EVENING WEAR ESSENTIALS TIE
Ties are a creative way for gentlemen to express their personal style, and are essential for every man to have. Incorporating different colored, textured and patterned ties into your wardrobe will help to spruce it up a bit.
BOW TIE
Bow ties are becoming a staple, especially for young men. Bow ties can be worn for any occasion in place of a tie. Bow ties have become more fashionable over the years, incorporating color, patterns and handmade textiles.
CUMMERBUND
Cummerbunds are a classic essential for every stylish man wearing a single-breasted jacket or tuxedo. They were first designed to cover men’s waistbands, and are recently being adopted by young men because they help to lengthen legs and flatter figures. They are made to keep up with fashion trends, holidays and weather, but remember to always coordinate your accessories.
POCKET SQUARE
Pocket squares are fun accessories for fashionable men to add a pop of color to formal wear. Distinct folds help to freshen up any style by adding a touch of individuality, and of course, class.

CUFF LINKS
Cuff links can be considered jewelry for men, and many men often have personalized collections, including cuff links with motifs, logos, and monograms. Classic cuff link designs have not changed much over the years, and are a necessity when wearing a shirt with French cuffs.

Loafers are the most classic style for every gentleman, and they are a staple for any formal wear. One important rule: Always match the leather of your shoes to the leather of your belt.

CENTENNIAL TRADING CO.
SOUTHERN RETAIL
With authentic clothing made in the United States, Johnny Smrdel and Erik Stephens opened Centennial Trading Co. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Their clothing choices are ‘tried-and-true,’ time-tested material their customers (and themselves) can be proud of. They do not want to add to the “throw-away” culture, they make quality clothes with the intentions of the pieces lasting for years, a sort of investment. They have a few pieces that are their own personal brand, but mostly choose other apparel companies to feature such as Crate, Biltwell, and Raleigh Denim. The store itself was a result of the two men becoming frustrated after not finding the quality clothing they wanted. There is an old school feel about it and they are really looking to build a relationship with their customers, even if you are just stopping in to say hello.
We know that men’s specialty stores below the Mason-Dixon line are hard to come by, but these are our favorites. Here our some of our favorite southern retail stores that are the perfect remedy to the ill-fitting fashion phenomenon. With emphasis on durability and quality, these stores carry quality products that will keep you satisfied for years to come.
RALEIGH DENIM CO. REAL JEANS, MADE BY REAL PEOPLE. Totally original, and with an essence of tradition, Raleigh Denim was started by a husband and wife, Victor and Sarah Lytvinenko, in their apartment. They sold a bike and a video camera to buy their first machines, and it grew from there. They forged a relationship with Cone Mills, a local denim manufacturer. This allowed them to further plant their roots as a southern retailer and put their foot in the door at small boutiques, eventually landing a deal with Barney’s. Their denim is handcrafted with the finest materials, each pair being designed, sewn, washed, and finished under one roof. Their jeans are made in small batches, a stamped number on the leather patch lets you know what pair you received, and the inside signature by the cofounders is to further authenticate it. They really try to focus on details, and do not want the brand to get too big, so they put the cap on when they’ve hit the capacity. What’s better than supporting local businesses? Especially when you get to look good while doing it.
Haberdashery for the Southern Gentleman Southern Proper was launched by Emmie Howard and Reagan Howell in March 2006. Howard’s simple style mixed with Howell’s contrasting, unconventional style represent what the brand stands for: tradition with a little bit of edge. They design clothing, neckties, bow ties and accessories for men who desire style and have an appreciation for heritage. The Fall 2012 line comprises fun and preppy clothing and accessories. Their goals for the next year include dressing a Southern man Shotgun Proper Pocket, $35

Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STORE IN ONE SENTENCE? A: Where are we going, where did we come from?
LOST
Q: WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR ARC? A: Right now were anticipating newer designs, it’s always been our intention to do that, to move away from vintage. We see ourselves expanding more and more with different product lines. More growth based on what the public is interested in.
A R C
Q: WHERE DO YOU SOURCE THE UNIQUE SPECIALTY PRODUCTS IN YOUR STORE? A: I’ve lived in a couple of places and I’ve travelled overseas, so I’ve been exposed to a different way of shopping, so I guess that kind of idea has been infused into this space. Basically I’ve acquired a Rolodex of things that I liked and that never left my memory. I came across Baxter’s of California while I was living in L.A., in New York you get to see a lot of great books and magazines and different types of clothing lines. They are predominantly made in America, small batch kind of niche market companies, from the Pacific Northwest and New York. We don’t really do too much international stuff, especially when there’s so much great stuff being made in America
Savannah’s newest retail salvation for men, Arc has taken center stage. Beginning as a vintage boutique for men and women, they have very carefully transitioned into both new and old apparel, gifts, and specialty grooming products. Their rapid growth and success is source for inspiration, and no matter where that takes them, quality and vintage charm will always be their greatest attribute.
“GUYS ARE MORE OPEN TO BE EXPRESSIVE AND EXPLORATORY. I THINK IN THE HEART OF EVERY GUY, THEY WANT TO STAND OUT, JUST LIKE THEIR GIRLFRIEND. WHETHER IT’S A FLASHY TIE OR A WATCH, THAT JUST SETS IT OFF.”
Q: WHAT TYPE OF MEN’S CLOTHES DO YOU CARRY? A: Everything is geared towards someone who might be conservative but they all have a unique spin, I think all guys want to explore fashion and style themselves in a way to stand out but not be overly fashion-fashion. One shirt has a threepocket detail or the cuff might have something unique about it for a basic line. Our cobalt blue pants have been very popular, once again a pop on conservative. It’s a traditional jean of a different shade. Q: HOW WOULD YOU GENERALIZE THE BEHAVIOR OF YOUR MALE SHOPPERS? A: For the most part they are inquisitive, observant, and they take their time. So we have a lot of guys who will come back, and I’m the same way.
They don’t just buy, they use different sources like online, and consider what they will do for them in the long run. For example, they wouldn’t often shop for a shirt they’d wear that night, similar to girls. We have to make more educated decisions with the men in mind because there is so much uncertainty. Q: YOU MUST KEEP THEIR SELECTICISM IN MIND WHEN YOU’RE BUYING. A: You must be selective very much for guys. Most of our clothes have a vintage flare, because we’ve come from vintage. But lines that look to the past, with a modern idea of what a man should look like, is what we appreciate and carry. It’s not as much trend-driven as it is classicism, just a very well dressed modern man. Products that have longevity and are easy-to wear throughout your lifetime, like that suit for any type of event or profession. And personally, for me, clothes have to be soft. We don’t like stiff, rigid clothes because it’s all about how you feel when you’re wearing your favorite tee. Q: YOU STARTED WITH VINTAGE, HOW DO YOU THINK VINTAGE CLOTHES APPEAL TO MEN? A: I’ve noticed that the guys who shop vintage are looking to stand out in a certain way, because you can only find that one piece. It’s about looking to the past for a piece that will really personalize a modern wardrobe, so you accomplish an overall scope of complete uniqueness. They are very easy to mix and match because there are little frills or over-detailing, because there is much more focus on craftsmanship. The most popular men’s vintage pieces are jackets and accessories, because guys are less likely to wear used items that were worn very close to the body. You would never want vintage pants, which is why we don’t carry them; because guys know how guys live, they wear their clothes to death. A lot of the vintage you find for men is destroyed from the 50’s, it’s not dry cleaned or cared for the same as women’s vintage.

FOR MAN’S BEST FRIEND Every man knows the importance of having the proper gear in order to have a successful hunt. Not only is it important for the hunter to have all their gear, but it is just as important for your dog as well. Cabelas is a great place to outfit your hunting dog with all of their needs, at an affordable price and great quality. The camouflage vest is great for your dog when hunting in cold weather. It serves as a layer of protection from broken ice or debris. The reversible orange and camouflage collar can be used for either deer hunting or duck hunting. Depending on where you are hunting, you may not know how well kept the grounds are and may be unaware of stumps and sticks coming up from the ground. If your hunting dog were to step on something of this sort it could puncture the pads on their paws. The dog booties will protect their pads from becoming hurt, while also being very durable and comfortable for them to wear. Cabelas has many products for every “man’s best friend” and we understand how important they are to you. travel DESTINATION:ARGENTINA We sat down with expert waterfowl hunter, Mark Davis, to get the lowdown on every aspect of hunting in South America. It’s the perfect place to get away and enjoy a quality sport. Don’t know what to bring? No worries, we’ve got all of that information covered, all you have to do is put it in your suitcase!
Q: What are specific locations and resources of Argentina do you recommend?
A: I fly into Buenos Aires and then drive south through many little towns. The farm I hunt at is called La Mariana and it is 100,000 acres in size. They raise cattle and farm corn, wheat and soybeans. I also go to a sister farm on the Paranara River that is about same size and has the same name. I highly recommend these two farms.
Q: What do you enjoy most about hunting down there and how long have you been going?
A: There are several aspects that I enjoy about hunting in South America. Like traveling there and seeing different cultures and how they live and hunt, learning the language. There are different species you get to shoot; the ducks are more colorful and bigger. There is a limit to the amount you are allowed to shoot a day, which is 5 times the US limit. The guides are very helpful, and overall the hospitality is great, I loved the food and wine was incredible. I really enjoy the warmer weather compared to the hunting seasons back home. It’s really fun and I make a point to gather a bunch of buddies and plan a weeklong trip annually, I have for the past 10 years.
Q: How many days average are you hunting, and what activities do you do when you are not? A: The trip is for 10 days and since there winter is our summer I go in June. We hunt 7 of those days and hunt twice a day at sunrise for 2 hours and sunset for 3 hours. When not duck or goose hunting, we fish in the farm ponds or in the river. We also go dove and pigeon hunting in different grain fields.
“IT IS TRULY “GENTLEMAN’S HUNTING AT IT’S FINEST. WORLD CLASS SHOOTING, WORLD CLASS CUISINE, AND WORLD CLASS SERVICE.” –Mark Davis These are photos taken by Mark Davis on one of his many hunting trips to Argentina. He documented the different people and places in which he encountered.
hunting
ARGENTINA’S OWN TRADITION
Q: How much gear do you bring with you?
A: We take a lot of gear: several hunting jackets for different temperatures, a camouflage rain suit, Many hats (all camo), 10 pairs of socks, 2 sets long underwear, 5-6 hunting shirts. Two sets of chest waders and two pairs of knee high hunting boots. 4-5 pairs of hunting pants. 2 pairs of gloves. Casual clothes for traveling and hanging out at the lodge, which is called an Estancia. Two backpacks to carry your essentials into the field like duck calls, flashlight, snacks, water, multi tools, shotgun shells, which they call cartouches. Oil for your gun and some cleaning supplies for your gun. It takes two large duffle bags and a double gun case to get everything in it.
Q: What hunting brands do you swear by?
A: I shoot guns by Beretta; my clothes are from Orvis, Cabelas and Filson. Waders are from Cabelas, Filson hats, Orvis coats, shirts and pants.
Q: Where do you stay when you are down there?
A: We stay at the family Estancia of Emilio Perez. It has 10 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, 2 dens, big kitchen big dining room and 5 fireplaces. 12 people that do all the various jobs from chef, housekeepers, butlers and a masseuse staff it. There are also bird boys that are assigned to you (everyone has at least one.) Sometimes you ride horses out to the duck blinds or they take you in trucks.
WILD GEAR There are so many neat gadgets available for duck hunting, but I have chosen to highlight a few from Cabelas. A must have when riding in the boat before sunrise is this large camo spotlight. It provides maximum light to get you to your duck blind safely. Our personal favorite gadget for navigating the open waters is the Garmin GPS. It has a long lasting battery life and is easy to use. A perfect way to stow your guns is the back of the seat triple gun holder. This gadget is easy to install and gets our vote for best value gadget of 2012. This makes for easy access to your guns and also protects your investment.

Whiskey Rocks
cocktails HAPPY HOUR C L A S S I C As the fall season approaches there are many holidays, family celebrations and sporting events. We chose three drinks that are all time southern favorites among gentleman. The Bloody Mary is a standard drink served at brunch. The Mojito is a favorite “rum” drink and is currently fashionable yet traditional. Caymus is a popular mid priced cabernet that is known for its rich and lavish oak aromas.
LEISURE 2007 CAYMUS VINEYARDS CABERNET SAUVIGNON, NAPA VALLEY Caymus hits the mark for rich, lavishly soaked Cabernet Sauvignon with bold cassis, black cherry, loam and spice flavors that often verge on sweet. These wines offer lush texture along with considerable early appeal. The expensive Special Selection is made from the best lots of Cabernet and is aged in a somewhat higher percentage of new French oak than the Napa bottling. At a separate facility in Monterey County, Jon Bolta oversees the wildly popular Conundrum, a secret blend generally consisting of varying amounts of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Muscat, Sémillon and Viognier.
the
CLASSIC MOJITO
INGREDIENTS * Ice * 6 ounces light rum * 12 mint sprigs, or spearmint, 8 roughly broken apart * 6 tablespoons fresh limejuice * 4 tablespoons sugar * Club soda * 4 slices lime DIRECTIONS Place ice in beverage shaker, then add the rum, 8 broken up mint sprigs, lime juice and sugar. Shake well and serve over ice in a high ball glass. Top off each glass with a splash of club soda. Garnish each with a slice of lime and a sprig of mint.
LEISURE INGREDIENTS 1 small shallot, finely minced 1 stalk celery, tough strings peeled 1 radish, thinly sliced Kosher salt and freshly cracked pepper 5 ounces cold vodka, plus more for topping 5 ounces cold tomato juice 1 lemon, halved 1 teaspoon Angostura or Peychaud’s bitters 2 teaspoons creamy horseradish 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce 3 drops hot sauce
DIRECTIONS Put the minced shallot in a small strainer and rinse under cold water. (This will remove some of the raw onion flavor and help the shallot retain its crunch.) Pat dry, then transfer to a small bowl and add the celery, radish, and salt and pepper to taste. Combine the vodka, tomato juice, the juice of one lemon half, the bitters, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce in a small pitcher and stir. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add some crushed ice to 2 chilled glasses. Don’t overload the Bloody Mary with ice so the flavors remain intense, not diluted. Add a hearty spoonful of the shallot mixture, then pour in the tomato juice mixture, filling the glasses almost to the top. Add another spoonful of the shallot mixture. Top each drink with a splash of vodka, like a “floater,” and a squeeze of the remaining lemon half. Serve immediately.

GROOMING Saturday Surf NYC originated out of SOHO in 2009. They started out making surfboards and wet suits. They decided to diversify and add a line of high end men’s products. The men’s grooming line is the result of a collaboration with Baxter of California, and includes skin and hair products along with sun care.
Having 60 years in the men’s grooming business, Baxter of California is recognized as the specialty grooming legend. They participate in collaborations beyond Saturdays NYC, and have found success in helping other brands better define their message through the dimension of scent.
The blueberry and ginseng shampoo has a subtle fragrance and is invigorating to the scalp. It can also help to improve circulation and hair growth. The Santalum and Cedrus candle is made out of soy wax and is another collaboration. A strong musk of both cedar and sandalwood are subtle enough to use daily and successfully mask the odors of your personal space. Its a much more stylish alternative to burning incense.
The Pacific Beach Soap leaves behind a clean smell and captures the essence of the Pacific Ocean. The added glycerin is great for dry skin.
Baxter’s Signature deodorant is now formulated for your sensitive skin. It is aluminum free, which means it won’t clog your lymph nodes, and is also alcohol free. It comes in an herbal musk with refreshing citrus.

COREY SMITH
Southern Born and Raised Songwriter
FRANK SINATRA
Ol’ Blue Eyes
Looking for an upbeat, modern country concert to attend this summer or fall? Check out Corey Smith during his tour of the Southern United States. Corey Smith, independent singer-songwriter, is set to tour through his ever-expanding tour base of nearly forty different cities in the southern United States. With an extensive musical background and heavy influence from his father, Corey Smith’s musical interest began at a very early age. Smith is unlike many other country artists, in that he writes tunes with a party-hard attitude, and considers himself a “happily domesticated recording artist.” His family and Atlanta background has laid the preset for his song writing and music career. Smith has many dedicated fans and has sold out many shows in the region. During his concerts, he is able to create an enthusiastic live performance with an acoustic guitar, his smooth voice and explicit lyrics.
Sinatra is one of the most influential male vocalists of the 20th Century. He is known for is lyrics and up-tempo beat. His music is perfect when puffing on a cigar or for a night of dancing. Men of all ages can identify with his lyrics.
JIMMY BUFFET
Jimmy Buffet is best known for his island music and is perfect to listen to while out on your boat or just relaxing with a cold drink in your hand. My personal favorites are Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise.
