by Priyanka Khanna Ladies!!(And boys) get your hands on prints this summer. So if you are the kind who already goes overboard with them, go wilder, go crazier with sheers in layers. If not, you should try minimalist prints with a vaguely futuristic feel to them. Digital artwork is seen on jackets, leggings, swimwear, shoes, the latest being cosmos digital prints. Prints have become a great way to incorporate color into the garment.

Valentino leads the way with ethereal gowns with painterly botanicals that fluttered seductively. Beautifully feminine is the way to go with both these and Dior Couture. The flower, the beloved Dior stylistic element is seen again. This time more abstract, with a powerful edge to them, but let’s not forget, with the elegance of nature. Comme des garcons takes the floral route but in a more conceptual, kooky, poetic and bold way. If only one garment could possess all of these wonderful qualities….sigh….Japanese floral motifs appear on brocade with vinyl inserts on Antonio Marras’s collections too. Flowers in pastels are just perfect for the summer.

Let’s work our way through prints…the dots are big again with Marc Jacobs collaborating with famed fine artists for the print work on the garments. Collaboration is seen again with the big fashion faces collaborating with fine artists and thus using their artworks commercially in le lady’s wardrobe. Aztec inspired prints are seen on the music seen with the likes of Rihanna wearing them. They are bold and graphic and can also be in pastels or monochromatic like the ASOS cropped pants. The queen of digital prints is back with her range of apparel for Top Shop, with gorgeous colors and sculptural silhouettes. If you want to keep it simple

and subtle, areal topography on Anthropologie dresses is the way to go. British student designers like Cassey Gan and Ekaterina Gerasimova narrated parables using print design on their garments. Their work is more symbolic of fashion design with a meaning. Camouflaged prints are seen as a symbolism for the protection of the innocence of children. Gerasimova’s jackets are seen as a collaboration of the illustrative with symbolic imagery. The creative collaboration between garment and print is a massive inspiration that she juxtaposes onto sophisticated and playfully elaborate garments. These are based on Latin American parables and lavish imagery, played with in her stylistic illustrations. The men on the streets in Milan were seen in prints too, on jackets, cool and comfy buttoned down shirts and pants. Wooyoungmi’s latest collection caters to menswear with a female touch, seen on grey floral suits. Jean Paul Gaultier menswear juxtaposes traditional French Toile prints with Indian inspired silhouettes like the bandhgala, the turban, and drop crotch pants. Yes, so if you’re one of them you should experiment too, or get your man to try these. The French toile prints were seen again, this time on bags made by Emily Dillon for Louis Vuitton.

We’ve all seen those people, with the stretched ears, tattoos and piercings, it’s hard to imagine a world at this point without them. Body Modification is a trend that has been steadily growing in popularity over the last few years and can be seen on anyone from corporate businessmen to the high fashion models on the runway. Body Modification is the deliberate altering of the human body for non-medical reasons like: aesthetics, sexual enhancement, religious reasons, self-expression, and even shock value. No one exemplifies this more then Model Rick Genest, who after appearing in Lady Gaga’s Born This Way video, pursued a career in the fashion industry. Genest also known as Zombie Boy had his entire body tattooed like a corpse, which garnished him, plenty of attention and thus inspiring Nicola Formichetti’s Autumn/Winter collection for MUGLER. Like piercings in the early 2000s, tattoos are becoming the new socially implanted trend across various types of people, and like most trends do, will slowly start to slow down as more and more people get them. Perhaps then individual will start having to find alternate means of shocking or expressing their creativity. Here are other less mainstream forms of body modification that are growing in popularity:

Behind the Seams:

Jeffrey Campbell The company to credit for making five inch heels with three inch platforms a staple in every womens wardrobe. by Katherine Yow Jeffrey Campbell has been making fashion forward shoes since 2000. His brand is known world wide and carried in many high-end department stores and boutiques. The brand started out as a family owned business with a large passion for fashion and work ethic. Jeffrey Campbell is based out of Los Angeles but now has offices worldwide. Even though the brand has had a “meteoric rise, they still maintain small business values. The Jeffrey Campbell design teams are not your average high-end designers with corner offices or over sized egos. They are very design driven with intent on making every shoe unique. sistants, interns and boutique or shop owners all around the world. They look to their customers for design and style ideas because they truly care about their wants and needs. Jeffrey Campbell shoes are known for their over the top, outlandish and vintage style with a flare to go along. The designs represent the ever so popular street styles while combing fashion forward aesthetics. No matter what a person’s individual style is or what their views may be, everyone can appreciate the Jeffrey Campbell brand. The JC brand consists of many difference styles and designs. The most popular JC shoe is the Lita Platform Boot and comes in a wide variety of colors, designs and fabrics. The Lita Platform Boot comes in black, tan, brown and many other basic colors. But for the girl who is feeling extra flirty you could go with the Lita Spike Platform Boot or the American Flag Boot if you are feeling patriotic. The “Night” platforms are also part of the JC craze; largely due to their epic design. At first glance they not only look hard to walk in but actually impossible. On the contrary

“Our end line consumers have a strong sense of style... and do not need some celebrity or a magazine to teach them how to dress.” they are functional but I would not recommend a long night of dancing! Just when you thought this shoe couldn’t get any cooler, try adding nails to the under and backside of the shoe with the Nail Night Platform. The Foxy Platform is similar in design to the Lita Boot but is a fun, flirty style for summer time. The JC isn’t just all about boots and sky high styles; they also have sneakers…but they aren’t your ordinary Nike sneaker. The Homg Stud sneaker stands at almost 2 inches high and has spikes or studs. This is no average sneaker but allows you to have a more 22 HAUS August 2012

relaxed look while still being fashion forward. Even though Jeffrey Campbell is known for their over the top shoes styles they do offer your basic shoe design. For example if you want a taste of the JC brand but aren’t sure if you can pull off the Shadow Stud Platform for example, you could go with Areas Low Boot or the Desmond Ankle Boot. Both men and women of varying ages wear Jeffrey Campbell shoes. No matter what the occasion or outfit you can find the perfect JC shoe to complement. A JC shoe will edge up any outfit and turn a boring ensemble into a fashion forward chic look. Some of the top retailers of Jeffrey Campbell shoes are Nasty Gal, Polyvore, Nordstrom, Solestruck and Karmaloop. Jeffrey Campbell shoes range from $65.00 $300.00. There have been many celebrity endorsements of Jeffrey Campbell’s including Lauren Conrad, Kim Kardashian, Demi Lovato and Olivia Palermo.

Color me Happy by Kayla Hockstedler

n the past bleaching your hair might have been synonymous with highly saturated color, damaged hair, and one of two basic colors for a full head of hair maybe a hot pink or a red, but nothing more than these basic colors. Today hair dyeing and bleaching has been brought to a new level where unique dye jobs can be created with many different techniques such as, bleach that is less damaging to your hair, and an assortment of colors that can give you any look that you could possibly dream up from mermaid to my little pony. BLEACH is the opposite of DIY, Pinterest, and home box coloring. They are the upscale beacon of hope for the trendy fashion able crowd looking to add a little more color and excitement in their daily grey scale filled life. One of the best places where you can get these dream dye jobs is BLEACH which is originally based in London, England where they currently own and operate three salons, and recently opened one in New York and are looking to expand into the Los Angeles market. Some of the stylists at BLEACH are known for making quite the impact on London Fashion week, editorial spreads in various magazines, and VIPS who want custom dye jobs such as Florence Welch, Mia Wasikowka, and M.I.A.

distressed their own denim, rocked the mohawk, and created their own one of a kind hair styles at home. BLEACH is homage to this generation, but also brings the fashion trends of current seasons. When creating these custom dye jobs BLEACH has created their own techniques, some of which are ground breaking and definitely fun. Some of the many services is a dip dye also called “bleachenders” where your hair is bleached from the tips at a various scale giving your ends a ombre effect. A virgin dye is where your full head is bleach from its natural color. This is done with a special bleach of their own concoction that allows them to strip the color from the client’s hair without causing major damage. One of the main ingredients for this special concoction is TIGI deep conditioner.

Another creation that can be done with the help from their star stylist such as Sam Teasdale is stenciling where certain parts of the hair is bleached, this results in shapes such as hearts or stars in a color set against the rest of your hair. However, not all of these custom dye jobs are permanent they also offer temporary color sprays which give your hair that fun color but also can be This is a throwback to the 1980’s style that was washed out in three to four days. Each of these so popular with the punk rock generation. Who styles can be achieved for a moderate price with 27

a full head color running at seventy five pounds, a dip-dye (bleachenders) eighty pounds, and a full heads of highlights will cost you one-hundred twenty pounds. One of the recent dyeing trends that BLEACH has grasped onto is where the roots of your hair are dyed a color such as pink and the rest of your hair is left at its natural color. These dye jobs would not even exist if it was not for the creative mind of Alex Brownwell who has been dyeing hair since the age of twelve and came up with many of the unique techniques that are used in his salon. Since then he has also worked for many of designers during London’s Fashion Week such as Craig Lawerence and Markus Lupfer. He also has worked for many magazines such as Nylon, Wonderland, Vogue, W, Dazed and Confused, and V Man as a hairstylist and colorist. He has also worked for various companies by styling for various advertisements such as Asos, Top Shop and did a complete campaign for Jigsaw for the Fall/Winter in 2011.

One of the major creative issues that BLEACH studios has to overcome is constantly coming up with new and innovative ideas for their one of a kind looks. One of the ways that the stylist experiment with new looks is by creating BLEACH “Barbie’s”. This is where the stylist work out their creative hair design ideas on their dolls. They construct these looks with sharpie, hair dye, and of course by giving the dolls a quick trend. When creating they also make a customer profile to accompany the BLEACH Barbie’s new look. Each of these looks are unique and colorful, and are appropriate reaction to the dull and dreary that is our recent economic climate. These hair styles make life a little extra interesting and make you a little younger with the colorful hair drawing inspiration from mermaids and my little pony. BLEACH is working towards the goal of taking the DIY and obnoxious out of hair bleaching and making it a little more fashionable and glamorous.

Alex Brownwell also listed numerous tips on the do’s and don’ts of hair dressing on their website; 1. Do use Leave-in treatments to blow dry your hair 2. Do try on wigs to see what suits you 3. Do research your salon and colorist, make sure they are experienced in what you want 4. Don’t bleach your hair if it is too fragile, there are many alternatives 5. Don’t, be cheap, a DIY color job is very expensive and hair to fix 6. Don’t be scared of your boss being annoyed if you have pink hair at work, the more people that push it, the more acceptable it will become in the workplace.

econstruction and reconstruction are two ideas that lend themselves not only to interior design but fashion as well. This idea was typically used with vintage items, where customers simply thrift for gently used items, but now has continued into those items being used to make an entirely new piece. For the up coming season expect to see an increase of niche one of a kind pieces that can be found on sites like Etsy.com. The reason for this is because consumers now don’t want the same cookie cutter products that can be found in mass production but would prefer unique items. For those who prefer higher end accessories they should check out Dean Sideway’s Jewelry. Sidaway has the exquisite talent of taking vintage or masculine materials

and feminizing them beautifully. For instance, for his shoulder pad piece Dean, (fig 1.) combines ceramic and wool within the type of fashion accessory that is used to broaden a women’s shoulders and make her appear more masculine instead the soft white palette as well as delicacy of the materials blend beautifully to create an innocent sweetness for its wearer. Another piece that fits into the Subnation: Urban Renewal trend is his vintage jewelry (and bag) incased in resin (fig 2-3). These Items fit so well in the trend because not only do they reuse material but the allow for the items to still showcase their natural beauty.

Concrete Steel and Urban Renewal by Kendra Bradley

by Kendra

The Modern Aesthetic is a style that is constantly reimaging itself but, has always had three underlining features that are always utilized; concrete, steel, and glass. This idea remains true in the S/S 13 interior trend Urban Renewal, which takes inspiration from warehouses, subway systems, as well as, recycled industrial parts. Typically most retail establishments opt for their own designed store, which requires the location to either be torn down or remodeled, but with Urban Renewal the location is maintained the way it is and the retail space is created from the aesthetic of that specific location. This technique allows for individuality between stores while still following a company’s brand image. In this economic climate many companies have turned to design alternatives to maintain brand loyalty while keeping costs low, from this sub nation was born. Due to Urban Renewal ability to mold with multiple styles and its lost cost rate, this trend will be a better choice to utilize rather then the expensive remodeling techniques of the past. What Makes Up Urban Renewal? This trend takes an innovative approach to the way the three materials applied to the space. Concrete normally seen on the base of an interior location, now transforms itself into unique decorative features like lamps and table-tops Concrete is now utilized as an aesthetic accent, where as it was previously used merely in construction. This adds a utilitarian feel to any interior space making it easier to complement different types of merchandise, or furniture that an individual wishes to add to the room. Steel also plays an intricate role in design, subtle pops of steel can also aid in this design aesthetic because just like concrete, steel can meld seamlessly with various color palettes, or accessories and will be beneficial when a store changes throughout the seasons.

deals with the overall experience when a customer enters the store, which is why the interior space is so important. By applying the Urban Renewal trend to new businesses this not only allows for brands to maintain cohesive retail outlets but, provides enough individuality to each store because of the variations of the initial store buildings themselves. This aspect is very important when building customer bonds, because a customer may chose one store over the other based on the experience they had in a store and not so much on product alone. The aesthetic is not the only reason for choosing this trend but the fact that the accessories of the store can be taken from the building its self saves in costs of buying entirely new items. For instance old piping or other industrial parts can be reworked and added where needed to help preserve the environment as well as money in the company’s pocket.

Why Choose Urban Renewal? Merchandising does not only deal with product but also 37

old and have been married for 12 years and been with your man for 20 years you look for another way to spice up your life Mary: I honestly don’t know what was so intriguing. I think a lot of the sex acts were disturbing, and don’t know how a chick would even oblige to the acts (she’s a virgin, and then is automatically ok with bondage and stuff ) I guess it was intriguing because I could “live” in that world without physically experiencing it, and be super kinky and almost abnormal about it. Cindy: I think what’s most intriguing about 50 Shades is it’s subject is so unknown to a lot of people. I think women are interested in knowing more, which makes the book appealing.

Mary: I know this sounds so cliché, but the story was actually pretty cool. And despite the fact that Christian Grey was a complete freak, when he was “getting cured” from his weird sex dominatrix/submissive fetish... He some how turned into the most intriguing man ever and made me want to find a guy like that (but not that extreme) Cindy: The best parts are definitely the sex scenes.

6. What didn’t you like about the book? Anna: The sexual experiences and the constant talk about sex and the props got old and rather gross Mary: I didn’t like how annoyingly obsessed Christian and Ana were with each other. Like after one week of knowing each other, he had some weird control over her, and she was ok with that. 3. What did you think the book was going to be like Cindy: There was nothing that really bothered me about the book before you read it? Anna: I thought the book was going to be focused around sex and not have much of a story line. 7. How did you benefit from the book? Mary: honestly didn’t know what to expect. I knew it was Anna: I did not benefit one bit from the book other than going to be pretty pornographic, but like some stuff you an amusing story and a fun summer read see in R-rated movies. I was not thinking dominatrix/sub Mary: I didn’t in anyway benefit from it. Just an unrealistic situations with bondage, whipping, silver balls up woo- view of what a relationship is like. Fifty Shades of Fame by Katherine Yow

here have been several books to end up on the New York Times Best Seller list but none so interesting as Fifty Shades of Grey. This erotic novel has stirred up quite a craze and woman can’t get enough. The trilogy has sold more than 31 million copies and is the fastest selling paperback in history, even surpassing Harry Potter. The novel has received many mixed reviews, so we thought it would be interesting to interview three different woman of various ages and get their perspective. We asked Anna who is 42 years old, Mary who is 23 and Cindy who is 19 various questions regarding the book. Below is a list of questions we asked them along with their answers:

1. Why did you read the book?

Anna: I read the book because there was such hype over it and it was a trilogy so I figured I would at least try the first one Mary: Well, all of my sister’s friends were talking about it at her bachelorette party. And one was even reading it while we were there (talk about lame). One of my good friends was reading it, and said it was a must read. Pure curiosity. Cindy: I first heard about the book from one of my close friends, and then continued to hear about it from everyone else I knew! Finally, I broke down and bought it just to find out what all the fuss was about.

2. What about the book intrigued you?

Anna: I must admit - the topic - when you are 40 plus years

4. Did the book meet your expectations or was it 8. Were you embarrassed for other people to know different than you originally thought? you were reading 50 Shades of Gray? Anna: It was exactly what I expected on the sex side but the story line was much deeper. Christian Grey was a man who had a troubled life prior to being adopted. His life as a result was a train wreck - he never felt he was worth anyone’s love therefore he treated others like shit - physically and mentally Mary: It exceeded my expectations. A majority of the time I was thinking, how in the world did this housewife mom think of all this??! I didn’t even think stuff like that even existed. Like I knew it was going to be pretty raunchy, but I didn’t think it would have been that raunchy. I kept reading because I wanted to know more about the psychology behind Christian Grey. I’m interested to see how he turned out the way he did and why. You learn a little about it, but it still leaves you wondering, Ok yeah I get that, but why? Cindy: The book definitely met, and surpassed my expectations. It’s sometimes hard for me to sit down and read a book, but 50 Shades is a page-turner!

5. What did you like about the book?

Anna: I liked the deeper message about troubled lives and how people suffer and how they can rehabilitate themselves

Anna: I was not at all embarrassed - fun book fun read fun topic - I really don’t care what other people think of me or what I read. I am strong enough with my own morals and values and know how I walk.. Mary: No not at all. Although, my mom had heard about it, and knew I was reading it and was asking questions. It was kind of awkward with her aware of the fact that I couldn’t put it down... She was like I wish a porn book wasn’t the only type of book that got you reading... Whatever, I read a lot already, she just never saw me since I don’t live at home anymore.. But that was the only thing that kind of made me embarrassed. It was seriously the hot topic of the town (Ocala isn’t big at all... and all the housewives talk about it at the country club) Cindy: I was absolutely not embarrassed at all about reading it, but I am also not a very modest person. I can understand why some women would feel embarrassed about reading the book around others, but I think they should just embrace the phenomenon if they already choose to read it.

hen looking for new trends there are several set standards that help qualify a new trend as the newest thing for fashion lovers everywhere to grab onto. These standards include the trend being a logical evolution from a precursor, the building of a successful trial balloon, a social response to change, and an expression of a cultural drift may be telling on paper as to what is the newest trend has hit the runway. However, one of the best way to see new trends is on the streets. Street style brings out the best trends with people taking their unique fashion sense to the next level and this is often the catalyst to a new and up and coming trend for fashion designers to take part in.

50 HAUS August 2012

One of the major trends that you will see on the streets and the runway is fur. This fur can either be real or faux, new or vintage, dyed on undyed. The main trend will be fur and how you choose to wear it in your own wardrobe. Fur will be brought to new limits with it being dyed in a variety of colors such as greys and dip dyed in blue. There will also be a mix so that dressier pieces will be paired with more casual day looks whereas more day looks will be dressed up to a more glamorous look. In history fur has been a sign of wealth and power, it was very hard to make and therefore only major leaders would be given the privilege of wearing the heat inducing material. Later in history fur became a produced material, but it was expensive to produce and to get therefore it eventually became associated with Hollywood glamour status. The use of fur is also prevalent among royalty. Now the fur trend has switched to a little more rock and roll and less glamorous mostly with faux fur. Faux fur has come onto the fashion scene with it going from being cheaply made to becoming a more expensive material. Another trend that will be seen in months to come is the use of plastic in fashion. The use of plastic in fashion is being used to bring fashion a little more fu53

turistic. Mostly the plastic trend has stayed within accessories. However some daring individuals have brought plastic into the world of fashion with dresses, pants, and other fashionable items. This trend is quite similar to the past trend of 1960’s London with mods such as Twiggy wore custom made plastic gowns, along with white plastic platforms, and clear plastic jackets. Some designers that have brought plastic to high fashion is Burberry who have used plastic for making trench coats, capes, and purses, whereas Louis Vuitton has brought the plastic trend to light with the use of plastic for their purses. Each of these trends have had a logical evolution from a precursor, been built on a successful trial balloon, a social response to change, and an expression of a cultural drift. Each of these shows what maybe been hitting the runway in the future, but definitely what is already hitting the streets.
