WELCOME LETTER Hello readers Welcome to the February/March edition of All Things Local. Well, 2021 isn’t off to quite as promising a start as we’d hoped but, with the news of another vaccine being rolled out across the UK at the time of writing, we sincerely hope that the situation will soon start to improve. This time last year we were just beginning to hear about the outbreak of COVID-19 in China; how things have changed since then. When the first national lockdown was announced on 23rd March 2020 we had no idea that we’d still be in a similar situation almost a year on, and thank goodness we didn’t know! At that time I think it would have been more than we could bear. But, when faced with this global crisis, the strength of human spirit that we’ve seen has been amazing. Up and down the country we’ve seen images and heard tales of people supporting each other through the toughest times most of us have ever had to face. Locally, many people in our community have done wonderful, selfless things to help others who’ve been badly affected – whether that’s health-wise, socially, emotionally, practically or financially. Businesses have found innovative ways to adapt; those that have thrived have helped those who have struggled; neighbourhoods have come together to spread joy and happiness, from advent windows to food parcels to singing on doorsteps. If you know of a stand-out special ‘someone’, don’t forget that you can thank them with a bouquet of flowers by nominating them for Friendship Blooms – turn to page 79 to see this issue’s deserving recipient. Once again, we’d like to thank all our readers and advertisers for your support and messages. We are privileged to be able to bring our community magazine to you all and we really appreciate the messages of thanks that we

receive from readers who enjoy flicking through our pages, and from advertisers who are grateful for all the local custom they’ve gained. Just a Thought... ‘Zoom, Shake the Room’

If someone had said to me this time last year that they were going to ‘Zoom’ me, I would have had serious concerns over the integrity of their intentions. Fast forward to 2021 and I am safe in the knowledge that it is merely an invitation to a meeting where neither of us is required to leave the comfort of our own living rooms. There has been much debate about the ‘new ways’ that Post Pandemia (I made that up but it sounds pretty) life looks. I have to admit that I am usually a techno sceptic and if I can use something/ anything that was the order of the day in the 1920’s rather than the current century I certainly will do. Alas, I find myself almost one whole year from the pandemic pandemonium crashing into our lives and I really do like a bit of a Zoom sesh! It has some excellent environmental advantages – less travel, some corking cash savings and the

absolute best of all – we are all Time Lords (and Lordesses – again another Flissism, sorry!). It is not only our work where virtual meetings have added extra value: connecting with loved ones and checking in with the community has never been easier. Do we miss that ‘in person’ interaction? Absolutely. Is Zoom and its counterparts (other video conferencing is available…) a replacement for a face-to-face, toe-to-toe meeting of the minds? Absolutely not all of the time – but some of the time it has definite value and has been a revelation in ease of use. Seriously, if I can use it then anyone can! For now then, it is more Zoom and less ‘In the Room’ dear reader – but let’s face it, you all LOVE that Bahamas beach background!

Travel: Cruising on the River Dart, South Devon Sun, sand and sea, Devon is fabulous, but if you feel like a change from the beach, a river cruise is a lovely way to relax away from the crowds. The Dart has its source up on Dartmoor, its east and west branches joining in Dartmeet before flowing into the Channel at Dartmouth. Among the options is the award-winning Round Robin starting in Paignton, where a steam train takes you along the scenic coast down to the estuary. The half-hour journey ends in Kingswear on the left bank, then it’s just three minutes on the ferry across to Dartmouth. In this land of deep water and steep valleys there are no bridges until you reach Totnes, about eight miles away at the end of the cruise.

Departures are governed by the tide and passengers may have time to explore Dartmouth, a gorgeous little place where myriad yachts glisten in a coastal inlet. Framed by green hills, as lush as velvet, neat cottages beckon up the lanes festooned in pastel colours and flowering plants. But soon the cruise is ready to go – paddle steamer only on special dates – first downstream if the tide is right for a close-up look at the medieval castles that once guarded the narrow entrance to the estuary. Feel the currents? Time to turn around and enjoy the most enticing views of Dartmouth, town clinging to the hills, dazzling yachts, the Britannia Royal Naval College, an impressive late Victorian building, and you might just spot your nostalgic steam train puffing away through the trees.

Then all is quiet, just the occasional boat sending ripples across the water or the breeze whispering in the trees. The oaks which gave the Dart its Celtic name may be sparse but there’s plenty of greenery along the meandering banks, while up on the hills meadows glow in luminous light. Salmon, trout and more, the river is full of fish, a treat for black-headed gulls and other birds – here an osprey, there a rare dipper, a lonely heron, a colourful kingfisher and egrets galore. Most exciting in season are the Canadian geese feeding in the shallows and, if you’re lucky, grey seals basking on the rocks or swimming alongside the boat. In this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a few villages doze along the banks – like Stoke Gabriel, its winding streets gathered around an 800-year-old yew tree, or Dittisham with delightful seafood cafés and a passenger ferry to Greenway across the river. Owned by the National Trust, this was Agatha Christie’s holiday home and inspiration for a few murder mysteries. You’ll need a special trip to visit house and garden, but as you sail past you’re sure to see the elegant Georgian house rising on the hill among the trees. A little further, the Sharpam Estate may also tempt you back with award-winning wines and its own delicious cheese. Ninety minutes or so after leaving Dartmouth, Totnes greets you like a fairy tale with bohemian lanes, cream teas and panoramic views from its hilltop castle. By Solange Hando

Diary of Your Times This February 23rd would have been the birthday of Samuel Pepys. He was an administrator for the admiralty and a Member of Parliament. However, he was most famous for keeping a diary. He wrote in it every day for nearly a decade. His journal described the events of the English Restoration period. Notably, he writes about the Great Fire of London in 1666 and the Plague of 1665. Additionally, he records both his monetary and romantic affairs. So, if you want to follow in the footsteps of Pepys, how do you set about becoming a diarist yourself? Lots of people have tried to write a diary or journal at some point in their lives. A lot of those people, including myself, end up giving up. The inevitable missed blank pages become all too intimidating for me to begin again. But you don’t need to put yourself under pressure to write every single day. That’s the quickest way to lose motivation. Maybe you want to write when you feel angry – it can help to express your frustration. You can even go the whole hog and rip it up dramatically afterwards!

Pepys initially intended his diaries to be a secret but, before his death, he included the code he’d used to encrypt his writing. This allowed them to be read by anyone today. You might not want the whole world to read your diaries, but it could be a good way to remember and record your times.

Recipe Tartiflette

This rich and cheesy potato gratin makes a fabulous warming winter supper. Serve with salad and crusty bread. Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 hour Ingredients: 1kg Charlotte potatoes, halved 1 tbsp olive oil 2 small onions, peeled and thinly sliced 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 4 smoked bacon rashers, finely chopped 100ml dry white wine 100ml double cream 4 tbsp crème fraiche Salt and freshly ground black pepper 150g Reblochon cheese, rind removed and sliced Sprig of parsley, to garnish Method: Boil the potatoes in a large pan of lightly salted water until just tender. Drain well, cool for 10 minutes then cut into thin slices. Preheat the oven to 200C / fan 180C / gas mark 6. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onions and garlic for 5-6 minutes, stirring. Add the chopped bacon and continue cooking until the onions are golden and tender. Pour the wine into the pan and bring to the boil. Boil until the liquid has almost evaporated.

Layer the potatoes and onion mixture in a large square baking dish. Mix together the cream and crème fraiche and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour over the potatoes. Lay the cheese slices on top. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve garnished with parsley.

Use any other cheese you prefer. Try mature Cheddar, Taleggio or Gruyère.

Word on Wine At the time of writing this piece, we had just gone from a 5-day Christmas to one day. With the hope that things are improving by the time you read this, let us look forward to a good 2021 and summer. To try and bring some sun into the end of the winter, and for what we hope to be a better year, let us talk about a wine from sunnier climes. In the north-west corner of Spain is the denominación de origen (D.O.) region of Rueda. This region of Spain sits close to regions better known for the full-bodied red wines of Ribero del Duero and Toro. Rueda is in the region of Castile and León, with the river Duero running east to west through the region before finally ending in the Atlantic in Portugal. The region sits on the high plateau and has characteristics of a typical continental climate with a long cold winter, a brief spring followed by a dry hot summer. The wine I would like to tell you about is a sauvignon blanc, made by Felix Solis S.L. from their Viña Albali range of wines. The grapes come from the Castronuña region on the River Duero. This is a lighter alternative to the powerful New Zealand sauvignon blancs. Felix Solis S.L. Winery in Valdepeñas was founded in 1975 on the side of the road between Madrid and Cadiz. It is now the biggest family owned winery in the world, producing a range of 14 different wines. The wines are made in a combination of traditional and modern techniques with a range of experienced winemakers. The Solis family owns over 400 hectares of vines and works in partnership with 5,000 family owned vine growers. The winery in Valdepeñas is virtually automated covering some 120,000m² and can bottle up to 150,000 bottles an hour. The large cellar houses 50,000 American oak barrels and its temperature controlled warehouse, the largest in Europe, can house 45,000 pallets of wine in bottles. The total storage capacity is around 200 million litres of wine. The grapes for this wine from Rueda are picked around the second week of August, when the grapes are at their optimum ripeness to create a well-balanced white wine. The juice undergoes a short period of cold maceration for around 6 hours, followed by fermentation at 14>16°C in stainless steel tanks for 15-17 days. Prior to bottling, the wine spends a short ageing period on the grape lees to produce an elegant, fresh and fruit driven wine. Technical Details: Grapes: 100% sauvignon blanc. Appearance: Clean – clear wine. Nose / Aroma: Aromas of tropical notes of melon, lime, peach, mango and passion fruit. Taste: Fresh on the palate with lively grapefruit flavours with a crisp herbaceous finish. Alcohol by Volume: 13%.

The Guinness World Record for the largest chocolate bar was set by Thorntons in September 2011. The bar weighed nearly 5,800kg. It takes about a year for a cacao tree to produce enough pods to make about ten small-sized chocolate bars. Cacao trees bear pods that contain up to fifty beans. The trees and pods are delicate so always have to be harvested by hand. The word chocolate can be traced back to the Aztec word xocoatl, the name for a bitter drink made from cacao beans. In 1847, Fry’s – based in Bristol – created the first mass produced chocolate bar. Milk chocolate was invented soon after with the help of Henri Nestlé. More than one billion KIT KAT® products are eaten in the UK every year – the equivalent of 564 fingers every second.

Beer As we start to look forward with renewed optimism and with 2020 far behind us and best forgotten, I wanted to use this opportunity to look at the trends and make some predictions of what 2021 may hold for the beer world. Something that, on the surface, seems paradoxical has been occurring in the numerous consumer surveys. The percentage of drinkers saying that both ‘high alcohol content’ and ‘low alcohol content’ are important in their purchase decision has been growing. We can reconcile this disconnect by remembering that the growth is driven by different drinkers and different occasions, but this dual growth has driven much of the style change over the past few years.

In terms of what can we expect to see in 2021, I’d like to highlight a few different styles that many economists, more clued up than me, are talking up: Lagers have had a bit of an unsavoury reputation in the beer world, often not being seen as a ‘true’ craft brew. While IPAs have continued to be a widespread choice with brewers and customers alike, they’re not to everyone’s tastes due to their hoppy nature, which some people may find a little too bitter. Lager is one of the most well-loved kinds of beer in pubs and across the world, and customers who are dipping their toes into the craft beer market in a bid to support small or local businesses may prefer to opt for something that feels recognisable. It is therefore expected that more microbreweries will delve into the lager market in 2021 to capture this audience. Juicy/hazy: This IPA sub style is being driven by numerous demographics. Female drinkers and drinkers ages 21-25, 26-34, and 35-44 were more interested in this style. That’s a recipe for continued growth.

Tart: Tart doesn’t necessarily fit neatly into the patterns I identified above, partially because like IPA, it has the malleability to take on different forms. From session sours to higher ABV smoothie sours with fruit, tart isn’t one style, but has numerous forms. It’s polarising in consumer surveys, but with 21 to 24-year-olds more interested in it, it likely has room to grow driven by the next generation of craft drinkers. Rosé wine has long been a popular drink. Inspired by the pink wine, for beer and wine lovers there is a hybrid of the two – rosé beer. While it is not a totally new product – Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware in the US has been brewing rosé beers since the 1990s – more breweries have been experimenting with rosy brews. To produce this pink drink, grapes are used as a fermentable. With fruity, rosé beer growing in popularity, especially with consumers in the warmer months, it is expected that more microbreweries will be tapping into the trend in 2021. The Society of Independent Brewers’ (SIBA) British Craft Beer Report, which was published in March, found that sales of non-alcoholic or low alcohol beer was up by 30% since 2016. It also found that 23% of 18 to 24-year-olds are now teetotal, an increase of 6% from the previous 12 months. It’s no surprise then that no or low alcohol options have been popping up across the market. As consumers continue to look for booze-free tipples that provide a different experience from regular soft drinks, the ‘nolo’ market (as it has been dubbed) is set to barrel along into 2021.

Six In-car Technologies That Changed the Game Some technology that we take for granted today was revolutionary when it was introduced. Nowadays, drivers have access to a wide variety of technologies that make driving safer, easier and more enjoyable than ever before, and we look at some of the most important of those. Airbags Airbags made a huge difference, protecting occupants from serious injuries caused by hitting their head on hard cabin trim. Although they were developed in the 1950s, they didn’t come to Europe until 1980 when the Mercedes S-Class offered them as an option. It wasn’t until the late 1990s before airbags were offered as an option at the very least on the majority of cars. Automatic air conditioning Ever suffered the discomfort of driving in the height of summer or a restricted view from a steamed-up windscreen in a car that doesn’t have air conditioning? That’s why air con is one of the biggest innovations in motoring, making driving comfortable for millions of people. And automatic air con lets you set a cabin temperature that remains constant, a luxury many take for granted in 2020.

Most modern cars now come with Bluetooth, which means drivers can play music and podcasts through their car speakers by hitting play on their phones. The latest advancement is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which provide simplified versions of each operating system to be used in the car. Advanced cruise control For some drivers, cruise control – which sees the car maintain a set speed itself – is a controversial subject. Those against it think it allows drivers to concentrate less, while others say it frees brain space to let them concentrate more on their surroundings. Either way, cruise-control systems have advanced to the point where modern cars are almost considered autonomous. These systems combine different technologies, such as radar-assisted cruise control and lane-keep assist, to maintain a vehicle’s place in traffic without any driver input. Car-to-smartphone connectivity As well as integrating infotainment systems with smartphones for entertainment purposes, a more recent innovation has seen manufacturers creating apps that let owners control aspects of their car from their phone.

Satellite navigation The advent of in-car satnav systems in the 1990s did away with the need to work out a route before travelling and then using the map on your journey to find your way – which is incredibly distracting. Still considered something of a luxury, it’s an option most people choose. The peace of mind it provides is usually worth the extra cost.

In-car entertainment Providing entertainment while driving has always been a selling point, with early radios replaced by tape decks, CD players, and in modern cars, smartphone connectivity.

These are particularly popular in electric vehicles, as you can check charging or prime the battery to a good operating temperature before setting off. Footnotes: They’re only feet! We really do take our feet for granted don’t we? After all, they are only feet aren’t they? Perhaps we should think a little bit more about what these unglamorous parts of the body are and what they do for us. Each foot contains 26 bones – that’s 52 bones between them or, in other words, over a quarter of the body’s 206 bones. The way that these bones work with each other gives approximately 40 joints in each foot! The joint behind the big toe takes approximately one and a half times your bodyweight each and every time you take a step. Not bad for a joint not much bigger than an Oxo cube! They give us constant feedback about the surface we are walking on and, thanks to all those bones, joints and untold ligaments and muscles in the foot and the lower leg, they enable us to walk and balance safely on very uneven ground. Even the toenails have an active role by protecting the toes and helping with balance. The skin is three to four times thicker on the heel and ball of the foot than anywhere else on the body, offering protection to the bones and muscles of the foot in everyday use. We even have a pad of fat under the foot which acts as a natural shock absorber which again protects the underlying tissues. So, when you force them to work in shoes that aren’t really the right size or shape, or force them to stand on hard floors for hours on end, or walk or run miles, don’t worry – after all, they are only feet! Fitness Matters

Why HIIT Workouts Are so Effective HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workouts are massive at the moment and, as the New Year starts and we are all pushed for time, this way of training is even more attractive. It is effective and time efficient but, as time has gone by, this training method gets farther away from the science that proved the effectiveness of these types of sessions. Just because high intensity’s good it doesn’t mean that adding more and more workload is better. This is the opposite of what you want to do! Adding more time doesn’t make the workout more effective, in fact with HIIT you could argue it reduces the effectiveness of the training. The name of the game is efficiency. There are so many ways to train, scientists have studied HIIT and, when done correctly, you can see great benefits in short periods of time. The key to a good HIIT programme is doing everything you can to maximise intensity; it is this intensity that enables you to keep the workouts shorter but still experience benefits such as fat loss, cardiovascular improvements and muscle building. But, if you don’t set up your workout this way, and keep intensity high, you take away the power of these workouts. Your ‘work’ periods influence your rest period so if you increase your work time, make sure you increase your rest period too.

Some examples of work to rest intervals could be: • 10 secs of work – 50 secs rest • 20 secs of work – 90 secs of rest • 30 secs of work – 110 secs of rest The key to HIIT is intensity: push your body to maximum output (yours, not someone else’s) rest long enough to be able to keep the intensity at its highest. Everyone’s workout will be different, based on body type, fitness, experience, goals etc. I would recommend doing this type of training 3 times per week; you can do this type of training with all activities. If you’re walking, walk faster; if you’re swimming, swim faster; if you’re weight training, lift heavier; if you’re running, run faster. Remember, the key to HIIT training is maintaining a high level of intensity for the entire workout, but take the rest periods to be able to maintain the intensity. This Peak District walk takes in some of the highlights of the Chatsworth Estate and also provides an opportunity to visit this great stately home if desired. The start is the Calton Lees car park (Grid ref. SK258685) on the west side of the B6012 road from Baslow to Rowsley.

Cross this and continue on the clear path that climbs gently across the gritstone edge. 4. Joining a track keep straight ahead into the woodland. Keep right at the first junction (grid ref. SK269691) and continue ahead on this main track. It turns sharp right, offering glimpses of fields and Park Farm through the trees on your right, before swinging left to continue in a northerly direction.

The Route 1. Exit the car park onto the B6012 and turn right towards Rowsley. Cross this busy main road as soon as is safe and continue along the grass verge towards the bridge across the River Derwent. 2. Cross the bridge and continue along the main road to the first road junction where you turn left along a narrow lane. There is far less traffic now and you gradually ascend with improving views across pastures on your left. 5. Passing Swiss Lake with Swiss Cottage on the far shore, the track reaches the outflow of Emperor Lake on your left. Stay on the main track. When you see the Hunting Lodge through the trees avoid the temptation of taking the direct path through the trees, instead staying

on the track to reach a junction (grid ref. SK265707). A short way to the left from here will take you to the Hunting Lodge. 6. Return to this junction after enjoying the extensive views from the Hunting Lodge and walk north from the junction on the clear track. Look out for a signed footpath on the left of the track at grid ref. SK265710. Take this path, descending to enter open parkland. You need to cross the grass taking a north-westerly line crossing two access tracks to reach a path, a rather fine rotary gate at grid ref. SK260721. 7. Do not go through the gate, instead turn south on the path. This will take you past the cricket ground and then alongside the River Derwent.

8. Reaching the main access road to Chatsworth House (Grid ref. SK257701), cross the bridge and once on the other side bear left to follow the river downstream. The path gradually climbs to reach the main road opposite Calton Lees car park. Take care crossing this busy road and return to the start. Please maintain social distancing whilst walking. Gardening Get Planting Although autumn is viewed as the best time for planting, trees, shrubs, climbers or herbaceous plants will have enough time to get established if planted now. Plan a shopping trip to fill garden spaces with colour, shape or perfume. Start by digging or forking the soil over and removing pernicious weeds or debris. Measure the available spaces so that the chosen plant does not outgrow its new home too quickly, and make a note of how sunny or shaded the spot is. There should be a good selection of shrubs to choose from right now that will provide springtime colour – perhaps a flowering currant with flower trusses in red or pink, a star magnolia, Magnolia stellate, with white or palest pink star-shaped flowers, or, if you have space, an amelanchier, great value because they have tiny, very pretty white flowers with foliage in fiery shades come autumn. On acidic soils or in a good-sized pot of ericaceous compost, camellias perform well and their large flowers in reds, pinks, yellows and white look great. There is also Exochorda macrantha, ‘The Bride’, with delightful arching stems studded with tiny white flowers; the list goes on and on. Plant your purchases as soon as possible. Dig a good-sized hole for each, making it several inches wider than the root ball all round, and fork the base and sides of the hole over thoroughly, especially in clay – where you should prepare the soil with a fork, as this causes less compaction of the soil than using a spade. If the soil is either heavy clay or extremely light and sandy, dig a bigger hole, gradually incorporating more of the ‘natural’ soil into the compost or planting mix as you near the sides of the hole. Before planting, remove the pot and firmly tease out the roots – soaking the root ball in a bucket

of water for an hour or two helps if they are quite congested and is essential for the plant to get properly established. Prune out any really large, woody roots encircling the root ball to release the remainder of the roots. The plant should be planted at the same depth that it was in its pot, with just the roots, and no part of the stem, below ground level. Watering in helps settle the soil around the fine roots, even if it is fairly moist. Finally, stand back and check the stem is upright. Make a note of the plant’s precise name and details, or remove the label and keep it somewhere safe, so you know how to look after your plant and how big it may grow! The dogs that sniff out sickness We are all accustomed to the idea of police tracker dogs searching for hidden drugs or explosives, sniffing out evidence at a murder scene or following the trail of a missing person. But what if a dog could use its remarkable sense of smell for another purpose, such as detecting disease within the human body? The idea sounds like something out of a science-fiction novel, but for some time dogs have been used to detect and warn against all kinds of medical conditions. So finely tuned are these dogs’ ultra-sensitive noses that they are capable of picking up trace odours that are the equivalent of dropping a teaspoon of sugar into two Olympic-sized swimming pools. The charity Medical Detection Dogs (MDD), based in Milton Keynes, is at the forefront of research into medical sniffer dogs, and MDD’s researchers already have animals capable of spotting the scent of malaria, cancer and Parkinson’s disease. Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, however, attention has turned to whether the dogs would be able to detect traces of coronavirus on skin and clothing. Covid detectives “When we have a particular disease or condition our odour changes, and a dog is able to detect this odour and, when trained, to tell us about it,” explained the charity’s Chief Executive Dr Claire Guest, speaking recently to ITV News. It turns out that the coronavirus that caused the Covid-19 pandemic has its own distinctive chemical signature that can be detected by carefully trained sniffer dogs. MDD currently has several dogs in Covid training and Dr Guest comments that “The study is moving forwards very well and the signs are all really positive.” One dog in particular has shown a remarkable ability to detect the coronavirus odour, unfailingly pointing it out on each test.

After eight weeks in the laboratory during the first phase of training, the dogs will move on to use their newly learned skill in real-life situations. The charity, which has been working with the London School of Tropical Medicine and Durham University, ultimately hopes that the scheme can be expanded. The plan is to station dogs in places such as testing centres and airports, where they will be able to screen up to 250 people per hour. The secrets of the canine nose Dogs owe their extraordinary sense of smell to the complex structure inside their noses. Whereas a human has around five million scent receptors, dogs have over 300 million. Specialised bones in the dog’s nasal cavity create more space for these scent receptor cells, and the part of the brain that processes scents is particularly large in a dog. This gives them an incredible ability not just to pick out single odours, but to detect subtle differences within a complex group of scents. This ability, when combined with dogs’ intelligence and willingness to learn, makes them the best biosensors known to man. Clearly there is huge potential to develop this area of medicine and the results speak for themselves: dogs are able to pick out blood samples from people with cancer with almost 97 percent accuracy. Let’s hope that this fascinating field of research continues to receive the funding and support it so richly deserves. By Kate McLelland

Short Story Wash Day “How are you getting on with that new fella of yours?” Linda had just popped round for coffee at her best friend Debbie’s house. “Great thanks,” Debbie said, stuffing a basket-load of dirty laundry into the washing machine. “He’s coming round for a Valentine’s Day takeaway later, so I’d better get this lot washed, dried and pressed.” “Crikey, he’s not got you doing his washing already?” Linda spluttered. The basket was full of men’s Hawaiian shirts, white chinos and underwear. It all looked brand new and very expensive. “Can’t he do it himself?” “He’s just come out of hospital,” Debbie said. “So I offered to help.” “Why, what’s been wrong with him?” Linda frowned. “He was having a procedure; I didn’t like to ask.” Debbie mouthed the words, “Men’s business.” “So what’s all this, then?” Linda said, holding up a pair of Bermuda shorts. “He likes his designer labels doesn’t he?” “The clothes he had in hospital,” Debbie said. “Yes, he likes his fashion, spends a lot of money on it.” Linda spotted a pair of Lycra swimming trunks. “Are you telling me he wore those in hospital?” “He said they had the heating turned right up,” Debbie said. “Was like the tropics, he said.” Linda frowned. She suspected that her friend was being taken for a mug. It sounded more like this new boyfriend had been for a week away in the Mediterranean. “And whose is this?” She lifted out a shocking pink boob tube. “That’s mine,” Linda blushed and snatched the item from Linda. “I’ll hand wash that, don’t want to send the whole load pink.”

“And did you go and visit him in hospital?” Linda asked casually. “He told me not to. Didn’t want to worry me.” “I’ll bet.” Linda regarded her friend. Debbie had a big heart, and deserved to be happy, but some no-good bloke was taking her for a ride. The doorbell rang and Debbie jumped up to answer it. While she was gone Linda quickly opened the washing machine door, threw in the boob tube and switched the machine on. Let’s see how this charmer liked having all his designer gear turned pink. “Would you look at this!” Debbie returned with a bouquet of red roses. “Aren’t they beautiful?” “Stunning,” Linda remarked as she watched the washing machine quickly fill up with dark pink water. Debbie put the flowers on the draining board and opened a small envelope. “It says ‘Sorry I lied about being in hospital.’” “I knew it!” Linda slapped the table. Debbie looked up from the card, her eyes sparkling. “It says ‘I have a big surprise for you.’ I have to pack my bags because he’s just bought a villa in Spain and we’re flying out tonight.” She stooped to stop the washing machine. “I’d better change this to a quick wash or it’ll never get done in time.” “Ah yes,” Linda sipped her coffee sheepishly, “about that.” By Jackie Brewster

The Diary of a Local Mum Spending Time Together I heard someone recently saying their 2020 New Year’s resolution was to spend more time together as a family…they hardly dared to make a resolution for 2021 after that one totally surpassed everyone’s expectations! Be careful what you wish for, eh! Over this past year we’ve spent much more time at home than ever before, with the usually packed social schedules screeching to a resounding halt. This time has been challenging but in many ways enjoyable as we’ve had chance to slow down, be less ruled by the clock or calendar, and enjoy more time in each other’s company. This is precious time that we wouldn’t have otherwise been afforded and it’s given us chance to find simple pleasures. We’ve found ways to make fun, cheap, easy entertainment at home; we’ve exercised together, cooked together, eaten as a family, talked, played, danced and laughed. But, as we all know too well, this situation has continued far longer than we could have imagined whilst in the midst of the first lockdown in 2020. At first, it was a bit of a ‘project’ – entertaining everyone, creating new schedules to fit with work and school commitments, kicking off the day with PE with Joe and ending it with family board games or online quizzes. There was a certain novelty factor, helped by the glorious weather. I’ve no doubt that in the future, when we look back at 2020 with weary bemusement, we will find some positivity in the memories of the time when the world slowed down. However, over 10 months later we find ourselves still in a very similar situation. The quizzes have lost their appeal, board games are greeted with sighs, we’ve watched most of Netflix, no one ever wants to see another banana bread as long as they live … even Joe Wicks’ infectious energy is wearing a little thin (sorry Joe, I do love you but there’s only so many times you can get excited about a burpee, fancy dress or not). Keeping everyone entertained

is becoming increasingly difficult. ‘Another walk, anyone?’ I know that we shouldn’t complain. A little boredom is really nothing when compared to what others are going through. We’re incredibly grateful for our health and completely understand how vital it is to stay at home and do what we can to stay safe and protect others… but trying to remain upbeat and enthusiastic in this situation really is exhausting. We’re constantly bombarded with negativity from the media and, despite the promising news of the vaccine roll-out, it’s still difficult to envision an end to all this any time soon. To top it all off, it’s dark, cold and miserable outside. Slapping on a smile and finding something fun to do is hard. Time together now frequently involves everyone staring at individual screens…sometimes in the same room, sometimes not. But is that a bad thing? We often feel guilty for letting kids have too much screen time, or for being distracted by our own phones, but we’ve reached the point where we all just need some escapism. Spending time together as a family is great, but it’s possible to have too much of a good thing, right? Enforced enjoyment just isn’t fun! In this most unusual of situations, it’s time to take the pressure off. Don’t feel obliged to create entertainment, to make memories, take photos, capture moments, and fill the days with something positive when, in fact, we should probably be content to just ‘be’. Spending time together can be just that – sharing the hours and appreciating a bit of nothingness. Enjoy each other’s company in the simplest of ways and take pleasure in having a little space when you need it. Cherish the opportunity to sit and stare at screens together, knowing you’re all safe and healthy. The exciting times will return, one day.

Good vibrations

I wish the NapNap sleep mat had been around when my daughter was a baby. I may have fewer grey hairs and yawn-induced wrinkles. She was a bit of a nightmare sleeper. I don’t think she slept for more than a couple of hours at a time until after her first birthday; it was exhausting. The NapNap combines gentle vibrations with white noise to comfort and calm a baby. Basically, it’s designed to mimic a womb environment. You can use it in a cot or pram and it rolls up into a bag so is handy for travelling. You can also use it on the floor for tummy time (it might help to ease colic). There are six levels of vibration to choose from, including two that mimic a heartbeat. Quirky Britain

What Do Our National Animals Say about Us? Australia has the barn swallow, Belarus has the European bison, Canada has the beaver and, famously, China has the giant panda. Almost every country in the world has its national bird or beast, and some have more than one. In most cases, countries select their national animal or bird based on the creature’s characteristics. In order to qualify for ‘national’ status, the animal – whether a living thing or an imaginary beast – must share the same qualities, values and spirit as its home nation. England: the lion The lion symbolises courage, nobility, royalty, strength, stateliness and valour. Lions were first used as royal emblems by Danish Vikings and later by Saxon leaders. In the late twelfth century Plantagenet kings decided to use three lions on their heraldic shields and the symbol endures to this day, on coins, and, of course, on those iconic English football shirts. Scotland: the unicorn In Celtic mythology this fabled beast represents innocence and purity. It is also believed to be a symbol of masculinity and power, which is perhaps why it was favoured by Scottish kings. The unicorn first appeared on a Scottish royal coat of arms in the twelfth century reign of King William I, and when King James VI took over the English throne in 1603, he combined the unicorn with the English lion in a royal crest that is still used today. Wales: the dragon More of a heraldic beast than a living creature, Wales’ national animal is the ‘Red Dragon of Cadwaladr’. Legend has it that the magician Myrddin (or Merlin) prophesied an epic fight between the red dragon (representing the Welsh

people) and a white dragon (representing the English). Northern Ireland: centaur or elk? Wikipedia lists Northern Ireland’s national animal as a centaur, although there’s no explanation as to why this mythical half-man, half-horse was chosen to represent the six counties of Northern Ireland. A 1924 coat of arms showed a red lion (for the Ulster Scots) standing opposite an Irish elk (representing what officials of the time jarringly referred to as ‘the native element’). Unsurprisingly, this highly controversial badge is no longer used. Spirited symbol: the bulldog While the bulldog doesn’t carry the same official weight as the lion, unicorn or dragon, it would probably win any poll in which voters were asked which creature best represented the nation’s character. Despite being famously used in WW2 propaganda, the well-known expression ‘British Bulldog Spirit’ actually dates from the eighteenth century, when bulldogs developed a fearsome reputation as fighting dogs in the popular sport of bull-baiting. The British may be great animal lovers but it’s clear that we don’t let our hearts rule our heads when picking creatures to represent our nation. Those animals are not chosen for their fluffy, endearing qualities but for their strength, endurance and power. They have stood us in good stead for many hundreds of years and will doubtless continue to represent our nation well into the future. By Kate McLelland

Local History William Strutt’s House

Writing about his tour throughout the United Kingdom in 1829, Sir Richard Philips described his visit to the home of William Strutt, industrialist, engineer, inventor. “The house of Mr. William Strutt is one of the handsomest mansions in Derby [St Helen’s House built in 1766-7 by Joseph Pickford for John Gisbourne], and surrounded by a fine park of eighty acres, adjoining one side of the town. This gentleman is President of the Derby Philosophical Society and was the personal friend of Darwin, Wright, and Arkwright. It is impossible to imagine a more urbane, kind, and intelligent man. The house of Mr. W. Strutt is a school of experiment and a triumph of science over the stubbornness of nature. The first thing that strikes a visitor, is the uniform temperature, for by the skill of Mr. Strutt, it is never below fifty-five degrees, and this is effected by the ingenious distribution of hot air. The kitchen is a triumph of art. An open grate, is adapted with economical appropriations which render it capable of roasting with access of air, of steaming, heating, &c.. The stoves give heat to an extended surface, and prepare, with slight fuel, many stews, &c. There is also a steam engine, of a one-horse power, for washing, mangling, pressing, drying, all conducted with unparalleled ingenuity to effect their surprising and often complicated purposes. A small steam-boiler places hot water over cold, and there is always hot water for culinary purposes, while the same boiler heats a noble bath, which is a frequent source of enjoyment to Mr. Strutt. Thus steam, gas, heat, hot air, philosophy and mechanics, are all brought to bear on these premises, on every branch of domestic economy. In the library is a set of instruments for all kinds of meteorological observations, and on the table a clock of the most simple and original movements, invented by Mr. Strutt. The pendulum, springs and escapement, are constructed like other clocks, but the movements of the hands are altogether new, and produced by only three wheels.

But the triumph of mechanics and science is displayed in the hot houses. Here Mr. Strutt has combined a pinery and grapery in the shape of a quadrant, from West to East. The elevation is also the quarter of a circle; its radius is above twenty feet, and the form of the lights is in the periphery of the quadrant; the rows of lights, instead of being flat, project in an angle of about 100˚, fitted into lead frames, so as to be nearly air and water tight. The sun’s light is therefore equal through the day. The temperature is adjusted by air holes amid various balances, such as alone could present themselves to so practised an experimentalist. The pines thrive as well in the open ground, as in pots, owing to the steam being allowed to percolate the earth. The lights are framed in cast iron, and stages work round the glass both outside and inside, giving easy access to every part. In a word, Mr. Strutt’s hot-house is the most perfect in this country, and for mechanical perfection, perhaps, without equal in any country. I never before saw so many clever and original contrivances, mostly his own, as I beheld in these hothouses, as well as in other domestic machinery on his premise; while the modesty, with which he admitted the originality of his inventions, was at once affecting and delightful. In short, a full history of Mr. Strutt’s house and grounds would be a synopsis of mechanics, domestic economy, and horticulture, and would fill a volume, instead of a page or two.” It would be interesting to know what the domestic staff and Mrs Strutt thought! Upbeat We are now several weeks into Operation Derbyshire – an initiative to share with our communities the excellent work that is going on to tackle certain crime types in the county and support victims. At the end of last year, Derbyshire welcomed a new Chief Constable, Rachel Swann, and she and Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa have worked together to set these crime types as their priorities. We recognise that many crimes have a devastating effect on the victim and those close to them. There are so many crimes that have an impact, but that may not always be in the spotlight – these will be the focus for this operation.

Chief Constable Swann said: “Focusing on delivering a high-quality service to the public is at the core of everything we do at Derbyshire Constabulary. “We do this by fighting crime, proactively bringing offenders to justice and protecting the most vulnerable from harm.” Mr Dhindsa said: “We really want our communities to know that we focus on long-term problem solving, engaging, listening and responding. We then need to ensure that we let the public know what we’ve done – this is a really important part.”

The operation will highlight what we are doing to reduce speeding, tackle wildlife, heritage and rural crime and target community crimes like anti-social behaviour.

Bereavement Matters After the upheaval of last year we, like everybody, are looking forward to being able to have the freedom to do what we like in 2021 without fear of unwittingly adding to the biggest pandemic for 100 years. Those freedoms make for quite a long list, but at the top is the simplest and most natural wish of all – the wish to go about our jobs in a human, and humane, manner. None of us expect our industry to go back to normal after the past 12 months, when at one stage we couldn’t drive our hearses, sing hymns in church, have more than 10 mourners at a funeral or even let people touch the coffin as they left the crematorium. I have spoken before about how heart-breaking those times were, but I’ve also spoken of how, even in the toughest times, people drew comfort from the simple things, and often the small group of mourners helped to focus on the emotion and remembrance that can sometimes get lost in the more elaborate funeral arrangements.

But what couldn’t be replaced is the instinctive need for us to reach out, to shake someone’s hand or give them a bit of a hug, because contact wasn’t allowed. That was hard because it’s the most natural thing in the world, and to withhold human contact felt unkind and harsh, so I’m looking forward to being able to reach out again. I’m also looking forward to wakes returning, because so often these are where the real goodbyes are sent. Humans are at their best when they’re relaxed in company of others, when they can loosen their ties or slip off their formal shoes, and chat, laugh and reminisce. The day a funeral can again bear witness to both the sadness of tears at the service and the sound of laughter at the wake – with plenty of hugs and handshakes – is the day we know that the world as we know it is back to normal.
