Council and Rangers celebrate $1.73M clubhouse goal
Moreton Bay Regional Council and local footy giants Samford Rangers FC have celebrated the completion of soccer’s newest home in the valley, the $1.73 million Samford Parklands football clubhouse. The clubhouse is located at 2149 Mt Samson Road, Samford Valley.
Moreton Bay Regional Council Division 11 Councillor Darren Grimwade said on Saturday, March 18, council and Samford Rangers FC club members officially opened the new 500m2 clubhouse with a special community celebration during round The new Samford Parklands football clubhouse one of the club’s junior competition. The clubhouse includes a 150m2 club room, fully-serviced kitchen and bar, four change rooms, bathrooms and storage facilities which will cater for the Rangers 680 members and 56 teams. Flood Resilient Bridge For Draper
Moreton Bay Regional Council will construct a new $5 million bridge over the South Pine River at Draper to provide better access and flood immunity for motorists and residents in the local area.
An 80m-long, three-span bridge would be built east of Heather Anne Drive, Draper and replace an existing one-way, lowlevel bridge. ‘This project will provide a more accessible, flood-resilient road bridge for motorists who know all too well the 6km detour they currently have to take each time the existing bridge is flooded,’ Cr Constance said The 10m-wide structure will be built at a higher level to minimise the impact of severe weather events and swelling of the South Pine River, and will feature two-lane access and 480m of associated new roads. As part of the project, fauna crossing infrastructure will also be installed underneath the bridge to provide safe passage for animals moving between the local environment. Construction is expected to start in May and be completed by November, weather permitting.

This marks the beginning of the major $1.9 million upgrade for the popular community facility. Crews have begun to demolish 130 tonnes of concrete to make way for a new, heated indoor pool. ‘These initial works mark the first stage in an exciting project for our community, which will give local residents more opportunities to use the Ferny Hills Pool, regardless of the weather,’ Cr Constance said. Once complete, the Ferny Hills Pool upgrade will feature all-abilities facilities including in-pool ramps and accessible bathrooms as well as greater storage capacity with a new equipment room. This upgrade will allow the Ferny Hills Pool to be used for a wider range of uses including learn-to-swim and aerobic classes, plus much more. The Ferny Hills Pool upgrade is expected to be completed by late 2017, weather permitting, in time for the aquatic centre’s 35th birthday in 2018.

We believe everyday contributes to the learning journey for our community. Every child is a different kind of flower. All together they make this world, a beautiful garden.

An Alternative To Traditional Childcare
Kindy Garden Ferny Hills is an alternative to traditional childcare. Ms Megan Jackat is a mother of two with over 20 years' experience in caring for children and is leading a team of qualified Educators in her role as Centre Operator. Our unique one of a kind facility featuring a library, art studio and music/drama room together with a creatively designed and landscaped garden, sets new standards in early education. Unlike traditional centres where children are limited to only one room, at Kindy Garden, groups will at times access all of these different learning spaces and the numerous resources so there is something to enthuse and inspire every learner every day. Senior Sportsperson of the Year
Pine Hills Hockey Club finished strongly in all levels in 2016 with more than half of our teams finishing as Finalists.
Div 4 Women and Masters Men played Preliminary finals, Monday Masters made the Grand Final, DP3 Women played Preliminary Finals and finished Minor Premiers, JG2 and U11 Girls played semi-finals, and the U11 Boys became Premiers. Massive. This success is possible as the club is backed by a mighty team of volunteers with one outstanding member, Leisa Whitlock, being named as the Hills Echo Senior Sportsperson of the Year. Leisa has been with the club since 2008 as a player and Junior Coach and for many years as a Technical Official. In 2016 the Senior DP5 Pine Hills Hockey Club ladies were also thrilled to be guided by her. Senior Sportsperson of the Year 2016, Leisa Whitlock The team was hugely inspired by Leisa’s skilful direction and superior tactical knowledge with results that showed on the ladder. The club is proud to have Leisa as a member and truly appreciates all that she does and the endless hours she gives, always with a beautiful smile. Congratulations Leisa 2017 is shaping up to be another big year. Our recent successful Hook in2 Hockey Program has introduced over sixty youngsters to our wonderful game and a large proportion of them have signed on to play winter fixtures. With registrations in several age groups almost doubling, the club looks forward to registering extra teams. Two more players, each, for U9, U11 and J Division (14-17) are all that is required. If you would like to join our club please email join@ pinehillshockey.org.au or call Robyn 0407 985 991. We welcome all newcomers, no matter what age or experience.

On Thursday, 6 May, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets. Enoggera. The guest speaker is Debbie Aitcheson from The Chilli Patch at Minden. She will talk about Herbs.
In many cultures around the world, herbs form an integral part of life. From them come food, health needs and remedies, heating, dyes and fibres, etc. Their strong flavours reduce the need for the use of big amounts of salt and sugar in our diet, and most of the world’s population relies on herbs to keep healthy. It is not known if Debbie will deal with any particular aspect of herbs, but in past years when she has been guest speaker, she has covered culinary uses, preparing samples on the spot for the audience to taste, and the cultivation of herbs with soil preparation and pest control, and much more. With Debbie’s vast knowledge and expertise, an interesting meeting is assured. For those who are planning to have plenty of blooms for spring, it’s time to plant seedlings of your choice, into prepared garden beds. Here are a few suggestions - pansies, stocks, calendula, paper daisies (Helichrysum), and larkspur. Always water the seedlings with a Seasol solution at the time of planting and provide shade for them for a week or two. Spring flowering bulbs should be planted now. Usually bulbs should be planted at a depth twice their height, but there are some that like to have their neck above the ground. Check the planting instructions given when you purchase them. Bulbs planted in groups give a better display than single bulbs scattered here and there. Keep the garden beds well mulched to conserve moisture. Hibiscus should reach their peak flowering time this month. Keep a watchful eye to check for aphids and mites on the new growth and dispose of spent blooms daily to prevent the Hibiscus beetle from flourishing. Citrus trees need attention too as the citrus gall wasp will be active over the coming months. Swellings appearing on the branches should be pruned off as these contain the gall wasp eggs which hatch in August. Dispose of the ‘prunings’ by putting them in a plastic bag to go in the garbage bin. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month, commencing with morning tea at 9.45a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair.

What’s happening at Samford Valley Probus....
Thought I would take the opportunity to pass on some of the activities our Probus members and guests can look forward to in the coming months.
March is always the month when we have our annual AGM change over luncheon. After the election of the committee we will enjoy main meal alternate drop and dessert at the Arana Leagues Club. I am looking forward to Thursday 27th April excursion. It is to the Majestic Theatre Pomana. The price of $52pp includes the bus, a movie and a nice roast lunch. After a visit to the Airport for our tour 8.30am to 10am on Thursday 25th May, cost $14 pp, we will head to the Seagrill Cafe at Hamilton for lunch which will be at your cost. At our Thursday 15th June meeting we will be celebrating our 15th anniversary. A great achievement and milestone. So fifteen years of fun, camaraderie, fellowship with lots of outings and quest speakers. Last but not least we have Christmas in July on Thursday 27th at a cost of $45pp. The venue is The Fox and Hound. Our Outings Officer Lyle has been very busy organising these events. Lyle still has pen to paper arranging outings for the remainder of 2017. Thanks Lyle. Probus meets on the third Thursday of each month at Samford Bowls Club 10am. FAST TRACK TO GOOD BALANCE
- Learning about Family Tree Maker
Hills Echo May Deadline: 26th April The Hills Players Inc presents
This scenario probably sounds familiar: You’re walking along, focused on something else, when suddenly you step off an uneven surface. Before you know it, you’re off balance and headed for the ground. Did you know that if you trip, you have less than one second to catch yourself? Your body just has to act! You can train the muscles that will keep you standing. Interval training - in which you vary the pace of your workout between short high-intensity bursts and longer lower-intensity periods. This does benefit this muscle development. However, we need to challenge those muscles with activities that closely resemble every day activities, like twisting, reaching, walking, balancing on uneven surfaces and even hopping. Here are a few ways to incorporate balance training into your daily life: • Use balance exercises to warm up for things like walking, or biking. After establishing your balance on one foot, try raising and lowering your body on one leg, keeping your torso erect while flexing at the knee and hip. • One-leg balances make good stretches for post-workout as well. • At home, stand on one leg while doing dishes, brushing your teeth, fixing your hair or cooking. The Curves 30 Minute workout is interval training on a circuit. Add Balance and Stretch Body Basics classes for even better results. HURRY - $1 join offer must finish 15 April! Arana Netball Plays First Fixtures
Arana 11, 10 years old at their first game of the season
Downey Park fixtures began on Saturday 25th March, with games on the following weekend, before a break for the Easter school holidays. Next game will be on Saturday 22nd April.
Arana has fourteen teams playing this season, including four non-competitive teams playing 8 Years to 10 Years, where players have modified rules and do not play towards finals, allowing them to learn the game at this young age, before the pressure of playing for points. Arana’s ten competitive teams enjoyed mixed fortunes to start the season, with first-up wins to Open teams Arana 1 and Arana 3, Intermediate teams Arana 4 and Arana 5, and Arana 6, Cadet Div. 6. Results will vary in most grades from week to week as teams meet all the other teams in the grade. Players and coaches should also see improvement as the season progresses and girls learn to work together better. Arana Netball Committee thanks all who helped make the Club Family Fun Day early in March a successful day, and look forward to ongoing support from Club families and the community, as events are planned for the year, including both a movie night and a gala dinner to commemorate forty years of Arana Netball Club. As with all clubs, Arana Netball relies heavily on the generosity of local businesses and on the selfless efforts of volunteers. All interested are urged to attend the monthly meetings, usually on the third Monday of the month, beginning at 7.30pm. The April meeting will be at the Arana Leagues Club, but subsequent meetings will return to the Community Centre, Dawson Parade, (Leslie Patrick Park.) For any enquiries about Arana Netball, including interest in playing as both the youngest and intermediate (up to 19 years) age groups can still take more players, contact Lorraine, President, on 3882 2900 or 0432 216 407, or email the Club on arananetballclub@gmail. com. The Stomp proudly supports ‘Whiskey’s Wish’ - a not for profit organisation which provides Service dogs to veterans suffering PTSD and other service related medical conditions. ‘There are so many people in our community suffering mental illness. I believe we can provide better local mental health support to those suffering in defence communities and the broader community,’ Mr Elston said. Gaythorne RSL President, Mr Merv Brown said, ‘A career in the defence force frequently produces highly motivated people with a high degree of personal discipline and focus. Nick is a great example of this. I’ve also seen that he cares about people and continues to support others in our community.’ When asked if he thought Nick had what it took to finish the walk, Mr Brown said, ‘The STOMP is definitely not a race, it’s a social walk and we encourage walkers to look after their mates in the ANZAC spirit, but I reckon Nick’s fit enough to walk right around the country. Just have a look at him!’ Mr Elston said he would draw on his experience in providing specialist logistical assistance in the aftermath of Cyclones Larry and Yasi as well as Operation Queensland Flood Assist, apart from his service in East Timor and The Middle East, to assist people in the Ferny Grove Electorate work together for the common good.

The Hills Organic Community Garden
If you hate gyms and diets like me, get your exercise by joining The Hills Organic Community Garden at Bunya.
Look at the benefits:• Resistance training - digging holes • Weightlifting - pushing a wheelbarrrow full of soil or compost or mulch • Aerobic benefits: raking fertiliser or mulch into garden beds Every muscle in the body is used to lift, squat, carry and dig. Mowing the lawn burns around the same amount of kilojoules as a 2km run around the neighbourhood, and yes, we do have grass to mow! Another big tick for gardening is that a study found that working in the garden daily may reduce the risk of dementia by 35%. As Costa from Gardening Australia says ‘Gardening is not just about growing produce, it’s about connecting with others and sharing the rewards.’ Of course the rewards are lovely fresh, healthy veges and fruit free of pesticides and chemical fertilisers. Not able to garden any more but have any tools, equipment or any garden paraphenalia such as sheds or furniture, you want to get rid of? Don’t send them to the dump, just call us and we will gratefully receive them. by Dave Livett Roy Nestor St Clair Brown, silversmith and resident of the Shire of Enoggera, built a house in Orchid Street which is still in the family. In 1916 Roy, aged in his late thirties, embarked for the Western Front. He never came back, dying of head wounds received when Australian and Canadian troops seized the village of Passchendael in late October 1917. Roy lies in a French cemetery; his memory perpetuated on an honour board in Enoggera Memorial Hall and on a memorial tablet at St John’s Anglican Church on Wardell Street. Roy and many other men and women who sailed away to war twice during the twentieth century will be remembered at an afternoon service on Anzac Day, 25 April commencing 1.30pm. The service is open to all and all are invited to lay wreaths if they wish. The society continues to commemorate the centenary of WWI with emphasis on the year 1917. At the same time we are aware it is the 75th anniversary of the year 1942; a year that began disastrously for the Allies but as the tide of war turned in its later months, resulted in what Winston Churchill called the end of the beginning. In May EDHS will be doing what it does best; displaying its historical photos and memorabilia at Marchant Ward’s Lanham Park fair on Saturday May 6th and a week later at Hillbrook Anglican School’s ‘Sustainability Day.’ As you wander through the many attractions of these two events, stop for a chat, we welcome you. EDHS has a research room in Enoggera Memorial Hall on the corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets (refidex 139 A10), entry via Trundle Street. This wheelchair friendly facility is open for inspection and use every Thursday from 9.30am until 1pm. Visits at any other time can be arranged, using contact details below. Individuals or small groups are very welcome as are new members. The society has received a financial grant from BCC which it intends using on the purchase of electronic hardware that will further enhance our ability to display our collection. By car, the hall is approachable by way of either Glenalva Terrace or Pratt Street. Council bus routes 350 390 598 and 599 stop nearby and Enoggera station on Ferny Grove line is just a short walk in the direction of Samford Road. To arrange a visit, to become a member or to purchase our publications, phone Dave on 3366 3191 or email edhs.secretary@ gmail.com.

‘Little Big Swim Hearts’ – Saving Lives in Cambodia
In Cambodia six children die from drowning every day. Drowning is the number one cause of death for children over the age of 12 months.
Little Big Swim School is launching ‘Little Big Swim Hearts’ a program raising money for Little Big Swim Instructors and other volunteers to travel to Cambodia for two weeks a year to begin to make small changes to these alarming drowning statistics. Little Big Swim Hearts will focus on delivering life saving water safety skills directly to children. They also recognize that teaching parents, grandparents and other adult community members how to swim can positively impact drowning statistics like these. The proceeds of all of their holiday programs will all contribute towards the Instructors taking their learn to swim knowledge to Cambodia. To help raise funds Little Big Swim School have roped in several crafting groups to make fabric heart keyrings and heart pillows. 100% of the sales of these items go towards travel costs for our swim teachers to volunteer. If you’d like to get involved you can help make Hearts for sale, sell hearts on the project’s behalf or you can donate directly to the project by visiting their Go Fund Me Page. If you’d like to learn more about the Fund Raising program please visit www.littlebigswim.com.au and click on ‘Little Big Swim Hearts, Cambodia’

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic
Robin Botic
Dear Robin, When my partner upsets me – in particular by letting me down in some major way – we are never able to talk about it. A couple of examples of this happened recently. He offered to do something for me and with me. I didn‘t impose on him by asking. On both occasions I made arrangements that involved other people. On both occasions he bailed out at the last minute or forgot about it, because he had to do stuff with the mates, and they were expecting him. When I got angry, his reply was, ‘What’s the hassle? You can change it.’ When I got upset about this, he goes into ‘poor me’ mode, and tries to put it back on me. When I said “I can‘t rely on you to do what you said you would, and offered. He then turns it around into, ’You can‘t accept me the way I am - You don‘t love me stuff - You are always saying we should be able to love people for who they are’ etc. etc. I feel like I’m canned, can’t open my mouth, and am being manipulated into accepting his behaviour, or else I don’t love and accept who he is. I am still very angry about this. Gail. Dear Gail, Accept/love-me-for-who-I-am – this phrase, along with the demand for unconditional love, are ones that have become an over-used new-age cop-out for not taking responsibility for ourselves or our behaviours, particularly in intimate relationships. Love me for who I am means who I am in essence. You can’t really change your basic intelligence or creativity for that which makes the expression of who you are uniquely different from everyone else. On the other hand, my behaviours are the result of my conditioned reactions to various environmental stimuli. Violence is an extreme example of a learned behaviour, used to control fear of difference and loss. Most of what we think and the behaviours that come out of that are results of our conditioning.
Behaviours are learned. They can be unlearned. Anger management and similar programs are a testament to this fact. Behaviour is what you are talking about in your examples. Most relationship conflict is about how we differ in this or that from our partner, and the different expectations that arise out of each other‘s behaviours. If you are going to live together, you need to be able to talk about and negotiate/compromise these differences. The fact that your partner shies away from any form of confrontation and won‘t discuss anything when he feels at fault is his behavioural reaction to what he finds a stressful situation. It is a refusal for him to look at why he is doing what he is doing, for fear that that somehow implies that his behaviour is also who he is. He doesn‘t realise that he actually has a choice about how he can behave. To avoid confrontation discussion, and therefore any hope of resolution, under the ruse of acceptance, will certainly create resentment, disharmony, and more of what he most fears with the potential loss of the relationship. I would keep encouraging the discussions of difference, if possible without going into anger. I know that‘s hard. Don‘t allow yourself to be conned into feeling somehow you‘re failing in your ability to love if you dare to open your mouth about something he finds difficult to face in his behaviour. Remind him it‘s not you I don‘t love, it‘s your behaviour. See if he‘s willing to explore why he does what he does with his mates versus you. Robin

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove
Ferny Grove Bowls Club Turns 30! The Ferny Grove Bowls Club was founded in 1987 and this month celebrates its thirtieth anniversary. The club has diversified its player base over that time and includes beach volley-ball, among other activities, but is still going strong as one of the few remaining successful bowls clubs operating in Brisbane. The club has always been supportive of other sporting and community groups and is the first to pitch in and offer its facilities for good causes, not-for-profit fundraisers and community meetings. I know there are many local groups who would be lost without the support of the Ferny Grove Bowls Club, which now goes by the name The Grove Sports Club. I would like to extend my congratulations to all involved, from the founding committee in 1987 to the present leadership, and the many thousands of long-time and casual members across the years who worked to make the club a great institution in our community.

Bunya baseball upgrade
Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Bunya baseball upgrade has hit a home run right off the bat, with a $1.492 million tender for preliminary earthworks. The James Drysdale Reserve upgrade will ultimately include a new diamond, dugouts, field lighting, irrigation, car parking and access road. Pine Hills Lightning Baseball Club is based at James Drysdale Reserve for its junior and senior teams. This upgrade will be fantastic in order to cater for the game’s increasing popularity. Preliminary earthworks are expected to commence following clay capping of the site and be complete by August 2017, weather permitting. Page 34 - April 2017, The Hills Echo

Nick Elston
For Ferny Grove Hello, I’m Nick. I grew up in Western Sydney in pretty challenging family circumstances. In 2003, I joined the Army and attended Officer training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon. During my career in the Army, I achieved the rank of Captain and completed a Bachelor of Business Administration. I was deployed domestically and overseas three times; once to Timor-Leste and twice to the Middle East. My decade in the Army was an incredibly formative part of my life. Through the numerous operational positions I held, I learnt how to get the best out of myself and how to support others to do the same. I learnt the importance of loyalty and honour as well as persistence and discipline. I learnt that individuals who come together and work collaboratively and cohesively can achieve what might seem daunting and impossible to the individual. This understanding was strengthened during my service in Operation Larry Assist in 2007, following the devastation caused by Cyclone Larry. Again, in 2011, I served in Operation Queensland Flood Assist, and then shortly after, I was deployed to North Queensland in Operation Yasi Assist. Throughout my Army career I came face to face with people who’s homes and livelihoods had been destroyed. I saw people at their lowest ebb, but I also witnessed humanity at its best - these same shattered people picking themselves up again through the grit of their own determination and with the help of others. I guess, I saw in them the pain I had endured
as a kid and I understood their determination to do better. Its true to say, I became emotionally connected to Queensland. I felt united with the people, and it was in 2011 that my wife, Tara and I moved here permanently, settling in Mitchelton and shortly after welcoming the birth of our daughter, Madison. Since leaving the Army, I haven't found the same level of personal fulfilment; that same ability to make a real and lasting improvement in the lives of other people. This desire to serve is why I am asking you to vote for me to represent the Ferny Grove Electorate at the upcoming state election. I have spoken to many people in the electorate who share my goals. I’ve heard so many great ideas which I’ve taken on board, and I offer this sincere invitation to contact me anytime. The reality is, if we want a Government who’s priorities reflect what is important to us then we need to elect fresh local representatives who will fight for that. I am energised and motivated to serve and get this electorate moving again.
Former Army Captain, Nick Elston and wife, Tara with daughter Madison at their local park in Mitchelton.

Child Care Cost Relief
It’s been a busy couple of weeks in Canberra with some important outcomes for thousands of families in Dickson. The Coalition has secured the most significant reforms to our childcare system in decades. It will make the system more affordable and accessible, particularly for those working the most and earning the least who can expect an 85 per cent subsidy on child care costs. More than 9,500 families in Dickson are expected to benefit from our changes. Details can be found at: https://www.education.gov.au/ jobsforfamilies
Anzac Day and Resources for Schools
Anzac Day takes on added significance this year for us in Dickson where dedicated members of the RSL keep the memory of Australias’s light horsemen alive. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the battle for Beersheeba - perhaps the last great wartime cavalry charge. There are a number of memorials throughout Dickson honouring the Light Horse Brigade. Horsemen of the North Pine region enlisted in the brigade with Lawnton showgrounds used as a training ground. The charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade routed the Turkish forces in the key town in the Gaza and was one of the turning points of WWI.
To mark this year’s Anzac Day commemorations schools in Dickson will receive two books Decision: Stories of leadership in the services and A Bitter Fate: Australians in Malaya and Singapore, December 1941 and February 1942 Posters marking the Beersheeba anniversary and that of the Third Battle of Ypres can be downloaded from the Anzac Portal http://anzacportal.dva.gov.au/ A reminder schools can also participate in the annual Anzac Day Schools’ Awards competition. Entries close May 26 and again information can be found on the Portal.
School Chaplains
I congratulate Arana Leagues Club which has again supported six school chaplaincy programmes this year. The recipient schools included Mitchelton Special School, Mitchelton State School, Grovely State School, Patricks Road State School, Ferny Hills State School and Ferny Grove State School. Each school received $5000 at a presentation ceremony on 20 March. Well done to Joe and his team at Arana Leagues Club!
Assistance for Schools’ Fundraising
Each year I offer to provide a bike to each primary school in the Dickson electorate to help with their fundraising efforts or to be used as a prize for students. I am happy to assist with advertising and if time permits would be pleased to attend the draw or presentation of the bike. Twelve of the 26 primary schools in Dickson have already accepted and we’ll be delivering the bikes in the near future.
Commonwealth Games Baton Relay
In a little over a year from now I’m sure we’ll all be watching the opening ceremony for the 21st Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The Queen’s Baton Relay to the Games has already set off from London and will makes it way through 70 Commonwealth nations before arriving in Australia. You can now nominate someone to be part of the baton relay. Nominees should be people who have contributed to and inspired their community. Nominations are open until May 15. Ryan News
from your Federal Member for Ryan JANE PRENTICE
ANZAC Day
There are many ANZAC Day commemorations taking place around the electorate on 25th April. In 2017 we continue to mark the Centenary of the First World War as well as the 75th Anniversary of some of the events of the Second World War. It is very important we never forget the service and sacrifice of our brave men and women. I hope to see you at one of our local services – watch out for my ANZAC Brochure in the mail which includes service times. Lest we forget.
School visits
One of the enjoyable activities as the Member for Ryan is visiting our wonderful school communities. During nonParliamentary Sitting weeks I have enjoyed presenting new Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Straight Island flags to the students and teaching them about their important history. I have also congratulated many 2017 School Leaders and presented them with certificates.
Death of our last Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel
In sad news, the man who is believed to be the last living ‘fuzzy wuzzy angel’, Faole Bokoi, has died in his home village in Papua New Guinea. The ‘fuzzy wuzzy angels’ (Papua New Guinean natives who were so named for their frizzy hair) became legends for their support of the Australian troops who fought the Japanese in the Second World War. The ‘fuzzy wuzzy angels’ acted as stretcher bearers and porters, carrying ammunition and supplies to our troops. We should never forget their loyalty and support to our soldiers, especially with our upcoming ANZAC Day commemorations.
Autism Awareness Month
April is Autism Awareness Month. ‘Go blue for Autism Day’ on is 2nd April, when iconic buildings across Australia and the world will turn their lights blue. The month will promote awareness of Autism through campaigns and events. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime affecting 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls. People with ASD can experience difficulties with communication, social interaction and restricted/repetitive interests and behaviours. This year all funds raised through Go Blue for Autism will help Autism Queensland provide education, therapy and support services for children and adults living with autism. THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN THUMBS UP to Up to yet another election
looming on the horizon. While the political fray is usually very entertaining, there can only ever be one result......a new crop of politicians that we pay for!
THUMBS DOWN to the deterioration
of Test cricket in India. No longer a test of skill against the world’s best spinners it has become a slanging match between players and a test of which curator can produce the worst pitch. Give the umpires some yellow or red cards for timeouts to recognise bad behaviour.
THUMBS UP to real people whose lives are nothing like the Kardashians. For the good of what is real against unreal, let’s hope TV management also promote shows that showcase good, some bad but not the ugly.
THUMBS DOWN to more increases in
Health Funds subscriptions. Electricity, water and health care are essential services yet our pollies allow companies the extract huge profits. Time to control these industries by legislation and tie increases to the basic wage increases. Maybe we should add banking to the list.
THUMBS UP to me. I became a complete alternative and outcast by offering to pay cash at a servo. I almost admitted to not owning a mobile phone but that could have resulted in complete public humiliation.
