Hamper Helpers Spread Christmas Joy

What do you think of when you hear the word ‘Christmas’? Decorations maybe, or a Michael Bublé album, or a big Christmas family meal. Wherever your imagination takes you, we can all agree that Christmas is a time of family and community coming together. Last year, the people of Arana Hills Church of Christ set out to help families and individuals within their local community with Christmas Hampers. The idea was to make 50 hampers filled with goodies that would bring value and love into the homes that the hampers went to. By the end of the endeavour, they were able to give out 132 hampers to families and people in need! It was no small effort, and they knew from the beginning they could not do it alone. So, Arana Hills Church opened doors to opportunities for the community to be involved. People from everywhere donated all sorts of items, but they were also invited to join in on the packing experience. Parents brought

their children, young people brought their friends, and the community came together. Initiatives like these are much easier to achieve when we do them collectively. This year, Arana Hills Church partnered with Hills Collective, a collaborative collection of individuals, schools and organisations that exist to collectively use their resources to meet the needs of the Hills District. Together, they envisioned for this year’s appeal to ‘Bring Christmas Home’, hoping to once again help as many people as they could. This year, a staggering 150+ hampers have been packed to date - a great collaborative effort by all! Collecting donations and packing the hampers is one side of the project. Identifying the people and families to give them to is the other. To do this, they go to their community again, partnering with local school Support Services and Chaplains. The schools give the church a number, and the church gives that many hampers to the Chaplains to give out, building on the trust and relationships already formed by their A happy hamper helper! care.

It’s that time of year again, the festive season is now in full swing!

We are delighted to announce that the Brisbane Bunya Lions Club will once again be hosting the fun-filled annual community event, ‘Carols in the Park,’ and everyone is invited to attend! The carols will take place on Saturday 14th December from 5pm to 8pm at Mitchelton Park on the grounds of Wests Mitchelton Junior Rugby League Football Club. Carols in the Park is an excellent way for families to get out together and enjoy the wonderful Christmas tradition of carolling. It is a great way to remember what Christmas is all about. Before leaving, don’t forget to purchase a Lions Club Christmas Cake or Pudding that will be available for sale on the night! There will also be a huge stage with a fantastic line up of entertainers including Birralee Singers, Second Wind Community Band, The Fabulous Lemon Drops (for the kids!), Numb Bum's Ukulele Band, Inversion Vocal Group and other local artists. On Friday 20th September, the Patricks Road State School community gathered to celebrate the unveiling of their new mural ‘Together We Lead,’ that sits pride of place in the new outdoor learning area of the school for all to enjoy.

This unique artwork was created in commemoration of NAIDOC week 2019 and United Nations International Year of Indigenous Languages . It represents the theme that, ‘We are all part of the artwork, we are all part of creating a shared future’. Fittingly, everyone in the school community was invited to be a part of the artwork and place fingerprints on the mural - including The Hon Mark Furner MP, Member for Ferny Grove, administration, teachers, students and auxiliary. This exquisite mural was painted by talented local artist (and Patricks Road State School

art teacher) Kirsten Button using several techniques and illustrates a direct connection to the school. The trees in the mural represent the three ‘Houses’ at the school - Kagoola, Yangoora and Bunya to show belonging. The animals that are depicted originate from the Turubul words that the school was introduced to this year and represent Patricks Road State Schools ongoing commitment to education. Education is powerful and we can all be leaders of change. It is fair to say that this beautiful artwork gels extremely well with the NAIDOC theme for 2019 that was - Voice, Treaty, Truth - Let’s work together for a shared future.

Travelling back to the age of the Trolley Bus Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed

An old Brisbane Trolley Bus. Photo courtesy of Richard Jones.

Many Brisbane residents do not know that the city had a Trolley Bus system operating from 1951 until 13th March 1969, just one month before the last tram operated.

Initially, the trolley buses took over from the small trams that ran from Queen Street to the Gardens and from Queen Street to Gregory Terrace (please see The Hills Echo June 2019 edition). However, the system was extended to provide services from Prospect Terrace to Carina, Seven Hills and Cavendish Road via the Story Bridge, and through the city via Elizabeth Street. A special trolley bus depot was established on Milton Road and this site has now been absorbed into Suncorp Stadium. The buses used electricity, therefore it was a natural match for them to become part of the Tramway system. They were licensed to carry 78 passengers. The first trolley bus was built in Brisbane by a company

specialising in domestic goods (such as refrigerators) called Charles Hope, and was built on an imported Sunbeam chassis. A new style seat was trailed with the design allowing for the aisle seat to be set back from the window seat. The theory being that it was easier for the window passenger to pass the aisle passenger, however it didn’t make a scrap of difference! This firm subsequently built a number of trolley buses for Brisbane City Council (BCC). The buses underwent several changes of colour, originally being painted in BCC silver and finally in a pale apple green colour. Ultimately, a total of 36 trolley buses were in service. Today, only two remain in the museum – No. 1 and No. 34, which is currently under restoration in respect of bodywork. No. 34 was one of many built by another well - known Brisbane Bus Body-Builder – Athol Hedges. The museum takes this opportunity to wish all readers avery Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Please remember the museum will be open on Sundays during the school holidays, which makes out for a great day for the kids! The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by The Brisbane City Council.

An example of the seating style trailed on the Trolley bus that did not have much success!

Serenata Concert Hits All the Right Notes

The Serenata Singers at their Annual Gala Concert The Serenata Singers’ Annual Gala Concert, staged in The Gap Uniting Church Auditorium on 2nd November, lived up to expectations as the highlight of the choir’s concert year. This year’s theme was ‘I’m Gonna Sing’ and featured a program that emphatically demonstrated the many different styles and moods of choral music. It included medleys of songs from the legendary American song writers, George and Ira Gershwin, hits from the classic Broadway musicals, West Side Story and Oklahoma; some Gilbert and Sullivan favourites the music of John Denver sacred music by Cherubini and Fauré;popular tunes from Disney’s The Lion King, and the traditional African-American spirituals Down to the River to Pray and I’m Gonna Sing. The last, a particularly joyous and rousing number, provided a particularly appropriate title for the concert. The choir’s repertoire was complimented by outstanding solo performances by students from The Gap SHS music program. Ava Zoete performed a marimba solo, Sea Refractions, by Mitchell Peters. Maya Sherwood performed Tchaikowsky’s

Oktober Herbstlied (from The Seasons Opus 37) on the piano. Chloe Riley on the saxophone, accompanied by Ros Dargusch on the piano, performed Valse Venite by Rudy Wiedoeft. The final solo performance was a beautiful piano rendition of Joe Hiasaishi’s One Summer’s Day by Chloe Riggien. Rev. Rod Fisher of The Gap Uniting Church reprised his role as compere for the evening, once again demonstrating his wit and aplomb as a host. The choir was led by Jenni Mersiades (first half) and Lois Cutmore (second half), and was accompanied by Prue Gibbs. This was choir director Lois Cutmore’s final gig with the choir for a while as she is taking a well-deserved break for 2020. The choir is deeply grateful for her outstanding contribution and wishes her all the best. As usual, the concert was co-sponsored by the choir and Ashgrove/The Gap Lions Club, with proceeds aiding the choir and the Lions Medical Research Foundation.

Out and About with the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club What Makes Us Tick!

By Paul Ryan

I must be getting old; it’s December again and I haven’t done my Christmas shopping. Aaah! It happened last year, as well as and the year before, so I‘d better get my skates on! Christmas is known as the season of joy, hope and peace. However, for many people, Christmas can be bitter/sweet. The effects of financial stress, expectations from children, family, friends and thinking of loved ones not able to come home for Christmas can take their toll. So, this December, I have a plan to change my mindset in order to improve the way I look at the world, and be a more positive person. I’m not going to call it the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas,’ but ‘The Twelve Days of Gratitude.’ Gratitude is one of the most underestimated of the human emotions. It’s a feeling of happiness that comes from appreciation. So here’s our challenge for you... For the next twelve days in the run up to Christmas (or longer if you’re game): 1. Take a photo of something you are grateful for and write a short comment. 2. Post that photo on your family’s WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook or Instagram. 3. Think about that photo of gratefulness throughout the day. Lions Club members are grateful for what they have and grateful for their friends and families. They have plenty of love to give back to their communities to complete the circle of gratefulness.

Page 18 - December 2019, The Hills Echo

This medicinal emotion of gratefulness elevates our mood and fills us with joy, hope and peace - Christmas. As 71 year old author, Melody Beattie, pens: ‘Gratitude makes sense of your past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.’ Let’s give gratefulness a go and see how this powerful emotion can change your life and the lives of others. Volunteers are always needed to keep The Lions programs going. If you have some time to give back to your community, please contact me, Paul Ryan, at The GVK Lions email: cottontrees@bigpond.com or call 0409 688 675.

The Priority Report

4 Tips for Investing in Property

Investing in property can be a reliable place to store your money, and hopefully make a return. Like all speculation there is always risk. But there are strategies for minimising the risk and getting the most out of your investment. Invest time wisely: Before you invest your hard earned cash, take the time to make sure you make a good decision. Invest time in researching the property market. It’s not just house prices you should be watching; you also need to look at rental returns. Build a team of experts: Your agent will help you get your head around the market. Your broker will help you streamline time investigating finances and help identify mortgage options and real cost of purchasing an investment property. Plan well: You need to plan how to manage property up-keep. Who will manage the property once you purchase? What are your ongoing costs of maintaining the property? Avoid an emotional purchase: Purchasing with your heart may not be a wise move. You need to think about what you can afford, what the market is like and the likelihood of healthy rental returns. Think about what attracts renters.

2019 Wrap

Earlier this year, we saw the housing market slow during the lead up to the federal election with buyers and sellers unsure what would happen if we had a change of government. Our offices current average days on market is 32 days and we have begun to see an increase in stock during this last quarter of 2019. See the below table for volumes as at the end of quarter 3.

2022 Smoke Alarm Countdown

Every rental property in Queensland must meet the new smoke alarm rules by 31st December 2021. For more information about what will make your investment property compliant contact our office on 07 3164 7000.

Securing a rental in a competitive market

If you’re looking to move then you may come up with some tough competition. As we move closer to the end of the year there are a lot of tenants on the move. So what can you do to make yourself stand out from the crowd and secure the rental you want? 1. Find out what’s out there: Do your research on the rental market so you know what to expect when you start looking. 2. Sign up for online alerts: Realestate.com.au allows you to sign up to email alerts for your preferred suburbs sending you an email when new properties come online. 3. See the property as soon as you can: A popular property is likely to get snapped up after it’s first inspection so if you miss out on a viewing you may not get a second chance. 4. Have your documents ready: Pre fill in forms ahead of time so that you can apply for a rental right after an inspection. Make sure you provide as much detail as you can.

Planning for Australia Day has begun! News from the Samford Museum

Planning for our 2020 Australia Day event has already begun. Celebrations will include something for all age groups, eg. vintage cars in John Scott Park, a treasure hunt (yes, treasure when completed!) and cold blacksmithing children’s activities (for a small charge). Assistance with family or local history, photo displays and refreshments will also be available. More details will be outlined in January’s edition of The Hills Echo. The museum always welcomes photos of family outings to Samford and surrounds. Maybe you have photos of relatives who were primary producers or ran a business in the village. Or perhaps there was a special occasion celebrated in the Farmers Hall or John Scott Park that you may have images of and are prepared to have added to the collection. The museum can copy your photos or scans. Alternatively you are welcome to email them to info@samfordmuseum.com.au End of school year picnics were fun events for pupils. The committee bought a case of small red apples and a tin of boiled lollies and minties each. Mothers brought cakes and there were races and jumps to be had! For years, Bunya school children were treated to ham sandwiches, rainbow cake, cordial and bucket ice creams with little wooden spoons which were served from a large canvas container packed with dry ice. The committee purchased a book that the teacher had selected to suit each child. A few of these books from several schools are in Samford Museum’s collection. Other schools spent

the day at Redcliffe swimming and riding large rubber tubes, picnicking with plenty of watermelon. As 2019 comes to a close, we review a very busy year. Thank you for the opportunities to contribute articles to Hills Echo. To those readers who have visited Samford Museum in school groups or as private visitors, thank you for your support. Museum hours will change during the Christmas and New Year holidays. To avoid disappointment please phone President Geoff 0417 691 983.

Ensure your plants flourish this festive season! from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

After the 5th December meeting, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club goes into recess for the holiday season. The first 2020 meeting at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, Trundle Street, will take place on February 6th. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the calendar month except January, commencing after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. New members and visitors are most welcome. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair. For more information please phone Pat, the president, on 3356 1256. The holiday season is not far off and thoughts of those going on vacation must include care of indoor and potted plants if applicable. If there's a neighbor or friend willing to take on this duty, all is well, but often provision has to be made to prevent losing the plants through lack of water. The application of a soil wetting agent to the potting mix about a week before departure is beneficial, and the following hints could be helpful. If you don't have a drip watering system with an automatic timer, gather some two litre plastic soft drink or milk bottles. Punch a small hole in each lid. Fill each bottle with water and place one upside down on each pot plant. The gradual water seeping through the hole should take about a fortnight to use up all the water. Make sure hanging baskets and small pots are well watered by immersing them in a bucket or tub of water until bubbles cease to rise. If you can, your potted plants should be grouped in the coolest room of the house, e.g. in the laundry or bathroom, or in a protected spot outside. When a dense mass of foliage is created, the leaves transpire moisture, which makes a humid atmosphere, reducing the plants' need for water. Another idea is to use a wick made of strips of old panty hose or wool. Thread the strip through the potting mix and leave one end in a vessel of water. The water is drawn to the potting mix. Scrunched-up newspaper left in the bath after it has been thoroughly wet is another helpful way to keep potted plants moist. Leave a little bit of water in the bath tub and place the pots on top of the newspaper. Wishes for a happy, peaceful Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year are extended to all! www.hillsecho.com

The Cabochon Cut from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club

If you are interested in rocks, gems, gem cutting, jewellery making, minerals or just want to learn more about the hobby, then pop along to the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club.

There are many facets to this hobby, one of which can be done in the club’s workshop and that is cabochon cutting. When new members join the club, they are taught how to cut a cabochon. A basic cabochon is generally an oval stone about 40x 30mm in size and about 6-8mm in thickness with a domed top. Jewellery findings can be bought or made which you can fit these cabochons into for wearing as a jewellery item. After shaping on the grinding wheel, the stone is then sanded and polished all over. In order to hold the stone when processing, the stones are attached to dop sticks by way of sealing wax. It only takes about an hour to make a cabochon going from the rough stone to the finished product. Cabochons are generally cut from semi-precious stones such as Agate, Jasper, Petrified Wood, Chalcedony and Chrysoprase. Examples of gems with a Cabochons can be of various shapes and sizes and they can be ‘fancy’ or ‘double sided’ Cabochon cut or whatever shape one wants to make them. However, there are set shapes on templates which jewellery manufacturers make findings for. Templates are used to mark out the shape and size of the cabochon one wishes to cut. COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic

Dear Robin, We were at a bbq. My little 18 month old granddaughter did not want to sit at the table when we were having lunch and she managed to get away from her mother’s grip, started to run away, tripped over, banged her head and put her front teeth through her lip. My daughter in law picked up the screaming child and realised the damage done. My son, on seeing the damage, started to verbally dress down my daughter in law in front of myself and other guests. He yelled at her in an aggressive way and what I thought was an abusive and unnecessary way saying that his wife was not taking good enough care of their child. He did not want his daughter’s face scarred. This should not have happened, they had talked about keeping her safe and she (his wife) was not doing her job properly. My daughter in law was very upset, she picked up the baby and took her inside to tend to her. My son continued to go on to me about it very vocally for some minutes. I got sick of the barrage and told him that I did not like the tone and the way he spoke to his wife and that these types of accidents happen all the time. The way he acted did not help the situation in anyway and was unfair on my daughter in law and her parenting. I then got up and walked away from him. I went inside to let my daughter in law know that I was not happy and did not support my son’s treatment of her or the situation and that I had just told him so. My daughter in law was still very upset but thanked me for my support and understanding. This is not the first time that my son has behaved in this manner, he is often very controlling and uses withdrawal as punishment when not agreed with. My daughter in law is a lovely, quiet obliging woman. She is an excellent mother. My son cannot see that his behaviour is the same as his fathers’ (my ex husband) who my son dislikes intensely. My concern is that his behaviour will jeopardize the relationship. I feel that is my duty as his mother to say something, but don’t know how to approach him without further retribution which he has exercised in the past by cutting off contact from him and his family. He is doing this now and I find this all very upsetting. Should I approach him about it? Barbara Dear Barbara, It’s sometimes hard to find an objective way to deal with such a delicate situation when past experience brings up strong emotional reaction. I think you were right in pulling your

son up about his inappropriate behaviour. You did not say whether you had done this in front of the other guests or had drawn him aside to speak to him privately about it. Speaking privately is the more effective and appropriate way to deal with such a situation. If he was upset or embarrassed about being taken to task in front of his guests, he will feel that he had some justification for his feeling and is more likely to focus on how you did this and not on his abusive behaviour. Supporting your daughter in law in the way you did was in my opinion excellent. It reinforces for her that she does not have to tolerate this and by your modelling, you’ve helped her stand up for herself when future situations arrive. From what you say, he has used the distancing tactic before but has then resumed normal relationship with you. There are some behaviours that cross the line and in all conscience we have to address that even if we fear the consequences, as the cost of silence is too great. You could approach your son in person or by email - whatever you deem more suitable. If you spoke in front of his guests, you could use an apology for that as an opener. Apologies often catch the attention more positively, but do not apologise for what you said. Make this clear. Suggest that if he was embarrassed by your actions, wouldn’t his wife have felt the same, but even more so? Was there not a better and more respectful way to deal with his upset at his daughter’s accident? Name his game, that you know what you risk when you exercise your right to disagree with him and that loss he inflicts on you effects all of you and in particular his daughter. Ask him if this is how he wants to behave and if these are the consequences he wants. Does he remember how it was for him when your ex-husband behaved similarly? Doesn’t he want a more respectful adult relationship with his wife than what you experienced? Put all this very sensitively in question format and let him draw the inferences. If you ‘tell him’, blame or judge in any way, I think he will get his back up even more. You are taking a chance with this, but by this approach you are further explaining your actions on the day, your regret at his distance, your wish for harmonious family relations, and your love of him and his family. You are not wading in uninvited to offer your opinion on the state of the marriage and how you think he will wreck it. However, you are commenting on behaviour of his that you witnessed and were directly effected by.

Robin.

More Opportunities to Commemorate Local Heroes

I am pleased to let you know the Saluting their Service (STS) Commemorative Grants Program has received a funding boost and has been expanded. An extra $10 million over the next four years has been allocated by the Federal Government to honour the service and the sacrifice of those who have served our country. There has been a slight revision in the guidelines and the STS grants will focus on conflicts post the First World War. Digital projects will also be considered for the first time. It would be fantastic to see some more projects honouring our veterans from Samford Valley and across Dickson, so if you have a project in mind, I encourage you to get involved Page 36 - December 2019, The Hills Echo

Throughout the year I have enjoyed meeting and working with many of these groups and I would like to congratulate the contribution of the residents who put their hands up to give their time to the schools, the sporting clubs, the historical societies, seniors groups, Meals on Wheels, Save Our Waterways Now, Men of The Trees and local bush care groups. Their input is invaluable and I thank each and every one of them that give their time to make our ward one of the best in Brisbane. Over the Christmas break the office will be closed from Friday 20th December 2019 until Monday 6th January 2020. On behalf of The Gap Ward team and myself, I wish you all a safe and peaceful Christmas and a very happy 2020.

Christmas is streets a glitter with colour and lights. Children drag adults to view such sights. Christmas is shops full of presents to lure and entice. Parents hoping to find them half price Christmas is festive Carols sung with gusto out loud. Being tuneful is optional in a big crowd. Christmas is good food to enjoy, nibble and eat. Ham, Stone fruit, rum balls – such a nice treat. Christmas is Santa with children on both his knees. Stranger Danger? Nah uh! New toys please! Christmas is patience, sharing, a time to have fun. Playing cricket outside under the hot sun. Christmas is the dash for the pool with a jump that raises a splash and a occasional bump! Christmas is a time for goodwill, peace and a beer. Pity it only lasts until the New Year... The Hills Echo, December 2019 - Page 37

with young Nate’s work, they came out to Grovely State School to conduct a mini workshop and thank him personally. When I was at the school, I was informed that Nate has already helped to plan new signage for Grovely State School’s newly completed car park which was delivered earlier this year.

Storm and Fire Season

Please ensure you have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year this season by making sure you secure the loose items around your home and have an emergency plan in place if the worst happens.

Future town planner

Grovely State School Preppy and future town planner, Nate Haslam received my newsletter and was so excited to see the planned $7.5 million upgrades on Samford Road, he wrote to my office with his own suggestions – and provided a map to boot! I sent the map off to the Transport Minister’s office and the Department of Transport and Main Roads were so impressed
