WELCOME LETTER Hello readers Welcome to the December/January issue of All Things Local! Wow, another year has flown by and we’re tentatively getting back to some form of normality after almost two years of ups and downs. Life really has been like a proverbial rollercoaster! Hopefully we’re now over the scariest part of the ride though and as we approach the festive season this year we can look forward to some ‘proper’ celebrations with friends and family, after last year’s restrictions and upheaval. It will be lovely to see the return of some of those traditions that we sadly missed out on last year – having the freedom to see other people, to hug, dance, sing carols, watch pantomimes or see live music will be relished! As we look forward to 2022 will you be making any resolutions? After such a strange couple of years that have certainly taught us a lot about the fragility of life, maybe we should all resolve to prioritise enjoying life, doing the things that matter most to us and seizing opportunities to spend time with those we love? We’ve also been taught some lessons of late about the environment and the urgent need to protect our planet from further damage – so maybe that could be something else to concentrate on in 2022? If we all make small changes towards a greener lifestyle, they can add up to a big positive impact. Island Breaks for Winter Sun With summer well and truly behind us, many of us will already be missing the feeling of sun on our skin and sand between our toes. Sigh. You don’t need to wait until summer to get your fix of sun, sea and sand. Now that the world’s starting to open up again, there are destinations across Europe that are welcoming British tourists with open arms. From the Mediterranean paradise of Greece’s sparkling shores to the sun-drenched Canaries, here are some of the best islands to escape to this winter. The Canary Islands, Spain If you’re searching for guaranteed winter sun close to home, the Canary Islands should be on your radar. Lanzarote, Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria are the archipelago’s most popular islands, but the tiny isles of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro are also full of charm. Although it has a selection of pristine, white and blacksand beaches, Lanzarote is so much more than a beach holiday. The island’s otherworldly landscape is signposted with walking and cycling trails to guide the more adventurous visitor. Alternatively, head to Timanfaya National Park and feel the heat of the island’s most famous volcano. Just a few miles south of here lies Fuertenventura, the archipelago’s second largest island. Like Lanzarote, the island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and has some of the biggest and best beaches in the Canaries. The Balearic Islands, Spain Made up of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, Spain’s Balearic Islands are synonymous with sun, sea and sand. In the winter months you can still expect averages of around 14-16°C and plenty of sunshine. Mallorca is by far the largest of the four, and also the most popular. With its postcard-worthy beaches washed by turquoise sea and strewn with hidden coves, it’s easy to see why! Its capital and historical heart, Palma, is worth a visit; filled with markets, pretty churches and galleries,

it’s also known for its up-and-coming drinking and dining scene. Menorca, Mallorca’s teeny neighbour, is perfect if you’re looking to escape the crowds. Its beaches are some of the loveliest in the Mediterranean and the beautiful green countryside makes it perfect for cool afternoon strolls in the sunshine. The Greek Islands, Greece A cocktail of history, sunbleached beaches and aquamarine shores, Greece’s islands are nothing short of paradise. From the gorgeous whitewashed houses of Santorini to Corfu’s historic remains, there’s a Greek Island for everyone. Summer can be busy in Greece but you can expect a quieter vibe in the winter. Bars and restaurants will still be lively in the more popular islands but you’ll have more personal space to explore safely and at your own pace. With over 200 islands to choose from, you’re spoilt for choice. Santorini is one of the most popular, thanks to its spectacular scenery and glamorous hotels. Zakynthos, or Zante for short, is hot on its heels. This is an island for beach lovers, home to one of the world’s most famous beaches – Smuggler’s Cove. Only accessible by boat, and surrounded by impossibly clear waters, its remoteness draws people in. Then there’s Crete with its tapestry of ancient treasures, vibrant cities, dreamy villages and splendid beaches. Oh, and did we mention the food? Beer Adjuncts in Beer Ingredients which are standard for certain beers, such as wheat in a wheat beer, may be termed adjuncts when used in beers which could be made without them — such as adding wheat to a pale ale for the purpose of creating a lasting head. The sense here is that the ingredient is additional and strictly unnecessary, though it may be beneficial and attractive. Under the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot purity law it would be considered that an adjunct is any beer ingredient other than water, barley, hops, and yeast; this, however, is an antiquated view. This purity law originated in 16th-century Germany and did not initially include yeast due to the fact that it had not been discovered yet. Adjuncts have long held an important role in brewing, and some of today’s most sought-after beers (e.g., Pliny the Elder and Westvleteren 12) include adjuncts. An adjunct is nothing more than a non-malt source of fermentable sugars. Thus, this broad term includes: • Belgian candied syrups, unmalted wheat, barley, rye, oats, maize, and other grains • Honey, maple syrup, golden syrup, and other sugars • Fruit, pumpkins, and other natural ingredients Double IPAs regularly feature simple sugars to lighten body and promote attenuation, and strong Belgian ales of all kinds rely on candied sugars to add flavour and prevent cloying sweetness. And then there are lambics, which traditionally include a healthy dose of unmalted wheat, supplying the complex sugars which equally complex blends of microbes slowly digest over time. So, why all of the negativity? I think it comes down to two things. Firstly, the Reinheitsgebot limits sugar sources to barley malt, so there’s a historical association between malt and quality beer, even if it’s only in our heads. Secondly, industrial-scale breweries have long relied on corn and rice to produce light-bodied pale lagers. In craft beer’s infancy, all-malt wort became associated with handmade ales that offered full-bodied flavour in stark contrast to the most popular beers of the day. And then there were those canned homebrew kits that instructed us to add a kilogram of refined sugar to a can of malt extract. Homebrewers who cut their teeth on these easy-to-brew preparations usually

found themselves, shall we say, underwhelmed at the quality of the end product. You would be hard pushed in today’s craft beer space to find many beers that don’t include an adjunct in an attempt to do something a little different and stand out from the crowd. And then, at the end, the bite and sharpness of lime zest to lift this milk stout to another level. Vault City – Apple Maple Pecan 8.5% The perfect post-windy-walk-over-dry-leaves beer. Initial maple aroma belies the crisp burst of apple beautifully followed by an earthy pecan nuttiness; the perfect toffee apple. Word on Wine With the festive season upon us, I thought I should introduce a festive wine. This one is produced by Cloudy Bay in New Zealand called ‘Pelorus’ Non-Vintage (NV) sparkling wine. Only sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of France can be called Champagne.

Cloudy Bay was one of the first five winemakers to establish a winery in the Marlborough region in 1985. The founder, David Hohnen, thought the region would be a good site for a vineyard and invested in the best pieces of land in the region. Since then, the Marlborough region has become New Zealand’s leading wine region and is recognised as one of the best wine growing locations in the world. The winery takes its name from the local bay, named by Captain James Cook during his voyage to New Zealand in 1770. Just before his visit a storm had washed mud into the bay turning the water cloudy, hence the name. The area is now one of the best known regions in New Zealand and embodies an air of luxury by providing space, time and getting close to nature.

This sparkling wine is made in the same way as Champagne, by what is known as the ‘Traditional Method’ or ‘Champagne Method’. The grapes are picked by hand, and only good grapes are selected. These are lightly pressed to produce a ‘base’ wine of each of the grape varieties. A red grape, Pinot Noir, is included in the mix and once the juice is taken the skins are removed to prevent the skins turning the white juice red. The base wines are then blended to produce the required flavours that the wine maker wants. In the large Champagne and sparkling wine houses, they retain a proportion of the blended base wines each year. This can make up to 45% of the wine going forward for secondary fermentation, to produce the ‘house’ flavour of the wine, ensuring that all vintages of sparkling wine taste the same.

The wine makers at Cloudy Bay use a mixture of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes from various vineyards in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough to produce the Pelorus sparkling wine. After the selected grapes are pressed in February, without crushing, the juice is allowed to settle before the Montrachet yeast is added. The base wines are fermented in a mixture of stainless steel tanks, large oak vats and small French oak barrels. Once the fermentation has started the wines are left to age on the lees (sediment) for 8 months before blending in November. After blending and racking, Prise de Mousse yeast is added to the bottles. It is then stored for 2 years before the sediment is removed by ‘riddling’, ‘disgorgement’ and a cork fitted. Recipe Turkey Burger with Cranberry Sauce and Brussels Sprout Coleslaw Fed up with the usual turkey recipes? Try these delicious turkey burgers topped with cranberry sauce and a Brussels sprout coleslaw. Serves: 2 Ingredients: Burgers 250g turkey breast mince ½ red onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, grated 1 egg, beaten 1 small apple peeled and coarsely grated 1 tsp smoked paprika Salt and pepper Olive oil (to cook) Brussels Sprout Coleslaw 125g Brussels sprouts, trimmed ½ red onion 1 carrot, peeled 50g Greek yoghurt 30g mayonnaise 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp lemon juice Salt and pepper ¼ tsp ground cumin Handful of chives, chopped Handful of parsley, chopped Rolls, lettuce and cranberry sauce, to serve Nutrition per burger with coleslaw: 340kcal, fat 14g (of which saturates 2.9g), carbohydrates 15g (of which sugars 13g), protein 36g, fibre 3.8g

Method: Place the mince in a bowl with the remaining ingredients for the burger and mix well. Shape the mixture into two burgers about 3cm thick. Chill for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas mark 5. Place the burgers on a lined baking tray and brush the tops lightly with the olive oil. Bake in the oven for 20-25 mins, turning halfway through cooking, until cooked through. To make the coleslaw, grate the Brussels sprouts, onion and carrot in a food processor. Place in a bowl. Mix together the yoghurt, mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, salt and pepper and cumin. Pour the yoghurt mixture over the vegetables and coat thoroughly. Stir in the herbs. Serve the burgers in buns with lettuce, a spoonful of cranberry sauce and the coleslaw.

This circular Peak District walk starts from Castleton, which is a popular spot all year round but especially so throughout the festive season when the village is beautifully illuminated with Christmas lights. This walk follows a relatively low level circuit of the head of the valley offering good views of the Great Ridge. You are also able to see the large landslip on the flank of Mam Tor. There is a large pay and display car park adjacent to the Tourism Information Centre at grid ref. SK149829. There are plenty of opportunities for refreshments in the village either before you start the walk or after you have returned.

Lose Hill from near Castleton

The Route 1. Exit the car park and turn left along Buxton Road and walk as far as the T-junction. Turn right here along Back Street which leads to the Market Place. Here bear right and continue along The Stones which leads directly into Goosehill. 2. Towards the end of this lane take the signed footpath (grid ref. SK147826) bearing right towards Speedwell Cavern with the wall to your immediate right. This path climbs gently offering good views to your right of the Castleton Ridge. 3. Reaching the road by Speedwell Cavern (grid ref. SK139827), take the footpath almost opposite (just to your right). This leads through a field to a junction of paths (not too evident) where you turn right down to another road (grid ref. SK139826). Turn left along this road, which is the old main road to Buxton but now closed after the large landslip on the southern flank of Mam Tor. Continue along this road for just under a mile to reach the site of the landslip where an information board tells the story of what happened.

The Importance of Gut Health

The gut and the brain are linked both physically and physiologically; they talk to each other continually. The gut is like the advisor to the brain, telling it all it needs to know about what’s going on in a person’s life. That’s why, when you’re anxious about something, like an exam, race or interview, your brain will communicate this by speeding up the mobility of your gut. You get that ‘stomach churning’ sensation. The function of the gut relies upon the microbiota, millions of microbes that live in the gut, and the ratio of good/bad microbes. A healthy gut contains a higher ratio and variety of beneficial microbes and only a few harmful ones. So, what can we do to aid gut health? Artificial sugars from slimming foods and diet drinks destroy probiotics which are made in the gut. The more of these you eat/drink, the more defenceless the gut becomes to damage or inflammation. In fact, a diet high in refined sugars will feed harmful bacteria, and negatively influence the function of the gut or, even worse, compromise the immune system. When chronically stressed, the body produces a hormone called cortisol, this also alters the flora of the gut, reducing good bacteria levels and making the walls of the gut

How to keep your gut healthy: - Avoid refined, processed food products and fizzy drinks; aim to drink 2 litres of water daily. - Eat a high fibre diet with loads of vegetables. Think ‘colour’ to get different nutrients and eat fruit sparingly - Eat whole grains – whole oats, brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, rye - If not in your diet already, add in some vegetable protein e.g. legumes, kidney beans and lentils. - Eat essential fatty acids daily e.g. nuts/seeds, avocado - Exercise daily – try 30 mins walking or practice yoga to help reduce stress - Always follow a course of antibiotics with probiotics to repopulate the gut with beneficial bacteria Please take time to do some research into the gut-brain connection as I feel it’s time we took more ownership of our own heath. We can do so much more ourselves to help keep our body fit and healthy. The Car Industry’s Most Eco-friendly Advancements Climate change is a hot topic in the car industry, but it’s not just the powertrain that’s the focus. Manufacturers have been working to make the whole car-building process more eco-friendly. Here, we take a look at some of the ways cars are getting greener. Mini Strip The Mini Strip is a one-off concept car that prioritises sustainability above all else.

Seaqual Yarn Last year, Fiat became the first manufacturer to use Seaqual yarn for its seat upholstery, with the Cupra Born’s bucket seats also using the material. Seaqual is an initiative based in Italy focussed on fighting plastic pollution in the ocean. Its ‘Yarn’ product is made from 100 per cent recycled materials, with about 10 per cent coming from upcycled marine litter.

Despite remaining a concept, the British firm says it can be used as a “catalyst for more sustainable use of resources in automotive design”.

Eco-friendly production Most major car manufacturers have announced plans to electrify their range and set targets for carbon neutral production at their factories. This is being achieved in various ways, such as powering factories with renewable energy.

Synthetic fuel Alternatives to electric vehicles are being considered, with a less talked-about option being synthetic fuels or e-Fuels.

Toyota uses water-based paints on cars, removes pollutants before they are released through smokestacks, cleans wastewater on-site before it is released, and grows forests inside its factory sites.

Essentially no different from the petrol and diesel that comes from crude oil, they are instead produced from carbon dioxide and hydrogen using renewable energy.

Last year, the Japanese company announced plans to build a “prototype city of the future” at the base of Mount Fuji. It will be fully connected and powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

Features include an unpainted body with just a film to protect it from corrosion, recycled Perspex for the panoramic roof, all but the necessary interior trim removed, and cork used throughout.

Porsche and Siemens are two big companies working together on this technology. Although it is currently more efficient to use that renewable energy to charge an electric vehicle, e-Fuels are a sustainable way to fuel the millions of existing petrol and diesel vehicles. Volvo’s wool interiors Volvo has been one of the manufacturers most committed to electrifying its line-up, but it’s also focused on sustainability elsewhere, offering a unique wool upholstery. It’s a blend that’s 30 per cent wool and 70 per cent recycled polyester, available at no extra cost on some vehicles.

Bentley of the future Bentley is a luxury car firm, with a mission to make sure it builds more sustainable cars. In 2019 it revealed the EXP 100 GT concept car, an autonomous electric vehicle. Everything about its construction had sustainability in mind. For example, some of the furnishings used a dyeing process that strives to achieve zero discharge of chemicals into the environment, while others come from a material called Vegea, which uses the by-products of winemaking. It also uses wood from naturally felled trees.

Panto: The UK’s Quirkiest Tradition? Oh, Yes It Is! As Christmas approaches, our thoughts turn to pantomime – a British tradition that’s guaranteed to mystify anyone who is unfamiliar with our culture. The name itself creates confusion: when US-based Baywatch actor Pamela Anderson received her first offer to appear in pantomime in Liverpool in 2010, she was convinced she would be “miming in a box” (bizarrely, she agreed to do it anyway). Like most traditions, pantomime has grown from customs and practices that have been transformed over time by changing tastes and fashions. There’s nothing like a Dame One of pantomime’s best-loved characters is the ‘Dame’. Nearly always played by a man, the Dame is generally portrayed as a vain, foolish woman, determined to get a husband at any price. But, with the possible exception of the villainous Ugly Sisters in Cinderella, the Dame never fails to gain the audience’s affection. It seems that we Brits simply love the idea of a man acting out a female role. Maybe that’s because the practice of men appearing as women on stage is deeply embedded in British culture. Until the law was changed in the early 1660s, it was illegal for women to act in theatres, so audiences were used to seeing men performing in female attire. When boys with unbroken voices, wearing costume and make-up, played roles such as ‘Juliet’ in Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, it was probably quite hard to spot the difference between a male and female actor, but when a grown man took on a role such as Juliet’s gossipy nurse, the audience would have been conscious of the gender reversal, and would have no doubt enjoyed its comic potential. Copying Commedia The first rule of panto is that the two young lovers must be happily married when the final curtain falls: Cinders must get her Prince, Jack must rescue Jill from the giant and Aladdin must pair up with his Princess. The idea of putting two lovers at the heart of the plot comes from Commedia dell’arte, a broad type of comic performance popular in Italy between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, which is said to be the forerunner of our traditional pantomime. Based on ‘stock’ characters, the plots generally featured a pair of lovers, a mischievous

servant, a clown or pierrot character and a moneygrabbing old man. While pantomime’s young lovers have changed little from Commedia dell’arte days, some of the other characters have been reworked to fit different plots. The clown is still with us in the shape of daft but lovable Simple Simon or Wishee Washee, while Cinderella’s footman Buttons is a pale reflection of the Commedia’s highspirited servants. Finally, the stock character of the old man appears variously as the foolish Baron Hardup (Cinderella), the villainous Fleshcreep (Jack and the Beanstalk) and the power-hungry Abanazar (Aladdin). Harlequinade to pantomime In the seventeenth century, British theatre borrowed some of Commedia’s characters to create an early type of pantomime known as a ‘Harlequinade’. But pantomime as we know it today was created when audiences began to demand more and more spectacle. Canny theatre producers discarded the less popular parts of the Harlequinade but kept the transformation scene, where Harlequin waved his magic baton (nowadays a fairy wand) to show fairytale characters and scenes dramatically changing before the audience’s eyes. By the Victorian era the Harlequinade had become the two-act pantomime we would recognise today. So pantomime goes on, changing year on year to suit current tastes, but in many respects remaining true to its earliest origins. It’s the one theatre entertainment that can successfully play to an audience aged between two and ninety-two, but will it continue to do so for centuries to come? Oh, yes it will! By Kate McLelland

Gardening The Season of Giving… to Nature There’s no better time to start giving to nature on a permanent basis, it’s the gift that keeps on giving. Within around two years, new developments in England will be expected to demonstrate that their projects will increase biodiversity by at least ten per cent. Known as Biodiversity Net Gain, this is a big change from what happens at the moment. The new Environment Bill will make it necessary for developers to use ecological features and environmental enhancements to protect and improve existing natural habitat and green infrastructure. Apply similar principles to a garden Anyone with a garden can start right away. Although not covered by the new Bill, we are all developers in a minor sense and should play a part in improving our immediate surroundings. We should all be nurturing nature so that biodiversity can triumph. Even if you have chosen artificial turf, biodiversity can be encouraged to triumph within the rest of the garden. You need to select plants with ample benefits for insects, allow wood piles and untidy areas to become part of the border, and use vertical fences and walls for further planting. Animals including birds, insects and small mammals need habitats, food and protection. Best plants for wildlife Most gardens have room for a tree, if only a small one.

Trees and shrubs can support a remarkable number of living things, so if you only have time to plant just one thing in your garden, make it a tree, a shrub or something that provides positive benefits for small creatures. If you have a little more time, a mixed hedge is just about the best you can offer wildlife. • Betula: there are 521 species of invertebrates that are known to feed on birch trees and more than 100 of these are exclusive to that particular type of tree. • Sorbus, the rowan tree: provides food for at least 160 species of insect and, of course, birds and small mammals love the berries. • Malus, the native crab apple: provides homes for at least 90 insect species. Many different insects visit the spring blossom, then birds and other creatures eat the fruits. Even ornamental varieties of this delightful tree provide rich biodiversity benefits. • Amelanchier, the June berry or serviceberry tree: has something to offer wildlife during several seasons. Early spring flowers for pollinators make this small tree look like a white cloud. It also provides multiple nesting opportunities for birds and juicy berries during the late summer. • Conifers: really are worth having! Some have earned negative press over the years but this doesn’t detract from their value to wildlife. There’s probably no better tree for providing nesting sites and protection for a wide range of creatures. • Flowering shrubs and perennials: choose single flowers over double, every time. They have an open shape that allows access for the pollinators and nectar-drinkers. Look for yellow stamens within a flower; these will support insects. • Purple and blue flowers are best for bees! Buddleia, catmint, lavender, pulmonaria, penstemon, allium and purple-flowering hardy geraniums can all be seen clearly. Ensure there is something flowering from early spring right through to autumn and even winter. • Butterflies love hebes, sedum (Hylotelephium varieties), Verbena bonariensis, Origanum, Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’, buddleia, scabious and many wild flowers such as knapweed. Short Story Too Much of a Good Thing “Happy Christmas, Dad.” Molly, laden with bags of gifts, gave her father a hug. “Are you going to invite me in or what?” “Before we go in, I need to have a quiet word with you.” Her father glanced nervously over his shoulder. “It’s about your mother.” “Why? What about her?” Molly frowned. Then she heard it, a low mournful braying. “That’s funny,” she said, “I thought I heard a donkey.” “You did.” He grimaced. “On the telly?” Molly laughed but her father did not. “No.” He steered her round the side of the house. “Under the carport.” There, next to the bins, was an old grey donkey regarding them balefully. “What’s it doing there?” Molly was astonished. “It’s mostly been leaving something for the roses,” her father grumbled, “and eyeing up my purple sprouting broccoli.” “Are you alright there fella?” Molly approached the animal cautiously. The donkey allowed her to stroke its muzzle and then began rooting around in her coat pocket for snacks. “What’s it really doing here?” “It just appeared here.” He shrugged helplessly. “And now I’m stuck with it.” “You can’t keep a stray donkey.” Molly was horrified. “It’s probably escaped from the donkey sanctuary in the village, have you thought of calling them?” “I was about to do just that,” he said, shivering in his Christmas jumper. “But then your mother saw it.” “And?” Molly had an awful feeling she knew where this was going. Molly’s mum loved donkeys. Over the years they’d bought her donkey tea towels, a donkey charm for her bracelet and a donkey teapot. Molly had even bought her, yet to be unwrapped, a donkey-shaped cushion for her armchair. “Mum thinks this is her Christmas present,” Molly said flatly. “Doesn’t she?” “She might have got that impression,” her father said sulkily. “And she seemed so thrilled, I didn’t want to disappoint her.”

“You’re going to have to tell her sometime,” Molly insisted. “There’ll be people out looking for it.” The donkey brayed softly as though in agreement. “How can I tell her that?” he protested weakly. “She said it’s just what she’s always wanted.” “Why don’t you just give her your real Christmas present instead?” Molly suggested. “What have you bought her?” “A set of donkey mugs,” he replied, after some thought, “to match her teapot.” “That might work,” Molly nodded, though she doubted it. Property Matters Bringing an Idea to Life...

‘as existing’ survey drawing. In close dialogue with the homeowner to establish exactly what they wanted and needed from the new space (which may be different!) we went on to designing the extension.

If you’re considering alterations to your home or an extension, it may be helpful to understand how the process works and exactly what role your architect plays in bringing your idea to fruition.

Following agreement on the plans, we submitted a planning application during which time we liaised with the planning officer to slightly amend the design so an approval was gained. After securing planning approval we moved on to the working drawings – the more technical ones – in order to secure building regulations approval.

This is a recently completed Pilkington Architecture project that involved the construction of an extension on the front of a detached house, over an existing study. The brief from the homeowner was to increase an existing small, single bedroom to a double with an ensuite bathroom. So, where did we start Before and After Before and After when the homeowner approached us? Well, firstly we did a bit of pre-application work with the planners to ascertain that an extension on the front elevation would be acceptable. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day… Yes, I know it’s a very well-loved Christmas song, but I’ve always wanted to give Roy Wood a good shake when those lyrics come blaring out of the radio (which is usually just as the last whiffs of smoke have faded away after Bonfire Night). I mean, seriously, the man’s delusional! Christmas is great and all that, but every day?!? He obviously has the assistance of many Christmas elves to get all the preparation done. It’s exhausting! The planning, the pre-planning, the saving, the spending, the cleaning, cooking, shopping, wrapping, decorating … and that’s before any of the celebrating starts. Even from a dietary perspective we couldn’t possibly have Christmas every day, we’d all have clogged arteries, rotten teeth and serious liver problems! Santa could kiss goodbye to his 364 days off and kids would be permanently exhausted from the loss of sleep through unrelenting excitement. Sprouts would have to be planted in every available allotment and don’t even get me started on the poor turkeys… Ok, so I’m sure Wizzard weren’t being literal with their lyrics and were referring to the sentimentality of Christmas rather than the practicality, but even without all the ludicrously OTT arrangements that often accompany this celebration, do I wish we could do it every day? No chance. And that’s not because I’m a miserable Scrooge! Quite the opposite, in fact. Yep, it’s true – despite the fact that I may have come across a little anti-Christmas, I do in fact love the festive season. Yes there’s no doubt that the planning and preparation puts a strain on already busy households at times, but there’s enjoyment to be had even in the tedious jobs like wrapping. I love prettifying parcels full of mystery and promise! The look on your kids’ faces when they’re investigating a gift of a strange size or

shape is priceless (although I did somewhat regret disguising a small box inside about 8 other larger wrapped boxes last year…I hadn’t realised quite how much wrapping I’d committed to when I started that little ruse!) The sparkly lights, decorating the tree, the trip to the panto, the parties, the carols, the nativities, the delicious festive food (oh, the food!), the daft games, the family get-togethers, the laughter, the love … yes, Christmas is magical. But still, every day? No way. Not even twice a year. You can definitely have too much of a good thing. Much of the excitement of Christmas is in the anticipation. Kids of all ages (and many adults, too) thrive on the buzz of the festive season. Once we cut through the stress of perceived perfection (because really, who cares whether your pyjamas match or you’ve got a home-made door wreath?) we can enjoy the special moments – from evenings under a blanket watching Nativity or Home Alone for the umpteenth time to writing letters to Santa and putting out a carrot for Rudolph. Each family has their own unique way of doing Christmas and little quirky customs that become steeped in family tradition over the years, passed down through generations. All of these little things that slot into the days and weeks surrounding Christmas work together to make the whole season special. So, Roy, take heed from Amos Milburn: “Christmas comes but once a year” – and with good reason. When your kids are nearly bursting with barely contained excitement (topped up with excessive amounts of advent calendar and selection box sugar) and counting the sleeps until the big day, it’s something to be cherished. Relish the build-up to the special day (because, frankly, the day itself isn’t always the best part of the whole experience anyway) and, after last year’s restrictions, enjoy everything about Christmas 2021 to the fullest. Santa’s Identity Crisis… Ever wondered how different cultures celebrate Christmas around the world? Belper School students have been researching all things Christmas and Santa Claus’s identity! The jolly gift giver appears in the traditions of many countries but in each one, he or she takes on different guises, delivers a multitude of gifts and threatens a wide range of punishments. Tradition actually dresses our Santa in green – the red faced and clad more common appearance is an American import. In Norway, you’d need to be on the lookout for Julenisse: a gnome-like creature who wears a grey outfit to complement his grey beard. The Dutch Sinterclaas appears almost Papal in his snow-white vestments topped with a red Bishop’s mitre, cloak and slippers. The white clothes would be familiar in Germany where the female Christkind chooses a golden cape and crown to set off her long blonde curls. Beyond a simple change of outfit, Santa sometimes moves beyond the human: in Sweden and Finland, the Yule goat Joulupukki clip-clops from house to house asking if any well-behaved children are within. When they do turn up, the Santa figure is often accompanied by darker companions. The French try to avoid Pere L, whose whip is used against those that Pere Noel has no gifts for. The Yule Lads of Iceland are mischievous elves who are likely to leave rotten potatoes in the shoes of those on the infamous naughty list. Dutch miscreants have it worse as Grumpus threatens to kidnap them in chains. Abduction also looms large in Russia as Father Frost may employ the technique and, in central Europe, Krampus goes the whole hog by whipping the bad with birch twigs before topping it off with a kidnapping. As he lives in such varied places as Turkey and the North Pole, travels by either boat, horse, regular sleigh or magically flying sleigh; has to perform numerous costume changes and witnesses untold

harm to the naughty, it’s no wonder that this mixed up individual needs nearly 11 months off a year! Christmas of Culture: In Swahili, ‘happy’ or ‘Merry Christmas’ is ‘heri ya krismasi’ the usual response would be ‘wewe pia’ (and you). Christmas in Kenya, like in many cultures, brings families together to rejoice. They may decorate Cyprus trees with colourful ribbons, balloons and paper decorations. Christians attend midnight Mass where they write poems, sing hymns and carols; you can expect a party with plenty of dancing! You may receive small gifts and occasionally food or tokens from missionaries. A Christmas Dinner could be a barbecue served with rice and chapatti flat bread, this is called a ‘nyama choma’. ‘Frohe Weihnachten’ – Germany will cheer! Traditionally, most people are off between December 24th and December 26th, so even if the person you are talking to might not be celebrating Christmas, you can be pretty sure they will have some time off. There are a plethora of Christmas traditions in Germany, the biggest is the Christmas markets or Weihnachtsmarkt; they’re an essential part of German culture. Most Chinese people who celebrate Christmas do so as a happy occasion for get-togethers of friends, relatives, and couples. Christmas parties can be held at a McDonalds, cafe or a bar. Although it is celebrated, it is more like Valentine’s Day or St Patrick’s Day. Even though they celebrate it, there are still a few rules, for example, they can’t sing carols, or have religious celebrations. Fancy cellophane wrapped ‘Christmas apples’ are often given as a present. To summarise, Christmas all around the world is about bringing people together and being happy. Let’s learn from this: don’t worry about not being able to afford those expensive gifts this year. There’s no bigger gift than family. Merry Christmas, Belper! Parenting Keeping Children Safe Online While children and teenagers are often far more tech savvy than us parents, their lack of life experience makes them vulnerable. One in eight 12-15 year olds experiences cyber bullying, and a growing number are being groomed online. Check parental controls Digital devices usually come with parental controls that you can enable. Popular children’s online games, such as Roblox, also tend to give parents a choice of settings. You can prevent your child from accessing certain features, for example. You may want to adjust the settings so that your child can’t chat to strangers, and regularly check your child’s list of friends to make sure they haven’t added people they don’t know in real life. Talk to your child Ask your child to show you what they do when they’re playing their favourite digital games. You might also want to set up your own account, so you can explore a game to see whether there’s anything that concerns you. Make sure your child understands that they should never send photos to people they meet online, or give out personal details, such as their real name, email address or school name. Talk to your child about how easy it is for people to lie when they’re online. Above all, make sure your child knows that they can come to you if they experience anything that makes them feel uncomfortable, without you getting cross.

Social media Most social media sites only allow accounts to be set up by people aged 13 and up. However, they don’t require proof of age, so it’s down to parents to enforce the rules. Messaging apps and social media are useful for keeping in touch with friends but can be exploited by bullies and predators. Again, talk to your child about how to stay safe. You might want to help your teen set up their privacy controls and discuss what they should do if they’re trolled or contacted by someone they don’t know. Setting limits Most tablets allow you to set a limit for how many hours they can be used for each day. It’s more difficult to set time limits for older children, however, who may need to use laptops or tablets to do their homework. At the very least, you may want to agree times that your child isn’t allowed to use devices, such as meal times, the hour before bedtime and so on. Try to lead by example. If you’re constantly scrolling through social media feeds, it’s going to be hard to convince your child not to do the same. Local History Something from Strutts: Christmas Over the Years

Whether you remember joining in with Slade, yelling “IT’S CHRISTMAS” ‘til you were hoarse, humming ‘When a Child is Born’ along with Johnny Mathis, or maybe you were ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ with Brenda Lee – Christmas times have changed over the years. When Strutts first opened as a school in 1909, Christmas would have looked very different indeed. Continuing traditions established during Victorian times, when Christmas carols began to be regularly sung, often in pubs (a tradition still present in parts of Derbyshire) and Christmas trees became a firm festive fixture, celebrations would include trimming up with plenty of evergreens, ribbons and candles and making home-made decorations such as paper chains. The exchanging of Christmas cards was becoming very popular too, although some of the scenes depicted were a little surreal and may have featured Father Christmas wearing a blue hooded robe rather than the familiar red and white of today. Christmas dinner was not necessarily turkey – goose was often the choice or possibly pheasant pie, ox-heart or a pig’s head might have graced the table. Mince pies, dates, figs and plum pudding would have featured on the festive menu, with the last Sunday before Advent known as ‘Stir-Up Sunday’ when the family would take a turn at stirring the pudding batter, adding a good luck coin into the mix. Strutts School Hall has witnessed many gatherings and celebrations over the years and research for this article has prompted many a Strutty Banger’s memory! These stories have included recollections of Christmas dinner in the Hall and parties for every form. Also, Christmas dances and practising the ballroom waltz and foxtrot steps in the gym with the P.E. teachers, taking the hand of your partner for a barn dance, Military Two-Step, Valeta or Gay Gordon, and not forgetting joining the choir or the orchestra (or both), so that you would get to go to their parties! Other stories relate to a time when pupils were asked to provide entertainment for the parties, recalling memories of ‘Little Donkey’ being played on the grand piano in the Hall, accompanied by a couple of friends. said that there was something special too about seeing your fellow pupils in clothes other than school uniform, and how amusing it was to have the bemused teachers watching over the activities from the side-lines. There are also recollections that for some of the Fifth and Sixth Forms, a glitterball appeared in the Hall for Christmas parties, hanging from the high ceiling. A fire was lit in the fireplace and, as the glitterball gently turned in the darkness, the Hall sparkled with the fire’s reflection and became a magical place, completely different in atmosphere from the busy area it was usually known for when changing rooms between lessons or when school assemblies took place. Several people recall the Carol Service which took place at St Peter’s Church, to accommodate all pupils and staff. It was said to be the second most important occasion to Founder’s Day in March. The school choir and orchestra would have spent many a lunch time practising special Christmas pieces. It was a service of nine Lessons and carols and readings were by a mixture of Sixth Formers and members of staff, standing at the huge eagle lectern. Taking place on the afternoon of the penultimate day of term, there was just about enough room for a few parents to be able to attend. It was quite a feat getting the whole school in place, but the sound made by everyone singing together was impressive. This grand building is still serving our community today. The wonderful Hall continues to host a wide variety of entertainment, activities and events as it has done throughout the years, adding new memories to the echoes of those that, lovingly, still remain. The Tale of Greyfriars Bobby In Edinburgh’s Candlemaker Row, there stands a drinking fountain topped by a statue of a small dog. The inscription underneath reads: “A tribute to the affectionate fidelity of Greyfriars Bobby. In 1858, this faithful dog followed the remains of his master to Greyfriars Churchyard and lingered near the spot until his death in 1872.” How the legend began ‘Greyfriars Bobby’ was a Skye terrier who reputedly spent fourteen years guarding the grave of his owner, until he finally died in January 1872. Bobby owed his name to the graveyard of Greyfriars Kirk, where he became something of a local celebrity. Bobby’s master was John Gray, a night watchman employed by Edinburgh City Police. Legend has it that Gray adopted Bobby the Skye terrier to keep him company on the long, dark nights he spent patrolling the city. However, after several years walking the chilly streets of Edinburgh by night, the nightwatchman’s health began to suffer and he died of tuberculosis on 15th February 1858. It wasn’t long before local people passing through Greyfriars Kirk graveyard noticed that John Gray’s dog appeared to have taken up residence beside his master’s grave, refusing to leave even in the worst of weather. The graveyard keeper tried to shoo Bobby away on a number of occasions, but the dog would always return. In the end the keeper gave up and created a small shelter, with a bed made of sacking, next to the grave. It’s reported that crowds would gather at the entrance of the graveyard almost daily, waiting for the one o’clock gun that Bobby took as his signal to leave the grave for his midday meal. Baroness Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, President of the Ladies Committee of the RSPCA, was so deeply moved by his story that she sought permission from the City Council to erect a public drinking fountain with a statue of Bobby mounted on top. Friends and supporters In 1867 a new by-law was passed, requiring all dogs in the city to be licenced. As Bobby had no master to buy his licence Sir William Chambers, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, stepped in to pay for one.

William Dow – a former friend of John Gray – would occasionally treat Bobby to a meal at a local coffee house where the two used to meet. At other times Bobby’s meals were provided by a man called James Brown, who looked after the cemetery. Finally, after fourteen years waiting patiently by his master’s grave, Greyfriars Bobby fell ill from cancer of the jaw. He died in 1872 but tourists continued to visit the graveyard where Bobby had waited. A novel (‘Greyfriars Bobby’ by Eleanor Atkinson, was published in 1912) and two films, ‘Greyfriars Bobby’ (1961) and ‘The Adventures of Greyfriars Bobby’ (2006), were released. Shaggy dog story? The story of Greyfriars Bobby is a wonderful tale of canine loyalty and dedication, but like all good stories it has probably been embellished during the telling and re-telling. Dr Jay Bondeson, a historian and senior lecturer at Cardiff University, believes that the story was largely fabricated by the graveyard keeper James Brown, who received money from tourists eager to donate towards Bobby’s food. Dr Bondeson also believes that the original dog died in 1867 and was replaced by another Skye terrier. Whatever the truth behind the legend may be, the story is typical of many accounts of animals that faithfully wait for their human owners, including a recent report of a loyal dog that waited in the lobby of China’s Taikang Hospital for over three months after his elderly owner died from Covid-19. The tale of Greyfriars Bobby has warmed the hearts of visitors to Edinburgh for over 150 years and will no doubt continue to do so for many years to come. By Kate McLelland

Upbeat Now that the clocks have gone back and the darker nights are drawing in, we would like to remind Derbyshire residents to think about home security during the late afternoon and evenings. Although our area continues to be a safe place to live, taking some simple steps can reduce the opportunities for potential thieves to use the dark nights to their advantage: • Keep windows and doors locked and secure at all times, whether you are in or out. • Keep valuables out of sight and out of reach of cat flaps, letterboxes, downstairs doors and windows. • Leave your car keys in a secure place and not on a key hook. • Use outdoor security lighting. • Make your home look occupied when you are out – draw your curtains, leave a lamp on or leave a radio playing. • If it will be dark before you get home, set your lights on timers. • Consider fitting a burglar alarm - make sure it is installed properly by a reputable firm and is working. Also remember to set it before you leave home. • A thorny hedge along the boundary of your property may put thieves off, as may a gravel path, as it’s noisy to walk on. • Keep gates, garages, sheds or outbuildings secure and ensure no tools are left outside.

Emma was nominated by Nadja Guy, also of Belper: “During the pandemic Emma has been involved in food shopping, weekly, for those people who are either elderly or have been self-isolating. She also voluntarily arranged for people to contact other elderly people weekly so that they have some contact and conversation. In addition, Emma spends at least an hour a week speaking with the same elderly lady who lives on her own. They have chatted, laughed and established a great friendship. Meanwhile Emma works full-time, cares for her parents, does their weekly shopping etc. as her Dad is wheelchair bound. I think she deserves a happy bunch of flowers as she provides a smile to many vulnerable and lonely people in the local community.” Nadja Guy Nominate someone to receive the next bouquet.
