Kat Downing Design goes beyond just your computer. It is a world that has unlimited choices and appearances. It is a language that anyone in the world can understand. For me, I enjoy having this power to physically change and affect our culture around us. Being surrounded by people who enjoy the realms of imagination and working in a team environment has changed the way I design. The chance to shape our future and the design elements is something that I will always strive to be apart of. I shall forever be grateful for being able to communicate beyond just words and working on this visual language that I absolutely love.

NORMAL GRUB BRANDING/PACKAGING
OVERVIEW Normal Grub is an imaginary company based off of mother’s intriguing recipes. These products would be ready-made meals in which all the consumer would need to do is buy the meat and put it all together in a pot to have a home-cooked meal. CHALLENGE To find a way to incorporate my mother’s design sense, old general store, and show the meal as a quirky and fun dinner that is different from others. SOLUTION The packaging and logo was based off of old flour sacks that the consumer would take to a general store. The packaging is simple with a reusable container that holds all of the ingredients. The logo is based off of my mother’s love for roosters and the quirky dinner recipes she makes. The sketchy illustrations were used to help drive home the concept of home-made attributes as well as the dinner.
Anomaly BRANDING/INTERACTIVE APP
OVERVIEW Anomaly is an interactive app that allows visitors to have a new experience when it comes to visiting a museum. With this app, they can learn directly from the artist, learn more about similar artists and styles, connect to other pieces in the museum, as well as find other museums near the location that have similar works. CHALLENGE To create an interactive adventure through an app that promotes people to go to museums as well as learn more through a visual educating experience. SOLUTION With the idea that the artist’s would actually be holograms, the overall feel for the app needed to be futuristic and deal with technology. Taking line work from a computer chip and using similar colors, the design was pulled off and motivates the viewer to get a full experience with the exhibit as well as the museum building that holds the art pieces.

S.A.F.E. campaign AD CAMPAIGN
OVERVIEW S.A.F.E Alternatives is a non-profit organization that’s focus is on helping self-injurers and their loved one find answers and help. Since most ads on this topic talk about self-injury and suicide, the focus was shifted onto the experience a self-injurer has and the words that are targeted towards them. CHALLENGE Finding a way to show how words push self-injurers away from their family and friends based on what people say to them. SOLUTION The solution for this ad campaign was to create a moving ad that could show how the victim is breaking or disappearing as the words keep growing. The red text symbolizes cutting and burning, which is two of the largest injuries. The information on the bottom provides families and victims on where they can get help.
Comic-Con Campaign AD CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW Comic-Con is a comic book convention in San Diego, CA. Cosplay (Costume Play) is extremely popular there. So combining the two and creating a masquerade contest to win tickets to go to Comic-Con seemed appropriate. CHALLENGE Finding the way to take the humor, passion, and love of comics and combining it with the dedication that cosplay takes to make to create a well-designed contest ad campaign and interface. SOLUTION Using the colors from the comic con logo and the layout of comic books, the layout for the ads where created. The images represent the types of people you see at Comic-Con and also show that anyone is welcome to cosplay and enjoy being their favorite character. The contest was designed to be simple. The cosplayer would just take a picture of their costume and hash tag it to be entered into the contest for free tickets. Then viewers can go on the app or the website to vote.

Arcane Supplies BRANDING/PACKAGING/WEB DESIGN OVERVIEW Arcane Supplies is a fictitious company that partners with Ebags.com. Ebags.com is a well-known online company that has high quality hiking and travel backpacks. Arcane Supplies would be a microsite that provides the consumer with a custom made kit filled with all their essentials for backpacking. CHALLENGE The challenge for this project was to emulate the excitement of travelling and find a way to organize and limit the consumer. With these kits, the traveler will not have to worry about forgetting anything as well as limiting themselves so that they don’t over pack. SOLUTION The solution for this project was taking a mixture of Victorian graphics and combining them will a sleek modern finish. The logo and illustrations represent Victorian sketches, compass base plate design, and the concept of arcane or secret adventures. Each box contains things such as laundry, collapsible umbrella, bedroll, toiletries, and more. The design provides an easy way to organize the traveller’s products as well as look sleek at the same time.
Crown Candy Kitchen AD CAMPAIGN
OVERVIEW Crown Candy Kitchen is a diner in East St. Louis. They are well known for being on man vs. food and being one of the oldest, authentic diners in the Midwest. CHALLENGE The challenge is to highlight their 1 lb. b.l.t. and change their advertisements to focus more on the food instead of the nostalgic feel. SOLUTION The solution starts out with a commercial that focuses on the creation of the famous 1 lb. bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich. Using the concept of homemade and quality, the hand drawn time emulates the comfort of home. The social media created for the one-week offer of a free b.l.t. when you check in will get people to come in and try the sandwich if they never have. The Discover Crown Square hash tag scavenger hunt (using Instagram) will help not only improve the reputation of East St. Louis, but also bring more people to try Crown Candy Kitchen and its home made dinners and treats.
YMC ENTERTAINMENT BRANDING/WEB DESIGN
OVERVIEW YMC Entertainment is a talent company in Seoul, South Korea. They have 6 singers including their CEO Tae Jin-ah. The company focuses on a variety of singers, but they do stay true to their culture and their roots. CHALLENGE The challenge for this project was to find a way to combine their culture along with the modern style that South Korea has in their fashion and design. Their competition has either gone the route of full calligraphy brush or completely geometric modern. SOLUTION The solution was to incorporate both their calligraphy history as well as the sharp angles of geometric shapes. The brushstrokes and colors come from Korean calligraphy and scrolls. The texture comes from Korea’s growing artistic street art and influence of their graphic design and lifestyles.

CHALLENGE To create a packaging/branding that is suitable for everyone and expands their target audience from strictly children to a range of ages from 8-35. SOLUTION Grapple is a hybrid apple that is unique and different from any produce on the market today. Combining two flavors into one creates the flavor of a Grapple. The logo showcases this with the differences of texture and color that represent the Gra (grape) and pple(apple). The packaging shows a playful geometric form. WONDERCON BRANDING/MERCHANDISE/EVENT DESIGN
OVERVIEW WonderCon is a comic book convention in Anaheim, CA. It is a sister con to Comic-Con, but it is not as well known. It is smaller in size, but tends to cover different shows and media then Comic-Con. Their branding is a purple tornado with a star inside the tornado. CHALLENGE Finding a way to incorporate the love of comics, sci-fi, fantasy, and video games into one concept. There is a need to rebrand the convention as well as fixing some of the badges, event design, and merchandise. SOLUTION The culture of comic books has progressively been getting bigger. With that in mind, WonderCon has incorporated more video games into their convention. Taking that into mind, the design was making a mix of retro 16-bit video game design and what is recognizable and popular in comics. The logo is a 16-bit representation of Anaheim. The other elements take popular comic book symbols or meanings with a 16-bit design to balance out and include all realms of nerd culture.

CARNIVALE THREADS BRANDING/FASHION DESIGN/WEB DESIGN OVERVIEW Carnivale Threads is an online clothing store that was created to fit a variety of sizes and styles. It ranges from Victorian to Modern fashion. The store also focuses on being affordable for a wide range of ages. CHALLENGE Find a way to connect the large audience that is covered by this clothing line. The design should be quirky since majority of the consumers enjoy unique lifestyles. SOLUTION The solution for this project was to take the past and present history and find a design that could work for the variety of styles. With the fashion as different for each genre, the best solution was to create a odd family, or a carnivale theme. The history of these genres of fashion are mainly focuse in the 1900’s so the 1940’s typographic elements and color scheme was chosen. The shapes and boxes used throughout the project are based off of vintage circus posters and wooden signs. The design represents both the consumers and the owners unique style and interest in the different and odd factors of life.
