Christmas Greetings from the Editor What a sensational year it has been for The Hills Echo! It has been a privilege to bring you the latest community news, stories and events each month. Over 2017 we have seen The Echo grow from strength to strength within our wonderful community. With the rise in digital craze I am delighted that our print publication is continuing to grow. We added the distribution area of Samford, the print run increased to 14,400 per month to keep up with demand, new distribution points in childcare centres and local businesses plus magazine stands have also popped up around the local area. What’s more, we have also sold out of advertising space in four issues this year! To keep up with the times The Echo’s website is currently being redesigned to cope with the increased traffic and there will be more functionality for the user with a Business Directory, a What’s On calendar, jobs board, digital advertising space and much more! The new site will be launched in the upcoming weeks so keep an eye out for it! www.hillsecho.com In addition, we also have a monthly Enewsletter that is sent to over 3,000 subscribers (and this number is growing rapidly!).
I would like to extend a huge thank you to our loyal Echo advertising family who have continued to support our local community publication both in print and online. Without our advertisers we simply could not bring this community publication to your letterbox each month. I would also like to thank the numerous community groups, sports clubs and residents for their submissions throughout the year that provide fabulous content. I am extremely appreciative of the wonderful team behind me at The Echo; Lyn Fryer who relentlessly proof reads The Echo every month, Roger Fryer for his IT support, Kristy Beard and Kerri Arnold who hit the streets come rain, hail or shine to deliver The Echo to all businesses and of course my letterbox contractors. Not forgetting my supportive and loving family for their help! Finally I would like to thank YOU, our loyal readers, who continue to pick up The Echo and follow us each month. Keep reading in 2018 as we have so much in store! Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Major Upgrade for Samford’s Main Street
Moreton Bay’s Councillor for Division 11, Darren Grimwade, has announced that council will invest more than $400,000 towards the first stage of a major upgrade for Samford’s Main Street. The $400,000 commitment will go towards new pedestrian crossings along the tourism and business hub, as well as upgrades for the intersections of Main Street with Kath Fitzgerald Drive and Station Street. The announcement follows extensive consultation in 2016 and 2017 with locals, businesses and visitors. The crossings will be located along Main Street at: • South of the Kath Fitzgerald Drive intersection; • North of the Cash Avenue North intersection; and • North of the Station Street intersection. This upgrade will bring improved pedestrian safety along Main Street and the project is a much needed upgrade for one of Samford’s main business areas. Works are set to commence in early 2018 and be completed over seven weeks, weather permitting, ahead of the second stage of the Main Street upgrades, which includes new road surfacing.
Road Safety Trial Launched at Everton Hills
Dangerous driving on the roads around Everton Hills has prompted Moreton Bay Regional Council to take action in the interests of public safety.
Division 10 Councillor Matt Constance said he was alarmed by the number of incidents in recent years and numerous reports from residents about hooning and dangerous driving behaviour and would immediately launch a road safety trial to find a solution. Cr Constance said he hoped the road safety trial would help to reduce traffic incidents and ‘remind motorists to slow down and stick to the speed limits.’ The trial has been welcomed by local residents who have long been concerned about dangerous driving in the area. In addition to the installation of the speed cushions, council will also build a pedestrian refuge at Bennetts Road to further improve road safety. Installation works are completed and council will continue to collect speed and volume data throughout the trial period.

Samford Probus Club News
The monthly outing for October was the Bribie Ferryman Cruise of Pumicestone Passage.
Firstly rain and then storms were predicted but we had a picture perfect day for the almost 40 members and friends who attended. We set off from the Marina and headed north, being served tea, coffee and cake for morning tea and with the skipper’s commentary pointing out various landmarks and relating information on the mammals and birds inhabiting the area. Pumicestone Passage, we were told, was Courtesy Vehicle Available! explored by Matthew Flinders in his ship the Norfolk and was named by him originally, as a river, as he was unable to navigate the full length of the sometime shallow passage. A cold meats and salads lunch was served, as the ferry turned NOW OPEN about at Mission Point, to the 1st Saturday of every month enjoyment of all. The sea air had stimulated all appetites. Our Probus club meets at the Samford Bowls Club at 10am on the third Thursday of each month (except December) and visitors and new members are most welcome. For more information phone Betty on 3351 4572.

Arana Netball Club Planning for 2018
At this time of the year, Arana Netball Committee is busy planning and organising arrangements for the 2018 netball season.
Sign-on has been set for Wednesday 24th January, at the netball courts off Olearia Street West, Everton Hills. Committee will be in attendance from 5.30pm to 7pm, with uniforms information, information on playing for Arana, and help with registration available. Sign-on will be available on-line through MyNetball for all players, with the facility to pay upfront, (or in agreed instalments if necessary). As Arana Netball Club’s website has been undergoing upgrade, it has not been possible to access information recently but this should be up and running soon. Arana Netball is also on Facebook so updates can be obtained there or by phoning the President, Jenna, on 0404 132 007. (Queries can also be emailed to arananetballclub@gmail. com.) In keeping with being a family-orientated club with a philosophy of making it possible for all to play team sport, Arana Netball continually strives to keep costs as low as possible. With this in mind, fees for players have been kept at last year’s figure of $280 per player, reducing to $260 for subsequent dependent family members under 19 years old. Uniform costs will be reduced this year, with exact costs to be determined and released in the next few weeks. For anyone from age 8 years (born 2010) to Opens (seniors over 19 years) netball offers the perfect opportunity to play a team sport and enjoy healthy exercise and friendships with club and team mates. Arana Netball fields teams in all age groups, competing at Downey Park, Windsor, on Saturdays. The 2018 fixtures commence on 21st April, and the season continues to Grand Finals on 1st September. To make the operations of a club possible, Committee and all other interested parties meet regularly to facilitate this. Arana Netball meetings are on the third Monday each month, at the Arana Sports meeting room in the Hills District Community Centre, Dawson Parade, Arana Hills, commencing at 7.30pm. The next meeting will be on Monday 18th December – all parents, senior players, and anyone else interested, are invited and urged to attend – the more ideas contributed the better the Club can serve the needs of the community. At this time of year, Arana Netball Club, while looking ahead to next season, also reflects on the year ending, and wishes to thank all for their support – this includes the netball families, government agencies, Arana Leagues Club and fellow member clubs of Arana Sports, businesses who support with donations for prizes when needed, and The Hills Echo for their ongoing support. Arana Netball extends best wishes for a safe and happy holiday period to all. www.hillsecho.com

Mitchelton Garden Club After 7th December, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will be in recess until its first meeting in 2018 on 1st February at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. A club member, Ann Barton, will be the guest speaker and her topic will be ‘What’s In My Garden.’ Ann is a keen gardener who is always on the look-out for unusual plants. She has a great collection of these in her garden and as well as sharing interesting information about them, she’ll have specimens of what is available at the time. She could even have some photos of plants which came into bloom at another time of the year.
Our plant world produces an amazing variety of shapes, colour, and growing habits, not to mention the benefits given to humankind as well, and this talk will help us appreciate the wonders of Nature. Be sure to make provision to protect your indoor plants when you go away on holidays, and remember to water your garden with Seasol to help the plants cope with the stress of hot weather. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month. Meetings commence after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. The hall is situated at the junction of Trundle and Wardell Streets, Enoggera, and is close to public transport. Wishes are extended to all for a joyous Christmas followed by a peaceful, happy New Year. For more information please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256.

The Priority Report About the downsizing market
Statistics show that listings have fallen across Australia. Hundreds of thousands of older couples are living in large family homes and are weary of the ongoing maintenance and repairs these homes require. (who really enjoys mowing the lawn?) At the same time, the homes these over 50s occupy are typically among the most expensive in neighbourhoods, because they have a large land and house size. A third of over 50s are looking to move from their family home to more suitable and well-located accommodation—in other words “downsizing”. The first question people are confronted with is – where do I start with clearing up 40 years’ worth of memories and accumulated ‘stuff’ – it is a big issue but we can help with several ideas and project management of the preparations to downsizing – call us now to discuss these ideas.

Geckos and Electrical Equipment Geckoes may seem harmless but this year our property management department has had a number of situations where electrical equipment such as air conditioners require repair due to a fried Gecko. Geckos are mainly nocturnal and congregate around places that are well lit and attract lots of bugs. You can reduce escaping household light at night by shutting the curtains and turning off lights that aren’t in use. Switching outdoor lights to yellow bulbs reduces insects and geckos, as does installing outdoor sensor lights rather than leaving outdoor lights on permanently. Finally clean and check your air conditioning unit regularly to lower your risk of frying your air con and a Gecko.

High Achieving Local Scout!
Chloe Tomczak is a Patrol Leader at the local Wahminda Park Scout Group in Ferny Hills.
Over the last 3 years, she has worked hard towards achieving her proficiency badges and has managed to be awarded every single one of them. That is a whopping 31 proficiency badges, on top of her First Aid and Anzac Service badges. This makes her, at the age of 13 the highest decorated Scout at the Chloe Tomczak with her 31 proficiency badges den, within the Sir Leslie Wilson District and most likely in the region. Proficiency badges are not given lightly and scouts have to work very hard to get them, challenging themselves beyond their comfort zone. Other badges challenge them within the community such as Crime Prevention, Communication and Agriculture. Her next challenge is the highly sought-after Australian Scout Medallion before she reaches 15…before moving up to Venturers and commencing work towards the Queen’s Scout award.

by Dave Livett Excuse the cliché but where on earth has this year gone! Never mind; if you missed out on joining or visiting us in 2017 you will be just as welcome in 2018. Our final Thursday morning opening for this year is 14 December; the library will re-open on the 11th January and barring unforeseen calamity will open each Thursday throughout the year between 9.30am and 1pm or at other times by arrangement. As usual we will hold our Anzac Day afternoon service and our open day in July. We will continue to commemorate the centenary of World War I, but as you will see when you visit, our historical archive goes well beyond matters military. Our wheelchair friendly research centre known as Kate Perry Library, is located in Enoggera Memorial Hall on the corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets, Enoggera (refidex 139 A10). By car the hall is approached from Glenalva Terrace or Pratt Street; limited parking is available adjacent to Trundle Street entrance. Buses 350, 390, 598 and 599 pass the door; Enoggera station on Ferny Grove line is a few minutes walk towards Samford Road/Wardell St intersection. For more information phone Dave on 3366 3191 or email edhs.secretary@gmail.com New members are always welcome and our publications are readily available. Christmas is a time for giving
Re-election
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of the Everton electorate for re-electing me to the Queensland Parliament. It is an honour and a privilege to once again represent the community where I grew up. I still remain enthusiastic and passionate about making our district the most liveable in Queensland. During the campaign, the Labor Government matched my commitment to complete Stage 1 of the Stafford and South Pine Rd upgrade. This is a vital piece of infrastructure to help ease the traffic congestion in this area. I will be doing my utmost to ensure the government keeps their promise. Enough of politics, the Christmas season is upon us.

I am once again supporting the Pine Rivers Care Network in their Annual Christmas Hamper Appeal. Christmas Card Competition
Thank you and congratulations to all the children and schools who took part in my annual Christmas Card Competition for 2017. This year’s theme was ‘The Night Before Christmas’ and we had thousands of entries in each of the 4 categories. I have enjoyed meeting the winners and their families and hosting a pizza party for them and their classmates. Please keep an eye out for your Christmas card in the mail.
Australia Day Awards
Nominations are now open for my Australia Day Awards! The awards recognise local heroes and community groups for their service to our community. If you know of someone who lives in Dickson who you think deserves recognition for their hard work, please fill in the nomination form in the Online Office tab on my website or call my office on 3205 9977 if you have any questions.
Stay Smart Online
With record numbers of people expected to do their Christmas shopping online this year it’s important to make sure that your personal details are safe and secure.
The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) Threat Report for 2017 indicates that in the last 12 months reported incidences were up 15% on the previous year. The Government is leading the way with the $230 million Cyber Security Strategy but it is important that each of us do everything we can to ensure our own security. I want to encourage you to take these five simple steps to improve your safety online: 1. Limit what you share – be proactive in managing your privacy and identity. 2. Create strong passwords – use passwords that are at least 16 characters long. 3. Protect yourself online – regularly update all software, and ensure you have anti-virus software on all devices. 4. Back up your data – back up your data as often as you can, back up important information daily. 5. Avoid online scams – watch out for suspicious messages, links and attachments. For more information please visit www.staysmartonline. gov.au

Wishing Ryan a Happy, Healthy and Safe Holiday Season
As we wind down the year I would like to wish everyone in the Ryan electorate a happy, healthy and safe holiday season. May you enjoy the festive season with loved ones, and give thought to our soldiers serving away from their families during this time. Heading into the warmer months, please remember to be safe around pools and waterways. Always watch out for your children, wear a life jacket and refresh your life-saving skills. It is also important to prepare for bushfire and storm season. Keep up to date at http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/ community/community-safety/disasters-emergencies/ be-prepared. If you are going away these holidays, it is important to make sure you are informed and prepared for any situation. Remember to not only take out travel insurance, but choose sufficient cover for your circumstances. Before you go away, register your trip on the Smart Traveller website at www.smartraveller.gov.au where you can find all of the information you need to be prepared. I would also like to wish those students who have recently graduated Year 12 all the best for their future endeavours, whether it be in employment, university or travel.

Day of Disability
As the Assistant Minister for Social Services and Disability Services, last month I travelled from Brisbane to Mackay, Townsville, Ingham and Melbourne to discuss all things NDIS. This is the 25th year of International Day of People with Disability, which is celebrated with the release of a commemorative 20 cent coin. There are many wonderful organisations and programs in the Ryan electorate such as The McIntyre Centre Riding for Disabled, The Glenleighden School, HELP Enterprises and The Brisbane Paralympic Football Program, which support people with disability to become integrated in sporting activities, work and life.

Bridges, playgrounds and planning were the focus of my office during the last twelve months. Tennis Avenue Bridge Ashgrove and Glen Parade Bardon both saw removal of the old timber structures and replaced with structures having a minimum life cycle of 100 years. A number of new playgrounds and upgrades were completed throughout the ward this year and I have listed the full details of these parks on my webpage www.steventoomey.com.au The second stage of Walton Bridge Reserve began with a concept design for the upgrade of the Memorial. I look forward to seeing this project completed to celebrate Remembrance Day 2018. Planning is underway for an upgrade of Honeyeater Park, Upper Kedron. The new play equipment will be staged over two years; the first stage will be a playground with shelters. The concept design for this play equipment will be available early next year for community consultation. Two neighbourhood plans are in progress. The Ferny Grove/ Upper Kedron Neighbourhood Plan is sitting with the State Government for endorsement. The Gap Neighbourhood Plan draft strategy has been released for public comment. Please make sure you have your say. I look forward to continuing to work with you to ensure the ward is a great place to live, work, and relax. Christmas is the time of year we get together with family and friends to celebrate what is dear to us. We are all looking forward to the break over Christmas and the office will be closed from Thursday 21st December to Monday 8th January 2018. The Council Contact Centre is open 24/7 365 days a year on 3403 8888.
On behalf of The Gap Ward team I wish you all a safe and peaceful Christmas and a very happy 2018.

State Election
State Member for Ferny Grove
I am deeply humbled by the result of the state election in Ferny Grove. I would like to thank those who voted for me or gave me their preference and I give you the undertaking I will not let you down. To those who expressed a different wish at the ballot box, please be assured I am very much aware it is my responsibility to represent you also with vigour, honesty and hard work. As I write the final make-up of the parliament is not known, but I am confident that the Premier will be returned with enough support to ensure a majority Labor government. If that is the case, I look forward to delivering on the promises I gave to the electorate during the campaign. Also I would like to congratulate my fellow North-West Brisbane colleagues for their successful returns to Queensland parliament as well. Dr Anthony Lynham in Stafford, Tim Mander in Everton and Nikki Boyd in Pine Rivers. I trust that the fixed term of parliament, combined with the stability of a majority government, will provide the certainty of planning and investment or region needs to prosper. The next state election is set for 31 October 2020.

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, I am a single mum and am doing it reasonably hard. I have a boy 10 and a girl who has just turned 13 and thinks she's going on 20. She's been a real little bitch lately. She keeps pushing me and is so persistently awful, to try and get what she wants, which is to break every rule that I set for her. The only saving grace is she has a good group of friends that she spends a lot of time with. Also, apparently she behaves beautifully when she is not around me. She's always wanting to sleep over at friends. She continually says I'm the social gestapo and I don't let her do what all her friends' parents allow their kids to do. I don't think it's right that thirteen-year-olds are okay to cruise around til all hours of the night, or to stay in the city, or go to discos etcetera. The list of her wants goes on. I feel like I’m outnumbered. I have set and keep clear boundaries and I feel she should respect them, no matter what her friends may be allowed to do. Am I being unreasonable? Carol. Dear Carol, There are a number of points that you have raised. It would be a good idea to check out some of the basics first. Her bitchiness may be a product of hormonal changes she may be beginning to undergo at this point of her life. Have you checked out the appropriateness of the diet and sleep requirements she is actually getting? Possible nutritional, vitamin deficiencies can contribute to increased moodiness. A number of people find Adol Essence - an Australian bush flower remedy helpful with teenage moodiness. Your daughter is also at a point in her development where it is natural to rebel and push the boundaries. She's testing you. And it's important that she knows that she can rely on your word. Rules are needed and must be heeded. Firmness and fairness is one of the great attributes of good parenting that children can benefit from at this stage. This is what teaches them respect for others and themselves. One way that you may be able to be supported in maintaining reasonable and safe boundaries and consequences of breaking them is through that group of friends of hers. My bet is that she's exaggerating other parents' allowances. At just thirteen she is still a child, and it is our duty to responsibly supervise them. Is it at all possible to get the other parents together with the idea of forming a set of behavioural expectations that are consistent throughout the group? If you are able to establish this, then the adults won't be able to be played off one against the other. My intuition is that the other parents would welcome this. We all want our
kids to be safe, have fun and not to cause emotional havoc in this way. Basic rules such as: 1) We need to know where you are; 2) Who you are with; 3) For how long; 4) That responsible adults are present, particularly after hours in the evening when they're sleeping over; 5) The contact numbers and details are available, and that it's expected that each parent can check in with whomever the children are with to make sure that the little blighters are doing what they say they are. If it is a group boundary and all have to abide by it, there is less room for manoeuvre, more acceptance of those rules, and the kids find out what they really want to know: That you care, and are willing to go to quite a bit of trouble to make sure that they are safe. They may carry on a bit about it, but that's par for the course. It takes the pressure off the individual parent and spreads it around rather like how group responsibility for the young operated in the old village or small community environments. This is a very valuable support and safety net for both adults and the young, that we have lost in our modern lack of community. Try it and see how it goes. Robin.

My Heritage
The Queensland Family History Society is constantly seeking ways to provide services for its members. Our latest initiative is to provide free access for members to MyHeritage, a subscription website. QFHS members now have access MyHeritage Library Edition and are able to login to the database from their home computers. MyHeritage Library Edition features a focus on people-based records, which contain information about both everyday people and prominent individuals across societies and periods of time. This emphasis, plus the strength of the index, enables users to access information both about specialised topics (regions, time periods) as well as social, cultural, and political trends. MyHeritage has more than five billion historical records from all over the world. The particular strength of this service is the European records it contains. The database also has features which include ‘Smart Matching™’ (finding matching profiles in family trees), ‘Record Matching’ (finding automatic matches between people and historical records), ‘Instant Discoveries™’ (a unique technology that allows adding a whole new branch to the family tree in one click), ‘SuperSearch™’ (a search engine for exploring billions of historical records) and ‘Global Name Translation™’ (a function that translates names found in historical records and family trees from one language into another). There are additional features as well. QFHS members can access MyHeritage from the Members’ Area of the QFHS website; www.qfhs.org.au/members-area. You can find information about QFHS at www.qfhs.org.au.

THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN THUMBS DOWN to millions of dollars
spent on an election and all we get is politicians.
THUMBS UP to those decorating our streets with Christmas lights. Makes the season worth looking forward to. THUMBS DOWN to a banking inquiry.
They won’t change no matter what the result. Let’s have a proper discussion about water pricing; electricity price hikes; daily petrol price variations or even the proposterous politicians’ super and perks. But of course they’re right, banking is an easier target.
THUMBS UP to another wonderful Royal
wedding next year. I’m so excited I am running around trying to find someone vaguely interested.
THUMBS DOWN to the Ashes cricket deteriorating into a war of sledges. The cricket has been tense and uncovering some new talent. The sledging by senior players is just childishand without the cutting wit of by-gone proponents
