EXTENDED PRACTICE STATEMENT OF INTENT Name: Kathryn Scarlett Brooks Blog Address: http://k-brooks1114-ep.blogspot.co.uk Statement of intent: For this year I intend to focus my practice mainly on Publishing and Editorial, this will become evident on most of my brief outcomes. This year my briefs will make up a selection of Publishing and Editorial, Branding and Identity and print based designs. I hope to use a range of processes and printing methods to create some of the work this year. Themes that will run through my briefs would include memories, photography, nature, words, language, history and literature, as these are topics I am interested in and want to incorporate in some way. Layout will be a key area I will look to improve, and strengthen the relationship between type and image. The relationship between type and image is something I have been interested in and so creating successful outcomes throughout the year will drastically improve my practice. I would also like to look at exploring different research methods and how this information could develop and further my final outcomes. By the end of the year I would like to be able to show a body of work that shows interesting and visually successful outcomes through editorial, branding and print. The work and deliverables should vary but the overall portfolio should be consistent and show my interests and personality through the work.
Subjects / Themes Publication and editorial, branding and identity, print. Subjects focused on throughout my briefs would be editorial based work with a smaller focus on branding and identity. Photography, print, words, culture, history, colours, stock, screen print, layout, illustration, image & type. Subjects from specific briefs include: childhood, memories, culture, language, history Branding for museum, perfume Publication and editorial on contemporary culture, the French language
Design Disciplines / Creative Development Layout – InDesign Improve Photoshop skills Photography – Organise and leave myself enough time to be able to take professional photographs of my work, as past experience has taught me this can make all the difference. Photography, editorial, illustrator, type and image, layout, branding, print, collaboration
Practical Skills / Workshops – what, why and when? Experimental print making, screen print – this will be for the brief focusing on a visually interesting and aesthetically pleasing print outcomes, focusing mostly on nature. Laser cutting – I think this style of wooden cut design could work nicely for the perfume rebranding. Photoshop workshop – to improve my Photoshop skills to enable me to approach the digital side of the collaboration brief: Spectrum.
Brief 1:
Deadline
Contemporary Culture
Rationale: Contemporary culture refers to the culture we currently live in. It includes the social, political and economical climate. Create a zine/a collection of zine’s that best display contemporary culture in different cities using photography as your main source of visual research. Any other images, text, literature, art references etc. should be used to support the zine as an accurate portrayal of contemporary culture amongst a small selection of cities of your choice.
Brief 2:
Deadline
Zanzibar Spice Tour Product Branding
Rationale: Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, East Africa. One of Zanzibar’s main industries is spices. ‘We have developed a special Spice Tour with in-depth information not only about spices, but also organically grown herbs and detailed descriptions about their uses in traditional dishes.’ Our guided walking tour passes through villages and spice plantations, a walk through the farms as spice farms workers climbs trees, seek out specific plants and cuts off various barks, letting you see, feel and taste everything.’ Throughout the spice tours customers are exposed to fresh natural herbs, spices, fruits and flowers. Using all the natural ingredients from the plantation the spice tours are able to sell herbs, spices, soaps and perfumes. The outline of this brief is to brand and package/label the perfume and soap.
Brief 3
Deadline
The French Language
Rationale: Learning a language is difficult. There are many rules to come to terms with that may not apply to your first language. The French language is one of the most popular in the world with 128 million Francophones: speak French (as a native or adopted language) fluently and use it on a regular basis. French and English are the only languages that are taught in every country. The task is to create a publication that allows beginners to get a better understanding of the basics of French. It is up to you which direction you take, whether it is something as simple as the French alphabet, numbers 150, basic words, popular phrases or all of the above combined. The publication should be displayed in a visually attractive way, taking into consideration layout and the relationship between type and image.
Brief 4:
Deadline
Museum of Childhood
Rationale: Museum of Childhood. The Museum's exhibitions and displays explore a broad range of subjects relating to childhood, from design, photography and fashion, to play and social issues. The brief is to create a new guide for the Museum of Childhood, something up to date and visually appealing to its audience. You will need to consider the relationship between type and image and how to display all the relevant information correctly and appropriately. You should take into account the type of audience that will not only visit the museum but will read the guide. Think about promotional material for the museum (posters, flyers etc.)

Deadline
Unsung Heroes (past ISTD brief)
Rationale: ‘There are two kinds of heroes. Heroes who shine in the face of great adversity, who perform an amazing feat in a difficult situation. And heroes who live among us, who do their work unceremoniously, unnoticed by many of us, but who make a difference in the lives of others.’ Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono President of Indonesia Media produce constant articles and programmes on the rich and famous – tracing their life stories and celebrating their achievements. But what about ordinary people whose lives go unwritten – your gran’ or grandfather who lived through a war ... the old immigrant gentleman who came as a young man to be a doctor ... the group of friends who have travelled abroad to build homes for the poor ... the charity workers who save lives in disaster zones ... or perhaps the woman who beat breast cancer despite the odds... . People such as these continue to achieve great success with little or no recognition. Let’s look for fresh and effective ways to celebrate these often un-recognised heroes and heroines. Create an informative typographic experience that brings your chosen ‘Unsung Heroes and Heroines’ to life in a submission supported by high quality research and intellectual rigour. Use whatever methods and media you consider appropriate to convey your solution effectively.

London Stories
Rationale: Across the ages, London has produced and inspired countless stories. Fictitious or real characters and events in this amazing city have always held fascination, from the anecdotal urban myth to grand tales of historic legend. The aim of the competition is to attract artwork for display that is colourful, inspiring and celebrates a vibrant, multi-layered London. Visually capture a well-known or lesser known narrative in a single image; all stories, current or historical, real or fictional, which feature this amazing city are welcome - your imagination is the limit. Stories could be those seen in a film or play, heard in poetry or music, read in literature or an urban myth. You can use a variety of techniques to create your final image, whether it is purely illustration or a combination of text, image, illustration and various processes.

Pen Pals
Rationale: In the days of phones, email, and text messages, letter writing can seem hopelessly outdated. But it’s an art worth bringing back, and not because of some misplaced sense of nostalgia either. The writing and reception of letters will always offer an experience that modern technology cannot touch. Find the big idea to promote having a “traditional” Pen Pal – one you write to, not tweet, wall post or DM. Make friends the world over - have a Pen Pal! This is a friend that you can practice language, literacy and share stories with, learning about culture and lifestyle along the way.

Spectrum (Collaboration with Emily Ball)
Rationale: Designival is the North's biggest and most established design festival of 2012. Taking place in Liverpool on November 22nd - 23rd at some of the coolest new venues in the city, Designival will feature a whole host of must-see events intended for the design obsessed. Design a campaign that promotes Designival and engages the target audience (design professionals) through a campaign message: “Design is....” Produce a promotional campaign that showcases the beauty in experimental print forms and manual processes. By using mixed media, combining digital and analog formats such as Photoshop, film photography and screen-printing, create an exciting and engaging body of work that best promotes this creative event.
CoP / Research Theme For my dissertation research project I will be looking into the design of the London Underground. This is quite a broad topic and so with detailed and synthesised research I can narrow down particular areas of the topic I wish to find out more about. Not only am I interested from a design point of view but also for its political, social and economic values. I have been looking closely at Oliver Green, former curator at the London Transport Museum, who now writes various research books on the Design of the Underground. I will be attending a talk by Oliver Green that focuses on Frank Pick’s London and his passion for good applied design in everything from posters and graphics to station architecture, from bus engineering to tube trains, giving London the best public transport system in the world. I have not decided on a specific title question as of yet but have planned most of my research on how the tube has contributed to London as a city and the success of the design throughout time. One potential question would be ‘How has the iconic design of the Underground contributed to London’s success as a major world city?’ or ‘How have Frank Pick’s designs influenced the style of London?’ Primary research will include surveys focusing on the design aspect of the Underground, which will help develop my research. In terms of secondary research I will look at a series of channel four documentaries that focus on the design of the Underground.
RESEARCH ACTIVITY:
Deadline
Email I recently went on a guided Underground poster talk in celebration of 150 years of the London Underground. I intend to email the man who gave the talk as he said he will be happy to answer any further questions. I will write some detailed and structured questions about the Underground poster designs to best help further my research. Listen to the online talk by Oliver Green The art of the Underground: 150 years of redesigning London.
