Hello readers

You may recall earlier in the year that I wrote about a long weekend we’d spent in Krakow, Poland to celebrate our friends’ birthdays. Well, as a birthday surprise for me, Roy treated me to a weekend away to another Polish city called Wroclaw with the same friends (they loved Krakow as much as we did). Wroclaw is only a 2 hour flight from East Midlands Airport. Whilst I wasn’t too happy at having to get up at 2.30am for our 6.30am flight, it was worth it after we landed in Poland and took the short 20 minute transfer to our apartments. Our one-bedroomed apartments were superb with great furnishings and facilities (including a dishwasher and washing machine). They were also surprisingly inexpensive, considering they were only a minute’s walk to the main central square of Wroclaw and about the same to walk in the opposite direction to the beautiful River Odra where we took a boat trip from one of the riverside bars. Wroclaw is a friendly city with a very laid-back vibe. Your money goes a long way while you’re there too which is always a bonus! Wroclaw is a wonderful place for people of all ages. There are approximately 500 little bronze gnomes dotted around the city – and whilst you’d think that gnome-spotting would be a past-time for the under-15s, we found ourselves getting excited every time we spotted a new one! Whilst a lot of the old town with its Gothic spires and Baroque palaces is pedestrianised, you can easily download an app and hire a scooter to get around too. Another great way of seeing the city is to take a tour on an electric golf-buggy-type vehicle. All-in-all, we had a fabulous weekend with fabulous weather. I’d definitely return. Check out our apartments by googling ‘2/3 Apartments Old Town Wroclaw’. Before I sign off until autumn, I’d like to thank The Bulls Head at One of Wroclaw’s cheeky Denby Village for providing little gnomes – sat outside an Ice this issue’s crossword prize – a Cream Parlour. 2 course Sunday lunch for 2 people. You can find this in its regular spot on page 6.

Business & Professional

Money Matters:

“I Was Talking to My Mate Down the Pub, He Said…” I’m often asked what I like most about being a Financial Adviser and there are many things. (The odd one when I wish I wasn’t one, too!). However, one of the best reasons is the job satisfaction. Especially when I see the ‘lightbulb moment’ when the penny drops with a client who realises they don’t have to worry so much about retiring and have enough to live off comfortably in their lives after work has finished. Naturally, people worry about how they will make ends meet or continue to live a life retired that is more than just an existence. A large part of my role is to help people understand their finances and this often involves an education process and explaining details at levels that a client comprehends. I point out that people live off their net pay and not their gross or ‘top line’. Seems obvious, but clients think they are trying to replace 100% of the gross salary. Once this starts to dawn on them, we focus on the other current living costs which can include running 2 cars for example or a mortgage, of which neither may be due once retired. A further breakdown may reveal they are saving sums of money religiously each month into pensions or savings which will also need to be removed from living costs post-retirement. For all the criticism of the State Pension, more often than not the State Pension covers core living costs such as energy, water, Council Tax plus putting food on the

table. The State Pension wasn’t designed to cover holidays and hobbies. Once this sinks in then the client realises that often their private and company pensions plus investments can be used towards the luxuries such as the Sky TV, holidays, hobbies and other discretionary costs. It’s then that their shoulders soften and a sigh breaks out as they feel relieved – they can manage to continue to live, not just exist. That’s the moment; the part of the job I like the most. The ‘man down the pub’ can put all sorts of fear into the ears that listen but, when I see that magic moment when the clients realise they can afford to live and afford to retire, my smile breaks out and I feel good for them too. So, have a chat with your Financial Adviser rather than the doom and gloom of the ‘mate down the pub’. We can probably replace that frown with a smile of relief.

Just a Thought... Undercover Agent for the Snooze Another of those motivational, pithy, ginseng-wielding slogans zoomed into my life at double espresso shot pace recently. It read ‘Live life to the max, you can sleep when you are dead.’ It stopped me completely in my tracks, which is ironic really as I’m sure it was meant to make me leap into some Lycra and fist pump the air with enthusiasm. If I were to push through every day, utilising every bit of my energy (which is generally that of a slightly animated sloth due to a chronic illness) just so I could Tweet #livingmybestlife, then my ‘time to sleep’ would certainly be exponentially expedited! It isn’t just me though; I know so many people who feel they should be ‘doing’ more. They feel

they need to take their kids to more clubs, go out to more social occasions, get a promotion, get a better body. Why? What is our strange and profound fascination with always wanting, doing, showing or needing more? Really it isn’t about us at all; it’s about what we think others think of us. I’d like to adapt our somewhat fustian phrase to appeal to a wider audience, a more realistic audience with the hope that they will feel a little lighter about life and a lot better about themselves. My slogan reads, ‘Live life as fully as YOU wish, YOU can sleep when YOU are tired.’ It may not sell t-shirts but I think it would look right at home on a pillow case. So rest easy my friends – your pace is just fine.

Life List It’s All Right For Some! When faced with delayed pensions, jobs stolen by robots, and endless reality television (we were lucky with The Family in 1974!), you can see why the younger generation thinks that we’ve had the best of it. Even their technology has helped us to catch up on decades of our favourite radio and TV programmes. It wasn’t always that way though, as they sometimes need to be reminded. Here’s a list of conversation starters, with just a hint of exaggeration. Our childhood was so deprived... The school dinners were leftovers – from the dinners at other schools. At Christmas we each got an orange painted stone.

We had a single pair of socks between three of us – a brown one and a blue one. Our Father Christmas letter simply read: all donations gratefully received. We made all our own decorations out of last year’s decorations. We glued pencil shavings together to make a new pencil. It was a treat to be sat outside the pub with a lemonade. As dad was a keen gardener, we had to follow the rag and bone horse until we’d collected a bagful. We were only allowed to stay up late to watch programmes we couldn’t understand. All the kids in class knew you’d redecorated by the cover on your exercise book.

We were told that the radio only worked at teatime.

Every child had to learn fractions to cope with mum’s Green Shield Stamps.

We shared a toilet with the municipal baths.

Lifestyle

Curiouser and Curiouser… My curiosity can be piqued by all sorts of things. If you are trying to find specific information it can become quite overwhelming. There is a vast amount of knowledge about all sorts of topics out there. For example, if you type ‘how to boil an egg’ into Google, there are around 670,000,000 results including 127,000,000 videos! And I thought there was only one way to boil an egg... If you want to discover something new, a trip to the library can help. The children’s section has plenty of books that explain all sorts of things, in simpler terms. I can learn how to draw dinosaurs, how GPS works and what it’s like to be a firefighter. This information doesn’t always go in, however, and I am still at a loss as to how most technology works. There is a reason I’ve spent a lot of time in the children’s section though. I am determined not to pay the accidental fine accrued on my own library account... It just means I’m stuck with the kids’ books, so I’m learning all kinds of things thanks to my daughter’s library card and her need to read books about Pokémon. According to my research on the internet, October 9th is International Curious Events Day. Apparently nobody is sure who invented it, or when, but that just adds to its curious nature. So, what to do on a day like this? Well, there are certainly plenty of curious events out there for you to ponder. You could research crop circles, annoy people by commenting about the moon landing being faked, or take a trip to the Bermuda triangle. When Alice was in Wonderland she was minding her own business when a white rabbit piqued her curiosity. She followed it down a rabbit hole and ended up on an intriguing adventure filled with many curious events.

1616

But why do we need curiosity? It is important for our development. If we didn’t have curiosity, we wouldn’t have any motivation to explore different things or develop our knowledge. When we are interested in something, our brain engages further and releases dopamine. Associated with rewarding experiences, it encourages us to seek more, thus keeping our interest and helping us to focus and retain information more successfully. So, enjoy being curious and see where it leads. If there’s something you’ve always wondered about then today is the day to jump down the rabbit hole and follow your curiosity. Unless you are a cat, I suppose...

Travel Winnipeg: Canada’s Gateway to the West On the edge of the prairies, Winnipeg is one of the sunniest cities in Canada, multicultural, vibrant and the capital of Manitoba. Named ‘Muddy Waters’ after the big lake out of town, it is located at the confluence of the Red River and the smaller Assiniboine where, before the Europeans arrived, the First Nations had been trading for thousands of years. Times have changed but set in acres of greenery, the ‘Forks’ remain a popular meeting place. In this National Historic Site, converted warehouses and new buildings beckon with craft shops and gleaming stores, al fresco cafés and a convivial market hall serving food from all over the world. Here’s the Old Spaghetti Factory, there’s a rail carriage full of Victorian candy, an art exhibition or the observation tower for stunning city views. Down by the water, wild flowers wave in the breeze, Canadian geese peck undisturbed and locals stroll quietly along the river or meditate under the trees, inspired by a painting or a poem on the back of a lonely seat. There’s bright sunshine in summer, dazzling ice in winter for skating on a rink or on the river trails used by commuters on their way to work. On the northern bank of the Assiniboine, the grand Legislative Building is topped by a golden statue of Hermes, the god of trade, while around the corner, close to the Forks, Winnipeg claims the only museum in the world fully dedicated to human rights. In an innovative spiralling building inspired by mountains, clouds and prairies, twelve galleries lead up to the Tower of Hope, rising high above the city and the Red River spanned by the Esplanade Riel. Honouring Manitoba’s founder and Métis leader, this iconic pedestrian bridge connects the Forks to the French Quarter, a lovely relaxing place

with early 1900s facades, restaurants, pastry shops and the rebuilt St Boniface cathedral, Mother Church of Western Canada. Equally enticing are Little Italy, Chinatown and the cool Osborne Village, well known for street art and ethnic eateries. Meanwhile, in the south-west, the Assiniboine Park Zoo is a treat for animal lovers, its highly praised conservation project caring for almost 200 species on 80 acres of ground from pools and enclosures to dens and rugged areas. Spot a rare snow leopard or red panda, look out for reindeer, Arctic fox, yak, tiger, camels, snakes, poisoned dart frogs, butterflies and birds such as the colourful scarlet ibis, and much more. But, most breathtaking, is the ‘Journey to Churchill’, exhibiting the different habitats of North Manitoba and – in the best natural environment – looking after polar bears whose life would otherwise be threatened. Some are orphaned cubs, others fully-grown creatures who acquired a taste for human flesh. Also, loved by everyone in the park area, is the statue of Lieutenant Harry Colebourn and the young bear he rescued, calling her Winnie after Winnipeg, his Canadian home, and who was the inspiration for the legendary character of Winnie-the-Pooh. Pauline Latham OBE MP In the summer, I was pleased to visit and open the newly refurbished Railway Hotel on King Street in Belper. The pub closed to have a £270,000 refurbishment and has been transformed into a great traditional pub specialising in craft and cask ales as well as a large selection of gins. The pub Opening the newly refurbished Railway pub, in Belper Opening the newly refurbished Railway pub, is owned by in Belper Star Pubs and Bars which, in 2018, invested £44 million into its pubs. I was invited to cut the ribbon to open the newly refurbished pub and it was fun being taught how to pull the perfect pint! I was delighted to offer my congratulations to Soi Kitchens from Milford, on the A6, who have won the first runner up place in the prestigious Tiffin Cup. The Tiffin Cup is an Soi Kitchens, with their prestigious Soi Kitchens, with their award prestigious award annual British competition to find the best South Asian restaurant in the United Kingdom. Nominees are put forward by their MPs and, having visited Soi Kitchens when it first opened, I thought they were the perfect choice. One restaurant from every region is then shortlisted and invited to participate in the Grand Final cook-off event held in the House of Commons and is judged by MPs and guest celebrities, with the proceeds going to charity. This year the guest celebrity was Ainsley Harriot. I am proud that a restaurant in my constituency has done so well, particularly as it is a relatively new business and I look forward to seeing their business grow over the coming years.

Citizen Award ItBritish was my privilege to nominate Siobhan Fennell for the British Citizen Award and I was delighted that she received this prestigious award. Siobhan is the founder of ‘Accessible Belper’ and works tirelessly to educate the local community in Belper about disabled needs. Despite Siobhan’s own health difficulties, she works incredibly hard to raise awareness of accessibility, inclusivity, and diversity within the community. The award is all about doing extraordinary things in the local community and Siobhan is an inspiration to us all.

In Parliament, I was pleased to meet with The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, an organisation which does such amazing work across the country. They help blind and partially sighted people through the provision of guide dogs, mobility and other rehabilitation services and allows people with difficulties with their sight a greater sense of independence and companionship. It is important that guide dogs are allowed to access all areas as they provide a lifeline to people and they need to be able to support their handlers in all circumstances. The adorable dogs, which included some young puppies, were extremely well behaved as they met many different MPs. Finally, I hold regular meetings with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and, if you happen to be having a clear-out, I am aware that they are short of donations of good quality clothing and bric-a-brac in their Belper and Sadler Gate shops. If you ever need my with The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in Meeting with The Guide Dogs assistance in my role as your Meeting Parliament for the Blind Association in local MP with an issue that Parliament you have not been able to resolve yourself, please email pauline.latham.mp@parliament.uk or call 01332 676679.

And Another Thing... Tom and the Man Who Came to Dinner (Part 2) Ken, my oldest friend (who had invited himself to stay chez Hughes), was trying to be as unobtrusive as possible. To make himself scarce during the day, he would either nurse a pint down The Old Paraffin Lamp, go for a long walk, or sit in the library and annoy the librarian with requests for obscure titles about fine art. After a week and a half into Ken’s three day stay, the novelty value of a house guest began to wear rather thin on Sarah (My Dearly Beloved), who became prone to tugging at my hem, pulling me to one side and saying, “Tom, we can’t just keep him here forever.” “He’s not here forever, he’s just couch surfing.” “Well he can go and surf somewhere else, I’ve had enough. He hasn’t even got a job.” “The thing is, Ken doesn’t really ‘do’ jobs.” “Oh doesn’t he now? Well I don’t really ‘do’ bed and breakfast, OK?” At which point, in sauntered Ken carrying the carpet sweeper, and staring at the rug in the hall. “Well that’s another job out of the way – anything to help.” Sarah barged past. “I’m going.” “Anywhere nice, Sarah dear?” “Not really, I’m going to work!” (Slam) Ken, looking hurt, examined the Ewbank. I decided that certain things needed pointing out to our house guest. “Ken, old chum, the thing is, not that we don’t love you being here…” “How kind, because I love being here.” “That’s lovely but…” Ken, pinny in hand, looked at me anxiously. “But, well you haven’t got a job and well, we thought by now, you see the thing is, my friend Barry has a building company and he’s looking for labourers and I’ve had a word and well, you can actually start tomorrow.” Aghast, Ken’s knees gave way as he leaned against the occasional table for support.

“Listen, those hessian backed rugs weighed a ton. Anyway, I can’t work on a building site. It’ll…stop me looking for a job. Tom, why don’t we talk all this over in The Lamp?” Three hours later and all seemed well with the world. Ken was in a good mood as we both became lachrymose, reminiscing about our salad days. Unfortunately, the return from our bacchanalian reverie coincided with Sarah’s half day. Leaning on me for support, my rheumy-eyed pal looked on in wonder as half-closed suitcases began flying past our bemused gaze and onto the front path. “Listen here, Bootsy and Snudge – if you think I’m letting you two live high on the hog while I’m slaving away you can forget it. Here, clear out and go and find somewhere else to doss down.” Two hours later, sober, chastened and of no fixed abode, we were sat at a taxi rank considering where to rest our bones. Ken was the first to speak. “Listen Tom old darling, does this mean I’m homeless?” “Well Ken, it’s like this – if my name is on the deeds and I’ve been given my marching orders, I don’t hold out much hope for you.” After a night ringing round, I returned home to find Sarah sat at the kitchen table, nursing a cappuccino. Sheepishly, I popped my head around the corner. Without looking up Sarah asked, “Where’s Ken?” “Ken? He’s gone to stay with his Auntie Joan in Blackpool. He said it was for the best. Anyway, he bought you this.” I slid a box over to her. She looked up and lifted up the lid. “A Victoria sponge? I suppose it’s quite apt.” “I told him it was your favourite. I’ll get a knife.” “I don’t want any just yet.”

“Working on a building site? With my back?”

“Well don’t leave it too long, the date’s up today.”

“Why, what’s up with your back?”

*Note to readers – Victoria sponge is very easily cleaned off cupboard doors.

“An old industrial injury.” “Ken, you used to work in soft furnishings!”

Beer Buxton brewery’s first ever brew was mashed-in on a cold, dark, January 1st night in 2009. The brewhouse was the family garage and the batch size was about 40 litres. The resulting pale ale was consumed with relish after a tantalising wait for fermentation and bottle-conditioning to run their course. Over the following months, recipes were tweaked, altered, thrown away and revived as they searched out information online and in countless books and picked the brains of generous and far more experienced brewers. Within 12 months, following positive feedback and enthusiasm, the decision to take brewing to the next level and go ‘commercial’ was made and, for a while, Buxton ‘cuckoo-brewed’ at another local microbrewery. In January 2010, Buxton Brewery was born, brewing on a second-hand 800 litre plant in earnest. Fast-forward 9 years and the team, which has steadily grown, is now based in a 7000 square foot modern building on Staden Lane, Buxton. Its custom designed and British-built brewhouse produces around 3500 litres per brew, 3 times per week. The brewery, for me, has always been one that stands out, pushing the boundaries, making upwards of 30 distinct brews that not only have a nod to tradition, but also innovate, which means they are often imitated. Separated by a restaurant and just 10ft, Buxton Brewery has two bars in which to enjoy the fruits of their labour. The informal ‘Tap House’ caters for everyone including families, serving great food in very comfortable surroundings, whereas the ‘Cellar Bar’ is more suited to the discerning drinker. It would be quite easy for Buxton Brewery to share many

24

of the same beers in the two locations, given that the venues are essentially catering for different crowds. However, on a recent visit, it was clear that their extensive portfolio enabled them to have a wide breadth of ales in both establishments, meaning I was really spoilt for choice. One such beer – and a reason for the pilgrimage – was an Ice Cream Beer. Collaborating with Omnipollo brewery, they have created a range of beers that are topped with a slushy sorbet. I sought out the Original Vanilla Ice Cream Beer and also tried the Blueberry Frozen Yoghurt Ale and, in my opinion, the frozen ice did add something to the experience. Gimmicks aside, the first few sips I did struggle to taste the beer as I got mouthfuls of slush, which wasn’t too unpleasant in itself. The combination of the vanilla slush and the citrusy pale ale thereafter really works, adding depth and a real creaminess to the beer, which would normally be delivered by adding lactose to the brew. The yoghurt slush added a real ice-cold sharpness to what was already a relatively sour fruit beer and, on reflection, probably worked better given that the beer style was more akin to a dessert than the pale ale. With their range available in cask, keg, bottle and cans, they have all the bases covered, and with the quality being such, it’s definitely worth the effort to visit (the Transpeak bus runs pretty regularly along the A6), or seek out their beers at your local bottle shop, to try them at home.

Recipe

Leek, Aubergine and Tomato Gratins Simpler to make than a vegetarian lasagne, but just as tasty. Serve with crusty bread and green salad for a family supper. Serves: 4 Ready in: 55 minutes Ingredients: 1 large aubergine, trimmed and thinly sliced 3 tbsp olive oil 1 large leek, trimmed and halved widthways then cut into strips 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 600g bottle passata (sieved tomatoes) 2 tbsp tomato puree 2 tsp dried oregano Pinch of sugar Salt and freshly ground black pepper 200g ricotta cheese 150g mozzarella cheese, sliced

Method: Preheat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas mark 7. Brush the aubergine slices with 2 tbsp of the oil. Heat a large cast-iron griddle pan and cook the slices (in batches) for 1-2 minutes on each side until lightly charred and just tender. Set aside. Blanch the leeks in a large pan of lightly salted water for 1 minute then refresh under cold water. Drain well and pat dry with kitchen paper.

Heat the rest of the oil in a frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion and fry for 5 minutes then add the garlic and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Add the passata, tomato puree, oregano and sugar and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until reduced and thickened, stirring frequently. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Spread some of the sauce in the base of four shallow individual gratin dishes. Cover with half the aubergine and leek then spread more tomato sauce on top. Crumble over the ricotta cheese. Cover with the rest of the aubergine and remaining sauce. Top with the mozzarella and the remaining leeks. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Top with a sprinkling of grated Parmesan (or vegetarian Italian-style hard cheese) mixed with brown breadcrumbs before baking to give a lovely golden crispy crust to the finished dishes.

Word on Wine With the sun disappearing over the horizon, it is good to try and extend the summer feeling. During a wine tasting in the summer, I came across a variety that I hadn’t tasted before and I really enjoyed it. It brought the sun of Southern Italy to England during the rain of the summer. This is the ancient white grape called ‘Falanghina’. Also known as ‘Falanghina Greco’, this is an old variety which is only found in Southern Italy. The variety was used to form the base of a wine made by the Romans called ‘Falernain’. Pliny, the Roman author, reported that in the first century AD the wine quality was falling as they were producing the grapes for quantity rather than quality. It is believed that the Greeks and Romans planted the original vines back as far as 800 – 750 BC. However, Falanghina survived the next 2 millennia and had a resurgence in the 1990s in the region of Campania in the hills surrounding Naples. A good example of wine produced using the Falanghina grape is the Terredora di Paolo Falanghina 2018 from Majestic Wines. The Terredora Di Paolo winery is in the rugged landscape of Serra in Montefusco, in the Avellino region of Campania. The winery sits on the ridge line above the Sabato River and is surrounded by its own group of vineyards. It is part of the local ‘wine route’ and is among the neighbouring region of Irpinia’s 3 DOC areas. The vineyards consist of volcanic soils rich in limestone and clay and the vines survive the southern exposure to the sun during the hot summer days on windy hills, 400 – 650m above sea level.

Visit our website at www.kilburnwinecircle.weebly.com or contact me on 01159303712 for more details on our meetings and the variety of wines we will be tasting.

By David Savidge, Kilburn Wine Circle

The wine is made completely of the Falanghina grape from carefully selected vineyards of the area in early October. After the juices have settled, cool fermentation takes place using specially selected yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine is left for 3 months on its lees in the tank, which creates a vanilla hint without the use of ageing in oak barrels. This produces an easy drinking wine with intense nose and fresh crisp palate, with a well-balanced taste and a long pleasing finish. Technical Details: Grapes: 100% Falanghina Appearance: Clean – straw yellow in colour with a greenish tint. Nose / Aroma: Aromas of green apple and citrus flavours. Taste: Fresh palate with hints of vanilla; a well-balanced crisp, acidy taste with long finish. Alcohol by Volume: 13.5%. Food match: The wine goes well with any starter, soup, shellfish or vegetable dish, buffalo mozzarella and fresh

The Best Seven-seaters on Sale Today Need plenty of space, both for luggage and occupants too? You’ll want a seven-seater then. Fortunately there are plenty of options, offering a choice of body styles from a variety of brands. But which are best? Land Rover Discovery This list was always destined to feature Land Rover’s go-anywhere Discovery. As well as seven comfortable seats, its off-road technology makes it just as capable of scaling steep inclines as it is making the weekly shopping run. It’s expensive, but the Discovery comes loaded with equipment and is available with a range of engine choices. Volvo XC90 The first-generation XC90 stormed the market thanks to its rock-solid build quality and efficiency. The latest edition continues the legacy, albeit with a lot more technology and equipment. It’s also one of the safest cars on the market thanks to a raft of assistance systems. For families, there are few better options than the XC90. Seat Alhambra For the best possible passenger space, look no further than the Seat Alhambra. It may be a little outdated inside, but makes up for it with a huge amount of interior room. It’s also surprisingly good to drive, and frugal, too.

Audi Q7 The big Q7 flies the flag for premium manufacturers here, offering that top-notch driving experience you’d expect from an Audi. A high-quality interior and silky-smooth petrol and diesel engines seal the deal. There’s the all-conquering SQ7 available too – which puts many ‘normal’ performance cars to shame. Tesla Model X Representing the electric contingent is Tesla’s Model X. Spaceship-like in design, it’s a real looker out on the road. A realistic 300-mile all-electric range means it’s usable for long-distance drivers, too. Though it may be expensive to buy outright, the Model X justifies its high price tag with minimal running costs and plenty of performance. Mercedes GLS The Mercedes GLS takes the fight to the Audi Q7, and having recently been updated, packs more technology and features than ever before. A longer wheelbase than the car it replaces means there’s more space than before, and improved legroom for all occupants.

As the Alhambra is not a new model, you’re likely to find good deals at the forecourt.

The interior of the car has been vastly overhauled, with a full widescreen infotainment system helping to give the cabin a particularly high-tech feel.

Skoda Kodiaq Skoda hit the nail on the seven-seater head when it released the Kodiaq. Rock-solid build quality and incredible value for money meant that this Czech SUV enjoyed immediate popularity and has continued to do so.

Ford S-Max Though Ford’s S-Max has been around a little while now, it’s still one of the best-driving seven-seaters around, and offers genuine practicality as well. A range of frugal engines help to keep trips to the pump to a minimum, and build quality is solid.

It’s available with a range of efficient engines too, including a new performance-orientated model, the Kodiaq vRS.

A range-topping Vignale is now available, though even lower trims get a vast amount of standard equipment.

Derbyshire Walking: Horsley to Horsley Woodhouse Walk Type: Mainly footpaths through undulating farmland and woodland, small sections on quiet country roads. Distance: 4.5 miles (7.2 Km) Time: Allow 3 -3.5 hours Parking: Park sensibly in the village. Waymarking: Routeway 2 OS Map: Landranger (1:50,000) 119 Buxton & Matlock, Explorer (1;25,000) 259 Derby, Uttoxeter, Ashbourne & Cheadle Start: Begin the walk at the Coach & Horses

The Route 1. Follow Church Street through the village to St Clement’s Church. Horsley stone pillar box, the ‘home made’ pillar box, can be found at the corner of Church Street and French Lane. This was erected and brought into use on 24 December 1896. It appears today that the Horsley pillar box is unique in Derbyshire, possibly even in the country. The fountains in the village are called Sophia, situated ‘beneath the spreading Chestnut tree’, Rosamund, on the triangle opposite the Coach & Horses Inn and Blanche, standing opposite the pillar box at the top of French Lane. These are three fountains given to the village in 1864 by the Sitwell family and named after their daughters. The fountains came into use in 1864. 2. Take the footpath on the left just before the church, towards Coxbench.

5. Upon reaching the stream, cross and turn right up the hill (ignoring the stile on your right). Follow the track for approximately 400m until reaching a dry stone wall. 6. Cross the stile on your right and continue across the field heading towards the house, passing a telegraph pole. Upon reaching a wall on the left cross the stile a few metres along, to enter the woodland.

St Clement’s Parish Church dates back to 1200. The tower shows the decoration of that period and has a wonderful broach spire. Around 1800, whilst England anticipated invasion by the French under Bonaparte, many villages formed a ‘Home Guard’. The Horsley Corps, formed by squire E. S. Sitwell, gathered men from Horsley Woodhouse and district. It is believed that the damage that is evident on the side of Horsley church tower was a result of poor marksmanship by Squire Sitwell’s volunteers. 3. On entering the field, bear left and cross the field diagonally following the line of pylons through three fields. Continue downhill with the hedge on the left, then pass through the squeeze stile to reach the road. Beware of traffic on the next section. 4. Turn right at the road and take the footpath on the opposite side of the main road, approximately 100 metres along.

Health, Beauty & Fitness 7. Follow the path, keeping the wire mesh fence to the right until an old quarry is reached. Leave the fence and follow a well-defined footpath on the left. Castle of Horeston: Look carefully to see the crumbling remains on the sandstone spur. This was built by Hugh Buron in the 12th century. It passed to King John in 1198 who had it rebuilt between 1200 - 1203. He visited twice during his turbulent reign, breaking his journey from Burton Abbey to Nottingham. 8. Keep to the woodland path, with a sandstone spur on your left and the edge of the wood on your right. Continue through the wood until reaching a cart track at a T-junction. Turn right and follow the track to eventually join a road (Sandy Lane). Beware of traffic on this section. 9. Continue up the hill towards Brackley Gate. Follow the road left past a cul-de-sac and take the footpath to the left, adjacent to a farm gate. Cross the yard to a stile and carry on along the side of the wall through two fields. Ryknild Street: runs from the Roman fort at Templeborough, near Doncaster, enters Derbyshire in the north-east and runs southwards, close to Chesterfield and the Roman fort at Little Chester, now part of Derby City. It leaves the county towards the fort at Wall near Lichfield. It may well have been a road built by the Romans, indicated by the Latin word Street. 10. Descend through the field aiming for the left side of a large gap in the trees. Go through the gate and follow the field boundary to the road (Smalley Mill Road). Beware of traffic.

11. Cross the road to a stile opposite and follow the path to the footbridge. Take the path diagonally across the field to the hedge on the right. Continue uphill with the hedge on the right to reach the gate. Cross the footbridge and continue uphill with the hedge on your right to join Wood Lane (beware of traffic). 12. Turn left at the road and follow the pavement until reaching a stile on the left, approximately 150 metres past Hilltop Farm. 13. Following the path, cross the top of the field and walk diagonally over two more fields to the bridge. 14. Take the stile on the right and follow the path along the top of the field to a gap. Turn sharply right down the field to the stile and a footbridge at the bottom of the field. Turn left to a further stile in the hedge. 15. Pass through the gate and cross the footbridge. Follow the field boundary (adjacent to the golf course) through several fields. On reaching the golf club gate, bear right with the hedge on the left to the field boundary. 16. Cross the next field and take the path between the houses. On reaching the main road, turn left back to the starting point. Health, Beauty & Fitness DIBI Milano, a specialist company that combines experience with technological innovation and scientific research.

Serene Retreat Serene Retreat in Marehay always strives to offer their customers the newest developments in the beauty industry, which is why they’re bringing a whole new facial range: The Total Youth facial strengthens the structure of the skin, giving back youthfulness to the face, neck, décolletage, upper eyelids and lips; the Pure Equaliser purifies and rebalances problem and combination skin; the Filler Code facial is similar to popular injectable treatments but without needles; the Lift Creator renews, reshapes and lifts mature and sagging skin. There are new body treatments too: the Anti-Fat body treatment reduces the formation of new fat deposits, for a remodelled silhouette with more elastic skin and refined contours, while the Anti-Cellulite treatment stimulates microcirculation and the elimination of liquids to improve the appearance of ‘orange peel’ skin. These treatments are possible due to new machines – a skin analyser and Keramos Radio Frequency (KRF) machine – from

Owner Hannah Kerry is thrilled that she’s able to bring these revolutionary treatments to her clients. “I’m always on the lookout for something new, but I’d never bring a product or treatment to the salon that I don’t 100% believe in – DIBI Milano develops great, innovative technologies, allowing us to offer something fresh, new and really effective.” The skin analyser uses dual scientific diagnostic instruments to analyse and evaluate imperfections of the face and body. The data recorded is combined to provide clear information about the type and severity of imperfections in the face (such as impurities, capillary fragility, wrinkles and hyper-pigmentation) and body (cellulite, silhouette, tone), enabling the beautician to determine an effective treatment programme, targeting problem areas for the best results. DIBI Milano’s KRF technology uses radio frequency to carry out skin rejuvenation, helping to improve skin elasticity and tissue permeability, increasing lymphatic drainage and stimulating contraction of the collagen fibres. Combined with products, the KRF can be used for facial and body treatments. To find out more about Serene Retreat’s new treatments, or to make an appointment, call 01773 745525 or visit 262a Derby Road, Ripley DE5 8JN. Hannah and her friendly team will always be happy to offer honest, no obligation advice on how these, or any of Serene Retreat’s other beauty treatments, could benefit you.

Our amazing skin analyser 'DIBI MILANO' gives a skin printout of your facial imperfections, showing any deep down loss of collagen, elastin and water imbalance etc. For your body, it will read cellulite, fat and it will tone where needed. Equilibrium Whether you want to relieve aches and pains, ease anxiety or aid relaxation and better sleep, Jim Pierce at Equilibrium can help. Offering various types of massage including remedial massage, hot stone massage, full body, head or foot massage, Jim can address the specific needs of all clients.

A head massage can relax the mind, soothe the nervous system, promote sound sleep and benefit the scalp and hair, while massaging the feet is also very relaxing and can help to improve circulation, lift mood, alleviate anxiety and relieve aching feet.”

“Massage is good for so many things,” explains Jim, “it can help with aches and pains associated with sitting for long periods of time, ease muscle soreness after exercise, increase mobility, stimulate metabolism, improve circulation and offer many other physical benefits, as well as being deeply relaxing and great for the mind, too. But it’s not a ‘one size fits all’ approach, which is why I’ve recently introduced new therapies, hot stone massage and head and foot massage, to extend my range of services and offer something new to clients.”

At his clinic in Smalley, Jim conducts a thorough consultation before commencing treatment and, if you’re unsure, he can advise on what type of massage will be most beneficial for you. Friendly and knowledgeable, Jim’s sole aim is to help people to feel better through massage. “Many clients fall asleep during the session as massage is so soothing. In a busy world it’s great to see people feeling so relaxed! They always leave looking ‘lighter’ than when they arrived.”

“Hot stone massage is not only deeply relaxing, making it great for those suffering from stress or anxiety, but it can also help with chronic, deep muscle issues, as the hot stones relax the muscle allowing me to work deeper without the associated discomfort. Head and foot massages offer shorter treatment options for those not wanting a full massage.

Take some time out to take care of yourself and benefit your body and mind – book an appointment with Jim at Equilibrium and see how great you could feel! Contact Jim on 01332 883461/07882 930525 or email jim@equilibrium-bib.co.uk. For more information or to read client testimonials, visit www.equilibrium-bib.co.uk.

As an experienced masseur, I believe that massage should be a key element in maintaining your health and well-being I work across a range of conditions including:

I offer the following therapies:

• Pain Reduction • Increased Mobility • Muscle Recovery • Stress/Anxiety Relief • Deep Relaxation

• Remedial Massage • Hot Stone Massage • Head Massage • Foot Massage

I look forward to hearing from you to discuss how I can help. To book an appointment please call 01332 883461 • 07882 930525 41 Main Road, Smalley DE7 6EF • Easy parking To advertise contact Ruth: T: 01332 883140 M: 07545 261034 E: ruth@allthingslocal.co.uk

Footnotes: Why Are My Toenails so Thick? Thick toenails are often assumed to be caused by the growth of fungus under the toenails and in the toenail itself. In many cases, this assumption is correct. However, there are other things that will make a toenail look thick and distorted. Injury to the root of the nail can cause temporary thickening, while severe or repeated injury can cause a nail to become permanently thickened. Skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema may also affect a nail if the skin around the nails is affected. If the problem is being caused by a fungus, there is usually some yellowish or brownish discoloration of the nails. Topical treatments for fungal toenail infections are often not very effective because they don’t soak into thick toenails very well. The challenge is to get the nail as thin as possible and then apply a preparation that has the ability to penetrate down through the layers and contact the fungus. In severe cases I will use a special kind of rotary burr to reduce the nail thickness as much as possible to give the anti-fungal preparation every chance of getting to the root of the problem. This alone usually vastly improves the appearance and comfort of the affected nail or nails. By Peter Waugh

Health, Beauty & Fitness

Alex Robinson Why…? Over the past 10 years, technology has made our lifestyles more sedentary. Why exercise when you can flip through over 6,000 movies and television shows on Netflix? You can zap a whole (sodium-infused) dinner in the microwave and scroll through the Internet for hours on end (doesn’t that sound like the ideal weekend?). However, this sedentary lifestyle is the source of many health problems for today’s modern society, ranging from diabetes, to chronic joint pain, to obesity. In 2013, the World Health Organisation said that obesity has doubled since 1980. Lucky for you, no expensive prescription is needed to prevent this: just exercise! Here are 10 reasons why getting fit is the best decision you’ll ever make: 1. You only have one body and you have to live in it for the rest of your life. Why not treat it with respect? 2. Being active helps to boost your ‘good’ cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein) and reduces your ‘bad’ cholesterol.

3. Exercise increases the release of endorphins, which boosts mood. (Hit the gym when you’re stressed or in a bad mood for instant relief!) 4. Building muscle increases your body’s basal metabolic rate (BMR) so you can burn more calories while you’re resting. So get lifting those weights! 5. Exercise boosts energy levels – ironic, right? Working your heart and lungs releases more nutrients and oxygen into your bloodstream so more energy for you! 6. Getting fit helps to prevent chronic health conditions, such as high cholesterol, obesity, and joint problems. Just for the ladies, being fit reduces the risk of osteoporosis. 7. Exercise is a great bonding experience for friends and family. Running, walking, boxing, half-marathons… oh, my! 8. Getting fit can help boost your self-confidence. 9. The chance of physical injury decreases. Strong muscles mean less pressure on major joints like knees. 10. Improving your fitness reduces the risk of cardiovascular problems, such as heart disease and stroke. Show your heart some love. Short Story A Marrow Just Knows “Make room on the table for my marrow, Linda,” Edna barked, hugging the vegetable to her chest, while pretending not to notice Linda slipping something she shouldn’t into her coat pocket. “It’s my donation to the tombola.” “Edna, what a surprise!” Linda shrilled, smoothing her clothing. “I thought you were helping to get the cream teas ready?”

“Look at it.” Edna nodded warily at the marrow. “I’ve had that thing staring back at me from the vegetable plot for weeks.”

“All done,” said Edna, heaving the marrow onto the table, “so I thought I’d come and give you a hand.” “I’m nearly done here too.” Linda needlessly fussed over her display.

“How odd. It looks as though the stripes have formed a human face on it. It’s quite sinister isn’t it?” Linda whispered. “It’s as though it’s scowling.”

“We’ve got a good spread.” Edna stood back and admired Linda’s arrangement of donated tombola prizes. “Would you look at that!”

“Its eyes follow you everywhere,” Edna growled. “It knows all your secrets.” Edna warmed to her theme. “Last week I forgot to leave some money out for the milkman, and that marrow wouldn’t give me any peace until I put it right.”

“You mean the hamper?” Linda remarked casually. “A very generous donation.” The tombola table was heaving with jars of chutneys and jams, some very nice-looking homemade cakes and some not-so-nice-looking homemade cakes. But it was the hamper that everyone would be wanting to win. “Must be a few bob’s worth of stuff in there – chocolates, prosecco and some very fancy smellies,” Edna winked at Linda. “Looks like number five is the ticket everyone will be trying to get their mitts on.” “Is it?” Linda unconsciously touched her pocket. “Oh yes, of course it is.” “Very good of you to help,” Edna continued. “It’s always nice to get new volunteers.” “Very kind of you to donate your marrow.” Linda patted the huge vegetable. “I’m sure anyone would be delighted to win that.”

“But that’s crazy.” Linda stepped back. “How can it know?” “It just knows,” Edna shrugged, and let her words hang in the air for a moment. Finally, she added cheerfully, “Are you going to stick a raffle ticket on it?” “Yes of course.” Linda jumped and battled with the tape dispenser while keeping her eye on the marrow. “Shall we put the tickets in the tombola barrel?” Edna said. “That’s the last job isn’t it?” Edna watched as Linda anxiously folded the raffle tickets, a mist of sweat beading her top lip. The women worked in silence while the marrow looked on, angrily. Edna knew it wouldn’t be long until Linda cracked. A marrow always works a charm on a guilty conscience.

“Doubtful,” Edna snorted. “I’m glad to see the back of it.”

Even a marrow with a face drawn on with felt-tipped pen. Ticket number five would soon find its way out of Linda’s pocket and back into the tombola barrel, with no questions asked.

“Really?” Linda frowned. “Why’s that?”

TME Electrical Although it can be tempting to make savings and cut corners, when altering the electrics in your home it’s imperative that it’s done safely by a professionally qualified electrician, otherwise the results could be dangerous. Tom Allcock of TME Electrical has seen and rectified many problems over the years that have resulted from dodgy DIY or ‘cut price’ cowboys. “Safety has got to be the number one priority when it comes to electrics. When you know what you’re doing it’s not difficult to do things properly and it’s no more expensive. I always make sure the job’s done right.” Tom has been a self-employed electrician for the past eight years, working on domestic and commercial properties doing everything from fitting new sockets, TV points and lights to new circuit boards and full rewires. He also offers PAT testing, landlord’s certificates and periodic inspections, including surveys on homes you may be thinking of buying. “I’d always recommend periodic inspections to check safety and make sure everything’s working as it should be, and before you buy a house it’s a good idea to have the electrics inspected so you know exactly what you’re buying. Most problems can be solved, but it’s best to go into these things with your eyes open.”

As well as troubleshooting, Tom installs electrics for renovations such as extensions, kitchens, bathrooms or garden rooms and can work alongside other trades to ensure the timing of the installation works for a smooth, trouble-free process. He’s happy to advise on the suitability of products or layouts, helping you to find the best solution for your needs. “I encourage customers to choose eco-friendly options such as LED lighting – their performance is good, they’re better for the environment, cheaper to run, and, because they create less heat, they’re safer, too.” Tom is also Rolec registered and can obtain grants on your behalf towards the cost of fitting electric vehicle (EV) points, which are becoming increasingly popular. If you’re looking to make changes to your electrics, from a new light to a total overhaul, don’t risk doing it yourself! Call Tom on 01773 513723 or 07974 798768 for a free, no obligation quote and rest assured that the job will be done thoroughly and safely.

Access4Lofts Are you fed up with clutter? Do you need more storage space? Well the answer could literally be under your own roof! For many homeowners, the loft is an underutilised area because it can be difficult and dangerous to reach. Derby-based loft ladder installer Access4Lofts (whose slogan is ‘creating space the easy way’) can change all that, often in less than a day! Access4Lofts provides a free survey and quote service so you can find out what is achievable with your loft area. The majority of properties have an access hatch to the space in the loft. Access4Lofts create space the easy and affordable way. They can supply and install a new loft hatch and a safe, sturdy aluminium loft ladder in your home in just one day! That means that your dark and dismal roof space suddenly becomes a useful storage area for all that family clutter. “My experience enables fitting the ladder and converting the access hatch; in double-quick time the space is accessible and I leave no mess behind.” explains Hardeep Banwait, Access4Lofts Derby.

For extra peace of mind, Access4Lofts is an approved Which? Trusted Trader which means they have been assessed by Which? and passed their stringent checks. For added confidence, they also have full public liability insurance, are DBS checked and all ladders come with a minimum 5-year guarantee. To find out how Access4Lofts can create more space for you and your family or to book a free survey and quote visit www.access4lofts.co.uk/derby or call 01332 448404. You can also find them on Facebook @access4loftsderby.

We are specialists in installing loft ladders and hatches. We also supply and install loft boarding, lighting and insulation – to help you to escape all that clutter (and avoid the summer time blues of doing it yourself!)

Property Matters

Planning your dream living space... As the darker nights start to set in, what a great time to start planning your perfect extension project. Snuggle down in front of the fireplace with a nice warm cup of hot chocolate and start to imagine how you can create the extra space you have been dreaming about… BDS Architecture are expert home designers who understand your vision of a smoother, sleeker home, and will strive to make it your reality. 4 Reasons to Go Ahead & Get That Extension: 1. Increase the Value of Your Home If you’re thinking about selling your home sometime in the future, an extension will increase the value of your property and make it more attractive to most potential buyers. 2. Increase the Available Space in Your Home The added space will be very useful if you are growing your family or need to make extra room for parties or dining. Or, an extension could make a fantastic home office removed from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the family. Ultimately, an extension will open up a wealth of new possibilities allowing you to make the most of your home.

3. No Need to Move House Moving home can be a stressful, expensive and very time-consuming process. There are lots of fees associated with moving home, and most home buyers tend to spend a great deal on redecorating as soon as they move Everybody wants to Shirley Kitchenin. extension on a period cottage, make their own mark on a property, after all. Extending your home allows you to create your own personalised new space without the high costs associated with moving. 4. Modernise Your Home Adding an extension is a fantastic way to make your home appear more modern and inviting. This is particularly true if you own a period property that struggles to gain much natural light. If you have a garden or expansive rural view that is restricted by old architecture, an extension can help to make you and your family feel closer to nature. You can read more about BDS at bdsarchitecture.co.uk - The Essential Guide To Extending Your Living Space is the ultimate read for an aspiring renovator – or: A Free Guide To Building Your Own Home might be for you. Best of all, both guides are completely free! To discuss your project call us today on 01332 830313.

Homes & Gardens Get yourself a good selection of rocks from local or mail-order suppliers and don’t be tempted to use old chunks of concrete – the end result will look like a rubble pile with plants! Use a pile of rubble or broken bricks to create the classic mound shape – this will be hidden by the good-looking rocks. The rubble pile also ensures good drainage; alpines typically hate being too wet. Use upturned turves on top of the mound, laid grassy side down. Then add a layer of sandy soil, to a depth of about 30cm (12in), over the top of the turves; these prevent the soil from slipping down amongst the rocks. Then, using string and pegs, mark out where you want each outcrop of rock. Once the soil is well-firmed, use a spade or a trowel to dig out a hole for each rock; this keeps the rocks securely embedded so they won’t shift even in heavy rain.

Gardening

The Rock Garden Is Alive… If you have ever dreamed of Sound of Music landscapes, then create your own! A garden mountain range might not be possible, but you may have space for your very own rock garden. So what do you need to do? You’ll need to choose a fairly sunny spot, ideally away from overhanging deciduous trees – most alpine plants like a fair bit of light and detest becoming clogged up with deteriorating leaves. Even if space is limited, make the rock garden on as large a scale as possible, for more impact and planting opportunities, and a more realistic feel. If possible, include gullies running down the rock garden, perhaps ending in a pond or pool, by arranging rocks so that water can run over or between them. Where the water runs beneath rocks (rather than over them) you should use guttering or drainage pipes that are hidden by soil or rock outcrops.

Use smaller bits of stone beneath the rocks to wedge them firmly. Add more soil over these bits of stone and then more soil between the rocks when they are in position. Water well to settle the soil, topping up if necessary. Alpine plants are available in nurseries and garden centres now, but just choose a few – buying more throughout next spring and summer will give you an array of alpines to provide flowers and interest throughout most of the year. Arrange your plants, still in their pots, on the surface of the soil. When you are happy with how they look, use a trowel to make a planting hole, then remove the pot, pop the plant in the hole, and fill in around it with some compost. When you have finished planting you can top-dress the soil surface with good-looking horticultural grit or gravel. Book Reviews: Fall Into a Good Book This Autumn The Dutch House Ann Patchett

This is a book about the bond between siblings, the repercussions of past events that echo down the years and the attachment people can feel for a place. In this case, the place is a big, grand house, and the siblings are Danny and his big sister, Maeve. Their mother flees when Danny is just a toddler, leaving Maeve to step into her shoes. When the children gain a stepmother, they soon learn they’re not welcome in their own home and the future they had planned comes tumbling down. A beautifully written, gentle book, The Dutch House is one to savour.

Tall Tales and Wee Stories Billy Connolly

Dip in when you need an instant pick-me-up after a bad day. (Just don’t read it on the train, unless you don’t mind snorting with laughter in public.)

Time to Eat Nadiya Hussain

Like to eat home-cooked food but often struggle to find the time? This book is for you. From batch-cooking to making the most of leftovers, plus plenty of quick and simple recipes, Time to Eat is a treasure trove of ideas. Enjoy Harissa Bean Pizza for brunch (with just ten minutes of hands-on time), followed

by One Tray Peanut Chicken for dinner and Caramelized Biscuit Traybake for pudding.

How to Create your Garden Adam Frost

During spring and summer, it can be a challenge just to keep the grass cut and the weeds at bay. Come autumn, the garden is a bit easier to manage, so it’s a good time to start planning for next year. This book is packed with practical advice, from designing walkways to revitalising borders and building water features. Step-by-step instructions, bright photos and illustrations, and an easy-going writing style make the process of garden design all the more enjoyable.

It’s Vintage, Darling! How to be a Clothes Connoisseur Christa Weil

Rebelling against fast fashion? This book will help you to embrace vintage clothing. You’ll learn how to recognise quality craftsmanship, identify different types of materials, cuts and designs, and choose clothes that look like they’ve been tailor-made for you, as well as finding out what to check for before buying, and much, much more. It’s Vintage Darling! is over ten years old now, so you may need to order it from your library or buy it second-hand online.

Christmas Papercraft Patricia Moffett

Planning to make your own decorations this Christmas? This book makes it easy, with templates and step-bystep instructions. There are tree decorations, lanterns and a festive winter scene for a shelf or mantelpiece, as well as greetings cards; thirteen designs are included altogether. For most, all you need is some paper, a craft knife, glue, a cutting mat (ideally), and fifteen minutes’ peace and quiet. By Kate Duggan

Hobbies How to Keep Your Goldfish Happy Almost everyone has kept a goldfish at some time in their lives. Whether it was won as a prize at a funfair or bought as a pet, most of us have a memory of watching our fish swim around its new, watery home for the first time. The trouble is, many of us also have a memory of our first fish dying – sometimes within weeks or months of bringing it home. Keeping goldfish is not as easy as it seems, although with proper care and attention some can live for as long as 25 years. A record-breaking goldfish called “Tish”, from North Yorkshire, actually lived for 43 years. With their bright scales, varied colours and graceful moves, goldfish can make delightful pets. If you are thinking of keeping goldfish, here are some useful care tips:

Too darned hot?

Goldfish need to be kept in clean, cool water that mirrors their original habitat of freshwater rivers, ponds and lakes. The temperature should ideally remain between 10° C to 22° C, so a heater should not normally be necessary. It’s important to avoid sudden changes of temperature, especially when adding fresh water that is colder than the water currently in the tank. If you are worried about temperature swings, buy a thermometer.

A clean fish is a happy fish

Fish from the carp family (to which the goldfish belongs) produce a large amount of waste matter. This means that harmful toxins build up in the water, so buy a filter and make sure that it is regularly cleaned. The chlorine in tap water is dangerous to fish, so leave water to stand for 24 hours or add a dechlorinating product. It’s impossible to tell whether water is healthy by just looking at it,

86 86

so test the water at least every four weeks with a kit that screens for ammonia and nitrate.

Give me some space

A simple way to calculate the amount of space your goldfish needs in a tank is to allow 2 litres of water per 0.5cm of goldfish length. The RSPCA is very clear that ‘decorative’ tanks, such as goldfish bowls, are not suitable for fish. Round bowls are particularly harmful because the surface area is very small, limiting the amount of oxygen that can enter the water.

Feed me

Make sure you buy the right kind of food for your fish and never feed a goldfish with tropical fish flakes. Goldfish require a plant-based diet, whereas tropical fish need protein. Remove food after five minutes if it remains uneaten, as it will rot and pollute the water. If you are not sure how much to give your fish, start with a small amount, then add a little more if they still appear to be hungry. All these guidelines may make goldfish care seem complicated – particularly if you thought you could just pop your fish into a bowl of tap water and watch it swim around. There may be a certain amount of work involved in keeping goldfish, but you’ll be rewarded by the sight of happy, healthy fish that – like Tish the Yorkshire goldfish – will live to a ripe old age. Your fish may not survive until they are over 40, but with good care they will certainly give you many years of pleasure. By Kate McLelland

Children & Education

The Diary of a Local Mum Time to Grow Up… When’s the right time to start giving your kids more freedom? Encouraging more responsibility? Asking them to help out at home? Allowing them to stay home alone? The list of ‘grown up’ things is endless, as is the ‘advice’ about when and how to approach this phase. While everyone has an opinion, often a very strong one, these vary massively (‘My 4-year-old always puts his/her own washing away’, ‘My 10-year-old has their own key’, ‘I’d never let my 14-year-old cook unsupervised’…) and there are no guidelines for these kinds of things – every family seems to take a different approach. There is no official law about when a child can stay at home unsupervised, no guidance on how much they should be doing around the house and, while I know you should use your own judgement on these matters, this often leaves you second guessing. It makes sense that you should encourage and allow more grown up behaviour as and when your child is ready ... although this can vary depending on the task at hand. When it comes to household chores, it’s certainly not advisable to follow their lead. I don’t think it’s out of order to ask a teenager to load/unload the dishwasher from time to time. For a teenager, however, it’s apparently unreasonable to ask them to even put dirty pots anywhere in the vague vicinity of the dishwasher. With regards to other adult activities though, such as shopping or enjoying cake in a café with friends … oh yes, suddenly they’re very grown up! The truth is who really is ready to ‘adult’? I’m certainly not! There are many days when I wish I could shy away from the responsibilities of being a grown-up. It often feels overwhelming. When you glance around for the adult in the room then suddenly realise that it’s you, you’re the one in charge, the feelings of inadequacy, ineptitude and immaturity hit you like a train. This ‘growing up’

lark sneaks up on you out of nowhere; before you know it you’re a fully-fledged adult and you don’t remember getting the certificate. With this in mind, I feel I should be encouraging my kids to take more responsibility so that they’re fully prepared for all that adulthood throws at them, by taking small steps now such as being able to get themselves up in the morning with no input (aka nagging) from me, look after themselves (to a degree...I’m not about to book a fortnight in Spain and leave them to their own devices), help around the house, tidy their rooms, take responsibility for their own belongings and organisation etc. The other part of me, though, wants them to remain kids for as long as possible: happy, carefree, and blissfully unaware of the mundane shackles of adulthood. Who wants to tidy their room when there’s a massive trampoline to bounce on? They certainly don’t – and who can blame them? If I could opt out of being a grown-up for a while I most certainly would and (serious doubts about the strength of my pelvic floor aside) I’d probably be out there bouncing with them if I wasn’t buried under a very long and very boring to-do list. Whatever approach you take, being an adult isn’t always easy and I think some leeway is required either way. While kids should be given a chance to try their hand at some more grown up things, grown-ups should also be allowed some time off on occasion. So why not grant yourself the day off ‘adulting’? Put your worries aside, leave your laundry on the floor, and spend the day doing whatever you fancy, whether that’s playing on the trampoline or binge-watching Netflix … maybe make sure there’s a responsible adult somewhere nearby though, just in case you need one! (Oh, and try to put out of your mind the fact that tomorrow you’re going to have to sort all this mess out… Growing up’s no fun.)

Charity Halloween Spookfest You may be familiar with the ‘Halloween House’ at Rawson Green…the spectacularly dressed property is becoming a popular local attraction on 31st October. Homeowners Gary and Lesley transform their front garden into a spook-tacular trail that’s open to all and, in doing so, raise hundreds of pounds for charity each year. This year promises to be bigger and better than ever before: “We always like to make things as different as possible from previous events”, says Gary. This year, however, they’re taking on more than ever before – Gary and Lesley will be getting married in Ripley that morning, in full Halloween attire! While most newlyweds would spend the afternoon at a reception, the new Mr & Mrs Harris will be dashing home to add the finishing touches to their Halloween-fest. By 4pm they will be ready to welcome guests into their incredible tunnel of darkened passages filled with witches, ghosts, ghouls, spooky music, smoke machines, lasers… and a few surprises, too! Gary and Lesley spend months preparing their home for the event, which initially began just to entertain their

®

grandchildren and local trick or treaters, and has grown into a fantastic charity fundraiser which now attracts 100s of people in just 5 hours! “We’re raising money for Children in Need and we’re expecting a visit from Pudsey Bear on the night. Everyone’s welcome – people of all ages come along to enjoy the spectacle! There’s no formal admission charge but we ask for donations to the charity; we will be selling hot dogs, soft drinks and tea and coffee too, with all proceeds going to Children in Need. We know it’s going to be a very hectic day…but we can’t wait!” To enjoy the Halloween-fest call in to 17 Rawson Green, Kilburn DE56 0LN between 4pm and 9pm on 31st October… and don’t forget to congratulate the spooky bride and groom while you’re there!

Elfcare If you are at a time of life when day-to-day tasks are becoming more challenging, Elfcare is here to help! They provide valuable personal care and domestic support services to clients in the local area, offering assistance, a welcome friendly face and valued company as they get the jobs done. Danielle Millan has worked in the care industry for many years in both the public and private sector and, although she loved the work, she could always see ways that the service could be improved to better cater for clients’ needs… so, she created Elfcare! “I love the profession and care a lot about the people I look after, so I wanted to create a business that reflected this – one that really cares, in every aspect. We’re a totally private company offering completely flexible care that’s built around individuals. We will do anything that clients want, need or that is important to them – this can include meal preparation, cleaning, helping with showering or

bedtime routines, attending medical appointments, shopping, companionship or trips out… the list is endless. What matters is that, through what we do, we make a difference to the lives of the people we care for, helping them to retain their independence and remain in their own homes. Our clients know that we’re always there for them; they can call for help and support at any time.” With no fixed care ‘packages’ Elfcare can offer support on a daily, weekly or fortnightly basis, as needed, with visits starting from 30 mins upwards. They’ve also recently created an online family portal so families can login to see what’s been done on each visit. In order to bring their services to more local people, Elfcare are looking for a new member of the team: “We have 10 – 20 daytime hours per week available for someone with the right personality, attitude and experience; a caring, compassionate, reliable and friendly individual who’ll fit in to our Elfcare ‘family’! If you think you could be the person for the job, please get in touch.” If you, or a member of your family, could use a little Elfcare, contact Danielle on 07564 791379 or 0115 9986076. For added assurance, read their excellent reviews on www.homecare.co.uk.

Your Horoscope October and November 2019 October moves the sign of Libra to the forefront. Libra is the sign of the scales and invites concentration and reflection on what needs to be done to find more stability in your life. As the energising planet Mars joins the Sun in Libra on the 4th there is a great opportunity to put some energy into achieving a balanced life. Mercury and Venus arrive in Scorpio early in the month ensuring that many of us will take the plunge in search of truth, wisdom and untapped resources. The Aries full moon on the 13th brings a peak in physical energy and enhanced activity, suggesting the drive to find expression in a creative way. The new moon falls in intense Scorpio on the 28th; this can be an emotional time as the mysteries of life intrigue and invite us to delve a little deeper. November puts the deep and mysterious sign of Scorpio into the spotlight; this is your cosmic invitation to review anything in your life that has outlived its purpose and needs shifting. Mercury remains in retrograde motion until the 20th giving ample time for in-depth reflection on the changes that need to be made. Dynamic Mars arrives in Scorpio on the 19th offering great potential to develop your inner warrior and your ability to fight for change and transformation. Venus, the planet of love and romance, enters Sagittarius on the 2nd; chances are that romantic attachments can blossom as they become more passionate and intense. The full moon is in Taurus on the 12th and the new moon is in adventurous Sagittarius on the 26th. ARIES: MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 October: An exciting creative opportunity appears to be up for grabs during October as the powerful Aries full moon on the 13th challenges you to up your game and reach out to take some risks. Mars arriving in Libra on the 4th may bring a relationship issue into question. November: Resources and finances are in the spotlight during November as the Scorpio Sun encourages an all-important review. Scorpio Mars demands privacy so it’s best to play a close hand until Mercury goes direct on the 21st. The Sagittarian new moon on the 26th brings refreshing change. TAURUS: APRIL 21 - MAY 21 October continues with the theme of new friendships. Venus, your planetary ruler, enters the deep and powerful sign of Scorpio on the 9th, drawing your attention to the important things in your life. It may be best to think carefully before you express your opinion. November: The transformational Scorpio Sun shines a guiding light on all your partnerships and relationships in November. This is a great time to make some changes as you communicate your values and your worth – if those around don’t get it, it’s because it’s time for them to move on. GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUNE 21 October: Love and romance are in the spotlight during October as energetic Mars stirs up relationships, particularly after the 4th. Mercury and Venus in deep and intense Scorpio suggest that there might also be some soul searching and decisions to be made concerning work matters. November: The work and wellbeing angle of your chart is emphasised during November as daily routines and general health become your top priorities. Mercury, your ruler, returns to direct motion after the 21st ensuring that things get easier as interesting new opportunities come your way. CANCER: JUNE 22 - JULY 22 October: The powerful Aries full moon on the 13th highlights a career opportunity as your thinking becomes much clearer and you are ready to forge ahead with an important decision. It’s a good time to revise what your unique qualities are and use your imagination and creativity. November: The Moon, your ruler, starts November in down-to-earth Capricorn, illuminating the relationship sector of your chart. Saturn and Pluto are in your opposite sign and could create stress and tension caused by a lack of clarity. The way forward becomes much clearer as Mercury turns direct on the 21st. LEO: JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 October is looking very positive for communication and negotiations on all levels; your mind should be focussed in order to expand your knowledge. Jupiter enhances your creativity and brings optimism and good luck, but be sure not to overstretch yourself. November: Romance is high on the agenda in November as the love planet arrives in fiery Sagittarius. Abundant Jupiter lends a helping hand and ensures that things go your way this month. The Taurus full moon on the 12th brings a career issue into the spotlight. VIRGO: AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 22 October: Exciting new beginnings are evident as the month commences; Mercury, your ruler, enters Scorpio on the 3rd bringing your attention to what is really important in your life and helping you to ignore and dismiss what is no longer valid. Communication is enhanced with the Scorpio full moon. November shines the light on all forms of thinking and communication. Your mind is focussed as you review the power of your thoughts and eliminate those that are destructive. After the 21st you’ll find the courage to express opinions that you are normally reluctant to express.

Community LIBRA: SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 23 October: As Venus, your ruling planet, moves into Scorpio on the 9th all things financial come to the forefront. Creative planning is necessary as you consider new and exciting ways of making money. Mars energises your sign from the 4th; you should find that your vitality improves. November welcomes your ruling planet to the exciting and daring sign of Sagittarius. The urge for adventure and risk-taking is strong as plans for new endeavours start to form. Successful interaction and new projects are the main themes to keep you occupied. Confidence is strong as you do things your way. SCORPIO: OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22 October may turn out to be a rather introspective month; be sure to take care of your physical health as your strength may be drained by over-stretching yourself. The Scorpio new moon on the 28th changes the energy as you make a path for new projects to be initiated. November is your birthday month and it offers the start of a brand new cycle of transformation and personal growth. Dynamic Mars enters your sign on the 19th, ensuring the perfect opportunity to be more assertive as you step up into a more important role. The new moon on the 26th could see a lucky breakthrough. SAGITTARIUS: NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 21 October: This month might bring some uncertainty as the reflective and self-examining area of your chart is highlighted. Steer your energy towards realistic targets that can be completed with hard work. The powerful Scorpio new moon on the 28th brings an important breakthrough. November is super-charged as Jupiter and Venus in your sign make their presence felt. The full moon on the 12th brings an important work-related issue to the surface and then your own powerful new moon on the 26th ensures that your long-held dreams and aspirations finally take shape. CAPRICORN: DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 20 October suggests there is a challenge to your work and career situation as enthusiastic Mars moves into a confrontational position. Try not to give in to unnecessary self-criticism as your task is to balance logic with imagination. Opportunities arrive on the Scorpio new moon. November: The Sun is powerful during November, stirring up anything to do with friendships and group endeavours. Romance is also favoured as dynamic Mars moves into passionate Scorpio on the 19th, increasing the chances of a meeting with someone new. AQUARIUS: JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 18 October: This month emphasises the importance of making plans for further education, adventure and travel. Your life goals are highlighted and the powerful new moon in Scorpio on the 28th facilitates new projects that require your concentration and endurance. November: Scorpio Mercury turns direct on the 21st so you may not have to be so persistent to be clearly understood in your business dealings. An important breakthrough involving close friends comes around the time of the Sagittarian new moon on the 26th PISCES: FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20 October: This month highlights the need for balance and stability in your investments, finances and resources. Mercury and Venus arrive in intense Scorpio during the second week and both planets favour the discussion of matters that are usually kept hidden. November: Favourable Jupiter at the highest point in your chart makes a challenging aspect to innovative Uranus; you’ll need to stay wide awake and attentive to any new prospects that suddenly appear. The new moon in Sagittarius on the 26th offers exciting opportunities and opens your mind to new horizons.

A Railway Journey on High Peak Rail in 1877

This amusing account of a trip on the Old High Peak Railway was taken from a North Derbyshire newspaper a good many years ago. It might have been quicker to walk, 2-4-0 engine 1876 on theForrest Peak Forest 2-4-0 engine re-builtre-built in 1876inused onused the Peak Line. Line. Photo courtesy of the Mid but not so entertaining! Photo courtesy of the Midland Railway Society Railway Society. A journey of 20 miles in six hours! This was the rate of speed in travelling on the old High Peak Railway 30 years ago when the line was available for passenger traffic. It is recorded in “Our Iron Roads” by F. S. Williams, that in the August of 1877 he went to Stonehouse, locally known as Stonnis, just by the Black Rocks where the railway crosses the Wirksworth road, and inquired of the man in the office for the train. “Do you mean the ‘fly’?” was the reply. “Yes”. But the official, not knowing whether the fly had passed or not, went out to enquire, and brought back word that it had gone, but that if (says the writer) I followed it up the line I might catch it at the siding, but if not I should be sure to overtake it at “Middleton Run”. I accordingly gave chase, and at length caught sight of it being drawn up the incline by a rope and a stationary engine. A man at the bottom inquired if I wished to catch the “fly”, and added, “I will stop it for you at the top, which he did by a signal. A quarter of a mile ahead I joined it. My fellow passengers were then a young woman with a child, and the vehicle in which we sat was like an old omnibus. The guard stood in the middle and worked the brake through a hole in the floor. A locomotive now drew us three or four miles to the foot of another incline, up which we were drawn by a rope. When reaching the summit the guard remarked “We may have to wait at the top.” “How long?” I enquired. “Oh, it may be a few minutes,” he replied, “or a few hours. It all depends when the engine comes to take us on. “Yesterday” he added, “it did not come at all!” To while away the time I walked along the line, and my fellow passengers went mushrooming. In about

100 100

three hours an engine came from Whaley Bridge to fetch us, and after the fireman, driver and guard had refreshed themselves at a little public house not far away, and had freely commented on their “horse” they went back along the line, brought up the “fly”, and, having refreshed themselves again, we started. At one part of the journey a flock of sheep were quietly feeding or resting on the line! “Just see them jump the walls,” said the guard as we approached, and they did it like dogs! We reached Park Gates, just about a mile from Buxton, at seven o’clock, after a journey of about 20 miles, in six hours! Not long after my journey a traveller on this line was killed, and the company decided to close it against passenger traffic. The Society’s talks take place at 7.30pm at Strutts on Derby Road on the first Wednesday of the month. On 2 October, David Bell discusses the latest ideas about “The Plague Village of Eyam”. Sue Woore looks at “Derbyshire place names ending in -hay” on 6 November, and “Christmas in Belper” is remembered on 4 December. Visitors are charged £3. Please contact the Secretary, Adrian Keetley, on 01773 599089 if you need further information.

Upbeat Your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team would like to offer some advice around the Halloween and bonfire night period, when people may experience unwanted trick or treaters or what they consider to be anti-social behaviour. Residents can get hold of posters to display in windows or doors showing passers-by that they do not wish to be visited. You can download one to print from the Derbyshire police website, www.derbyshire.police.uk, or contact your local team on the details below. Our officers will also offer a different poster to supermarkets, stores and shops which tell customers that eggs and flour will not be sold to anyone under the age of 16. If you are a parent, you might want to consider the following tips, and encourage your children to be respectful of members of the community who may be vulnerable, fearful or not want to be disturbed. They include: • Young children involved in trick or treat should be accompanied by an adult • Consider calling at houses where you know the occupants, rather than strangers • Respect the privacy and wishes of people who do not want to take part in trick or treat – observe the “Sorry No Trick or Treat” posters.

Bereavement Matters I am entering my 34th year working in the funeral industry and I have seen very many changes in that time, but I believe that even bigger changes await us in the near future. I am not talking about further alterations to the way services are conducted, nor the addition to the widening and welcome range of accessories and products which enable families to make their loved ones’ send-offs more individual and meaningful. Instead – and this is purely my personal opinion – I believe the biggest changes concern the effect our industry has on the environment as the world becomes more ecologically aware and, in particular, our tradition of burying our dead or committing them to be cremated. Understandably, few people would choose to dwell on the specifics of either option, but there is increasing awareness of the effects both methods have on the planet, whether it’s through the heavy use of resources necessary for cremation and the emissions it causes, or the amount of land needed by cemeteries. Much has already been achieved to make the funeral industry more eco-friendly. Most people no longer want

solid wood mahogany coffins and we sell many more coffins made from recycled materials or sustainable bamboo or wool, while hybrid or electric funeral cars are on the horizon. It’s the issue of finding an alternative to cremation or burial which is our biggest challenge, because although more sustainable and less resource-dependent alternatives do exist, they aren’t what people are used to and, as a result, would not be considered right or fitting. Changing that mindset is extremely difficult, but I believe it’s both possible and inevitable. The environment will be of far more concern to the next generation than it has been to ours and, since young people have always embraced ideas that their elders have considered unthinkable, I believe that they will be the ones who’ll make the difficult decision to break with tradition, bringing about one of the biggest changes to our industry.
