ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013
FOR 40 YEARS, Community School has been dedicated to giving young people the best education possible.
We are a unique and wonderful school, thanks to a shared vision and the efforts of hundreds of individuals over our history. The genius of a Community School education is our joining of two essential elements: an exceptionally strong academic foundation and the nurturing of character strengths that carry our students for a lifetime. Our talented and passionate teachers, in and out of the classroom, make this possible. The past academic year was noteworthy in many ways. Our enrollment reached an all-time high of 371 students. Our boarding program grew to 24 students, with students coming from across the nation and from other countries. The Sun Valley Ski Academy, in its second year, attracted talented snow sports athletes to an outstanding school with terrific coaching and competition. As always, our classrooms were electric with creative teaching and energetic learning. I am excited that we introduced Mandarin language classes in the Elementary School and Upper School this year. This new course offering was made possible through the generosity of our Annual Fund donors, who gave above and beyond our expectations. In fact, as this Annual Report reveals, we far surpassed our previous record for the Annual Fund. As we look toward our next 40 years and beyond, we are inspired by the efforts of our founders and dedicated supporters, those who have both written—and who are writing—our history.
Best,
David Holmes Head of School

performances. For our two through four-year-old students, the entire world becomes an opportunity for learning. Our teachers use the principles of Reggio Emilia to develop curricula and projects around the students’ natural interests and desire to explore their surroundings.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Our students learn to explore the world around them with a sense of wonder and discovery. Kindergarteners learn the power of the written word, as well as the importance of mindfulness, asking before they

Is it necessary?” By fourth grade, students are tackling math equations while learning to build reed canoes the same way the Shoshone-Bannock tribe did hundreds of years ago. At the end of fifth grade, students are equipped with the skills they need to succeed in Middle School.

They grow in selfconfidence, and learn to take responsibility for their actions. Students advance academically and learn strong study skills, setting them up for successful high school years.
UPPER SCHOOL
We expect our students to meet, even exceed, our high academic expectations.
From composing theses in ninth grade to executing month-long Senior Projects in their final year, our students continually strive to challenge themselves and to defy comfort zones, both academically and socially. Students and faculty grow even closer, and students are empowered and encouraged to take risks, push themselves, and assume leadership roles as they prepare for college and begin the transition to adulthood.
RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM
Campus feels like a second home for many of our students; for 25 of our Upper School students, this is literally true. Our boarding students live in an inviting Residence Hall just steps from the Warm Springs Ski Lodge. The area is perfect for our students,

especially those who are competitive snow sports athletes. Students stay in comfortable rooms and participate in dorm activities that often have roots in the cultural heritages of our international students.
SUN VALLEY SKI ACADEMY
Snow sports athletes train with some of the best coaches in the world while benefitting from a rigorous academic program. Students receive instruction from Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation coaches, the 2013 USSA Club of the Year. Students also work closely with teachers to plan their academic courseloads. Community School’s academic flex program is designed to help students excel both academically and in snow sports by allowing students the flexibility to keep up with their classes while on the road.
No compromises— that is what Sun Valley Ski Academy promises.
OUTDOOR PROGRAM
Our students use mountains, rivers, and forests as their classrooms.
Kindergarteners start with micro-field trips exploring Trail Creek, which runs right behind campus. By senior year, students who exhibit perseverance and grit have learned how to avoid avalanches, navigate glaciers, and even build boats that will float across the Snake River. Upper School students wishing to intensify their experiences in this program can join the Outdoor Leadership Academy. Now in its third year, the Academy gives students both leadership and technical outdoor skills, enabling them to feel equally comfortable in the outdoors and in the boardroom.
ATHLETICS
Winning or losing, Cutthroats play with passion, determination, and profound sportsmanship.
Our students set high goals for themselves both in the classroom and on the field. Students participate in team sports as part of the school’s physical education requirement, pushing themselves to their full potential in soccer, tennis, cross-country, track and field, volleyball, golf, and basketball. Some students choose to compete in individual sports as well, including swimming, figure skating, horseback riding, and snow sports such as Alpine, cross country, and freestyle skiing, and snowboarding.
ARTS
All of our students spend time on the stage. Students as young as two help write, direct, produce, and perform in the ECC’s annual spring and holiday plays. In the Middle and Upper Schools, students tackle ambitious productions such as

The Little Mermaid Jr. and Bye Bye Birdie. Students participate in a range of music and fine arts classes, including show choir, music technology, ceramics, and photography.
COMMUNITY SERVICE Last year our students donated time and dollars to nonprofit organizations through the Wood River Foundation’s “Project WOW.” Students poured more than 5,800 hours into helping organizations such as the Hunger Coalition, the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, Idaho’s Bounty, the Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence, The Nature

This year’s graduating class had 31 total students, two international students, and four members of the Outdoor Leadership Academy, all of whom were accepted into well-respected institutions. Our college counselor ensures that students apply to schools that are a good fit for each individual’s interests and capabilities.

TEACHER TRAINING ACADEMY The Teacher Training Academy started in 2012 as a way to bring energy, enthusiasm and new ideas into the classroom, while giving young teachers a chance to gain experience in the classroom by working with seasoned full-time teachers. Two of last year’s six interns were hired for full-time positions at Community School, while one intern chose to remain on for an additional semester.

and acting as liaisons from the greater parent body to teachers and administrators. The annual school auction and events like the Golf Scramble bring the community together while supporting the school’s operating budget. Every parent is welcome to attend Parents’ Association meetings and contribute their time, talent, and energy in a way that is meaningful to them.

LOOKING FORWARD IN THIS, OUR 40TH YEAR, THE PAST IS PROLOGUE. We are blessed with a foundation of distinctive educational principles, defining traditions, a beautiful campus, and dedicated people. We are also a forward-looking school and community. Indeed, we aim to be among the very best and strongest independent schools in the nation. Excellence in all aspects of what we do is the standard we pursue, dayby-day and year-by-year. Toward this end, important developments on the horizon include the following: · We are excited about the envisioned growth of our exemplary boarding program, from 23 to 45 or more students over the next few years. · We have an ambitious plan for transforming Trail Creek campus by constructing a new building, which would provide beautifully for our expected enrollment in the years ahead. · We are one of 14 schools involved in a prestigious project to study how schools foster character strengths. This project, based at the University of Pennsylvania, will reinforce and communicate nationally what is already special about a Community School education.
On these and other fronts, we invite your participation and support. We are a communal enterprise, and every person—every fish in the school—counts.
We are deeply grateful for your support and generosity. Together, we are taking our wonderful school into a promising future!
