What is the Interfraternity Council?
With over 2,900 members, fraternity men amount to 23% of the male undergraduate population at the Capstone. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) serves as the governing body of the 27 NIC fraternities at The University of Alabama. The purpose of the IFC is to serve its members by sponsoring several enriching programs throughout the year. IFC constantly works with the Alabama Panhellenic Association, the United Greek council, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council at UA to further strengthen and support the UA Greek community’s values and vision.

Preview weeknd provides prospective students an opportunity to see first hand what fraternity life at UA is all about. Not only does it afford the opportunity for incoming students to get to know others, it also gives them the chance to become familiar with campus. People you meet during the weekend can answer questions you might have about the Greek Community, fraternity membership or the University that you have not had the chance to ask. Please note that participation in this event is not mandatory for those who wish to go through recruitment, and your participation will not affect you ability to join a fraternity in the fall.
THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA Interfraternity Council Building Tomorrow’s Leaders Today
Fraternities have been a valued part of student life at The University of Alabama since 1847. The fraternities and sororities at the Capstone provide a meaningful outlet for our students to accomplish the University’s mission. Fraternities strive to achieve the greatest potential from each of their members by utilizing their individual talents and skills. Those students belonging to a fraternity at the Capstone tend to have a well rounded college experience through scholarship, leadership, community service, social life, and lasting friendships. In choosing The University of Alabama and its fraternity community, new members are choosing not only an outstanding institution of higher learning, but one of the strongest Greek communities in the nation.

Why a UA Fraternity?
We would like to invite you to attend the Interfraternity Council Preview Weekend to learn about the opportunities available to you at UA through Greek life. While visiting this weekend you will hear from many members of the Greek Community as well as administrators about the advantages of joining a fraternity at the Capstone. We will guide you through an overview of the recruitment process at UA. You will also get the chance to tour some of the fraternity houses and meet the men who may one day be your brothers. If you are coming to the University from out-of-state, or simply not familiar with Greek life, this one-day event will give you a great look at the Greek community and UA’s campus.

UGC and NPHC Fraternities
Interested in joining a culturally-based United Greek Council (UGC) fraternity or a traditionally African-American National Pan-Hellenic (NPHC) fraternity? These groups do not participate in Preview Weekend or IFC Fall recruitment, rather they recruit members throughout the year via a process called Membership Intake. For more information about a specific NPHC or UGC fraternity or for information about the Membership Intake Process (MIP), please visit greekaffairs.ua.edu or call the Office of Greek Affairs at 205.348.2693.
Fall Recruitment -
How do I join a Fraternity?
Men who wish to join a fraternity at The University of Alabama have two ways of seeking membership. Traditionally, groups recruit members during the spring and summer prior to their freshmen year and extend bids for membership prior to classes beginning in the fall semester. The Interfraternity Council holds a semi-formal recruitment during late August and early September. During semi-formal recruitment each prospective new member has the opportunity to interact with individuals from fraternities and visit their houses. Semiformal recruitment gives students who have not yet received a bid the opportunity to pursue one. Should you be interested in registering for recruitment or being contacted by our fraternities please follow the following steps to ensure that your application is submitted correctly. Once you have completed the registration process online by visiting greekaffairs.ua.edu you will receive an email confirmation and the Interfraternity Council (IFC) will mail you a confirmation with important dates. By registering in the Fraternity Recruitment program, your information will be shared with each of the 28 fraternities at the University. However, this does not guarantee that they will all contact you as to their specific recruitment events throughout the spring and summer. We recommend that you also contact the recruitment chairmen of individual chapters you are interested in. Fraternities at The University of Alabama have a tradition of summer biding. Should you receive a summer bid from a chapter it does not become official until Fall 2013 when the University eight week pledge program begins. In order to become involved in fraternity life at Alabama, it is required that incoming freshman complete this online registration process. Unlike Greek life at other Universities around the country, the tendency of fraternities at Alabama to rely on summer bidding often leaves small margins for pledging at the beginning of the Fall Semester. By making efforts such as completing this online registration for IFC Fall Recruitment, attending IFC Preview Weekend or contacting the recruitment chairs for individual fraternities, you will not only become more familiar with the UA Greek community and its members, but also share your information with numerous fraternities around campus before formal rush commences. Please note that there will be two separate online registration forms, one for IFC Preview Weekend and another to register for IFC Men’s Fall Fraternity Recruitment.
