“Empowering, Enlightening & Educating through the Arts”
Dear Friends of the Auntie Karen: Once again we are in the Koger Center for the 8th Annual Legends Of…Concert Series. Fortunately, we have been blessed to have your support and presence again this year. We welcome each of you with thankful hearts for your interest, contributions and encouragement in helping us to continue to keep the arts alive in Columbia, South Carolina. The planning and preparation of this event have been both exciting and challenging. The excitement was often seen in the eyes of the individuals when we shared who our featured artist was for this year. The excitement also came in the sound of voices and expressions of happiness for the choice of Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. The challenges came with the tough economic times that are very different than what we have experienced in the past; yet, through our faith, we are here to celebrate and have much fun. As co-chairs, we are most grateful to the Auntie Karen Foundation Board of Directors for their commitment and support for this event. Our sponsors keep us anchored with their financial contributions and other services. The volunteers provide unparallel talents, skills and services to the work involved in brining this night forth. You, the patrons and participants, filled the air with joy and appreciation for the wonders of Jazz. We thank each individual and group enormously. Tonight belongs to you. Bask in the atmosphere of the great entertainment that will be performing solely for you. Enjoy!!!!!!! Sincerely,
Sarah Watson and Hope Jeffcoat, Legends Of…2011 Co-Chairs

Background/Summary The Auntie Karen Foundation welcomes you to our eighth annual Legends Of... Concert Series. In 2004, our inaugural event featured Roberta Flack in concert with special guest, The Capital City Chorale. In 2005, we presented Jazz Legend, Dianne Reeves with special guest, The Auntie Karen All Stars, South Carolina’s Finest Musical Talent. Patrons are still raving about Al Jarreau (2006) and Patti Austin (2007). In 2008, we welcomed The Joe Sample Trio and Take 6. While in 2009, we showcased funk Legend, George Duke and jazz vocalist, Rachelle Ferrell. 2010 brought us the singer/songwriter duo, Ashford & Simpson. Tonight we welcome 10 time Grammy Award winner, singer, songwriter, producer, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. The Auntie Karen Foundation created the Legends of...Concert Series to pay tribute to the contributions African American music has made to history. Each year during Black History Month, the series proles a jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel or blues artist who has made a lasting contribution to the history of music. The series places a special emphasis on Jazz Legends. In addition, we have extended our series to include “Legends of...In the Schools”. “Legends of...In the Schools” is a series of art events designed to salute African American Heritage. Events include: Folk Art, Quilting, Dance, Spoken Word, Written Word and Music. Through a partnership with The Columbia Museum of Art, on the last Saturday in January 2011, we will feature some of the best local and regional artists at no cost to the public.

Keyboard, Superior Edwards
Superior Edwards started playing piano when he was eight years old. He was brought up in a lineage of great musicians from his father and mothers side and was named Superior by his father as a self fulfilling prophecy. He started playing in church and by age 12 he was the minister of music for the youth department of Pilgrim Baptist Church. By the age of 16 he was touring around the world with well known artists like Father MC, Jodeci, Brandy, and Mary J. Bilge. Superior has gone on to share the stage with such greats as The Drifters, Nelly, Mariah Carey, Donnie McClurkin, Al Jerreau, Will Downing, Rev. Timothy Wright, the Winans family, and many other well known names in both R&B, gospel, and jazz. Superior now owns and is executive producer of S.I.N.G. Productions label and studio. His solo album “Cole” will debut in February 2011.
Vocalist, John Hobbs
John Hobbs was born in Miami, Florida, but left for Augusta, Georgia at age 6, where he was raised by his grandparents. At age 15, Hobbs gave his life to Christ and was called to minister. He was licensed at the Augusta Deliverance Evangelistic Church, where he spent 20 years under the tutorage of his spiritual father. Pastor Roy Myles. Along with his music, Hobbs has about 27 years of pulpit ministry, preaching and teaching. Hobbs has a rich baritone voice with first tenor range. He is a self-contained performer who plays guitar and piano. His music styling is from A to Z. While his music is deeply rooted in gospel, it is inspired by jazz, pop and adult contemporary music - from traditional to classical. His sound lids been compared to Donny McClurkin and Bebe Winans. This singer, songwriter captures the essence of his love for God and music in the songs he writes. His songs make you fall in love. Later in his music career he was invited to sing at the Southern Baptist Convention with Pastor Jerry Falwell and for Motivational Speaker and Pastor, Bill Maxwell. He has opened for gospel singers such as: Phil and Brenda Nicholas, Babbie Mason, and the Winans. Hobbs continues to make Augusta home and regularly makes guest appearances on a local gospel television show, Club 36, on the Watchman Broadcast. Though Hobbs is tucked away in the rural comfort and tranquility of Augusta, Georgia, he travels often to share the voice, the music and the man with audiences that still appreciate awesome music.
Guitarist, Rodrick “Rod” King
Born in Columbia, SC, Rodrick (or Rod as friends know him) started with music around the age of eleven. The alto saxophone was his firs instrument, but he quickly grew to love the bass guitar after a year. The high school group, Brothers of Soul, out of Manning, SC, was Rod’s introduction to performance and rhythm in a stage setting. Through this spell of life, he has played for weddings, banquets, churches and has learned the value of playing with others and having an ear for music. After completing college, Rod moved to Columbia, SC in 2009 where he currently has been playing for the Tailor Made Band, H2flo Band, and has played for the Drifters, Finesse Band and the Terence Young Experience. He has also produced the music to Dante Lewis’ (national recording saxophonist) album title track “Set the Mood.” Rod has been blessed to perform on the same stage as Marvin Sapp, Jonathan Nelson, Anthony Hamilton, Durrough, and has played on stages such as the Bi-Lo Center, Greenville, SC, Finlay Park, Columbia, SC, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, NY, NY, Maiden Chapel Baptist Church, Maiden, NC, WLTX News, Columbia, SC and Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), Decatur, GA to name a few.
Saxophonist, Jesse “J.J.” Hinnant
Born in Chester, SC September 29th, 1983 came a musician of different character and fortitude. Unlimited by the confines of genre, J.J. reaches the audience and makes them his by playing from a special place in the soul. His ultimate goal is to convey, intimately, his feelings through music and have everyone feel and understand. At the early age of three, J.J. began to show interest in playing music as he watched in his father play the saxophone. Piano is his first learned instrument among many. He will be seen playing piano on Bobby Jones Gospel within a short period of time. As a young and aspiring saxophonist J.J. earned 0ver 150 awards and accolades before graduating high school in 2001. J.J then decided he would hone in on professionalism by playing saxophone in the U.S. Army. J.J. is well traveled; as he started to play abroad at the age of fifteen. Countries toured include: Great Britain, Belgium, Holland, France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Mexico. He is also no stranger to the open seas as he is often employed by various cruise lines to play professionally. Whether the music be Jazz, Gospel, Latin, or blues, J.J.’s mission is to reach and then move you…and he will.

A healthy community is more than just healthy people.
It’s embracing the arts.
That’s why we value the arts and its ability to speak to us in so many ways. It’s how poetry or a painting moves us. It’s when a performance makes us think and feel, and most importantly, connect with each other.
