Construction Complete on New Street Library There is no doubt that the Street Library revolution is bringing neighbourhoods together and now another library is joining the movement in our local area - The Hills Organic Garden (HOG) library. This library is primarily for gardening books for the young, the old and everyone in between, however other books are welcomed! The committee at HOG had an abundance of books between them that they wanted to share with the community, however the logistics of a conventional library was too difficult, therefore a Street Library for exclusively gardening books was the perfect solution. ‘I was inspired by the article in May’s edition of The Hills Echo about the local street library Kolora Collection and this prompted me to investigate the possibility of a street library for gardening books,’ said Kathi Hildebrand, President of The Hills District Community Garden. The committee engaged students from the construction program at Marist 180, located in Samford to construct the library box. Marist 180 is a community organisation that allows disadvantaged men and women to gain skills to enable them to find a pathway to employment. Students Andrea Spain, Johnson Okodeng, Omot Ojwado, Fawwaz Hindo along with head trainer Sam Bailye worked on the project. Inspired by the design of ‘Kolora Collection,’ the HOG library is made entirely of recycled or reclaimed materials. ‘The door is from an old Queenlander, the roof is from a shed in Dayboro,’ said head trainer Sam Bailye. It is conveniently located at Fishlips Seafood Cafe at Fernlands Shopping Centre in Woodhill Road. Cafe owners James and
Hayley volunteered to host and look after the library. The HOG committee are very appreciative of their generosity and community spirit. Although permanent signage will arrive shortly, the street library is now fully up and running so why not drop by and have a browse, create a conversation and get the whole family into gardening.
The construction crew: Johnson Okodeng, Andrea Spain, Sam Bailye, Omot Ojwado & Fawwaz Hindo

Green Energy Coming To Bunya Waste Facility
Moreton Bay Regional Council's Bunya waste facility will soon turn waste to energy with construction of a new gas-to-energy plant.
Over the past 12 months, 3.6 million cubic metres of landfill gas was flared at Bunya. Flaring methane is better for our environment than simply releasing this gas into the atmosphere due to its high greenhouse gas rating. The new one megawatt gas-to-energy plant will harvest this methane gas to produce enough electricity to power more than 2000 local homes. Construction on the new plant is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
Feed 50 Families This Christmas
Once again this year Picabeen Community Centre is looking for help to provide Christmas hampers to the growing number of local people experiencing hardship. The centre has been supporting at least 40 families and other vulnerable people with those hampers, but in the last two years, the numbers had grown to over 50 families. People, groups or households who want to be part of this program can drop their donation at the centre. For businesses who would like to help, a crate can be dropped off at your premises, or you can use your own. Picabeen can only accept non-perishable food and Christmas treats. People do not need a red suit to bring happiness at Christmas and if you made a contribution last year you would know how meaningful your actions were to the families and community members. The centre is at 22 Hoben St, Mitchelton. Phone 3354 2555 or email info@picabeen.org.au for information.

Off season planning for Arana Netball
Arana Netball Club Committee is busy during the off-season, as plans are made for next year.
Equipment, uniforms, plans for sign-on and trials – all are matters needing attention now to be ready for the 2019 winter season. Where possible, Arana Netball will apply for grant funding to help cover major upcoming expenses. Meanwhile many players are keeping up with netball through summer, by playing summer night season, and taking part in player development programme and representative trials. Several players 7 to 13 years are currently taking part in free Monday evening training seasons at the Leslie Patrick Park courts The purpose of these is to help new players learn what netball is about, and to help young players with little experience learn more netball skills. Meetings are held monthly, on the third Monday of the month, at the Arana Sports meeting room of the Hills District Community Centre, commencing at 7.30pm. All interested in the running and future of Arana Netball are welcome to attend, with the next meeting on 19th November. To follow what is happening with Arana Netball Club see the web page at www.arananetballclub.com.au, or follow the club on Facebook. For further enquiries, email arananetballclub@ gmail.com

Pine Rivers awarded elephant as part of Mental Heath Week campaign
Pine Rivers got ACTIVE! for mental health week as they welcomed a large grey elephant into their courtyard.
This month Pine Rivers Private Hospital played host to one of the Australian Private Hospital Associations inflatable elephants as part of this year’s Mental Health Week.
Every year, the APHA sends 15 elephants to various private hospitals as part of the weeklong campaign, with the animal designed to start a conversation about ‘elephant in the room’ and remove the stigma surrounding mental illness. Pine Rivers General Manager Ann Stevens said the elephant was right at home in the hospital courtyard, though he did get up to some mischief visiting other departments within the hospital as well! ‘We work hard to cultivate an environment that is calming and
nurturing for our patients and their families, and this includes the maintenance of peaceful garden areas and outdoor spaces to encourage daily movement and boost wellbeing,’ she said. ‘Our lush hospital courtyard is the ideal temporary home for the APHA elephant, especially given the busy schedule of events we have planned for Mental Health Week. ‘I think the elephant served as a glorious symbol of awareness, treatment and hope for our current and former patients, along with the wider hospital community.’ This year, Mental Health Week ran from Sunday 7 October through to Saturday October 13, with World Mental Health Day recognised on Wednesday 10 October. As part of the week’s events, Pine Rivers held a Family and Friends Fair in the hospital courtyard on Saturday 13th October, which included a barbecue, a mindfulness colouring corner, games and face painting! Though the weather wasn’t at its best this didn’t dampen the mood with the majority of patients joining in along with their friends and family. In addition to this, the hospital has also completed a large art piece for one of the inpatient rooms - a wall size mandala made up of 70 small artworks coloured in by hospital patients. ‘Mental Health Week is such an important event and the Pine Rivers team is passionate about working with APHA to help raise community awareness about the mental health sector and our capacity to care for Australians who need us,’ said Ms Stevens. Samford Valley Probus Club
Earlier this year, Samford Valley Probus Club welcomed Ingrid de Jong from Karuna Hospice. She came to speak about in home palliative care for families, a learning and support service they offer to help with grief and bereavement.
Karuna Hospice believes that having the skills and support to face the challenges and uncertainty can make this difficult journey a little easier. The Hospice relies heavily on the kindness of volunteers as only a portion of their funding comes from Queensland Health. Ingrid gave a very interesting and informative talk. The Samford Valley Probus Club meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 10am at the Samford Bowls Club. The meeting is followed by morning tea and a guest speaker. New members and guests are most welcome. For information about the club or to attend please phone Betty on Ingrid de Jong from 3351 4572. Karuna Hospice

TAX MATTERS Maximise your tax return
We are already a third of the way through the new financial year, so we have asked local Accountant and Small Business Adviser, Steve Brett from Tax Arana to give us some top tips for ensuring you maximise your tax refund each financial year. Keep good tax records; get back to basics and keep on top of your admin! Download statements, update log books, keep all your receipts! Accountants can provide free software for small business clients who need some help with their record keeping. Choose a registered Tax Agent; with tax laws and regulations changing constantly, it can be hard to understand exactly what you can claim and what you can't. If you are looking at several years of back dated tax returns, it’s important to remember that the rules for allowable deductions change each year, so you need to apply the rule that applies for those years you are claiming for. A registered tax agent is your safest option. Once you have found a good Accountant, stick with them. A good Accountant gets to know you and your business, and will be up to speed with your business taxes and your allowable deductions. Make charitable donations; any donation to a registered charity over $2 is tax deductible - keep your receipts! Lodge your tax return on time; Avoid possible ATO penalties by lodging your tax return on time, especially if you are expecting a refund, the sooner you get your refund the better.

Brisbane Tramway Museum November Update
Restoration is a major on-going role for the museum. At present, there are two trams and a trolley bus under-going this process. Because our volunteers can only spend a few hours each week plying their skills, naturally restoration can take many years in some cases to complete.
One of the trams currently being restored is 136, originally built in 1914. 136 is a Dreadnought class tram and in its early years, was subject to some changes in its seating arrangement and the driving platforms at each end. It is being restored in its original livery, not the sombre silver we became used to over the years. It is designed to carry about 60 passengers. Other major work being carried out at present includes the rewiring of the control circuits and re-flooring the cabin. The museum is also gearing up for a commemoration in early December when it will trace the routes of the last tram services to use Adelaide Street, in December 1968. In conjunction with the Qld Omnibus and Coach Society, 1968 Leyland Panther buses will carry passengers from Roma Street along various old tram routes to Rainworth, Bardon, Grange, Chermside and Enoggera, including a stop at the museum for rides and afternoon tea. The tour will take place on Sunday 2nd December, departing Roma Street at 12.15 pm and arriving back at approx. 5.30 pm. Fares will be: Early Bird (before 11 pm on 18 November) - $40 per person and after that date $45 per person. For more details email bnetramway@gmail.com or phone 0457 853 102. COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, I am 34 years old, single and desperate. I have had a few long term relationships, but nothing of any significance in the last four years, just a number of month or so stands. I did not see the point of pursuing a relationship if I did not see any long term potential. My dream was to get married and to have a horde of children. I have tried those internet dating sites, speed dating, dance clubs, I have tried everything. I am getting very depressed about this, the only up is that I love my job, but it is not one where I am likely to meet Mr Right. I have great friends but most of them are married or in relationships. Even more depressing is that my last free girlfriend recently hooked up with someone and now I really have no one to go out with. I am too old to go clubbing or do single hangouts. The majority of my friends are really busy with their young families and don’t have the time or money to do things with me. I tried a cruise ship holiday by myself, and that was a disaster. The weekends can be so long and I am becoming obsessed with the thought that this is it! I will just have this empty boring life. My dream of a man and babies is in shatters. Even if I meet someone I will be too old to have children. I am just feeling so lonely. I am running out of time and it is putting so much pressure on me that I am afraid I might just say ‘yes’ to the next man that comes along. What is wrong with me? Am I too fussy? How do I get out of this awful mindset? Tania Dear Tania, In summary, to get out of any depressing mindset, clarifying why you are thinking what you are thinking is the first step. The second step is noticing the feelings that are associated with these thoughts. Develop techniques of mindfulness and conscious awareness that you are having these thoughts and choosing, with the aid of strategies, how to lessen the effect of them, so that you can create distance between that conscious witnessing part in yourself and the thought feeling body you have been obsessing with. With practice you are then able to put your energy and focus into thoughts and activities that will add value to your life. Clarify what the thoughts are that are causing you this sense of desperation. These are the common ones. Is it about not having enough time? If you don’t achieve this goal is there something wrong with you? Do you think you are a failure as a woman, not worthy of being loved, that you are left out,
a reject? Are you too fussy? Sometimes fussy gets disguised as lack of self-worth. Is proof of success in your own eyes and of others measured by the achievement of your dreams? Notice the feeling these thoughts bring up, notice which thoughts the strongest feelings are attached to. Doing this, helps develop our awareness of what we need to be mindful about. We determine our worth by many different things. When we need our self worth validated by the acquisition or achievement of these things we can create problems for ourselves. When we do this it is not our validity that we should be questioning but the measurement we are choosing to validate ourselves with. It is time then to examine what it is that we really value in ourselves and our life, not in the way we think that this can be expressed. For you it seems like your plan A for this expression can only be through marriage and children. What about plan B? Already you realize how much misery your obsession with these thoughts is causing you. How much of your life do you want to spend doing this or do you want to make the best you can of what is available to you? Put your dreams aside for the moment and clarify what it is that you value in yourself and life. Do you want to be the most loving, compassionate, articulate, creative etc. person you can be? What other goals can you see as being worthwhile? What are your passions, things that you enjoy, travel, physical, creative, intellectual pursuits? When you have done this, list down the ways you can go about starting to achieve this now. Having an alternative plan of action to choose is what we need when we notice our obsessive mind set and its current behaviours starting up again. Remember the more you focus on something the more it will grow. Empowerment is responsibly choosing what you want that to be. Robin

Lower Power Prices Coming
I am pleased to let you know that the Coalition has just released a simple and practical plan to reduce power prices. Our plan will stop the big energy companies’ price-gouging by requiring them to pass on savings to customers and will give the regulator a big stick to crack down on dodgy, anticompetitive practices. We will create a price safety net to stop companies charging loyal customers more - you should not pay hundreds more per year just because you don’t have time to shop around for a better deal.
The Coalition is focused on delivering cheaper, more reliable power and is in stark contrast to the Labor Party who will drive power prices up by introducing an unrealistic 50% renewable target. These, and other changes, will ultimately see your electricity bill reduced. This is good news for our local area and something I’ve fought hard to secure.

Ryan News
from your Federal Member for Ryan: JANE PRENTICE
Remembrance Day Remembrance Day is approaching and I encourage everyone in the community to attend a commemoration ceremony on 11 November 2018. Our community continues to honour the service and sacrifice of the men and women who serve in defence of our nation, and this year marks the very significant 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War in 1918. Remembrance Day is on a Sunday this year, providing even more opportunity to attend a ceremony to commemorate the end of The Great War. As a community, it is essential that each generation understands how Australia’s involvement in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations has shaped our country; and learns about the sacrifice of so many servicemen and women. Schools have been sent an educational kit developed by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), to help them plan educational and commemorative Remembrance Day activities. Remembrance Day services in the Ryan electorate include those at Sherwood-Indooroopilly, Toowong, The Gap, Kenmore, Bellbowrie and Gaythorne RSLs. Please contact your local RSL for details on their Remembrance Day service.
Scam alert
My office has been alerted to an increase in scammers purporting to be representing the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Scammers are using technology to make it appear that they are calling from a legitimate ATO phone number.
This number may appear on caller ID, be left on voice mail messages for call backs, or directed by *69 for call back functionality. Scammers do this to make the calls seem more valid when they call people a second time. Most frequently the number appearing is 6216 1111, but other numbers have been used as well. Be vigilant for any suspicious phone calls and warn your friends and family to be aware of this scam, especially if they use a tax agent. If you have any doubts about a call you receive, don’t hesitate to hang up and report it on 1800 008 540.

ENOGGERA and DISTRICTS HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC.
As the years turn to decades and time goes by, or should I say as our district progresses, there is always something to commemorate. This month it has been the Centenary of the railway arriving at Mitchelton, followed a week later on November 11 by the centenary of the end of a terrible world war. As a local history society it is our responsibility to bring these events to your notice and we do so with pride in our district's progress. Next year we will have our own reason to celebrate, our silver anniversary. Our library is at your disposal every Thursday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to research or to browse, be you an historian or a member of a community group. Other times can be arranged; come and we will show you how those earlier generations lived and coped with war and depression. Container Refund Scheme
The Queensland Government’s Container Refund Scheme kicked off on 1 November. From this month onward Queenslanders can at last join people in South Australia and other parts of the country to get cash back for recycling containers. Under the Containers for Change initiative residents are able to get 10 cents back from eligible containers they recycle at Containers For Change sites. This initiative is all about encouraging people to recycle and reducing plastic pollution which is a problem we can address with planning and a little effort. Around three billion beverage containers are used every year in Queensland and despite the fact that they can be easily recycled they are one of the most commonly littered items that you see in our local environment. In the Hills District we are fortunate to play host to U Can Recycle – a fully operational container recycling refund depot. Located at 6-131 Bunya Road, Arana Hills, U Can Recycle will open weekdays from 9am to 4:30pm, Saturdays from 8:30am to 2pm and Sundays from 11am to 4:30pm. More sites will open as the scheme is rolled out with bag drop off points and reverse vending machines also possible. For more information go to www.containersforchange.com.au/ where-can-i-return. Once registered you can collect the 10 cents per container yourself or donate the refund to a charity or community
organisation. Containers for Change will likely prove to be a great fundraising stream for community groups as the Scouts have demonstrated in South Australia. For more information about the scheme, including eligible containers and refund points, visit: www.containersforchange. com.au or call 13 42 42.
