CREATIVE CHANGE
- An investigation of how creative places can strengthen the
schools and communities in socio-economically challenged areas Location: Vivalla, Ă–rebro, Sweden
Year: 2018
Through my thesis project I have been investigating how creative places can benefit the schools and communities in socio-economically challenged areas and how they can best be designed to achieve these benefits. Creative places here refer to public spaces that encourages and allows for creativity and local engagement. The learnings have then been implemented into a design-proposal which is a vision for a new creative platform in Vivalla, Ă–rebro. The local conditions of the area have been investigated through qualitative methods of observations, interviews and a workshop with students from the local school. Rather than a finished project, the proposal should be seen as a vision that can be used as a basis for discussion with the local actors. SEGREGATION IN SWEDEN: VULNERABLE AREAS Vivalla is one of the so called particularly vulnerable areas which are defined by the Swedish police. Besides the criminal influence these areas also struggle with socio-economic problems such as low school-results, unemployment and low trust among residents. The low educational level in vulnerable areas is an urgent issue. To only have primary education is much more common

RESEARCH TOPIC: CREATIVITY WITHIN EDUCATION
COMM
I UN
In the “The Wow Factor”, a global UNESCO study summarized by professor Anne Bamford, many postivie impacts were found when using creative and artistic pedagogies in schools, such as enhanced attainment among students, improved attitudes to learning and personal satisfaction. But it was found that these benefits only occur within high-quality programs and that the education provided in schools is often insufficient. One of the most important aspects to achieve a high quality program was a strong partnership between schools and the outside arts and community organizations. This indicates a need for an education extending beyond the classroom and new forums for collaboration, which is what my intervention aims to be.
7
SITE AND URBAN CONTEXT The project aims to be a link between the local school and the public and connect students with local organizations, the community, creative professionals and external visitors. The project should also help making visible the local engagement and positive initiatives occuring in Vivalla. To establish a public building with a strong visual an physical connection to the outside could also increase the perceived safety. The site is chosen with this in mind, for its accessibility and high visibility. It is located between the centrum building and the school at the end of Poesigatan, which is the main connection to the city center and the local bus street. It would be a suitable location to create a node in the network of existing actors.

MATERIALITY The materials and colors are chosen to harmonize with the existing materials in the area, but still bring something new to the otherwise monotonous surrounding and be an eye-catcher. There are glazed parts of the facade in all directions to achieve a strong visual connection with the surrounding and also for the building to be able to spread light during the evening,

BILLBOARDS
1.
The facade is designed for the possibility of placing billboards or digital screens above the entrances. This is to be able to increase the visibility of available activities in Vivalla and advertise events. The upper floors of the building are angled to increase the visibility of the billboards towards the schoolyard and the main pedestrian path. 1. 1st entrance with billboard - view from school yard 2. 2nd entrance with billboard - view from pedestrian path.

NEW CHANGING ROOMS UMEÅ HOSPITAL
BUILDING 11 VISION FOR REFURBRISHMENT
Client: Umeå Folkets Hus
Client: The county council of Västerbotten
Client: Baltikgruppen
Client: Umehem
Description: Folkets Hus is a cultural center in central Umeå. They wanted a more visible entrance and to rebuild an existing extension of their restaurant which felt outdated. The wall above the entrance was glazed and the entrance and the extension was rebuilt with a bronze coloured facade. A balcony above the extension was also added to increase the outdoor seetings of the restaurant.
Description: A large amount of changing rooms used by the employees at Umeå hospital needed renovation. The client wanted a concept to use for the new changing rooms and design of a ”show-room” where this could be tested. An old storage was redesigned into changing rooms and built autumn 2017.
Description: Building 11 is an office building from the 50’s close to the hospital in Umeå. The building is in need of renovation and the client wanted help with a vision of how this could be done. We made a quick sketch where we suggested to keep many of the existing details that bring character to the 50’s building, such as the marble floor, but to open up the offices and enlarge the windows to enchance the view.
Description: A housing competition for a block in central Umeå which is currently parking space. Link made a competition entry for the client with a group of buildings with variety in scale and materiaity and a courtyard. I produced three renderings for the competition within a weeks time.
My role: Participation in making building permit and construction documents, facade design, participation in client meetings.
(All of the shown visualizations are produced by me)
My role: Own responsibility for sketching, design, coloration, choice of materials, visualization and client meetings. I made all the construction documents with support from engineer Lina Hansson.

Client: Upplands-Bro municipality
Description: A tenant association in central Uppsala wanted a renovation of the balconies and the exterior corridors. The previous white balconies where replaced by a pattern in warm colours relating to the brich facade and the insides of the balconies where covered with wood-like boards and got better lighting. The renovation was made during autumn 2016.
Description: The school in Östervåla (Heby municipality) needed more classrooms and a larger canteen. We made a deisgn for a larger extension containing 8 new classrooms and a smaller extension of the canteen with a fan room above.
Description: Tegelmästaren is a housing area from the 70’s. with four larger houses. The area was in big need for renovation and the client waned a vision to get ideas of what they could do with the area. We suggested lighter entrances, opening up the balconies on the ground floor, facade renovation, a new freestanding laundry building and a rearrangement of the parking lots. We also made volume studies for a new residential building in the block.
Description: One floor beneath the main entrance of the cultural house is a room used as an entrance to the blackbox theatre and workshops. It is experienced as messy, noisy and unwelcoming. Together with the client we made a proposal for alterations; a wall in front of the toilets, glazed walls around the workshop space to isolate the noise and a receptiondesk.
My role: Sketching, design, visualization, coloration, building permit documents.

BUILDING ON THE BAY
-A project questioning the idea of what building types belong in the city center and how to relate to the local history of a site
Location: Sundsvall, Sweden
Year: 2015
A new bridge has been built in Sundsvall. The E4 previously surrounding the whole harbour in central Sundsvall will now cross the bay instead, leaving huge possibilities to develop the area. The municipality plan to tear down all the existing industrial buildings in the areas and a new mainly residential area is going to be built. This studio project gave us the possibility to develop an alternative strategy. The project was a continuation of preparatory work made during the previous semester when we in groups mapped the area. What we found out during our research was that the harbour area today was not as dead as the municipality implied; several industries, offices and manufacturers where still active. With an approach to relate to and make use of the existing, my project aims to enhance and take inspiration from the industrial history instead of erasing it and to allow for a larger diversity of activities in the city center. I designed a new building connected to an existing manufacturer of building materials located in the harbour. The new building is an educational center with focus on building and construction which could collaborate with the existing manufacturer. It also has a restaurant to add more public functions to the harbour area.

TOMTEBO GREENHOUSE CAFÉ A project about common life in suburbia and minimal living-space.
Location: Umeå, Sweden
Year: 2014
The common life in suburbia is often at a minimum. But does it have to be like that? How could common life be implemented within this context? The assigned program was a common space of any kind (approx. 60 m2) and a seasonal housing for 6 people (also approx. 60 m2 total). The housing should be for berry-pickers during the summer and students during the rest of the year. With this minimal living-space I chose to challenge the ideas of individual rooms and have shared bedrooms instead of taking away the common areas. The project makes use of the closeness to the pre-school, which is one of few common places regularly visited in the area. Even though this is a place that many people visit every day, it is unusual to stay there any longer than necessary. The café could be a reason to stop for a little longer and meet other people from the neighbourhood. The café could be run partly by the students living in the residential part of the building. To link the common part of the project to the student and berrypickers housing could also be a way to mix different social groups in an otherwise homogenous area.
