Bloomin' Beautiful Local Winning Gardens Wow! What a year for the 50th Hills District & Bunya Garden Competition.
In past years, possibly due to difficult seasonal conditions, the competition has had a very low level of entries. However, thanks to the wonderful gardeners who put in a huge effort in 2018, there has been a massive 36 entries this year. This is a record number for the competition in the past 15 years. Some entrants were the ‘old and bold’ who had stopped entering the competition but supported the committee for their 50th year and 14 new gardeners who also got behind the 50th celebrations. The increased number of entries did cause a bit of panic and meant the wonderful volunteer judges had to work an extra day to get through all the gardens. In addition, the amazing standard of entries made it very difficult for judges Noel & Heather Prior to decide on the final winners. 50 Years of garden competition has seen many different sights. The committee has tried novelty letterboxes, bus tours, good neighbour gardens, tidy streets and even had schools, churches and commercial premises in the competition. In 1995 Bunya became part of this competition bringing acreage properties into the judging. Drought conditions saw the introduction of waterwise gardens in 2001 and it is still strongly involved in the competition. A huge thanks from the committee must go to all the entrants over the years who have kept this competition alive and well in The Hills District & Bunya. The support of the wonderful sponsors has made entering all the sweeter for these gardeners who have taken away thousands of dollars in prizes over the years. Visit the Ferny Hills Progress Association’s website www.fhpa.org.au for more information or follow them on Facebook www.facebook.com/ HDBGC Turn to pages 4 and 5 for a list of the Prize Winning Gardens and photos from the competition.

Ferny Helps Out Our Aussie Farmers

13 Park Road, Ferny Hills 0408 510 001
Ferny Grove State High Schools’ Student Representative Council (SRC) decided to hold an ‘out of uniform’ day dedicated to Aussie farmers with all funds being donated directly to Rural Aid Australia.
The SRC began discussions with Ferny’s Agriculture department and put a farm themed day together. Students and staff were encouraged to dress in farm themed clothing. Tours to Ferny’s farm were held during lunchtime where students had the opportunity to have ‘selfies’ with some of the animals. The farmyard visit proved extra special as one of Ferny’s sheep ‘Mary’ gave birth that morning to twin lambs, a boy and a girl who were just in time for the selfies! They could not have timed it better. Ferny’s SRC commented on the community spirit that was felt in the lead up and during the event, so many people got on board and dressed in their farm gear including the staff. They couldn’t be happier with the final amount of monies being raised in the sum of $4,024.85. Ferny’s SRC expressed how proud they were to have been able to raise this amount of funds for the farmers in need right now.

Brisbane Tramway Museum October Update
September proved to be a busy time for the museum, with their Night Run on the 28th followed by the AGM on the 29th. The Night Run commemorated the fire at Paddington Depot back in 1962 when Brisbane lost 65 trams. The event was very popular and visitors were able to ride in six trams ranging in age from a young 54 years to the oldest tram being 117 years old! The highlight of the night was the commissioning of the new sub-station that was turned on by local Member for Ferny Grove, Hon Mark Furner MP. The new sub-station replaces one which was installed ‘way back’and was using technology dating from the time when trams were first introduced into Brisbane. The new sub-station was made possible thanks largely to a grant from the Queensland Government.
Snakes Alive!
On Thursday 21st September Moreton Bay Regional Council hosted a meeting of Walk Organisers from the Heart Foundation Walking program at the Yuraba Conference Centre, which is part of the Kumbartcho Sanctuary in Eatons Hill. While the meeting was in progress, some curious visitors dropped by the conference centre to see what was going on. Not one, not two, not three, but four snakes. They lazily wound their way through the rafters and rails of the external veranda, before retreating into the bush. For more information and to find a Walking Group near you visit http://walking.heartfoundation.org.au/walking/
The AGM revealed that the museum is in good shape from all aspects. The same Board was re-elected, with Peter Hyde assuming the Presidency and Kevin Maizey taking on the role of Vice President. The museum’s next major event will take place in early December when they will commemorate the last tram journey through Adelaide Street. Services using Adelaide Street, including:– Enoggera – Chermside, Bardon - Stafford, Rainworth – Kalinga and Toowong – Grange were terminated in December 1968, with the final tram services finishing in April the following year. Further details of this commemoration will appear in next month’s edition of The Hills Echo. Regular Sunday afternoon services continue commencing at 12.30 pm and running through to 4pm. Charters for groups such as service clubs, schools, weddings, birthdays are available. Please phone 3351 1776 for more information and also for information on the Ferny Grove Mens’ Shed.

Horse Power With The Samford Museum
On Sunday 21st October, turn back the clock for a few hours with a day at Yangan near Warwick and watch the might and power of heavy horses and their handlers at work. This event showcases farming equipment from the 1800’s and 1900’s when horse power was really the power of the horse. Samford Museum is organizing a day trip to the event which raises money for charities. Please contact Geoff on 0417 610 983 for more information regarding the trip. A thrill for museum members in recent weeks has been the reuniting of two unidentified photos of a WW1 soldier with relatives, far from where the photos were donated. When the museum examined the photos, the word Longreach could be seen very faintly in pencil. We contacted a Longreach group and received a thrilling reply as to the soldier’s identity and that a family member is a current member of that Longreach society. This is just one of the highlights of membership of Samford Museum.

Advertorial
Home Construction To Commence at The Hills Residences Home construction will commence this month at Everton Hills’ most popular new address, The Hills Residences, with an on-site display home on track to open in early 2019.
Located on the corner of Bunya and Francis Roads in Everton Hills, this vibrant new residential development by Sunland Group will deliver a collection of architectural family terrace homes surrounding a large central park and adjoining preserved bushland. The first home release within The Hills Residences is more than 70% sold, with local downsizers and first home buyers moving quickly to secure their parkfront residences. Sunland Group Managing Director, Sahba Abedian, said the success of The Hills Residences demonstrated the inherent value of sophisticated architectural design and established amenity. ‘These homes represent the last evolution of Sunland’s awardwinning designs, featuring striking framed façades that create, as a whole, a well-defined collection of architectural art,’ he said. ‘Each double-storey home features a mix of three-bedroom and three-bedroom-plus-study designs, complete with a multipurpose room, two bathrooms, guest powder room, generous living areas, and quality finishes.’ Prices in this first home release start from $478,000. Mr Abedian said Everton Hills is a designated Next-Generation Suburb within the local government planning scheme due to

its proximity to existing and future retail centres, The landscaped central park at The Hills Residences employment, and community facilities. ‘The anticipated arrival of Park Lane later this year, and the planned redevelopment of North-West Private Hospital, will deliver considerable amenity to The Hills District,’ he said. ‘Everton Hills also adjoins the 630-hectare Bunyaville State Forest, renowned for its expansive nature trails and recreation spaces.’ Park Lane in Everton Park is one of south-east Queensland newest foodie destinations and will welcome some of the best restaurants, bars and cafes in Brisbane when it opens later this year, including Comuna, Corbett & Claude, 5 Boroughs, Neighbourhood Market Co, and Stellarossa. The Hills Residences Sales Suite is located at 10 Francis Road, Everton Hills and is open daily from 10am to 4pm. For more information, visit sunlandgroup.com.au/thehills or phone 1300 822 601.

Mitchelton Garden Club News
The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will meet on the 1st November at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street. Colin Phillips, the guest speaker will talk about Gardening for Busy People. Colin has worked for the Brisbane City Council and other departments where horticultural knowledge is required and landscaping has been involved in his life. These days families have many activities making demands on their time and this talk should help ease the pressure for gardeners, e.g. the installation of an automatic drip system could eliminate watering time; spraying insecticides could be avoided through companion planting; small flowering annuals could attract bees. There’s a wealth of knowledge to learn from Colin at this meeting.
October is the month to remove spent spring flowering annuals and replenish nutrients in the soil in readiness for summer vegetables. If you have space for pumpkin vines to run, plant some pumpkin seeds now and you should be rewarded with pumpkins in winter providing you pollinate the flowers. Male and female flowers occur on the one vine. To distinguish these, the male flower has a long stem and the female flower has a shorter stem with a small bulb-like structure at the base of the petals. To pollinate you can either break off a male flower, pull off the petals, then rub off the pollen which is on the anthers, to the stigma of the female flower, or you can use a small brush or end of a feather to brush the pollen from a male flower onto a female flower. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month. Meetings commence immediately after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. For more information please phone Pat, the president, on 3356 1256.

Arana Netball
Trophies Galore At Arana Netball
September was a fittingly exciting and busy month for Arana Netball Club to finish off the 2018 winter season. After Grand Finals to start off the month, team breakups, and preparations by the Committee, Trophy Night was held on 15th September, in time to wind things up before the commencement of school holidays. Grand Final day saw six Arana Netball teams competing. Of these, three finished the season as Runners-Up, but this was still a great effort by Arana 3 (Intermediate 6), Arana 7 (12Yrs Div. 7), and Arana 8 (11Yrs Div. 3), to progress so far. Arana 8, having been regraded twice, moving from Div. 6 to Div. 3 during the season, still almost took out the premiership, losing by only one point. Arana’s winning teams in the Grand Finals were Arana 1 (Opens Div. 6), also Minor Premiers; Arana 4 (Cadets 8), also Minor Premiers; and Arana 5 (Cadets 9) Minor Premiers. For all teams the end of season results represent a great effort and auger well for next year, when it is hoped to field more teams. At Trophy Night, all players were recognised for their efforts during the season, receiving trophies depending on where their team finished in competition. Other awards presented were for umpiring, rep. players, and for players length of service – for 5, 10, 15, and 20 years. For the last quite remarkable feat of 20 years continuous play for Arana, Jordan Lores received a special award. The following perpetual awardees were announced:Club Person Award: the Jackson family Val Little Award Sportsmanship Award: Brianna Streeter (Arana1)

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, Over three years ago I left a relationship that I’d been in for some 22 years. I had been unhappy with the relationship for some years. The final straw occurred for me when I needed surgery and recovery time of two months after that. This episode showed me just how selfish my partner was and how little he cared for me. My illness was all about how it affected him, and how now he had to do everything on our horse property by himself. He was abusive to my daughter and son when they came to care for me. They should not have been cooking my meals or doing my washing etc, but helping him do his work outside. He has always had hair-trigger anger. I liken it to living with a lit fuse. In the past though it was directed towards others and only became directed at me in the later years when I wouldn’t fall in or work towards his designated goals. He has never been physically violent towards me, but his anger and hostility plus my final realisation of the depth of his selfishness was too much for me. This is by way of

background. I am now engaged in on-going legal battles with him that are costing me financially and emotionally. He never gives up and seems to just want to find anything to get me in court to have a go at me or get more money off me. I put the money from my house, my savings into our property equally as he did. I gave up my high-earning job to support and work full time in his business venture. But when it became obvious that he was losing money I, plus his accountant, strongly counselled against further involvement. He ignored all our advice and continued on his sweet money-losing ways. I feel I have to stand up for my rights and not let him walk all over me, but I also just want peace, to get on with my life, and put him behind me. I’m afraid that this will go on forever, and I don‘t understand why he has to keep harassing me like this. Joan
Dear Joan, There appears to be two questions that you’re concerned with: how do I stand up for yourself and not get walked over; and why is your ex-partner behaving like this. Now in terms of the first question I’ll ask you who are you trying to prove to that you are not a walk-over: yourself, him, friends, family? In this case, for your real peace of mind, you are the only one that counts. I stress while you may have acceded to his demands in the past, for love, acceptance, peace or whatever, you have in the last few years, realised that this was gained at the expense of you giving up your needs for his. Not a fair or balanced relationship. Your understanding of this has led you to stand up for yourself, culminating in your leaving the relationship. I’m sure this was no easy thing for you to do. It would have taken strength and courage. For three years you have stood up for your rights. What you have to balance is how much it’s going to cost you. You‘ve proved you are not a walkover. What you have to work out for yourself with legal advice are the costs involved ( second opinions may be helpful). At this point I‘ll offer some suggestions as to why your expartner is doing this, and hopefully this may be helpful for you in your decision-making process. This is about power and control. Your ex-partner needs to win. You’ve rejected him by leaving and this is one of the ways he is holding on to and controlling you. In effect, he is punishing you for that. It’s face-saving on his part, if he scores, wins against you, the rejection doesn’t feel so bad. In relationships that have ended where power and control issues dominate, this is a common pattern of behaviour afterwards. There is no easy or rational adult-like settlement, no matter how hard you try. Peace often comes at a price. Sort out if the cost is worth it. What can you afford emotionally and financially. Legal fees can gobble up a lot of your assets and you may well need those for your future. Robin

7 Reasons Why Ladies Should Lift
There’s still a pretty clear gender divide at the gym. Men tend to stick to the weights section and grunt as loudly as possible, while the majority of women avoid weights at all costs and opt for the running machines instead. Of course, this isn’t to say that no women lift weights, but there is definitely an imbalance. Maybe women are less sure about how to use them, or are scared of looking too muscley. However, lifting weights will not magically turn a woman into the Incredible Hulk. The reason for this is that ladies typically have 10% less testosterone than men. Testosterone is the primary muscle building hormone, so females are going to struggle to gain large amounts of muscle mass. Here’s why this trend should change, and why more women should give pumping iron a go. Stronger bones and connective tissue – Lifting weights is load bearing exercise which helps strengthen bones. Maintaining strong and healthy bones lowers your risk of osteoporosis. Your metabolic rate will increase – For every pound of lean muscle mass gained, you burn an extra 50 calories per day. Decrease your risk of injury – Lifting weights helps develop stronger tendons, this gives your joints more support and stability through daily tasks. Boost stamina and energy levels – When you are stronger you have more energy for day to day tasks and you won’t get anywhere near as tired. Stress Relief – Exercise in general is a great way to manage stress. Researchers have consistently found that those who regularly strength train tend to manage
stress better and experience fewer adverse reactions to stressful situations as those who do not exercise. In addition, resistance-training studies on older adults show that moderate intensity weightlifting improves memory and cognitive function. Next time you need to blow off some steam, hit the weights. Anti – ageing – You lose muscle and strength as you age, however if you strength train you will develop and retain your strength and muscle mass helping to maintain your youthful shape. Reduction in body fat levels - This goes hand in hand with having more lean muscle mass and speeding your metabolic rate up. Lowering body fat reduces the amount of toxins in your body which improves the quality and elasticity of your skin. So ladies if you are looking to feel strong, determined and confident in everything you do from fitting into jeans, to moving heavy furniture, to playing with kids, to dealing with a stressful career, start lifting today!

Q & A with Dr Jane Brazier from Breast Screen QLD
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - an important time for women to think about their breast health. Dr Jane Brazier answers some common questions about breast cancer and having a breast screen. What is breast cancer? Breast cancer is a disease that develops in breast tissue as a result of abnormal cells. Eventually these cells may form a lump in the breast or, in some cases, spread to other parts of the body. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australian women, with 1 in 8 women being diagnosed by the time they turn 85. What is a breast screen? A breast screen is a special x-ray of the breast to look for the signs of early breast cancer. A breast screen is the most effective way of detecting breast cancers early, well before they can be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor. Who can have a breast screen? We provide free breast cancer screening for women aged 50 - 74 years. Women aged 40-49 years and 75 and over are also eligible for a free breast screen. Having a breast screen only takes 30 minutes and it is recommended every two years. All our radiographers are women and you don’t need a GP referral.
Page 24 - October 2018, The Hills Echo
What does it mean to be ‘breast aware’? There is no right or wrong way to check your breasts. Being ‘breast aware’ is about getting to know the normal look and feel of your breasts. If you find any breast changes that concern you, contact your doctor without delay. What if I’m under 40? There is no current evidence that screening mammography is effective in detecting early stages of breast cancer in women under 40 years of age. Women under forty should be ‘breast aware’ and any changes should be discussed with their doctor. Brisbane Northside services are available at Chermside, B r i s b a n e C i t y, Keperra, Kippa-Ring, North Lakes and Indooroopilly. Appointments can be made by phoning 13 20 50 or book online at breastscreen.qld. gov.au Dr Jane Brazier

What’s Stress Got To Do With It?
‘Stress’ is a term used to refer to some life events and our reactions to them. People think of being stressed as ‘bad’ - to be avoided - however ‘stress’ is simply our normal reaction to adjusting to change. Any event that involves change is a ‘stressor’- getting married, moving house, and having a baby are among the most stressful things that humans experience. Stress doesn’t need to be thought of as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, it’s a normal part of our lives. The problem is when we experience ongoing (chronic) stress. Our body produces stress hormones (cortisol, adrenaline, epinephrine), which help us respond t o c hange eff ec t i ve ly. Unfortunately, long-term exposure to these hormones can lead to physiological changes, e.g. general inflammation, which can increase the risk of serious diseases (e.g. auto-immune diseases) later in life. We can also experience more sleep problems, gastrointestinal conditions, and have increased risk of cardiovascular conditions (e.g. high blood pressure, strokes). Psychologically, chronic stress is linked t o i n c r e a s e d a n x i e t y, depression, and other trauma related conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder. There are many ways we can improve our ability to manage stress in our lives. Self-care is extremely important – eating and sleeping as well as possible, exercise, taking time out to relax and to do enjoyable things, and spending time with supportive people. Activities that slow down, and connect the mind and body such as meditation, yoga, tai-chi and massage have proven beneficial. And most importantly - don’t be afraid to seek professional help if needed - everyone has a limit and sometimes we need that extra help to get on top of things. Skin treatments are not just for celebrities!
As Queenslanders we all know that we need to get our skin checked regularly for suspect moles and spots. How do we manage everyday ageing of our skin? The ultraviolet light from the sun is a major contributor to making our skin look old. It damages the fibres in our skin – collagen and elastin. When this happens, the skin begins to sag, stretch and have a patchy appearance. It can become dry, cracked open to infection. There are so many salons, clinics and magic creams out there. It can be a gamble deciding which option to choose. Secret Skin Studio offers an alternative to the mainstream beauty salon services. The therapist takes the time to assess each individual skin concern and present options that are suitable for you. It may be as simple as using your skincare products in a different way or adding in some professional treatments. Skin treatment is not just for celebrities. Nor is it all botox and horrific face peels. There are so many options for non-invasive treatments. For example a diamond microdermabrasion treatment including a specialist mask is referred to as our ‘instant gratification’ treatment. It gently resurfaces, to reduce the appearance of those age spots and fine lines. Secret Skin Studio can offer an affordable, hassle free approach to looking your best. A personal Skin Consultation is available for $30. No hard sales and no spam. If you have questions about your skin contact Elizabeth on 041 2878 511.

A Gym That Is Right For YOU!
Fabulous Physical Fun is a fitness studio conveniently located at the Ferny Grove Shopping Village, next to Coles. The studio specialises in fitness for the mature body, or if people find the competitive mood in gyms is not for them. Studio owner, Bonnie Cunial, started her business about 12 years ago, when at the age of 52, she became a personal trainer. She saw there was a real need for people her own age to become fitter, stronger and more flexible. Bonnie wanted to encourage her clients to work at their own pace and to make the experience fun. The studio has evolved to become a welcoming environment, with qualified trainers and a wide variety of classes to suit all needs. Clients’ thoughts about Fabulous Physical Fun… Yvonne from Redcliffe (yes, she travels 3-4 times a week. Phew! ) is 70 years young. ‘About 4 years ago I started at the studio. I was about 10 kilos heavier, tired all the time, didn’t drink water, and my diet, well… it wasn’t real healthy. Not only have I lost weight, but I have energy to play with my two grandchildren. I really feel about 10 years younger!’ John, retired, from Albany Creek. ‘I started at the studio with my wife about 2 years ago. In that time I have gained more upper body strength, I have more stamina and energy, so I can now work more easily in the garden.’ Barbara is a mature lady from Samford. She joined in 2016, about a year after her breast cancer treatment finished. ‘I was tired and sluggish all the time back then. I moved really slowly, because before my cancer treatment, I was pretty active. In the beginning I started off gently, with 1-2 classes per week. Now I do 4 classes a week. I feel vibrant, my eyes are bright and I have made some lifelong friends.’ Call Bonnie on 0413 600 502 for a Introductory Trial Offer.

Snappy, teary, tender and bloated?
Many women accept that PMS is a normal part of life that they just have to deal with. This monthly mayhem doesn’t have to be part of your life! ‘Those monthly changes in your mood, appetite, energy and sleep patterns may be annoying and should definitely not be considered as normal’ says local Naturopath and Acupuncturist, Patricia McNab. In her 25 years of Practice as a Natural Therapist, Patricia has helped many women (and their partners) with a broad collection of symptoms that are commonly experienced in the last week or two of a monthly menstrual cycle. According to Patricia, those common symptoms of breast soreness, food cravings, increased appetite, fluid retention, moodiness, poor concentration,
skin breakouts and headaches can be managed easily with natural medicines. ‘PMS is definitely a condition that is easy to treat with herbs, nutrients and acupuncture’ says Patricia. ‘I often use combinations of herbs, vitamins, minerals and nutrients in ways that suit each individual. After all your PMS symptoms may often vary from those of the girl next door.’ Diet is also important in the management of this dreadful monthly annoyance. A diet high in fresh fruit, vegetables, essential fatty acids and lean protein sources provides essential phytonutrients, antioxidants and magnesium. Foods that can contribute to hormone imbalances such as non-organic poultry, dairy, red meats, sugar, white flour and refined foods should be eliminated whilst the detoxifying foods such as beets, carrot, yams, garlic, dark leafy greens, lemons and apples are definitely worthwhile including. A high fibre diet is also essential in obtaining hormone health. Patricia also encourages the use of stress management techniques, such as yoga, meditation and exercise. If you want to control your hormones rather than letting them control your life, please give Patricia a call today for more information on how to create a healthy monthly cycle and hormonal balance. You can contact her at Ferny Chiropractic on 3351 0933 or visit www. patriciamcnab.com.au

What Are Iyengar Wall Ropes?
Claire Tierney - Owner of Yogasol, demonstrates the Camel pose using the Iyengar Wall Ropes The ropes will take your Yoga Asana practice to the next level, as they assist your body to hinge and create movement that may have been limited for you in the past. When using the ropes you will gain a deeper understanding of Alignment and mobility, through the proprioperception and total support that the rope provides. As the ropes take your body weight, previous poses that may have been challenging will be much easier and with the rope supporting your body you will be able to find a new depth to your pose. Under the safe supervision of the instructors at Yoga Sol you may find yourself in an inverted position without the need of strong core control or balance. It has long been considered 'by the Yogis' to be of great benefit to take time upside down. Hanging from the rope or just being able to support yourself with ease in Down Dog can give you all these benefits which include: • Increasing Circulation and assisting the return of Venous Blood back to the heart. In other words giving the heart a bit of a rest. • Supporting the elimination of the Lymphatic System. • Anti Ageing • Releasing pressure from gravitational pull upon the spine and other joints of the body. Which in turn can help with degenerative conditions of the spine and or joints. Releasing pain symptoms from chronic conditions. • Brings deeper concentration and focus through increased blood into the brain. • Creates a greater ability to relax the monkey mind and switch off the chitter chatter of the brain. • Improves balance and spacial awareness. • Combates staved self belief and fear. • Inversions can help reduce anxiety, depression and create a deeper more restful sleep. You may chose to take a class or book in for a one on one session with the ropes. For more information please call 0406 692 9891 www.hillsecho.com

Local Access Network Improvements
Funding was approved in this year’s budget for traffic improvements at the intersection of Glenaan and Lislane Streets, Ferny Grove. The proposed works aim to improve motorist and pedestrian by installing a concrete island to prevent corner cutting and promote slower driver behaviour at the intersection. These improvements were in response to community concerns and I am pleased this work will promote slower and safer movement at this intersection.
Community Corners – Ferny Grove Shopping Village I will be holding a community corner on Saturday 13 October at Ferny Grove Shopping Centre outside Coles from 10-11am. Bring your latest rates notice to receive your two free trees voucher.

Parking at Ferny Grove Train Station
his amazing story about being a three-time Paralympian, project manager, chocolatier and motivational speaker. It was also the first year that we have held an outdoor section of the Expo, displaying caravans, fishing, camping and more. A huge thanks to everyone who assisted over the two days and I hope to see you all there next year.

Dickson News
from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON
A huge issue in The Hills District is the lack of car parking at Ferny Grove Train Station. Many in our community have expressed their frustration with this and I am campaigning to get more parking that will meet our needs now, and into the future. If you would like to join my campaign, please visit www.peterdutton.com.au/moreparking We h a v e j u s t celebrated the 15th Dickson Seniors Expo and it was one of the most successful ever. I hold the Expo with the help of the Dickson Seniors Council and each year we try to make it bigger and better than the last. I am proud to say we had over 1,000 seniors visit the Expo this year, receiving information on all sorts of services and organisations that they can access in our local area. One of the highlights of the Expo was hearing from guest speaker Gerrard Gosens OAM, a blind adventurer who shared

Ryan News
from your Federal Member for Ryan: JANE PRENTICE
Ryan Community Service Awards
We all know Meals on Wheels as the volunteer organisation which looks out for those in our community less able to cater for themselves. While most know of the services provided by Meals on Wheels, there is less awareness for the countless volunteers who ensure this vital service continues without a hitch, day after day, week after week, month after month. During my recent attendance at the Mitchelton Meals on Wheels AGM I was delighted to present Ryan Community Service Awards to four volunteers who share some 55 years of combined service. The most recent recipients of the Award include; Mr Cliff Bosson, Mrs Robyn Doris, Mr Russell Moody and Mrs Judy Smith. I offer my sincerest congratulations to them for their commendable dedication. Consider whether you have some spare time to volunteer at your local Meals on Wheels. After all, ‘It’s more than just a meal’!
Grants
With many community groups and individuals contacting my office about grant opportunities I thought it would be useful to highlight where people can seek information about available grants. All the community grants throughout Australia, including those available from the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council, as well as potential grant opportunities from the non-government sector can
be found at https://www.aph.gov.au/About_Parliament/ Parliamentary_Departments/Parliamentary_Library/ pubs/rp/rp1718/Quick_Guides/ComGrants. I encourage all interested parties to refer to the link above.
Government investment in science and innovation (All)
I was delighted to attend UQ recently to officially launch the ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre for Innovation and Biomedical Imaging Technology (CIBIT). The University of Queensland (UQ) was awarded $4.7 million to establish this Australian Research Council Training Centre which will build multidisciplinary links between researchers and within industry to develop ‘smart’ probes and ‘smart’ scanning to provide more cost effective diagnostic imaging and improved health outcomes. By establishing collaborations within the biomedical imaging technology industry, UQ and this training centre are placed at the nexus of a significant collaborative research network . In 2017-18 the Coalition Government invested $10.3 billion in Australia’s research, science and technology capabilities, underscored by a $1.9 billion investment to update our National Research Infrastructure in this year’s Budget. I look forward to the medical advances and breakthroughs from this UQ facility which will improve health care benefits for Queenslanders and all Australians.
I recently attended an Australian Chamber of Commerce event to celebrate the contribution of small business to the Australian economy. The Coalition Government recognises the importance of supporting small business to grow and create jobs.

Everton Park Link Road
At the 2017 election the Labor candidate for Everton David Greene gave an election commitment that the Everton Park Link Road - which was designed in 2012 - would be built by the Palaszczuk Government in this term of government. David was unsuccessful at that election, but I am pleased to report the Palaszczuk Government is delivering on David’s promise with planning for the Everton Park Link Road commencing this month. Construction will begin on the Link Road in 2019. It will connect South Pine Road north of Kedron Brook Creek to Stafford Road east of Mountridge Street. This project is long overdue and is estimated to cost $26 million. The concept plans were completed under the former Labor Government in 2012 but were put on the back-burner by the Newman Government. Once completed the Link Road will provide motorists with traffic-busting options for getting through the Stafford RoadSouth Pine Road gridlock of a morning and evening. This builds on the work the Palaszczuk Government has been doing to relieve traffic problems in Brisbane’s North-West. Improvements have already been made to Samford Road which have seen peak traffic times cut by five minutes of a morning with further improvements to be recommended later this year.
Supporting Our Strawberry Industry
As Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries I have had the privilege to meet and speak with hard-working people all over the Sunshine State who put food
on our tables. The appalling events of last month which saw a small number of strawberries contaminated has hit everyone who works in the strawberry industry very hard. I would like to encourage everyone to get out and support the growers, pickers, truckdrivers and everyone else in the strawberry industry by continuing to buy Queensland strawberries. They are particularly delicious and abundant at this time of year which makes what has happened so tragic. So head down to your local supermarket or fruit shop and grab a punnet or two.
Recently I went down to Vince and Charlie’s Fruit Market on Ferny Way and bought the first hundred punnets to give away to the strawberry lovers of the Hills District. Always remember the advice to cut up the strawberries before eating them!
