ImPower Youth Conference

Volume 212, Issue 6

Monthly Reminders: 

In celebrating the City of Hopewell's 100th Anniversary and in conjunction with the City Council's Strategic Plan, the ImPower Youth Conference was held on May 21st at The Beacon Theatre. The  ImPower Youth Conference served as a facilitator for the city of Hopewell's youth initiative by providing an event that empowered, engaged and educated the youth and young adults within the city. The conference mimicked professional career conferences by hosting various breakout sessions, featuring keynote speakers as well as group discusWard 4, Councilor Gore pictured sions.

This free conference was held for all seventh through 12th grade students and the only thing students were asked to do in return was bring a canned good or household item as a donation. This full day of events contained six different tracks with four breakout sessions each for the students and separate sessions for the parents to participate in. After a long day of learning and engaging, the youth participated in a networking ice cream social. With a vision like this, it was a given that HRHA would sponsor this event in addition to The Crater Regional Workforce Investment Group, the City of Hopewell and Project Discovery of Virginia.

Councilor Gore, Ward 4, worked diligently along with others to make this conference a success. “ Since my time on City Council I have constantly heard that people felt that there was nothing for youth in the City of Hopewell. I personally have tried to bring new programs, initiatives, and events to the City of Hopewell,” said Councilor Gore on her social media network. Councilor Gore also said “We have heard the need to provide new opportunities for youth and we fought hard to deliver the ImPower Youth Conference.” “Programs and events as such are of high importance as the young children are our future. They are our future doctors, lawyers and scientist; they are future engineers, artists and business owners,” says Terence Barber, Resident Services Specialist who has similar goals for youth initiatives.

HRHA Grievance Procedure HRHA has a Grievance Procedure that seeks to assure just and unbiased treatment of all residents and to provide procedures which are not unduly time consuming or complicated. The Authority will take required actions to ensure all grievants with special needs are accommodated to provide access to this Grievance Procedure. Should it become necessary for you to file a grievance, present your grievance personally, either orally or in writing, to the Authority’s Central Management Office or the Management Office where you reside within seven days, after the occurrence giving rise to the grievance. 1. That the complaint is being pursued in accordance with the Grievance Procedure. 2. The actual basis of the grievance. 3. The action of relief.

A copy of the Grievance Procedure can be found at the Community’s Management Office and at the Authority’s Central Management Office.

If you are unable to attend the orientation but would like your child to participate, please contact Terence Barber.

Mount Pleasant Baptist Church collaborated with HRHA in hosting the Piper Square Block Party on Saturday, May 14th. Youth flooded the community while having a blast eating cotton candy, playing football, jumping in the moon bounce, getting their face painted and more. It was truly great to see residents from Davisville, Piper Square and Thomas Rolfe united together to eat some food and have a great time. The annual Easter Eggstravaganza was scheduled for April but was canceled because of inclement weather. The Resident Services Department knows that the youth look forward to this event every year so this event was used as the make up event for them. Kids surrounded the DJ booth every single time raffle ticket numbers were called out, hoping they would be the lucky winner to get a gift card to Walmart, Target, Swader’s Sport Park and other local businesses. HRHA would like to thank every one who attended this spectacular event and would like to show appreciation to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church for their continued support for our communities. 3
