university of texas alumni center

advanced design | fall 2011

i worked with a partner to design an alumni center for the university of texas in downtown austin. the site is located across the iconic capitol building, a city earmark that was highlighted through the design of the alumni center. the building includes a restaurant, bar, gym, and hotel. a significant element of the building is the great hall room that is a separate and elevated structure that seems to hover over the entrance and featuring a floor to ceiling window facing northeast towards the capitol. adjacent to the great hall on the second floor is a courtyard where the ground is punctured to allow light to flood the bar below with a forest of columns that parallels the birch trees above.

galveston shore master plan

advanced design | summer 2011

galveston has been in a state of recovery since hurricane ivan hit in 2004. the goal of this master plan was to restore liveliness to the shores of galveston by creating an area that promotes tourism and unites the urban and natural landscapes of the city. a series of maps were made to compare public vs. private spaces and to measure levels of activity in the area. the master plan seamlessly merges the tourist and local areas by adding park spaces, running paths, plazas, and rezoning pedestrian and vehicular access. to keep with the industrial character of this particular coastline, shipping containers were reused to create affordable and dynamic spaces. each shipping container pod holds different programs and thus uniquely designed to serve multiple purposes and to transform the space to accomodate for the day or night. 10

zilker park clubhouse

design vi | spring 2010

for design vi, students are to design a building with a comprehensive understanding of building structure, mechanical and electrical systems, and site considerations. the project was a redesign of the existing zilker park clubhouse that sits atop a hill in the park overlooking the city and the lake. the program is a venue for events such as weddings. the location of the site creates a unique opportunity to highlight the austin skyline, which can be seen from almost any room in the building with floor to ceiling windows. in the main rooms, the windows pivot out like garage doors to blend the indoor and outdoor space and to create a way to passively cool the building. 13

organic abstraction | peach seed

advanced design | fall 2009

the goal of this studio was to explore an organic form and abstract it. the peach seed proved to be more complex after analysis, and the process of abstraction became a simplification in order to understand its structure and pattern. using the 3d modeling program, rhinoceros, i took the 2d sketches of the peach seed and made concentric individual shells that orbitted around an axis. the product was a 3d model of my interpretation of a peach seed. after many material experiments, the final product was resin shells that were made by pouring resin into cnc routed foam molds. the most intriguing part about this project was not found through the success of the final product, but rather the beauty in the mistakes it took to get there.

glass sculpting

study in italy | fall 2010

i had the opportunity to work with a local glass sculptor during my semester abroad in castiglion fiorentino, italy. in addition to sculpting my hands, i decided to sculpt an anatomical human heart. i started with a clay mold and cast it in plaster. with the plaster negative, i filled it with glass pieces that melted after being placed in the kiln.
