Spanning 50 miles from top to bottom, Skye is adored worldwide for its lush green moors, jagged mountains, sparkling lochs and towering sea cliffs. The weather up here is not always cheery, but the frequent shrouds of mist only add to the island’s

Isles of Scilly If you’re looking for somewhere off the beaten track, the Isles of Scilly are just the ticket, a peaceful pocket of paradise just 28 miles off the coast of Land’s End in Cornwall. With white-sand beaches, subtropical gardens and some of Britain’s best weather, you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve left the UK entirely. There are five main islands: St Mary’s is the largest, followed by Tresco, with very few people living on Bryher, St Martin’s and St Agnes. Visiting the Scillies is like stepping back in time. Quiet, beautiful and completely unspoilt, you’ll have almost every pristine beach to yourself. The walks are outstanding and the islands are popular with nature-lovers too, thanks to the Atlantic grey seals that breed here, not to mention the flocks of rare seabirds. You can reach the islands by ferry or plane. Planes depart from Land’s End, Newquay and Exeter airports, or you can take the three-hour ferry crossing from Penzance to St Mary’s.

It was created by The National Onion Association to honour the day the association was incorporated in 1913. But other than knowing the common yellow, red and white varieties, what else do you know about onions? Here are some eye-watering facts about the many layered vegetable: They help you travel the world! Onions are a common cooking ingredient, used in various styles of cooking worldwide. You can visit India by adding some spices; with some tomatoes and herbs, you can be transported to Italy; with ginger and chilli, you can visit Thailand. It is certainly a versatile ingredient when it comes to cooking! And what would a ploughman’s be without the traditional pickled onion? If all this onion eating leaves you with interesting breath, you can chew parsley to get your mouth smelling sweet again.

They have health benefits Onions are nutrient dense and high in vitamin C, an antioxidant which assists with immunity. Their antiinflammatory properties may reduce high blood pressure and protect your heart, and they can also boost your digestive health as they contain prebiotics that strengthen your gut health. They are magical There are many magical myths associated with onions! They are said to cure baldness if you rub a cut onion on your head. Other folk remedies include protection from the plague, eliminating warts and getting rid of the common cold (if you eat one raw). You can also try placing onion slices in your socks overnight. They have mysterious origins We are not actually sure where they are from – their geographical origin is difficult to trace. Some sources state Iran or Central Asia but, wherever they originate, most researchers do agree that they have been cultivated and eaten for more than 5000 years. They were perhaps one of the earliest cultivated crops as they are easy to grow and store. They are useful at school Most of us meet the onion up close and personal during a science lesson. Due to their large cells and the ease of peeling off a layer, they are a common choice in demonstrating how to use a microscope. They make us cry! The sulphuric compounds present in onions are what makes our eyes sting when we chop them. There have been various techniques suggested to prevent this irritation. According to my research, the safest way to cut onions is with a stainless-steel knife whilst underwater and wearing safety goggles... You can live forever! The onion was revered by the ancient Egyptians: their spherical shape and layers of concentric circles were believed to symbolise eternal life. They were used in burial ceremonies to presumably transport the deceased to the afterlife, and onions have been depicted in paintings found inside pyramids and tombs. Life List: All Above Board Few games can inspire family arguments and grudges like Monopoly. Maybe it’s all that pretend money or the main objective being to bankrupt all of your opponents. But my biggest issue is that the game is riddled with inaccuracies. To start with, it’s called Monopoly but there are dozens of versions. As well as the various locations, you can also get special editions for: Batman, Alice in Wonderland (go to jail and off with your head?), Formula One, Star Wars (take a Chance card you must…), FIFA World Cup, Pirates of the Caribbean (community treasure chest?), and even a Dinosaur Edition (I make no bones about it). Here are some of the other anomalies: - Even the traditional London version has free parking. In London? I ask you! - Whoever heard of a bank error in your favour? - Everyone starts off with the same amount of money and makes their fortune in the property game on a roll of the dice. No business plan, no building regs / planning permission and not even a licence for a skip.

Just a Thought... Back to the Future

Summer is here and, at the time of writing, we are on course to be free of most social restrictions imposed by the cruel mistress, Covid. That’s that then; as you were and back to the future we had in mind c. January 2020 … or is it? I don’t think we can gloss over the emotional effects the pandemic has had on every single one of us and especially our mental health. Many people will be welcoming the re-opening of society and the freedoms it presents, however there are also those who view it with trepidation. Anxiety and depression are just two health conditions that have risen exponentially in the last 18 months. They are, sadly, not going to evaporate into the balmy summer ether merely because the immediate threat of the virus is in the rear view. We need to be more vigilant, honest and aware than ever of ourselves and those around us. You can’t always see mental health struggles. That smiling face with the, ‘I’m fine thanks,’ retort is the most common of masks. You may notice friends cancelling last minute,

not answering calls or just avoiding eye contact. These are subtle signs that someone may be struggling. Patience is key here. It is easy to personalise these behaviours, ‘Oh they don’t like me anymore,’ or, ‘Oh he’s making my life difficult’. Please, let’s try to always assume the best of others because, under these socially obscure presentations, may be a world of pain and struggle. Your understanding can be the first step to much needed support. The sunshine and long days are a gift indeed to be enjoyed and completely relished, so let’s do our absolute best to ensure that we can ALL be afforded that right. We must be considerate, courageous and kind in equal measure and only then can we truly get back to the future. Beer: Belper House Located just off the Market Place, by the High Street and Church Street Junction in Belper, the newly opened Belper House takes up a commanding position at the top end of town. Formerly an ironmonger’s at the turn of the last century, and then later a barber’s, the current owners have tried to make reference to Belper’s Industrial Heritage in the décor within the building. “The building was originally called Belper House, included in the old deeds which go back to the 1780s and the Strutts, so we felt no need to change the name! You can actually see a sign at the top of the building in the old photos with Belper House on it.”

With restrictions starting to be lifted and as we look to start leading normal lives once again, the timing of opening this new venture looks like a well-thought-out plan. However, that wasn’t always the case. “We initially started the refurbishment a few years ago with planning consent for new front windows and all the other sash windows having some tender loving care. The building is Grade II Listed, so everything had to go through a Listed Building process as well as normal planning applications. Our initial business plan saw us looking to open up in early summer 2020, however, everything ended up being around 6-9 months behind. Given the circumstances, we just rolled with it!” With Belper becoming a bit of a destination when it comes to pubs and bars, I was keen to understand

what offering the newly opened venture would bring to the beery landscape. “We will offer up to 6 traditional cask ales on hand pull and 8 keg lines catering for cider, lager and IPA drinkers. We will always have cask beers from local and independent brewers, as well as stocking other well-known popular brands, working on taste rather than popularity with what we do stock. Ale, lager, cider, gin and all spirit drinkers will be catered for with local distillery Shining Cliff Gin from Ambergate featuring. We are so proud of Derbyshire products and want to support other local businesses too. Food will also be sourced locally where possible.” As the new owners find their feet there are plans to introduce pop-up events such as quiz nights: “Our main aim is to become a part of the Belper community and fit in with the local real ale pub scene. It’s nice to be a part of the town I grew up in; Belper still has that lovely town feel – people know one another, and we are lucky to have a community feel, now lacking in many towns. It would be nice for the bar to feel as if we’ve always been here, after all the building has been part of the street scene for over 200 years! We have seating outside, just off the Market Place, and it’s a great place to sit, relax and watch the world go by, as long as the weather permits!” With the re-opening up, post-pandemic, of many bars and restaurants, Belper has never had it so good when it comes to choices to quench your thirst or enjoy a decent meal.

Word on Wine Following on from the last ‘Word on Wine’ article, when I was talking about the problems of the wine industry in South Africa, I thought I’d now look at the red wine that immediately comes to mind when we think about South African wines – the ‘Pinotage’ grape. This is South Africa’s own addition to the long list of grape varieties used to make wine. As far back as 1925, a viticulturist A. I. Perold at the Stellenbosch University created a new variety by crossing a Pinot Noir and Cinsault vine to create what was then commonly called ‘Hermitage’, before being contracted to ‘Pinotage’. It was not until 1961 that Pinotage appeared on a label of South African wine. Originally, the wine was looked upon with scorn, as a coarse red wine with flamboyantly sweetish and paint-like pungency. This has now been developed to produce a rich, long-lasting deep red wine whose wild fruitiness has been controlled by time and good oak ageing. Pinotage performs well, particularly on the coastal area of South Africa, producing intensely coloured grapes, easily reaching ripeness and with good acidity. Some of the best wines come from older low yielding ‘bush vines’. By the 1990s, producers had started to treat the wines with respect and experimenting in prolonged, cooler temperature fermentation. With the addition of using French and American oak barrels they have taken the grape to a new level by adding vanilla notes to the wine.

In 1992, Pinotage produced the cheapest red wine in South Africa, but by 1997 the old bush vine wines were demanding the highest prices for the grape. In 2003 the price of the Pinotage grapes had started to fall and winemakers started to use the grapes in what became ‘Cape Blend’ wines. However, the ‘Pinotage Producers Association’ started the revival of the grape and the modern ‘Pinotage’ range of wines came to the forefront. To a limited extent the vines are grown in Brazil, California, New Zealand and Zimbabwe. The wine that I would like to present to you is the Fairview Barrel Aged Pinotage 2019 from Waitrose. The Fairview winery, founded in 1693, is on the south-western slopes of the Paarl Mountains, just 40 minutes from Cape Town. Fairview have been championing Pinotage since the 1970s. This wine is made by Charles Back and bottled exclusively for Waitrose. It is aged in a mixture of new and seasoned French and American oak barrels, to respect the bright fruit of the grape. It is a medium-bodied wine from old bush vines, with aromas of ripe plums, red fruits and blackberries. On the palate hints of clove spice with good mouthfeel and soft tannins, with a fresh spicy lingering finish. Technical Details: Grapes: 100% Pinotage Appearance: Clean, clear wine. Recipe Lemony Pea and Broad Bean Red Rice Risotto A delicious, comforting dish. Red rice has a wonderful nutty flavour and is rich in fibre and antioxidants, making it a healthier option than white refined rice. Serves: 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 49 minutes Ingredients: 1 tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 red onion, finely chopped 500ml hot vegetable stock 125g Camargue red rice Zest of 1 lemon 1 tbsp lemon juice 100g frozen peas 100g shelled broad beans (fresh or frozen) 4 asparagus spears cut into 2cm pieces 1 tbsp grated parmesan cheese Nutritional information per serving: calories 403kcal fat 9.9g carbohydrates 59.4g protein 14g Method: Heat the oil in a large shallow pan and sauté the onion and garlic for 5 minutes. Add the rice and stir to coat in the oil.

Add the lemon, peas, broad beans and asparagus and cook for a further 4 minutes until tender. Spoon into bowls and scatter over the parmesan to serve.

This circular walk starts from the village of Ticknall a few miles southwest from Melbourne on the A514. There is limited street parking but you can start from the Staff of Life (grid ref SK350238), a walker friendly inn. They are happy for you to use their car park if you let them know and provided you give them some business before or after your walk! The Route 1. From the car park, walk back to the main road and turn right through the village to reach the main entrance to Calke Abbey on your right (grid ref. SK355240). This is just before the bridge across the main road. Between the pub and the entrance to Calke Abbey you will pass the village lock-up which was where unruly inhabitants were allowed to cool off before being released.

2. Walk down the main drive for about one and half miles (2.5 km) passing Betty’s Pond on your right, which is one of a series of ponds in the park, to reach a junction of tracks at grid ref. SK366219. 3. Turn sharp left here and walk towards the main house. It is worth making the short detour to the church before passing in front of the main house towards the extensive outbuildings which house a café and toilets. Turn half left and follow the path heading roughly WNW to reach the point between Betty’s Pond and Mere Pond (grid ref. SK363227). Turn sharp right and head east along a clear path that runs parallel to Mere Pond, which should be on your left. 4. The path reaches a footbridge (grid ref. SK368229) which you cross to continue on a rising path through woodland to reach open fields (grid ref. SK367233). Turn left here and continue on the well-used path with views to Staunton Harold Reservoir opening up on your right.

5. Keep straight ahead at the next path junction after which you descend into a shallow valley before climbing up to a small lane (grid ref. SK367239). Cross this and continue on the path that leads to a picnic area with its adjacent tower. Continue ahead to reach a road (grid ref. SK379247). 6. Turn left along this road (the B587) to the next T- junction. Take the bridleway opposite and follow this past St. Brides to reach the A514 (grid ref. SK364250). Cross over with care and continue on the bridleway passing a trig point. Vees Wood is on your left.

7. Entering woodland go straight ahead. Careful navigation on the next section is important and the relevant Ordnance Survey 1:25000 map is useful. The route is well used and you are aiming for the junction of paths at grid ref. SK351253 which is just after crossing a small stream and a short way south of a small pond.

8. At this junction turn sharp left and walk south to enter woodland once again. The bridleway is well used and soon leaves the wood to run alongside Stanton’s Wood on your left. Another short section through the wood leads you downhill towards the main road in Ticknall. Turn right along the main road back to the start. It is worth noting that the boundaries of woodland do change with time. There are some new sections of tree planting in the area as part of the National Forest. As a result of this it may be that there is some disagreement between what is on maps and what you find on the ground. Careful navigation will make sure you don’t go astray. Please maintain social distancing whilst walking.

Fitness Matters

The benefits of outdoor training have never been more important; it’s great to see more and more people lacing up their trainers and getting out.

As you have probably noticed if you’ve ventured outside or if you’ve been to the local park, outdoor running has experienced a resurgence during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are a number of reasons why we run (I am a runner) but, just to be clear, anyone who runs at whatever pace whether it’s at 16-minute miles or 6-minute miles, we are all runners. I get annoyed when clients say to me “I don’t really run as I’m so slow.” Yes, you can call yourself a runner! With the current situation, running is such a great exercise to do and you can easily judge if you’re getting better. You can set yourself goals to achieve, such as running a 5km. It helps with mental health, stress levels and definitely gets you away from the house and gives you some personal space, which may be hard to come by at the moment. Fantastic apps such as Couch to 5km help to give you structure and parkruns are fantastic to take part in, so you can have a go in a safe and friendly environment.

Please remember though, that if you’re new to running or returning to running, it is very important to do a rounded exercise programme. By this I mean introduce some strength training and core work. Strength training is often neglected in favour of miles, but it has the potential to reduce the risk of injury by correcting muscle imbalances and improving muscle activation. Particularly as we get older and lose muscle mass, strength training will help keep muscle mass and help us to recruit muscles while running more efficiently. It is fantastic to see how many people are enjoying this amazing activity and I look forward to seeing you pounding the streets or enjoying the countryside for many years to come! Footnotes: Corns Are No Joke It’s quite strange how people joke about how painful corns can be because anyone who suffers from them knows they are no laughing matter. Corns come in two varieties, Helloma Durum, the hard corn, and Helloma Molle, the soft corn. Soft corns develop between the toes and hard corns anywhere else. They are always caused by the same thing – pressure. When the foot encounters too much pressure, from footwear being too tight or standing on hard surfaces for too long, it produces hard skin to protect itself. However, if the cause of the pressure remains, the constant production of hard skin actually increases the pressure which ultimately results in a corn due to death of the skin at the living layer. The usual treatment of corns is to remove the centre (enucleation) and, in some instances, padding and/or treatment with a chemical such as silver nitrate. Unless the cause is removed however, they will come back, but this can be as simple as buying wider or bigger shoes. It’s a little known fact that your shoe size can increase by a half to a full size in your late thirties or forties. Hard corns, particularly on the ball of the foot, can be more difficult if you spend a lot of time on your feet. They usually require regular routine treatment to prevent them becoming painful again. If you do suffer from painful corns, you have my sympathy as I have suffered with them myself – which is why I don’t joke about them. By Peter Waugh, Amber Feet

Making Sure Your Car Is Roadworthy as Lockdown Restrictions Ease With the vaccine rollout in full swing and national lockdown measures taking effect, the roadmap to normality appears to be open. However, for many of us who’ve been working from home and keeping journeys local, our cars might not be in the best condition when we want to get back on the road. Here are a few tips and checks to make sure your car is in the best condition when normality resumes. Fluids Leaving your car for a long time is unlikely to affect the fluids too much, but it’s always worth checking in case they were low when you left the car. Check your oil by pulling out the dipstick (it has a yellow top). Clean it, then dip it back in and check the level. Also check windscreen washer fluid and coolant, as well as topping your fuel tank to the very top. Letting fuel run low can drag built-up dirt through the fuel system. Diesel particulate filter If you drive a diesel car built since 2007 – and a few before that – you’ll have a diesel particulate filter (DPF). It’s designed to catch soot particles to clean up emissions and burn them off when the exhaust is hot. However, if the system never gets hot enough, soot can build up and block the filter, so take the car on a longer drive to let it get up to temperature. However, if the DPF warning light comes on and doesn’t go away after a long drive, you might need to visit a garage. Brakes Over time and without use, corrosion can build on brake discs, which can cause issues if left long-term.

If you notice corrosion on the brakes, be careful for a while after you drive away. Don’t go too fast and brake earlier than normal, as braking performance might be worse. After a while the corrosion will be brushed off and the brakes will be back to normal. Tyres While your car is parked up for long periods, occasionally roll it forwards and backwards to prevent flat spots on the tyres. Look for cuts, bulges and cracking as these indicate oncoming failure. Check your tyre pressures are in line with what the manufacturer recommends. The figures for this are usually in the manual or on the door pillar. Battery When a car is left stationary for a long time, the battery can drain, so it’s worth checking it has enough charge to get going. Go out to your car and try to turn it on at a time when you don’t need to go somewhere, because if there’s no life in it then you’re not stranded. If it works, go for a fifteen-minute drive to keep the levels topped up – otherwise you’ll need jump leads to get it going. While driving to top up your charge, don’t go too far from home in case it fails. If this happens, you know your battery needs to be replaced.

Our Eccentric Inventors: Are They Having the Last Laugh? They might have been created the best part of a century ago, but William Heath Robinson’s delightfully wacky cartoons have a special resonance for us today, in our technologyobsessed age. Born in 1872, the famous British illustrator became a household name with his tongue-in-cheek drawings of imaginary, labour-saving contraptions assembled from old bicycle wheels, bits of wood, lengths of piping and lots and lots of string. Heath Robinson used gentle humour to celebrate the kind of well-intentioned amateur inventor who spends hours tinkering with various odds and ends, dreaming of commercial success. Times may have changed, but thankfully we still have inventors who are happy to keep plodding away in the hope of a big breakthrough – even if some of their ideas are almost as wacky as those in Heath Robinson’s drawings. John Ward and the window cleaners’ friend Eccentric inventor John Ward is known for inventions such as the musical frying pan, the revolving teaspoon and the portable bra warmer. Starting out as a trainee painter and decorator, John tried several occupations before deciding to build a career around his barmy inventions. Like the contraptions in Heath Robinson’s famous cartoons, John uses recycled materials to create many of his inventions. These include a ‘helicopter car’ and the ‘ladder-bicycle’: a bike which can be ridden, but when turned through ninety degrees becomes a handy stepladder for cleaning windows. Although John doesn’t take his work too seriously, he has been invited to showcase his inventions on TV in the UK, America, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Russia. He has also been involved in all kinds of promotional work, and is often asked

to create props, store displays and contraptions to be shown at county shows and exhibitions. Willy Johnson’s bottle top brainwave Willy Johnson is another British inventor who has patented a number of weird and wonderful ideas, including the ‘expanding plant pot’, a pleated plastic container “which can be expanded progressively to accommodate increased root growth.” He has also invented a floating soap containing a compressed sponge (that only becomes accessible once the soap is used up), and a television that can be turned off by means of a ‘soft missile’ thrown at the screen. Although none of these inventions has yet reached a mass market, one of Willy Johnson’s recent inspirations – providing a further life for the humble bottle top – has attracted considerable media interest. His invention, known as a ‘ToPo®’, has been designed to become a fun educational toy once the bottle is empty. ToPo® bricks can be joined together in various ways, creating all kinds of shapes, and the addition of a single letter on each brick means they can also be used to spell out words. While William Heath Robinson’s work satirises the lengths some inventors will go to in order to develop a winning idea, it’s great to see two British inventors whose slightly off-the-wall approach and quirky creativity has paid off. It shows how far you can go with a few recycled bits and pieces … and a lot of string. By Kate McLelland

Property Matters Glazed Timber Extensions – A Versatile Addition to Your Home Jon Pilkington suggests how you can transform your property with a timber glazed extension. Timber glazed extensions such as a garden room or orangery are a chic addition to any home whether traditionally styled or contemporary. When designed sympathetically to the property and built using modern manufacturing techniques, a timber-glazed extension will outlast, outperform and be far more attractive than any “off the shelf” UPVC conservatory. These extensions can be integrated into the existing room structure and will give a natural flow out into the garden to enjoy all year round. As well as being properly insulated and ventilated, these types of extension can also be as physically secure as any other part of the home. How do these differ from conservatories? While all these styles of extension are typically connected to a property, the differences in design and style can be considerable. The roof design is perhaps the most noticeable difference with a conservatory usually featuring a fully

glazed roof providing the maximum amount of light to the room below. In contrast, both a garden room and orangery will feature a semi-glazed roof. Typically a garden room will feature a tiled roof to blend with the existing lines and style of the property to which it is attached. This design can create amazing vaulted ceilings which can also feature roof glazing to the gables, increasing the amount of natural light to the room. An orangery roof will usually be flat, finished with lead or a modern alternative such as single ply polymeric roof membrane, and can feature a striking roof lantern providing natural light to the room below. All extension types typically feature brickwork to different extents, with conservatories often using low level walls to support the main structure. There is usually more variation with garden rooms and orangeries as these can be predominately made from brickwork, or a combination of brick and timber framing. Whichever timber glazed extension you choose, whether garden room or orangery, if well designed, manufactured and installed it has the potential to completely transform the way the property is used. Gardening Biological Bug Blasting Warmth and protection – just what most of us need, plants too – but sadly now that the warmer weather has arrived, plants growing in the protected environment of a greenhouse or conservatory are especially likely to suffer attacks from a whole host of pests and diseases. Why not tackle some of the more common pests using biological controls? They work well provided you have not used chemicals recently and don’t intend to introduce them. Biological controls may sound high-tech, but you are simply introducing tiny creatures in to control the pests, with no need for chemicals and therefore no chemical residues left on edible crops either. They’re safe for humans, pets and wildlife too!

of producing a very sticky excreta called honeydew and this causes a sugary layer to appear on the plants, often followed by black mould growth known as sooty mould. I’ve used a tiny parasitic wasp, Encarsia, with great results. This extremely small wasp lays her eggs in the young stage of the whitefly (often called the whitefly scale), killing it in the process, and then new Encarsia wasps hatch out of the parasitised whitefly scales. Provided there are some whitefly in the greenhouse, and as long as temperatures average 10C (50F), it works a treat. Red spider mites (which cause minute but densely packed flecking on the plant foliage, often followed by browning and dieback) are tiny and difficult to spot, and you may only notice the devastation they cause. These pests thrive in the warmer drier conditions likely to prevail a little later in the year, but they can be controlled biologically too with a predatory mite known as Phytoseiulus. This tiny mite has a voracious appetite for all the life stages of the red spider mite and can be introduced as long as average temperatures are about 16C (61F).

There are great controls for many outdoor pests, including slugs (Nemaslug), chafer grubs and leatherjackets, and one control with a wide range of vegetable-crop pest controllers in it. There is a nematode control for vine weevils that can be watered on to the compost of edible or ornamental plants. Best used in spring and autumn when there are higher levels of the grubs, it is easily applied with a watering can and is not too expensive. In greenhouses, plant-wrecking red spider mite and glasshouse whitefly numbers soon build up as the weather gets warmer. Whitefly also have a nasty habit

You can also get biological controls for other common greenhouse and conservatory pests, such as aphids (greenfly and blackfly), scale insects and mealy bugs. It really is a good way to keep pests down and provided you follow the instructions this truly environmentally friendly (and gardener-friendly too!) method takes some beating, so why not turn over a new leaf this year and let biological controls do the work for you? To his mother’s great embarrassment, they were later discovered in Dennis’s potting shed. Preston sighed. He disliked being the go-between in his mum and Dennis’s bizarre dramas. Since they’d both retired it’d been one thing after another. “I’ll go and see what he’s up to then.” Preston headed up the garden path. “But I’m not promising anything.” “Do what you like.” She slammed the back door. “I’ve washed my hands of him.” He found Dennis in the garage, as expected, sitting on an old dining chair with the cricket on the radio. “I hear you’re skulking. I’ve brought you a cuppa.” “That’s lovely.” Dennis gingerly took the steaming mug. “Don’t suppose there’s any chance of a biscuit?” “Thought you’d have a secret stash, while you’re in the dog house.” Preston perched on a paint-splashed stool, and decided to get straight to business. “Mum wants you to stop peering over the fence.” “Who says I am?” Dennis raised his eyebrows. “I’m not peering over it, I’m looking right at it. It’s very fascinating, as a matter of fact.” “Pull the other one, Dennis.” Preston persisted. “Nobody in their right mind sits all day staring at a fence.” “Why don’t you have a look for yourself?” Dennis shrugged, and moved to one side. “Then you’ll see what I’m on about.”

Preston leaned forward to see through the dusty glass. Across the fence he could see straight into Mrs Loveday’s steamy bathroom window. “You can’t look at that!” He jerked back. “You’ll get yourself arrested.” “What are you talking about?” Dennis frowned. “There’s no harm in it.” “What if she catches you looking?” Preston slapped his forehead. “There’ll be hell to pay.” Dennis looked through the glass and shrugged. “I imagine she’ll just scamper away.” He sipped his tea. “It’s funny, I always thought it was a chap.” Preston opened his mouth to speak but could not find the words. “He bobs along the fence, does all sorts of acrobatics.” Dennis smiled. “I’ve started putting nuts out, look.” Preston put down his tea and looked again. A fat grey squirrel perched on the fencepost clutching a peanut in his delicate paws. “Cyril the squirrel,” Dennis grinned. “He’s a canny little thing, isn’t he?” “Why didn’t you just tell Mum about the squirrel?” Preston laughed. “She’s been getting her knickers in a right twist.” “I have, umpteen times,” Dennis protested. “But you know your mother, she doesn’t listen.” Preston nodded. He sipped his tea, watching the nimble squirrel weave up the sycamore. “I don’t suppose you had anything to do with stealing Mrs Loveday’s tights either?” he said, now that they were friends again. “Oh no, that was definitely me,” Dennis chuckled, rubbing his nose. “I thought they’d be ideal for keeping the pigeons off my bean row.” By Jackie Brewster

Girl Guides

Once Again Girlguiding Rises To the Challenge The pandemic has been described as being like the war for community spirit and resilience. Girl guides were very active in both World Wars, helping and supporting within communities. In this pandemic, girls in guiding aged from 5-18 have been ‘Doing their Best’. In Amber Valley units of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers have kept in contact virtually and through activity packs. They have joined virtual camps and sleepovers, camping in the garden or building indoor dens or pillow forts. In May 2020, Derbyshire Girlguiding organised a countywide virtual camp, with 6000 girls from around the globe participating! There has been much fundraising for the NHS, the British Legion’s 11/11 Appeal, sponsored miles challenges to help maintain the Guide Garden and for numerous individual charities. Girls have helped to cheer up local communities, from the youngest Rainbows creating daffodil pictures for windows and Brownies making green hearts and painted

pebbles to decorate community spaces, through to Guides and Rangers making cards, bookmarks, gifts and tree decorations for Cheer Hampers delivered to local homes. Briefly, outdoor Guiding resumed in the early autumn with socially distanced activities including campfire cooking, archery, tennis, town and country trails, as well as Duke of Edinburgh’s Expeditions. When lockdown returned, girls joined in a virtual camp/sleepover and went back to virtual meetings, enjoying murder mysteries, escape rooms, Window Wonder and recycle challenges. One unit had a goat attend virtually! Local Guides joined with other girls in the Midlands Region to experience a virtual international activity weekend with myriad activities from line dancing, yoga, Zumba, exploring with the Navy and Army, to cooking and learning how to care for hedgehogs. Adult volunteers also enjoyed sessions including laughing yoga, crafts, advent calendar making and learning to cook an Indian meal via a Zoom link to the International Guide Centre in Pune, India. Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK, with over 500,000 members. It is great fun for everyone, including the volunteer leaders. The Diary of a Local Mum Here’s Looking at You, Kid When you have a baby, everyone seems to want to liken it to either one, or the other, or both of its parents. The little, red, round, bald bundle apparently looks ‘just like you!’ or the ‘spitting image of his/her dad’. Hmm, yes, if you say so… it also bears a striking resemblance to the wrinkled old man who just walked past, but perhaps we shouldn’t go there! As more and more visitors see your little bundle of joy, these comparisons continue and often become increasingly tenuous – ‘She’s got long fingers like Auntie Annie’, ‘He’ll be tall like Uncle Bert’, ‘Your great Grandpa had that exact same dimple!’. And, while genetically there’s bound to be some family likeness, babies change so much day by day in the early weeks. While one day you’re told they look like one person, the next you’re told they look like someone else…and so it goes on. In truth, unless they’re an identical twin, they have their own totally unique features. They look like themselves. I’ve often been told that both of my kids look like me – and so has their dad. In fairness, we’ve all got dark hair and dark eyes, so there’s bound to be some similarity! I can rarely see a resemblance, I just see my kids; every inch of their faces so familiar as I’ve watched them grow and change over the years. Having said that, occasionally I’m floored by a glance, an expression or a photo which suddenly seems to capture something of another family member. Even the way they speak or react to a situation. The similarity can be a look, a gesture or part of their character but all of a sudden you can see what others have claimed to be evident from day one – this unique little person is made up of building blocks from various generations. When they walk just like grandad, or laugh at the exact same things that grandma does on the TV. When they pull the same face that dad does when they concentrate. Or, when your not-so-smart phone’s face recognition technology categorises a picture of

you in amongst photos of your son and all of a sudden it’s like looking in a mirror. And then it’s gone again. They’re their own person, but you’ve just caught a glimpse of the small part you’ve contributed. In many ways, your kids are like an upgraded model – you, Mark II. You can see in them strengths where you have weaknesses, perfections where you have flaws. They love things that you hate (and hate things that you love – the taste for marmite is not hereditary, apparently. My stash of Twiglets is safe!). For every similarity there’s a difference, and that’s great. It really wouldn’t do if we were all carbon copies. While every now and then it’s nice to spot a likeness in my kids, I also love to sit back and watch in wonder at everything that I am not. There may be familiar snippets of other people in there but they have their own unique characteristics, appearances, opinions, likes, dislikes, strengths and interests and watching these emerge as they grow and their character develops is fascinating. So, here’s looking at you, kid. You’re your own person … and you absolutely rock.

Belper School Belper School Creative Writers had the task of creating a short story, with little stimulus. They were told to write a short story that included the following, very random, objects in some way of their choice (they could appear in any order and didn’t necessarily have to be connected): - An old pair of glasses - A lock with no key - A letter that wasn’t meant for you - A lamp with a candle - No access to technology I hope you enjoy how Rowan Davies in Year 8 crafted his story... “Jordan, don’t forget to leave your phone at home, you know how particular your grandad is about tech!” My mum was yelling again. It’s Thursday, and I’m going to visit my grandad who has dementia. He doesn’t accept change and we have to leave any tech we have at home. I check on him every Thursday to make sure he’s ok. He never has been. As I open the door to his house, I catch a glimpse of his forbidden back room, which is strictly off limits as it is a “reminder of his former self.” I’ve always wanted to see what was in that room as it promises to answer my most pressing question… who was my grandad? After putting grandad down for his afternoon nap, I was burning with curiosity. Grandad would never know if I went in. He always kept it under lock and key but the door was so old I could probably knock it down with a strong sneeze. I had to know what secrets were being held in there. After bullying myself towards the decrepit door, I stared at the keyless lock, preparing to attempt to break in. After two gentle nudges and a thousand large creaks and groans, the beaten door finally gave in. As I sneaked through what appeared to be a poorly lit shrine, I saw a number of odd items on the dust covered desk, including: an old pair of protective glasses, a lamp with a wax candle and a letter with a fancy wax seal coated

in a layer of dust. It was apparently dated in 1951. The fancy writing on the letter said… “Dear Frank Barkley, I am writing to congratulate you on your meritorious acts at risk of your own safety. Word has reached me of your bravery and I felt it was my duty and honour to reach out to you. Saying that you have saved someone’s life is not something that most people can claim to have done, though I imagine that you wear that statement proudly. I also thought you should know that this award was requested to be delivered to you by Beryl and Margeret Morris, the children of the man you saved from being buried alive in the mining accident. I would also like to inform you that I am putting forward any and all items you require to help you recover from the tragic head injury you sustained saving Alan Morris’ life. Memory loss is no reward for the noble and brave and I wish you a speedy recovery. Yours sincerely, King George VI.” So that’s why grandad is ill, he was injured saving a man’s life in the mines. As I put down the letter and started to leave, it struck me, I now know who my grandad was. My grandad was a miner. My grandad was a hero. Perhaps he won’t notice I broke his door... Parenting And so to sleep…

Older children and teenagers need around ten hours of sleep a night. Tell that to a hyperactive nine-year-old who’s still bouncing around the house at 11.30pm, declaring that he’s not even slightly tired… Wind down Remember the whole ‘bath, warm milk, story, bed’ routine you tried when they were little? A wind-down routine still helps now they’re older; you just need to adapt it for their age. Make sure they’ve burned off their energy long before bedtime, and help them to calm their mind with a book, meditation app or calming music before bed. Fresh air Children need light, air and exercise to thrive. So do teens. My kids always sleep better after a day outdoors or a run through the woods. Those outings are pretty rare these days, but I try to at least drag them out for a walk a few times a week, or chuck them out into the garden to wear off some energy on the trampoline. It’s easier to get kids to exercise, but teens can be another matter. According to the NHS, teenagers need at least an hour’s exercise every day. Restrictions allowing, you could encourage them to go for a walk with a friend or head out for a bike ride. They could also start a new activity, such as a martial art or dance now that these activities have resumed for under-18s. Cut the screen-time It’s best to have at least an hour away from screens before bed as the blue light can interfere with sleep. Ideally, keep tablets, phones, TVs and so on out of bedrooms. It’s just too tempting to watch another funny video, answer a message or build another Minecraft creation. Stick to a routine Most of us enjoy staying up later at the weekend and having a lie in. However, if your child struggles with

sleep, it’s best if they stick to a routine – going to bed and getting up at the same time every day. Keep a diary Everyone has the occasional bad night’s sleep. But if your child or teen regularly trails into the kitchen bleary-eyed and tetchy, it might be worth keeping a sleep diary. This basically just means noting down what time they fell asleep and woke up, the quality of sleep and anything that might have contributed towards that (e.g. stressed about school, sugary treat after dinner etc.). You can also note how much time they spent outdoors, how much screen time they had, what they ate for dinner and so on. At the end of the month, look back to see if there are any patterns. If there are, it might be time to make some changes. Do what works for you You need to do what works best for you and your child. If I know my kids really need an early night, I cuddle up with them in my bed and we all read together. They fall asleep earlier than usual and then I just take them through to their own beds. Let’s Talk About the Perimenopause I was 39 when I started having menopausal symptoms. By 42, hot flushes were a daily annoyance; I was waking up several times a night with joint pain; and I just felt generally old. In short, the perimenopause was proving a royal pain in the proverbial. The average age of the menopause is 51, but the perimenopause (the time leading up to the menopause when levels of oestrogen and progesterone are decreasing) can last for years. Symptoms The most common symptoms include: • Irregular periods • Hot flushes/night sweats • Mood changes • Fatigue • Loss of libido • Joint paint • Urinary problems

HRT

Some types of HRT may slightly increase your risk of breast cancer but HRT could also decrease your risk of other serious illnesses, particularly if you’re going through the menopause early. In my case, my GP felt it was the right choice for me. Since being on HRT, my joints no longer ache, I have more energy and the hot flushes have gone (thank goodness). Dr Louise Newson is a leading menopause specialist and the founder of the Balance app. She recommends seeking help early: “The perimenopause is when hormone levels start to reduce so this is actually the best time to start taking HRT. When hormone levels reduce, symptoms commonly occur and also health risks start, such as an increased risk of heart disease and osteoporosis.”

Supplements

Before starting HRT, I took turmeric and evening primrose oil, which did seem to ease my symptoms. However, there is little evidence about how effective supplements are, and some should not be taken if you have certain health conditions. So do your research, speak to your doctor and only buy from a reputable retailer.

Dealing with hot flushes

I kept a bottle of rose water in the fridge to spritz on my face when the heat hit. An electric fan can help, as can wearing layers that are easy to whip off. The NHS advises reducing alcohol and caffeine. (Neither of which I succeeded at.) If hot flushes are making your life a misery, do talk to your doctor as they may be able to prescribe something.

Exercise

Weight-bearing exercise (such as running) offers you some protection against osteoporosis. Ideally, find an exercise partner to keep you motivated. And, if you’re a fan of The Walking Dead, you need to try the ‘Zombies, Run!’ app. If you’re not keen on running, there are thousands of exercise videos on YouTube, from Yoga with Adriene to high-energy dance workouts.

Make sure of what you wish for make a will Most of us have an idea of what we want to happen after we have gone. Who will look after things in the first few days, who will arrange our funeral and most of all, who we would choose to inherit after our death. Local History Something from Strutts

If you are local to Belper you will probably be familiar with the wonderful landmark Grade II listed building built as a school for the township, generously funded entirely by George Herbert Strutt. Designed by architects Hunter and Woodhouse, it was intended to complement the style of Babington Workhouse built opposite. Opened by the Duke of Devonshire in 1909, the building has stood the test of time, adapting to various changes, becoming Higher Elementary, Grammar, Middle and Primary Schools over the years. Many a ‘Strutty-Banger’ has passed through these doors! When Herbert Strutt Primary School moved to new premises in 2008, a local group of people, passionate about the building, its legacy and importance to the community, worked with the council authorities to achieve an agreed change of ownership. Their commitment and dedication ensured that the site would become a social enterprise, providing facilities for the community and local businesses, under the terms of the original deed of covenant set out by George Herbert Strutt. Strutts Community Centre remains a valuable asset to Belper. The invaluable team of hardworking, friendly volunteers enable many clubs, groups, business meetings, activities and events to take place. Upbeat: Derbyshire Constabulary Invest in New Drone Technology Derbyshire Constabulary has invested in a number of new drones, which will allow better assistance at incidents such as warrants, road traffic collisions, and searches for missing people. Based with the force’s central drone team, the DJI Matrice 300 RTK will allow the team to fly for longer and in all weather types. The new piece of kit has a 55-minute flight time (an increase of 20 minutes on current equipment), as well as the ability to fly in the rain, and in winds of up to 33mph.

To support this, an advanced sensor can also immediately deliver coordinates to officers on the ground, allowing them to get a precise location when searching for missing people and suspects. New drones are also being delivered to officers at stations across the county. The Mavic 2 Enterprise is an upgrade to the drones teams currently have, and features an improved thermal camera, 48MP visual camera and 32x zoom capability. These will give a considerable improvement for the day-to-day use in fair weather, as well as for night-time search capability, while the larger M300 drone will predominantly be used in the more rural areas in adverse weather.

It also has a much higher transmission range, which will allow larger areas to be covered by drone. The upgraded camera has thermal capabilities and features a 20x zoom, which will allow operators to get a closer inspection or identification on what they’re filming.

Back in August 2019, the drone team launched a 24/7 capability. Since then, they have proved to be invaluable in life-threatening situations, finding missing people, helping to detect cannabis grows, and tracking down suspects on the run as they hid in bushes or jumped over fences.

Additional features mean a quick tap can track an object from the camera, which will be invaluable when the team assist in car chases, or when suspects try to leave their property.

The use of drones in policing continues to save the force money in officer deployment hours and call outs for the National Police Air Service.

Amber Valley CVS Would you like to get involved with your local community? Amber Valley CVS are looking for volunteers to help and support Amber Valley residents with a “befriending” and “home from hospital support service”. Could you spare an hour a week to have a cup of tea and chat with someone who is unable to get out and about, often meaning they feel lonely and isolated? Help with shopping or collecting a prescription may be required. You will be given free training and support, but no special qualifications are required to volunteer, just the ability to listen and to show an interest in someone else’s life. Cats on the Internet: Can We Ever Get Enough of Them? In 2005, YouTube co-founder Steve Chen became the first person to upload a cat video, which showed his pet, Pyjamas, playing with a piece of rope. Unfortunately Steve’s thirty second clip, filmed in semi-darkness, failed to spark much interest and cat video fans were forced to wait until May 2006 for the first viral hit. When Michael Wienzek posted ‘Puppy vs. Cat’, a short film that featured seven curious Labrador puppies circling round a less than delighted adult cat, the post attracted 16 million hits. Here are some more online felines that have since become household names:

Grumpy Cat

The combination of a pronounced underbite and a condition known as feline dwarfism gave Grumpy Cat (otherwise known as Tardar Sauce) her disgruntled expression. Her image was often accompanied by captions such as “I had fun once. It was awful.” Although Grumpy Cat has sadly passed away, her memory lives on in online images and merchandise (one popular online store sells almost 900 items featuring her face). At the time of Grumpy Cat’s death, aged seven, she had accumulated more than 1.5 million followers on Twitter, 2.5 million followers on Instagram and 8.3 million followers on Facebook. It’s rumoured that she also made $100 million from film and media appearances, sponsorship deals and merchandise sales.

Maru

Japanese cat Maru has achieved a Guinness World Records title for being the most-viewed animal on YouTube. Maru is a Scottish Fold cat with a characteristically round face (the name means ‘circle’ in Japanese). Maru’s owner originally

planned to document his pet growing from a kitten to an adult, without any intention of creating a video star. When the first video was released in 2008 it received relatively low viewing figures, and it wasn’t until Maru’s owner decided to introduce some cardboard packaging into his cat’s playtime routine that things really took off. From the moment Maru was confronted by a cardboard box, it was clear that his playful response would give rise to a million likes and follows. Maru’s most popular videos feature him skidding, jumping and diving into boxes, or sticking his head through holes cut into the cardboard.

Choupette Lagerfeld

After fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld died in 2019, rumours abounded that he had left much of his vast fortune to his Birman cat, Choupette. During the years she spent touring the high-fashion circuit with her outlandish owner (who designed a Louis Vuitton carrier bag especially for her), Choupette became an internet sensation and now has over 85 thousand followers on Instagram. She currently lives with a nanny (the former Lagerfeld housekeeper Françoise Caçote) in Paris, and still visits her agent for the occasional photoshoot.

A staple of popular culture

Nowadays cat videos are some of the most viewed features on YouTube. In 2015 it was estimated that two million cat videos had been shared on the platform, so the number could easily have reached three million or more by now. Whether we view videos, buy cat-related merchandise or follow the social media account of a famous feline, it seems the internet has effectively transformed cat-watching from a niche entertainment to a staple of popular culture.
