introduction a series of illustrated cards to visually represent the damage smoking has on the human body descriptive notes appear on the backs and are reprinted on the following pages to provide the collector with knowledge on the subject area the intention is to provide incentive for people in the process of quitting smoking and the completed collection can act as lasting proof of the achievement it is hoped that the album may be an aid to those who wish to retain the cards in a permanent form

muscles

smoking reduces the amount of oxygen that reaches the skin, causing it to age faster and be prone to wrinkling

carbon monoxide replaces some of the oxygen in the blood, making it harder for it to transfer into muscle cells

skin complexion is at risk of developing a yellow-grey colouring

this causes muscles to tire easily, meaning exercise is harder

smoking increases the risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition causing loss of bone mass

smoking can increase the risk of having a brain aneurysm

this results in weaker bones and therefore being more prone to fracture

it increases the risk of having a stroke by at least fifty per cent, which can cause brain damage and even death

eyes smoking causes irreversible damage to the back of the eye, known as macular degeneration it is also linked to cataracts and optical nerve damage which can lead to blindness 05/16

teeth the tar in cigarettes can get stuck in cracks of tooth enamel causing staining and discolouration another unattractive problem caused in the mouth is bad breath 06/16

more than ninety-three per cent of oropharyngeal cancers (of the mouth) are caused by smoking

smoking increases the risk of esophageal cancer developing

gum disease is also a risk carried by smoking

the lower esophageal sphincter is also weakened, resulting in stomach acid entering the esophagus and causing heartburn

coughs, colds, wheezing and asthma are minor problems smoking can cause

smoke contains the chemical hydrogen cyanide which attacks the lining of the bronchi causing inflammation

there are risks of fatal diseases such as, pneumonia, emphysema and lung cancer 09 /16

heart the nicotine in cigarette smoke causes blood vessels to narrow, reducing the oxygen supply to the heart risks of heart attacks and coronary heart disease are high 11/16

stomach the nicotine in cigarettes weakens the stomach’s ability to fight helicobacter pylori this is a bacteria which causes most stomach and duodenal ulcers 12/16

bladder

smoking slows the blood flow to the kidneys and can play a role in the progression of chronic kidney disease

carcinogens in smoke are absorbed from the lungs, filtered in the kidneys, concentrated in the urine and damage the lining of the bladder

benzene in cigarettes is linked to kidney cancer 13/16

this can lead to risks of bladder cancer 14/16

smoking can result in a sharp decline in fertility and fewer reproductive years for women

smoking has been linked to a lower sperm count and a higher percentage of deformed sperm

it also increases the risk of developing cancer of the cervix

genetic damage is also a risk
