A New Chapter in Community Access to Knowledge for Local Residents
A new era of community access to knowledge dawned on Saturday, March 9th, with the grand opening of the state-of-the-art Everton Park Library, located at 561 South Pine Road.
The library, a cornerstone of the local community since its establishment in 1965, underwent its last major refurbishment in 1993-94. However, responding to evolving needs and customer feedback, the new library promises to exceed expectations with a range of modern amenities and sustainable initiatives.
Customer research has played a pivotal role in shaping the design and functionality of the new library. Highlighted needs include increased parking, improved accessibility, expanded size, optimized space utilization, and enhanced connection to the outdoors. The result is a contemporary space that prioritizes the comfort and convenience of its patrons.
Key features of the new Everton Park Library include:
Significant Expansion: The library floor space has more than doubled, increasing from the existing 454m² to over 1100m², accommodating a broader range of resources and activities.
Enhanced Parking: An undercover carpark, complete with a new vehicle access driveway off Gearside Street, addresses the need for increased parking capacity.
Versatile Spaces: Multi-purpose areas and meeting rooms cater to diverse learning, literacy, and cultural programs, fostering community engagement and collaboration.
Modern Amenities: The library offers comprehensive
collection spaces for information, learning, and leisure needs, along with a computer lounge and Wi-Fi seating to support digital inclusion.
Child-Friendly Environment: A dedicated children's space encourages early literacy development and a love of reading through interactive learning and play.
Quiet Study Areas: A dedicated quiet room provides a tranquil setting for independent work and study, complemented by varied seating options for collaborative endeavors.
Moreover, the design of the new library incorporates sustainable initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental footprint. Energy-efficient lighting and air conditioning systems, along with strategic building orientation, minimize solar penetration during summer and maximize it in winter. Additionally, roofwater collected by tanks is repurposed for landscape and irrigation purposes, demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship.
The transition to the new library also involved the replacement of the existing building with a turfed park, creating a serene outdoor space for relaxation and recreation. A pathway connection to Fallon Park further enhances accessibility and connectivity within the community.
The opening of the Everton Park Library marks a significant milestone in the ongoing commitment to provide residents with access to resources, knowledge, and community engagement opportunities. The library stands as a beacon of learning, innovation, and sustainability, enriching the lives of individuals and families in Everton Park and beyond.

Locals Celebrate 20 Years of Proud Ownership at Everton Park Servo
By Georgia WrightFor two decades, Everton Park Service Station has functioned as a cornerstone to our community, offering not just fuel, but a commitment to exceptional service. Owners Desley and Les are beyond honoured to accept the credit for their station’s success.
Desley and Les’s involvement in the service station industry began long before the inception of Everton Park Service Station. Their career kicked off in 1994 at Matilda Service Station, located at 725 Albany Creek Road, where they honed their skills and cultivated a passion for providing top-notch customer service. However, in 2004, their path took a new turn when they seized the opportunity to purchase the freehold from Matilda Fuel Supplies, marking the birth of Everton Park Service Station.
Initially branded as Flagstar, the station soon transitioned back to its roots as a Matilda service station. Over the years, the station changed hands as Matilda was acquired by Newman Petroleum, then Puma Energy, and finally Chevron, before being rebranded as Ampol.
With each change in ownership came a commitment to modernisation. Recognizing the need to keep pace with evolving standards, Desley and Les undertook significant renovations to keep the service station up to date. The transformation culminated in the rebranding to Caltex, a move that has been well-received by the community.
Beyond fuel, Everton Park Service Station has evolved into a multifaceted hub, offering a range of services to meet the diverse needs of its customers. Being car enthusiasts, Desley and Les found many ways to embed their passion into the business; the station transitioned from a quick pick-up-and-go food bar to a comprehensive car servicing and repair centre, complete with logbook servicing for new cars. Desley and Les’ vision of a mini dealership service centre, equipped with stateof-the-art facilities, is now automotive heaven for customers!
But Everton Park Service Station is more than just transactional business; it stands as testament to Desley and Les’s deep-rooted connection to the community they call home. Having bought their first home in Everton Park in 1976, they have been active members of the local fabric for decades. Their two grown children, who attended school in the area, have also played integral roles in the family business.
After 20 years of ownership at Everton Park and 30 years at their Albany Creek workshop, Hanos Car Care, Desley and Les’s passion for what they do still shines through in every aspect of their business.
‘It’s always been our passion to provide the best customer service along with the best possible product at an affordable price. We both love being involved with the every-day running of the business,’ Les shares with Echo News.
Looking ahead, Desley and Les have no plans of slowing down. With a deep-seated passion for the industry and a commitment to excellence, they are poised to continue serving their labour of love to locals for years to come.
Les ends on a touching note, ‘We would like to thank all the community for all their ongoing support, along with all our valuable staff. We couldn’t have done it without you.’
Cheers to 20 years, Everton Park Service Station!

A Century of Wisdom: The Secrets to a Well-Lived Life at 102
At 102 years young, local resident Elizabeth Carse, affectionately known as Betty, radiates vitality and shares her simple yet profound secrets to a well-lived life. Betty attributes her longevity and well-being to a combination of faith, good food, exercise, and engaging hobbies.
Betty emphasizes the importance of staying active, stating,‘Any exercise is good, but I have always done chair exercises.’ Her routine includes a variety of activities such as indoor Bowls, Bingo, Hoy, armchair travel, and music concerts. She also indulges her love for literature by devouring numerous novels each month.
Born and raised in Brisbane, Betty spent her early years south of the river in Morningside. Attending Morningside Primary School alongside her sisters Norma and Alma, Betty left school in Grade 7 to care for her mother. Subsequently, she worked in the Nestlé office until her marriage to Herbert, a move that saw her call the northside home after relocating to Kedron. Reflecting on her life choices, Betty shares, ‘Raising my children is one of the proudest things I have done in my life.’ After marrying Herbert, she dedicated herself to raising their four children, cherishing the experience. Now in her golden years, Betty feels fortunate to be surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Betty celebrated her 102nd birthday on March 12, at the Keperra Sanctuary where she now resides. She also has a valuable piece of advice to younger generations, urging

Easing the Path to Home-Based Aged Care Support
Starting the transition to access aged care support in the home can be confusing and overwhelming. Organising assessments, working out what support is needed and choosing a provider to support an older person or their loved one can be confronting.
According to Federal Government statistics, in 2021–2022 about one million people aged 65 and older used home care services. Also, recent research by McCrindle found 75 per cent of older Australians had not taken any steps to ensure they would receive their preferred future care, including the Government-subsidised Commonwealth Home Support Program and Home Care Packages.
Jubilee Community Care can assist people through the steps to receiving aged care, supporting them on their journey to continue living a safe, healthy and active life in their own homes into their later years.
Jubilee Community Care manager of care services, Sharon Forbes, said preparing for aged care support early was vital to make the transition as smooth and stress-free as possible.
‘When an older person is in crisis after a fall or other personal matter, it is often too late to prepare adequately for aged care,’ Ms Forbes said. ‘Options become much more limited, including sourcing a provider with the availability to provide immediate and ongoing care.’ Choosing a provider that builds excellent relationships with people and their families, and one who provides flexible, timely services and resources can be life-changing.
Jubilee, a not-for-profit organisation at Indooroopilly, has been doing just that for 35 years. A recent client survey found 97
percent of respondents were happy with Jubilee as a service provider, 98 per cent said they would recommend Jubilee to others and 100 per cent of respondents to the statement “Jubilee staff treat me with kindness, dignity and respect” agreed with the expression.
Jubilee’s employees can coordinate and deliver services such as domestic assistance, personal care, meal preparation, respite care, shopping assistance, companionship, allied health services and clinical care, and transport to and from appointments or social activities.
‘We also have a great activities program with our clients visiting restaurants, nurseries, historic venues, museums, and other attractions across Greater Brisbane,’ Ms Forbes said.
‘Our clients can also combat loneliness and make new friends without leaving their homes through our regular Zoom sessions where there is never any shortage of good conversation.’

Bush Tucker and Native Trees at MPC
Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre (MPC) has been in operation since 1949, generations of families have cherished memories and a connection to our community kindergarten.
Over the last few years, we have been building our knowledge and understanding of the Indigenous Peoples in this area and are encouraging the children to begin to build a greater Indigenous awareness of the lands and waterways where we learn and play. Our focus on sustainability and the environment acknowledges the First Nations People's care and use of the land for over 60,000 years and the importance for us to learn from them.
MPC is continuing to provide habitat not only for our nurtured and much-loved wildlife that visit our leafy grounds, but we aim to provide opportunities to grow more native trees and bush tucker species in our grounds.
Last year we invited Uncle Bruce Morgan from ‘Murri Tukka’ to visit our space and provide an opportunity for the children to experience eating bush foods firsthand. After Uncle Bruces’ visit, we knew this was the time to take action in our gardens! We were lucky enough to win two community grants to purchase plants for our bush tucker gardens and extend our native plant species.
The children participated in making decisions around which of the bush foods they tried with Uncle Bruce and what they would like planted. We talked with them about the need for sun and not taking up too much of our play spaces, so pots and vertical gardens were used. As we are a community
Kindergarten, we asked for volunteers amongst our parents to come and help with the planting. We have increased our native plant species by nearly 40 in our Kindy gardens from this initiative.
As the year progresses the children will begin to learn about the plants. Each of the Native Bush Food plants are labelled to illustrate what part of the plant is safe to eat or use for medicinal purposes. Our hope, over time we will be able to pick various parts or fruits of the plants for children to sample or use in cooking experiences. At this stage, many of our plants are still in the infancy stage and not ready to produce fruits, but in time and with care we are looking forward to these opportunities. Do you have any Native or Bush Food plants growing in your garden at home? Want to find out more information? We would encourage you to attend community events or Indigenous workshops like ‘Murri Tukka’ to find out what plants are suited to your area.

Run With Rob Now Runs With Warner
By Shane SteeleMost people assume running is a solo activity. However, running club Run With Rob very much believes runners go further together. Many RWR members would attest to feeling empowered from running in, and as, a pack.
Running in a group like RWR offers many benefits to new and long-term runners; it can build commitment, motivation and essentially a sense of belonging in a community that values the ability and goals of all. You may come to runner farther and faster. Most importantly however, it can make running fun.
Such were the motives of Renee West, a self-employed mother of two, when she started a branch of RWR in her local suburb of Warner.
Meeting at Dragonfly Park, on Pallas Parade, Warner (at the same shelter used for Warner ParkRun), the group comes together each afternoon at 5.00pm, Monday to Thursday, for a run lasting about 45 minutes. Sessions may occasionally include hill runs, or speed sets, but are tailored to everyone’s capacity. Renee emphasises no runner will ever be left behind.
‘We have a few who are walkers, and a few who are quite speedy,’ says Renee. ‘We are a group that likes to participate weekly at Warner ParkRun [7.00am every Saturday morning, over a 5-kilometre distance]. So, a lot of our effort goes towards everyone bettering their times there.’
Such an inclusive environment is how Renee has been able to attract runners ageing from 10 to 60+. Do not be fooled though – many of this group have set themselves ambitious goals.
‘This year, we have beautiful Sophie doing her first halfmarathon [21.1 kilometres] at the Brisbane Marathon Festival. Of our ladies, we have Patsy Dutton and Lisa Muller also doing their first half-marathons at the Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival. Janelle Katene (aka Nelzy) will be running her first full marathon [42.2 kilometres] at Sunshine Coast.’
After moving from Hervey Bay, Nelzy considers the Warner RWR group as being her saviour, both mentally and physically.
‘I never knew I would find that same crew [spirit] as Hervey Bay that is inspirational, energetic and fun. The people are all uniquely different but we really complement each other.’
Similarly, the Warner RWR group enjoys coming together to celebrate accomplishments and other milestones, including birthdays, with the first Thursday evening dedicated for such reasons in which members share a plate of treats, as well as good conversation. But feeling supported and building a shared commitment to running is why each member keeps showing up. A sentiment expressed by Patsy during a Monday session of running hills.
‘I didn’t even feel like running today, but once I saw the crew, I felt my energy lift and enjoyed the run. My favourite energy is on the hills; we all pass each other and offer words of encouragement every time. It’s so uplifting and inspiring. Everyone brings their own special qualities to the group.’

A Season of Growth and Cultivation
An update from the Hills Organic Garden
Our summer months have been rather hot and humid with very little grown, eventuating in not much produce to share. Nevertheless, autumn has arrived and will no doubt offer cooler temperatures, which will be welcomed!
There is a lot of work to be done at the garden this month with a view to getting the beds ready for planting. They all need topping up with new soil, compost along with the application of fertiliser followed by a rest period. Planting will take place when the temperatures get cooler to give the young plants a chance to survive and grow.
This year's vegetable planting will consist of broccoli, spinach, radish, snow peas, silver beet, cauliflower, cabbages, zucchinis, eggplant, lettuce, beetroot and tomatoes. It is not recommended to plant the same crop in the same bed as the previous season, so we will be ensuring crop rotation is carried out.
HOG members always remark that this is a fun time of the year, but also a busy one as the newly planted seedlings require regular watering and fertilising.
The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Members meet on a Sunday afternoon during the summer months from 3pm - 5pm. As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance.
You will find the group at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors. Visit hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0415 856 532 for information. The team look forward to meeting you.
Friendship Through Gardening
An update from the Stafford Garden Club
Autumn with its cooler temperatures and lower humidity is ideal for establishing new plants and bringing excessive growth under control. Leaves and the prunings make good compost. Now is the time to fertilize roses, fruit trees and lawns.
Our garden ramble in early March, to see Rob and Ashley’s amazing garden was a great success. 37 members attended. We are planning a bus trip to Kalbar for the Sunflower Festival on the 19th April. Our speaker for the 18th April is a representative from ‘Munch and Grunch Generation’ from Wellington Point. They attempt to provide support and horticultural therapy for their local community. We meet at the OES Hall cnr Kitchener Rd and Bohland St, Kedron. We meet at 9.30am for morning tea, to buy from the wellstocked plant stall and to admire the many exhibits on the show bench. Visitors and new members are welcome. Find us on Facebook at Stafford Garden Club Brisbane or email is staffordgardenclub@gmail.com for more information.
Embrace Nature: Join a Garden Club
An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
Ros and Bruce HamLast month, our Club learned that an understanding of geology is vital for gardening success. Guest Speaker Bruce Ham, from The Brisbane Organic Growers Inc. (BOGI), explained the ways in which geological influences affect soil for gardening. These included:
pH Levels: The mineral composition of the parent material affects the pH level of the soil. Soils derived from limestone or basalt, for example, may be more alkaline, while those from granite may be more acidic. An awareness of this geology helps gardeners choose plants that will thrive in an environment aligning with their pH preferences.
Mineral and Nutrient Content: The geological parent material contributes essential nutrients to the soil. For instance, volcanic soils often provide plants with essential nutrients like potassium. Soils derived from granite will have a different mineral composition than those derived from limestone, contributing specific nutrients to the soil which impact upon plant growth. Knowing the nutrient and mineral profile of your soil means you are better able to make informed decisions about fertilization to address deficiencies.
Our Club members now have a deeper appreciation for how crucial an understanding of geological influences is to optimizing soil conditions for plant growth - thank you Bruce!
In the coming months, our Guest Speakers will cover a variety of gardening topics, including Native Plants and Begonias. For more information, please feel free to email us at mitcheltongc@gmail.com. Our meetings are held at The Enoggera Memorial Hall (Trundle St) on the first Thursday of the month. Doors open at 9:30 am and the $5.00 entry fee includes morning tea - hope to see you there soon!
Did you know?
A sunflower is not just one flower. Both the fuzzy brown center and the classic yellow petals are actually 1,000 – 2,000 individual flowers, held together on a single stalk.
THE FERNY REPORT
by Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny GroveSamford Road / Glen Holm Street Project Update
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have confirmed the commencement of the Glen Holm Street Turning Pocket Project with an expected finish date of early 2025. The upgrades will add a dedicated unsignalised right-turn lane into Glen Holm Street to improve traffic efficiency and safety, and ease afternoon peak congestion. As every motorist who uses Samford Road knows, if you get stuck behind a single car turning right at that intersection, you can be there for ages. This upgrade will fix that issue. (See map.)
During the project there will be temporary traffic changes including shoulder & lane closures, speed limit reductions and short-term traffic disruptions. Pedestrian access on the southern side of Samford Road between Glen Retreat Road and Hoben Street will be closed during the works and pedestrians will be diverted to the footpath on the northern side of Samford Road. Pedestrian access to bus-stop 002064 near Fenwick Park will remain open. Nearby residents and businesses may experience short term increases in noise, dust, and odour during the works. Reversing beepers and flashing lights will be used on vehicles for safety. Also, there will be some disruptions to utilities in the area. Any impacts will be communicated directly by service providers.
I have been also advised the road widening will necessitate the removal of five mature fig trees and four juvenile streetscape trees to enable widening of the intersection. TMR is working closely with Brisbane City Council to finalise an offset plan.

Meningococcal B Vaccinations
We know that Meningococcal B can be lethal. That’s why the Miles Government is investing more than ever before in this state-funded vaccination program to make the usually $100 vaccine free to eligible infants and adolescents.
Last year, 36 cases of meningococcal B disease were reported in Queensland, and at the time of writing, two cases have been recorded this year so far. This is why it is so important to get protected.
Who is eligible? Year 10 students will be among the first to receive the vaccine through scheduled Queensland School Immunisation Program visits. All infants and children under two, and adolescents aged 15 to 19, are also eligible to receive the vaccine.

In March I had the great pleasure of officially opening the new TerryWhite Chemmart in Upper Kedron. The team have worked very hard to create a modern and accessible service in an area which has so far not had enough amenity. This is now changing. The most striking part of the new store is revolutionary 24/7 prescription collection system which will be of great assistance to shift workers and everyone who finds their life just doesn’t have enough hours in the day.
A Trail of Creativity
Artists and artisans from throughout the Moreton Bay hinterland are in full swing preparing for the tenth annual Samford and Surrounds Arts Trail and Open Studios event.
Organised by Creative Samford Inc. this self-drive event promises something for everyone. During the first four weekends in June, artists open their studio doors whilst others collaborate in pop-up art spaces to exhibit their work. Diverse in medium and techniques, visitors will get to see behind the curtains of creative spaces - witnessing first hand artists’ inspirations and techniques. Some artists will be involved for the tenth time and others are joining Trails for the very first time, cementing the event as a vibrant showcase of the best the region has to offer. Dayboro will be spoilt for choice as three creative spaces open up for visitors this year – Running Duck Studio, Pavilion Artists at Dayboro Showgrounds, Dayboro Art Gallery – representing dozens of local artists.
Trails can’t happen without the tremendous support of local businesses and organisations, and we are so incredibly proud to announce Community Bank Samford part of Bendigo Bank as Platinum Sponsor for 2024. Community banking is based on a ‘profit-with-purpose’ model, which means 100% of their profits are returned directly to the community that has generated them. As a supporter of the Arts, the bank last year commissioned a public art mural on the front of their building in Main Street Samford, engaging Creative Samford Inc. members to create the work. The mural will be a special stop on the Trails map, and you will see the unique story of Samford unfold in the five panel art work. We would also like to sincerely thank and acknowledge Gold
Sponsor Kwik Kopy Geebung, and Bronze Sponsors Chelsea Perry at Craig Doyle Real Estate, The Long Yard Larder Samford and Mercure Clear Mountain Lodge, as well as the ongoing support of City of Moreton Bay and Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism [MBRIT].
The Samford and Surrounds Arts Trail and Open Studios runs from Samford to Cashmere and Eaton’s Hill, from Clear Mountain to Dayboro and across the Moreton Bay hinterland from the 1st – 23rd June. Doors open at 10am and close at 4pm. Visit www.creativesamford.com for more information.

LNP Promise - Women’s Economic Security Plan
Women shouldn't be locked-out of a job because they can’t afford the cost of job-seeking.
The LNP has announced, if successful in this year’s election, a $20 million financial assistance package to support women returning to the workforce.
If a woman has left her employment for longer than six months to focus on family care, then we should do everything we can to support her when she chooses the time is right to find a new job. Grants of up to $5,000 will help cover the costs of essentials such as; workwear, childcare, Re-certification and training, CV prep, Technology and relocation.
It’s just one part of the LNP’s Women’s Economic Security Plan and will tackle the economic barriers currently preventing women from re-joining the workforce.
New Everton Park Library Is Now Open
Last Saturday 9th March saw the opening of our new Library, which is a welcome addition to our local community hub in Everton Park. The renewal has also built on improvements to Fallon Park and a car park upgrade at Everton Park Bowls and Community Club.
Student Leadership (LEAP) Day
On 1st March I was pleased to be guest speaker at the Student Leadership Day – this year hosted by Albany Hills State School. This event (known as LEAP Day) has now been an annual occurrence for the last 15 years and sees the student leaders from the cluster of schools - Albany Hills State School, Albany Creek State School, McDowall State School, and Eatons Hill State School join together to learn all about being better leaders.
It’s a pleasure to see these bright young students eager to learn more about becoming good leaders in not only their schools, but communities as well.
