Community Sport – Why Play It? By Georgia Wright

As a sport-lover and a writer for Echo News, I thought to myself, why not fuse my enjoyment for both hobbies together for this month’s article? For as long as I can remember, sport has always been a big part of my life. From carving up the dance floor at AMMA School of Dance as a child, to finding my strength at Moon Lee Tae Kwon Do, to calling myself an Arana Hills Netball Club player, I have never gone a period of time without sport—and I don’t plan to, either! According to research, children who dabble in sports are eight times more likely to grow up to be healthy, productive adults with stronger leadership and communication skills. Even the academic performance and mental health of young ones are evidenced to improve, along with their social abilities. But I’m sure none of these facts comes as a surprise to you. The countless benefits of participating in regular physical activity are known far and wide by all. However, the bottom line is—kids need exercise. And lucky for all the rising pocket rockets in our community, The Hills District has a marvellous array of sporting clubs on offer. With 2020 finally coming to a close, another year of opportunities and open doors lies ahead of us. For the youth in our district, the New Year Resolution of ‘getting fitter, happier and healthier’ can easily be made into a reality. They could look toward netball, gymnastics, touch football, hockey, martial arts or even the synchronised swimming lessons offered at for their dose of fun, physical activity. Dozens of sign-on days and try-outs are right around the corner, so make sure to stay informed about these dates for sporting clubs that interest your child! ___ Personally, I’ll be forever glad WHEN YOUR MENTION THIS ADVERT that I started up sport from a young age, and even gladder that I found my love for netball. ___ Some of my highest highs have been felt on the netball court, and over the years it really brought me out of my shell. So, community sport – that’s why your child should play it.

Gymnastics is a great foundation program for all sports as it develops fine and gross motor skills, strength, coordination and balance, whilst also allowing children to socialize in a fun, engaging environment. Mitchelton Youth Club (MYC) runs a number of gymnastics programs for children of all ages, however their Kindergym program is helpful for children before they go to school. Kindergym is a physical and social development program for children aged approx. 2-5 yrs. based on gymnastics skills and apparatus. This unique program is built around your child’s coordination and development, but also builds self-esteem, as they have full control over their body movement. As with all the gymnastics programs that take place at MYC, the Kindergym program is taught by accredited coaches and is fully affiliated with Gymnastics Queensland and Gymnastics Australia. You can be fully assured that this club knows what they are doing when it comes to gymnastics. Having been established in 1941, this not-for-profit organisation has been proudly supporting the community through sporting & physical activity. Nonetheless, although the club is steeped in history, Lauren Maidens, Club Manager of MYC tells us they are truly equipped for the 21st century. ‘Since the club was established almost 80 years ago it has gone through many transformations in its time. We now offer modern facilities, world class coaches along with a userfriendly customer portal where clients can easily book into program sessions,’ explains Lauren. If you are looking for an opportunity to try out the Kindergym program, MYC is hosting a ‘Kindergym Activation Day’ on the 21st January. There will be a ‘Kinder class’ for ages 2-3yrs from 9am – 10am and another ‘Pre-school/Prep class’ for children ages 4-6yrs from 10am–11am. These classes are completely free (*terms and conditions apply) and a cute little Gymnastics Queensland t-shirt is offered with each child’s registration. You can reserve your spot via the customer portal at https://app.iclasspro.com/portal/mitchie or alternatively call or email the club on manager@mitcheltonyouthclub. org.au or call 3355 7900. * KinderGym Activation Day Terms and conditions: Local residents only. Learn To Play Tennis Like A Pro

Southern Cross Tennis is a multi award winning coaching team at the Samford Tennis club. With tennis available for all ages and skill levels it's not hard to see why they have won several awards. Students representing their region, state and country, as well as professional players are byproducts of their elite programs.

Children's lessons start as young as three years old, where kids begin in blue hotshots. As the children progress through the levels and advance their skills, they are given more opportunities to participate in fixtures and various Australian competitions. The adult fixtures program runs Monday to Thursday nights from 7pm at the Samford Tennis Club and even attracts past US college tennis players! Players of all levels are welcome and graded to the appropriate fixtures evening to suit their ability. Southern Cross Tennis coaches are all Tennis Australia qualified and contract their coaching services to the school of excellence at Kelvin Grove. It's not hard to see why this tennis club has been given the green light for two additional courts to increase the number of participants. Come along to the open day on Sunday 31st January to find out more about this one of a kind opportunity to play tennis with the best. for more information visit https://southerncrosstennis. com.au

Developmental Benefits of Tennis For Kids

Bone Strength: Playing tennis regularly strengthens the bones of young players and has been proven to help prevent osteoporosis later on in life. Hand-Eye Coordination Kids who play tennis learn to constantly judge the timing between the approaching ball and the right point of contact, quickly accelerating their hand-eye coordination even when other activities and sports might have failed to do so. Aerobic and Cardiovascular Exercise Tennis gets kids moving! Without even realizing it, they’ll be running around for a good hour straight while maintaining a high energy level. That’s great for strengthening their heart, and also helping them (and by extension their parents!) get a good night’s rest. Agility During a single point kids may change direction as many as 5 times in 10 seconds!

Let your kids dance their way to good health

There are many reasons parents choose to enrol their children in dance classes—for the health benefits, to expand their creativity, or simply because they love the art of dance. Dance classes can teach a child self-confidence, self-discipline, poise, and grace. But most importantly, dance is fun! A locally owned and operated dance school, Madonna’s has been delivering children’s dance classes since 1991 and has seen the development of skills and confidence in hundreds of their students over the years. ‘Dancing is so much fun for kids. It allows them to stay active in a fun and exciting way and they also develop important social and emotional skills without even realizing it,’ said Leita Gentner, Director of Madonna’s Dance School. ’Over the years I have seen kids forge lifelong friendships through dance, and grow as individuals within our studio’s.’ So, if you’re looking to increase your child’s self-esteem, improve their social skills, and help them develop great habits for life, why not enrol them in a dance class at Madonna’s today? The studio offers affordable classes from a variety of genres for children aged 2.5years to seniors. In addition, all classes are taught by experienced and qualified teachers in air-conditioned studio’s at Arana Hills. For more info, call Leita on 0401 498 800 or visit their fully equipped centre at 1156 South Pine Road, Arana Hills.

Hockey Season 2020 – Different / Good

Although the pandemic created great disruption for the whole community, including sport, the support that came from all levels and areas of government for Pine Hills Hockey Club has been huge, effective and appreciated. Combined with background work done by volunteers, ongoing field maintenance carried out by council, funding for sanitisation supplies from the Qld Government and policy direction from the Hockey Associations, the club remained strong, viable, adaptable and safe. Members remained faithful in the knowledge that they would return to play the game they love following whatever guidelines necessary. What a joyous return, and the season was truly – different , but good! When training finally resumed and play got under way the club almost did not need lights – the bright shiny happy faces of our players practically lit up the field! However, there was another surprise waiting… Pine Hills Hockey Club successfully gained the sum of $50k, through the Moreton Bay Regional Council COVID-19 Community Infrastrucure Revitalisation Grant. This allowed completion of the upgrading of field lights from halogen to LED and for the installation of a remote arming station (eSwitch). Because of this grant, members will benefit from top quality lighting and more efficient power usage that will lower electricity costs and also allow for easier, safer access for volunteers when turning on/off the lights for many years to come.

Rise to the Challenge with Phoenix Netball

Last year was a year like no other, where we all learned to pivot and netball distancing rules entered into our everyday lives. Keeping 1.5 metres apart and ‘no contact’ became normal off court.

However, Phoenix Netball Club adjusted to the situation and feel fortunate to have still participated in a season of club Netball at Downey Park. Hands and equipment were thoroughly sanitized, training schedules modified and game times altered. It was also a year when the club turned 10! This year, Phoenix Netball will extend their 10th birthday celebrations into 2021. They look forward to a new season catching up with returning players, coaches, families and welcoming new members to their wonderful club. It is in this spirit that they invite members of the community to join them! Phoenix Netball trains during the week at Tramway Street, Ferny Grove and plays Saturdays at Downey Park Netball Association, Windsor. They welcome all players 7.5 years or older (born after 30/06/2014) and support the development of their youngest players (7.5 – 10 years) in the NetSetGo (modified rules) competition and competitive competition from 11 years – Opens (born 2010 or earlier). Registrations open online mid January and an information and uniform night will be held on Thursday 28th January 5pm – 7pm at their courts. Trials for our competitive age group (11 years – Opens, born 2010 or earlier) will be held Saturday 30th January and Saturday 6th February at our courts. For more information visit www.phoenixnetball.org.au, contact registrar@phoenixnetball.org.au or follow them on Facebook or Instagram @phoenixfernygrove

Gearing up for a bright 2021

Brisbane Academy of Dance is excited to open its doors for 2021 on Saturday 23rd January.

2020 was a year like no other, having to shut our doors, transform to a fully online training intuition within a day, and then learning to convert our normal way of dance into the new life that COVID 19 has given our community. As a studio we were incredibly grateful and proud of all the support and new triumphs our students were able to achieve during this time. Without this, we would have not be able to continue doing what we love as dance teachers and as a dance studio. We look forward to a bright and promising 2021. Instilling passion for dance and improving technique whilst having fun is important to Brisbane Academy of Dance. We work to provide a positive environment to grow and develop and we focus on instilling self- expression, discipline, and the hunger for dance. We welcome all members of the community to come and see our big state-of-the-art studios and join in the taster classes on our Open Day on the 23rd January from 10am - 2pm.
