4-Season Recreation with SURPRISES along the Way

From angling and paddling to cycling and hiking, Cavendish and its village of Proctorsville are built around the natural environment.

KICK BACK AND 6

RELAX IN CAVENDISH.

Okemo Valley Regional Guide

www.YourPlaceInVermont.com/Cavendish

Beautiful Views with Rich Habitat The peaceful waters of summer are cooled by a green canopy burgeoning from its banks; follow Route 131 along the river or take a jaunt on a back road where forests, meadows, and rolling vistas emerge. Autumn paints the valleys in a breathtaking quilt of red, orange, and yellow, while winter’s crystalline contrasts are more absolute. The Hawks Mountain Wildlife Management Area, 2,183 pristine acres of land conserved in Cavendish, is home to many species of northern New England creatures. Hikers and snowshoe enthusiasts will see evidence of deer, turkeys, and songbirds in season; pickerel frogs, salamanders, and turtles may be present. The fortunate observer may even spot a moose, black bear, bobcat, or peregrine falcon, all of which have been identified in this northern hardwood forest. Glistening Villages The villages of Cavendish and Proctorsville are marked by small businesses and a number of houses faced with “glimmer stone,” which glisten with locally mined mica schist. Inspired by nature and borne by tradition, serenity is woven into the fabric of the village, expressed in shops like Six Loose Ladies. A wide variety of yarn and fiber lines the shelves of the knitting boutique which features locally sourced, hand-spun and dyed Alpaca, Shetland, and Icelandic skeins in warm, earthy tones. Castle Resort & Spa As Proctorsville diffuses toward Okemo Mountain, the Castle Resort and Spa rises from the hills. The immaculate estate is characterized by luxuriously appointed castle rooms, a hotel, suites, ballrooms, and resort homes. Toll free 866.216.8722 l Local 802.228.5830

Chester Unique shopping, antiques & galleries in a walkable downtown.

Chester may well be the prototype for the quintessential, historic New England village. Tucked into the hills between Bromley, Magic, Stratton, and Okemo mountain resorts, Chester first achieved fame in the late 1700s for its location at the crossroads of Northern New England’s north-south and east-west 8

stagecoach lines. Okemo Valley Regional Guide

www.YourPlaceInVermont.com/Chester

A destination for historians, outdoor enthusiasts, & artists Buzzing with activity, Chester once processed grist, lumber, oil, cotton, wool, and leather in more than twenty factories, mills, and tanneries. At the end of the day, beverages flowed steadily in six taverns and a distillery in this thriving center of colonial commerce. Steepled churches sprang up on the village green, grand Victorian homes dignified the streets, welcoming shops adorned the town center, and classic New England architecture took up residence in Chester. Creativity is EASY to spot! Now the home to eclectic galleries, contemporary arts, antique shops, boutiques, pubs, and restaurants, Chester accommodations range from simple to sophisticated. The Fullerton Inn and Inn Victoria are hubs for this four-season community of outdoor enthusiasts and artists. Where the Past Meets The Present The past comes alive at Inn Victoria, where overnight guests and visitors may enjoy High Tea. With more than 30 flavors of tea accompanied by savories, sweets, scones, chocolates and fruit, the delightful afternoon respite is served by a formally attired gentleman from the Victorian era. Nominated as one of the “Prettiest Painted Places” in the United States, Chester is a destination for special events.

MUST

SEE S !

Chester features a variety of attractions, such as the impeccably restored Victorian train depot, Chester Historical Society, and cemeteries. The Stone Village, located to the north of the town center, features a collection of pre-Civil War residences constructed from local glimmerstone granite. Whether passing through like the stagecoach travelers of old or relaxing into historic New England, Chester is a town with character.

Mount Holly

16 Okemo Valley Regional Guide

www.YourPlaceInVermont.com/MountHolly

Journeying along the Crown Point Military Road established by the Revolutionary War, early Americans established dwellings in four 18th-century regional encampments, Hortonville, Tarbellville, Healdville, and Mechanicsville (now Belmont). These villages, as well as land added from nearby Wallingford and Ludlow, now comprise the town of Mount Holly, chartered in 1792. Museum displays recount colonial era life, including an 1849 ceremony in which the last railroad spike was driven to connect Burlington, Vermont, to Boston. The Museum is open to the public and features summer programs and special events. Mount Holly’s role in Vermont’s agricultural history is also illustrated by the farm and tool collections in the Will White Blacksmith Shop, also on the green in Belmont. Prior to refrigeration, village dairies were as integral to early American life as farriers and blacksmiths, creating delicious aged cheese from excess milk and reaching markets in the urban centers of New York, Boston, and Maine. Centuries ago, every Vermont village had at least one cheesemaker; Mount Holly is home to America’s oldest cheesemaker, Crowley Cheese, built in 1882 of classic post-and-beam construction. Enjoy Crowley samples from classic sharp cheddar to garlic chive, watch cheese being made, and visit the gift shop year ‘round.

Plymouth Plymouth Notch & The President Calvin Coolidge Birthplace: Pure, Authentic Vermont.

Annual Plymouth Folk & Blues Music Festival, Labor Day Weekend

18 Okemo Valley Regional Guide

www.YourPlaceInVermont.com/Plymouth

Folded into the hills of Plymouth Notch, the President Calvin Coolidge birthplace and boyhood home, is a 19th century time capsule. Comprised of more than a dozen buildings, the pristine, immaculately preserved National Historic Landmark offers insight into the President’s childhood as well as a window into the life and culture of a Vermont farming community a hundred years ago. The quiet village is a destination for Nordic skiers in the winter, and in warmer months, the village is an open book. The homestead tells a story of an existence that was necessarily simple and thrifty. The President’s birthplace and –family home covers the bare essentials for individuals who were much smaller in stature than today; similarly, the pews at the church and school spare no comfort. The barn showcases farming equipment, carriages, and snow rollers that compressed the snow, rather than plowing it aside as in modern days. Shop the general store with keepsakes from the site as well as penny candy and amusements; up the stairs is the large vaulted dance hall that served as the 1924 summer office of the White House. Plymouth Notch is peaceful in the winter, and the Visitors’ Center and the Plymouth Cheese Company are open weekdays, year ‘round. Talk personally with President Coolidge through interactive exhibits; browse the gift shop and take in sweeping views of the silent valley. Photo on left by Nicole Graves

Weston

& Andover, Classic New England at its finest

M

ountains have a way of quietly weighing in on mundane human life through the creation of barriers. The burg of Andover,

was comprised of the areas surrounding Markham and Terrible Mountains until necessary travel across the highlands became too burdensome.

20 falls Okemo Regional Guide in Weston,www.YourPlaceInVermont.com/Weston The at Valley The Old Mill Museum Vermont during autumn.

In 1799, this geological boundary manifested in an administrative divide; the western part of Andover, which had been known as “West Town,” became Weston and two separate towns were born. Recognized for its stories, preservation, and architecture, most of Weston Village is a designated National Historic District. Home to the original Vermont Country Store and the Weston Playhouse, with its town green, impeccably maintained whitewashed dwellings, charming waterfall in the center of town, and barnred buildings, Weston is a classic New England at its finest. The best way to see the town is on foot; during warmer months, the town hosts periodic historic walking tours. Across the square is the Weston Playhouse, created in 1935 during the depths of the Great Depression and viewed by many as a symbol of hope. Vermont’s oldest professional theatre company welcomes locals and visitors to enjoy world-class musicals and dramas throughout the summer theatre season. The Playhouse also presents opera, juried arts and crafts shows, and special events and concerts throughout the balance of the year. Weary shoppers and theatre-goers will appreciate a respite at the Inn at Weston or the Colonial House Inn. The Inn at Weston is within walking distance from the green, where gracious guestrooms, romance, and a candlelit dining room unite for a delightful escape.

ermont’s four seasons provide the backdrop for some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Approaching the town of Ludlow on scenic route 100 near the junction of route 103 and Okemo Mountain, sits a charming 19th century red and black barn with a delightful surprise. A peek through a window on the ground floor hints at what lies inside. Walk in the front door and enjoy the unmistakable smell of real wood and then be amazed at the extraordinary beauty of the furniture on display. Once home to dairy cows, newborn calves, kittens, and farm tools, the barn is now filled with handcrafted wood furniture, upholstery, lighting and more. Meander and touch the wood pieces (everyone loves to glide a hand over our 68 Okemo Valley Regional Guide

finishes). Sit in our signature Clearlake dining chairs or our ultra comfortable Coolidge rocking chair. A popular wood choice for our Coolidge rocker is Vermont tapped maple, the tap holes were originally drilled in the tree for the purpose of gathering sap to make maple syrup. Woods such as oak, cherry, walnut, curly maple, Bubinga, Wenge, and others are used to make items ranging from end tables, coffee tables, beds, dressers and desks. Also on display is an island to help with planning your own kitchen, with a Vermont Verde antique marble top (quarried only in Vermont). Several barstools as well as hutches, bookcases and sideboards are also shown. Dining tables in many sizes and shapes are extremely popular with and without leaf options. www.YourPlaceInVermont.com/shopping

clearlakefurniture.com Walking down stairs you are able to witness the transformation of raw wood into works of art and functionality. Craftsmen are intently working at their benches making heirloom quality furniture the old-fashioned way. At one bench a craftsman is carefully inserting inlay into a table top. Nearby, another is working on tenons for a set of chairs. Move along and see the beginnings of a console table in two contrasting woods. A tall, graceful customcurved glass cabinet springs into shape close by. Round your tour out back upstairs in the finish room, where an array of items

ud and Mary Singleton, their 6 children, and a cocker spaniel named ‘Pal’ started the 1st generation of ‘Singleton's Store’ in Reading, Vermont back in 1946. Times were tough after the war, yet Bud and Mary extended kindness and credit to many of the folks in need. They grew their business with good ‘ole’ fashioned service selling excellent quality meat, groceries, beer and wine, clothing and shoes. As the years went by, the hard-working couple grew a steady customer base and a strong business to support the years to come. In 1976, Bud and Mary built the new Singleton's store in Proctorsville, Vermont with the help of their sons Tom and John, and Sheba their Doberman Pincher. The new store opened in 1977. A new location, and new times brought about new challenges. Yet the good ‘ole’ fashioned service, quality products and the genuine Singleton kindness kept their business thriving.

Mary and Bud always listened to their customers. Sheba remained employed as the store’s night watchdog. During the day, Sheba greeted customers with great exuberance. The evidence of this crafty pup’s pay—lay scattered throughout the store each morning—"What-cha-ma-call-it’ candy bar wrappers. At different times, the Singleton's kids contributed to helping the store become a unique business. As in all families, kids find their callings. Tom’s calling was to work at the store. In 1999, Bud and Mary retired, and Tom and his wife Linn took over the family business. Listening to customers, providing ‘ole fashioned service’, and quality products are still the foundation of Singleton's stores. About 13 years after taking over the family business in Proctorsville, Tom and Linn opened a 2nd store in Quechee, Vermont. Their niece, Danielle Singleton, manages that store.

he Inn at Weathersfield continues to receive praise from some of the most important culinary and travel publications, including Food & Wine, Fodor’s, Bon Appetit and Yankee Magazine. Its unique menus, award-winning wine cellar, signature cocktails, and now the handson cooking classes taught by cookbook authors and visiting chefs inside The Hidden Kitchen, draw discriminating vacationers, wedding parties, and business travelers year-round. Here, 10 guests share their stories from when they drove into the woods and discovered The Inn at Weathersfield.

90 Okemo Valley Regional Guide

1. "A quintessential country inn where the only light at night is the flames from the fire pit and stars above.” – Alison D., Westport, CT 2.

"You are welcomed as if you are family or a longtime friend." – Sheena M., Ayer, MA

3. "Their vegetable garden is so chill. It supplements what they get from the farms. They grow everything from heirloom seeds, squash the size of watermelons, tomatoes so juicy red and edible flowers. It’s worth the trip to be inspired.” – Kali H., Brooklyn, NY 4. "Food is outstanding and has a fresh take on local ingredients." – Gabe L., Hoboken, NJ 5. "New York City’s young people are completely besotted with great food and its preparation. They need to know about the Hidden Kitchen!" – Angela G., Ludlow, VT 6. "The best way to start the morning is by enjoying a hot cup of coffee on the inn's historic front porch watching the sun rise." – Janwww.YourPlaceInVermont.com/lodging T., San Diego, CA

7. “We dined in the private wine cellar the first night and then had a great dinner outside by the fire on the second.” – Erik R., Simsbury, CT

9. "Best cuisine you will find in New England, from the hearty breakfasts (try the Vermont farmhouse cheddar and heirloom apple pancakes with cider syrup and walnut maple butter) to the homemade donuts they send you off with after breakfast." – Gayle S., Summit, NJ 10. "It's hard to find a better tasting menu than one that highlights herbs and vegetables from their onsite heirloom garden." – Stephanie S., Providence, RI Toll free 866.216.8722 l Local 802.228.5830

relax...

Enjoy a moment of rest from the distractions of daily life.

The idea of a relaxing soak in hot water is by no means a new one. Throughout history people from many different cultures have enjoyed this practice. From naturally occurring thermal springs to elaborately constructed bath houses, the benefits of hydrotherapy are well established.

“Jacuzzi is the premium brand in the industry” says Mark Falango who, with his wife Christine own and operate the business. Knight Tubs Pools & Spas has been the area’s leader in hot tub sales and service since 1984. “We believe that the Jacuzzi brand and the Knight Tubs experience offers the best combination of superior product and service. Knight Tubs Pools & Spas is dedicated to providing both our local customers and second homeowners prompt, personalized service.” “Our goal is to provide an excellent buying experience” says Christine Falango. “It’s gratifying when we deliver a new tub and the customer is thrilled.” For some, buying a hot tub is a luxury and for others it’s a necessity. Regardless, having one can improve your life in many ways. A Jacuzzi hydrotherapy massage delivers the right combination of heat, buoyancy and massage for immediate relaxation. Positive benefits last long after you’ve left the hot tub. “Just a few minutes a day in a hot tub can help you lead a healthier lifestyle.” The Jacuzzi brand hot tubs you will find at Knight Tubs Pools & Spas are extremely energy efficient and designed for the harsh northern climate of Vermont. Experienced technicians at Knight Tubs Pools & Spas provide routine weekly, bi-weekly and monthly service for your hot tub or pool. Innovation has always been at the core of the Jacuzzi brand. If you are looking for a new hot tub, or dedicated care for one you own, stop by Knight Tubs Pools & Spas. Christine and Mark look forward to seeing you. 108
