Integrated Technology
Embracing technology in a changing world
Integrated Technology The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Program at Stamford American International School is both a form of knowledge and a language that enables students to engage in cross-curricular learning. It includes much more than knowledge and skills related to computers and their applications. The focus is on holistic student learning and problem solving, rather than simply implementing technology into the curricula. Stamford’s ICT Program challenges all students to apply practical and creative thinking skills to solve problems using technology while also raising student awareness of their responsibilities as world citizens.
• Use and apply ICT effectively as a means to access, process and communicate information, and to solve problems.
The aims of the teaching and study of technology are to encourage and enable students to:
Stamford believes that the implementation of ICT prepares our students for university and the workplace, where technology is an integral part of academia and business. In keeping, Stamford integrates ICT (which is defined as using computers, cameras, video cameras, projectors, printers, etc.) as a tool within the broad curriculum. There are interactive Promethean boards in every classroom, a 1-to-1 iPad Program for students from Kindergarten 2 through Grade 5 and a 1-to-1 MacBook Pro Program for our Secondary School students. iMac Computer Labs are found across campus and are used by classes for special projects, testing or additional technology access.
• Develop an appreciation of the significance of technology for life, society and the environment. • Use knowledge, skills and techniques to create products and solutions of appropriate quality. • Develop problem solving, critical and creative thinking skills through the application of the design cycle. • Develop respect for others’ viewpoints and appreciate alternative solutions to problems.
Stamford’s holistic approach to ICT teaching and learning acknowledges that inquiry and problem solving contribute to students’ development of thinking skills and strategies that will equip them to face the rapidly changing demands of the 21st century. Technology provides the means and the context to help students become skillful problem solvers who can appreciate the role of technology in everyday life and society and who can respond critically and resourcefully to real life challenges.
Integrated Technology Elementary School ICT Technology is seamlessly merged into the classroom in the Elementary School. Specialist ICT teachers meet regularly with classroom teachers to discuss learning goals and options for appropriately incorporating technology to help address those goals. ICT teachers also join each classroom twice per week to further assist students and teachers with the integration of technology into student lessons. Students may use technology to research various themes, create presentations or to use educational applications to support their learning.
1-to-1 iPad Program Kindergarten 2 to Grade 5 The 1-to-1 iPad Program allows for students in Kindergarten 2 through Grade 5 to challenge themselves in applying practical and creative-thinking skills to solve problems and communicate ideas to a wider audience. Students work on progressively harder skills as they advance through the program. Students are given a broader range of applications and the opportunity to choose which application will enhance their multimedia presentations. Stamford teachers are linked into an extensive Apple network of sharing and collaborating to bring the best ICT practices into the classroom.
“One of my favorite apps is Good Reader. I can use it to pull up worksheets and write my answers in and email them to my teacher. I don’t use any paper, so we are saving the forests! I have also learned to use Pages and Keynote in ICT (Information and Communication Technology). My ICT teacher taught us how to use different fonts, headings, tables and graphs. We use the Mathletics and SpellBoard apps every day. SpellBoard allows me to record the spelling word and the definition in my own voice and in Mathletics, different homework is assigned to different students so I can learn at my own level. Charli Martin, Grade 4, on using her iPad in class
Integrated Technology Secondary School ICT Students continue their studies in the Secondary School with a separate class devoted entirely to technology studies. Students complete various projects to develop an understanding of the effects of technology on the world. In addition, students have the opportunity to enroll in technology-based electives. The Secondary School Electives Program includes classes in robotics and textiles, challenging students to complete various projects using technology and human ingenuity.
1-to-1 MacBook Pro Program Grade 6 to Grade 12 The 1-to-1 MacBook Pro Program enables teachers and students to effectively integrate International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards with the MYP Curriculum. Teachers partner with students and challenge them to use technology creatively, productively and appropriately. Students are growing up in a digital world and it is important to equip them with safe and reliable hardware and the latest software and cloud services to enhance their learning on and off campus. Stamford prepares students for the rapidly changing demands of the 21st century.
“Our MacBooks help us brainstorm imaginative ideas – we have a lot of fun with them! In our current ICT project, the goal was to pick a form of technology and see how it affects the digital and outside environments. We have been using Keynote, iMovie, Webspiration and other fun programs to assist our research and build our presentations. It has been really interesting to see the different aspects of technology and how they affect people and organizations. We also use our MacBooks in our foreign language classes. In Spanish, we researched a Spanish-speaking country and made a presentation about it for our foreign language assembly. We used a program called Prezi to present our research. Prezi lets you present ideas with many different effects, such as zooming in on slides. It has been really fun to use, and I hope we get to use it more!” Chloe Sommerin, Grade 9, on using her MacBook Pro in class
