WELCOME LETTER Hello readers, old and new. Welcome to the ‘Late Summer’ edition of All Things Local! Well, what a few months it has been! Life has changed so much in a short space of time, in ways that none of us could have foreseen. The word ‘unprecedented’ has probably been used more in 2020 than ever before, but there’s really no other word for it! The world has been turned upside-down by this global pandemic and sadly many lives have been lost. We would like to offer our heartfelt sympathies to all those who have been personally affected by this terrible virus, and our gratitude to those keyworkers who have bravely continued to keep essential services running throughout the crisis. There have also been positives to emerge from the situation though, and despite having to maintain physical distances, communities have come together to support one another and offer aid to the most vulnerable. People have sewed scrubs, made face coverings, shopped for friends and neighbours, and connected in new ways. The weekly ‘clapping for the NHS’ was a moving show of united support and gratitude that we will remember for years to come. Towns and villages also came together in unique, quirky ways to lift people’s spirits, showing a sense of fun and community spirit that we can all be proud of – the ‘Belper Moo’ sent a wave of bovine bellows through the town at 6.30pm each day, making headlines and attracting attention all over the world, while residents in Horsley donned fancy dress for a ‘Doorstep Dance’ every Sunday evening! As with many businesses, the Coronavirus limited the way were able to operate and we could not safely publish and deliver the June/July issue of All Things Local. This meant that, for the first time in 13 years, we weren’t able to reach you, our readers. Thankfully the situation seems to be improving, so we’re thrilled to be back with this ‘Late Summer’ edition and doing what we love - bringing our community magazine to thousands of homes and businesses in the local area. During the ‘Lockdown downtime’ we were afforded the opportunity to reassess what we can bring to the

We have consolidated All Things Local into two editions (Village and Belper) rather than the previous three, but by doing so it has allowed us to extend our distribution area to take in many additional streets and villages. So…we would like to offer a warm welcome to our new readers! We hope that you enjoy everything that All Things Local has to offer – including information, articles, stories, competitions and, of course, a host of local businesses providing excellent products and services. For this issue, we’ve suspended the Little Black Book and Community Diary sections because, at the time of publishing, these

The vast majority of our advertisers are small businesses often run by families or individuals who live in the areas that they serve, many of whom have been part of All Things Local for years. The impact of the global pandemic meant most needed to ‘adapt to survive’ over these past few difficult months. Help Still Available for Those In Need Residents in need of help and support to get food or prescriptions are being reminded by Derbyshire County Council to register for help if they have no friends or family to call on. As many people across the county start to return to work, vulnerable friends, relatives and neighbours could find themselves with limited or no support. Residents are being reminded that the county council’s Community Response Unit can provide help to deliver food, prescriptions or even a friendly phone call to those living alone and feeling isolated. Anyone not on the shielded list who is in need of food, prescriptions or a befriending call and has no one to help them should contact the Community Response Unit online at derbyshire.gov.uk/gethelp or by calling 01629 535091 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm or Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

Just a Thought... The ‘ C ‘ Word

I wanted to write about something different. I wanted to change the subject. I wanted to be glib and eyebrow-raisingly amusing. Inevitably though, I am going to have to bring up the ‘C’ word. CORONAVIRUS. There I have said it out loud … I’m still here … OK. We have all spent the last eleventy-billion days living La Vida Lockdown and, if you are reading this, you are surviving. It has been anything but a joke. Some of you will have lost income, some of you will have lost patience, some of you will have lost freedoms and, worst of all, some of you will have lost loved ones. It seems to have been all about losing and we cannot underplay nor ignore that fact. Looking to the future we take the pain, the difficulty, the change and the uncertainty with us – yet I know we can use it to start to win.

We cannot bring back lost lives, we cannot go back to ‘normal’ (whatever that was) and we cannot change the path we’ve been forced to walk through this pandemic. We can choose to connect in new ways. Travel Kerala Backwaters Nestling between the steep slopes of the Western Ghats and the legendary Arabian Sea in Southern India, Kerala meanders through canals and lagoons, sprinkling its lush scenery and unique culture in ‘the land of coconut palms’. With over a thousand kilometres of waterways, including thirty-eight rivers and lakes that look almost like the sea, this enchanting corner of India holds everyone spellbound. Spreading inland from Cochin, like a vast open fan, Vembanad is the largest lake, ninety-six kilometres long and up to fourteen wide, dotted with islands and cooled by a welcome breeze. Smaller than it was since land was reclaimed, it is listed nevertheless as a wetland of international importance, home to some twenty thousand waterfowls, native and migratory birds from the Himalaya and beyond, such as the Siberian cranes. On the eastern shore of the lake, the Kumarakom Sanctuary is a favourite haunt for any bird watcher. Vembanad and the main waterway have plenty of boats, the latter with the occasional traffic jam, coracles, canoes, fishing crafts, ferries sailing from bank to bank and traditional rice barges converted into luxurious houseboats for tourists in the know. But small inland channels have a charm all of their own, vanishing through the trees in a never-ending maze of wonders. Palm trees mingle their reflections along the banks, exotic birds add touches of colour, a golden oriole, a green bee-eater, an Indian pond heron, dull brown until it takes off to reveal its glowing coppery shades and beautiful white wings. There are orchids and snow-flaked lilies, water hyacinths spreading right across the water in places and

rice fields here and there, shimmering emerald green under a bright blue sky. Alappuzha, the ‘Venice of the East,’ is a bustling hub for houseboats but local life goes on in sleepy villages draped in hibiscus, a Hindu goddess’ favourite bloom attracting humming birds and myriad butterflies. Women lay out offerings in the early morning while pretty girls with ribbons in their hair wait for a boat to take them to school. Then it’s time to scrub the laundry on the canal bank, pick courgettes from the garden or prepare the fish father just brought in. The tapping of hammers echoes along the lane, men build a boat, others weave palm fronds on a bamboo-framed parasol. The earth glows red, a temple bell chimes now and then, and in the rising heat the village bursts with colour, all red roofs and walls painted green, blue, purple, orange, sheltering under the coconut trees. Kerala is relaxed – try herbal tea or Ayurveda – but come festival time, a new vibrancy takes over the land, sweeping everyone off their feet. Parades, rituals, boat races, caparisoned elephants, there are year-round celebrations with lots of music and dance, most dramatic the traditional Kathakali when painted faces and voluminous costumes send shivers down your spine. But late into the night peace returns to ‘God’s Own Country’, lulled by the lapping of water under a starlit sky. By Solange Hando

Walking Back To Happiness When I was a child, I was dragged out every Sunday on a 7-mile or so walk as part of the local rambling club. At the time I either loved or hated this experience, depending on how far we were travelling and any inclement weather. But the older I get, the more I appreciate both the experience I had at the time and the present moaning from my own daughter at being dragged out for a walk around the woods every day! Just being outside instead of cooped up indoors can have a mind-altering effect and boost your mood. The simple act of stepping outdoors became even more important as the country went into lockdown. I now realise that walking and being in nature is in my blood. Passed down from the generations before me and hopefully to be passed along to the generations after me. The gift of a love for the outdoors cannot be underestimated. One of the home working tasks suggested by my daughter’s primary school was a “Walk up Everest” challenge. This involved walking the same number of steps you would need to conquer the highest mountain in the world. I was surprised to learn that it was 58,070. The benefits of doing this challenge from home included no lack of oxygen, no extremes of temperatures and a not a trace of deep snow. But, by using a pedometer, it made us realise just how much we walk over a regular week. Wanting to rise to the challenge, we stepped it up a gear and travelled further afield to make sure we made it to the top during the ten days. Being restricted to the local area meant that we had to get creative with routes. We also started to appreciate the little things that had previously gone unnoticed. Different types of wildflowers began to appear, alternative paths came into view and we even stumbled upon a gnome village. Well, on walks with children the imagination is important! Charles Dickens apparently took 20-mile treks in order to dream up plots for his books. He said: “Walk and be happy. Walk and be healthy.”

John Muir, the naturalist, noted, “In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.” So put one foot in front of the other and see where it takes you.

And Another Thing Tom Receives a Proposal… Part III So, Dear Reader, if you have been following the story of star-crossed lovers Nige and Val, you will have read about the joy of the proposal and the fun of the stag do. And now, inevitably, we must turn to the day of reckoning – the dreaded nuptials. “Tom? Tom!? Get up!” Bleary-eyed, I reached for the clock. Six am. “Another ten minutes darling then I’ll…mmm.” But my promises of cooperation disappeared into the folds of Egyptian cotton as I curled up and toasted my toes in the warmth of My Dearly Beloved’s recently departed half of the matrimonial bed. “Tom, get up! There’s so much to do.” “In case you haven’t noticed, it’s not us getting married, it’s Nige and Val – not that I wouldn’t do it all over again…” But my lame dribbling cut no ice with Sarah, as she prepared to reverse herself into her outfit. “Go and get a shower and leave me in peace.” Like any husband with an ounce of gumption, I took my cue to evacuate the scene. Showered, changed into my trackies and with my own outfit hanging on the back of the dining room door, I padded downstairs. Standing in the hall, I shouted up to Sarah. “Darling, I think some of the flowers have been delivered by mistake. There’s a weird plastic bunch here on the side.” Sarah leaned over the banister, a clean tissue clamped firmly between her red lips. With her brow furrowed she said. “Tom! That’s my hat!” I stared at the thing with fresh eyes. “Oh I see! Err, how does it stay on your barnet though? Not that it isn’t gorgeous…” A sigh from above as a white tissue with a perfect red-lipped imprint landed at my feet. Now it was my turn to look the part. The crisp linen shirt was negotiated with ease. My cravat, however, presented more of a challenge. “Sarah, what do you do with this? And where’s the rest of my waistcoat?”

Sarah reappeared, now a vision in turquoise. “Look, I told you to go for a second fitting. They tell you how it all goes together.” Thankfully, in a flash of feminine husbandry, I was ready (almost). Patting my lapel, Sarah stood back to admire her handiwork. “Right, off you go to Nige’s. Hang on – you’ve got shaving foam on your earlobe.” I eased my Mondeo Ghia X down Nige’s cul-de-sac and presented myself at his door, only to be greeted by pandemonium. Kelly, Nige’s sister practically dragged me inside. “Thank goodness you’re here. Can you go upstairs? Nigel’s locked himself in the bathroom.” I paused for a moment to wonder at her orange face. “Fine, but I’ve left my tool bag at home.” Kelly shook her head. “What? Blood and sand - why are men so thick? Tom, he’s refusing to come out!” Then it finally dawned. Two seconds later I was sat on the landing carpet, gently tapping on the bathroom door. “Nige? Are you there?” Eventually, Nigel replied. “What do you want?” “Oh I was wondering if you had any tips for Haydock Park next week? What do you think I want? What the heck are you playing at?” “Tom, I’m scared.” “You’re scared? Imagine what Sarah will be like if I tell her I couldn’t talk you out of the bathroom? Listen, mate – marriage is scary, it’s a commitment, it’s a responsibility, it’s being sensible and its being mature – it’s everything we boys hate, so of course you’re scared. I’m permanently terrified. But Valerie is sat drinking champagne with curlers in her hair giggling with her Auntie Joan. Are you going to let her down? Because if you don’t open that flipping door, I’ll kick it in and flipping drag you there myself!” A pause, then from behind a bedroom door I heard a ripple of applause. Five women of a certain age appeared, all intent on giving me a hug. Eventually, the bathroom door unlocked and there stood Nigel in his morning coat and underpants. “Right sonny Jim – put your pants on and let’s go and get married!” And get married, Dear Reader, is precisely what Nigel did. ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’? Become a Wildlife Recorder! According to Dr John Blewitt, a specialist in Social Responsibility at Aston University in Birmingham, many of us are suffering from a new condition known as “nature deficit disorder”. Before you rush to google the symptoms, it may help to know that this isn’t a real medical condition, but a term coined to describe people who are cut off from the natural world. Research carried out by the charity Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) has revealed that a significant percentage of young adults aged between 16 and 23 are so divorced from nature they believe that eggs are made from wheat and don’t know that milk comes from a cow. In a timely intervention, Bristol Natural History Consortium, together with 14 partner organisations, has come up with a national initiative that promises to put us back in touch with the natural world. BioBlitz is a research programme that encourages ordinary people to become wildlife explorers for a day (find out more at www.bnhc.org.uk). However if 24 hours isn’t long enough to satisfy your curiosity about the natural world, never fear: you can go on to take part in a range of wildlife initiatives that keep going all year round. To take part in the ladybird survey you have to record observations, identify ladybirds (including the Harlequin) and report your results.

Buy a mammal footprint tunnel Ever wondered which small mammals pass through your garden at night, searching for food? Nottingham Trent University has come up with an ingenious way to detect the presence of hedgehogs, mice, shrews and other small creatures. The Footprint Tunnel is a non-invasive tool designed to help researchers identify the presence of animals by identifying their paw-prints, captured on special inked paper. You can buy a mammal footprint tunnel online, or find instructions on how to make your own. There are also guides available to help you identify different species from their paw-prints. The Mammal Society (mammal.org.uk) says that “mammals are some of the most under-recorded species in Britain.” If you see a mammal or signs of one, they encourage you to record your sighting using their Mammal Mapper app which you can download for free from their website. Add value to your birdwatching hobby BirdTrack is a national research programme that uses people power to supply information on birds where there are currently gaps in our knowledge (for example, very little is known about the timing of arrivals and departures of migrating species). The information you supply to BirdTrack could eventually be used to protect our birds, particularly rare species. Just register on the site www.bto.org as a recorder and the next time you go birdwatching, enter the location you’ve visited, the date and time of your visit then check off the birds you spotted on the list provided. There are many other ways that you can get involved in monitoring wildlife, including a butterfly survey, a national reptile and amphibian recording scheme, a flying ant survey and a shark egg case hunt! These innovative wildlife recording projects are not only a fantastic way to learn about the great outdoors, they also make a real contribution to the nation’s knowledge, so get out there and start recording today. Recipe Paella

Enjoy the flavours of Spain with this classic rice dish. It makes a great one-pan supper served with crusty bread and a green salad. Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 hour Ingredients: 1 tbsp virgin olive oil 225g chorizo, diced 1 large onion, chopped 275g paella rice Few strands saffron 1.1l fish or chicken stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped 100g frozen peas 2 tsp paprika 250g cooked peeled prawns, thawed if frozen Few fresh mussels, scrubbed Method: Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chorizo to the pan and fry for 3-4 minutes. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. Fry the onion in the pan juices for 5 minutes then stir in the rice and saffron and cook while stirring for 1 minute. Pour in the stock, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring frequently.

Return the chorizo sausage to the pan and add the pepper, peas, paprika and prawns. Simmer gently for a further 10 minutes until the rice is nearly tender and all the liquid has been absorbed, stirring occasionally. Top with the mussels and cover and cook for a further 4-5 minutes until the mussels open (discard any that do not open). Adjust the seasoning to taste then serve from the pan.

To make a vegetarian version omit the chorizo, prawns and mussels and replace with a selection of vegetables of your choice, such as celery, green beans, chopped tomatoes and courgette. Use vegetable stock and fry a couple of crushed garlic cloves with the onion to give extra flavour.

Word on Wine After ‘lockdown’, we are all looking forward to the remains of the summer and getting back with friends for a few bottles of wine. For me, the summer would not be complete without a nice glass of chilled rosé wine. There is now a full range of rosé wines from all over the world, from the original French Provence wines to new world rosé of New Zealand, Australia, Chile and the USA. Rosé wines are made from the full range of well-known red wine grapes. The wine is made by the skins being immediately removed after a light pressing to give the wines a pink tint. This can be from a light pink colour, often referred to as ‘blush’, to a full deep strawberry colour. The rosé that I would like to present to you comes from Lodi in California, USA and is called ‘Big Top White Zinfandel’ 2018 made for Boutinot Ltd of Cheshire. Like most easy drinking, reasonably priced wines, the wine arrives in a large container and is bottled in England. The red Zinfandel grapes have been grown in the USA since the early 1800s. It is thought that the vines were imported to the USA by George Gibbs of Long Island in 1829 and spread across the USA, to arrive in California just after the ‘Gold Rush’ in about 1852. Zinfandel is the same grape as Italy’s Primativo. The vines originated in Croatia and became popular in Southern Italy. One idea is that Italian immigrants to the USA could have also taken the vines with them as they moved across the country.

Bob Trinchero of Sutter Home launched the ‘White Zinfandel’ wine in 1972 to fill a gap in the market. In just 6 years he saw production of White Zinfandel rise from 25,000 bottles to 1.5 million a year. Using the red Zinfandel grape, the wine is produced by removing the red skins from the must almost immediately after it has been pressed, to leave a strawberry tint. All grapes have green flesh under the skin. To make dark Zinfandel red wine they leave the skins in the mix throughout fermentation. The grapes for the ‘Big Top’ wine are selected from old vines from estates around Lodi in Central California. They are lightly crushed and vinified in stainless steel tanks. To retain the fruit flavours and produce an easy drinking wine, the fermentation is stopped by chilling the wine. This produces a dark strawberry colour with the taste and aroma of strawberries and raspberry ice cream with light citrus, with a smooth, fruity off-dry finish. Ideal for a summer’s day. What Beers Did You Drink During Lockdown? The hope is that, as you are reading this, the hospitality landscape has changed from when I’m writing. For the past few months the notion of popping down to the local pub/ restaurant or tap house for a quick drink inevitably saw you carrying a plastic container for a takeout to be enjoyed at home. The Holly Bush Inn at Makeney was certainly a pub that adapted to this crisis, being the only pub locally to my knowledge to source and still be buying cask beers at a time where others were tipping theirs down the drain. A conservative approach initially, to changing their focus to off-premises consumption, ensuring social distancing was adhered to, soon saw queues around the block as word spread. Local bottle shops and off-licenses modified too. The Beer Trap, Belper, started providing a beer delivery service and Maison Du Biere in Ashbourne, a pre-order system, which changed how consumers would peruse their stock of bottles and cans across social media. I’m not sure if Pentrich Brewery had some premonition of this pandemic, but just as the restrictions were coming into place, they started canning some of their beers, something that would have taken months to plan and budget for. A brewery, which until then had always provided the sector with great cask beers, was then able to shift focus and provide beers to the ‘off’ trade. A beer that was released to celebrate 4 years of brewing, called ‘Birthdays in Isolation’, a 10% Triple IPA, probably wouldn’t have seen the light of day if Pentrich was still brewing just for the cask market. This thick, murky beer with loads of stone fruit and citrus aromas was probably one of my best beers of lockdown. Pentrich was not alone, with breweries looking at different ways to reach a different market. I’m sure, like me, most of you will have had weekly video calls with friends and a quiz would ensue. There were four of us that would get together and we would take turns in

‘getting the rounds in’. Each week we would take it in turns to source 12 beers to be shared amongst us, with the idea being that we would drink the same beer on a zoom call and discuss the merits of each. The search for good quality beers, from breweries we maybe hadn’t had many beers from before, became the challenge and made things all that much more fun. Some breweries who were initially just serving their local community soon developed a web shop and then were able to support nationwide delivery, which widened our choice. These were some of the standouts from these sessions: Tempest – All The Leaves Are Brown: This 11.2% barrel-aged brown ale was a surprise hit. Chocolate, maple and a sticky brown sugar sweetness made this just sublime. Sussex Small Batch – Zucotto Stout: A 5% raspberry, vanilla and chocolate stout which was very moreish and would make a perfect after dinner treat. Full Circle – Lake of Stars: A 4.5% pale ale; a perfect thirst quencher – citrus, grapefruit with an aroma of fresh linen on a spring morning.

Short Story Lady Ice-Cream “Not that one, it’s the wrong shape,” Vienetta snapped. “Make sure they all look like strawberries.” “But they are all strawberries.” Kelly frowned helplessly. “This is what they look like.” Kelly and her friend Marjorie had been surprised to see Vienetta Bagshott-Clamp, in a canary yellow sundress and sling back heels, climb out of her convertible at their Pick-Your-Own Strawberry field. “Look what the cat’s dragged in,” Marjorie groaned. “It’s Lady Ice-Cream. What does she want?” “I’m on my way to a garden party, all the best people will be there,” she’d smirked, tottering over to the little shed where they weighed the fruit. “I promised to bring strawberries to go with the champers.” “Just grab one of these and help yourself,” Marjorie had said, handing her a cardboard basket that she received in her manicured hands as though she was being offered a roll of toilet paper. “I can’t pick fruit in this outfit – it’s designer,” she said, as though the women couldn’t possibly understand the daily challenges she faced. “You’ll have to do it for me.” “It’s pick your own,” Marjorie had muttered, but her words fell on deaf ears; different rules applied when it came to Vienetta. Poor Kelly got the short straw. Since then she’d been following Vienetta around the strawberry field in the scorching heat, while her customer fussed over every piece of fruit Kelly put in the basket. “My friends will be astonished when I tell them I’ve picked them myself,” Vienetta said, batting away a curious butterfly. “So it’s got to look amazing.” “The basket’s full,” Kelly said wearily; she had become an expert at biting her tongue over the last half an hour. “Let’s get it weighed.” Kelly marched gratefully back to the shed where Marjorie was helping customers. Vienetta followed her, gingerly picking her way through the rows of plants. “Got everything you need?” Marjorie asked, a tight smile on her face as she put the basket on the scales. “Looks like you’ve got the best of the crop.” “There’s a bug on that top one,” Vienetta tutted,

inspecting the fruit. “I’m not paying for that, take it out.” “It’s just a little greenfly,” Kelly said. “It’ll come off when you wash them.” Vienetta looked at the two women in horror. “What do you mean, wash them?” she snapped. “You never mentioned this.” “You don’t have to if you don’t want to, do you Marjorie?” Kelly said nervously, picking the offending strawberry out of the basket and putting it to one side. The two women shook their heads vigorously. If they weren’t careful Vienetta would have them washing the fruit and hulling it too. As Vienetta handed over the cash she winced. “I’ve got a stone in my shoe,” she scowled. “From your filthy field.” “If we’d known you were coming we’d have hoovered,” Marjorie smiled. “Park yourself here and get the stone out.” She pushed a wooden crate towards Vienetta. “Wait!” Kelly cried as Vienetta sat down heavily and peeled off her shoe. “I should charge you for a pedicure,” she said tartly. After patting her foot, satisfied, she replaced the shoe and wobbled to her feet. “Luckily for you I’ve got a garden party to attend.” “Have fun!” Marjorie waved as she walked away. She stared at Vienetta’s behind, where a circle of red bloomed on her left cheek. “What’s that on her bum?” Marjorie whispered. “It’s that strawberry with the greenfly,” Kelly groaned. “She sat on it.” “That poor greenfly,” Marjorie said sadly. “Should we tell her?” “Just smile and wave,” Kelly said. “Smile and wave.” By Jackie Brewster

Exciting Car Technologies We take a look at upcoming car features that could transform the way we drive. The automotive sector is currently seeing the rise of electrification and increased autonomy, and the next few years could see manufacturers including a number of exciting technologies. We pick out some examples: Clutchless manual With the rise of hybrid and electric vehicles, the need for a manual gearbox is fading, though it may live on in some form. In 2017, Toyota showcased the GR HV Sports Concept, which had automatic transmission but left an H-pattern shifter in place to retain driver engagement. Don’t be surprised to see such a feature in a near-future production car. Enhanced autonomous technology Production cars already use autonomous technology, many for safety reasons – such as allowing cars to detect vehicles ahead of them slowing or stopping. In the next five years, we expect further developments. It’s unlikely that we’ll see production cars that are capable of piloting themselves on public roads, but there’s a good chance that many production vehicles will be able to take over more control from the driver than is currently available. Vehicle-to-grid charging Launched in 2018, vehicle-to-grid charging (V2G) allows electric cars to give back electricity to the grid. Essentially electric cars ‘talk’ to the grid, detecting when energy demand is at its highest. We expect this to properly come to fruition over the next five years. Wireless electric car charging A major drawback of electric car ownership is the charging process – it can be complicated, and involve heavy and unwieldy cables going from vehicle to plug.

Wireless electric car charging allows a vehicle to drive over a ‘pad’ capable of transmitting charge wirelessly from the mains to the car’s batteries. Just driving over a section of road or parking space fitted with the technology will allow you to charge an electric car. Speed limiters in cars From 2022, all new cars sold in the EU and the UK will be fitted with automatic speed-limiting technology that detects the speed limit of a road and prevents gradual acceleration beyond that point. However, pressing the throttle harder with the limiter active will allow the car to push beyond it, though keep in mind breaking the speed limit is an illegal act. Breathalyser technology built-in 2022 will also see the infrastructure for breathalyser technology built into all new cars. This won’t require every driver to take a breath test before using their vehicle but convicted drink-drivers would have to breathe into a device — with the engine unable to be started if they are over the limit or do not attempt the test. Digital mirrors Digital mirrors are expected to be more widespread and replace traditional mirrors with cameras located on the wings of the car. These relay an image onto small screens placed at either side of the cockpit. You get a clearer picture of the area behind you and there are efficiency benefits through decreased drag. We’ve already seen it on cars like the Audi e-Tron and Honda e, but it’s likely to be adopted in other vehicles soon. By James Baggott

Health Get Moving for Mental Health During the lockdown, with so little choice of things to do, it may well be that a walk round the block became part of your daily routine. That should have reminded you of the physical and mental benefits of fresh air and moving around. But as lockdown eases, if you find you have reverted to form and even the very word ‘exercise’ makes you want to retreat to the sofa to binge watch Netflix, we hear you! It really doesn’t have to be a chore though. Any type of exercise is useful, as long as it suits you and you do enough of it. It should be something you enjoy or it will be hard to find the motivation to do it regularly. As the saying goes: necessity is the mother of invention and the last couple of months have been amazing for introducing exercise that doesn’t involve being in a gym. From martial arts in the garden, online yoga and cycling to just that brisk walk round the block. Exercise to boost your mood Aerobic exercises, where your heart rate is elevated, have been shown to help depression. They reduce your levels of cortisol (AKA the ‘stress hormone’). You could try jogging (using the Couch to 5K app to keep yourself motivated), a virtual exercise class or just dancing in your kitchen. Exercise to ease anxiety Yoga and pilates can have a direct impact on your nervous system, helping to calm it down and ease anxiety. Some studies have shown that yoga can also be beneficial for tackling depression, alleviating stress and even reducing pain and blood pressure. Exercise in nature According to a study by the University of Exeter, spending two hours a week in nature is good for both your mental and physical wellbeing. This could mean your local park, a field or even doing an outdoor circuits session in your garden. Virtual exercise classes Throughout lockdown Joe Wicks ran fun, energetic PE classes daily at 9am on his YouTube channel – and these aren’t just for children! Although these are no longer daily he’s still doing several a week and you can still access all the previous ones on his YouTube channel, as well as other workouts including cardio, HIIT sessions, abs, or some created for seniors.

Exercising with a health condition If you’re worried that exercise might make an existing health condition worse, do speak to your GP. Finally the NHS offers more than 20 instructor-led workouts at www.nhs.uk/conditions/nhs-fitness-studio, starting from just 10 minutes long. There’s even a 30-minute workout using your sofa! Keep motivated Make a note of how you feel before and after your workout. Try rating your anxiety and mood out of 10 and see whether the workout has had a positive effect.

This Peak District walk starts from the attractive village of Winster. It then explores Stanton Moor with its standing stones and other points of interest, before continuing via the village of Birchover with its unusual attraction and Robin Hood’s Stride back to the start.

3. Go straight over and continue to Barn Farm. Excellent signage diverts you around the farm and leads you up to Lees Road (grid ref. SK245625). You now enter Stanton Moor. Follow the main path for a short way until the first major junction. Go right here and descend to a fence with an interesting outcrop of rock on the other side. (This can be accessed via a stile and offers a good view down into the Derwent valley.) 4. Turn left along the fence and follow this path as it heads along the edge of Stanton Moor to reach a tower built in tribute to Earl Grey (of tea fame) who made a major contribution to the Reform Bill. 5. Cross over the stile and turn right. The path leads you to The Nine Ladies stone circle, one of over sixty Bronze Age sites on this moor. The single stone standing on its own on the other side is called The King Stone.

The Route 1. The walk starts from the village of Winster with its old Market Hall, the first property to be purchased by the National Trust, standing in the main street (Grid ref. SK241605). Standing in the street containing the Bowling Green Pub and with the Market Hall on your immediate right, take the footpath signed to Birchover by the shop. This leads down to fields. Do follow the footpath signs and not what appears to be the way ahead. 2. Following the path, the route descends to a small valley. Bear right at the first footpath junction to climb out of the valley. At the next junction bear right again into a wood. The path climbs through the wood and turns sharp left to reach Clough Lane (Grid ref. SK243617).

6. Leave The Nine Ladies via the path to the south. This crosses Stanton Moor. Turn right at the path junction (Grid ref SK246628). This path takes you past the Cork Stone with footholds cut into its side. The path terminates at a road. Turn left and proceed down the road passing the entrance to a quarry. Just before the corner, turn right onto a footpath by the car park. This drops down behind the houses of Birchover ending at a road opposite The Druid Inn. 7. Walk down the lane to the left of the Inn and look out for a very narrow path at the end of the Inn’s car park. This leads up to Rowtor Rocks. The Reverend Thomas Eyre, a local vicar, carved these rocks to form caves, steps, armchairs and rooms. A word of warning – there are many holes in the path and unguarded edges that could lead to a fall.

9. Exploration complete, return to the main road and turn right up Dudwood Lane. This is part of the Limestone Way, which will be followed for much of the way back to Winster. The lane climbs steadily. Go straight across at the first road junction (Chadwick Hill) and continue along the lane. On your left there are views across much of the route covered so far. Reaching another road (Grid ref SK236600), turn left. On the other side of the main road, locate the signed footpath leading east. 10. Take this footpath and after approximately 200-300 metres look out for an unsigned path on your right. The only clue is a stile. Cross this and descend the field exiting onto a road (note the exit stile is adjacent to the building in the bottom right hand corner of the field). Turn right along this road passing many attractive cottages. Eventually the road bears left and leads you back down to the Market Hall and the centre of Winster. Please maintain social distancing whilst walking.

8. Return to the lane; go past the church. At the next junction go straight ahead on the track. When the track doubles back on itself, go straight ahead and contour across the hillside with woods to your left. To your right, across the valley, you can see the outcrops that form Robin Hood’s Stride. From here they look like the roof and chimney of a cottage. Take the next path on your right (Grid ref SK230620) and descend to the road. Turn left along the road taking care as it can be quite busy. After 200 metres turn right up the track and continue towards Robin Hood’s Stride. It is worth exploring a little perhaps visiting the Hermit’s cave located on a side path that goes to your right.

Wellness Matters Ageing Is Not What You Think “Age is a hell of a price to pay for wisdom” George Carlin. This impacts on everyone and not just a person of a certain age… We all seem to accept that ageing is associated with chronic disease, decreased mobility, increased aches & pain, wrinkles, greying hair and generalised frailty. But it doesn’t need to be this way! The actual cause of ageing is multifaceted. Understanding these facets and making changes now can disrupt the ageing cycle significantly. There is no such thing as growing old gracefully. What actually causes ageing? Scientific evidence shows that reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals are involved in many diseases and result in ageing. ROS is formed as a natural by-product of normal metabolism, caused by injured cells (strenuous activity or injury), foods (the wrong types), environment, oxygenation of cell tissues and various fatty acids in our cells. Free radicals occur during a chemical reaction within our bodies to sustain life, which occurs daily. These free radicals are highly unstable; they whizz around within our cells stealing electrons from cell membranes until they are able to restore their electromagnetic balance. Free radicals burn like gunpowder, starting a chain reaction which damages an innumerable number of atoms. The oxidative stress caused by free radicals spreads from targeted to non-targeted cells where they transfer their excess energy to membranes and cells. They are specifically drawn to DNA, which is where the damage occurs most. Furthermore, stress, anxiety, depression and menopause reduce our toxic threshold leading to a further reduction in metabolic function and disruption of homeostasis (the delicate balance in our body) resulting in cell senescence. Each cell can only divide for a finite amount of time before going into senescence. The above conditions accelerate cell division, in turn accelerating depletion of your DNA pool. If unchecked, the damage that occurs includes dysfunctional skin, abnormal production of melanin, age spots, decreased cell turnover, wrinkling, dryness, sagging skin, long term disease and tumours. It furthermore destroys collagen,

elastin and results in thread veins. Now that is growing old disgracefully! Gardening Watery Delight

A pond is a great long-term addition to a garden but plan it before you start digging! Where to put a pond? Keep clear of deciduous trees; their leaves clog up the pond and cause methane gas to be released as they rot, which can be lethal to fish and pond wildlife. Conversely, extremely sunny, hot spots will increase the likelihood of pond algae problems. Choose a level site to minimise the amount of soil that needs to be shifted to create it. How to choose a liner There are three main types of pond liner: a pre-formed rigid liner (mid-price but shapes are limited); plastic available by the metre (cheap but may only last three or four years); and butyl (costly, but lasts around 30 years, and allows for any size and shape you require). What shape? Create a simple shape to use less butyl liner and underlay, and make it easier to install. Always use underlay as this dramatically reduces the risk of leaks due to liner damage. Either buy it or use old carpet underlay for flexible liners, while plenty of sand works well for rigid liners. What size? A larger pond is generally easier to maintain and should be at least 45cm (18in) deep to minimise algae and to maximise the range of plants you can grow. Adjust the pond levels at the edges before laying edging material. Edges must fit snugly in the hole to reduce the chances of damage – pack dry sand or garden soil into any gaps. Large, rounded stones at the pond edge help animals to climb out and help disguise liner edges, plus reduce the amount of soil accidentally entering the pond.

Have a gently sloping beach at one edge to allow hedgehogs, birds and other non-aquatic creatures to drink and bathe, and get out easily if they fall in. Build in some ‘shelves’ at the sides, wide enough to hold pots or pond baskets to allow for aquatics and marginals (bog-loving plants) needing shallower water. A pond should be filled with rain water, but mains water can be used if allowed to stand for a week or so before adding plants or fish. What to plant? Buy healthy and hardy pond and marginal plants that are able to withstand winter temperatures. Check the depth of water they require and how big they’ll grow. Make it safe Make sure that you explain the potential dangers of ponds to children, and consider waiting a year or so if they are too small to understand. Avoid steep, straight sides and have a graduated exit so it’s easy to get out of should someone or something fall in. Consider fitting a strong, galvanised metal mesh over the entire surface. It must be strong enough to bear a child’s weight, with a small mesh size that small feet cannot go through. The Diary of a Local Mum Lockdown Lessons Well. You never know what life’s got in store for you, do you? This time last year, if any of us had been given a glimpse into the future we’d have assumed we had a faulty crystal ball. Even Hollywood blockbusters don’t come up with storylines as far-fetched as this reality. Imagine sitting the kids down in January and telling them they wouldn’t be going to school after March? That they’d only be allowed out of the house once a day to exercise? That they wouldn’t be sitting SATs, GCSEs or A-levels? That sports, clubs, holidays and birthday parties would all be cancelled, and they wouldn’t be able to see friends or family they didn’t live with…? Well, I think they’d have quite understandably thrown a humongous paddy – and everyone else would have joined in! This horrific virus has torn through the world upending life as we know it. Lives have been changed and sadly many, many lives have been lost. But there have been lessons learned and some positives to emerge from this situation. Firstly, I have learned just how adaptable kids are. As mentioned, if we’d had forewarning of this situation it would’ve felt like the worst thing imaginable but, actually, when you’ve just got to get on with it, that’s what you do. From Day 1 ‘lockdown’ felt like a project and the kids attacked it with gusto, finding things to do and ways to entertain themselves, and each other. And it’s been ok… in fact, it’s been more than ok. Yes, there have been tears but lockdown has, on occasion, been pretty good fun. Stepping off the hamster-wheel has meant we’ve had time to try new things or rediscover old activities – old board games have come out, we’ve cooked and eaten together, walked, talked, exercised, danced and laughed, enjoying precious moments that would, in a busier life, have passed us by… oh, and the dog’s discovered that he LOVES Scalextric! Of course, ‘Lockdown Learning’ has also occurred in the more literal sense… homeschooling. That’s been quite an education, in many ways! Schools had to adapt with very little warning, offering their lessons

online. Parents were suddenly thrown into a new role, supporting this home learning. For the first part of lockdown I wasn’t working so I was free to ‘help’ them … and I use this term in the loosest sense, because most of the time I was just learning alongside them. And I learned A LOT! By the end of each day my little brain was fried with all the new information, while the kids took it all in their stride. This was a lesson for me in just how exhausting learning is – and how interesting it can be, too. As I resumed working, from home, the challenges of homeschooling became greater as both the laptop and my attention were in high demand. But, again, the kids coped admirably, timetabling their work, sharing devices and getting on with their new ‘normal’. As we’ve adapted, homeschooled, baked, crafted, played and acquired new skills such as hairdressing (through necessity) and playing the ukulele (by choice) … we’ve also learned other life lessons. Ones that, I think, will stay with us: We’ve learned about what’s really important to us. The things we’ve really missed haven’t necessarily been the things we thought we couldn’t live without! We’ve learned a new-found respect for many people in society – those with jobs that kept the world turning. We’ve learned how exercise can boost our mood, thanks to Joe Wicks and his energetic morning workouts, and how even when you’re feeling blue leaping about your living room can put a smile on your face. We’ve learned to appreciate a slower pace of life and find happiness and enjoyment in the simple things. We’ve learned how much the people in our lives matter. Mostly we’ve learned not to take anything for granted – you never know what’s round the corner. Value your health, your freedom and your happiness and hug the ones you’re allowed to touch with all your might. Stay safe.

Local History L. du Garde Peach I came across an article recently which took me back to my childhood and the hours listening to Children’s Hour on the BBC Home Service. I was reminded of Uncle Mac, Toytown and Larry the Lamb, descriptive nature rambles with Romany and exciting plays by Rosemary Sutcliffe, and more particularly, L. du Garde Peach. Dr Lawrence du Garde Peach, a lecturer and writer, was born in Sheffield in 1890. Educated at Manchester Grammar School, he went on to graduate from Manchester University. In the First World War he served in the Manchester Regiment and in military intelligence. After the war he took a PhD at Sheffield University and became a lecturer at the University College of the South West of England in Exeter, where he was central in the campaign to secure university status for the college. His freelance journalism became more lucrative than teaching and so he resigned his university post and took up full-time literary work. Interested in the developing field of playwriting for the amateur stage, Dr Peach wrote several series of one- and two-act plays, often with a historical theme and tailored for specific groups such as women’s institutes, youth groups and schools. He also became interested in the potential of broadcasting, and he is chiefly remembered as one of the pioneers of radio drama, with the BBC producing over 400 of his plays. From 1923 he wrote numerous plays of dramatised history and biography aimed to please young listeners, particularly in Children’s Hour. Dr Peach and his wife moved to Great Hucklow in Derbyshire’s Peak District where his father had become Unitarian minister. This gave him the opportunity to pursue his idea of forming a group of local people into a repertory company capable of performing established plays as well as those written by himself, and The Great Hucklow Village Players theatre company came into being in 1927.

In the early days plays had to be performed in a large recreational room in the Unitarian children’s holiday home in the village, but shortly before the Second World War Dr Peach purchased an old smelting shed which had belonged to the lead-miners of Mill Dam Mine, and converted it into a small theatre. It was a successful venture from the beginning, forming part of the village drama movement which was warmly supported by Dr Peach. He chaired the drama committee of Derbyshire Rural Community Council from 1924, and promoted amateur theatricals in the monthly magazine Derbyshire Countryside which he edited from 1931 to 1948. The Great Hucklow Players were so popular that little publicity was needed to ensure house full notices. Even the temporary closure of the little theatre during the war did not damage its appeal, and it continued until 1971. The theatre, props and scenery were auctioned in 1975, and Sheffield Scouts bought the building and converted it into a holiday centre. In the mid-fifties Dr Peach was commissioned by the educational publishers Wills and Hepworth to write a number of short illustrated volumes on historical subjects for school children. He obliged with over twenty titles which were published in the successful and popular “Ladybird” series, dealing in a lively way with topics such as Roman Britain, Florence Nightingale, Captain Cook and Charles Dickens. He also wrote an account of the theatre at Great Hucklow in 1952 entitled Twenty-Five Years of Play Producing, 1927-1952. In 1964 he was made an honorary DLitt of Sheffield University and in 1972 he received an OBE for his services to literature. Dr Peach died at his home in Foolow on 31 December, 1974.

Green Tips Commuter Cycling UK transport secretary Grant Shapps announced a £2 billion plan in May to boost cycling. Clearly, the ongoing need for social distancing is part of this drive, but cleaner air, better health and less time wasted in traffic are of great benefit to us all and the environment. Here are a couple of ideas which might make you seriously consider a bike as your commuter vehicle of choice. An electric bike looks like a normal bike, and can use cycle paths, but when you come to a hill the motor kicks in and gives you an extra push. You still have to pedal, but it’ll save that extra exertion that has you arriving at work red-faced and sweaty. Tubeless (puncture-proof) tyres will transform your cycling. These have a special sealant inside

which sets on exposure to air. Should you pick up a puncture – a hole not a gash – the escaping air forces the liquid to the surface and seals the hole. Nine times out of ten you won’t even be aware of it. You might be one of the lucky few who has showers at work. If you don’t, slow down for the last five minutes of your ride so that you are already cool when you stop. Get insured! That’s your bike against theft, you against injury, and pedestrians and car owners against you having a mishap on your journey.

Right at Home Is It Safe to Receive Care and Support in a Covid-19 World? It is widely documented that the number of people accessing health services for non-covid-19 related conditions has dramatically dropped. Public Health England and the NHS are encouraging people to seek assistance via normal channels for all health concerns and the message is ‘the NHS is open’. The repercussions of delayed treatment for conditions is yet to be seen, as are the mental health and wellbeing repercussions of isolation. It is widely accepted that isolation and a lack of contact with other humans is bad for most people’s health. The most at risk group for loneliness are, however, those that are most vulnerable to the Coronavirus. So, in a Covid-19 world, how can you receive safe care and support in your home? Home care providers, such as Right at Home, have always trained carers in infection control and the safe use of PPE. Incorrect use can be as infectious (if not more-so) than no PPE and all carers are trained in the correct process of “donning and doffing” PPE. Covid-19 has increased the level of PPE that Right at Home introduced to include:

• Carers digitally recording their temperature before every care call • Covid-19 testing kits available at all times • Fluid repellent face masks for all care calls • Clear face visors for all care calls • Increased handwashing and hand sanitiser protocols • Coronavirus antibacterial disinfectant provided for all care calls • Aprons and appropriate gowns for care calls As well as increased and appropriate PPE, it is important to keep the number of visitors to a minimum. Care providers such as Right at Home, who match carers to the needs of their clients, are able to create small teams of carers for each client group, reducing the social circle and risk of wider infection. For individuals with increased health needs, there is now an obvious fear of going into nursing/residential homes leading to an increasing demand for ‘live-in care’. This allows the individual to remain in their own home and to have one carer live with them 24/7. This is a cost-effective alternative to a nursing home whilst providing the safest and most person-centred care. So, in a Covid-19 world, it is more harmful to ignore your health and wellbeing and you are encouraged to reach out for the right care and support.

Bereavement Matters Things are settling down into a “new normal” for us and for our clients as the easing of the coronavirus rules allows more traditional funerals to begin taking place again. As with many businesses, at the peak of the epidemic it was all about minimising the amount of time we needed to spend face to face with people; we’re now encouraging clients to come into the office to discuss arrangements, but it’s still just two at a time and by appointment only. However, we’ve still got the ability to arrange everything remotely for those who prefer not to come into the office, or if it’s not practical for them to do so. We’re also able to use our limousines again, having fitted Perspex screens which separate the driver from the passengers in the rear. Some churches are now starting to offer funeral services for small numbers of people, although not all of them will

be able to because a lot of their volunteers are elderly and unable to do the vital jobs they used to do before and after a funeral. We’ve dealt with families facing some really tough circumstances - husbands and wives who didn’t feel able to attend their partner’s funeral because of the risk to their health, or those unable to travel who had no choice but to have an unattended cremation. We did all we could in terms of taking photos and videos to share with them, but it was tough to know that there was someone, somewhere, wishing they could be there to say goodbye. It’s been a tough time and I’m so proud of my staff for the way they’ve coped with our changing role and all the challenges we’ve had to deal with. It may be a while before we see large numbers of people attending funerals again – even if restrictions are eased, I think this pandemic will leave its mark on people’s attitude to attending gatherings for some time. Some of the things that have been happening in the last few months – neighbours coming out on the street to say goodbye, and webcasting of funeral services, are likely carry on for some time.
