I’ve had a busy couple of months since I last wrote. My highlight has to be the day that I met Her Majesty the Queen. When my colleague Ruth and I heard that she was visiting Chatsworth, we agreed that we needed to go along and see if we could catch a glimpse of her as we’d never seen her ‘in the flesh’ before.

We arrived at Chatsworth House two hours before the Royal Party were due to arrive. It was a bit of a lottery deciding where to stand; we knew Her Majesty would be greeting the crowds but of course she wasn’t going to have time to speak to everyone! We decided our best bet was to position ourselves next to someone brandishing a bunch of flowers (clever eh?!) and what a good decision that turned out to be. Her Majesty and Prince Philip arrived and paused just in front of us to be presented with a locally-produced hamper. We thought this was our best photo opportunity but no, it got better. Her Majesty turned and walked directly towards us and the lady holding the flowers (our plan had worked!) She took the blooms and then looked straight at Ruth and me and acknowledged us with a smile and a nod of her head. We curtseyed and said “Hello Your Majesty”. She even paused for a photograph which I thought I’d share with you all; I just wished I’d got a copy of All Things Local to give to her; some excellent reading material for her helicopter flight back to Buckingham Palace! A memorable day indeed.

Money Matters: Auto-enrolment

Please don’t stop reading now! Depending whether you are an employer or an employee, a cold shiver may have just shuddered down your spine. For many employers, the very mention of ‘AE’ will be enough to stop them digesting the remainder of this article. Fear and dread has probably flooded through their minds now. As there are over 1.4 million employers in the UK alone, then a significant number of readers will currently be turning pages quickly to avoid reading the rest of this article!

Terminology such as ‘eligible’, ’non-eligible’ and ‘entitled’ all represent a category of employee that each member of the workforce needs to be assessed as - not just initially, but every pay period, whether that’s weekly or monthly. AE brings 33 new compliance processes that employers must adhere to. Employers cannot coerce, discourage or incentivise non-participation of joining an AE scheme; any evidenced as doing so will be heavily fined. Employers will have to establish a scheme for employees to opt out from, as they must be enrolled first before they can use their right to opt out. For employers, it is not just the compulsory contributions they are compelled to make (1% rising to 3% by 2018), but maintaining the necessary paperwork to evidence the compliance and running of the scheme.

So as an employer, you need to understand your duties and obligations. Who will you turn to for help? For many it’s their accountant, financial adviser, online, DIY or NEST. Support is out there, but it’s key to plan. When is your company’s Staging Date? Best advice says to plan at least 18 months before your SD. Beware of the limited resources available to you though – there is only so much support for the hundreds of thousands of employers needing it. As more employers approach their deadline, demand may increase as inevitably procrastination breeds panic and realisation that enough support is not there when needed. There are only 24 hours in the day! This is not the next stakeholder scheme. Enrolment is compulsory, even if an employee then decides to opt out. So please don’t turn a blind eye or bury your head in the sand about AE. It is on our doorstep and will not go away. Plan your next step now, not in 18 months’ time. This is your friendly warning – get the ball rolling.

As we say farewell to summer and the nights start drawing in, there’s no need to feel gloomy. Now is the time to welcome a new season and new beginnings. People are starting school for the first time, moving up to ‘big’ school or travelling off to university. The new term has started and all the nervous, fresh-faced students are taking their first tentative steps into a new life of studying, socialising and the freedom to party. I remember this feeling vividly. Maybe because it was only last week. After packing my bag with all the materials I needed I waved a fond farewell to my family and, with a good friend in tow, I made my way off towards a new beginning. Together, we were striding out into the great unknown; the wonderful wide world of opportunity. We knew the time for hard work and learning was ahead of us but we were prepared. On arrival we were a little nervous at first but a pint of beer later and we were back in the swing of things and it felt as if we’d never been away at all.

Sometimes what we knit in the pub might have to be unpicked a little if we have dropped a few stitches, but as a quote I recently noticed on the Internet says, “life is a collage of beginnings and endings that run together like still-wet paint”. In life, as in knitting, we start new projects that may seem a little blurry at the edges. These may either become clearer in time or blur into obscurity. But if it goes wrong, you can always unpick it, gather your needles and start afresh.

This wasn’t the start of a new term at university though! It was a new start for our knitting club in the local pub! Yes, the Knit Knatters group has returned to The King William in Milford after a year (or thereabouts) of maternity leave. It’s odd to think that we gave up the club when we were in the club; surely baby clothes are the easiest to knit? However, now we are getting enough sleep to cope with a night out during the week, we are ready to commit to some exciting new knitting projects (or perhaps complete all those ones we started and never got round to finishing). There were a few empty spaces around the pub table as various members have recently had new beginnings of their own. Some have left the village and one member has bravely moved to a new country entirely and flown off to Spain which, I suppose, is really a bit too far to trek on a Monday night. (I must explain that none of these exits are as a consequence of joining Knit Knatters in the first place!) So although some members have gone on to other things in their lives, the original Knit Knatters are still going strong and we are hoping to attract some new sheep into our woolly fold. Days out with Dennis Go by Bus? Why Not?? According to feedback from people who have tried my outings, some of you fancy going a bit further afield. Whilst bus pass holders go for free, none bus pass holders will find these outings more expensive. Wherever savings can be made by using day tickets etc., I will point them out. My timings are for Monday to Saturday services. Today we are going to Uttoxeter via Burton on Trent and back via Ashbourne. It is interesting to see how the flat lands of the Trent valley contrast with the hills of the Southern Pennines.

The first bus then is either a Trent Barton 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 or 6.4 from Belper bus station to Derby bus station. There is one or other of these every quarter of an hour starting on the hour. Since timings are a bit tight I would suggest the 9.30am. Derby bus station’s bay 23 at 10.30am sees you aboard Trent Barton’s V2 ‘The Villager’ service to Burton travelling via Etwall and Hilton, which takes about an hour. The terminus in Burton is outside ‘PRIMARK’. The adjacent ‘Coopers Square’ shopping centre provides food, drink and

Just a Thought … Literally – Totally Random!

The English language is a wonderful beast. It is a hybrid of other tongues and littered with utterly marvellous words. Why is it then that the modern vernacular seems to have been pared down to all but a few key phrases? You cannot move for people using the word ‘literally’. As far as I was aware the word ‘literally’ was to be used to describe something that actually happened i.e. ‘I literally jumped for joy’. It seems, however, I was wrong, as I heard a passenger on the bus the other day exclaiming: ‘I literally died when I heard the news’. Reincarnation not just for religious icons it seems.

The Better Life Village Life Our village is a society in miniature. There are helpers and hinderers, alliances, conflicts and the occasional historical feud, all in a state of flux. Think Emmerdale, minus the glamour. But also, in amongst the intrigue and entertainment, for the dedicated Better Lifer there is a wealth of knowledge, experience and produce. It’s less to do with any formal notion of exchange, and more about sharing what you know and whatever surplus you have. I like to think it helps that we are incomers and get on with everyone – a little like Switzerland, but with chickens instead of cuckoo clocks.

Out the gate go butternut squashes, the occasional session of occasionally successful computer-related support, green beans, plant cuttings and spare eggs. (I should declare here that, although I love having the chooks, I can take or leave eggs – don’t tell Anne though.) Back through the gate, at various times, come flowers, leeks, marmalade, gooseberries aplenty, different plant cuttings and apples. When our tiny greenhouse needed to come down because the supporting wall required structural work, we asked around and found a good home for it. Well, a good garden actually. Three of us carried it up the lane in sections and two of us returned with rhubarb, fresh flowers, beetroot, runner beans, chard and the most delicious raspberries imaginable. Living greener, the value of a thing is not financial; it’s the use someone can make of it. Only once did we slightly blot our village copybook. Invited up to a carol service at the nearby chapel, we arrived late (mea culpa) and sat in the annexe close to the open door. Someone stuck their head through and politely insisted, as we were the only ones in the room, that we joined the throng next door. Unfortunately, the only seating left was up in the pulpit. Judging by the sea of faces below us, it was a mixed reception. It didn’t help that Anne had forgotten her glasses and I have a habit of singing too loudly at social occasions. We’ve cried off every year since as a mark of community respect. That ‘blip’ aside, our fellow villagers are very supportive of our endeavours – being green is nothing new after all, especially in the countryside. Wearing wellies to the shops, as you prefer to cut across the fields, and carrying back armfuls of kindling because it was too good an opportunity to waste, barely raises an eyebrow. And who doesn’t enjoy the sound of chickens in the morning? (Next door’s dog that’s who.)

Even our local builder got in on the act, turning up at 8am with a bag of mackerel, fresh off the boat, so he could teach me how to gut it. The cat really enjoyed the lesson, but I soon wished that I’d let my breakfast porridge settle a bit first. One villager, a carpenter, came to our rescue after the coat rack fell out of favour with the wall. It turned out that I’d managed to somehow miss both raw plugs when screwing it in – a personal best in DIY incompetence, which no doubt I will supersede at some point. “Well, we’re all good at something,” he told me, in a voice that suggested I really ought to find out just what that is. Adoption agency Family Care is reaching out to people across the City and County in a bid to find ‘forever families’ through adoption. Although Family Care have been working across the East Midlands for over 125 years the agency is still not very well known in Derbyshire, and they are working to change that. As a small specialist adoption agency they prepare, assess and approve prospective adopters. Once a child has joined their ‘forever family’ their support doesn’t stop, as they offer lifelong support to all their families. Pauline Latham OBE MP The nights are drawing in now as we head towards autumn and the summer seems to be so long ago. It has been a busy but extremely enjoyable summer. I was able to spend time in the constituency and was fortunate enough to be able to attend a number of local events and visit local businesses.

I enjoyed attending the Carnival in Little Eaton where I live. It is a week-long event with a variety of activities taking place on different days, culminating in Carnival Day which was on Saturday 5th July. There was a carnival parade, float and fancy dress and I released the balloons at the end of the day to mark the end of the Carnival. Duffield Carnival is another local event which I always enjoy. There were lots of different stalls, several bands played and a carnival parade, and this year saw the very first Carnival King. Another great local event was the Belper Food & Drinks Festival which was held on Sunday 13th July and was attended by hundreds of visitors. It gave local producers the opportunity to promote their products and visitors were able to taste different types of products which included cheese, meats, pickles, cakes and real ale. There were musicians, dancers and a classic car exhibition too. I was delighted to be able to attend the first Little Eaton in Bloom judging day also in July. A small group of local people keen on improving the local community volunteer to help plant, paint, create wildlife areas and pick up litter. The village looked beautiful this summer with all of the flowers and it is largely down to this group of volunteers with support from the Parish Council. You may have read an article that I wrote for All Things Local earlier in the year, about my visit to Pride Park to

meet local ceramic artist, Paul Cummins. At the time of my visit back in January, Paul and a team had already started work making 888,246 ceramic poppies to form an exhibition to be situated in the dry moat at the Tower of London. The exhibition is to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War and each poppy represents a British and Commonwealth military death during this war. The exhibition, ‘The Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’, was officially unveiled by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, on 5th August and 50,000 poppies are being planted each week with the final poppy planted on Armistice Day. I feel extremely privileged to have seen the poppies being made and to have attended the opening of the exhibition. It is a truly magnificent sight and well worth a visit to London to see. You could also visit Parliament at the same time and if you would like to do this, please do not hesitate to contact my London office to arrange a tour. The ceramic poppies will be sold after the exhibition at £25 each, all net proceeds, plus a guaranteed 10% from each one, will be shared equally amongst six service charities. Luang Prabang, The Ancient Capital of Laos In the lush northern hills of Laos, the old city of Luang Prabang is a delightful maze of pristine alleyways festooned in potted plants and bougainvillaea. The fragrance of frangipani lingers under the blue sky, mingling with the aroma of French baguettes and freshly-brewed coffee. Heavy traffic is banned from the historic centre where pedestrians and cyclists wander through the lanes. Time seems to stand still.

Tucked on a scenic peninsula, Luang Prabang nestles at the confluence of the Mekong, all silvery waters dotted with boats and islands, and the emerald green river Khan, spanned by bouncy bamboo bridges washed away every year during the monsoon. Rustic hotels and quaint al fresco restaurants line the left bank where spirit houses ensure good luck. Across the water, tiny allotments tumble down the steep slopes, crickets sing in the trees and myriad frogs join in the chorus at night. In 1995, Luang Prabang was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO for its natural sites, including the nearby Kuang Si waterfalls and the Buddha caves of Pak Ou, and its finely restored architecture, from gilded temples to colonial bungalows and mansions. Often converted into guest houses, the latter boast stylish verandahs and pastel-hued façades framed by lofty palm trees. Here and there, a traditional bamboo hut peeps through the greenery while a wooden house on stilts mirrors its amber-coloured walls in a lily pond. Buddhist flags flutter in the breeze and every morning at 6.00, drums beat in the temples to announce the start of the alms procession. Even before the first rays of the sun light up the river Khan, the people of Luang Prabang line the main street, heads bowed, holding offerings of sticky rice, bananas, biscuits and more. For the monks, this is an act of humility, for the faithful an opportunity to share food and earn merits.

Barefoot and clad in saffron robes, hundreds of monks hurry past in single file, taking only what they need and leaving plenty for families to take home. A few tourists join in but it is a dignified affair full of spiritual vibes. Among the 30 or so temples in town, the 16th century Wat Xieng Thong claims centre stage with its overlapping roofs sweeping down almost to the ground, its Buddha images and its gold-stencil and mosaic decorations. At the far end of the complex, a stone lion guards the steps leading down to the Mekong where royalty used to land, paying respect in the temple before heading for their palace. Right across town, tucked among flowering trees, the monasteries offer wonderful oases of peace sprinkled with shrines, chapels and stupas. All is quiet except when the haunting chant of evening prayers rises all around. The former Royal Palace is now a museum, reached along a regal avenue of palms and filled with memorabilia. It was built to replace a wooden palace in the early 20th century, Lao style with a French touch. The gates close late afternoon then it’s time for the night market to set up its stalls along the street, brimming with silk scarves, tribal blankets, ceramics, bamboo lamps, silver and ethnic bags. It’s a great place to sample the local delicacies, from Lao noodles to barbecued fish and fried river moss. Meanwhile, locals and visitors gather on the Phusi Hill to enjoy the most fabulous views over the peninsula, the river Khan and the legendary Mekong turning all shades of gold in the setting sun. Mushroom and Chicken Pot Pies These perfectly portioned individual pies make a filling lunch or supper simply served with steamed vegetables. You can use any mix of mushrooms but it’s worth looking out for packs of mixed exotic mushrooms for extra flavour. Makes 4 Ready in 1 hour

Ingredients:

25g dried porcini mushrooms 25g butter 2 tbsp olive oil 2 shallots, peeled and chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 400g mixed mushrooms, chopped if large 250g chicken breast fillet, diced 200g tub crème fraiche 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 300g puff pastry Beaten egg, to glaze Method: 1 Place the porcini in a heatproof bowl and cover with 150ml boiling water. Leave to soak for 10-15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. 2 Heat the butter and half the olive oil in a large frying pan and fry the shallots for 5 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and fry

for a further 3-4 minutes then stir in all the mushrooms and fry over a high heat until softened. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. 3 Add the rest of the oil to the frying pan and fry the diced chicken for 5-6 minutes until golden brown all over. 4 Drain the porcini mushrooms and add the soaking liquid to the chicken. Bring to the boil then simmer for 5 minutes until reduced. Meanwhile, finely chop the porcini mushrooms and stir into the fried mushrooms and shallots. 5 Return all the mushrooms and shallots to the pan and stir in the crème fraiche and thyme leaves. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Divide the mixture between four individual ovenproof pie dishes. Brush the rims of the dishes with water. 6 Roll out the pastry to about 4mm thickness. Cut out four circles of pastry big enough to fit on top of the dishes with a little pastry overlapping the edges. Drape the pastry circles over the filling. Decorate the tops with leaves cut from the pastry trimmings and brush the pastry with beaten egg. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden.

Word on Wine With the summer being a distant memory, I thought that I would bring some Italian sun to the magazine, with a look at one of Italy’s most well know wines – Valpolicella. Valpolicella is produced in the Veneto region of North East Italy, around Venice. The name Valpolicella is derived from a mix of Latin and Greek as in ‘the valley of many cellars’. The area, like many other wine producing areas of Italy, gained DOC status in 1968. Historically, the area extended from the north west of the city of Verona to the shores of the Po river.

The wine I would like to present to you is Alpha Zeta ‘V’ Valpolicella 2013. The wine is produced by Liberty Wines, who set out to produce a modern, fruit driven wine from the hills outside Verona. Using leading New Zealand winemaker, Matt Thomson, and working with local growers to obtain ripe grapes (small yields and late picking), Matt’s expertise produces a finished wine which preserves the fruit flavours. The vineyards are situated in the Valpantena valley, just outside the city of Verona. Cool currents of air flow down the valley from the Dolomites, which temper the warm sun to produce a moderate climate. This enables the grapes to ripen slowly. The rain and snow of winter allows the underground water reserves to be replenished before the growing season starts. The soil of the area is generally poor and chalky which puts the vines under stress, making them search for the underground waters and helping to produce superior quality fruit. Grapes: 90% Corvina / Corvinone and 10% Rondinella Appearance: Clean - Ruby colour Nose / Aroma: Intense aroma of cherry Taste: Rich cherry pie taste with soft supple tannins; concentrated fruit to a characterful finish. Humour: Facebaby Everyone has their own little Facebook niggles, don’t they? The things that make you say to yourself, ‘Why do I use this website? I’m not even particularly interested in wh-… ooh, Sophie’s put on weight, hasn’t she?!’ Many of these bug-bears have a universal resonance that we’ll all recognise in at least one of our online friends. Take these examples:

The Show-Off There exist in the world people who book expensive holidays to exotic, sun-kissed locations pretty much solely in order to post Facebook pictures of themselves on palm tree-lined beaches on Monday at 9am in the knowledge that their friends will see those photos as they log in to their work computers, bleary-eyed and hungover, and experience crippling Face-Envy. You know who you are. The Smitten You’ve got a new boyfriend. Great. He has scooped you from the relentless pit of misery that has been your life up until this point and is showering you with scented bath-bombs and unexpected trips to Sicily every other fortnight. Bloody marvellous. Do I require comprehensive transcripts of your nauseating love scribblings plastered all over my newsfeed every ten seconds? I quite demonstrably do not. The Evangelist Look. A photo of a kitten. And hey, I’ve stuck it underneath one of them Gandhi quotes, because everyone knows you can’t understand a kitten without Gandhi. And here’s a mountain. Life is for living! Laughter turns your soul into cake! Oh shut up. The Militant Vegan I’d hate to be accused of stereotyping, but in my experience vegans are probably the worst offenders on Facebook. Problem is, you often can’t de-friend them because for some reason they tend to be blood relatives once-removed and such an action would send shockwaves throughout the entire family. But the Militant Vegan’s friends all undergo the same trauma, day in day out, logging on to their newsfeed to find photos of headless baby animals and monkeys in strait-jackets above

tortuously long soliloquies. And the temptation to comment on their sanctimonious diatribes about the unappreciated wonder of the mung bean with the simple phrase ‘OH JUST SOD OFF YOU MINCING HIPPIE’ becomes increasingly difficult to resist. And finally, introducing… The Proud New Parent The Proud New Parent is perhaps the most insidious of the Facebook species, for he or she doesn’t spit or shout or grind axes, doesn’t appear to be a menace, but oh dear lord… menace they are. For they seek to turn Facebook into Facebaby. Every tiny increment of their child’s development will be documented in grisly detail until you begin to feel as if you’re being force-fed a real-time slideshow of their lives. Pop quiz: 1) Do I harbour a creepy interest in the bowel movements of newborn children? No. 2) Bearing this in mind, do I require a gruelling minute-by-minute run-down of the ever-changing rainbow kaleidoscope of dribbly, squitty poo being periodically ejected from your offspring? I won’t patronise you with an answer on that last one. But please do give this some thought, before I’m forced to commit the ultimate act of digital stonewalling and Unsubscribe From Your Feed. The Derby music scene is going from strength to strength, and there are many bands and artists who play a wide variety of music with various influences. I caught up Niall, the lead singer of The Javelins to talk about what they have to offer and what lies in store for the four piece alternative rock band.

1. Tell me a brief history of the band. The band first came together when a friend of Niall’s asked to play the drums on some solo acoustic songs he had made, which later turned out to be their debut EP as The Javelins. Lead guitarist Ben Marshall, bass player Matt Turner and drummer Dan Land soon followed after to make up the rest of the band. They went on to produce a six track album, working on songs which had originally been written for just an acoustic guitar; with the help of local producer Adam Fletcher they were able to pull it off. 2. What genre of music would you say your band is nearest too? It’s a hard question which we get asked a lot. I don’t really think we sound like anybody in particular but we do have a variety of different influences. 3. What are people to expect from coming to a gig of yours? When we play a show, always expect us to be happy playing the music we love. I believe we have a big, unique sound when we play live; there is always something for everyone. We are also all very approachable people; I would hate to think that we’re ‘that band’ who are all like ‘we’re rock and roll so we will stand in a corner and not talk to you!’ We love making new friends at gigs.

7. What’s your favourite thing about being in a band? My favourite thing is probably playing shows as a band. I feel a lot more secure than playing acoustic, almost like I have a unit beside me. It makes me feel good every time we play. 8. What are your thoughts on selling music online and illegal downloads? Do you think CDs and vinyls will be soon a thing of the past, with digital music replacing these formats? I’m all for the selling of music online, it’s easy/cheap and it’s the future as painful as that sounds to some people. I know a lot of people who will still buy CDs and vinyls, but each to their own. Illegal downloading and piracy is another thing, I absolutely hate it and I can’t stand the fact that people still do it! At the end of the day, people will always illegally download music; it’s just one of those things you have to accept as a band.

4. Who are your musical influences? I personally have a passion for more obscure music that people have rarely heard of. My favourite musician of all time is an American musician called Ace Enders who I could talk about for hours, but I won’t bore you! Other current musicians and bands who I listen to are Editors, We Are Scientists, Foo Fighters, Blink 182, The 1975, The White Stripes; basically anything that tickles my fancy. 5. What is the typical song writing/recording process for you guys? I will usually work in my spare time on lyrics and rhythm guitar until I have near enough a full song, then I’ll show it to the guys to see what they think. We will all work together and look at ways of making it the best it can sound as a band, even if it means changing it a bit. Although that is my preferred process as a band, I will never rule out any different ideas for how to write songs. 6. What is the band currently up to? We are working on new songs at the minute and are getting ready to head into the studio/releasing world again. I am hoping that the outcome of this will be a nice surprise to people who have listened to us before.

A relatively easy and mostly level walk; down lanes, across a few fields, then back along the canal towpath. There is also a haunted tea shop, a pub or two, and ghostly stories along the way. The Walk From the car park, turn right and walk towards the canal bridge. Looking over the bridge side to the left there are two pubs, one at the road side next to the bridge and the other a little further along the canal side. Continue ahead along the road towards Great Wilne. On entering Great Wilne the road bends sharp right, at this point there is a wide grassy track way to the left. Follow this track and look for a gate in the fence almost immediately on the left. Pass through this gate into the field beyond, walk the length of the field keeping the hedge to your right, and at the end of the field look for a low stile in the hedgerow ahead. Cross this stile and continue between the hedgerow and a wall. This section is more than a little overgrown but soon exits via a stile into a meadow. This is the most awkward section of the whole walk, only because of its neglected state. Having left the overgrown path

behind, walk across the meadow keeping the hedge to the right. Exit the meadow via a stile in the corner, and then do the same for the next two meadows. Exit the third meadow onto a wide track; follow this for a few yards then bear left along the top of a flood control bank. Continue along the top of this bank to the far side of the field. Just before you leave the flood bank there is a sign: “Do not run in the field with cows.” Take note! Follow the path across the next two fields. The exit from the second field is over a substantial metal barrier with a three step stile. The path continues for a short distance beside conifers before opening into a large field over a more traditional wooden stile. The path in this field is a farm vehicle track. Around half way across the field the track splits, one part continuing ahead and the other to the left to the side of some buildings; take the left path. The challenge in crossing this field is the curious cows. Having spoken with the farmer he said walk at a leisurely pace and they won’t get excited. So as instructed I dropped my pace, and the cows followed me at a distance of about four feet! When I stopped to work out how to exit the field the lead cow licked at my camera bag, I have never been so relieved to exit a field! I bet the farmer is still laughing! Assuming you escape the cows, the exit is by a stile to the right of the gate, then bear right between the old barn and the wall. After a short distance this path brings the walk to the A6 in the

Taking care of traffic, cross the main road and walk down Aston Lane to the left of the Dog and Duck. Follow the lane as it bears left at the mini island. Follow Aston Lane for approximately 200 yards, there is a public foot path sign posted to the left, but it looks overgrown and unused. Ignoring the path, continue along the pavement and turn left into the cul-de-sac section of Aston Lane. The ignored foot path emerges a few meters down this road. The road soon swings to the right and runs parallel to the main part of Aston Lane. Continue down the lane until opposite the last but one house on the left is a gap in the fence through which a solitary white house can be seen. Pass through the gap and walk towards the house. The exit is in the corner of the field to the left of the house. Leave the field over two stiles, climb the steps up the bank to the main road, turn left and cross the A50 by the road bridge. Having passed over the A50 continue along the lane for around a quarter of a mile then turn left into the lane belonging to Hanson Aggregates. At the bottom of the lane a new section to access the aggregate works bears right; continue forward around the large concrete blocks that prevent vehicular access. Cross the old canal bridge and turn immediate left to descend to the towpath.

this down to the boat traffic. Unusually though, I did note several common terns hovering above the canal looking for fish along this section of the walk. At Hoskins Wharf the towpath widens and climbs away from the canal side and its moorings. Just before the bridge is the Old Salt Warehouse and Canal Bank Tea Room (which is said to be haunted). From here it is possible to cross the canal to the Old Clock Warehouse (now a pub and restaurant) or visit the Heritage Centre. To continue the walk, drop back down to the towpath immediately before the building on the left before the bridge. Continue further along the towpath until the Malt Shovel public house comes into view on the opposite bank. Leave the towpath by the stone steps at the next bridge and turn right down the road back to the car park and the end of the walk.

Old Clock Warehouse

The Trent and Mersey Canal is one of the earliest canals built by the engineer James Brindley. It begins within a few miles of the River Mersey near Runcorn, and finishes in a junction with the River Trent in Derbyshire near Shardlow. The canal is just over ninety-three miles long with many points of fine historic interest. Many people hire narrow boats and cruise sections of the canal. To cruise the whole length from Shardlow to Runcorn would take about six days. Walk along the towpath for just over a mile past a lock to Hoskins Wharf. Along the way, note the lack of water fowl along the canal, I put

Footnotes: Why are my toenails so thick? Thick toenails are often assumed to be caused by the growth of fungus under the toenails and in the toenail itself. In many cases, this assumption is correct. However, there are other things that will make a toenail look thick and distorted â&#x20AC;&#x201C; injury to the root of the nail can cause temporary thickening, while severe or repeated injury can cause a nail to become permanently thickened. Skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema may also affect a nail if the skin around the nails is affected. If the problem is being caused by a fungus, there is usually some yellowish or brownish discolouration of the nails.

Topical treatments for fungal toenail infections are often not very effective because they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t soak into thick toenails very well. The challenge is to get the nail as thin as possible and then apply a preparation that has the ability to penetrate down through the layers and contact the fungus. In severe cases I will use a special kind of rotary burr to reduce the nail thickness as much as possible to give the anti-fungal preparation every chance of getting to the root of the problem. This alone usually vastly improves the appearance and comfort of the affected nail or nails.

Short Story: The Dare “I dare you to eat one”. Cole said, holding out a shiny conker. The twins had been collecting conkers as they scrambled through the darkening woods on their way home from swimming. Morgan liked conkers, but he also liked the spiky green casings that he prized them out of; his pockets were full of them. It was such a good dare that Morgan wished he’d thought of it. He was certain conkers were poisonous. And it wasn’t even Cole’s turn to set a dare.

Just yesterday Cole had dared him to stroke Mrs Burgey’s mangy dog. Afterwards Cole had broken the first rule of Dare Club – that no one talks about Dare Club - and told their mother. She’d made Morgan take a shower, and it wasn’t even Sunday. Morgan had been biding his time, waiting to get his revenge. Cole couldn’t be allowed to get away with it, after all Morgan was the eldest by ten whole minutes. “Do you understand exactly what you’re asking?”. He said mysteriously, taking the conker from Cole. “Yeah”. Cole answered, unimpressed. “You know that conkers contain powerful magic don’t you?”. Morgan smiled thinly. Cole pulled a face. “Says who?”. “I saw it on You Tube”. Morgan lied, “This guy ate a conker on a full moon, and he turned into a zombie”. Cole snorted, but could not argue with the authority of You Tube. “His eyes turned green and everything”. Morgan watched Cole closely. There were two things that his brother was scared of – zombies and mushrooms. “Tonight’s a full moon”. He glanced at the sky, “Just so you know what you’re asking”. “Rubbish”. Cole kicked the leaves, “That’s just werewolves”.

“Not there!” Morgan spluttered, “It’s covered in toadstools”. Cole’s rapid inspection of the log gave Morgan just enough to time spit the conker into the leaves, and find what he needed from his pocket. “Now we’re sitting comfortably”. Morgan mumbled with gravity, “I will swallow”. The violent gagging sounds he made as he pretended to swallow impressed even him. “What now?” Asked Cole, wide-eyed. “Now we wait”. Morgan folded his arms and leaned back against the tree. The shadows grew longer and a flock of crows came home to roost. “This is boring”. Cole said, glancing at his watch. The chill evening air had just descended to the forest floor when Morgan chose his moment. He began to cough and shake. He clutched his stomach and moaned. He spat foamy dribble down his coat for dramatic effect. “The magic is beginning to take hold”. He cried, “Run Cole, run, while you still have the chance”. Cole laughed nervously, “Stop mucking around”.

Both boys stared hard at each other. Morgan shrugged,

“The pain, the pain!” Morgan cried, burying his face in his hands. Writhing in agony, he uttered an unearthly moan. Then he took his hands away to reveal himself transformed. His huge zombie eyes were green and covered in gruesome spikes.

“It’s been nice knowing you”. He popped the conker into his mouth. Cole frowned.

Cole turned the colour of concrete, shrieked (like a girl thought Morgan) and ran off, leaving his swimming kit behind.

“You’ve got to swallow it”.

Morgan laughed and took the conker casings out of his eyes. He knew he would get into trouble for this, but just for the moment it was worth it.

“It’s werewolves too”. Morgan raised the conker to his lips. “Still dare me to eat it?”

Morgan indicated a need to sit down. The business of digesting conkers was arduous and shouldn’t be tackled while standing. Cole went to perch on a log,

As the planting season is very much upon us, it is time to take a fresh look at conifers. They’re a lot more versatile and considerably more attractive than you may have realised, and a great way to add colour, texture and living sculpture to your garden 365 days of the year. Yes, these evergreen plants have great garden potential so take a look at some of the great ways that conifers can be used in gardens, with several hundred different cultivars of conifer to choose from in the UK; there really is one to suit every situation! Dwarf Conifers There are many conifers which reach a maximum height of 1m (3ft). These are obviously particularly useful for small gardens and will often add a great extra dimension to a rock garden or a small-scale border. They may need an occasional trimming, but generally hold their shape well. Recommended: Picea abies ‘Little Gem’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Gnome’ , Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Aurea’, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Vilmoriniana’, Picea abies ‘Nidiformis’. Tall and Narrow Conifers Very stylish, many of the columnar or tall, slim conifers look especially stunning when used to create a screen, or to add height to a mixed border or a shrub border. Being rather like a living sculpture they are also good grown as a single specimen tree in a lawn. Recommended: Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Aurea’, Juniperus scopulorum ‘Skyrocket’, Thuja plicata ‘Fastigiata’. Pyramid-shaped Conifers With their relatively wide bases and narrow tops, pyramidal conifers can bring welcome shape, texture and evergreen colour to your garden and if carefully positioned are often useful to hide an eyesore. Recommended: Picea albertiana ‘Conica’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Yvonne’ or Thymus occidentalis ‘Yellow Ribbon’. Spherical Conifers With their prominently rounded shape these conifers naturally produce a sculptured look and are perfect for growing either side of a gateway or house entrance. They also look great in a mixed border, adding colour, texture and interest when many of the other border ingredients are below ground. Recommended: Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Sunset’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Glauca’, Thuja occidentalis ‘Danice’. Ground-cover Conifers Great for hiding low-lying eyesores such as manhole covers, an evergreen groundcover hides them all year long. Conifers for Containers Conifers can look great either on their own (especially when planted with a few small bulbs around their roots, to add splashes of seasonal colour) or in a mixed planting where they help to bring structure, texture and off-season colour. Recommended: Juniperus compressa ‘Compressa’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Ellwood’s Gold’, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Sekkan-Sugi’ , Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Springtime’, Pinus leucodermis ‘Schmidtii’. Conifer Planting and Growing Tips • Make the planting hole a minimum of 1m wide by 30cm deep and incorporate plenty of bulky organic matter such as garden compost, proprietary planting mix or well-rotted manure. • Tease or spread out the roots well and backfill the hole with garden soil mixed with planting compost. • Make sure that only the roots are below the soil surface, water in well. • Keep the soil moist at all times, especially during late spring and summer when drought is likely. • Feed in April using a proprietary fertiliser to keep the growth good and ensure it is a good colour. • Trim conifers regularly but remember if you cut back into old or brown growth you’ll end up exposing all the old growth as they don’t produce dormant buds. Book Reviews Back to the Future ‘Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past’ wrote George Orwell in his classic dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty Four. Gone are the images of hover boards and self-adjusting clothing, and in come repeated ideas that the future could be anything but rosy for the human race. The future may not be fantastic, but the fiction certainly is.

Divergent by Veronica Roth Life is generally considered to be confusing enough for teenagers, but in Veronica Roth’s vision of the future, society has become fragmented into five factions of virtue, and all sixteen year olds must choose that which they want to devote their lives to preserving. Tris needs to make a decision about who to trust and whether or not to leave her family and follow her own path. Then there’s a new love interest, but she’s not sure whether he will in fact protect her or ultimately destroy her. Once the brutality of the initiation is over, is it all worth it and is Tris following the right path? It’s ideal reading for anyone who’s stressing over which university to go to. After reading Divergent, it’ll be a doddle. Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell Long before Davina McCall blasted onto our screens, George Orwell was writing his dystopian classic about Big Brother and Room 101. Written in the past (1949) about the future (1984), that’s now being read in the present (2014, in case you’re not sure!) has actually resulted in the creation of a timeless novel. The fear factor associated with the Ministry of Truth still reigns supreme and the fact that it was supposed to be a commentary on communism doesn’t seem to have dated it one bit. Winston Smith is beavering away in the Record Department, rewriting everything to

suit the ruling party whilst secretly plotting his rebellion. Freedom is life, and Smith is determined that the Ministry won’t determine his future. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K Dick If the plot starts to feel vaguely familiar, it’s because Ridley Scott’s film Blade Runner was based on Dick’s novel. Bounty hunter Rick Deckard is preying on, and ‘retiring’ androids that have short but murderous lifespans, in order to pay his own bills and keep his depressed wife buoyant. In a parallel life, John Isidore is trying to conserve and protect the androids. In this post-apocalyptic world, most animals have been destroyed by the effects of radiation and the scarcity and cost of owning one is where the title comes from. The novel asks all kinds of questions about human emotions and, most importantly perhaps, about empathy. It’s an amazing and intriguing thriller. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley In Huxley’s vision of the future, everyone’s free to take recreational drugs and be as promiscuous as they like. The World Controllers have created the ideal living situation but, true to form, there’s always one who isn’t happy. It’s just all a bit too good. Bernard Marx is searching for imperfections, unconvinced that this contrived society is really making people as happy as they appear. He visits one of the so-called Savage Reservations to try and cure his restlessness. A future story that makes us question the present is always a goodie and shows us why this novel has stood the test of time. 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C Clarke Next time your computer won’t do what you want it to, spare a thought for the crew of the Discovery, who’ve been tasked with finding out why a mysterious monolith found on the Moon, is sending a signal out to Saturn. Their electronic friend is HAL 9000, who seems to have developed feelings and self-awareness, but also slightly murderous tendencies. If you thought space was scary enough, imagine being under the control of a digital psychopath. It’s science fiction at its most intense, with the very existence of human civilisation at risk from homicidal HAL. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld Ever thought how much easier your life would be, if you had been born beautiful? Perhaps you are one who is fair of face and dispute the fact that it’s a walk in the park if you’re gorgeous. In Tally’s world, everyone gets the chance to experience outer beauty - they just need to turn sixteen. The ‘Pretties’ live in a paradise of halcyon days and all the ‘Uglies’ can do is stay in the shadows and wait. But Tally’s friend Shay isn’t so convinced that pretty is the way to go, and she’s found a way out. So the authorities issue Tally with an ultimatum: find Shay and turn her in, or Tally will never turn ‘pretty’ herself.

The Diary of a Local Mum Feeling Sleepy. Some of you may remember my recent tale of the sad demise of our pet hamster, Lulu. The kids were distraught by her passing but keen to have another pet so Lulu was replaced a month or so later by another hamster, Lottie.

Lottie was a very cute looking little thing, but she did not like people and she certainly did not enjoy life in a cage. After just a few weeks and several escapes (the most successful lasting five days and driving me and my husband to the verge of insanity), Lottie quite literally gave up on life in captivity. Her spirit is now no doubt running free in hamster heaven. So, the Great Pet Debate began yet again. No-one was keen on getting another hamster. We ruled out rabbits. Cats were entertained briefly, but the debate kept coming back to the same thing... a dog. Having listed pros and cons, whys and why nots, every problem seemed to have a solution. My husband’s godmother, conveniently (or not, depending which side of the fence you’re on) breeds dogs, so we decided to go for a ‘look’. As if you can take two children to just ‘look’ at puppies! We are now the proud owners of a Shih-poo (yes, it’s a real breed) pup called Benji. Benji is a gorgeous little bundle of fluff. He looks like a teddy bear. He loves fuss, he’s great with the kids, and is the source of much entertainment. He’s definitely part of the family already. There is only one problem... his aversion to going to bed at night. Thankfully the kids have not been disturbed, but for four nights this week we (and our incredibly understanding neighbours) have been kept awake by constant crying... howling... barking... it’s amazing how much noise a tiny dog can make. It is exactly like having a newborn baby. I have been used to this before with both children (neither liked sleep) and I do know that the phase will pass, but when you’re trying to

function on 2-3 hours’ sleep each night it feels as though it’s going on for an eternity. Sleep deprivation, whether it’s caused by a howling puppy, a crying baby, or anything else, is like torture. You begin to feel like a zombie in the day, and your whole evening becomes an anxious build up to the night time. You plan your strategy. You try to keep the offender awake all evening. You make sure they’re fed, watered, warm, happy. You sit with them until they fall asleep and then try to creep out of the room (yes, I’ve resorted to this with both children and puppy!). You try putting them in a cage (puppy, not children – although we did try a stair gate on the bedroom door with the kids, which I suppose is similar!). You end up with them in your bed (children, not puppy. I was dangerously close at times though!). How you’re going to get some sleep that night becomes an obsession which takes over every waking moment. Instead of trusting your instincts and doing what feels right for you and your baby/puppy, it’s very easy to seek advice from everyone you know, or read books and online articles (often at 3am in sheer desperation). You end up with some mish-mashed strategy of everything that may possibly work. You’re tired, fraught and anxious; which unsurprisingly doesn’t help! However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Last night we all slept for a full 8 hours. At 6.30am I leapt out of bed full of energy and life (which believe me is a rarity – I am not a morning person). So how did we achieve this sudden and dramatic turnaround? We did what seemed right. Benji wanted to be near us, so we put his bed at the bottom of the stairs. It’s not what the books said. It’s against all the advice we were given. But it worked; we’re all happy, refreshed, and no longer terrified of bedtime!

Upbeat In this edition of All Things Local we would like to offer some advice to residents on making sure their home is secure as the darker nights draw in. The advice comes as officers tend to notice a trend at this time of year where homes which are empty during the early evenings are more likely to be targeted, as it is easier to see which properties have someone in. Police Community Safety Inspector Russell Dakin said: “Although we live in a low crime area we really don’t want people to become complacent, and so would urge people to take a few steps to help reduce the risk of suffering a burglary at this time of year.”

Residents are advised to take the following precautions to help keep their homes secure: • Always make sure your doors and windows are locked whenever you leave your home, or if you are in the garden or even in another part of the house. • If you go out in an evening, leave a light on and close the curtains.

World War I – Roll of Honour for Belper and Milford George Herbert Strutt gave many benefactions to Belper. To commemorate the sacrifices made during the First World War, he gave the paddock belonging to Green Hall to the people of Belper as a memorial garden. The house, later demolished, which stood at the corner of King Street and Green Lane, had been used at his expense as a Red Cross auxiliary hospital throughout the war years. The Memorial Garden is still much used and enjoyed by the people of Belper, and in it stands the obelisk bearing the names of the servicemen who fell in the war, which was provided by public subscription in 1921. Alderman G. H. Strutt gave Belper Urban District Council a former bank building in King Street as a memorial hall. This now houses the Belper office of Amber Valley Borough Council, and it still bears its plaque commemorating the fallen. George Herbert Strutt wished to provide a fuller description of the men than the list of names on the obelisk, so he commissioned a Roll of Honour in the form of a book in which their names were inscribed along with their regiments and the place of their death. About thirty people helped to find out these details, and Mr Dawson, the art master at the Herbert Strutt School, compiled the finished work. In presenting it to the Belper Urban District Council, the wish was expressed that the book would be displayed from time to time so that the descendants of those brave men could see their names and be reminded of their sacrifice. It was also said that “the roll would endure while there was a Council, and be a perpetual reminder of the men who made the supreme sacrifice.” Belper Urban District Council has long gone, but the Roll of

Honour or Book of Remembrance is now in the care of Belper Historical Society, and has recently been photographed and entered into the records of memorials kept by the Imperial War Museum.

Local History:

It is appropriate, therefore, that as a contribution to the acts of remembrance in the town, this Society has put the Roll of Honour on display in its Robson Memorial Cabinet in St John’s Heritage Centre from the anniversary of the declaration of war on August 4th. A fresh page of names will be shown each month over the next four years. The book can be seen when the Heritage Centre is normally open for Town Council business from 9.30am to 12noon on Mondays to Fridays, and on the last Saturday of the month (except December) when members of the Society are present and can make other pages available for viewing a particular name. Belper Historical Society has a programme of talks at the Heritage Centre on the first Wednesday of the month from 7.30pm. The October meeting will be the AGM and social evening, and the talk on November 5th will be “The Life and Times of a Farrier” given by Doug Bradbury. At the meeting on December 3rd, Gareth King will turn his attention to “Battles in Derbyshire.” All are welcome. The charge to visitors is £1.50. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available at the end of the meeting.

Bereavement Matters Tackling the myths of the Funeral Trade

Although the British are getting better at talking about funerals, there are still many subjects that remain clouded in mystery, which is why we are used to dispelling a number of myths that have built up over the years. One of them concerns where people can or can’t be buried. Is it true, people ask us, that loved ones can be buried at home? Or, if they are an old sailor, can they still be buried at sea? The answer to both questions is yes – albeit it with some conditions. For a home burial, relatives must open a burial register for the property, as they would a cemetery, and they will need to find out where the water table is. And, if their property is mortgaged, they also have to let their lender know. Conditions concerning burial at sea are also restrictive. There are only two places in the British Isles where this is possible and only in certain cases: the coffin also has to be of a special design and the service has to be carried out by a licenced operator.

It is far from straightforward, although it is permitted to scatter cremated remains at sea, as it is on any body of water - as long as it is moving. Then there are the questions about cremated remains. “Will the ashes we get back be the right ashes?” we are asked – and the answer is yes. Crematoria design is totally based upon the need to ensure that each cremation takes place individually and the remains of each person are retained and kept identified at every stage of the process. Nor do people have to scatter the remains, or keep them in an urn. Now you can blast them into the sky on a firework, or turn them into a diamond or even, by grinding a small portion of them into ink, incorporate them in a tattoo. And finally, there is the myth that all funerals need to have a vicar or priest and should be in a place of worship. Whilst a traditional Christian service remains appropriate for many, non-religious celebrants are becoming increasingly popular, and it is also possible, if someone is willing, for funerals to be conducted by the family themselves. Funeral services can, in fact, be held anywhere – from a local social club to a nearby hotel, where friends and family can gather and celebrate a loved ones’ life, without having to file into pews or, if they choose, even without the coffin, which can be committed before the service has begun.
