SECRET 7” (COLLABORATION WITH EMILY BALL) Context Secret 7" is an annual event that combines music and art for a good cause. 7 tracks from 7 of the best-known musicians around are pressed 100 times into 7" vinyl. Creatives are invited from around the world to interpret the tracks in their own style, resulting in a one-of-a-kind sleeve for every 7". 700 sleeves will be exhibited Downstairs At Mother in London on 12 & 13th April, then on Record Store Day you can get your hands on one, or more, for £45 a piece. You don’t know who created the sleeve, or even which song it’s for until you have parted with your cash – the secret lies within. This years donations will go towards War Child, a charity that protects children living in the world's most dangerous war-inflicted areas.
Brief To design a record sleeve for Massive Attack's Karmacoma for the Secret 7" competition brief.
Specifications 1. Your design must not include the artist’s name or the song title - it’s a secret after all 2. Concentrate your design on what will be the front, only this will be visible on our exhibition walls 3. Dimensions should be 182mm x 182mm, with a 3mm bleed. That’s 188mm x 188mm in total 4. Your file must be produced in CMYK so it’s setup to be printed. Any PMS specials will be converted. Metallic or fluorescent inks cannot be reproduced 5. Your file must be 300dpi 6. Your file must be saved as either a Tiff, JPEG, EPS or PDF 7. Do try and reduce the size of your file as much as possible 8. You can submit a sleeve design for as many of our tracks as you like 9. You must upload designs by the 17th February 2014 10. If we email you with the good news that you’ve made it into the show please keep it a secret. It makes for a much better project!
Preparation/Research suggestions You will need to research into Massive Attack and the bands background along with a more in depth look at the lyrics of the song in order to get an idea for a successful concept. It could also help to look into the music video and how the director has interpreted the song.
Evidence – for this project students should submit Record sleeve
