Coming To A Park Near You!
Exciting times are ahead for Ferny Grove with the unveiling of the first designs for a brand new kids’ aqua park.
The aqua park will be built by Brisbane City Council at the Keperra Picnic Grounds, corner of Upper Kedron Road and Samford Road and will sit next to the existing playground. Construction is set to commence in July 2018 and be completed by the end of the year. In addition, the facility will be open year round and free for all to enjoy. The Ferny Grove Aqua Park will provide an interactive water play environment that is accessible to people of all ages and abilities. Key features will include: • A level splash pad area which provides access for all. • Elevated water play elements including discharge bucket, small tipping buckets, spray tunnel, water cannons, and overhead spray feature. • 24 ground elements including arch sprays, stream jets, bubblers, misting ground sprayers and themed sprayers. • An interactive water table that provides wheelchair access as well as toddler play. • Tiered seating walls with new shade trees for viewing of water play area • Additional picnic facilities with electric BBQ. • Accessible pathways to provide access from carpark to water play, picnic facilities and amenities building. To accommodate the forecasted popularity of this facility, reconfigured car parking including additional carpark spaces and mini-bus carparks are included in the design. This park is set to be a hit with locals as Aqua Parks have become increasingly popular over the past few years according to recent statistics. ‘Over the peak summer period between September and January, Brisbane City Council’s 22 pools welcomed nearly 1.6 million people which is up around 17 percent on the previous year,’ said Brisbane City Council Graham Quirk. The Gap Ward Councillor Steve Toomey said the project would deliver a range of new public facilities for the picnic grounds, creating a vibrant recreational hub for the community. ‘I will be seeking feedback from the community about the design, ahead of construction on the project commencing in July,’ said Cr Toomey. Garden Comp Gears Up For Its 50th Year!
The President of the organizing committee for The Hills District and Bunya Garden Competition, Sue Quirk, is excited about this year’s event reaching the major milestone of 50 years continuous running. Sue says that the Committee is more advanced than usual in preparations for this year’s event. The rainfall over the last month has been very encouraging to all keen gardeners, and augers well for increased entries in this year’s competition, after some difficult seasonal conditions in 2016 and 2017, including last year’s dry months leading up to the judging time. The rain outlook is continuing well into Autumn, consistent with the Bureau of Meteorology prediction for a mild El Nina pattern in 2018. ‘We all talk about the weather in our day to day social interaction, but to serious gardeners, just like farmers in our rural regions, weather and rain is central to successful growing and gardening, so it is as if Mother Nature has smiled on the Competition, just when needed,’said Sue. The Committee is now predicting this welcome rainfall will result in the Competition being inundated with entries for the 50th Year. Ferny Grove Set For Vibrant New Precinct
Honeycombes Property Group, a private Queensland developer, has been appointed by the Queensland Government to redevelop the current bitumen commuter carpark at the Ferny Grove Train Station into a vibrant mixed use development.
It is envisaged the site will be transformed into a mixed use precinct. It is proposed to include a childcare, medical facilities, residential apartments, speciality retail, food and beverage, cinema complex, full line supermarket and a stand alone fast food outlet. All of the above is subject to Brisbane City Council approval. During the design phase of the Transit Orientated Development, the developers will ensure that commuters’ requirements will align with the mix of retail, entertainment and apartments creating a vibrant place for the community to meet and live. The State Government has obtained funding for an extra 250 commuter car spaces due to growing need of the patrons in the region, increasing the park and ride facility under the State’s control to in excess of 1100 carparks, with the majority of these car spaces to be undercover. A new connection to Samford Road will be constructed to assist with traffic circulation that will be handed back to the State upon completion. During construction, estimated at $95 million, 629 fulltime equivalent jobs will be created, with approximately a further 431 full-time equivalent jobs once the development is operational. The direct injection of approximately $71million into the local economy is sure to create a positive flow effect
to the surrounding region. The total economic output of this project exceeds $230M based on an analysis completed by AEC Group, an independent economic analyst.

BOUTIQUE DEVELOPER FOCUSES ON COMMUNITY
A Streetscape of Highbury By Mosaic
Mosaic Property Group is creating a new urban utopia in Upper Kedron and feel privileged to be joining the suburb they describe as ‘one of Brisbane’s best kept secrets’.
Highbury by Mosaic, a collection of 26 exclusive homes set in a green pocket at the foot of the picturesque D’aguilar Range, is joining the portfolio of boutique residential projects that the Brisbane-based developer is known for throughout south-east Queensland. Highbury is a primary focus for Mosaic’s community engagement team, who worked closely with the local council to reach a sensitive outcome in line with the community’s vision. ‘We believe a community focused approach that is proactive, transparent and authentic is essential to our continued relationship with the community, and best outcomes can only
be achieved through a shared vision,’ said Brook Monahan, the Managing Director of Mosaic. Mosaic understood the need to be conscious of the neighbourhood plan and community concerns surrounding lot size and product quality. Therefore, Highbury offers a diverse mix of contemporary homes that showcase latest design trends on generous lots ranging from 450sqm to 2700sqm. ‘We listened to concerns regarding density and connectivity and significantly reduced our number of dwellings on our application and added a public walkway through to the park,’ said Brook Monahan. ‘Our main objective moving forward into construction is to ensure residents are informed of what’s occurring in their neighbourhood and have access to information explaining what’s happening during the entire process via our website and Facebook.’ Furthermore, Mosaic is contributing $350,000 towards infrastructure charges that will improve roads, parks and more, and a further $350,000 to restoring the waterway corridor at the back of the site. ‘We also participated in the Upper Kedron Community Tree Planting. It’s what a good neighbour would do, and we believe it’s our duty to act as a good neighbour,’ said Brook Monahan. At just 12km from Brisbane’s CBD, Highbury allows residents to be close to never to be built-out bushland that will overlook a protected, green and tranquil wildlife enclave. The fully turn-key homes range in price from $676,500 to $819,000 and include high quality finishes such as 900mm kitchen appliances and stone benchtops as standard. Construction began end of January 2018. For more information, please call 1300 336 989 or visit www. mosaicproperty.com.au

New Parkland Community Arrives In Everton Hills
Advertorial
The transformation of Everton Hills into a thriving lifestyle destination extends well beyond its proximity to protected natural forests, leading schools and retail. You only need to look at the changing architectural language to see a new dynamic is also at play.
In April, the creator of the luxurious Palazzo Versace hotel and numerous award-winning developments, Sunland Group, will launch the first home release at The Hills Residences. Located on the corner of Francis and Bunya Roads, The Hills Residences makes a grand statement of uncompromised design excellence – striking geometric facades, expertly-curated landscaping, and the warm welcome of open green spaces. Sunland Group Managing Director, Sahba Abedian, said a third of this vibrant new community is dedicated to open space, with a large central parkland and 3,500sqm of preserved bushland located a short stroll from every home. “Sunland has always understood the value of enduring architectural and landscape design, and these principles resonate strongly throughout The Hills Residences,” Mr Abedian said. “This unique collection of terrace homes will feature a mix of three-bedroom and three-bedroom-plus-study designs, complete with a multi-purpose room, two bathrooms, guest powder room, generous living areas, and quality finishes. “Architectural facades, timber detailing, and artistic landscaping will add beauty and individuality to the residences,
intimately connected to their urban setting through landscaped pedestrian networks. “The connection between the interior spaces and the external environment gives each home a refined aesthetic, while the selection of premium finishes, stone bench tops and open plan design create the perfect living environment.” Mr Abedian said the community’s close proximity to local schools, public transport and neighbourhood retail precincts will provide considerable amenity for residents. The site is located a four-minute drive from Grovely Train Station, with direct services to the Brisbane CBD. While prices have not yet been released, he said they are expected to start from $470,000. The project is being jointly marketed by Colliers International and Sunland Group. April Sees the Start of Netball Fixtures
Arana Netball Club teams are looking forward to the Netball this year. Ruby was the lucky recipient of one of five start of Downey Park fixtures, scheduled for Saturday Lorna Jane $100.00 gift vouchers donated to the Downey Park Association to be given to new players. Ruby was one of the 21st April. It has been a long lead-up to the season this year, waiting until after the Commonwealth Games and Easter holidays. Team registrations and gradings were completed mid-March, and teams have had several weeks practice with their new combinations under the guidance of their coaches. While most teams are full at this time, there may still be a space for some players, especially in the young teams, 8 years and older, so for any enquiries please contact Club President, Jenna, on 0404 132 007 or the Registrar, Janice, on 0407 625 399, if interested. Congratulations to Ruby Clifford, a new player with Arana

lucky ones whose name was drawn – it is hoped this is the start of a long and happy association for Ruby with netball. As a good warm-up to the season, a composite team of Arana Netball modified players (from Arana 9 and Arana 10) competed in the Pine Rivers Netball Association modi. carnival at Bray Park in March. The Arana girls enjoyed their day and were successful against the other teams they played. Thanks go to Ashley who was their coach for the day. At this level, 10 years and under, teams play with modified rules, making it easier to learn skills and basic rules before playing more competitively. Arana Netball Club operates through the efforts of volunteers, including those on the Committee. Club meetings are held monthly, on the third Monday, in the Arana Sports meeting room at the Hills District Community Hall, Dawson Parade, commencing at 7.30pm. The next meeting is scheduled for 16th April, and meetings are open for all interested to attend. Ideally every team will have a representative at each meeting during the season. Arana Netball’s rostered turns at the Arana Sports raffles at the Arana Leagues Club commence in April and continue through the season. Each team has been allocated dates to man these raffles, which are the Club’s main fundraisers for the year. Volunteers are thanked in advance for their efforts on the raffles. Enabling Excellence in Girls’ Education The theme for everything we do at Mount Alvernia College is Enabling Excellence in Girls’ Education. This theme was played out in the results received by the 2017 Senior cohort. The students achieved really well in their OP scores, and all OP-eligible students received offers of university placement. Students who were not university-bound are on track with their career choices. We are proud of our students, and wish them well for the future.

Year 7 students were welcomed formally to life at the College at the start of the academic year. Our process of transition to secondary college, which begins in Year 6, worked so well that students settled in quickly to college life, and are now engaging positively in the totality of the Mount Alvernia experience. Preparation and planning are well underway for the changes to Senior Secondary Schooling. Parent meetings began last year and will continue throughout 2018 in preparation for Year 11 in 2019. It is an exciting time to be an educator. The Gap State High School’s Honours Program is an academically challenging and inspiring program for gifted and talented students who show ability, initiative and a strong commitment to academic success. The program was designed for students willing to take risks, challenge themselves academically and engage in higher order thinking skills while making genuine links across multiple disciplines. Students have the opportunity to study AMEB theory aligned with their instrumental studies and accelerate through the Australian Curriculum Years 7-10 and the Senior Phase Music Curriculum one year ahead of their cohort. The Gap State High School’s Special Interest Volleyball Program is an Excellence program aimed at fostering holistic athletic development of talented students in the area of Volleyball. The program aims to promote conduct, knowledge and skills, benefiting the students in academic and vocational pursuits and personal development, and develops young people through interactions based on personal challenge, collaborative group work and team dynamics. The Gap Outdoor Adventure and Leadership Studies (GOALS) has been developed as a core program to develop student’s potential for life success while developing personal and social competencies and leadership skills. The GOALS program aims to enhance students’ personal, social and leadership capacities in order to increase their potential for life success and their ability to contribute to and lead in their community. ‘We welcome your interest in our school,’ said a school spokesperson.

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, I’m trying to find a way of dealing with behaviour that I find very disappointing. A few weeks ago my ten-yearold daughter was subjected to some really nasty internet bullying, disappointingly by her cousin Fran, also ten. Even more disappointing has been my sister’s reaction to things subsequent to this. I am at a loss to understand Fran’s behaviour in this. My daughter Jodette and she have been the best of friends, so I don’t understand why Fran wants to hurt Jodette so much in this way. I have sent you a printout of the computer transaction Jodette received anonymously so that you can more readily assess the situation. Threatening to slit my daughter’s throat in the following context I find abhorrent. I’ve also enclosed the picture that went with this: ‘See the d.p. (picture of young girl with her throat slit) U R gonna look like that the next time you mess with my friends or Fran cuz the dude who goes on Fran’s account is my mate. He can track and will kill, and one more thing – stop messing with Sam.’ (Sam is Fran’s friend.) My daughter was terribly upset and she went to get her father who was able to recognise from the web cam image, Fran and Sam despite their disguises. We immediately contacted my sister with the evidence. She was devastated with her daughter’s behaviour. How she dealt with Fran and Fran’s remorse at her actions were fine. My problem is with how she dealt with Fran’s accomplice, Sam and her parents. We wanted to deal directly with Sam’s parents and present what happened. My sister would not give out their details and Sam’s father would have nothing to do with us, and blamed it all on Fran. Sam was not held accountable in any way. My sister still allowed them to play with each other but she punished Fran by not allowing her to see Jodette. In situations since this it seems to me that she has favoured Sam over Jodette. I feel this as a betrayal. I am at a loss to understand my sister’s behaviour in relation to my daughter. I feel that even if Sam’s parents didn’t act, my sister could have at least shown her disapproval of Sam’s complicit behaviour and of the situation more effectively. Christine Dear Christine, This is a nasty example of bullying. I was very pleased to see how sensibly your daughter acted in going to her father as soon as she did, and his response of immediately confronting the situation in the way he did. Bullying is an unfortunate fact of human interaction. As
a society we give mostly lip-service to our intolerance of it. Why do people bully? Well, it’s to do with power and mostly because they can. Many studies have shown that where people’s identities are concealed (the degree of anonymity), and the likelihood of accountability for their actions is low, there is a corresponding likelihood of an increase in anti-social behaviour. Cyberspace with its potential for increased anonymity is a perfect place for bullies. As parents we need to be far more vigilant in our supervision. Children learn from what they see modelled, but they will also learn what they can get away with from what they are held responsible and accountable for. Sam’s parents, unfortunately, reinforce for Sam that she can get away with this sort of behaviour. You are correct in thinking that your sister should have acted in a more responsible way. Sam, if not through her parents, could have learnt accountability if your sister had responded more appropriately. You may feel that your sister has betrayed you but she has betrayed herself even more. There is more than enough evidence for the truth to be seen: that your sister needed to smooth things over and look after her neighbour’s feelings rather than her niece’s is the issue she has to deal with. This is what I would be discussing with her. Your relationship will suffer even more than it has already if you do not also deal with how you’re truthfully feeling. Papering over hurtful wrongs never works. Robin.

The key facility for the Boxer’s development will be located in Redbank, near Brisbane. The Boxer CRV will be equipped with high levels of protection, firepower and mobility which will enable sustained operations, varying from peacekeeping to close combat - this state of the art technology will help keep our troops safe in battle. The benefits of this multi-billion dollar project will flow on to many Queensland companies such as NIOA, Penske, G&O Kert, Ferra Engineering, Global Manufacturing Group and Elbit, who will all receive a boost. Some of the new vehicles, like the one I’m pictured with here, will be stationed just kilometres away at the Gallipoli Barracks. It is great to see our Government honouring its commitment to keep us safe and secure whilst also investing in this area and creating opportunities. On 14 March I joined the Prime Minister and other Federal LNP colleagues at the Gallipoli Barracks in Enoggera to announce that Queensland has won the contract for phase 2 of the LAND 400 Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle (CRV) development. This is a multi-billion dollar investment in Queensland and creates hundreds of new jobs. Queensland based company Rheinmetall has won the contract for Phase 2 of the Land 400 development with their Boxer CRV.
The Australian Government is inviting organisations through an open non-competitive process to apply for grant funding under the Veteran and Community Grants Program from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019. The objective of the Program is to maintain and improve the independence and quality of life for members of the veteran community by providing funding for projects that support activities and services to sustain or enhance health and wellbeing. The expected outcomes of the Program are to: • Deliver projects that are sustainable, financially viable and have an ongoing benefit for members of the veteran community; • Deliver projects that increase opportunities for members of the veteran community, associated with social activity and community participation and/or improve health behaviours and support healthy places. For more information please go to https://www. communitygrants.gov.au/grants/veteran-and-communitygrants or call the Community Grants Hub Hotline on 1800 020 283 and quote 2017-1134 – Veteran and Community Grants.
Free Vaccines for people aged over 65
I am pleased to announce that the Coalition Government will provide two ground-breaking flu vaccines for free to Australians aged 65 years and older. The new vaccines – Fluad® and Fluzone High Dose® – were registered in Australia to specifically provide increased protection for seniors in our community. Both vaccines will be available from April 2018 onwards if you are eligible. If you are over 65 I encourage you to take advantage of this free service ahead of this winter.
Bikes for schools
Primary schools across Dickson will be receiving a letter from me in the near future regarding my Bikes-for-Schools program. Schools can apply for a bike which they can then use for fundraising or as a prize for one of their students.

Out and About in The Gap Ward
With Councillor Steven Toomey New Aqua Park in Keperra Picnic Grounds playground and a park shelter with furniture as stage one of In the 2016 Local Govt. election The Lord Mayor Graham Quick made a commitment to build an Aqua Park in Upper Kedron. Early community consultation in this area led to council scoping a new location at Keperra Picnic Grounds on the corner of Upper Kedron and Samford Roads. I am pleased to announce the new aqua park will be constructed adjacent to the existing park. The new water play environment is suited to all ages and abilities, with a range of features including a splash pad, overhead buckets, water cannons, bubblers and jets. Tiered seating, an electric BBQ, new shade trees, additional car parking spaces and new pathways will deliver a fun day out in our local community. I will be seeking feedback on the design ahead of construction of the project that will commence in July 2018.
Honeyeater Park Upper Kedron
Last year I met with the local community to discuss a new park in Honeyeater Street. I am pleased to advise that funding is secured to install the pathway that will circle the new
this project. I will be consulting with the community in the near future to finalise the play equipment for installation in the next financial year.
Bushland Acquisition, Keperra Saddle
A record 400 hectares of native bushland has been purchased by Council over the past two years through the Bushland Acquisition program and funded via the Bushland Levy. This financial year several hectares of bushland on the Keperra Saddle and The Gap has come into public ownership and adjoins previously acquired bushland. Council will continue to invest in rehabilitation and reforestation of these sites to ensure they will support local fauna and flora. The Keperra Saddle is accessible to residents and provides opportunities such as bird watching, bushwalking and an appreciation of our local natural environment.

Ryan News

ANZAC Day 2018
In 2018, we continue to mark the centenary of the First World War, in particular the series of battles along the Western Front that turned the tide of war in favour of the Allies. For more than a century Australian servicemen and women have become renowned for their bravery, sacrifice and skill. From the Boer War, to the present day, Australians have continued to answer the call of democracy and freedom in the defence of our nation. As Australians attend ANZAC Day Services this year, we commemorate the service and sacrifice of all Australians who have served our country with distinction and honour. To learn more about the ANZACs, visit anzacportal.dva.gov.au.
ANZAC Day Services
Each year I distribute my ANZAC Day Brochure for constituents in Ryan. Keep an eye out for your ANZAC Day Brochure in the mail, which includes information on local Service times. I encourage you to attend a Service hosted by your local RSL on 25 April to commemorate ANZAC Day. For information on ANZAC Day and Services, visit www. rslqld.org.
Poppy Wreaths
Flowers have traditionally been laid on graves and memorials in memory of the dead. I am often asked why I choose to lay RSL Queensland’s poppy wreaths on these occasions, instead of fresh flower wreaths.
I welcomed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to Gallipoli Barracks to announce our investment of more than $5 billion to supply the ADF with Australia’s newest Combat Reconnaissance Vehicles. The 211 new vehicles, produced by Rheinmetall, will enhance the safety, security and protection of Australian troops for the next 30 years.
Following the tradition set by the disabled British veterans of WWI; the wreaths I lay at memorial services across Ryan are made by volunteers in The Brisbane Laurel Club, with membership comprising of Legacy widows, many of whom are widows of war. Legacy provides the raw materials and the Club makes the wreaths which are then sold to RSLs and the money raised goes to Legacy’s general funding which supports widows, families, defence personnel, veterans, and assists with defence members’ and veterans’ health. The purchase of these wreaths also provides funding towards RSL Queensland and their work providing assistance to veterans and their families. These wreaths are also very resilient in both hot and wet weather and the RSL can recycle them after the event.
