About the Cover: Since 1992, Lisa Curry Mair has created floorcloths, fireboards, table runners and other painted canvas items for homes throughout the United States and Canada. From a degree in Mathematics, to children’s book illustration, to research in historical aspects of early American life, all paths have led to a career in designing, crafting and painting functional canvas surfaces with a strong geometric element reminiscent of a bygone era. Lisa creates her work in the carriage-house wing of an 18th century farmhouse at the base of Ascutney Mountain in the town of Weathersfield, Vermont.

Our Towns
Rekindle your spirit....
The Okemo Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce is the voice of our members and the business communities in the Towns of Andover, Cavendish, Chester, Ludlow, Mount Holly, Plymouth and Weston, Vermont.
Andover
Chester
This Andover is named for the Connecticut town, which in turn was named for the one in Massachusetts. The town was nearly twice its present size when it was granted in 1761. However, a ridge of highlands (including the aptly named Terrible Mountain) made it virtually impossible to get from one side of town to the other, so the western portion was made into the separate town of Weston in 1799. Today the lovely town of Andover is home to many vibrant Vermont artisans, small authentic farms, and even a hot air balloon maker!
Nestled between Bromley, Magic, Stratton, and Okemo, located just west of the junction of Route 11 and 103 on Route 11, Chester is a town full of beautiful architectural treasures surrounded by unspoiled countryside. Lodging and dining, from elegant to homey, will make you glad to have found a thriving town that has not lost its sense of history and place. Nominated as one of the prettiest “Painted Places” in America, the charming village of Chester offers a number of shops with distinct personalities and a pretty village green.

Town office: 802-875-2173
Cavendish
Ludlow
Located along Route 131 and comprised of two villages, Proctorsville on the western end of Route 131 and Cavendish further to the east, several glimmer stone houses and numerous small businesses mark the two villages. Cavendish offers spring trophy trout fishing and kayaking along the scenic Black River. Proctorsville offers exquisite biking along unadulterated back roads and Route 131 as it winds along the river. Beautiful fall vistas of Vermont farm fields as well as hiking in state forests make for great year-round recreation.
Located at the junction of Route 100/103, this 150+ year old village began life as a mill town powered by the sparkling Black River. Chartered in 1761 when Seth Lee claimed his lot and settled on what is now Pond Street (Main Street). Today, the adorable town of Ludlow is the thriving four-season town in the heart of the Okemo Valley with shops, galleries, exceptional dining, a haven of lodging choices, and lots of things to do. Ludlow is home to Okemo Mountain Resort, a perfect year-round playground with worldclass amenities.

Mount Holly
Weston
Mount Holly is comprised of a group of small villages. The most recognized is Belmont, located west of Route 103N. This small village is located along the shore of breathtaking Star Lake. The village is anchored by a general store, as well as beautiful historic and contemporary homes. Mount Holly prides itself on several special annual events: the Fourth of July Celebration; Artfest, held the 1st weekend in August on the Village Green; Cider Days over Columbus Weekend; and monthly community dinners at Odd Fellows Hall from April through October.
Incorporated in 1799, Weston was originally part of Andover but the ridge created by Markham and Terrible Mountains made it impossible to get from one side of town to the other. Located on Route 100, 5 miles north of Route 11 in Londonderry and 10 miles south of Ludlow, Weston is virtually untouched by time, the entire village is on the National Register of Historic Places. Home of The Vermont Country Store, The Weston Playhouse and the famous Weston Priory (a Benedictine monastery), and one of the most picturesque village greens in Vermont.
Town office: 802-259-2391
Town office: 802-824-6645
Plymouth Located on Route 100/100A, Plymouth is comprised of two small villages, Plymouth and Plymouth Notch, virtually unchanged since 1923, when in the old family homestead, Vice President Coolidge was sworn in as the 30th President of the United States. Historic Plymouth Notch is carefully preserved; the village church, general store, cheese factory, and community dance hall that served as the 1924 Summer White House. Plymouth is also home to the enchanting and unspoiled Coolidge State Forest offering seasonal campsites and trails for hiking. Town office: 802-672-3655

Weston Playhouse By Stuart Duke

ermont is famous for its outdoor activities, but the Green Mountain State is also home to an equally vibrant arts landscape. From art museums, crafts and music festivals to theatres, puppetry and even circuses, Vermont has plenty to excite your cultural palette. At the heart of southern Vermont’s arts scene is the venerable Weston Playhouse Theatre Company. Having recently celebrated it’s 75th anniversary, Vermont’s oldest professional theatre is a living testament to a community’s belief in the arts. In 1935, while the Great Depression was raging, Weston-born architect Raymond Austin was putting the finishing touches on a playhouse that one Boston Globe critic would dub “the most beautiful theatre in New England.”

The theatre company draws enthusiastic crowds to the Playhouse each summer to enjoy world-class plays and musicals. Recent Weston productions include Les Miserables, Hairspray, The Full Monty, Rent, and Death of a Salesman featuring Chistopher Lloyd. Each show is rehearsed and produced right in the tiny village of Weston. The actors, creative team and technical crew that gather in Weston each summer create a special community of artists. The theatre company has garnered the attention and acclaim of The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Playbill, The BBC, Variety and countless others. In recent years Weston has expanded its reach by playing an important role in the development of new plays and musicals for the American theatre. With deep roots in its Vermont coummunity, Weston continues to extend its branches into the theatrical firmament.

other Nature needs us to teach what has been forgotten.” Sarah Seward of Sweet Earth Farm is
bringing her motto to life on her lush, 26-acre meadow farm overlooking the sparkling Mill River in Mount Holly, Vermont. Generations of farmers before her tended their fields, milked their cows and served their communities knowing the value of their labor and their land. Sarah is living these values today. Sweet Earth farm is a celebration of diversity, sustainability and sustenance. Their year-round farm stand features pastured meats, mixed vegetables, raw milk and eggs; but that’s only the beginning. Sweet Earth Farm is a farm with vision and inspiration in abundance! Sarah’s dream is to sustain the farm with a thriving micro-dairy where they can produce butter, yogurt, cheese and other artisan dairy products.

She is also offering a bountiful farm education component providing on-farm workshops in homestead crafts, and essential farming skills for kids and adults. To kick off their summer season, Sweet Earth Farm is launching their Working Hands Summer Farm Camp for children ages 5 -10. Kids will play and learn in the gardens and along the river, explore the wildlife and ecology of a working farm and valley landscape, enjoy pottery, nature art projects, fishing, caring for farm animals, hiking and more!

Weston By Michael Feiner
Where History, Art and Nature Collide
“It’s hard to know what’s more beautiful, the antiques or the surroundings.”

T
he village of Weston, is history personified. Tucked along the pristine waters of the West River with lush green mountains rising on all sides, the valley is the perfect mix of charm, ease and elegance. Classic houses overlook the village green; turn of the century churches appear untouched by time; brooks cascade over old mill stone work; quaint country shops, fine art 48
galleries, historic museums, theaters, and the resplendent, tranquil Weston Priory—home to Benedictine monks—all combine to create the ideal vacation destination. Spring, summer and fall, hike, bike or tour the miles of scenic back roads laced through the mountains. Boat, swim, or fish in the pools along the West River or play golf at any one of the five courses within a thirty-minute drive. Okemo Valley Regional Guide
Weston’s celebrated country inns and bed and breakfasts provide unsurpassed comfort and hospitality, while you enjoy all the beauty the Okemo Valley has to offer. Throughout the summer season, the village is serenaded at the Sundays on the Hill Concert Series. Families gather on the lawn amongst the maples and birch to hear the latest creations from Weston’s Kinhaven Music School, or visiting artists presenting everything from authentic Latin and Jazz, to full choral ensembles and piano concertos. Not to be outdone, the village is home to the legendary Weston Playhouse, a living testament to Vermont’s tradition of vibrant arts and culture. This award-winning theatre company serves 30,000 theatre-goers annually, is home to Vermont’s oldest professional theatre company, and it also serves as host to the renowned Weston Antiques and Weston Craft Shows in October every year.
Weston Antiques Show
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 5, 6, and 7, as Vermont’s fall foliage season reaches its extraordinary peak, distinguished antiques dealers throughout New England, and from across the country, converge in Weston to display the finest in American and English furniture, accessories, Americana, folk art, silver, samplers, paintings, oriental rugs, jewelry and more! The Weston Antiques Show boasts the countries top dealers and experts in heirloom arts and antiquity. The three-day event will be preceded by a not-to-bemissed Gala Preview fund-raiser. Starting at 5pm on Thursday, October 5th, $50 includes unique show previews, hors d’oeuvres, wine, and show readmission.
Weston Craft Show
Only a week later, the spectacular Weston Craft Show takes the stage October 12, 13, and 14. Twice voted “One of Vermont’s top ten fall events,” by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, this juried exhibition of exceptional Vermont artisans, features exquisite works in ceramics, decorative fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, paper, wearable art, and wood. The Weston Antiques and Craft Shows are presentations of the Weston Community Association. All proceeds from the shows are used to preserve and enhance the historic properties it maintains: the Weston Playhouse, the Museums of Weston and Cold Spring Brook Park. For more information, to make reservations or find the perfect accommodations, call (802) 228-5830, or visit the Okemo Valley Chamber of Commerce website at yourplaceinvermont.com.

A
t the peak of Vermont’s preeminent fall foliage, the charm and elegance of the Chester Village Green will come to life as it hosts the 38th Annual Fall Craft Festival. Chosen as one of the “Most Beautiful Villages of New England,” the Chester Village Green is surrounded by an absolutely delightful array of historic architecture dating back over 200 years, and quaint, country necessities like quintessential country stores, antique shops, art galleries and more! The Chester Annual Craft Fair is a celebration of Vermont’s gifted artisans, Chester’s unique history, Vermont’s matchless beauty and its timeless, rural traditions. Over 70 artisans, craftspeople and tantalizing food purveyors from across Vermont and New England, will grace the green with their stories, skills and exquisite wares. Handmade designer jewelry, local woolens, distinctive glassware, fine woodworking, pottery, photography, maple products, ice cream and much, much more! Relax under the village green’s broad maple canopy while checking out the many wonderful vendors, expert demonstrations and mouth-watering treats from local farms and specialty producers. Conveniently located only 10 miles off Interstate 91, step back in time to a place of quiet serenity, remarkable beauty and fun for the whole family. Make your lodging reservations today at one of Chester’s celebrated country inns, cozy bed and breakfasts or nearby hotels. This fall, take the back roads through the maple studded Okemo Valley and enjoy what Calvin Coolidge called, “the loving breast of our everlasting hills.”

t’s true, you won’t find any billboards in Vermont; not because we have nothing to advertise, far from it, but because even a billboard can’t provide enough room to say everything we’d need to say about the extraordinary local businesses and wealth of services the Okemo Valley has to offer.
Trust. Honesty. Integrity. Quality.
These aren’t things you can display on a billboard, they’re things you have to experience first hand. The Okemo Valley takes great pride in the wide array of family-owned businesses and local professionals serving our area. When you need a mechanic you can trust, a therapeutic massage or a socially responsible plumber at sunrise, a local professional is just a phone call away. From LEED certified builders for renovation or new construction, to cutting edge health professionals, or environmentally conscious wedding planners, you can trust the businesses built on the spirit, pride and dedication of providing exceptional service and quality. Feel free to contact the Chamber at 802-228-5830 for a recommendation, or check out the website at www.yourplaceinvermont.com for a complete listing of local services.

Join Us This Winter! In the Okemo Valley
Wonderland
A Winter
Awaits
A
s early as October, the first flakes arrive. And with the first dusting of snow comes the giddy anticipation of the longest and (some would argue) the most beloved season in the region. Our friends down south catch wind that winter is upon us, and thus begins a busy, but very happy time. If you’ve been here in the winter, you know the joy that comes from getting out in the woods or up on our mountain and letting loose! For a string of days, you can forget about work, forget about your worries, enjoy the company of your friends and family, and simply PLAY. With the 200 or so inches of snow that grace our landscape every year, comes the opportunity to strap on skis, slip into snowshoes, hop on snowmobiles, cross-country ski in peaceful woods and experience the exhilarating thrill, the peaceful tranquility of becoming one with Mother Nature. From the top of Okemo Mountain, to the depths of our forests, a winter wonderland awaits you. So come back and see us when the green turns to white. It’s amazing how a blanket of snow will warm your soul. 80 80 80
