WELCOME LETTER
Hello readers
Welcome to a very special 100th issue of All Things Local! We’re thrilled to be celebrating this amazing milestone and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s supported our independent community magazine over the years – whether you’re a reader, advertiser, one of our many talented contributors, someone who’s used ATL to find local businesses, or all of the above! You’ve played a part in helping us to achieve this and we’re incredibly grateful. Here’s to the next 100 issues! We’re into a new year and it’s always a time of excitement as we look ahead to what 2024 may bring. While the cold weather is likely to stick around for a little longer yet, it won’t be long before spring arrives in all its glorious technicolour, bringing with it the promise of warmer temperatures and brighter days. Remember, the clocks ‘spring forward’ an hour on Sunday 31st March so don’t forget to change yours and enjoy that extra hour of daylight in the evening. And, of course, 2024 is a leap year so we benefit from an extra day in February, too! How will you spend your ‘bonus’ day this year? Anyone who was born on February 29th will be able to celebrate their birthday on its rightful day, an opportunity that only comes around once every 4 years. There’s also a tradition, according to legend dating back to the 5th century, that ‘allows’ women to propose to men on February 29th … while it’s now commonplace for women to take the lead in proposals at any time of year, many enjoy the history of the tradition and choose to ‘pop the question’ on leap day. On the subject of romance, Valentine’s Day is on 14th February and, on Sunday 10th March, it’s time to say ‘thank you’ to Mum, on Mother’s Day. If you’re planning on spoiling your loved one or your mother on either of these dates, remember to book early for restaurants or flowers to avoid disappointment as many of our wonderful local eateries and florists will be incredibly busy!
So, what else does 2024 have in store? Well, it’s also an Olympic year and all eyes will be on Paris in July and August as teams of athletes from all over the world compete for those coveted medals. We’ll be cheering on Team GB as they compete in a vast range of sporting events, hoping to equal or beat their incredible 4th place finish in the medal table at the Tokyo Olympics. Prior to the Olympics is the Euro 2024 football championship, held in Germany in June. The England men’s team will be attempting to emulate the women’s incredible 2022 Euros success … fingers crossed they’ll be bringing it home! Before all of that, you’ve got a chance to do some winning of your own. We can’t offer you a trophy or a medal, but you could be in with the chance of winning a 2-course Sunday lunch for 2, courtesy of The Kedleston Country House in our Prize Crossword on page 6 or a bottle of Champagne in our Champagne Sudoku quiz on page 24. Get your entries in by 14th February to be in the draw. We hope you enjoy our 100th edition and we’ll be back in a couple of months with our 101st! All the best, Team ATL

Playful Pandas Don’t forget National Panda Day on March the 16th. A special day dedicated to these monochrome creatures. My daughter is a devoted panda enthusiast. Well, it’s her second favourite animal after the tiger. She has a large collection of pandas and each one is – very creatively – named Panda. Apart from one who is much larger than the others. That’s called Big Panda, obviously. Here are some facts about these gentle giants that you might not have come across before: • Pandas are practically vegetarian (that’s because of all the bamboo they eat of course) but every now and then, they might snack on a tasty passing rodent. • Due to their bamboo-heavy diet, giant pandas generate a hefty amount of poop, equivalent in weight to that of a small child each day. • The giant panda’s scientific name is Ailuropoda melanoleuca, which actually means black and white cat-foot. • Newborn panda cubs only weigh 100 grams making them susceptible to being accidentally squashed. • Pandas are so popular that in the 1980s a Taiwanese zoo painted a sun bear to mimic a giant panda. • The collective noun for pandas surprisingly isn’t a cuddle (which would be much better of course). Instead, it’s an embarrassment. • Giant pandas have been around for almost 20 million years making them the longest living species of bear in the world.

• Their adorable chubby cheeks are actually made of pure muscle giving them a stronger bite than a lion or a tiger. • They have 6 fingers. The extra digit acts like a thumb that helps them roll the bamboo into cigar shapes for more efficient eating. Currently, there are only a few thousand giant pandas left in the wild and in captivity. The good news is that they are no longer listed as endangered. So, on March 16th, let’s celebrate National Panda Day. To experience life as a panda, you could adopt their daily routine of extensive eating and sleeping. They are also very solitary creatures preferring their own space. I could definitely get on board with the panda lifestyle – but I’m not sure about eating all that bamboo.

Just a Thought... Trust You!
What is trust? A lot of the definitions I have come across have two main facets in common, that trust is a firm belief in the reliability and abilities of someone or something. So far, so simple. We are often acutely aware of those in our lives that we do not trust, those that we have been let down or hurt by – often repeatedly. Hopefully we are just as aware of those in our lives that we DO trust. Those fabulous folk that we know beyond doubt will be there, show up and support us when and how we need them. With me so far? What then of our trust of ourselves? Now that is less clear cut. I feel that we have lost trust in our own decision making. The why and the how of it is largely, I would argue, down to the fact that we lead such hectic lives and live in an almost permanent state of overwhelm. In turn, this leads to a decision paralysis and so we outsource the decision making. Of course,
Codesign Coaching with Fliss After finding herself critically ill in hospital in 2022 as a result of chronic ill health battles combined with PTSD from a personal trauma, Fliss Goldsmith told herself she still had a lot more to do in life … there and then she decided to become a Life Coach, to help ensure other people didn’t fall as far down the spiral as she had. She studied for 15 months with the Oxbridge Qualification Board covering everything from human psychology and questioning styles, to thought patterns and neuroplasticity – an area she found particularly fascinating. “The idea that our brains can literally rewire themselves by changing our beliefs, actions and intent is wildly wonderful to me!” Fliss explains the beauty of Life Coaching is that it can help anyone: “If you are alive, you can benefit. I think in the UK we find the idea of Life Coaching a bit ‘extra’ whereas in the US they have been onto this for years – people have coaches as easily as having a hairdresser. It’s very bespoke and the benefits are unending, but can include: increased confidence, improved emotional and mental wellness, better selfawareness, less stress, more quality sleep, more meaningful relationships, less overwhelm and more clarity. The aim is to
the world of commerce has leapt on this with several sterling ideas: apps to tell us what to eat and when, gadgets that can decide what music we listen to, algorithms that make choices about what we would like to buy (even though we never knew we needed it!). If we took a step back, zoomed out from all the clutter and noise – we DO actually know what is good for us, what is right and what is required, most of the time. We are fallible, that’s being human – but if we learn from our mistakes this only strengthens our trust in our innate ability to make good choices. I urge you to start to look at your own relationship with self-trust and get really curious as to where you are on the scale. With the right small, incremental changes you can get back to connecting with your decisiveness and the benefits to your mood and health are very positive. Have a think – you’re willing to give it a try, I trust?
By Fliss Goldsmith of Belper live life optimally – whatever that looks like for you.” There’s no such thing as a typical coaching session. Fliss emphasises that her role is not to tell people what to do, but support them on a personal adventure to a goal that’s worked out together. “I enable you to dig into who you are, why you do the things you do, what you feel and probably most importantly what your values are and the changes you need to make in your life to protect them with clear and kind boundaries.” Fliss works with clients locally and nationally, either in her Codesign Cabin in Belper, over Zoom or even by email/ messenger. Codesign is a certified LGBTQIA+ Safe Space (by Industry Leader Proud Wellness), free from prejudice or judgement. Cats Cost Owning a cat is a source of happiness and fun, but if you are thinking of getting one you need to be conscious of how much time and money you will need to spend to keep your little friend. Money The Blue Cross pet charity advises that, aside from the initial cost of a cat and the paraphernalia you’ll need to settle them in, these are the ongoing costs to be aware of: • Cat food • Cat litter • Toys • Annual check-ups • Vaccinations • Flea and worm treatment • Cat insurance • Ill health or emergency vet treatment Time Any domesticated cat will need your company, and this you will give willingly as it’s the very reason you wanted

a pet in the first place. But a quick stroke on the head before you leave the house for the day is not enough. You’ll need to allow time to: • Play with your cat, particularly an active kitten • Regularly clean their litter tray, food and water bowls • Groom them – in particular, long-haired breeds need to be groomed daily • Work with any behavioural issues, remembering this won’t be fixed overnight • Take time off work at short notice to deal with health problems and vet visits • Arrange care if you are away from home for more than a few hours If you still really want a cat, but the drawbacks are putting you off, consider getting an older animal. Young kittens can’t be left alone for a whole day so an older cat might be a better choice.

Short Story A Choice of Kevins “So all Darren told you was that his name’s Kevin?” Jenny calmly admired herself in a shop window. “And he was at school with us?” “Yes, and that he couldn’t wait to see you again,” Donna repeated. “You look great in that colour Jenny, really glamorous.” “I know.” Jenny pouted. “But you’d better not have dragged me out for no reason.” “We’ll have a laugh,” Donna said. “Have a few drinks, reminisce about old times, just you, me, Darren and this Kevin.” “Yes, but which Kevin, Donna?” Jennifer frowned and reapplied her lipstick. “There must have been about a million Kevins in our year.” In reality, there had been four Kevins, three Donnas (two of which unhelpfully had the same surname), and two Jennifers – Cool Jenny and Swotty Jenny – and she knew which one she was. It had been twenty years since they poured out of the school hall, into the bright sunlight, after their last exam, but she still looked back on that time as the best years of her life. She’d loved school and had ruled the roost. “Do you remember that Clingy Kevin?” Donna laughed, walking on. “How every breaktime he would follow us around like a lost puppy singing Love Me Tender?” “Urgh!” Jenny shivered. “It had better not be him. I’m never speaking to you again if it’s him.” “I heard he got married in Vegas.” Donna checked her watch, they were right on time. “Wife’s expecting twins.” “Good for him,” Jennifer yawned dismissively, checking her manicure. “And what about Kanga Kev?” Donna giggled. “Remember when he turned up for PE in a home-made costume, and got detention for refusing to get off the trampoline?” “If anyone’s wearing a kangaroo suit at the pub,” Jenny huffed, “I’m going straight home.” “He loved his pouch didn’t he? I heard he works for the council now.” Donna chuckled. “And what about that Kevin who was Captain Hook in the school play and fell off the stage?”
“He went off to work on the cruise ships.” Jennifer raised one eyebrow. “Clearly he didn’t learn his lesson.” “That only leaves that gorgeous Kevin Cooper, doesn’t it?” Donna said as they turned into the pub car park. “I heard on the grapevine that he was back in town.” Jennifer knew for a fact that he was because she’d done her research. It was the only reason she’d come out that night. He’d dated lots of girls in school, so handsome with his blond hair and wet look gel, but bizarrely never once asked her out. She reassured herself that he probably had a secret crush on her all along but thought she was out of his league. It wouldn’t surprise her if he’d been carrying a torch for her all these years. He’d better prepare himself to be wowed now. Between all the tables and umbrellas laid out in the beer garden, she spotted Darren putting down a tray of drinks, with another man who looked over at her expectantly. She would know that blond hair anywhere. “Kevin Cooper!” Donna laughed as they approached the table. “We were just trying to work out which Kevin you’d be!” He seemed taken aback – perhaps he’s disappointed that I’ve not come alone thought Jenny. She smoothed down the dress she could barely breathe in, reminded herself that she was Cool Jenny and it was his job to impress her. “You remember Jenny from school?” Darren said, making introductions. “I think I remember you.” Kevin scratched his head and glanced sheepishly at Darren. “It’s a bit embarrassing, but I was expecting the other Jenny.” By Jackie Brewster

Beer: Hop Water Introducing ‘Hop Water’: a refreshing, non-alcoholic fusion of hops and water. Breweries are seizing the opportunity to diversify their non-alcoholic offerings due to the straightforward and rapid production process of hop water. In contrast to traditional non-alcoholic beers, some companies prefer not to categorise hop water within this genre. Crafting a non-alcoholic beer typically involves alcohol removal or halting the fermentation process, often resulting in a diluted or incomplete flavour profile. Hop water, however, provides a distinctive alternative by delivering a complete and robust taste without the presence of alcohol. The end result is a beverage that showcases the essence of hops, offering a full-bodied flavour and occasionally mimicking the effervescence of seltzer. Breweries are embracing hop water as a creative avenue to cater to those seeking a non-alcoholic option that transcends the limitations often associated with traditional non-alcoholic beers. Abbeydale – Sparking Hop Water Contains the finest Yorkshire water, infused with Mosaic Hops and lightly carbonated.
Word on Wine
Hopefully, spring should be starting to appear when you read this. However, knowing the British weather, we could still be under a blanket of snow. So, I thought we should have another look at Cabernet Sauvignon and another great wine from California, USA (not Derby!). Cabernet Sauvignon is a well-known grape variety which likes warm, dry conditions to produce the distinctive characteristics that make it easily recognised from its dark pink berries. Cabernet Sauvignon was well established in the 17th century where it was thought to be a grape known as ‘Bidure’, a descendant of a Roman vine ‘Bitiuria’. However, in 1997, DNA testing found it to be a cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, possibly being created as the two grape vines were grown side by side. This may explain the aromas and flavours of Cabernet Sauvignon being similar to its two parents. A wine that shows all the characteristics of Cabernet Sauvignon is the Chronic Cellars ‘Sir Real’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, from Majestic Wines. Josh and Jake Beckett worked for many years washing barrels and on bottling lines in various Californian wineries, forming lifelong connections to the local growers. They started the winery in 2004 in Paso Robles on the Mission Trail in the Central Coast region, about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, with 2 tonnes of the best (‘Chronic’) grapes they could find to produce a wine of character. Today they have a working relationship with the local vineyards, which

Fitness Matters
activity is optional! Movement is natural and essential. Consistency is key, little and often; over time this becomes part of your everyday life.
More Than a New Year’s Resolution…
Like many people, you may have declared that this year will be ‘the one’ for fitness and weight-loss, starting off in January all guns blazing, with a goal and high motivation? By February motivation may have slipped and by March it has left the building… Why do people quit? Often people fall prey to advertisements promising instant results for the least amount of effort. Social media advertises weight loss in 4/8/12 weeks, but really lifestyle changes are what’s needed. Change your mindset; don’t look at it as a short-term fix, this kind of thinking traps us with shortcuts that lead nowhere. Have you ever followed a diet or a fitness program, only to regain all the weight plus extra after you stop? Often, they’re too restrictive and don’t educate you on long-term choices, so you soon revert back to your old ways and undo all the hard work. The benefits of good health are enjoyed for life. Eating, breathing and moving all have vital functions for the wellbeing of the body. Nobody talks about stopping food or air intake but despite that, some of us think that physical
How to succeed where others fail: Commit to training days and build up to 30 minutes of movement on those days. Don’t start by hitting the gym 4-6 times per week as this isn’t sustainable. Begin with 3 times a week, maybe increasing to 4 after a few weeks if that’s manageable. Learn to pace yourself and scale up or down according to your abilities, challenging yourself on a regular basis. Break it down into small goals. Try functional fitness for two months and see how much stronger your body feels. Push past the difficult first two days. Try to add two more reps to that workout. Soon you won’t have to think ‘Can I do that?’ – you’ll just be able to do it! Improved fitness brings other benefits like better sleep, food choices, posture and mobility. You’ll find you can apply yourself more – not just to workouts but to every area of life. Functional fitness is a lifetime commitment to continuously benefit from your fittest self. So, put on your training gear and begin to move! By Alex Robinson Level 4 Personal Trainer with additional qualifications in GP referrals – Pre- & post-natal exercise. Motoring Top Tips for Buying a Used Car It’s no secret that new car prices, like most things, have rocketed in recent years and, according to Auto Trader, the average new car cost is around £40,000. The used car market is therefore appealing to many, but buyers should be wary. Here are some top tips to help you buy a great used car. Check the car’s history beforehand It’s easy to check a car’s history before you’ve even seen it. The government’s online MOT history checker lets you enter the registration plate and access the vehicle’s previous MOT records. Look at the latest MOT and ask the seller if any advisories have been fixed since. If not, work repair costs into your negotiation. Avoid vehicles with a history of MOT failures and advisories, which suggests years of neglect. Make sure the MOT mileage aligns with the odometer – if the current mileage is lower than the last MOT, it might have been clocked. Carry out an online history check before purchase, which can tell you if the vehicle has ever been written off, scrapped or has any finance outstanding. Be aware of scams Con artists set up websites that look genuine, often replicating a real business, but the cars are usually offered at suspiciously cheap prices. They usually con people by asking them to send a deposit over the phone or online. Only send or hand over money when you’ve seen the vehicle at the dealer’s premises.
Make sure the V5C registration document is present and in the name of the person selling the vehicle (if buying privately). Check the vehicle identification number (VIN) is the same on the V5C document as it is on the car too. Payment Set yourself a strict budget and think about how you’re going to pay for the car. It’s best to buy outright because good finance deals are harder to obtain on an older vehicle. You have far more protection if you use a credit card. If buying outright isn’t an option, then consider taking out a traditional bank loan. This means that you technically own the car outright to begin with. Just make sure you can afford the monthly repayments. Photo credit: Blackball Media
Win a bottle of Champagne courtesy of All Things Local!
The test drive Test driving the car is a must, and if a seller makes up excuses for not letting you do so, stay clear. Use the test drive to check nothing is wrong with the vehicle, as well as to check you like it. Listen out for any knocks, bangs or rattles, especially when braking and cornering. Make sure that gearshifts are smooth, as gearboxes can quite often be problematic. Check that other features work, including air conditioning, heated seats and cruise control. The paperwork Ideally, you want a vehicle pack to be present, including the manuals and a stamped service book, but it’s the receipts that are essential, as these are much harder to manipulate. Look out for the dates of parts such as timing belts/cambelts, as these usually need changing every five or so years, and it’s one of the more expensive maintenance jobs.

You may have been involved in an accident, scuffed your alloys on a kerb, reversed into a wall, caught your bumper on a post, skidded on the ice and had a bump, been hit by someone’s trolley in the supermarket car park … there are so many ways to cause minor damage to your car. Fortunately, no matter what has happened to your vehicle, Chips Away can provide the solution, from roofs to panels, bonnets to bumpers, filling and priming to painting and polishing. “As long as it’s not too badly damaged, the majority of things are fixable to the point where you wouldn’t notice
anything’s happened!” says Darren. “In every case, we always try hard to help people out by finding the best, most cost-effective solution. We never judge – we’ve been in this business so long that we understand that accidents happen and we’ve seen it all before – we’re only interested in sorting it out for you!” Their many reviews demonstrate that Darren and Keith are true to their word, with customers commenting on the value for money that Chips Away offer, as well as the quality of their work. Based on Goods Road, Belper, they provide a one-stop shop for bodywork and alloy repairs, so if you’ve got an issue that you’d like repairing, give them a call on 01773 689596 for a no-obligation quote. They can also provide a courtesy car, or pick-up and drop-off, if required, to ensure your minor accident doesn’t end up being a major inconvenience!

Dear Sir / Madam,
Re: Would you like to sell your house this month? Hi, my name is Amanda. I am a local property investor. I am buying properties in your area as I am regularly asked by tenants for properties in this area. The differences between selling your house to me and using an estate agent:
• There are no “viewings” - with lots of people visiting your home, invading your privacy • I specialise in buying properties very quickly, around 28 days is my normal purchase period • I can buy with cash so that you don’t get messed around by mortgage lenders slowing things down • I pay all your estate agent and solicitor fees - the price I pay is actually what you get • There is no board outside or advert in the paper, just a fast, smooth, relaxed confidential sale • Find out more visit www.wedoproperty.co.uk
Call me for a guaranteed offer on your property. If you accept my offer before the end of the month then I will either give you £250 cash in advance or pay your mortgage for you until we complete the purchase of your property! This could get the mortgage company off your back immediately! If you would like to sell your house quickly? If you are keen to sell within a month with no hassle from agents charging you fees, viewings that waste your time and buyers offering and then backing out, then I can definitely help. I offer a guaranteed purchase of any property which means that all you have to do is give me a call and I’ll give you a price that I guarantee to buy your property at. If you decide to sell to me you could have the money in your account within a month. If you want to sell quickly then give me a call today 01332 289572 I’ll look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Amanda Amanda Doyle, Ethical, Local Property Investor
Quote the code below when you call and I will pay you £250 cash in advance if you decide to sell ATL250
P.S. Call me on 01332 289572 TODAY and have the money for your property in your bank account in only 28 days! P.P.S. Homes & Gardens
Gardening Myths or Magic? Gardening tips have been handed down for generations, but times move on, and opinions, fashions and practices can change. How do you know which guidance is wise? 1. Washing-up liquid is a great way to kill aphids When used in the kitchen, it dissolves greasy oils and fats so that they can easily be washed away. However, scientists distinguish between soap and detergents. Soaps are made from natural oils and fats, whereas detergents can often include phosphates, bleach, various enzymes, dyes and fragrances. The surfactants, as they are called, are synthetic chemicals. Does it work? Spraying plant pests with a weak solution of washing-up liquid does tend to work. It probably washes off the waxy coating of the bug, making it vulnerable to drying out and dying. Some soap mixtures affect the nervous system too. What effect will these dead bugs have on wildlife that might consume them? This is not known. It’s a good idea to spray the plants with clean water shortly after using the washing-up liquid. Does it harm plants? Detergents containing surfactants do present a real risk of harm to plants, known as phytotoxicity. Some plants are more sensitive than others, particularly sweet peas, cherries, plums, hawthorns and tomatoes. It can remove the protective natural oils and waxy surface from the leaves, thus reducing the plant’s defence against disease and more pests. So, is washing-up liquid to combat pests a myth or a magical solution? It all depends on the type of soap solution you use. It can be magic, especially if you rinse them all in plain water afterwards.
2. The application of fertiliser kills bacteria in the soil Organic gardening in tune with nature is undoubtedly best, if at all possible. However, is it true that artificial fertiliser damages soil microbes? It appears not. Bacteria absorb nutrients in fertiliser, and this helps them to multiply. The only exception seems to be when synthetic fertilisers are applied in very large amounts, which creates toxins. The most significant difference between synthetic and organic fertilisers is the time they take to release their nutrients. Chemical fertiliser releases nutrients as soon as it dissolves in water, whereas organic matter releases them very slowly. 3. Digging is good for the soil Digging and double-digging is something that many of our ancestors would have done. It’s a great way to get rid of weeds, incorporate organic matter into the soil, increase air pockets and help with drainage in compacted areas. Right? Maybe not if we take the advice of today’s gardening experts and soil scientists. Not only is digging hard work, but it is generally thought to do more harm than good. It can quickly destroy the network of earthworm tunnels that provide air to roots, sever beneficial threads of fungus that work in harmony with plants, and disrupt the ecosystem beneath the surface. It can also stimulate microbes that release greenhouse gases into the air. Instead, apply organic mulch to the surface, which will deter weeds and allow earthworms to take it into the soil. Dig when you need to plant something new. Your back will thank you! 4. If a plant looks unhealthy, give it a feed Kindness can kill! If a garden plant looks sick, the worst thing you can do is give it a dose of general fertiliser. This can stress the plant as it tries to put on more growth. Instead, look for the cause of the problem. It might simply have dry roots, in which case it can be watered thoroughly, or the pH levels of the soil might be wrong, leading to certain deficiencies. Get to know your plants and give them what they need rather than what you think they want. By Caroline Knight

Children & Education
The Diary of a Local Mum
Giving Up on Giving Up I didn’t grow up in a particularly religious household, but nonetheless, every year we gave something up for Lent. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and continues for the 40 days and 40 nights up to Holy Thursday, before Good Friday. It’s a religious observation but, as I say, that was never really our reason for doing it when I was younger, it was more just an opportunity to try going without something. A test of willpower, really! I recall the decision over what to give up for Lent seemed like a very, very important choice each year. Slightly missing the point, I’d try to find something that I could happily go without – such as Brussels sprouts, or the obligatory parsnip that my dad always made me try with my Sunday dinner (I still hate parsnips now!). Strangely enough, these ideas were always vetoed and I usually ended up attempting to abstain from eating chocolate, sweets or biscuits (only to then gorge myself on them at Easter!). 40 days is a long time, especially when you’re a child, but I do still remember the challenge feeling easier as it progressed. It was always the first few days that were hardest and I definitely learnt lessons from the experience. To be honest, I’d forgotten all about this tradition until recently and it’s not something I’ve ever done with my kids, so when I ventured the idea of giving up something for 40 days you can imagine it was met with a distinct lack of enthusiasm. ‘But what would we give up?’ I was asked. Well, the obvious one that sprang to mind was mobile phones but that would be like asking two teens to give up oxygen or water. It’s just not going to happen. Likewise, social media – it’s such an essential part of daily life nowadays, used for regular communication, so the implications of being offline for such a long
60 60
period of time would be too much to consider! Chocolate, fast food, or online shopping were all options … but then I started to think about not giving something up, but committing to something instead. What if the focus was on doing, rather than doing without? I’ve noticed that in this fast-paced, electronically charged world, young people’s attention span is becoming alarmingly short. Even if we’re watching a film together, they’ve got one eye on their phones as they mindlessly scroll. Kids (and many adults too), live in a constantly distracted state as devices demand attention. On social media, pictures and videos have a very short window in which to pique their interest before they scroll on by. Even those that they do like get a quick double tap before they move swiftly on to the next one. Information or entertainment comes in short 3 second bursts. Rarely do they read to the end of a long post or watch a video in full. So, rather than giving up something, the challenge would be to fully focus time and effort on something instead, such as reading a book or a daily newspaper (an actual paper one – not online!), writing a poem or diary each day, drawing a picture or doing some mindful colouring. In short, having some time away from distractions to be fully immersed in something that doesn’t require charging! Do you think you could do it? Could your kids do it? It certainly won’t be easy, but this Lent I’m going to give up on giving up, and fully commit to doing something for 40 days instead. Now, to persuade the kids to join me in this challenge…! Hmm.

Local History
Tragedy at Hartshay Colliery Ernest Williams and Gladys May Hopkinson Today there are few traces of the coal mines around Belper which were worked over the last couple of centuries. It is not easy to find out where the collieries were and how they operated but there are some records of the men who worked them. Hartshay Colliery was situated in an area heavily mined in the nineteenth century to the north east of Heage, bounded by Chesterfield Road and Ripley Road. Owned by the Butterley Company, it offered employment to many local men. Coal was mined and transported on a network of tram lines down to the Cromford Canal at the strangely-named Starvehimvalley. Looking through the newspaper archives I was surprised to learn that between 1869 and 1930 there were at least fifteen deaths and as many serious injuries at Hartshay. Miners worked in the dark and conditions were often wet and cramped. Causes of deaths were roof falls, lifts breaking or props collapsing and some accidents were due to falls of coal or involved underground rail lines and trucks. In Belper Cemetery I found the graves of two men killed at Hartshay, and I suspect there may be more.
Fatalities were not uncommon and this made me think that health and safety was not seen as particularly important. It was not until legislation in 1911 when mines’ rescue stations were set up in an attempt to remedy the situation, with equipment and trained staff to deal with emergencies. The story of Ernest Williams is a sad one. Born in Heage in 1899, Ernest grew up in Sawmills in a family of eight children whose parents came to Derbyshire from Birmingham. Ernest had worked as a miner since the age of about 14. He and Gladys Hopkinson married at St Peter’s Church in 1920, soon moved into a house on Spencer Road and their son Ernest was born the following year. Tragedy struck the family in 1925 when one morning Ernest was working underground, laying sleepers for the coal trucks. The Ripley & Heanor News reported that tons of shale fell and buried him. On inspection, colliery officials declared that the props were stable and undamaged and they could not account for the accident. The coroner returned a verdict of accidental death. Ernest’s death must have caused unimaginable distress to Gladys and I did not find any record of compensation to his widow. Among tributes paid to him, colleagues said that he was one of the best workmen, always attending to his work and doing his duty. I don’t know how Gladys survived after the death of her husband but she probably relied on her family living close by. In 1929 she re-married a widower, William Bert Needham, and the following year their son William Bertie was born. The family moved to Shardlow to open a bakery and grocery shop. Hartshay Colliery closed in the 1930s, to the consternation of local people, but it soon re-opened and was given a new lease of life as a training centre for “Bevin Boys” who worked the coal mines during the war. The remaining coal was dug out by opencast mining in the 1970s before the construction of the A38. Nothing now remains except a small building near the busy dual carriageway.
The inscription reads: I left home in perfect health and little thought of death so nigh but God thought fit to call me hence and with his wish I must comply

Rachael Collins from Fleur Florist
All Things Local has joined forces with Rachael Collins (pictured) from Fleur Florist of King Street, Belper to offer readers the chance to show their appreciation for a fellow member of the community. The recipient of this issue’s bouquet is Sheila Randall from Morley. She was nominated by her friend Vanessa Tissington also from Morley. Here’s what Vanessa wrote: “I am delighted to nominate Miss Sheila Randall, my dear friend - and a dear friend to all in the community and parish of Morley. Sheila has a heart of gold and the level of energy that those half her age would envy! For many years, Sheila has devoted herself to others: friends, family and to her parish and community. Despite a tough patch, Sheila will, I feel certain, return to enriching the lives of us all. Your flowers will show Sheila that we love, care and value her - more than we can say. I hope that you will agree that Sheila truly does deserve to receive the beautiful flowers. With my best wishes.” Vanessa Tissington Nominate someone to receive the next bouquet. All you have to do is state, in no more than 100 words, who you are nominating. Include their address and the reasons why you are nominating them. You can nominate more than one person if they are living/ working at the same address… and remember, flowers don’t just have to be for women! The only rule is that the person receiving the flowers must live or work in the distribution area of All Things Local Village Edition (listed on front cover). Just write your nomination on a piece of paper and send to Friendship Blooms, All Things Local, 74 Woodhouse Road, Kilburn, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 0NA or e-mail your nomination to karyn@allthingslocal.co.uk putting ‘Friendship Blooms’ as the subject. Please include your full name, address and daytime telephone number on your nomination.

Upbeat: Getting out and about in the New Year We’re lucky to have some of the best walks and hikes in Britain right here on our doorsteps in Derbyshire. However, do you know how you’d explain where you were if you needed help from the emergency services on a rural country lane – or wanted to report something you’d witnessed when out in the Peaks? We often receive calls from people who don’t know exactly where they are or struggle to describe the location of an incident. Describing exactly where help is needed can be challenging and stressful – particularly in unfamiliar or unaddressed areas. What3words makes it easy to communicate precise locations. It divides the world into a grid of three metre squares and has given each square a unique combination of three random words: a what3words address. For example, if you’re on Mam Tor it’s ///custodian.really. prestige and if you’re crossing Paine’s Bridge at Chatsworth it’s ///note.atlas.split.
The app is free to download for both iOS and Android devices, and works offline, making it ideal for use in areas with unreliable data connection, such as national parks and campsites. So, download it now so it’s there when you need it. If you spot something illegal or suspicious when you’re out and about, and it’s a non-emergency, you can report it online on our website: www.derbyshire.police.uk • Take photographs if you can, the surroundings and any landmarks will help officers relocate the crime scene • Use a coin or notebook for scale if you’re photographing an object, but don’t disturb anything • Note the location as accurately as possible by grid reference, GPS, or what3words • Note a description of any suspects and any vehicle numbers • Note the time and date and what happened Remember, if the crime or suspected crime is taking place right now, call 999.

Bereavement Matters Community is always a big part of life at Gillotts and every January we hand over a cheque to a local good cause from our Christmas appeal the year before. This year the charity in question was Salcare, which we have supported for the last couple of years to help it fund its much-needed food bank. It’s our pleasure to support them, but the money we raise is just one half of the story with our Christmas appeal, which also involves inviting families and members of the public into our office in Abbott Street to leave a message of remembrance on a label on our tree. At the same time they get to meet myself, my fellow funeral director Helen and our funeral arranger Amanda in circumstances that are somewhat different to the usual. The three of us have worked together at our Heanor office for a long time, and we make a great team. We all enjoy meeting and talking to families, because talking to them is a very rewarding part of the job.
Heanor Methodist Church – when anybody is free to pop in and talk to us about our industry and ask any questions they might have about what we do for a living. This may not sound like everyone’s cup of tea but I’m looking forward to developing it alongside Helen and Amanda and I do wonder what my father-in-law, Jack Gillott, who set up our firm, would have made of it. I’m sure it would have made him very proud, because he prided himself on what he had achieved building up the firm, and it gives me a warm feeling knowing that I am continuing his work. I’m sure that he would have loved talking to people at our Christmas launch or our Death Cafés if funeral firms had only done those things back in his day. They didn’t, so it’s up to those of us who bear the torch to change with the times by getting out into the town and playing an active part in our local community.
