V&A MUSEUM OF CHILDHOOD Context: Welcoming over 400,000 visitors through its doors every year, the V&A Museum of Childhood in London's Bethnal Green houses the Victoria and Albert Museum's collection of childhood-related objects and artefacts, spanning the 1600s to the present day. The Museum's exhibitions and displays explore a broad range of subjects relating to childhood, from design, photography and fashion, to play and social issues.
Brief The brief is to create a new guide for the Museum of Childhood, something up to date and visually appealing to its audience. You will need to consider the relationship between type and image and how to display all the relevant information correctly and appropriately. You should take into account the type of audience that will not only visit the museum but will read the guide. The guide should include general information about the museum, facts and information about the various collections and exhibitions and a direction guide including a museum floor plan. You should also consider ideas for promotional materials such as posters/leaflets etc. A new image for the museum, something that will create an exciting buzz.
Preparation/Research suggestions You will need to visit the Museum of Childhood to inform your research and design outcomes. You should also look at previous guides the museum has used and other successful and visually aesthetic guides from different museums. Research would be useful in other areas such as childhood toys, books, clothing etc. Look into some interesting ways museums have promoted themselves, promotional material in general. Think about ways you could incorporate the theme ‘childhood’ throughout the design.
Evidence – for this project students should submit Promotional material for the Museum (branding) A new guide for the Museum of Childhood
