About The Laramie Project In October 1998 Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. Five weeks later, MoisĂŠs Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project went to Laramie, and over the course of the next year, conducted more than 200 interviews with people of the town. From these interviews they wrote the play The Laramie Project, a chronicle of the life of the town of Laramie in the year after the murder. The Laramie Project is one of the most performed plays in America today. Tectonic Theater Project collaborated with HBO to make the film based on the play. It starred Peter Fonda, Laura Linney, Christina Ricci and Steve Buscemi among others. It opened the 2002 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for 4 Emmys. www.tectonictheaterproject.org

There will be three acts with a brief intermission between each act. Please silence your cell phones and refrain from flash photography, which can be distracting to our performers.

Senior Reflection “It’s hard to talk about Laramie now, to tell you what Laramie is, for us.” Two and a half months ago, while we were all still in summer vacation mode, Dr. Fry announced what the fall play was going to be. The majority of us assumed that it was going to be just another show. But, we soon found out it was going to have a much greater impact on us, more than we could ever imagine. The Laramie Project has been much more than a show to us. It has opened our eyes not only to the unbelievable passion with which people can hate, but also, more importantly, to the strength and power of love and unconditional compassion. As seniors, we feel honored to be able to be part of such a transformative work at MTS. At such a pivotal time in our lives, it has given us a greater understanding of the world we live in. We would like to thank everyone that is part of the creative team, especially Dr. Fry and Mrs. Velardi. We couldn’t have done it without you! Also, we would like to thank and congratulate the freshmen, sophomores and juniors involved in Laramie. You have helped us all along our MTS journey in a myriad of ways. We want you all to remember, whether it is at MTS or anywhere else, if you are going to tell a story, tell it right. -Seniors of MTS

JUDY SHEPARD

ANTI-HATE CRIMES ACTIVIST AND MOTHER OF MATTHEW SHEPARD

Judy Shepard is determined to use her grief over her son’s death to make a difference—to do what she can to ensure that no other parent will have to endure what she has. “I feel Matthew with me every day, or I would not be able to do this,” she says. “We realize that we must use the voice his death has given us. I realize that what I can try and accomplish is to make people aware. We get so complacent in our lives that we forget not everyone is safe, and frequently, it is our children who aaren’t safe.”

We Are Like This Cast member John Kuyat ‘15 shared this reflection at Malvern Prep’s UNITAS blog. Read more at www.malvernprep.org/unitas. There is an inevitably grim reality that The Laramie Project, a play about the aftermath of a real-life hate crime, quite entails. We make mistakes, but we cast stones. We justify our actions, but we judge others. We are different, yet we force conformity. Zubaida Ula (Ally Carbonar NDA‘17), a Muslim character in the play, says it best: “We are like this.” I firmly believe that human beings are inherently good; we are all created in the image and likeness of God, the ultimate good. However, that does not mean we are perfect, and it does not mean that we are liberated from corruption. We still discriminate. The Laramie Project is a portrayal It is often by of this. The show is controversial; it is poetic; but, most discovering importantly, it is real. The Laramie Project, while dealing with the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, reminds us that hate crimes are, unfortunately, all too frequent. Last month, a gay couple was brutally beaten in Philadelphia. Two men and one woman are currently facing charges of aggravated assault. It is often by discovering another’s difference, that we define ourselves as “good”, “moral”, or “normal”. And this kind of prejudice is but one or two steps from hatred and violence. Hatred is a self-destructive emotion. It is a mask that we hide behind to suppress our own insecurities, fears, and doubts about who we really are.

another’s difference, that we define ourselves as “good”, “moral”, or “normal”. And this kind of prejudice is but one or two steps from hatred and violence.

The Laramie Project is an introspection of the human condition. It is the mirror we must hold up to reality, so that we may begin to change our ways. The show features various monologues that capture completely different perspectives about Matthew’s death, and how the town can move forward after this tragedy. For instance, Reverend Fred Phelps (Charlie Malone ‘15) declares that, “If God doesn’t hate [gays], then why does he put ‘em in hell?” Romaine Patterson (Kelly Mulhern VMA‘17), however, challenges him, asserting that this type of hatred must be combated in a better way. Friends and supporters of the Shepard family decide to dress as angels and circle Matthew’s funeral so that protestors cannot be seen because of the angels’ enormous wings. This image is so powerful; it illustrates Christ’s own words, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” From a Christian standpoint, the only way to deal with hatred is perhaps the most difficult way: to confront it fearlessly, to love people for who they are, and to forgive even those who have destroyed us. Jesus stood against the hatred he saw in his world, but he also preached tolerance and understanding. As wrong as it is for us to judge others, it is as equally wrong for us to hate those who judge us. In the end, there is an inevitably joyous reality that The Laramie Project entails. We are pressured to conform, but we stand our ground. We are wronged, but we show mercy. We are hated, but we love. “We are like this.”

The members of Tectonic Theatre Project created the story of Laramie by collecting interviews and trying to tell the story of Matthew Shepard and his community as accurately and inclusively as possible.

In one of the show’s most notable monolgues, Fr. Roger Schmit, a Roman Catholic priest, tells his interviewers that “permission doesn’t make it correct.”

“Just deal with what is true,” says Schmit. “You know what is true. You need to do your best to say it correct.” The reporters and editors at The Blackfriar Chronicle respect the importance and the challenge of Schmit’s words. Every month, the staff works to report as accurately as possible, collecting interviews and information to tell the story of the school community.

Just as in The Laramie Project, our school community has a lot of voices and many diverse perspectives. We commend these Blackfriar Chronicle contributors for working hard to “say it correct” both on and off the stage. n
