The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC) is a federally chartered non-profit civilian youth program. Included under the USNSCC umbrella are a junior program, the Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC), for youths ages 11 through 13 and a senior program, the Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) for youth ages 13 through 17. About Us · Founded by the Navy League of the United States in 1958 by request of the U.S. Navy to “create a favorable image of the Navy on the part of American youth” · Chartered by Congress in 1962, focusing on the development of young Americans · Over 150,000 Sea Cadets and League Cadets trained since our founding · Currently over 2,800 adult volunteers and 9,000 Cadets in 392 units located nationwide and in the territories of Guam and Puerto Rico Cadet Programs and Benefits · Each unit participates in one training event per month · Initial two-week recruit training event during first year of membership for Sea Cadets; one-week orientation class for League Cadets · Advanced training on Navy, Coast Guard and USNSCC ships and at shore facilities · Ability to participate in International Exchange Program with International Sea Cadet Association nations · Variety of winter and summer training opportunities including photojournalism, sailing, marksmanship and underwater research · Scholarship opportunities through USNSCC and the Navy League · Eligibility for military advanced pay grade programs (up to two grades) Benefits to the Navy · Enhances public awareness of Navy and its mission in areas where there is no other Navy presence · Reduces recruiting costs—former Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Roughead, indicated that each cadet enlistee saved USN over $14k · Reduces Navy lifecycle training costs through lower attrition rates · 10% of the Midshipmen in the most recent entering class at the U.S. Naval Academy were former cadets, a figure consistent over the past decade Our Funding · Cadets pay an annual fee, as well as uniforms, training and travel expenses, which can exceed $500/year. Summer training costs cadets $125/week or much more depending on federal funds received · Federal funding provides the majority of our income. Since FY2006, the Navy has programmed a constant $1.7M funding level, though training expenses have increased due to rising costs and growing cadet enrollment · Each year USNSCC pursues additional funding through Congress to address shortfall How You Can Help · Inform your local offices about the program and encourage a dialogue with units · Visit the cadets in your state or district · Support our $1.148M FY15 additional funding request · Support our FY15 NDAA initiative to provide stable funding in the future
