News From The Den
By the Golden Valley Keperra Lions
Lions Clubs are Community Service Clubs – you have probably seen us cooking Sausages, Dagwood Dogs, Hot Chips, Christmas Cakes and Donuts around Keperra, Ferny Grove and the Hills District.
Every dollar raised from the community goes back to the community (because Lions Members pay their administration costs personally). The last two months have seen some major events that required our funding: • We had Fires and Floods in Queensland devastating the lives and property of Queenslanders – your Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club donated the $3,000 proceeds of our January and February fundraising to the appeal with Lions Clubs nationally donating in excess of $300,000. • We became aware of a local family - John and Anna Williams and their two sons Oscar and Hugo who were in desperate need of a mobility scooter for Oscar which allows him to safely move around Patricks Road State School. Oscar’s old scooter was beyond repair. Golden Valley Keperra have committed their March fundraising to the ‘Williams Brother Wish Inc.’ which included the purchase of a new scooter shown in the picture to the left. That cheque fully funded the purchase – enjoy Oscar from all your friends at GVK Lions. We are always looking for new members here at the GVK Lions club. If you are interested in becoming a member please contact Paul Ryan on 0409 688 675 for further information. John, Anna, Oscar and Hugo being presented with a cheque from Ian Patterson of Golden Valley Keperra Lions.

radio station, where Ethel Taylor is Queen of the radio waves where she bumbles her way through her program ‘Community Diary.’ Ethel’s old War-time songs don’t appeal to Kim and Tony who are banding together to oust her so they can present more of their 80’s tribute show and techno music segments. But do they really know who they are up against? The final play ‘Ineligible Batchelor’ is a comedy taking a behind the scenes look at the not so perfect world of reality TV and the quest for love. TV Producer Grace Walsh was not expecting the likes of Mick McGuire to turn up in her office hoping to be the next single man looking to find true love in front of an audience of millions. Will he make the cut? ‘Time Will Tell’ will open at St Matthews Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton, on Friday 3rd May and continue Saturday 4th, Friday 10th and Saturday 11th. The Hills Players have been busy rehearsing for our first production for 2019, ‘Time Will Tell’ that comprises of three one act plays: ‘The Pram’ and ‘Ineligible Batchelor’ both by Brisbane writer Hugh O’Brien and ‘Sure FM’ by Michael Jeffery. ‘The Pram’ is a drama set over a century and five generations, commencing in 1919 and ending in 2019. Could a vintage pram hold the key to the mysteries of the past and the true connection between today’s generation and those living 100 years ago? There has been an increase in tax scamming phone calls and emails in the past few weeks, and it shows no sign of slowing. The scammers are becoming more difficult to identity and are even redirecting their overseas phones through local numbers. The best defence against scammers is to understand that: • The ATO would NEVER issue a warrant for your arrest • The ATO would NEVER ask for payment over the phone. • The ATO would NEVER ask for iTunes vouchers - or similar - as payment. Even if the caller claims to have spoken to your tax agent; never give your details over the phone, hang up and call your tax agent directly and ask them if you do have a debt. So what other precautions can you take to avoid being scammed? Please search in Google for: ATO 'Verify or report a scam' page on the ATO website and read through; don’t forget to share this page with your family / friends. Yes, scams are so frequent that the ATO has a team dedicated to deal with them! If someone calls and claim that you have a tax debt, hang up; it’s a scam. Call the ATO immediately if you have any doubts on 1800 008 540 (ATO impersonation scam hotline.) Call this number if you think you may have fallen victim to an ATO impersonation scam.

A comprehensive guide to educational facilities within The Hills Districts and Surrounds.
High Performance at Mount Alvernia As a modern Catholic college, academics form our core business, but as one dimension in what comprises a holistic approach to education, and one aspect that may inform high performance. High performance is found in the rich experiences, relationships, and practices that encompass the day-today life of an educational institution. It is these elements, that are not easily measurable, that give Mount Alvernia College its unique character. Mt A embraces its unique character through knowing its vision and purpose in enabling our young women to flourish and succeed. Our academic faculty and support staff understand that, as a Franciscan institution grounded in Christ, we place relationship at our core. We work to provide a safe educational environment where all within our community are provisioned with the opportunity to learn, connect, and ultimately thrive - an environment where students and staff work in collaboration to develop their curiosity, a passion for learning, and the ability to think. It is through deliberate pedagogical practices and experiences that our young women reach their potential and excel. How do we know we have been successful in our pursuits? Our Mount Alvernia graduates are strong,

confident, independent, young women who embark on their desired pathways and make a positive contribution to society - evidence that the College is meeting its targets of high performance. Daniel Crump Deputy Principal

Everyone Belongs at Creative Play in Ferny Grove
Ashton and Callum tending to Jennie’s wounds!
We celebrated Harmony Week at Creative Play Child Care Centre by coming together with friends, families and the wider community. The children participated in a number of multicultural activities, with the phrase “We are One” in mind. It was a great way to acknowledge the diversity in our Centre and to show to the children that everyone belongs. We were further able to explore our Indigenous culture with an interactive didgeridoo show from Jason Morris, which the children and staff thoroughly enjoyed. Another highlight of the children’s learning has been a visit from our local paramedics. One of our families welcomed a new addition to their family before Christmas. Not long after, it was found that their lovely boy, Lucas, had a rare medical condition which will require ongoing care and the possibility of visits from the paramedics. The paramedics were able to educate the children through a very hands-on experience. The children explored the inside of the ambulance and were able to touch and use the equipment. The paramedics spoke to the children about calling 000 and what to say if there is ever an emergency. LI VAC MITED ANC IES

Celebrating 15 years in Ashgrove
Helen, Jayne and Des at Cartridge World Ashgrove
Cartridge World Ashgrove first opened its doors in 2003 and has been helping the local community and business to save on their printing costs ever since.
Owned by Jim and Helen Graham, their service extends to customers throughout the western suburbs and the city. The Ashgrove team, Helen, Des and Jayne, would like to thank you for all your custom over the last fifteen years. It has been a pleasure to serve you. Fifteen years ago, the printing landscape was vastly different. There were two or three main players, who produced a limited number of printers/photocopiers, and the same cartridges were used in multiple machines. The remanufacturing industry was in its infancy in Australia and Cartridge World, through innovation and Research & Development has since grown to be a world leader in this field. More importantly Cartridge World provided a high street presence, which enabled the domestic and small/SOHO business user to avail themselves of

the savings that had previously been exclusive to government and large corporates. Fast forward to the present. At Cartridge World Ashgrove we have evolved to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing environment. Consider us as More than just a Cartridge Store. In keeping with our roots we still refill ink cartridges in store, and also stock an extensive range of quality Cartridge World Brand ink and laser cartridges, as well as the original OEM brands. We supply copy and specialty paper, stationery items, labelling machines and labels, and have an in-house copying, printing, scanning, binding and laminating service. We can organise flyers, business cards, banners and more. We sell printers and multifunction centres (for both the domestic and business market) and can offer managed print services and tailored solutions for business. Please come and talk to us or visit us online at cartridgeworld.com.au. Cartridge World Ashgrove has been a proud sponsor to many local businesses, schools and community organizations. In 2018, Cartridge World Ashgrove was delighted and honoured to receive Rotary’s Vocational Excellence Award from the Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap – acknowledging vocational excellence, ethical business practices and services to the community. In recognition of their fifteen year milestone and the support of their many loyal customers they are giving away a number of prizes in store during April, culminating in the grand draw on Tuesday 30th April, to win a Brother A3 Colour Multifunction Printer as the main prize. In keeping with the 15 years celebratory theme – every $15 spent in store in April will give you an entry into the draw (*max. 5 entries per transaction). We look forward to seeing you in store to enjoy the celebrations.

Get Good Results with Mulch James Herbst from Rocky Point Mulching is the guest speaker on 2nd May at the Mitchelton Garden Club meeting at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, at the junction of Trundle and Wardell Streets, Enoggera. He will talk about mulches, soil conditioners and plant nutrients - everything to help the gardener attain good results. The use of mulch is very important, it helps to retain moisture in the soil, retards weed growth and protects the ground from extreme temperatures. In recent years lucerne mulch was introduced and this is popular. James will have samples of different products to show the audience. The vision of Rocky Point Mulching is to create a healthy way of life, and that company is passionate about partnering gardeners with quality products to grow fresh healthy food and to beautify this world for generations to come. Their products include all types of mulches, potting mix, growing media, sand, animal bedding and terra firma fertilizers, etc. April is the month to plant spring flowering bulbs. Pay particular attention to placing the bulbs at the correct depth in the soil. If you plant ranunculi corms in small individual pots or punnets, they can be given special care until the leaves appear and you will be sure there are not spaces left in your display as you'll be able to put them in the garden where you want them. It's important to use mulch in between any new seedlings that are planted, and to give them shade until they become acclimatized. Keep a check on your citrus trees for gall wasp and citrus leaf miner. For these, prune away the affected areas and put it in a bag for the rubbish bin. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month except January. There are vacancies for new members. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair. For more information, please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256.

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, I am at my wits’ end as to how I can salvage my relationship with my two teenage children - Sam, who is 14, and Laura, who is 16. I split with my wife five years ago and remarried three years ago. My present wife Jane has one child aged ten, who lives with us on alternate weeks. Things had been reasonable between myself and my children until 18 months ago when they started refusing to come on their designated weekends and overnight stays. My ex-wife would not back me up and insist that they come. She said it was their choice and she wasn’t going to make them come. She has also remarried and there are her new partner’s children also involved in this mix. What I have found devastating is that I just cannot reach my children. I text them, try to ring them, organise pick-ups for the weekend, but they rarely answer or don’t want to engage in conversation with me. I ask them about coming over and they always have excuses as to why they can‘t. It has been three months since I have seen them. It is tearing me apart and putting a lot of strain on my relationship with Jane. I don’t want to give up on them but they seem to want to have no contact with me. The break-up with my ex was pretty acrimonious and I am sure she is actively criticising me and painting me as a bad guy. But she is the one that left me for this other guy. So I feel her criticism is pretty unfair. I didn’t break the family and now I feel she has taken the kids away from me. What can I do to get my kids back if they don’t want to have anything to do with me? Brian. Dear Brian, What you have gone and are going through is devastating. What I would be focussing on is the future of your relationship with your children and your relationship with Jane. Even if you know for sure that your ex-wife is openly criticising you to your children there is nothing you can do about it. Your behaviour towards them, and understanding of what they have had to deal with and where they are in terms of ther adolescent lives, and what is important to them, is paramount. As hard as this may be, work on getting out of your pain at the loss and grief you feel about your relationship with them, and try to understand it from their perspective. Their lives have been turned upside down. They have had to deal with whole new sets of different and often difficult new emotional relationships and interactions, e.g. new sets of parenting styles, expectations, step-sibling relationships, rivalries and politics at a time whey they are most vulnerable: the break-up
of their family unit. If this isn’t enough they are also having to negotiate these difficult teenage years as they emerge into their adult identities. Go back in your mind to their ages: What was important to YOU then? What would be important to them now? For them, as for us, it‘s still about fitting in. Being a successful or acceptable part of their peer group, and what that means in their and the group’s terms that they want to belong to. Parents are there. They are important. But our relationship with them often takes a back seat in this phase. On weekends they want to be with their friends doing their stuff. This can be very challenging when they have to swap between homes. This, not you, could well be the major part of their reticence. You do not know what has been said about you, or how divided their loyalties have become under the circumstances. If this is so it is not easy for them, and the struggle involved in doing this is often expressed in withdrawal. Your efforts to show you care and love through continued attempts at contact is admirable and it’s important that you have shown them this. However, if you are finding the hurt that this continued rejection of your overtures ignites too much for you or your new relationship to handle, it’s time to take a different tack. I would suggest writing a letter rather than a discussion with them. A letter gives them time to reflect on what you have said and there is less chance for either side to go into judgment or blame. Stating the obvious, that you love them, you want a good relationship with them, that you are always there and always will be there for them, is important. Saying that you have found it hurtful that they have not wanted contact is important because they need to know how you feel. It would also be good to say that if they are finding this contact with you difficult for them at this stage, because of their activities, social life, needs etc., or because it may be making the home situation difficult for them, and although it is difficult for you also, you understand and accept this. Do not go into your idea of the possibilities of why their home life may make it difficult or challenging. Just make that statement. I would finish by saying that you are willing to leave future contact up to them, and will always be available for them when they do. This is the first fourteen years of a life-time relationship with them. There are many years left to build a successful one. Continue to remember and send birthday, Christmas presents etc, or money if they prefer. Turn out to school events etc, so your continued love, care and acceptance can be seen. Be aware of the thoughts that can send you down into a spiral of despair. Blame, judgment and thoughts about how unfair it is will do that, and it won’t help you in any way. Focus on what you can do, the enjoyment and success you can achieve in what you have in your life now. Robin.

Dickson News
from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON
Car Parking at Ferny Grove Station
I have delivered $11 million in funding for 350 new car parks at Ferny Grove train station. These car parks are in addition to, and not instead of, any car parking part of the TOD development planned for Ferny Grove train station. The lack of car parks at Ferny Grove has been an issue right from the start and unfortunately it looks like the Labor State Government is going to see history repeat itself with the new development. Not enough carparks and people will still need to park in suburban streets, rather than in the park and ride. This is frustrating for both commuters and local residents. I want to see adequate car parking built on the site specifically for commuters, that’s why I’ve fought hard to get the funding for additional 350 spaces from the federal government. We now need the State Government to deliver the project.
The Samford Community Hub
I am pleased to let you know I have secured $2.25M in federal funding through the Building Better Regions Fund to build the Samford Community Hub at the old CSIRO site. This will be a joint project with the Moreton Bay Regional Council who will fund the other half of the $4.5M needed to build the new hub. The new hub will act as a home for local organisations such as Meals on Wheels Pine Rivers, the Samford Support Network and more. It will also feature a substantial environmental aspect focusing on sustainability and encouraging locals to protect our wildlife.
Federal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this project over the years including the Samford Support Network, the RSL, Meals on Wheels Pine Rivers, the Samford Community Library, Councillor Darren Grimwade and former Councillor Bob Millar and the many others who have been involved. It is great that we will finally be able to transform this into a first-class facility for our entire community to enjoy.

Bob Cassimaty Park Upgrade- Lord Mayor Budget Deliverable
I am pleased to announce that work will commence in early April at Bob Cassimaty Park to install a MUGA (Multi Use Games Arena). The multi-use court features line markings for five-a-side soccer, basketball and incorporates hoops and small soccer goals. As part of Lord Mayor Graham Quirk’s 2016 election commitment to an active lifestyle an outdoor gym will also be installed into the park. This installation features a combination of strength and cardio exercises as well as an obstacle course designed to be done quickly and help build physical and mental skills that can be translated in everyday situations. The gym also caters for novice exercisers and offers an inclusive space for all abilities to have a place that is useful and selfinstructional. Maintenance work has also been programmed around the skate bowl including the removal of ‘end of life’ totem poles. If you would like to discuss this project with me, please do not hesitate to contact the ward office.

freedom of our society is based on a delicate tradition of mutual respect and tolerance for a wide variety of viewpoints, cultures, faiths and personalities. It was important for Tim and I to stand together in a show of bipartisan support for that tradition of tolerance and state clearly that violence in any form cannot be accepted in our society.
Affordable Housing Project
It was my great honour to present certificates to this year’s school leaders at Mitchelton Special School.
Vigil for our New Zealand Cousins
In response to community requests led by Mt Maria College the State Member for Everton Tim Mander MP and I co-hosted a public vigil and community service against violence in any form at Teralba Park on 22 March. The vigil was well attended by locals with words of support offered for the victims and their families who themselves had fled the violence of their former lives to seek peace in New Zealand. The terrible tragedy in Christchurch is a reminder that the great

I was delighted last month to open a new affordable housing block in Enoggera which was designed to support people with a disability live independently as their parents age and find it difficult to provide them ongoing care. The service was constructed to ‘gold’ community standards and is an outstanding example of what Palaszczuk Government is able to achieve when working in partnerships with nongovernment organisations such as Brisbane Housing Company which specialises in transitional housing builds. Moving into independent living can be challenging and, by incorporating elements such as a common room and barbeque area, the Enoggera development will give residents opportunities to interact and form important social networks and support.
