heights in the flower borders, basically with smaller plants in front and the largest at the back, but add in tall, slim plants throughout to add colour, interest and height variation without blocking your view of their smaller neighbours. The classic choice for this is the purple-flowered Verbena bonariensis. A wall made from brick or stone makes a perfect boundary. A drystone wall with variations in the grey and brownish colours of the stone looks great in all weathers, and you can grow plants such as house leeks in some of the crevices. If your garden needs steps, choose stone. It is long-lasting, withstands hard frosts and needs no preservative treatments. Combined with a wall of the same material, steps like this almost look natural, particularly when laid slightly unevenly. Ivy is perfect for covering up unattractive features such as an ugly wall. It grows rapidly and is a useful wildlife habitat, but don’t allow it to grow out of control. Maximise planting opportunities with containers made from natural materials such as terracotta. Positioned on top of a wall they’ll mark the boundary well and bring seasonal colour. Swap the plants around at summer’s end and use winter-flowering pansies for colour throughout the year. Plant small, compact plants along the edges of paths and steps to add colour and interest. Small saxifrages look great but won’t swamp the steps either! Short Story The Secret Ingredient Maureen and Colin watched helplessly as the Thermos flask slid from the table. It hit the kitchen floor with a dull crack. “Christmas is ruined,” Colin said glumly. “Christmas isn’t ruined.” Maureen reached for her glass to calm her nerves. “Not when there’s sherry.” “Perhaps it’s saveable.” Colin gingerly picked up the Thermos flask and shook it. It sounded like wet gravel. “Natalie brought it,” he said. Their guests, Colin’s dad, Maureen’s brother Derrick and his fiancée Natalie were patiently waiting in the dining room for their Christmas dinner. It was a family tradition for everyone to bring something for the meal. Colin’s dad had made the Christmas pudding, Derrick had brought crackers. “What did she bring?” Maureen asked quietly. “I’ve no idea,” Colin said, “she just handed me this when she came in.”

Colin and Maureen looked at each other in panic. “So sorry Natalie, we’ve had a little accident,” Maureen confessed. “Colin’s dropped your Thermos flask.” “It was only cheap,” Natalie laughed nervously. “Just so long as the contents are alright.” Colin shook the Thermos. Natalie looked crestfallen. “I could lend you a pair of slippers,” he offered. Maureen nudged him in the ribs. “But my advice would be not to put your shoes in a Thermos in the first place.”

It was the first time Natalie had joined them for Christmas day, and the pressure to impress was on because she’d once been a guest on a cookery show on the local radio and never missed an opportunity to mention it.

Natalie looked puzzled. “Not shoes; it’s jus,” she frowned, “to pour on the meal.”

“What did she say when she gave it to you?” Maureen asked impatiently.

“I suppose some people call it that.” Natalie sounded offended. “We professional chefs call it jus.”

Colin thought for a moment. “She said it was shoes,” he said finally.

“Why didn’t you say?” Maureen laughed, refilling her glass. “Colin, get the jar of granules out of the pantry and I’ll whisk up some more.”

“It’s clearly not shoes though is it?” Exasperated, Maureen took another swig of her sherry. “What are we going to do now?” she said.

“Do you mean gravy?” Maureen asked, astonished. “I knew there was something missing!”

“But it was a special jus,” Natalie protested.

“What did you ask her to bring?” Colin said.

“What are the key ingredients?” Colin asked as the kettle boiled.

“I can’t remember, can I?” Maureen said. “Let’s look at what we’ve got and see what’s missing.”

Natalie blushed. “I used gravy granules,” she said quietly, “with a slug of sherry in it.”

They looked at the steaming dishes of food on the counter – turkey, stuffing, sprouts and roast potatoes.

“Didn’t I tell you Colin?” Maureen picked up the bottle.

“Can I help with anything?” Natalie poked her head around the kitchen door. “I thought I heard a crash.”

Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre (Also known as ‘Skeggy Home’!)

For over 125 years, Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre in Skegness has provided wonderful five-day holidays for disadvantaged Derbyshire children to enjoy. For many of them it would be the first time they ever saw the sea; an experience that stays with a child throughout their life. Founded originally by Harry Sykes and H. H. Arnold Bemrose in 1891, the present building was opened in 1898, built on land purchased from Alfred Lumley, 10th Earl of Scarborough. It has operated ever since except for three brief periods: during 1914-1917 when it was used to accommodate evacuated pensioners from Boston (Lincs), and between 1946-1947 when Trustees undertook needed repairs and maintenance. The centre ran successfully through the swinging 60’s and the turmoil of the 70’s and 80’s when an appeal was made to provide a new art and craft room, sports hall and gymnasium. This completed project was officially opened by H.R.H. The Duchess of Gloucester in 1993. Unfortunately, the County Council axed its funding and, in September, 1995 the centre sadly closed.

Become One in a Million and Help Derbyshire’s Children in Need

In 1998, following the creation of a fundraising team and a successful submission to the National Lottery and other organisations, a managing secretary was appointed and the centre was reopened. A referral system was set up for schools, social services departments, doctors etc. to recommend disadvantaged Derbyshire children for holidays, with a Home Visitors Team established to ascertain children’s individual requirements. This is the model used today. In 2015, Her Majesty the Queen granted to the charity The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (the charitable equivalent to the M.B.E.) In 2016 the centre’s 125th anniversary was celebrated with numerous events, including a visit from H.R.H. Princess Anne who unveiled a plaque. Today the Trustees, volunteers, and professional staff based at the centre offer holidays for 450 children between the ages of 7 and 13. The annual cost of the centre and the holidays is mainly dependent on public donations. Thanks go to local councils, cycling groups, motor bikers, Rotary groups, The Masons, private companies, pubs, supermarkets, fun days, quizzes, horse races, auctions, raffles … and the many other fundraising groups and methods!

The Centre relies on public donation and, like many charities, has suffered hugely over the last eight months. In order to continue providing disadvantaged children from across Derbyshire a five-day holiday at the seaside, at its specialist co-educational centre in Skegness, the charity needs help from the public.

“Often these children have never had a holiday and would not experience what so many of us take for granted. You can’t put a price on the smiles we see on their faces, but £4 a month can really help do just that – put a smile on the face of a child.

There are one million residents in Derbyshire, and by becoming One in a Million we are asking you to donate £4 a month to help the Centre and the children and schools for whom it provides such a valuable service.

“It feeds a child for a day, or pays for a trip bowling or to the circus – for many of the children it’s a whole new world of experience, and the benefit to them can be huge. But we need your help so we can keep helping them.”

Alan Grimadell, who took over as Chairman of DCHC in August, said: “There are children in all of our communities who need our help on a daily and weekly basis by providing them with a break, a chance to see the sea, spend time in a new environment and make new friends.

Fliss Goldsmith Author One of our fabulous local contributors, Fliss Goldsmith, who writes her wonderful ‘Just a Thought’ column for All Things Local, has recently had a children’s book published. We caught up with Fliss to find out all about ‘Erin & Roderick Discover Families’… So, Fliss, we know you’re a fantastic writer, but what inspired you to start writing children’s books? That is very kind of you! I have an incredible daughter and son and as my parenting journey has progressed, I began to notice certain trials and tribulations that children face. I also noticed that stories are an incredible way to engage children and help them to feel secure in discussing things. When I became very ill in 2018 I re-evaluated life (that sounds really huge – and it is!). I decided that I had to write a story that would support children in their understanding of the world, be accessible to both children and their adults – and of course provide an entertaining read! Can you tell us what ‘Erin & Roderick Discover Families’ is about and the message behind it? This book is all about ‘Families’ and the fact that there is really no such thing as ‘normal’, no prescribed look or make-up of a family unit – and that is brilliant! Our diversity is something noticeable and children will inherently question our differences. That should be celebrated and met with a discussion of positivity and an explanation of what unites us also. Within the story we have a family with adopted children, we have a family with two mums, we have a family with a disabled mother, there is a Dad with tattoos, a mum with piercings and many different skin colours and looks. Real representation is key and I feel that a lot of the time our characters and illustrations haven’t caught up with the 21st Century. The book seeks to promote diversity, equality and inclusion through love, tolerance and understanding. The ethos that underpins all of my writing is ‘Whatever the question, let love guide the answer.’

I am a little overwhelmed and hugely humbled by the positive feedback so far. It is a truly wondrous feeling to know your writing could make a tangible difference to the lives of children and their adults. We understand that there may be more ‘Erin & Roderick Discover’ books in the pipeline…what are your future plans for the series? This is indeed true! My publisher (Purple Diamond Press) has commissioned a 3 book series. I can reveal (exclusively to ATL!) that book 2 will focus on ‘Abilities’. I am hoping to alter the perspective vantage point on ‘Disabilities’ with a refocus to ‘Different Abilities’ and I will be working with several organisations to ensure that this is done sensitively and with an absolute commitment to real representation. The subject of my third book is still in discussions – there are so many subjects I want to tackle – so watch this space! And, of course, the all-important question: How can we get hold of a copy?!? The Diary of a Local Mum Fear of the Unknown I think we’re all feeling this at the minute. This time last year, we had no idea what was around the corner. We weren’t scared of a virus that could rip through our society and decimate life as we knew it … because the idea of such a thing was so preposterous very few of us would have even imagined it could happen. But, here we are; it’s still happening. The fear of what’s around the corner, what happens next, how this ends, how we might be affected globally, nationally and personally is very real. The unknown is scary. For kids, fear of the unknown can be huge; it’s something they may have to tackle regularly. Global pandemics aside, the smallest ‘unknown’ can be crippling for some children. A new experience can be exciting – but for many it can also be terrifying. Often kids like to understand every minute detail and picture a scene before they arrive somewhere. Parents taking children to events or new places are quizzed on everything from ‘What will we eat?’ to ‘How many people will be there?’ to ‘Will it be noisy?’ and, of course, you’re expected to know all the answers. Familiarity is comforting to all of us, so something strange, new, different can feel overwhelming. But, what do you do if you haven’t got the answers? It’s like living in limbo at the moment. The things that usually happen may not. Our safe and familiar places have changed. We can’t do all the things we want to do, see people we want to see and go to places we enjoy – and we don’t know when it will end. We’re all feeling it and, as difficult as it is for adults to understand and rationalise, it’s a million times harder for kids. When they’re looking at you with big eyes asking genuine questions and wanting reassurance, what do you say?

listen to them, discuss their fears and be honest with your answers – even if that means admitting you don’t know. Sometimes, their worries may be easy to resolve; even in the midst of something as huge as a global pandemic they can fixate on things that seem small, irrelevant or irrational to an adult but are vitally important in their world. You may be worrying about the future, your job, the economy or your family’s health but the likelihood is that their worries are very different. They could be lying awake all night panicking that Santa might get COVID-19 (well he must be vulnerable as he’s really old!), whether their Christmas party can go ahead, or whether they caught something from the man who coughed on the other side of the street yesterday. Encouraging them to communicate and letting them voice their fears will really help – you don’t necessarily need to be able to solve everything; just understand. I’ve come to realise that concentrating on what you can control makes you, and them, feel better. While the big picture may be scary, lower your line of focus to your immediate surroundings. If the news is scaring you – and them – turn it off. Instead of dwelling on what you can’t do, what’s changed, and what may happen in the future, look at what you can do, things that remain the same, or do something proactive that will help to make you feel better. Try to find fun, familiarity and enjoyment in every day without looking too far ahead or thinking of the scary ifs, buts and maybes. Ultimately, amidst everything, kids are pretty resilient and adaptable. Keep talking, keep smiling, give them plenty of love, cuddles and reassurance. Eventually, this too shall pass. Roll on 2021 … let’s hope it’s a MUCH happier New Year.

Local History The Story of a Library The rising interest in antiquities during the nineteenth century saw the formation of many county archaeological societies. The Derbyshire Archaeological and Natural History Society was inaugurated in January 1878, soon publishing a journal of its activities. An exchange of journals with other societies was arranged, so that by 1881 there were 7 societies in exchange, 14 in 1884, and 19 by 1891.

Flooding in 1962 and in 1964 led to the decision to move from Bridge Chapel, storing the books in Derby’s Reference Library, some journals in its basement, the furniture and shelving and some journals at Tissington Hall, and the manuscripts in the new Public Records Office. The move in October 1965 was none too soon, as the river flooded again in December.

A sub-committee was formed in 1969 to examine the state of the library, which on inspection was found to be in a terrible condition and in need of urgent action. A Saturday morning working party was formed to meet

The latest blow of course is the closure of everything due to the pandemic. Let us hope that the disease will soon be vanquished so that the library can be visited again and lives return to normal.

Derbyshire Tackles Romance Fraud Police forces across the UK have been working together on a ‘Protect’ campaign, tackling romance fraud. It is aimed at raising awareness of how to protect yourselves online and encourages anyone who may have fallen victim to come forward and place a report. Romance fraud is a devastating crime, which can have a severe impact on its victims and the families involved. These types of offences occur when an individual believes they’ve met their perfect partner online, but the other party involved is using a fake profile to form a relationship and, over a course of time, gains the trust of the individual - with the criminal’s end goal being to steal money or personal information. During lockdown, with an increased feeling of isolation, there has been a sharp rise in the usage of online dating platforms. Whilst using the internet is a great tool for meeting people to form relationships, there’s also a great risk of being lured into a romance scam as criminals are experts in impersonation.

We have seen a worrying increase in romance fraud cases emerging, with a 26% rise since last year. Losses reported by victims during this time totalled £66,335,239 – which equates to an average loss per victim of just over £10,000. Tammy Barnes, Fraud Protect Officer at Derbyshire Constabulary said: “One of the key trends we are noticing with romance fraud cases in Derbyshire is that those being targeted often have open social media profiles and are unaware just how much of their personal information is available to view. Whilst anyone can fall victim to one of these scams, there are things you can do to protect yourself from this happening to you or someone you love. “Unfortunately, those affected by romance fraud stand to lose a lot more than their heart to another person and it’s crucial that we raise awareness of the devastating impact this can have. PC Tips from your ‘Local’ Computer Tutor Spam and Phishing Emails I had a call from an elderly customer who wasn’t receiving her new emails. Her outgoing emails were fine, checked her Outlook & Windows Mail settings; all ok. Logging into TalkTalk webmail the same was happening; any settings would usually be down to TalkTalk. I phoned TalkTalk who asked us to go to the settings online & click on email forwarding. We found an email address my customer didn’t recognise. My customer had clicked a link in a phishing email, which inserted the forward. Her emails went to the address instead of her inbox. If you’re not sure always check. Building a future for family memories I recently inherited several boxes of family photographs, with images dating from Victorian times - when photography was in its infancy - right up to the first decade of the new millennium. After taking stock of all this precious material, which documented over 100 years of my family’s history, it occurred to me that I had a responsibility to preserve it for future generations. Preserving family photographs When it comes to the future of a family photo collection you are faced with a straightforward choice: either divide the photographs up between a select group of relatives, or digitise the entire archive so everyone can hold a copy. There is great satisfaction in restoring and digitising photographic images: transforming faded, mouldspotted and torn pictures into images that look as fresh as the day they emerged from the darkroom. If you decide to digitise, you will need a computer with enough disk space to store the photographic files you are creating. You’ll also need some kind of photo editing software, preferably free to download. Top of What Digital Camera’s list is the oddly-named Gimp, which works like a basic version of the industry-standard software Photoshop. Gimp allows you to do everything from cropping and resizing to altering exposure and colour balance. It also has the same invaluable ‘clone tool’ as Photoshop, which allows you to heal spoiled parts of a photo by copying an undamaged area over the damaged spot. Converting your slides During the 1960s and 70s a craze for slide photography meant that many amateur snappers temporarily stopped taking conventional photos. To convert 35mm slides to digital files, you will need an additional piece of equipment. Slide scanners can start at around £20 - £30 (for a device that can be used together with a smartphone), while standalone scanners are often upwards of £100.

VHS videos to DVD VHS tapes, Hi8 and Video8 are are susceptible to the same degradation as photographic slides, prints and negatives. As the magnetic particles in the tapes gradually lose their charge, the playback quality deteriorates. Depending on how carefully you store your tapes, you will notice deterioration after 10-25 years. The easiest way to convert videos to DVDs is to connect a video-cassette recorder (VCR) to a PC via an analogue-to-digital video capture device. You’ll need to record the VHS video to your PC’s hard drive and then write the recorded video to DVD, using the DVD writer installed on your PC. Be warned, however, that VCRs are slowly becoming obsolete, so if you have a large number of VHS tapes to convert and don’t already have a VCR, this might be a good time to buy one. A medium-priced video capture device costs between £25 and £50, while a VCR costs from £30 upwards (refurbished models may cost less). If you only have a few tapes to convert, you may prefer to use a professional service. It’s worth checking around for the best deal: Asda Photo charges £27 per tape, while web-based conversion specialists such as digitalconverters.co.uk typically charge around £15 for a single VHS or Hi8 tape. Thanks to my inherited collection, digitising family images has now become an absorbing hobby. It’s rewarding to know that, once converted to a digital format, this important visual record will go on giving pleasure far into the future. By Kate McLelland
