morikami wellness center

]

The Morikami Wellness Center is focused directly on the harmonious healing of the mind, body and soul and how different dimensions of wellness affect every individual differently. This center focuses first on group healing then transitioning to the specific individual to find balance and harmony in their everyday lives.

The Japanese concept of Kanso is the focus on simplify or beauty and visual elegance that are achieved by elimination and omission. Each zone interacts differently with each other just as the dimensions of wellness interact differently with each individual. These layering of dimensions creates the opportunity for these moments of transition from one zone to the other.

Ground floor plan The first floor focus on healing of all three dimension: mind, body and soul. The different dimension require their own forms of treatment but there are types of healing that can target multiple dimensions. When these dimensions overlap it creates an opportunity for transition spaces. Within these spaces plants are incorporated to help strengthen the connection to the natural environment. The lobby is an open multi-height space to take advantage of the views of the site. It is a transition space from the main entry to the different areas of healing. A common concept throughout this facility is the incorporation of greenery within transition spaces. The reception desk as a component of the lobby is made with a living wall and reclaimed wood to help keep the materials honest as in the Japanese culture.

Thesis

Re-pruposing 5th Street Elementary School In progress

]

intent

The intent of this project is to take an abandoned elementary school in downtown Washington, Missouri and re-purpose it for a new senior living environment. In order for this recently closed school building to optimally be returned to occupancy, the building’s conditions and the needs of the intended user will be assessed. By examining the advantages of the site and its close proximity to the local downtown, the spatial experience will also reference the latest design trends for senior living and provide a location for the residents to connect to their local community.

Goals

1 3

Provide a new purpose for this newly abandoned building

Add to the overall life of the building

2

4

Provide a new living environment for baby boomers

Community Involvement

Site 5th Street Elementary School is located at 100 W 5th Street. Located near this area are numerous amenities that are within walking distance. 5th Street is the main street that runs from the east to the west side of town. Their are two main vehicular entrances onto the site. The main entrance is from 5th Street and there is also a rear entrance from 6th Street Located next to the building is Immanuel Lutheran Church & School and across from the building is the Washington Public Library.

Client & User Based on the town’s history and the average age of the town’s citizens, the targeted user for this specific redesign is the Baby Boomer generation. Everyday over 10,000 baby boomers turn the age 65. With these numbers there is a higher demand for senior housing. Today boomers are looking for more of a social community atmosphere rather than a place of solitude.

Environmental Needs Housing:

As people get older the needs of their environment change. For baby boomers this may mean that they need to look for new living arrangements. This could mean moving from their multistory homes into smaller houses or even apartments. An increasing trend for seniors are independent senior living communities.

Mental & Emotional Needs:

As medical advances continue to develop people are living longer which also means that they are at higher risk for mental health issues. As mental and physical needs are more present in older adults sometimes the emotional needs can be missed.

Social Needs: Baby boomers are used to living a more involved lifestyle with their community. Therefore housing with opportunities to stay involved within their community is highly important.
