The Care Bag Project. Can you help?

$1.8m to fix Everton Park black spot

More often than not, when a child is placed in a foster home, they arrive with no more than the clothes on their back. The Sweet Dreams and Good Night Wishes charity organisation aims to provide a ‘Care Bag’ to each child when they are placed into foster care. A ‘Care Bag’ is a backpack style bag that contains essential items to help them adjust to their new surroundings. Having their own backpack of items can help reduce anxiety and bring comfort to the child in such hard circumstances. Currently, one of our local schools, Patricks Road State School, is running a drive for items that can be included in Mackenzie from Year One at Patricks Road the backpacks. The school is reaching State School with just some of the bags that out to the local community for donations of items for bags. have already been donated Each bag contains items for boys and girls aged between 2 and 16 years of age and may include:- a set of PJ’s, a set of clothes, a hair brush and hair bands (if for a girl), a colouring book and/or pencils, socks, underwear and/or a soft toy. Other items may be included such as a hat, drink bottle, ball, small blanket etc. However, the following items are not accepted - shoes, food, razors, aerosol cans, shampoo/body wash/soap, bubbles, slime or anything which might leak. It is also important that all items are new. Bags and items can be dropped off at Patricks Road State School’s office or Exquisite Fitness Studio, 15/1147 South Pine Road, Arana Hills until the 30th of August. If you can help in any way, please get onboard with this project. Whether it be one or two items that are donated or a whole bag, a little goes a long way.

A solution is on the way for a notorious Everton Park black spot. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey announced a $1.8 million upgrade was expected to start before the end of the year. ‘The stretch of South Pine Road near Halle Street has seen multiple crashes in wet weather, and residents have clearly had enough,’ said Mr Bailey. ‘Department of Transport and Main Roads officers believe driver behaviour was a major contributor to those crashes but I asked them to undertake an urgent review to see if anything could be done to improve the road.’ Upgrades will include a minor road realignment, drainage improvements and new surfacing which should help to improve the safety for road users and the local community. While the works aim to reduce crashes at this location, drivers are reminded to drive to the conditions and posted speed signs.

Three generations enjoy kindergarten at MPC

When choosing a kindergarten for our children we knew that we wanted one that was play based and eco-conscious. My partner Broderick suggested that we look at Mitchelton PreSchooling Centre (MPC) where he had attended kindergarten. Being a first timer at MPC, I appreciated the leafy outlook of the kindergarten, with trees the children could climb. I was thrilled! I am so glad that Broderick and I chose MPC as the sense of community is unbelievable. The friendly and supportive teachers are exceptional. I have learnt a lot about community, a sense of belonging and how important it is for both my children and us. My children love (and loved) going to MPC where they feel valued, supported and have agency. I know that I made the right choice to support our children's life learning journey.

Our children are the third generation in our family to attend MPC. Broderick's mother has always told me that ‘Brod loved going to MPC and he would have stayed forever if he could have.’ I love that we are continuing the family tradition of belonging to the MPC community and that as a new parent, it fulfilled everything I wanted for my childrens’ early learning. It’s no wonder that we are not the only third generation family attending MPC. I understand it and I don't feel like I want to leave this community either. We'll be back when we are grandparents! Oztag set to take summer by storm

Ferny Hills Oztag’s family are planning their biggest summer season to date, which will all kick off on the 11th September.

The club is really excited about the upcoming season as they are constantly gaining new teams and this summer they will be seeing a Mixed C division for the VERY FIRST TIME! Ferny Hills Oztag have divisions and teams suitable for all ages and abilities for both mixed and men’s players. The competitive A grade division consists of representative players that travel to Kawana Stadium once a year to battle it out for the title of State Cup Champions. Alternatively there are Mixed B and C host players of all ages and abilities looking for a fun and social sport. Girls from as young as 14 play in the seniors comp on Wednesday nights while one of the Men’s A teams are mainly 50+ that have been playing Oztag together for 20 or so years. This is the same team (featured on the front cover of this edition) that went all the way to the Grand Final at State Cup. Unfortunately they lost in extra time. Junior teams also have fun, with little ones as young as five starting to develop the skills required to play Oztag. Passing, running, tagging, and kicking – the key aspects of Oztag sees the venue hosting many league, soccer and hockey teams who enjoy playing this game as an off season sport. There are also business vouchers available to people who have never played Oztag before and would like to enter a team for FREE under a business name. That’s $1100 for the season free of charge! The Arana Hills Church of Christ jumped on board this winter season to give Oztag a go under the business voucher and are already planning to return for the summer season! Summer will be the club’s second season at their brand new pristine fields located at 29 Darien Street, Bridgeman Downs. Mitch, the Venue Manager, has been running the club for four years now and is very passionate about the Ferny Hills Rams, working hard to try and create an environment that is fun, inclusive and engaging for people of all ages and experience levels. For more information contact Mitch on 0412135603, email fernyhills@oztag.com or visit their facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/fernyhillsoztag/

News From The Den By the Golden Valley Keperra Lions

Each year, Scouts Queensland holds a camp at their Samford camping grounds. The Camp is called ‘Agoonaree.’ Brisbane Scouts are paired with a special needs child to give them a Scouting experience in a safe environment. Our Lions Club sponsors two children each year and local lad, Oscar Williams, is one of the attendees this year. Samford Show was our last big event. Annually, Lions volunteer to assist the Samford Show Society by taking ticket sales at the front gate and parking cars in their grounds. We had two shifts of 30 people on Saturday and Sunday, which were ably assisted by other local Lions Clubs such as, Brisbane Bunya and Brisbane Inner North. The weekend was a big one with low temps in the early morning, westerly winds till noon, followed by beautiful winter days in the Samford sunshine. This month, we are back at Bunnings Keperra and Harvey Norman Everton Park with our BBQ’s. We hope to see you there. CAN YOU HELP?! We need more volunteers to keep these programs going, people who have some time to give back to their Community. Contact me, Paul Ryan – GVK Lions cottontrees@bigpond.com or 0409 688 675.

Works start on Samford’s new community hub

Page 10 - August 2019, The Hills Echo

Samford locals can expect to see demolition work commencing on site this month at Samford Parklands, as the first stage of works get underway on the new community hub. The demolition component will see thirteen buildings demolished, which does not include the existing glasshouses. A new state-ofthe art community facility will be built in its place. Once completed, the community hub will boost social connectedness and provide opportunities for a diverse range of activities including a community library, tenancy spaces for important support services, kitchen facilities, amenities, offices and shared use meeting/activity spaces. The design of the community hub is currently underway and is expected to be completed by August 2019.

Tramway moving with the times

Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed

Brisbane Tramway Museum’s 65 tram is the only remaining operational tram of the class known as ‘Cross Bench Class’ Most classes of trams underwent few changes during their lifetime, except for slight modifications as technology improved or designs were updated. However, one class saw several variations and transformations. Our tram 65 is the only remaining operational tram of the class known as ‘Cross Bench Class.’ Most of this class were 10 bench trams, but early on, some 12 bench models were produced. In total, thirty-two 10 bench trams were built between 1907 and 1925 (65 was built in 1921). This class was more affectionately known as ‘Toastracks’ (for obvious reasons) and less affectionately as ‘Jumping Jacks’ due to the rocking motion caused by the large overhang either end of the short wheelbase bogie (known as a truck). Some of the 12 bench trams were used to tow lighter ‘trailer trams’ on busy lines. However, most of the trailers were eventually motorised to become trams (10 benchers) in their own right. Later in life, a couple of cross bench cars were converted into Small Central Aisle cars (see The Hills Echo June 2019 edition). Our 65 was repainted in original colours by the BCC Bus Garage at Toowong jointly with the museum in 1986. Meanwhile, Men’s Shed members are close to completing a simulator so that kids (and dads) can get the feel of actually driving a tram. Our list of Charters (special days for groups such as schools, clubs, pensioner groups, weddings, birthdays etc) is still growing and more crew are need to keep up with demand.

Steve Brett

Owner & Operator - TaxArana and Tax4Tradies

Under the guidance of owner Steve Brett, TaxArana has fast become the go-to tax agent for the Hills District. Established just under 3 years ago, Steve has built a community following through not only providing an efficient and quality taxation service, but also through his passion for helping others. A TaxArana ‘pop up shop’ has been opened in the Ferny Grove shopping plaza (opposite Domino’s) to enable locals to pop in and make their tax appointments. Steve recognises that booking your appointment with your accountant is likely one of the most procrastinated phone calls you can make. So, being able to stop in and make your appointment on the way to the shops is a lot more convenient, and takes a load off your mind. Steve has been a force behind local ‘blanket drives’ for years. This year over 1200 items of warm clothing, blankets and toiletry packs have been donated by our generous local community. Steve drives into Fortitude Valley regularly (sometimes up to three times a week) to deliver these items to 3rd Space, an organisation helping the vulnerable and homeless stay warm in the cooler months. Watch this space, as Steve is currently planning (in collaboration with Picabeen Community Centre) the

3351 6111

‘Arana Hills Breakfast Club’, where free BBQ breakfasts will be hosted in the grounds of the TaxArana office to help those in need. Well established in the financial planning business for 33 years, Steve purchased a local taxation business just under 3 years ago and rebuilt it as TaxArana. Not only does Steve have the experience needed to operate a successful accountancy practice, he also holds a Masters In Business, majoring in Accountancy. Steve is backed by a friendly and professional team of specialist accountants, business advisors and bookkeepers that can assist with your personal tax returns and small business accounting including BAS, Instalment Activity Statements and business planning. If you are looking for a tax agent who is local to the Hills District, trustworthy, has your interests at heart, and knows their tax, then give TaxArana a call! TaxArana always welcomes new clients; personal and business. Whether it’s last years tax return, or a collection of many years of overdue returns, get in touch. TaxArana not only offers competitive fees but can also offer fixed fees for tradies and discounts for retirees. Contact Steve and the friendly team today on 07 3351 6111

Michael Mapp

Litigation Lawyer

McCarthy Durie Lawyers, Arana Hills You can’t get more local than Michael Mapp of McCarthy Durie Lawyers (MDL) Arana Hills. Michael has grown up in the Hills District and is still living here today. Based in the Arana Hills office, he is a highly accomplished lawyer and is also part of the Litigation team at MDL. Although local, he has travelled extensively and visited many countries, including Japan where he taught English (whilst DJ’ing on the side!) for a number of years. However, his love for law was never far from his mind. Whilst learning Japanese, he would request that his his teacher only give him topics to practice regarding criminal law and legal matters! Upon returning to Australia, Michael enrolled in law school to fulfill his desire to become a lawyer. He was admitted in 2014 and was practising by mid 2015.

www.mdl.com.au

For the past four years, he has climbed the ladder and is now an accomplished lawyer in many aspects of the industry. He can help with anything from corporate litigation and criminal law to employment and building disputes. Speaking to Michael, he gives The Hills District a 10/10 for liveability. “I feel The Hills District is the ‘forgotten’ area of Brisbane. Houses are reasonably priced with good sized blocks, we are close enough to the city and there’s a great community here,” said Michael.

Michael’s Top Tip for clients: If you have a dispute with another party, talk the issue through with them before taking action.

A choir for the community

Did you know we have a community choir right on our doorstep that is singing their way into the hearts of our local seniors?

The Serenata Singers is a community choir based in The Gap that performs regularly at local aged care facilities and at community events. They sing a variety of popular, traditional and show tunes that entertain residents. In 2020, the choir will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Desleigh Byrne, who has been part of the Serenata Singers for 10 years, said the 50-strong choir, with a four-part harmony, shows no signs of slowing down - with most members being seniors themselves. ‘No audition is necessary – an ability to read music is an advantage, but the main qualifications are an ability to carry a tune and a love of singing,’ said Ms Byrne. In a recent survey of choir members, valued aspects of membership were identified as making and meeting friends, learning about music, providing entertainment for elderly people, and the thrill of public performance. Additionally, studies have shown that choral singing decreases stress, anxiety and depression and improves physical health in various ways. ‘Music and singing is a very powerful form of therapy and we have seen a number of dementia patients mouth the words to the songs they remember and become responsive to the music by tapping their feet and picking up the rhythm,’ said Ms Byrne. The choir rehearses weekly on Monday evenings at The Gap Uniting Church. New members are welcome! If you would like to join the choir or would like more information, please visit https://serenatasingers.org. au/

The Beauty Behind Bulbs

from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

Bulbs is the topic of guest speakers Kevin and Carol Larson at the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meeting on the 5th September at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. Not all plants considered to be growing from bulbs are truly bulbous e.g. the gladiolus ‘bulb’ is a corn. Also, ranunculi and anenomes grow from corns. Another example is the dahlia ‘bulb’ which is really a tuber. Bulbs are distinguished by their shape which is like an elongated onion. There are varieties to suit all seasons, but Spring excels with Daffodils, Tulips, Hyacinths and Hippeastrums, that all produce many colourful displays. Once established, bulbs can be considered as plants that do not require a lot of attention. Kevin and Carol will share their expertise about growing bulbs, which can be saved to grow from year to year. We are in the last month of winter and the garden is almost ready to burst into spring displays. Keep a check on the lawn for Bindi plants! Small patches may be removed by hand or they can be sprayed with a weed killer that won't kill your lawn. Once the prickles appear, it's too • Your local resident late. Hanging baskets or potted painting company plants may need attention now Servicing Brisbane’s • and it is a good time to repot northside for over 10yrs them with a good quality potting • All domestic & mix that contains a slow release commercial works fertiliser. HOROSCOPES

By Missy Rivers, Local Spiritual Psychic Medium & Teacher

GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 COMMUNICATION IS KEY! How you communicate will continue to influence all areas of life and levels of your success. Welcome news of a change to circumstances early August may ask you to re-evaluate your plan for the year. A risk socially will pay off in a wonderful connection.

CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 23 With Leo in your chart this month, following the urge to move and reprioritize your finances will be a good choice. Control the impulse purchases for non-essential items mid month and avoid over spending. Feeling especially comfortable at home will provide a renewed sense of belonging. LEO Jul 23 - Aug 23 Happy Birthday! The planets align this

month supporting you to find your path. This month affords you the opportunity to do some soul searching and lay the foundations for the next stage of your life. A relationship tension will be resolved by the end of the month. Stick to your budget.

VIRGO Aug 23 - Sept 23 The hibernation is over! By midAugust you’ll be out of your ‘isolation’ phase and moving toward much happier times. The second half of this year will show you a much better time than the first half. Communication with your closest relationship may feel off but persevere for progress and understanding LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 23 Your time being occupied by others will be given back to you by mid-month. A flow of positive energy is ushered in by your willingness to compromise in the personal arena, however where there is a joint venture in question, you’ll go down swinging. Feed your desire for freedom.

SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 22 The New Moon in Leo on the 1st August brings with it a long overdue recognition and ‘return’ on your time and effort in your professional life. If you’re prepared

than this is the moment you’ve been waiting for, move forward with confidence and trust your judgment, Success awaits. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 22 A choice will be pressing on your mind this month, Study or Travel? Unfortunately, due to Saturn’s influence, any pursuits in these areas are linked with obligation rather than pleasure. Work will frustrate you for a spell, but now is the time to play nice with others. Take charge of overdue health matters. . CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan 20 Adopting a new approach with a joint financial matter or property will be rewarded. Obtaining more money may not be the answer. Instead, this month pushes you to think outside the box for solutions. Self-discipline is vital for work life. Parents, brace for challenges with your children.

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 A new beginning is imminent

with your partner or closest relationship. The New Moon in Leo delivers you a clean slate moving forward, despite it feeling heavier. A move or change to home circumstances will come about. Being inflexible will not be well received by others. PISCES Feb 18 - Mar 20 Light may be shed on a lingering health matter giving you information on how to proceed. Unfortunately, increased requirements with little to no increase recognition at work will be around for the duration of August. Whilst the going may be tough during this period, your perseverance will pay off long term. ARIES Mar 20 - Apr 20 A new and exciting energy in your life will bring forward opportunities in many forms, this may surprise you, but don’t hesitate, this is what you’ve been asking for. Be bold and open to possibilities to make your mark. Keeping an eye on your finances will benefit greatly this month.

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 21 With Mars influencing your sign now and until Feb 2020, you will find yourself more determined and focused than ever. Use this force to produce positive outcomes. Caution- being insensitive to other’s needs may flare up old issues, so tread carefully. Additional responsibility for domestic matters will increase and feel heavy.

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic

This article follows on from last month’s where the difficulty in finding the right partner or any at all, was the subject in question. One of the exercises developed in the 1980’s was to write a list of the qualities, attributes etc. that your ideal partner would have. The construct of this was based on theories about the laws of manifestation - what you focus on is what you attract. The same principle is described in the movie ‘The Secret.’ Now for those of us who took that idea up and went flat out with our affirmations we did so, often disappointingly so, to no avail. The reason for our failure in this regard is to do with how our unconscious thought patterning can be running us. You may be desperately wanting something to happen because of a whole host of fears/anxieties about what will happen if it does not, eg ‘I have to get that job,’ ‘I will get that job,’ ‘I am the best for that job,’ etc…….. because I fear that if I don’t, we won’t be able to pay the mortgage, I will be seen as a failure, my wife will leave me etc. etc. What’s the most dominant/strongest body of thought here, fear or positive belief in self? Only you can assess that by taking note of the frequency and intensity of the feelings these thoughts generate. The great majority of the time, we are run by our unconscious thought patterns. Making the unconscious conscious and being mindful of this is what real change is about. The basis of this understanding is behind the development of many recent energy therapies. They are useful strategies to have in your self help arsenal. E.F.T. (Emotional Freedom Technique) is one of them. It addresses and works with our mind’s ‘Bi Polar’ nature to negate or lessen the effect of self destructive and obsessive thought patterns. With these ideas in mind we go back to that ideal partner list and how we can use it to check out our self worth and ways we can go about improving that. It is more a question of that old saying of ‘what you give out is what you get back’, rather than wishful thinking. To begin with, list everything you can think of to do with character, values, qualities, would like and must haves etc. (A client I asked to do this, handed me her list along with the comment of ‘well, I just want God’) See what you can up with! Then go through the list and check off which ones you would put under the heading of ‘Shopping List’ or ‘Real Values List.’ The Shopping List is what I call ego based. For example ‘Has to be hot’ – because if she/he isn’t my friends will think I’m

a loser. In other words, for this person to be suitable for you, they have to give something to you to make you feel better about yourself. That is a self worth issue – what you are really thinking is that you’re not good enough to stand on your own. This is where being ‘too fussy’ is about a lack of self worth. In contrast your real values list is about things you value of themselves. The value or characteristic does not have a condition on it, eg honesty, because being honest is the right thing to do, not because I will get into trouble . Not because someone is watching and will think, I am crap if I am not. The action/value stands on its own. As you are going through each item on your list and deciding which list to put it in, write down your thoughts and feeling of each one. If you have strong feelings, see if you can locate where the feeling is in your body ie. head, throat, chest, solar plexus, gut etc. You will need this information to work with the next step, which I will go through in the next article. from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER

As your local state member, I’m here to represent you and am always available to listen and hear about the issues that matter. Over the past months, I’ve had the opportunity to catch up with many locals at the numerous events around the area: Clean Up Australia Day, Trivia Nights, Charity Days, Trophy Presentations, Anzac Day Services, School Visits and many more. Thanks to everyone who was involved in these events and I look forward to doing it all again next year. If you would like to catch up with me, you might like to drop into one of my upcoming mobile offices. For more details, visit my website www.timmander.com.au

New SES Depot

I’m proud to support the new SES depot at James Drysdale Reserve in Bunya. It was thirty years ago when the Pine Rivers SES started to serve our local community and I want to thank the locals who have volunteered and given their dedication and support to help those in need. The brand new purpose built facility has opened its doors and is now fully operational. This major project has included an administration and training building with an adjoining shed, LI VAC MITED ANC IES

I continue to be contacted by residents and businesses about the new waste tax. Despite the Government’s assurances Queensland families will not face the cost of this levy, this waste tax will be passed on to residents whenever they hire a skip bin, do a renovation or build a new home. Every customer of every business will have to pay more. People have had to wait up to two hours at Bunya tip just to reach the weigh bridge. This is outrageous! My colleagues and I will continue to ask the Government the hard questions about this tax - particularly the guarantee that it would not inconvenience Queenslanders or cost them more.

Dickson News

from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON

Many of the veterans I met at the launch spoke of the importance of their dogs and the positive difference their assistance dog had made. I know the new bunker in Strathpine will help Young Diggers support many more veterans and their families right across our community.

Heroes of Dickson

I am interviewing locals who have done amazing things for our community with my ‘Heroes of Dickson’ video series. You can catch up with all the previous heroes I’ve interviewed by heading to the videos section on my Facebook page at www. facebook.com/peterduttonmp If there’s someone you would like to nominate as a hero of Dickson, please get in touch, my contact details are below.

Income Tax Relief Officially opening the new Young Diggers bunker in Strathpine with Young Diggers founders John Jarratt and Peter Walters.

Young Diggers Launch

Recently, I had the pleasure of officially opening the new Bunker for Young Diggers in Strathpine. Young Diggers was founded by John Jarratt and Peter Walters, who initially wanted to help support the troops based at Enoggera by connecting them to available services. Their vision and dedication has seen Young Diggers grow into a nationwide organisation supporting thousands of veterans. Young Diggers is a veteran’s support organisation with a unique twist – as well as providing welfare support services and other assistance; they help veterans train Assistance Dogs. Assistance Dogs have been known to help prevent suicides, improve mental health and wellbeing and assist veterans adjusting back to normal life after returning from deployment.

Many of you will have already lodged your tax return for the 2018-19 financial year and the good news is that you could receive up to $1080 back as a result of our tax cuts package. As a key election commitment, we passed our tax relief package on the very first sitting week of the new Parliament with the support of the crossbench. Up to 10 million Australians will receive tax relief under our plan. Labor, unfortunately did not support our tax cuts package. The average worker on $60,000 per year would be $15,000 worse off over the next decade under Labor. Our tax cuts will stimulate growth and help the economy and will mean you have more money back in your pocket after you submit your tax return this year. To see how much tax back you might be eligible for please visit http://lbr.al/lrbd

Save the Date - Seniors Expo 2019

One of my initiatives after I was first elected in 2001 was to host a Dickson Seniors Expo. There was a lack of information for seniors in our community and I wanted to provide opportunities for seniors in the local community to access information, activities and services available. The Expo was such a success, we decided to continue it and this year will be the 16th Annual Dickson Seniors Expo. It is always a fun event and provides seniors with an opportunity to meet local organisations and business who work with seniors, there will also be plenty of entertainment, guest speakers and much more. The Expo will be held at the Strathpine Community Centre off Mecklem Street. Entry is free. Organisations and businesses interested in holding a stall at the Expo can contact my office on 3205 9977 for booking information. DATE: Monday 2 September and Tuesday 3 September

Drop in to my next Mobile Office

I am coming up to 2500 visits in my mobile office and helped thousands of residents with local issues. If you see me out and about with my caravan, please drop in. Alternatively, you can drop by my office on Gympie Road in Strathpine during business hours, call me on 3205 9977 or visit peterdutton.com.au to get in touch.

Amendment Notice: July ‘Coffee That Cares’

www.hillsecho.com

The Hills Echo would like to make an amendment to the ‘Coffee That Cares’ story on page 5 of the July 19 edition. The article stated that Patricks Road State School (PRSS) donated their first coffee cart to Ferny Grove State School (FGSS). However, PRSS actually sold the coffee cart to FGSS for $6000 in order to raise funds for their second cart. You can read this article online at www.hillsecho.com/ coffee-that-cares/

National Tree Day

On Saturday 27 July, I joined Men of The Trees (MOTT) and Dera Sacha Sauda, who planted over 500 trees and shrubs and 100 grasses in Keryn Place, Kings Park, Keperra. It was a pleasure to provide morning tea for over 40 volunteers who support the message of MOTT by ‘healing the earth by planting trees.’ This site off Mungarie Street is one of several sites across the ward. New sites for SAM are in Ashgrove and Keperra and will be scheduled for installation once community consultation is completed. A permanent ‘slow down’ LED sign on Conavalla Street approaching Lislane Street, Ferny Grove has been approved for installation. them available in all weather – both to the school and local sporting groups. With over $50 million being invested by the Palaszczuk Government in local schools in this term alone the future looks bright for our next generation.

New SES Facility

The Arana Hills SES now has a new home at the Bunya SES Hub. The facility is now operational awas constructed by the Moreton Bay Regional Council with the assistance of the Palaszczuk Government through a $1 million Local Government Grant. Our local SES volunteers have served our community for many decades without complaint and in the most difficult of circumstances. It is high time the SES was able to work out of a headquarters which will provide a safer workspace and larger scope for training. Palaszczuk Government Invests In Local Education

Education Minister Grace Grace was on hand recently to inspect the new construction of the Centre of Excellence at the Ferny Grove State High School. Executive Principal John Schuh and newly elected P&C President Cameron Wearing, were pleased to show the Education Minister and I, just some of what the new investments will mean to students at the school next year. Mitchelton State High School is also the beneficiary of heavy new investment by the state government with plans now complete for a new Information Technology Design Hub. This is in addition to hall refurbishments, canteen upgrades and coverage for the new double basketball courts to make

TOD Update

I have been advised by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) that a decision by the Brisbane City Council (BCC) on the Development Application for the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) at Ferny Grove Railway Station is expected in the next couple of months. I have been lobbying TMR for increased parking on stations along the Ferny Grove Line to cater for the increased demand in rail passengers. With the new Monday to Friday timetable including the addition of 44 extra services on the Ferny Grove Line - patronage is likely to increase again. The Palaszczuk Government allocated $9.1 million in the 2017 budget to increase parking by hundreds of car spaces as part of the larger $100 million TOD being developed by Honeycombes Property Group. Honeycombes is keen to begin construction as soon as practicable if and when BCC approval is given for the Development application for the site.
