Where and when did you start out as a makeup artist/hair stylist? I have always loved hair and makeup. As a child I used to joyfully to sit near the bathroom door as my mother got herself ready for the day. I’d be wowed as she put hot rollers in her hair and applied her makeup. The beauty process and the final result was so inspiring to me that an appreciation for the drama of a good reveal was set into my heart. As a teen I started asking my older sister if I could take control of her curling iron. I would meticulously take tiny sections of hair with a 1/2 inch curler and give her an incredible 80’s big haired look. I would say that my youthful experiences with my family prepared me for my future to become a hairstylist and makeup artist. Professionally I didn’t attend cosmetology school until I was 25. What was your first paid gig? My first paid gig was for the makeup brand “Benefit Cosmetics. It was a big beauty campaign featuring all of their best selling products at the time. I remember being completely nervous, my hands shock as I questioned if I was good enough for the job. With some unsteady hands and an attitude of “fake it till you make it” I finished the two day shoot. The campaign was a success and the company hired me again. I think that being nervous and scared but creating beautiful work (that still stands up to today) helped to boost my confidence and really set the tone for my career.

PRESTON NESBIT

STYLIST - INTERVIEW

Did you know your entire life that you were destined to become such a great artist and working with models? I always knew that I wanted to do hair, I think this goes back to the first question. As for one day being able to work on models, no way. Growing up it never occurred to me that as I would flip through my favorite fashion magazines that someone actually got paid to do hair and makeup on the models. It wasn’t until I went to cosmetology school and was taught by a wonderful teacher, Debra Dietrch, that my eyes were opened to a world where you weren’t stuck behind a salon chair as a hairstylist all day. What keeps you motivated? The love for what I do as a hair and makeup artist is what really keeps me motivated, I really just want to continue to create and push myself in different directions. It thrills me to see the transformations you can make from one mode’ls blank canvas to another — it’s magic. Do you have someone that inspired you in this career? If so, who and why? I would credit my inspirations for this career to two people; my mother and Kevyn Aucoin. My mother because of her love for the craft of beauty. She is a women who never leaves the house without doing her hair and putting on her face. Before starting my professional career and going to cosmetology school I would spend hours studying the pages of Kevyn’s books: “Making Faces”, “Face Forward” and “The Art of Makeup.” I was, and is, completely in awe of his talent. Those books really helped drive me to pursue my dreams. When you have an idea for a look, do you have a hand in selecting the model for the photoshoot? My favorite looks are usually the last one I did for a photoshoot. The look for this editorial spread was a concept my friend Rachel, the stylist for the photoshoot, came up with. She and I designed the entire photoshoot, from the set to the lighting. It’s amazing to see your brainchild come to life. For this editorial story I really love the monochromatic hair and makeup I created, which pops nicely against 20 | Surreal Mag

the blue set and blue wardrobe. The transformation in this shoot with the model Aliya, from a curly haired brunette, to a long straight fringed redhead, to a redheaded afro, came out better than I imagined. I really enjoy shopping for a new looks, I love using new exciting products or colors I haven’t used before. In this shoot I used two new colors from “Fenty Beauty”; “Mattemoiselle Lip Line in Shawty” and “Freckled Fiesta.” I love these lipsticks because they don’t make your lips feel dry and cracked. The color provides lots of bang for your buck and they are long lasting. The beautiful sparkle eye makeup is a new product by “Hourglass” called “Scattered Light Glitter Eyeshadow in Copper.” This product is amazing. It’s designed to provide a girl with the glitter she desires while making sure the glitter doesn’t spread down her face as the day/night goes on. The eyeshadow really does set on your eyes and it doesn’t move. I highly recommend it to a girl (or guy) who likes lot of sparkle. Do you have any words of wisdom for Artists just starting out? I would tell new artists that you should never give up. I was told no by all five major hair and makeup artist agencies in San Francisco when I first started out. I was told my portfolio was too fashion forward for the San Francisco Bay Area. I then began to start over by working for free on test shoots and small local jobs to build my portfolio again. After a few years I finally got my break and was signed with “Ford Artist” agency. The best advice I can give is to be sure to listen to constructive criticism, make the modifications to your work needed to help further your career while remaining true to yourself and your creative spirit, and never stop dreaming. Your favorite thing to do on a day off. On my days off I love being with my four year old daughter. I make sure she always has perfect hair and is dressed immaculately. She’s like my living doll and we always have a blast hanging out together. She’s also developed a love for beauty products, hitting up the hair and makeup store is one of her favorite things to do. How did you first get interested in Modeling? I have always had an interest in modeling ever since I was a little girl. I used to watch Australia’s and America’s Next Top Model and be in awe of the beautiful girls on there. I actually never really thought that I would become a model or ever pursue my childhood dream. I didn’t ever think that I was good enough or could ever be like the girls you see in the spread of a magazine or on the TV screens. But someone saw something in me and took a chance on me. This chance given to me I have never forgotten and haven’t regretted one thing so far! What was your big break? I have never considered one job as my big break; because every opportunity I have been given I have seen and taken as a new and a once in a lifetime opportunity. By looking at things this way I feel I have a much better mentality as to taking jobs as they come. What is the best part of the job as a model? Have you met creative’s who are now called your best friends? The best part about being a model is all the amazing people and opportunities presented to you along the way. Since I first started back in 2015 I was amazed at the effort and work that went into a photo shoot or runway job that most people don’t get to see. My favorite part about my job is how the images really come to life. The lighting, the camera work,

ZOE CREED COVER MODEL - INTERVIEW the makeup artists, to the people who provide you with food. All of these people come together to create something magical and that is what is truly amazing about my job. I can certainly say that I have met some amazingly talented people along the way, and that now I can call them friends. This industry has such a terrible stereotype, but until you actually meet these people, you wont realize how wonderful they are. What would be the perfect model opportunity/job for you? The perfect/ideal model opportunity for me would have to be on the cover of Vogue Magazine. Whilst I may have a long way to go, it can’t hurt to dream right? Who inspires you? It might sound cliché but honestly my family and friends inspire me the most. My mum and dad never chased fame or fortune they are simply happy with what they have and so am I. I have a beautiful family that loves me and that’s all I could ever ask for. What is the best piece of advice you ever got? I honestly believe that the best piece of advice anyone can give you is to ‘have a crack!’ and to take every opportunity as it comes. People make mistakes in life, I know I have in my short 17 years so far. But that’s ok because we are human and we are here to learn and grow. When are you happiest? I may have a love for fashion and like the finer and pretty things, but I am the biggest tomboy that you will meet. I am much happier when I am outside and would rather go climb a tree or fishing than go shopping for a day! I love to draw and create. Colours and different textures excite me and when I am creating or doing art I am in my element and happy place. 44 | Surreal Mag

I am also at my happiest with my best friends because I believe that sharing moments with people that you love is the ultimate happiness. Who would you like to work with most? This can be a Photographer or Designer. Tell us a bit why? The person I would like to work with the most is Russell James. He is a New York Photographer who ever since entering the world of Modeling I have admired for his creativity and ability to create such beautiful images. Who living or dead would you love to be able to have dinner with? And why? I would love to have dinner with Turia Pitt. She is an Australian Athlete who was caught in 2011 in a grassfire and suffered burns to 65% of her body. After undergoing surgery numerous times to try to save her life, she has since then inspired others and I around the world with her amazing story and mindset, to never let anything stop you. She has also had a child, which is a miracle, and will always be a role model of mine. What are your 3 favorite songs at the moment and why? I am completely obsessed with Dean Lewis’s new song “Be Alright”, it is just so relatable and true. I have always loved “Fast Car” by Tracey Chapman. I just love her voice and the way she sings has such emotion. Another favorite song of mine is “Mr Brightside” by The Killers. It is just such a feel good song and always my go to whenever I am in a sad mood.

Where and when did you start as a photographer? I started taking photographs about 8 years ago, took a more serious interest in photorating and made it my profession 4 years ago. What was your first paid shoot? The first paid shooting was for a small cafe, in a small town in Siberia What is the Industry like in Russia? How easy is it to find models? Photo industry in Russia opens up to develop, in large cities, where there is access to various locations, studios, there is a way to rent equipment. In smaller cities, things are a bit more complicated. a very small selection of specialists, a small selection of models, all move to big cities. What role did your upbringing and education play leading up to you becoming a photographer? In Russia, the photography school is very poorly developed, especially for beauty and fashion photography, so all my education as a photographer has turned to video lessons on the Internet and watching a video of backstage from various foreign photoshoots. What keeps you motivated? I want to convey to people my vision of beauty and its facets in this or that image.

PHOTOGRAPHER - INTERVIEW

Can you tell us a bit about the concept behind this particular shoot with Kamilla? We have already known Kamilla for a long time, we had your tandem, initially the shooting was planned in an open air, but choosing the clothes for filming we got acquainted with the designer of Elena Zemtsova and her works, her design shifted the accents of the upcoming shooting, and the image of the Cyber Queen slowly began to appear. Do you have a favorite designer and why? There are no special preferences. There are different tasks on the set and give preference to someone else, it is problematic. of the designers whose works I have been inspired recently can be labeled Nikita Legenda, EzbyEz, and designer of headdresses Djuma. When you have an idea for a shoot, how do you select the model? I look at the portfolio of models, I can imagine whether the model will convey the image that has already formed in my head Is there a favorite shoot to date that you have done? If so, tell us a bit about why. I spent my favorite shooting in Sochi in an abandoned, but very beautiful sanatorium. Initially, the shooting was planned for the Russian singer, but she broke the nogui and could not take part. I went for a long time in the location for this shooting and was very inspired by the majestic Soviet architecture, captured by nature. So I decided to take a photo anyway. To do this, I urgently needed to find a model. Overnight, with the help of social. I found a beautiful model - Anastasia Rukhlov. Look collected at the location and coordinated work of the whole team: model, make-up artist, assistant allowed to hold a beautiful photo. 64 | Surreal Mag

Do you have any words of wisdom for Photographers just starting out? To do something inspiring to one person is difficult. It's much easier when you have a team of like-minded people. My advice to beginning photographers: do not hesitate to write to different specialists, gather your team with which you will be pleased to work and grow as a master. Your favorite thing to do on a day off. Play a lot of music, walk in new places, and in this look for inspiration
