ASID OC DESIGN EXPO 2018
Today is the first day of your future!
I
once read somewhere that those who live in the past and cannot let go of it to move on with their lives, usually remember their past much better than what it actually was!
President’s Letter
Apparently our minds tend to hold onto happy moments, so, when you look back in time, many things that we stressed over, were angry of, or made us embarrassed or sad, don’t feel that bad anymore. So often, they even become funny memories!
W
hen it comes to dealing with the past, some people don’t let go! They are so stuck that they miss the moment, the now, the present, and consequently the future. Some people keep it in their hearts and move on - holding on tight to the lessons learned. And some people just go forward, with a fresh outlook every day, dealing with whatever comes next as a new experience. Whatever type you are, today is the first day of your future whether or not you are ready for it! And today, we need you!! At ASID OC, we are getting ready for transitioning the term soon. I know! I know! It feels like yesterday when my board and I were installed at the Gala, and it feels like a couple of weeks ago when we were strategically planning the year for you! But believe it or not, the incoming board is going through their leadership training, they have had sessions of strategic planning, and we are (almost) ready to let go, move on, and pass on the torch!

And right now, we need you!! We need you to step up, and be engaged as committee members or chair persons. We need you to send us notes on how we’ve been doing, what you loved and what not so much. We need you to give us suggestions, constructive criticism, and recommendation. Right now, we need you to plan an outstanding year. Today is the first day of our future at ASID OC! And together let’s make a bright and beautiful one!

The Value of Interior Design Depends on You
A
President Elect’s Letter
ligning oneself in the field of interior design with professional organizations such as ASID starts as early as student life and can further your potential as a professional designer sooner than later!
So many opportunities for growth are available by belonging to ASID starting out as a student member and onto an emerging professional, one gains alliance with multi-generational fellow practitioners and industry partners besides experiencing the opportunities for growth from such alliances and attending, participating or volunteering in our valuable chapter events like SCALE our National ASID Student Summit opportunity, our annual Design Expo, Gala and Design Awards including a Student Design Award opportunity, Student Career Day, Holiday Parties, Lunch& Learns, Design Challenges and Community Service, Mixers and Monthly Meetings featuring perks with CEU’s, fun, food, raffles, and and product knowledge.
A
full circle of value is offered through your membership that can become an extension of what you learn while in school and afterwards to answer your questions for career opportunities and how to acquire the skills to emerge forward in our ever-changing workplace. The experience is rich in value so reach out to us to find mentorship, mix, mingle and form lasting bonds to grow professionally at any level because the value of interior design depends on you! Because chapter membership for students is easier now than ever now to join with a one time fee of only $85 for the duration of school then upon graduation you may become an allied member by registering and sending your transcripts to National then from there as an emerging professional you will gradually pay the same dues as other designer members over the course of a five year spread! What a deal! Your chapter is interested in hearing what excites you about interior design and what kind of events you enjoy attending so please reach out to us to enlighten us! See you at the next chapter event!

2018
ASID OC Expo was held at the newly remodeled Renaissance Newport Beach Hotel on April 19th with over 50 participating Industry exhibitors to showcase the best and latest of their products and services, and 250 guests who truly enjoyed the event. Margaret Brown and Nathalie Wilson were the two Town Hall Speakers, and the keynote speaker of the evening was the one and only Melinda Ritz who shared her thoughts on the Future of Design which was her hit presentation recently seen at last year’s High Point Convention. Melinda’s 27 year career in design spans from celebrity Clients including Ellen DeGenerous & Portia De Rossi, Kim Kardashian & Kanye West, and Ryan Seacrest, to set design for movies like The Abyss and Basic Instinct and TV with Emmy Awards for her work on Will & Grace. There was mouth-watering food and drink to enjoy, great music played by Bang & Olufsen, a fun photo-booth sponsored by Pacific Sales, hourly opportunity drawings and games by different exhibitors, and some fabulous raffle prizes! We would like to thank all our exhibitors, attendees and our generous sponsors of the evening: Pacific Sales, Dacor, Fisher & Paykel, Cambria, Expressions Home Gallery, Subzero and Custome Comfort Mattress.

In the beginning of the program, all the Industry Partners who have made significant contributions during this term were recognized by the ASID OC President, Nazgol Seyedi and were given certificates of appreciation. The speaker of the evening was Sam Chauhan whose coaching techniques are truly revolutionary. He is known as The Mindset Guru and his results have been talked about in major press outlets including ESPN, The Chicago Tribune, NBC, and TIME Magazine. EMERGING PROFESSIONALS
Fashion Interiors
OC
ASID Emerging Professionals had a meeting on March 29th, 2018 at Fashion Interiors. Owners Sid & Marjan provided a lovely breakfast of croissant sandwiches, pastries, muffins, fruit and drinks. Emerging Professionals ate breakfast, roamed the showroom looking at the latest in window treatments and technology, as well as, networked before the talk. Bob Davis of Davis Insurance Agency an expert in many areas of insurance discussed Professional Liability Insurance to attendees. Mr. Davis mentioned what Professional Liability Insurance covers and what it does not. He also talk about the importance of knowing the exact date your coverage was started so there are no gaps in your coverage if you go to another company. All the designers in attendance expressed they had learned information they were not aware of before. It was a valuable talk and Mr. Davis answered questions as well. I’d like to thank Fashion Interiors for the swag bags and hosting. In addition, Mr. Bob Davis for sharing his expertise on Professional Liability Insurance.

St ud en tC or ne r Student Shadow Week Returns This year ASID OC brought back Student Shadow Week in an effort to bridge the gap between student designers and Orange County design professionals. The program was once led by ASID National and was phased out a few years ago. The ASID OC Leadership sees great value in the concept and when they decided to resurrect it on a chapter level the membership welcomed the program back with open arms. Several OC Design Professionals and Industry Partners signed up to host students for the day and were paired with eager students from local design schools. Designers and students were encouraged to engage in a real world day of design and to ask all of the burning questions that only this type of opportunity could afford. The biggest feedback from both students and design professionals is that the program allowed students to truly understand the expectations of the design industry while the participating design professionals were able to inquire and better understand the expectations of students emerging into the interior design community. A big thank you to all of the participating students, designers, and industry partners. Rick Campos, Allied ASID

ASID OC
Hospitality H
ospitality is more than just a friendly greeting and collecting fees for ASID monthly general chapter meetings and special events. It is a significant part of providing outstanding customer service to ASID members, industry partners, and the general public. When thinking of the benefits of being a member of the Orange County Chapter of ASID, I often think it is the obligation of the members to be hospitable and exemplify outstanding customer service through volunteerism and making other members and attendees feel welcomed and part of the wonderful organization called ASID. Each of us is responsible for making sure new members and attendees are introduced and recognized at each general meeting and sponsored event. These gestures not only represent our dedication to the organization and the design industry as a whole, but provide us experience in providing outstanding customer service. Design clients refer us and other service providers based on relationships and memories of receiving excellent customer service. We cannot forget that we are service providers in an industry where our competitive advantage is no longer our talent; it is the level of customer service we provide. Customer service is our only competitive advantage to the internet and to the DIYers.
J
ust think of how you feel when someone remembers your name or a something you once shared with them in a previous meeting or discussion. Didn’t it make you feel appreciated and respected? It is even more meaningful when you are referred to a new client based on not only the quality of the service you provided (your talent), but because of the great relationship you have built due to your high level of customer service. Being successful in service based industries like Interior Design, requires effective networking and building relationships. Volunteering on ASID-OC Committees and connecting with other members and attendees is a sure fire way of building relationships and providing outstanding customer service, which leads to increase in clients and success overall. Introduce yourself to at least 5 new people at each ASID-OC general meeting or event and find a connection with at least 2 people. Work on building a relationship with those you have a connection and track your progress in providing excellent customer service. It is all about hospitality, whether you like it or not!
