Lord Howe was once a a mighty volcano, over 35 km across, for such a small looking island, geologically, it is known as the Lord Howe Rise, a sunken plateau that stretches over 2,000 km towards New Caledonia and is approxiamately 1,500,000 Km2, albeit under water. Species of the Banyan tree are related to the well known Moreton Bay Fig, endemic to Queensland Australia. 50 % of the flora and fauna species have evolved uniquely on this Island

ord howe island The first reported sighting of Lord Howe Island took place on 17 February 1788, when Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball, commander of the Armed Tender HMS Supply was en route from Botany Bay to found a penal settlement on Norfolk Island. On the return journey, Ball sent a party ashore on Lord Howe Island to claim it as a British possession. It subsequently became a provisioning port for the whaling industry, and was permanently settled in June 1834.

Where it is Lord Howe Island is situated about 650 km off the Coast of NSW, East of Port Macquarie. It is about 10 km long and between 2.0 km and 0.3 km wide, with an area of 14.5 Km 2. The township is situated mainly in the north west, on the Lagoon side of the Isalnd.

How to get there

Qantas Link flies out of Sydney, Port Macquarie, and Brisbane, in Peak times. During the week, most flights depart Sydney. Best value is to do a package deal through Oxley Travel, so flights and accomodation are packaged. Doing direct flights and accommodation, can end up costing an extra $500.

Where to stay There is a variety of accommodation available on the Island, ranging in different styles, and prices. Best locations are close to the Lagoon, or over the Eastern Side near Neds beach.

The Lagoon is a perfect place to snorkel. There is a glass bottom boat tour, that offersviews of the coral and fish. There are also up to 4 popular spots to snorkel, Erskine’sReef, Erscott’s Hole, Comet Hole andmost definately Ned’s Beach. One of the best places and most popular places to snorkel, is Ned’s Beach. It is a reasonablly close walk, from most accommodation. There is a great variety of tame fish, which are regularly fed by the tourists. There is also wetsuits, flippers, snorkels and masks, available on an honesty system, as well as paddle boards. There are also changing facilities, toilets and Barbecues are available, in a lovely grassed area above the beach. Places of Interest Museum The museum is a total delight. It offers historical films, the museum itself, merchandise, tourist information, coffee, meals, and homemade desserts. There is a marvellous fossil of a huge, horned turtle/dinosaur, as well as examples of extinct, as well as current Flora and Fauna.

Bakery The Anchorage Bakery and Restaurant, is just situated across from the lagoon. It offers breakfasts, lunches and dinners. It also has an amazing selection of goods baked that day, and you cannot go past the triple choc muffins, the choc mousse, or the most amazing turkish bread that you will ever taste.

Hiking There are some fantastic hikes on Lord Howe, Graded from 1/easy to Mt.Gower, 5/Extreme, which is a guided 8 hour hike. It is easy to keep fit, walking the well sign posted walks, and you are sure to come across the most amazing views. The banyan trees are totally mind blowing.

Local Legends Clive, the 83 yr old bird tour Guidewas totally amazing. He could call down the Providence Petrels, otherwise known as “Mutton Birds. These birds nest at thefoot of Mt. Gower, and Mt. Lidgbird, in the Kentia Palm Forest. Born a 3rd generation islander, descended from a whaler, who started off with twowives, Clive had a bucket load of yarns to share. He was also the local pastor for the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

These two magnificent Norfolk Pines stand as a living memorial, for a young family lost at sea. As the story goes, a boatload of locals were returning from the Main Land. It included two young children as well as their parents. Sadly, a horrendous storm blew up, at sea, and all aboard perished. No weckage was ever recovered. And a sad parent and grandparent planted these as beacons for the locals, as a reminder to always beware.

Kate and do Lord Serena howe Who are Kate & Serena ??? These two adventurous ladies met over 24 years ago, Serena pregnant with her last child, and Kate pregnant with her first. 13th August, 1993, sees Kate’s son Joe, born in the morning, and Dale, Serena’s son born in the afternoon. Their friendship has weathered the tests of time. Now both single, adventurous spirits have been born, and travels across Australia, and the world, have seen some exciting and hilarious times, as the girls upstump, and head off on regular and often spontaneous journeys. On the spur of the moment, the girls headed off to Lord Howe Island. This is one of Australia’s most pristine places. It is a World Heritage site, and it sure does deserve that title. The waters are crystal clear, the Coral is in pristine condition, and the fish sure are friendly, often mistaking your toe nails for fish food, as Serena found out.

One of the things we really enjoyed, was being able to hire a magnificent Naish 11ft 6 in board, that was super wide at 37 inches.

Paddle Board hire was available from two places, side by side at the Lagoon, for $20 per hour. There was a great range there, for all types of boarders.

For beginners, it enabled us to get our balance, quickly and to be be able to stand up in deep water, without fear of injury, and of course, do Yoga.

Snorkel and flipper hire, as well as wetsuits, was very reasonable, as you could hire for a week, from Environmental Tours, run by old Jill and Ken.( both late 70’s). They also ran up to four glass bottom boats tours, with snorkelling, every day, weather permitting.

The weather was fairly kind to us, with calm glassy waters quite often.

Lord Howe was ideal for Paddle Board Beginners of any age. Kate had not Paddle Boarded before, and Serena was a great Teacher. The secret is to get a wide as possible board, get into deeper water, place the paddle on the board in front of you, and put your hands on the board, and bring your knees up under yourself.

26

Being a bit dodgy on balance, take your time. you can only get wet.

Entertaining the Locals, once again, Kate took the water, and paddled out, and raised herself upright.

e t a k

Feeling pretty cocky, particularly after Serena’s Lazy Woman’s Yoga, on her board, Kate went into a gentle Tai Chi routine. All very relaxing and r evitalizing, the girls headed off after their fun, and indulged themselves, with Triple Choc Muffins, fresh from the bakery.Yum Yum. 27
