Ms. Karen Alexander and her staff have done a phenomenal job of enriching the citizens of Richland County and the community with cultural awareness through education and an emphasis on the importance of preservation, which are essential to the development of the County, and especially important to our youth. With each year the Legends of…Concert Series gains more momentum, and this has afforded the foundation more visibility in the community. It has been a blessing to have the Auntie Karen Foundation, an organization that is committed to ensuring we value our worth in our community. Background/Summary The Auntie Karen Foundation welcomes you to our ninth annual Legends Of... Concert Series. In 2004, our inaugural event featured Roberta Flack in concert with special guest, The Capital City Chorale. In 2005, we presented Jazz Legend, Dianne Reeves with special guest, The Auntie Karen All Stars, South Carolina’s Finest Musical Talent. Patrons are still raving about Al Jarreau (2006) and Patti Austin (2007). In 2008, we welcomed The Joe Sample Trio and Take 6. While in 2009, we showcased funk Legend, George Duke and jazz vocalist, Rachelle Ferrell. 2010 brought us the singer/songwriter duo, Ashford & Simpson, 2011, 10 time Grammy Award winner, singer, songwriter, producer, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. Tonight we welcome two Grammy Award winning Legends: Ramsey Lewis (pianist/ composer) and Patti Austin (vocalist) The Auntie Karen Foundation created the Legends of...Concert Series to pay tribute to the contributions African American music has made to history. Each year during Black History Month, the series profiles a jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel or blues artist who has made a lasting contribution to the history of music. The series places a special emphasis on Jazz Legends. In addition, we have extended our series to include “Legends of...In the Schools”. “Legends of...In the Schools” is a series of art events designed to salute African American Heritage. Events include: Folk Art, Quilting, Dance, Spoken Word, Written Word and Music. Through a partnership with The Columbia Museum of Art, on the last Saturday in January 2012, we featured some of the best local and regional artists at no cost to the public. About Us

The Auntie Karen Foundation is a global, nonprofit, 501(c) 3 charitable corporation certified by the state of South Carolina on October 31, 2001. The foundation’s mission is to create and implement a series of reproducible community outreach programs designed to empower, enlighten and educate through the arts. Programs include: Annual Young Entrepreneur’s Conference For the ninth year, this innovative conference held on the campus of Benedict College has brought together youth (ages seven to twenty two) from across the region to foster economic empowerment. Each year, ten young entrepreneurs under the age of twenty five are featured. Auntie Karen’ s Place TV Pilot: Auntie Karen’s Place The Auntie Karen Foundation partnered with SC ETV and Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital to produce a 30-minute DVD that uses puppets and music to provide a simple way to explain life skills such as: health, emergency preparedness, jazz music and financial literary. The Foundation received a grant from the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia and SC Competitive Grants program. Artpreneur/Technopreneur Classes The purpose of the Artpreneur/Technopreneur classes is to “inspire a new generation of business leaders through arts and technology”. Classes include: visual art, dance, creative cooking, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, spoken word and etiquette. The Auntie Karen Foundation’s Artpreneur pilot program started in 2003. Hugs From Carolina The Auntie Karen Foundation partnered with Auntie Karen Inc. and City Light Inc. to create Hugs From Carolina. Hugs From Carolina, a division of Hugs Around The World, has Olivia The Octopus spreading hugs to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. The program was launched in Biloxi, Mississippi on October 14, 2005. Children were given an adoption kit which included: an Olivia The Octopus Hand puppet and the book “Olivia Gave A Hug Today”. Once again, Olivia and City Light Inc. joined forces with a Hugs Campaign in Saluda, SC. Legends of...(A Salute to Black History) The Auntie Karen Foundation pays tribute to the contributions of African Americans with the Legends of...Programs. Each year, the celebration includes: Black History Program with The Columbia Museum of Art, The Legends of...Master Class with CSAM (Center for Southern African American Music at USC) and The Legends of...Concert & Silent Auction (Koger Center) Gordon’s Garden The Gordon’s Garden Program was created to teach kids about healthy living habits. Gordon, an original Auntie Karen character, is an overweight, purple Jamaican Yam. The Jamaican Yams are used to teach healthy living skills to youth via music, books and DVDs. The fear that Gordon’s weight and eating habits are putting him at risk for developing diabetes was the inspiration for the garden. Auntie Karen’s character Olivia The Octopus is an International Jazz Diva. The Hugs Around The World campaign was created to have Olivia travel the world giving hugs. To date Olivia has traveled to Brazil, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Japan, Holland, Ghana and Nigeria.

Gordon’s Garden is a part of the Auntie Karen Foundation Healthy Living Initiatives. Gordon is one of the Auntie Karen Foundation’s Jamaican Yams. Yusef and Yolanda are Whipper and Mya’s parents. Whipper is Gordon’s best friend. Whipper’s parents fear that Gordon’s weight and eating habits are putting him at risk for developing Diabetes. To help Gordon, they are planting a garden; giving Gordon access to fresh vegetables will help him eat healthier foods. Working in the garden will help Gordon get some needed exercise. Ramsey Lewis & Patti Austin Ramsey Lewis

Ramsey Lewis is a jazz pianist and multi-instrumentalist, and composer who has released approximately 80 albums over a 50-year career. After several years of live performances and over a dozen albums which only caught the attention of jazz fans, the Ramsey Lewis Trio made a huge impression on mainstream audiences with the 1965 album The In Crowd. The title-track was a No.5 pop hit, and the album reached No.2. Moving further towards a pop version of Jazz, Wade In The Water and Hang On Sloppy the following year were also commercial successes. His most successful album of the 70s was Sun Goddess, which was performed with the backing of members of Earth, Wind & Fire. It was his fourth album to be certified gold, and is still popular today with funk DJs and hip-hop samplers. This three time Grammy Award winner has an extensive, diverse career. In addition to his work as a performer, composer, educator, and disc jockey, Lewis has received five honorary doctorate degrees, won the National Endowment for the Arts’ Jazz Master Award in 2007, and is one of the few noted jazz artists to carry the Olympic Torch, having briefly escorted the flame as it passed through Chicago en route to the 2002 Winter Games.

Patti Austin

In 2008, fifty-three years after getting her first record contract, Patti Austin was awarded her first Grammy, winning Best Jazz Vocal Album for Avant Gershwin. A professional since the age of five, Patti Austin was a protégé of Dinah Washington and Sammy Davis, Jr. A 1969 single for United Artists titled “Family Tree” cracked the R&B Top 50. Austin cut her debut LP, End of a Rainbow, for Creed Taylor’s CTI label in 1976, followed by Havana Candy in 1977 and Body Language in 1980. She sang lead vocals for Japanese koto player Yutaka Yokokura on “Love Light” in 1978, did a duet with Michael Jackson on “It’s the Falling in Love” for Off the Wall, and sang “The Closer I Get to You” on Tom Browne’s album in 1979. Austin dueted with George Benson on “Moody’s Mood for Love” in 1980. She sang backgrounds for sessions by Houston Person, Noel Pointer, Ralph McDonald, Angela Bofill, and Roberta Flack. Austin did vocals on Quincy Jones’ The Dude LP in 1981, and was featured on the hit “Razzamatazz.” She inked a solo deal on Jones’ Qwest label, and her 1982 LP Every Home Should Have One included the number one pop hit (number nine R&B) “Baby, Come to Me,” which got widespread exposure via the ABC soap opera General Hospital. The follow-up single, “How Do You Keep the Music Playing,” was the theme for the film Best Friends. Both songs paired Austin with James Ingram. She continued recording for Jones’ Qwest label through the ‘80s, but couldn’t recapture her pop or R&B success, despite working with several top producers, including Jam&Lewis in 1985. Austin switched to GRP in 1990 and recorded Love Is Gonna Getcha, with the singles “Through the Test of Time” and “Good in Love.” She subsequently recorded Carry On and Live in 1991 and 1992. Street of Dreams followed in 1999 and On the Way to Love appeared in summer 2001. Her lovely tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, For Ella, appeared in spring 2002. Nearly five years later, Avant Gershwin was issued. After a decade on the jazz side of the fence, Austin returned more to the pop side with 2011’s Sound Advice, produced by Greg Phillinganes.

Reggie Sullivan, Bassists Reggie Sullivan received his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of South Carolina in 2006 and has since become one of the most-requested musicians in Columbia, SC. He has performed with musical legends such as Marian McPartland, Olivia Newton-John, Wycliffe Gordon, Herlin Riley, Chris Potter, Yuseef Latif, Ron McCurdy, Howard Hewitt, Randy Crawford, Joe Sample, and the Jazz Crusaders. Reggie has appeared in several local ETV broadcasts and national television series, most recently as a band member for Wynona Judd. He has also toured internationally with well-recognized jazz artists and legends. You can find him working worldwide as a freelance bassist or regionally with the John Wesley Satterfield band. Reggie currently lives in Columbia, SC.

Jermaine “Hollywood” Jackson, Bassists Jermaine “Hollywood” Jackson is a band founder and bassist from Aiken, South Carolina. Jermaine saw a vision of excellence and set out to establish the sound and feel of Chemistry. Jermaine, being a true leader, incubated the band for over a year until he felt it was ready to emerge as the sound of Chemistry! His bass skills are impeccable, touring with groups like Bill Pickney & The Drifter, The Platters, Keith Sweat, Tony Terry and renowned gospel artist such as Doc McKenzie. Jermaine is a musical force to be reckoned with!

Jenna McSwain-Pianist and Vocalist Jenna McSwain earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado. In addition to being one of the most sought-after musicians in Columbia, she is an active arranger and composer, with arrangements published by UNC Jazz Press. Jenna serves as an instructor of jazz studies at the University of South Carolina and at Northwest College while maintaining a large studio of voice and piano students both in South Carolina and nationwide via Skype. Jenna has performed in clinics and concerts with Marian McPartland, Mundell Lowe, Kerry Marsh, Julia Dollison, Paul McKee, Bert Ligon and Craig Butterfield. She has been featured in the South Carolina Jazz Festival, the TIAA-CREF All-Star band, the University of Minnesota Morris Jazz Camp and the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival, where she opened for Patti Austin in 2010 and for the New York Voices in April 2011. In addition to leading her own group, she performs locally and nationwide with The Pink Ivories, The Reggie Sullivan Project, the Columbia Soul Revue and the Think Jazz Orchestra.

Christopher Andrews - Saxophonist Christopher G. Andrews is an accomplished jazz musician specializing in Saxophone performance. Christopher is well trained in classical and jazz literature, a successful facilitator of master classes and has performed in various concert venues. His music has distinctive influences from the likes of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins. Christopher is not only a great performer, he has received a formal education to further master his craft. Christopher obtained his MMA- Masters of Jazz Studies & Performance from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC and a Bachelor of Arts- Music Industry from South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, SC. Christopher is the Founder and Band Leader of Christopher Andrews Jazz . He is also a Free Lance Performer and has worked with artists such as Wycliffe Gordon Sextet, Fred Wesley and the New JB’s, Roland Haynes Quintet and The Skip Pearson Foundation. Christopher is the featured saxophonist on The Bhaki Project, recorded at the 13th Annual Hartsville 2010 Jazz Event. He has also preformed privately for Kenny G during an event sponsored by Famous Film Maker, John Silver. In May 2011, Chris along with Modus Bone performed for the private opening event of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, Charleston, SC. Roderick Johnson - Drummer Roderick Johnson is a drummer extraordinaire from Orangeburg, SC. He has been playing drums 17 of his 24 young years. Roderick grew up playing drums in church and later expanded into other areas of music. There is not a style of music that he cannot play. Rock, Country R&B and Beach are just a few styles that Roderick has mastered. Roderick’s musical style is influenced by artists such as Ed Thigpin, Tony Williams, Aaron Spears and famed local drummer, John Blackwell. Roderick says “I am a professional striving for perfection by learning more each day.”

The Resonance String Quartet

The Resonance String Quartet was established in 1991 by two college friends who studied music education at the University of South Carolina. Karen Thompson, Audrey Harris, Nicole Neely, and Idris Chandler are the current members of the ensemble. The quartet members have over 25 professional years of experience. They are two teachers, one guidance counselor, and one assistant principal who come together to perform with The Long Bay Symphony in Myrtle Beach, Florence Symphony in Florence, The Augusta Symphony in Augusta, Ga., and The South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra. The quartet members have also performed with legendaries such as Lou Rawls, Ray Charles, and Olivia Newton-John. The Resonance String Quartet is an all occasions ensemble. They provide services for weddings, receptions, birthdays, retirement celebrations, etc.

! What kind of times are these that turmoil, tornadoes and terrorists capture the news day in and day out?" Is there peace in the midst of all this?" King David summed it up well in Psalm 31." When surrounded by enemies, his trust in God rings out through the ages as he appeals for deliverance, “…You are my refuge." Into your hands I commit my spirit…” Sound familiar?" Jesus also spoke these words on the cross (Luke 23: 45)." With the coming of the Holy Spirit, I am to be as He was in the world - like Stephen at his martyrdom when he used the same words from Psalm 31 (See Acts 7:59)." Stephen mirrored Jesus at his death when he cried out, “Do not hold this sin against them (his persecutors)." How does this apply to me today in the 21st century amidst the circumstances of antiChristian forces?" Psalm 31: 13 – 14:" But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, “You are my God.”" My times are in your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me.”" Complete trust in a God who loves me is to be my attitude."

I John 4: 10:" “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”" Propitiate is a verb meaning to regain the favor of" (a god, spirit, person) by doing something that pleases them." Propitiation is a noun, which is the action of propitiating or appeasing a god, spirit, or person. Now, it is clear." Jesus willingly appeased God’s anger against evil while Jesus was dying on the cross." Sin and judgment reckoned with and God’s love demonstrated in the same act!" How brilliant!" Finally, God has done everything necessary to save the human race from experiencing His judgment against evil." " According to John 1: 9, Jesus is the Light that lights every man, even Usama bin Laden, who comes into the world." Here are the options:" Either I accept God’s provision or I have to pay! In other words, I could end up, although it is not God’s desire, just like Usama bin Laden!"
