Pine Hills Lightning Scores a new Field of Dreams!

Works on a new baseball field at James Drysdale Reserve are underway, thanks to a $3.3million commitment from the Moreton Bay Regional Council, in its 2017/18 budget released last month.

The new field, to be located behind the current main diamond Pine Hills Lightning A Grade team with left field fence, has been on the drawing board for a number Teeballers of years, and will now become a reality. In addition to the new diamond, the project will also include dugouts, field lighting, irrigation, 38 carparks, amenities and access road. Preliminary earthworks are already underway and the project is expected to be completed in late 2018, weather permitting. James Drysdale Reserve is home to Pine Hills Lightning Baseball Club junior and senior teams and the addition of the new diamond will now enable the club to hold junior State Titles and National Tournaments. Pine Hills Baseball Club president Simon Tame, said there had been a lot of work done behind the scenes by previous committee members and Moreton Bay Regional Council. ‘With Baseball back in the Olympics in 2020, a new field will help provide another opportunity for the children of the area to be involved in sports and maybe one day join the other three club representatives who played for Australia this year,’ said Pine Hills Baseball Club president Simon Tame. The club is looking to expand on its Lightning Cup Rookie Ball initiative for children aged 8 - 12 years in which they play in-house 1.5 hour games during the week. They are expecting more teams this year with the club delivering over 25 baseball ‘Come ‘n Try’ days in the local schools. Head down to James Drysdale Reserve on the 12th August for their ‘Come and Try’ baseball day from 10 am to 2pm. It will be a fantastic opportunity for the kids to try their hand at this great sport.

Local Hardware Store Closes

At the end of July, the doors closed on Ferny Hills’ hardware store for the final time. Nestled under the block of shops on Ferny Way, opposite the Telstra Exchange, this hardware store has served the local area since 1968. It was first operated by Mr and Mrs Jones who sold to the Spencer family. It was then known as ‘Spencer Hardware’ and continued to trade under this name when owned by John and Jackie Findlay-Bisset. It then came under the True Value Hardware banner. The next owners, Bruce and Annette Anderson traded for five years before the present owners Keith and Barbara McGhee took control in 2002. Sadly, the progession will now cease and the convenience of this local hardware haven will be missed by both home handymen, local schools, tradesmen and anyone seeking advice and solutions to a myriad of plumbing, gardening, carpentry and assorted ‘needs-fixing’ problems. Retirement is now beckoning for the owners and Keith’s friend George who has been an invaluable assistant behind the counter supporting Keith and Barbara when trade was busy, especially at weekends. George no doubt will fill any spare time chasing fish up north inOnline his favourite fishing haunts. Tickets: https:// Keith and Barbara have enjoyed a loyal following and know www.eventbrite.com.au/e/ many residents and tradies bybrews-bites-and-beatsfirst name. They are retiring reluctantly. tickets-34528781515

‘Even with the opening of Bunnings at Keperra, we were confident that we could still service a niche market for the smaller shopper,’ said Keith. ‘But we weren’t prepared to resign an extended lease. A short term lease was not available so we were left with the only option of closing the door.’ Barbara, Keith and George have enjoyed serving local customers and providing advice when needed. ‘We are very grateful for the support that has been shown to our hardware business,’ said Barbara. ‘We thank our customers for their continued loyalty. We leave, having made many friends.’ The convenience of this hardware store and the expert, friendly advice will be sorely missed. It is the end of a little chapter in the retail history of Ferny Hills.

Queensland Junior State Cup Wrap Up

Arana Touch is very proud of the seven teams who participated in the 2017 Junior State Cup in Hervey Bay from 6th to 8th July.

Our teams play against some very strong associations who are well established and are made up of players from large regional cities/towns. Overall we had nine wins and two draws. U14 Boys had four wins and three losses, narrowly missed making quarter final. What a great eye opener to the skill level in Queensland. Contending with bigger and older touch football associations, our club Arana competed with improvement throughout the carnival. The girls were a bit nervous to start the competition as the opposition came out hard and fast, providing insight into the high levels of touch that are present at this level. As the carnival progressed the girls got more confident and picked up their intensity providing a more competitive environment. Although the carnival is very competitive it still provides a positive environment for all players, as the club bonding opportunities both, at the ground and at the accommodation added to the kids enjoyment. Special thanks goes to our coaches, managers and parents for the effort and enthusiasm they showed our players, we couldn’t have done it without them. Also to all our referees, as we cannot enter teams in these events without a referee per team. Let There Be Light.. on Field #3

Local Keperra sporting field #3 on Hanran St, operated by West Arana Hills Rugby League Football Club (WAHRLFC), recently received a major upgrade with the installation of 4 new lighting poles, costing over $90,000. This upgrade was made possible through a Community Grant for $35,000 with the $55,000 balance being funded by Arana Leagues Club. The previous lights on the field did not provide adequate lighting meaning that teams had to limit their training or move to the Football Club primary field or field number two which created congestion with multiple teams training and playing. These new lights will allow more local sporting teams to properly make use of the field. Currently, the field is used by WAHRLFC, the Arana Touch Football Club and the Waratahs Softball Club. The Football Club and Waratahs Softball Club use the field for their training, and the Touch Football Club use the field for their training and playing during the season. ‘We’re very pleased to be able to assist these local sporting teams,’ noted Arana Leagues Club General Manager, Joe Kelly. ‘Our Community Contribution Fund has donated over $6.3 million into the local community since 2003 and is dedicated to assisting local sporting, charitable and community associations as well as local primary schools.’

SENSATIONAL SAMFORD! Back To Nature

At The Lifestyle Centre

The Lifestyle Centre is situated on nine acres in beautiful Samford Valley. The Centre comprises a nursery, gift shop offering unique homewares and a fabulous cafe serving Toby‘s estate coffee, breakfast and lunch. There is also a day spa, photographer, pilates and yoga centre and our newest editions are the Herdz Horse and Rider outlet and a yarn shop. The owners of the Lifestyle Centre have a farming background and had a dream to incorporate a paddock walk to share their love for animals with children and the young at heart. This dream is now a reality and members of the public can now take a stroll through the grounds where a variety of tame farm animals live peacefully. The owners operate a rotational cell grazing with different type of animals moving from paddock to paddock by which the soil is enriched and the grazing coverage improved. The cattle and mini master sheep are well liked, however the Australian miniature goats are the most popular with their cheeky bleating for some yummy goat food. They are true entertainers! In addition, the team at the Lifestyle Centre are very excited to see the arrival of their first miniature donkey Frankie who will be arriving from Victoria very shortly. The walk takes around 10-15 minutes to complete and there are many seating areas under beautiful trees and overlooking

Vacancies In New Prep Class

Samford Valley Steiner School has opened an extra Prep class this year to meet the needs of the local community for Steiner education. The school has a mission to grow and develop Steiner Education and make it as available as possible to all those who are seeking it. The new group for 5-6 year olds has been created specifically for the group of children waiting on an unusually large and long-term wait list. Prep parents, Matt and Nicole are very happy with the new class. ‘We have been so pleased with our experience at Samford Valley Steiner School. We were really drawn to the school for its nurturing approach to education. We feel very confident that our daughter will blossom here and develop a love of school and lifelong learning.’ Samford Steiner strives to manifest an important social vision i.e. to provide a living education for social renewal. Our intention is far greater than to simply educate children for a career or a job. Rather we strive to create an environment within which the children can unfold their own inner potential to serve their own destinies and create change in the world. The school whole-heartedly believes that our modern world desperately needs this education and that we should strive to provide the opportunity for as many families as possible that are seeking Steiner Education for their children to access it; this will benefit us all.

Given the correct conditions, orchids are not hard to grow. There are specific actions to take when repotting them and if the instructions are followed, success is assured. Margaret and Les have a wealth of information to share with those at the meeting. August is the month to give attention to hanging baskets and indoor plants as it is a good time to repot them using a good quality potting mix. Also fortnightly applications of a liquid fertilizer will keep the plants lush and green. If you like to grow summer flowering annuals and vegetables from seed, it’s time to start sowing the seed. Recycled clear plastic containers for cakes or fruit bought at the supermarket make good mini seed trays, as long as drainage holes are made around the base of them. Aphids are active on the new growth of plants now. A pure soap spray will provide an effective control, or gently squashing them between your fingers is another way to get rid of them. The meeting commences immediately after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. and visitors and new members are most welcome. The hall which is situated at the corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets, Enoggera, is close to public transport and is accessible by wheel chair. Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic

Relationship Dynamics Our Challenge to Growth

Robin Botic

All relationships are based on sets of interaction. These interactions can display observable dynamics in the way each partner habitually relates to each other. We experience both positive and negative interactions. Problematic negative interactions have a mutually held unconscious negative self belief that drives the system. The pattern of any dynamic takes time to establish and unless a couple has good conflict resolution and communication skills the difference is felt to intensify until it reaches breaking point. A classic and very common dynamic is one termed ‘distancer/ pursuer.’ Behaviour expression of this particular dynamic is where one partner (not always the woman) complains there is a lack of attention and support. The emotional boundaries have changed from the ‘in love phase’ (six months – two years approximately) from one where boundaries dissolve, similarities are thought, perceived to predominate and there is a more enmeshed state of interaction. This is part and parcel of relationship process. However, the pursuer whose emotional comfort is conditional on more enmeshed boundaries perceives this shift, feels anxiety and fears this process of disengagement as withdrawal from them and assumes less attention is about loss of love. The pursuer’s often clamorous attempt to regain the safety of the “in love” status quo push the distancer even further away. The distancer is equally discomforted often reporting feelings of being smothered, crowded, hassled, can never make the partner happy, there is no space allowed for them. Each feels the other is at fault. The more one pushes the more the resistance increases and round and round it goes with no resolution and more recrimination. Liken this to two opposing force fields pushing against each other, each feeling the energetic resistance of the other and trying to defend their space. The defense however, because of the behavioural strategies employed, is often perceived more like an attack and fear of loss and a lack of acceptance is felt. The love and connection each wants to experience is subsumed beneath a morass of conflicting emotions. Unraveling this is about learning to tolerate difference, to equitably and mutually accommodate this difference in the relationship. It is in having the courage to honestly face the challenge to ourselves from the other that we grow. It is not easy. C

The cry ‘if you loved me you would’ is not about love but emotional blackmail. It is about us preferring our partner to change rather than having to do it ourselves. Each couple has their own unique twist and the ego is very manipulative and persuasive at this point. It will find all manner of ways to justify its expectation that the other should accommodate it. There are strategies and skills that can be used to support us in understanding and dealing with these challenges. It’s not easy, the hardest work you will ever do, your partner is your tool to growth. It is about what you will do for love. Its outcome is the realization of every increasing depth of intimacy and selfhood with concurrent increases in self acceptance, understanding and the peace and comfort of being content and at ease1 22/06/2017 with yourself. 2017-07 - v1 (Qtr Page).pdf 12:03:21 PM This is what you are capable of. Giving to yourself and therefore to the other.

Out and About in The Gap Ward With Councillor Steven Toomey

Cr Toomey can be contacted at The Gap Ward Office on 3407 1900

Hello and Welcome to my new monthly column. You would have recently received Council’s 2017-2018 newsletter highlighting some of the projects that will be delivered this financial year. I have listed the complete budget on my webpage www.steventoomey.com.au This year funding has been provided to complete the process of the Ferny Grove-Upper Kedron Neighbourhood Plan Amendments. The formal submission process was completed on 13 July 2017. Council will respond to all the submitters and publish this report on the Council webpage www.brisbane. qld.gov.au. The draft Plan will then be sent to the Queensland Government for a state interest review and approval to gazette the Plan as part of Brisbane City Plan 2014 and guide future development in the plan area. I would like to thank all the residents who took part in this process, especially the Community Planning Team who freely gave their time over a number of months to represent the community during the neighbourhood planning process. Since becoming Councillor, I have been attending the P&F’s and P&C’s at the local primary and high schools. I have been very impressed with the high level of engagement from parents who are working extremely hard to ensure their schools are well resourced and that students gain the very best from their education. Over the next three years I will be identifying connecting footpath links to allow students to travel to school safely whilst relieving congestion on our local roads. It is important to have safe access to local amenities and bus services. If you would like a footpath scoped in your part of the ward please contact me at the ward office. I am continuing to lobby for better public transport connections through the ward and will be presenting a petition when Council resumes calling on the State Government to fund these vital transport links in Upper Kedron. Earlier this year I met with local residents to discuss two park upgrades in Upper Kedron. Honeyeater Park has been identified as a new park for the area and Kingfisher Park will undergo some park improvements. A landscape architect within council scoped some initial ideas that were presented to the community in Honeyeater Park. I have met recently with my parks manager to discuss your feedback and to allocate funding from this year’s budget to begin the construction of the new play area into Honeyeater Park. We will be incorporating your ideas for the first stage of the new park and I look forward to meeting you again with the plans. Notification will be via my ward facebook page ‘TheGapWard’ and I will be letterbox dropping the surrounding area. This is the first stage of developing this park into a local asset for the whole community to enjoy. Kedron Picnic Grounds has received a new park upgrade and just recently the shade cover was installed to complete the project. As part of my election commitment I will be installing some adult exercise equipment into this area in the future. Last year funding was allocated from the Ward Footpath and www.hillsecho.com

Parks Trust Fund to move and install new cricket nets in Ferny Grove Sports Ground. I am very pleased this work has commenced and will be completed in time for the summer cricket season. I regularly hold community corners in Upper Kedron, Ferny Grove and Keperra. I look forward to hearing what is important to you and discuss future work planned for the ward. Don’t forget to bring your latest rates notice with you to collect your two free plants voucher. Community Corners – Saturday 19 August 2017 • Ferny Grove Shopping Village – 12-1.30pm • Keperra Picnic Grounds – 2-3pm • Upper Kedron Dog Off Leash Area 4-5.30pm

Everton News from your Member for Everton

TIM MANDER

Residents at a school bus stop in Everton Hills

Everton Hills Bus Services

Recently I sponsored a petition to the Deputy Premier to request better bus services in the Everton Hills area. We had a great response with 525 local residents signing the petition. Unfortunately the Deputy Premier’s response has not provided any positive news. She advised that there is no provision to consider better services due to the circuitous road design and the width of the roads, which she claims does not allow for bus stops to be built nor safe travelling for buses. This is a puzzling response and seemingly inconsistent when there is already numerous bus stops for the school bus run 906 which travels through the area each day. I will continue to fight for better bus services in the Everton Hills area.

Latest Round of Gambling Grants

I congratulate three Hills groups for their success in the latest round of Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants. Honouring Our Veterans

Queensland is home to almost 50,000 veterans,

more than any other state in Australia. These veterans are not only a critical part of our history but they are key to our future and the LNP believes they deserve a policy that provides better services and more opportunities. If elected, an LNP Government will provide improved services, more opportunities and stronger representation for our retired servicemen and servicewomen in five key ways: 1. We will appoint a Minister for Veterans‘ Affairs 2. We will commit to a public service veterans target to increase the number of ex-ADF personnel working in the public service 3. We will appoint a senior representative in the public service as the Veterans Champion 4. We will also create a $2 million Veterans Honouring our veterans Tr a n s i t i o n G r a n t s Program, for ex-service and defence welfare organisations 5. We will make the Queensland Veterans‘ Advisory Council a permanent fixture. The LNP believes Queenslanders should be leading Australia in this area and that‘s why we‘re committed to doing more through the Honouring Our Veterans policy.

‘Get Online with MyGov’ Workshop

Nick Elston

For Ferny Grove

Arana Hills Library 18th August - 2pm - 3pm

Is the rising cost of living affecting you and your family?

Over the past six months, I have been door-knocking the Ferny Grove electorate. People have also been responding to my online survey and contacting me directly about the issues that matter to them. The biggest issue is the rising cost of living! I understand how financial pressures impact families because I have experienced it first-hand. I remember, as a teenager, the embarrassment of having to wear hand-me-down clothes that didn’t fit or runners held together with tape. These are superficial hardships compared to the anxiety and shame my parents felt at times when they had to choose paying the mortgage over paying for the school excursion. I understand that many families in the Ferny Grove electorate are doing it tough! Wage growth is stagnant but costs keep going up! The current Labor Member for Ferny Grove is a Minister in the Palaszczuk Government, which over the past two and half years has: 1. Increased Car Rego by $50 per year; 2. Increased Taxes by $200 per family per year; 3. Increased Electricity Prices on Households by $128 per year; 4. Increased Electricity Prices on Small Business by 11% which means fewer jobs; 5. Increased Electricity Prices on Farmers by 12% which means more expensive food; 6. Increased Water Rates. And now Labor’s Zero Net Emission pledge by 2050 will push some families and businesses to breaking point just so Labor can shore up Jackie Trad’s green vote in a marginal seat. I am very supportive of renewable energy, and I support the National Target of 23.5% by 2020, but a 50% target which hurts you is not acceptable to me, particularly when it means higher electricity prices, less job security and fewer job opportunities as businesses bail out of Queensland. I am committed to securing jobs across Queensland and building stronger families because I know what its like to struggle. That’s why I’m asking you to vote for me at the upcoming State Election, because I will always make cost of living pressures on families my top priority. www.hillsecho.com

Dickson News

from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON

One Year On

So often these days there’s a lot of ‘noise’ around politics which focusses on personalities and overlooks what’s actually getting done. Last month marked one year since the last election and I think if we look back a fair assessment would be that the Turnbull Government has delivered considerable benefits for our country. More than 230,000 new jobs have been created in that year and in my portfolio of Immigration we abolished a visa stream for foreign workers to ensure Australians have first priority for jobs. We’ve provided three million small businesses with tax cuts including – 13,000 in Dickson – which will help them grow and re-invest. We’re working to guarantee affordable and reliable energy and provided pensioners and others on government support programmes (20,000 in Dickson) with an Energy Assistance payment of up to $125 in recent weeks to help with rising bills. There’s record investment in infrastructure projects to grow the economy including works on the Bruce Highway in our region, record funding for our schools and the National Disability Insurance Scheme will now be fully funded. A dedicated fund to guarantee Medicare for future generations has been established while funding for Medicare, hospitals and life-saving medicines has increased substantially.

These are just some of the achievements of the past year. Of course keeping the nation safe is the prime responsibility of Government and we’ve taken a range of measures to do just that. Given the world we live in where the threats to us collectively as a nation, to our businesses and to individuals including through terrorism, cyber-attacks and international organised crime gangs; the Prime Minister recently decided it would be in the nation’s best interests to draw our domestic intelligence, policing and border agencies together under one Minister. It will in effect establish a department similar to Britain’s Home Office titled in Australia, Home Affairs, and it will be my job as Home Affairs Minister-designate to oversee this important change within the Government to better meet the threats we face. They are illustrated by these stark statistics – just ten years ago only six people had been convicted of plotting terror attacks in Australia. In the last three years there have been 70 people arrested after five attacks with another 12 thwarted by our agencies. Strong borders are a vital piece of our national security and Operation Sovereign Borders which has stopped the boats marked a significant milestone late last month – it’s now been three years since a people smuggler’s boat has reached Australia.

I am delighted to announce Round Three of the Stronger Communities Programme is now open! Grants for younger veterans

Our veterans have done so much for our country and it is crucial we support them when they leave the defence forces. The Supporting Younger Veterans (SYV) grants program recognises the importance of the transition phase for Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel. $1 million is available for projects which build community support and service the unique needs of younger veterans transitioning to civilian life. Applications are invited for a range of initiatives including mentoring, team building, selfimprovement, and creative activities which promote social inclusion and peer-to-peer support for younger veterans. The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

24 new body-worn cameras for Ferny Grove Police

In the coming months, Ferny Grove Police officers will be better protected as part of stage two of the Palaszczuk Government’s state-wide roll out of body-worn cameras. These cameras will be a significant benefit to Ferny Grove Police, and the community can feel confident knowing that local officers are equipped with evidence-gathering technology. This major advancement for Police delivers on the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to keeping our frontline officers safe. More than $6 million over three years has been allocated to provide 5,100 body worn cameras to frontline police men and women in a total of 168 policestations throughout the state. Frontline police including general duties officers and specialist police such as road policing command officers, tactical crime units, rapid-action and patrols groups benefited from stage one of the roll out which in stage two is now expanding across Queensland.

Following this year’s theme of ‘Keeping Safe and Secure in the Digital World’, students are challenged to apply their coding skills to create a ‘digital solution’, such as a game, map, animation or app to encourage their peers to be cyber safe. Applications are open for students in years 5 to 10 to take up the challenge to develop skills in coding. I believe it’s vital to equip young Queenslanders with the skills needed to be leaders and innovators of the future, and take advantages of the opportunities afforded in the changing digital economy. An expert panel of industry and education experts will help select two individual and one team entry from each category to attend an awards ceremony at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre in November. All eligible students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. I look forward to seeing students from schools in the Ferny Grove electorate highlighting the importance of cyber-safety. For more information, please refer to https:// goo.gl/csY5ss. Applications close on 13 September 2017.

Queensland students to unlock the code to a bright future

Recently, the Premier and Education Minister Kate Jones launched the Premier’s Coding Competition, a new coding competition for Queensland school students which will uncover our emerging digital creators and innovators and drive a new focus on digital learning.

Arana Netball News

Most teams playing in the Downey Park Netball competition played their last fixture on 22nd July, with those in 6-team competitions having their final game on 29th July. Half of Arana Netball’s teams had looked poised to proceed to final playoffs for some time, and these were all able to maintain their positions in the top half of their points tables to finish the season. All other Arana teams have played well throughout the season, including Arana 11 to Arana 14, the non-competitive teams who, although not playing off in finals, have learnt so much through the season. Special thanks goes to all the coaches who have given of their time, energy, and knowledge throughout the season. Other dates of importance coming up for Arana Netball are Grand Final day on 12th August, the A.G.M. on 21st August, and Trophy presentations on Friday, 8th September. The A.G.M. is at the Hills District Community Centre, in the Arana Sports meeting room, beginning at 7.30pm. With several Committee members also indicating unavailability next year, new faces are especially important so that Arana Netball Club can continue to operate effectively and serve the local community. For further information about Committee positions, or on any other matters relating to Arana Netball Club, email the Club at arananetballclub@gmail.com or phone the President on 0432 216 407. THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN THUMBS DOWN to the continuing collapse of Qld construction companies. In what appears a huge growth period they are either unbelievably mismanaged or choked by union dominance. Subbies lose out but I bet the banks don’t.

THUMBS UP to dual citizen pollies being sacked. To date they are all Senators so nobody will notice they are even missing.

THUMBS DOWN to the NRL. They consistantly allow their game to be brought into disrepute by not ensuring refs send thug players off. Knocking good players out of the game is very old school and lots of would be footy mums are watching carefully.

THUMBS UP to the end of the Super Rugby season. The pain of watching The Reds was unbearable. If they were fined $50 for each dropped ball, ghost pass or missed tackle, the players would be bankrupted.

THUMBS DOWN to Aussie cricketers on

strike for more money. Sorry fellas, the game belongs to the people so move on. Wonder if they would play for dollars for runs and wickets only?
