BREAKING GROUND
In 2022, a 12-acre site was purchased for the Journey21 learning and living community for adults with IDD. This parcel is located at the southeast corner of Old School House Road and Hackney Way in Pabst Farms in Oconomowoc.
On May 11, 2022, Journey21 broke ground for their first building on the site-construction of its Enrichment Center, a 10,000 square foot facility, which will serve as a hub for programs and classes. There will be cooking, craft and fitness classes, art and music instruction, a technology lab, a multi-purpose room and patio, among many other features. These offerings will be available to other nonprofit and community organizations and the building will also serve as a gathering space for community events. This facility will open in April 2023.
Following the construction of the Enrichment Center, Journey21 will build and manage a for-sale residential community that will be a safe and inclusive neighborhood of one- and two-bedroom condominiums, one- and two-bedroom cottages, and amenities designed for the needs and aspirations for approximately 40 adults.
PROGRAMS & OUTINGS
The popularity of Journey21’s Programs, Outings and Clubs for adults with IDD skyrocketed, with numbers of participants and programs tripling over the past year. Over 120 participants engaged in learning new skills, building friendships, and having fun-filled days in a safe and positive environment. The calendar of outings continued to expand throughout the year to include early evening and weekend activities.

Journey21 also initiated a webinar series, launching in 2023, offering informational workshops and webinars on topics to help families that have sons and daughters with IDD along the journey toward adulthood and independence. Topics include: Journey21 Academies, Understanding Long-Term Care, Financial Planning for Adults with IDD, guardianship, and other legal decision-making options.
EDUCATION & VOCATIONAL SKILLS
Once students turn 21, they exit the high school system and “fall off the cliff” as there are minimal post-secondary options available for adults with IDD. In looking at the next steps of natural post-secondary options including educational, employment, residential, social activities, and vocational training, the IDD population is greatly underserved.
In response to this community need, in the fall of 2022, three new educational components were developed by Journey21, in collaboration with the Waukesha County Technical College, which are called Academies. The Academies will be launched in 2023 and will provide a highly structured after 21 curriculum (a two year program with 32 courses) called The Life Academy, where our adults receive life skills training, career readiness, internships and work experiences, so that they can continue to develop their independent living skills, socialization skills and build community relationships.
The 18 to 21 Transition Academy, is designed for young adults with IDD, ages 18 to 21. The goal of that program is to increase the daily independence of each student by providing them with the necessary skills and experiences in the areas of communication, socialization, personal health, and vocational skills.
The Summer Academy, for adults with IDD, age 16 and older, will provide experiences that increase independent living and social skills, volunteer participation, and personal health awareness.
