Time To Say Goodbye
Well it is time to say goodbye. Yes after much discussion and thirty-four years of the family owning the Arana Hills Hardware, we have decided due to family circumstances and the slowing down of trade, that now is the time.
Losing Dad this past year has been a big impact on the family and business, even though our parents retired from it over ten years ago and assigned the running of it over to myself and my brother Stephen. Without Dad it seems lost. It was his baby that he purchased thirty-four years ago when he was made redundant from his day job. Dad was a mechanical engineer and he worked for ANI Sargents his whole life. When he left he decided to buy a hardware store in a moment of delusion. He invited myself and my brother to quit our day jobs and come and run it with him and Mum. At the time I was working in the steel industry and Stephen was a fully qualified Electrician working for industry. Dad also set up his other business as a consulting Engineer which he continued to work at until he was ninety years of age, God bless him. We wanted to say a special goodbye to the wonderfully loyal customers that we have come to know over the years, watching your children grow and now some are coming in with their own children. It has been a wonderful experience. You are not just customers. We always considered you friends and the one thing that we will both miss and one of the reasons that any small business owner will tell you, it is you who keep us coming back day after day. You are what make it a pleasure to come to work. The chats and laughs that we have each day
and not to mention some of the jokes, not always good but a good laugh anyway. Over the last four years Anthony and I have had the enjoyment of having our beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog Kareena at work with us. She came to know many of you and your dogs. We would just like to let her many friends know that unfortunately she lost her short and fierce battle with cancer in July and is no longer with us. She is missed enormously. You will see us around as we live locally so don’t be shy, say hello as we will always be up for a good chat. We will be trading up to the 30th of September. EXPO EXTRAVAGANZA
On the 21st July, the first ever Health and Wellbeing Expo for The Gap took place atWalton Bridge Reserve. The Gap’s Health and Wellness Expo was a huge success featuring 42 stall holders. This was four times more than event organiser Chantal Coleman expected. Locals poured into the event with the coffee van selling out of coffee and the chef from Zegatos selling out of his Grilled Ribs and Calamari! Exhibitors ranged from a variety of health, fitness and wellness providers from the local community. This expo allowed the community to come along and connect with the amazing array of committed and passionate local health care providers whilst having fun with interactive displays, demostrations and free trials. In addition, there was something for all the family with the kids being entertained with face painting and childrens’ Yoga demonstrations. Due to the success of this event, The Gap’s Health and Wellness Expo is now set to be an annual event on the calendar with next year’s event looking set to be bigger and better than ever. ‘I have had so many locals ask about next year’s event - it’s obviously something this community needs,’ said Chantal. If your business would like more information regarding the 2019 event please contact Chantal on 0417 737 066

Arana Netball News
Grand Finals are scheduled for the 1st September with most Arana Netball competitive teams poised to play in the finals. Well done to all teams and coaches, and all the very best for final games. Following Grand Final day, Arana Netball will hold trophy night on Saturday 15th September, as an early evening event at the Hills District Community Hall. Many players are forming and entering their own teams in summer night competition, most looking to play at Downey Park courts in the QCNA competition. This competition is a great way to further one’s netball experience. For anyone wanting to play summer night games, contact the club now as teams may not yet have full numbers. For a sporting club to operate effectively, Committee and other volunteers are a vital part, and with the A.G.M. for Arana Netball Club on Monday 20th August, it is hoped that a good number of parents, senior players, and others interested, will attend the meeting. If all positions are filled, no job becomes too onerous as the load is shared. The A.G.M. will be held in the Arana Sports meeting room at the Hills District Community Hall, Dawson Parade, and will commence at 7.30pm, to be followed by a general monthly meeting. For further enquiries call 0404 132 007 or email arananetballclub@gmail.com.

Skip the Ekka flus and queues this year, and gather the family for a good old-fashioned day of fun at the Patricks Road Carnival on Saturday 1 September, hosted by the P&C Association. The school will be transformed into a spring Carnival with a side show alley, more than 20 market stalls, food stands, and entertainment with performances from school music ensembles and local clubs. With more than ten rides, there is something for the young, and the young-at-heart. Whether it’s a whirl on the dodgem cars, a spin in the tea cups, or the dizzying heights of the Round-Up - everyone can join in the fun. While the kids indulge in the rides, mums and dads can relax in the beer and wine tent, or enjoy a coffee and piece of cake. No Carnival would be complete without market stalls – with so many on offer we promise to keep you entertained. We have all your favourites with cake, game, prize, plant, book, toy and clothes stalls. With so much to see and do, replenish with a snack from one of our many food stalls serving sushi, chicken curry or traditional festival fare such as hot chips, burgers, and of course a sausage sizzle. For the sweet tooth, Ruby the Little Red Van will be serving scrumptious ice-creams, and there will be snow cones and fairy floss. Carnival-goers are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles as a free hydration station will be available to fill-up bottles with filtered and chilled water. Please bring backpacks as plastic bags are no longer able to be offered. The fun starts at 11am, with rides open from midday until 5pm. Save the Samford Commons buildings
The State Government has been urged to match potential funding by the Federal Government and Moreton Bay Regional Council to help develop the Samford Commons Precinct.
Local federal MP Peter Dutton and Mayor Alan Sutherland have strongly backed the proposal to develop the old CSIRO site at Samford into an innovation hub and community space. The council has pledged $1.5 million to the Commons project to match $1.5 million sought under the Federal Government’s Building Stronger Regions scheme. That money will enable the construction of a new building but a matching grant by the State Government would allow the existing buildings to be refurbished as well. The local council’s decision to not invest in saving the existing
buildings and to replace the character filled buildings with one new building, means that the community and project’s space requirements won’t be met as well as a loss of history for the area. ‘These buildings are an iconic part of Samford, a green lung to the Brisbane and Moreton Bay regions, and State Government funds would ensure they are put to great community use,’ said Samford Commons Board member Mr Blacket. Although Samford Commons currently only have one tiny official building, the project has achieved amazing things including; Urban Farm selling locally grown produce; War on Waste Group – saving waste produce from landfill; Community Library, STEM Immersion programme, Maker Festival 2017; 90 vocational trainees graduated from programs held at Samford Commons and the Wellbeing Festival 2016.

Discover the Extraordinary in the Ordinary
Nestled amongst tall leafy trees with beautiful natural outdoor spaces, Willmore Kindergarten and Preschool is set apart by how the space feels when you first enter the gate. You feel like you belong. You become a part of the Willmore family.
Willmore Kindergarten was established 48 years ago by the Ferny Hills community who wanted a place for their children to grow and learn. Willmore offers a Pre-Prep program where children are believed to be strong, capable and competent. When children feel safe and secure and connected to others, they thrive. Children have a highly qualified, experienced and innovative teaching team and they can interact with the same group of children each day. This closeness establishes the best possible foundation for the children’s learning. Willmore’s teaching team are passionate about advocating for young children and researching alongside them to learn and discover the extraordinary in the ordinary. Today, as a result of the hard work and commitment of parent committees, staff and a supportive community, the kindergarten continues to thrive. Willmore invites you to come and meet the teachers, explore their beautiful community kindergarten and experience Willmore in action at their Open Day on Saturday 8 September, from 10am to 2pm.

Samford Steiner expands to meet growing demand
S a m f o r d Va l l e y Steiner School is expanding the enrolment capacity of the school.
An increasing demand for Steiner Education, which promotes creativity, practical capability and socialemotional health as well as academics, has led to this decision. ‘Samford Valley has experienced long waiting lists for several years,’ Director Pep Wright explained. ‘We are committed to seeing Steiner Education, an important contributor to the current and future education Prep Student, Oliver discovering the outdoors landscape, available to all who seek it. It is very difficult to turn families away from an education we know advantages children’s growth, learning and health in the modern world, and are delighted to extend the reach of the school in this way.’ In 2018 a second Prep group was established to meet waitlist demand. Prep grandparent Lianne is delighted that her grandson is able to attend the school as a result of the added class, ‘The teachers are so dedicated and make time to chat during the week. Oliver gets to play and explore at the same time he is learning. This is a wonderful start to his schooling and I am so happy we made this choice,’ said Lianne. The school Board recently confirmed the decision to continue double streamed classes and are confident this growth will enhance the experience of current and future students. COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
Relationship Dynamics - Our Challenge to Growth
All relationships are based on sets of interaction. These interactions can display observable dynamics in the way each partner habitually relates to each other. We experience both positive and negative interactions. Problematic negative interactions have a mutually held unconscious negative self belief that drives the system. The pattern of any dynamic takes time to establish and unless a couple has good conflict resolution and communication skills the difference is felt to intensify until it reaches breaking point. A classic and very common dynamic is one termed ‘distancer/ pursuer.’ Behaviour expression of this particular dynamic is where one partner (not always the woman) complains there is a lack of attention and support. The emotional boundaries have changed from the ‘in love phase’ (six months to two years approximately) from one where boundaries dissolve, similarities are thought, perceived to predominate and there is a more enmeshed state of interaction. This is part and parcel of relationship process. However, the pursuer whose emotional comfort is conditional on more enmeshed boundaries perceives this shift, feels anxiety and fears this process of disengagement as withdrawal from them and assumes less attention is about loss of love. The pursuer’s often clamorous attempt to regain the safety of the ‘in love’ status quo push the distancer even further away. The distancer is equally discomforted often reporting feelings of being smothered, crowded, hassled, can never make the partner happy, there is no space allowed for them. Each feels the other is at fault. The more one pushes the more the resistance increases and round and round it goes with no resolution and more recrimination. Liken this to two opposing force fields pushing against each other, each feeling the energetic resistance of the other and trying to defend their space. The defense however, because of the behavioural strategies employed, is often perceived more like an attack and fear of loss and a lack of acceptance is felt. It is in having the courage to honestly face the challenge to ourselves from the other that we grow. It is not easy. The cry ‘if you loved me you would’ is not about love but emotional blackmail. It is about us preferring our partner to change rather than having to do it ourselves. Each couple has their
www.hillsecho.com
own unique twist and the ego is very manipulative and persuasive at this point. It will find all manner of ways to justify its expectation that the other should accommodate it. There are strategies and skills that can be used to support us in understanding and dealing with these challenges.

Promoting Safety on Neighbourhood Roads
The Lord Mayor’s budget for 2018-19 has allocated each Councillor $30,000 to continue the Speed Awareness Signage (SAM) project and $28,500 for permanent LED Signage. This year a new SAM sign will be installed in Canvey Road Upper Kedron. I expect the sign to be placed in early August and will remain there until December 2018. The goal of this project is to promote safety through driver awareness and minimise speeding on neighbourhood roads. If you are travelling at the correct speed a smiley face
is displayed on the sign, while a 'SLOW DOWN' message is displayed if you are exceeding the speed limit. The program has shown a marked decrease in the number of motorists travelling over the speed limit after passing the signs. The average speed reduction across all sites has been 10 km/hr. Over the past year residents have requested signage in their streets and I welcome any requests for portable and permanent signs in additional locations.
New Shelter for Small Dog Off Leash at Upper Kedron
A shelter with seating in the Small Dog Off Leash area will be installed this financial year in the Upper Kedron Reserve. Thank you to the residents who participated in the park consultation. I know this will be a welcome addition to the area.
New Pathway Lighting Inverness Street to Canvey Road Upper Kedron
This budget year I have been able to secure lighting in Inverness Street park. Pathway lighting will be installed into the park connecting Inverness Street to Canvey Road. This lighting will improve access ability on a well-used walking track accessing public transport on Canvey Road.

For a week in July this year, I joined some of my Parliamentary colleagues whilst embedded with the sailors of the Royal Australian Navy as part of Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC). This Exercise is part of the annual Australian Defence Force Parliamentary Program (ADFPP) where we experience the challenges of life in the Services, and of the capabilities of the Australian Defence Force. RIMPAC is a major United States Pacific Fleet biennial combined exercise to strengthen international maritime partnerships, enhance interoperability and improve the readiness of participating forces for a wide range of potential operations. This year the exercise involves 47 surface ships, five submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel from 25 countries.

Samford Road review update
Samford Road commuters may have noticed an easing of the traffic problems since changes were made to the barracks entrance earlier this year. The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has been conducting a traffic flow review of Samford Road from Dawson Pde to Imbross St since 2017. As part of the review I requested TMR look into the possibility of alterations to the Barracks entrance of a morning. TMR considered this request as part of the study and trialled an increase in right turn signalling into the Barracks by 10 seconds. Further, at certain times of the morning the signalling was run twice per cycle to improve traffic movement. TMR have reported the signalling changes resulted in a significant travel time reduction. Before the changes were introduced the average travel time from Osborne Road to Wardell Street was eight minutes. Following the changes the same journey took only three minutes. Since the results of the trial TMR have decided to make the change permanent. This is the first tangible dividend from the review and a big win for Samford Road commuters. Engineers will present business cases for other intersections to Minister Mark Bailey later this year for his consideration.
New SES hub for region
I was privileged to be part of the sod-turning for the new State Emergency Service (SES) Depot at Bunya with Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Matt Constance at the James Drysdale Reserve. The Palaszczuk Government contributed half of the $2 million to construct an administration centre and training
facility to cater for The Arana Hills SES Group’s 60 volunteers. Construction is expected to finish mid next year.
Help to find cheapest fuel
From December, we will be able to see every servo’s fuel prices as part of a two year fuel price reporting trial on our smartphones. Once the price has been changed at the bowser, it will be updated within 30 minutes. Servos that do not report their price changes on time or accurately will be hit with fines. Prices will be published on apps and and websites such as Motormouth, GasBuddy, PetrolSpy, RACQ and Compare the Market.
