Students Deliver a Boost for the Bilby

Last month was a busy one for Prep students from Albany Hills State School as they took part in the Easter Bilby Adventure Program in conjunction with the Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre.

During the past few months, students have been learning about the plight of the Bilby at school, along with studying the animal and its ecosystem. As the students learnt about how endangered this endemic animal is, the Preps decided to hold a fundraiser. A free dress day was held to raise money for the Save the Bilby Fund. This fund’s aim is to save the Bilby from extinction and to help build an insurance population of 10,000 Bilbies in Australia by 2030. The Prep's did a terrific effort and managed to raise a massive $215.60. On Monday 29th March, students visited the Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre to present a VERY BIG cheque to Peggy and Al from the Save the Bilby Fund with the proceeds from their fundraising. This money will support the breeding and releasing of captive bilbies to a sanctuary surrounded by a predator exclusion fence in Currawinya National Park with the aim of building a population of 400 free-living Bilbies. Al Mucci from the Save the Bilby Fund was impressed by the efforts of the young students and the Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre staff. ‘It’s great to see young Queensland students supporting a critically endangered species iconic to this state,’ said Mr. Mucci. ‘Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre teachers and staff should be proud of this initiative to help educate school communities about the plight of the Bilby. Every cent helps,

N E W N A M E , N E W LO G O, SA M E G R E AT T E A M !

The Easter Bilby Adventure was a great opportunity for Albany Hills students to learn more about the Bilby, and with Easter approaching, we can all make a difference like these wonderful Prep’s.’ The partnership between the BEEC and Albany Hills State School has been a long lasting one with teachers Lisa St John and Lisa Borgeaud-Moo, bringing Preps to learn about endangered species for many years. Bunyaville EEC’s Principal Debbie Ledger explained that their educational environmental programs are fun and young students love learning about the environment and endangered species. ‘Our early childhood programs that are story and drama based, provide an important medium for delivering reallife environmental messages and help empower students to advocate for endangered species,’ said Debbie. Dear Editor, I was concerned about a body of water that pools adjacent to the children’s playground near the intersection of Collins and Francis Roads, Everton Hills. In my mind, the risk of a child drowning was too great, so I made the effort to consult council. I contacted our local councilor Matt Constance who forwarded the matter to Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC). Recently, I was informed by an engineer from MBRC that work would commence in the future to alleviate the problem. This is a great example of community and council working together. I feel the councils swift intervention should be recognised. Regards, Rick Littleboy, Arana Hills

Better Infrastructure Planning Needed For Our Growing Community An update from Ferny Grove & Upper Kedron Residents Association (FGUK RA)

Ferny Grove, Upper Kedron and Keperra have developed over the last 20 to 30 years through many small-medium scale greenfield subdivisions. While the next ABS census will shed light on our population growth, for context we know that in the five years prior to 2016, there were 780 new homes built in Upper Kedron communities such as The Palisades, Cedar Vue, Jarrah Estate and Parks Edge Estate. Combine this with the forecast 865 homes within Ellendale, a range of smaller approved developments and an average household size of 3.4, that’s a lot of additional people in an area that has had little to no new infrastructure to support the growth. FGUKRA calls on authorities and developers to apply more holistic planning and better access to public transport and alternative road connections for our suburbs. Community Voices Heard In November 2020, the FGUKRA lodged a submission to Brisbane City Council against some aspects of the Development Application for Stage 5 of Ellendale at Upper Kedron. (Stages 1 to 4 are already approved).

www.echo-news.com.au

Our primary objections related to the significant altering of the topography of the site, the destruction of its natural waterways, gullies and corridors as well as the number of small housing lots proposed. In early April, Council notified us that they had refused the developer’s application for reasons consistent with our objection, and other objections submitted, with an additional point that the application did not comply with the Bushfire overlay code. Ellendale could appeal the decision or lodge a new application that addresses the Council’s reasons for refusal. Whatever their path, our Association is committed to continuing to work productively with Ellendale on good outcomes for our suburbs. Mt Nebo Road Connection We continue to support general traffic access between Canvey Road and Mt Nebo Road as we believe it will improve traffic distribution and public transport options as our suburbs expand. Waterpark Parking In late 2020, FGUKRA distributed over 800 flyers to users of the water park on Upper Kedron Road encouraging them to contact Council regarding insufficient and unsafe parking. We’ve recently learned of some planned roadworks that may be connected with improving the situation, and will make further enquiries with Council. General Meeting Our next General Meeting is 2pm Sunday 16th May at the Upper Kedron Community Hall. All welcome. Support Your Suburb FGUKRA researches and advocates for residents to all levels of government on local issues. To join for a once only $10 fee, please contact us at fguk.communications@gmail.com

Hockey club honours fallen soldiers

Northern Suburbs Hockey Club is honouring fallen Australian Defence Force members – including one of its former players Ashley Birt – with a special commemorative ANZAC Day jersey.

Norths has a proud tradition of Australian Army personnel in its playing ranks, given the Ashgrove club’s close proximity to the Gallipoli Barracks in Enoggera. The club has paid tribute to Australian Defence Force (ADF) members with its new Diggers Appreciation Day jersey worn by Norths teams in games on ANZAC weekend. Designed by Norths players Jack Tucker and Tim Riggall with assistance from clubmate and Australian Army Captain Aaron Evans, the jersey incorporates iconic ANZAC imagery including poppies, a soldier standing honourably over the fallen, and the Norths Hockey Club players Jack Tucker and Craftsman eternal quote ‘Lest we forget’. Peter Hamilton, of Gallipoli Barracks at Enoggera wearing The special jersey honours Corporal Ashley Birt, a former Norths the special Diggers Day jerseys for ANZAC Day player who was killed on operations in Afghanistan in 2011.

Can’t Keep a Good Team Down

The season got off to a rocky start for Arana Netball Club, with interruptions from rain and COVID. Nevertheless, Arana Netball are a resilient bunch and, with safety plans in place, their youngest teams were able to take to the court on Saturday 27th March. A great day was had by everyone from players and parents to coaches, umpires and officials. Many members of Arana Netball are very good at multi tasking and Zahra, an Arana 12 coach is one of them! Zahra is now in her third year of coaching and, not only does she coach, but she is also a player, an umpire and much loved member of Arana Netball Club. With these years of experience behind her, Arana 12 are in great hands for the 2021 netball season.

A Fiesta of Fun, Food, and Wood Wanted for Family Entertainment Women’s Shed

The Women’s Shed at Ferny Grove is close to launching!

The Hills Carnivale is back for another bumper year of live music, kids’ activities and workshops, rides, markets and food stalls at George Willmore Park, Ferny Hills on Saturday, 29 May.

Running from noon through to 7pm, the free event includes a whole host of activities for little kids through to the big kids (and adults!). Kids will have lots to keep them busy with $2 amusement rides, workshops and games, and roving entertainers to enjoy. Mum and Dad can wander through the dozens of lifestyle markets and multicultural food stalls while enjoying the talents of our local musical acts. A spectacular entertainment program will be performed by some wellknown local acts and children entertainers, including the high-energy Zumba for Kids and Let’s Bollywood Dance, along with Kiana Jazz and Hello Africa, to name but a few. Pony rides and a guinea pig petting zoo? Yes please! Kids will be able to lose themselves in the fun and excitement of Hills Carnivale within the dedicated ‘Kids Zone’. Here, they can enjoy a range of free activities including pony rides, cuddly guinea pigs, face painting, and a kids’ play centre. For more information visit www.hillsfestival.com.au

The steering committee of the Women’s Shed at Ferny Grove has been hard at work on all of the legal processes required to establish the Women’s Shed as a viable community organisation. Documents of Incorporation have been approved and the committee is developing procedures for running the Women’s Shed. Community interest in this project is very high, with 48 women listed as the first Women’s Shed participants and another 70+ on the wait list. Participants will be able to access all the tools available at the Shed after a short period of induction for safety purposes. Women will be able to work on their own projects in a supportive and social environment. The local community can expect to see a sharp increase in DIY projects, home improvements, furniture repair and wildlife boxes once the Women’s shed is open. Although the ladies have access to ample tools, they are seeking small supplies of usable timber. If you have a shed bulging with old timber suitable for small projects and wood turning and you are happy to part with some, they will be ready to turn it into something useful or decorative. If you have any questions you can contact the committee at theshedatfernygrove@outlook.com

Cancer Council Event Back and Bigger than Ever

Ladies and gents, push aside your plans for Thursday 27th May, for it is time to make way for Australia’s iconic Biggest Morning Tea (BMT). The highlight of Cancer Council’s calendar!

Across our country on this date, individuals, organisations, and clubs will be hosting their own Morning Teas to raise muchneeded funds for cancer fighters in our community. How does it work? Easy; register as a host, plan your tea, round up your mates, and have a tea-riffic time raising money. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, 2 0 2 0 ’s Biggest Morning Tea was cancelled due to COVID. But this year, WE ARE MAD is set to host an especially huge BMT at the award-winning Eatons Hill Hotel, located at 640 South Pine Road Eatons Hill. Deemed the largest BMT in all of Queensland, this will also be the 6th annual BMT that WE ARE The 2021 Judge is Mel Buttle MAD have hosted. from Great Australian Bake Off For those keen on attending, prepare to enjoy a scrumptious High Tea made by chefs, washed down with a glass of bubbles or tea or coffee from the hot beverages station. Also, get set for the inaugural Celebrity Cake Decorating Competition, in which you can cheer on your favourite celebrity (this year's line-up is star studded!) The competition features Damien Anthony Rossi, Sofie Formica, Curvy Sammy, and John Lazarou. Not to mention, the 2021

Judge is Mel Buttle from Foxtel’s hit show ‘Great Australian Bake Off’, and the guest compere is Peter Everett from ‘Ready Steady Cook’. In addition to the above festivities, there will be amazing door prizes, raffles, inspiring guest speakers, a fashion parade, and an amazing goodie bag to take home. What more can one ask for? But more important than the awesome festivities planned for this BMT is the motivation behind it. In Australia, 1 in 2 people are diagnosed with cancer before they reach the age of 85. This is why hosting these annual Morning Teas is so vital for our nation’s fighters—it is one step forward in a journey toward change. Cancer never rests. And neither should we when presented with the opportunity to act. To support. To care. A cancer free future stands before us, but only if we choose to chase it. Tickets to WE ARE M A D ’s B i g g e s t Morning Tea are $75pp. Join the community and book your ticket at www.wearemad.net

Hidden Gems at Kingaroy

News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club

As mentioned in last month’s article, a Gem Show was to be held at Kingaroy on the 10th and 11th April. The club combined a visit to this show with a fossicking trip to the Agate fields around the Cloyna Windera area. The trip was very popular with twenty members on the trip including three junior members. There were many stalls selling gemstones and jewellery items, as well as displays by the South Burnett Gem & Fossicking Club who were the organisers of the show. After the club had visited the Gem Show on the Saturday, they travelled back to Murgon and the additional thirty kilometres out to Windera. The Windera/Cloyna area is possibly the second best area in Queensland to find Agate and Jasper. The main agate fossicking area is Agate Creek outside Forsayth in North Queensland. At Windera, the club had permission to fossick in a farm paddock. It was just a matter of walking and watching the ground in order to spot Agate and Jasper amongst the rocks. Members were lucky to have had the trip after the recent wet weather as the rain had washed all the dust off the stone.

Bringing JOY to the Community

The Enhance PT community will welcome you with open arms We have all heard that regular exercise has many benefits. It can assist in preventing many age-related changes to muscles, bones and joints. But were you aware of the broader community benefits? Local business Enhance PT offers exercise classes for the 55+ called JOY. But what is a JOY class? It’s a low to moderate exercise class for ‘Just Older Youth’ that has been designed specifically for people who are 55 and above. The class focuses on increasing balance, strength and flexibility as well as the improvement of general fitness levels. But there are also other equally important social benefits that exercise can bring to your life, as Miranda, owner and operator of Enhance PT has discovered.

‘I’m extremely passionate about keeping our older population moving freely, living stronger and living independently for as long as possible. The surprising outcome of our JOY classes has been not only their popularity but the positive social affect it’s had. I really didn’t anticipate that,’ said Miranda. ‘Some of our clients have reconnected with friends they haven’t seen for a decade, while others have formed new friendships and bonds.’ JOY classes have now become a ‘community within the community.’ Members look out for one another and if someone is missing from class they will text or phone to check if they are okay or need help. Some have now even joined other local community groups at the encouragement of others they’ve met during our class. ‘It’s not often you get to affect such positive change to someone’s life. I feel so lucky to be surrounded by these amazing people who have really invested in their own health and in one another,’ said Miranda. ‘We have been working with this age group for many years which is important. Injuries after 55 can be life-changing and exercise prescription must be tailored to suit our ageing bodies.’ Exercise can assist in reversing changes that may have already occurred, such as increasing bone density and it’s never too late to start. So if you’re looking for a safe, social and fun exercise class surrounded by supportive and friendly locals, why not come along and join JOY? All fitness levels and ages are welcome! JOY classes run every Thursday at the All Saints Church Hall, 86 Cobbity Cresent Arana Hills (across the road from the Arana Hills Library). For further information, visit: www.enhancept.com.au or call Miranda on 0434 401 750.

The Camp Mountain rail tragedy A monthly update from the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society On Labour Day 1947 – Monday, 5 May – a seven carriage train with service number E91 left Brisbane’s Roma Street Station at approximately 8.50am carrying over 200 people.

It was chartered by the social club for staff at the Department of Trade and Customs. They were travelling to a picnic at Closeburn to celebrate the public holiday. At that time, the rail line extended from Ferny Grove out to Dayboro, with stations at Camp Mountain and Samford. After leaving Ferny Grove station, the train climbed the The wreckage of the Camp Mountain rail tragedy Samford Range before coming down Camp Mountain at around 9.50am. It started to pick up speed dramatically, with carriages starting to rock and some passengers screaming out in concern. It suddenly left the rails on a left hand turn and tipped onto its right side, ploughing into an embankment. The crash tragically caused the deaths of 16 people, including the driver and fireman, with 38 others injured. It remains the largest loss of life in an incident on the Queensland rail network. TAX MATTERS

from TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills

The deadline to lodge your tax returns is fast approaching! May 15th is the deadline; if you have old returns to lodge and you have been contacted by the ATO come and see us.

If you feel you may have a debt as a result of lodging old returns, or even a current return, the ATO has stated it may release you from payment of particular tax debts where paying those debts would leave you not able to provide for yourself, your family, or others for whom you are responsible. This includes providing for items such as food, accommodation, clothing, medical treatment, and education. If you feel you may be in this situation talk to us and we can talk to the ATO on your behalf and come to some agreement. For those who employ staff or contractors, remember that the superannuation guarantee levy increases to 10% from 9.5% on July 1st, 2021.

If you are using your motor vehicle for work purposes, it is important that you claim the correct percentage and not overstate the amount to be claimed. You can use one of two methods to keep track of your usage: 'The Cents per Kilometre' method or 'The Logbook' method. The link below gives clear guidelines on how each method works. Remember, travel to and from work is not deductible. https://www.ato.gov.au/uploadedFiles/Content/IND/ Downloads/Car-expenses-factsheet.pdf Give us a call on 3351 6111 with any queries. TaxArana

Raising Children’s Voices

Welcome to ‘Grab that Grant’, a monthly column brought to you by local grants guru, Carolyn McCall. Carolyn is the founder of the Little Project Management Company, and has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry. This month, Carolyn chats about the importance of really listening to the children in our community

I sit on the committee of my son’s kindergarten, Willmore Community Kindergarten & Preschool, and it is one of those places that every time you enter, you come away with a little piece of magic. Willmore is not just a kindergarten in the community, but a kindergarten for the community, enhancing the voices of young people to support and care for our community. My three-year old son, Coen, tells me that he shows the teachers and children how to do things that they don’t already know. He is so proud of himself that he knows really important things and gets to share his knowledge with others. He is listened to. He has a voice. I have been writing for The Hills Echo for about six months, and I was drawn to this newspaper because of their ethos of supporting our community. I have met many amazing women in the community, but, The Hills Echo is a whirlwind of ideas, knowledge, and community spirit. This month The Hills Echo is launching, ‘The Little Echo’, giving our youngest citizens a big voice. And this is a big moment. Young people from kindergartens, schools, and organisations like Willmore, will be given a platform to share their voices with the community through The Little Echo. This is the start of something powerful and meaningful within our community. I personally have heard stories of resilience, empathy and understanding from children that have really made me stop, think, and make a change. My niece, Chloe, describes her talents as being ‘nature, drawing and love’, and she enjoys new experiences in which she feels brave. She really wants other children to know that you can love and be proud of your autism. But most of all, that you can be yourself. I want everyone to hear her message. My nephew, Jake, and his nine-year-old friends are planning to grow their hair for two years, for Shave for a Cure, to help children and people who have Leukaemia. I want everyone to know that there are children like these boys that not only think about soccer and Minecraft but also about how to make the world a better place. So, I say watch this space and I call on everyone to join me in: • Consulting with children and young people in all your projects and policies. • Taking the time to free our own voices, as an example to our young people. • Talking to children and young people about the really important things and stop for a moment to really listen.

School Holidays: Baby Bird Boom School holidays are really quiet for my family, but fortunately this holidays we have had an outbreak of babys birds! My family and I and have pet budgies and occasionally a pair will get together and lay an egg. This week (12th of April) we were lucky enough to welcome baby “Philip” into our family, we named him after the late Prince Philip. Philip is a huge, healthy and hungry little fella who is already adored by mother “Sky” and father “George”. George is a massive, green British budgie who is not afraid to bite, Sky is a pied, sky-blue dominant Australian budgie and was one of my very first birds. Also recently, and unexpectedly we now have an uncountable amount of tiny baby king Quails. King Quails are a small, chicken-like bird that live on the floor of our avary. Quails only grow up to about the size of approximately you’re hand and are much like real chickens for they eat veggie scraps and their eggs are edible (and great for salads). The parents of our baby’s are father “Ani” mother “Padmey” and other mother “Torchic”. This is our best clutch (hatching) of Quails. I think that tops it of, as you can see breeding and taming birds is a fun, exiting and adorable distraction for the holidays. Erin S, Age 10

Proudly Supporting MP The Little Echo The Hills Echo, May 2021 - Page 21

Welcome to the first issue of The Little Echo! We believe children are natural connectors and want to have a voice on social, environmental and human issues that affect our community. We also know they like to have fun, play, be creative and spark joy. The Little Echo is a platform that gives our community's youngest citizens a big voice and a place to showcase their creative talents. This special feature is filled with local news, stories, photos and thought provoking content all from the children’s perspective. Our dream is to turn The Little Echo into its own monthly publication solely produced by a team of young people. We hope to establish a young editor program with a group of young people aged 16-25, who will mentor students interested in a career in journalism, creative writing, photojournalism, print media, desktop publishing and digital marketing. We are extremely excited about creating this platform for our young people as well as the opportunity to help connect our community.

As part of a recent presentation I had to do at school, we had to choose a significant historical location in our local community to research and I chose The Brisbane Tramway Museum. I was very lucky to go down and spend a morning at the Museum with Graham and Glenn who answered all my questions, showed me around and shared their favourite things about the museum with me. The Brisbane Tramway Museum is located on Tramway Street, Ferny Grove opposite the Police Station. It is called this as it contains a collection of historical trams, photos, stories and uniforms of Brisbane’s 85 years of Tram Service. The museum land was originally a dis-used depot and is 10 acres in size. It moved to this location in 1974 after trams stopped running in 1969 but the official opening wasn’t until the 10th August 1980. The track at the museum is 600m long and the trams run between 10-15km per hour here. The museum is open on Sunday afternoons, as long as the weather is good, they are too old to come out in the rain. In the past the original museum site had 2 buildings, a large water tank and a rundown cabin, the equipment was put in one shed and the 2 oldest cars were put in the other, unfortunately all the rest had to be left outside. Today the museum has 2 very large tramsheds, a restoration shed, a woodwork and metalwork shed, both for repairs and a display building. The museum has 24 trams - 23 Brisbane trams and 1 from Sydney, but they only run 6 trams at the museum but they would like to get more finished being restored.

Callum with Brisbane Tramway Museum volunteer, Graham

The oldest tram running at the Museum is #47 and the youngest is the #554 which was the last ever tram to run in Brisbane in 1969. The purpose of the museum in the past and now is the same, so people can come and see what trams were like and its way of transport. The museum is important to our community to preserve and operate Tramcars for the people of Brisbane along with details of its history and so people like myself whose Great Grandfather, Gerald Sydney Cochrane was a Tram Conductor, I can go and learn all about what he did for his job. The Significance of the Battle of Lone Pine

Today I am here, sitting on my comfortable lounge, in my nice cool air-conditioned house. I am writing this on my laptop, whilst Googling and watching YouTube. Until today, I took all of this for granted. It is hard to comprehend, why young people got on a boat and sailed halfway around the world to fight for our freedom. They sacrificed their time, careers and thousands gave their lives to protect our future. For four long days in August 1915, the ANZACs went to battle with Turkey. The battle was later called the Battle of Lone Pine. It is reported that the Turkish troops removed all but one Lone Pine Tree from the area. The Turkish troops used the knocked down Pine Trees to barricade their trenches and protect themselves. The purpose of the Battle of Lone Pine was to distract the Turkish from the Front in Gallipoli. The ANZACs bravely accepted their mission, fighting heroically and courageously to capture the barricaded trenches. During the battle two thousand brave ANZACs and seven thousand Turkish lost their lives. Seven ANZACs were later awarded the Victoria Cross, for their indisputable bravery. However, all the ANZACs at Loan Pine risked their lives to defend our country and its need to thrive. Lone Pines (Aleppo Pine Trees) are like time capsules. The majestic Aleppo Pine Trees stand alone at ANZAC war memorials around the world. They signify the history of the ANZACs and the Battle of Lone Pine. The Aleppo Pine trees originated from Turkey. Some of the ANZACs collected pinecones from the trenches at Lone Pine and sent them home to their grieving, worried families. The families then propagated the pinecone seeds and planted them. Most of the stunning Aleppo Pine trees propagated from the pinecones are still alive today. The battle of Lone Pine is significant to all Australians and Newsreaders because the ANZAC war memorial in Turkey is located at the site of The Battle. Thousands of ANZACs who lost their lives during the battle are buried at the memorial. They have been laid to rest under a Lone Pine and next to the trenches they captured and defended. Even though we face our own battles from time to time, every year on 25th April wegather to reflect the heroics of the ANZACs. Australians and New Zealanders from around the world unite in peace and solidarity at war memorials in Turkey, Australia and New Zealand to remember the ANZACs that gave their live for us. I still don't understand why these young men gave up their lives and their futures. But all I can say, is that they were braver than I ever will be. I also, respect them for their courage. Lest We Forget. www.echo-news.com.au

At Willmore Kindergarten, we revisited our discussions about trees and the earth through reading a story called Hello, Mr World. In the story two children are pretending to be doctors and their patient is the earth. They discover from checking the earth's temperature that it is too hot. The ice is melting and the arctic animals are finding it hard to survive as their habitat is changing. After we finished reading the story and had a discussion as a group, the children headed off to play. Below are some of the wonderings and ideas that came out of this discussion. Clara said, "The world is sad because it is sick. It needs some trees to make it better." At the bottom of her picture was a white space she explained, "this is the ice for the polar bears to live. I don't want them to die." A group of children went into the block corner space. We had wondered as a group how the tree in the block corner could get water from the river which was a long way from it. Tom thought we could ask the animals to hold water in their mouth and take it to the tree. Georgia F decided to make the river larger because the rain had come. Henry was playing at the table with coloured blocks and put the yellow blocks in front of his eyes. He said, "Hey. I am being the sun. I'm the reason the world is so sick." Jakobi led some thinking at the light table where there were some polar bears and ice He said, "The penguins home is melting. Little penguin can't swim. Mummy will protect them. She is swimming with her babies." Georgia B "The penguin made a new home of ice because their other home melted. This one (points to the polar bear) has had his home melt too. The penguins home is melting." Georgia F "I can build another home for them. It is not good that their home has melted. Come on penguins, jump out and come into your new home." Because of the rain Daisy made many beautiful flowers grow. Flowers could help our earth to cool down as well. As we played we were wondering about polar bears and one of the children asked, "Can polar bears live in water without ice?" I replied that I didn't know but that we could research this question. We looked at some clips of polar bears moving through ice and were amazed at how agile they were and how far they could swim. The children relate their own experiences to that of the world. They show an innate empathy for living things and want to make things better. This is such a great example of how the children use many languages of learning to make sense of their world. From paint, to blocks to light and of course stories. This was also our first step into the research area. Once the children learn that anything they are interested in we can research we are able to go much deeper with our thinking and learning. The children have continued this line of thinking by researching the 17 UN Sustainability Goals. We are looking at the goals individually and working out ways we can make a difference in our own homes and community. By the children and Mrs Linda Meinicke, Director of the Willmore Kindergarten and Preschool.

The children of Gaythorne Community Kindergarten have developed a stronger understanding of what sustainability, reusing and recycling is, not just cans and bottles. They also are developing a sense of community, sharing and caring for and about others, even though they have never met. Lorna and Chester are quite well known at the kindy and stories of their amazing kindness and generosity during 2020 are often spoken of. Lorna and Chester, an elderly couple who live at Beachmere, belong to Woodies - a woodworking community group from Beachmere, provide the children with the resources to work with. A variety of timber pieces, shapes, sizes and textures were set up on the verandah, some pieces had designs on them, some were rough and others smooth. The children collected hammers and screwdrivers, nails of varying sizes and loads of screws. They also poured out some PVA glue and collected glue brushes from the art studio. Instantly they went to work. When asked if they needed any help, the look of disgust was obvious. Piper said, “Miss Glenda, I am all over this! I know exactly what I am doing and what I want to do. I have a plan in my head.” There was nothing more I can add to that except to say, “Go for it, girl!!”

the glue. Using a brush he painted a strip of glue onto the U shape and attached it saying, “There you go, all done. You can use it to race the cars, you just have to wait for the glue to dry. I saw a picture like this in a book,” he told us all. The group that had gathered around looking and listening were most impressed with Lachy’s explanation and capabilities. When we had finished and tidied up our workspace, Edith asked, “Why do Lorna and Chester give us timber?” Arthur replied “Because they believe in reusing and recycling just like us and Lorna collects all of the timber pieces from out of the wood bins that no-one else wants and she saves it for us. Chester is very smart. He is old but he is smart and he has lots of tools for working with wood. He makes us special things. I think they are Miss Glenda’s friends or maybe they don’t know any other little kids that like to work with wood or recycle like us. We are very lucky.” By the children and Miss Glenda MacDuff, Director of the Gaythorne Community Kindergarten

Arthur could not contain himself when he found some pieces of timber with a cutout shape of a bunny in the middle of each piece. “Look, Miss Glenda, it is a bunny and it is nearly Easter.” He was so excited!! He called out to everyone, “See what I have found. I don’t think Lorna and Chester meant to leave these treasures in here, maybe we should return them, maybe I could ring them and tell them so they don’t get upset and think they have lost them. Oh, I love these, can I please decorate at least one, please?” He had several and held them up for other children to also take one - they quickly disappeared. Oliver joined us holding a circle piece of timber. He held it up in Arthur’s face distracting Arthur’s train of thought. “What’s that?” Arthur asked Oliver. Oli responded saying, “I don’t know, but look,” he pointed to the design stamped on the circle. Lachy joined the boys saying, “I know what that is, it is for putting your cars on. It is a race track. You can add some more wood and make a ramp for them to go up and down.” He walked over to the timber collection and took out a piece that was a U shape. He put the circle of timber on the table and the U on top of it. “I need the glue,” he said, pointing to it but talking to Oliver. He handed Lachy

The Queensland Choir’s musical director Kevin Power says US composer Dan Forrest’s internationally acclaimed Requiem for the Living, which juxtaposes humanity’s struggles with the wonders of the universe, is a timely choice for the choir’s first performance in more than a year since COVID shutdowns. “After the chaos and suffering around the world during the past 12 months it seemed particularly appropriate to start singing again with this Requiem for the Living since it is not only a requiem (or plea for peace for the dead) but also a plea for rest for the living from the pain and suffering of everyday life, something which we have seen a lot of in the past 12 months,” Mr Power says. The work offers three different glimpses of the heavens and Earth, full of God’s glory, inspired by images of space from the Hubble Space Telescope, views of the Earth from the International Space Station, and back down to Earth where cities teem with the energy of humanity. The concert will also feature acclaimed Brisbane-based soprano Leanne Kenneally, an award-winning Queensland Conservatorium of Music graduate who has performed with Opera Queensland, Opera Australia and internationally with Germany’s Cologne Opera. The program will include Mozart’s Overture to La finta giardiniera and Exultate Jubilate and Gluck’s Dance of the Blessed Spirits as well as Requiem for the Living, all accompanied by the Sinfonia of St Andrew’s. Red Hot Second Birthday Party

It was time for celebration at Red Rooster Arana Hills earlier this month with the restaurant celebrating its very special second birthday under the management of Franchise Partners and locals Chris and Jenny Ianetta.

There was a fried chicken branded cake, balloons and all the party trimmings with staff, family and friends recognising two years of being a part of the local community and satisfying the chicken cravings of The Red Rooster team with their their customers. branded birthday cake Chris and Jenny have dedicated themselves to building the reputation and profile of their business whilst embedding themselves into the local community with numerous significant sports sponsorships. These include the Brisbane Paralympic Football Program, Westside Grove FC, Mitchelton FC, Arana Netball, Phoenix Netball and Arana Ascot Hockey. They also support numerous local causes and charities. This second birthday celebration was a very happy occasion for the Ianetta family and was particularly sweet given that their first birthday event had to unfortunately be canned due to Coronavirus restrictions.

Learn about the Good Men of Padua College

Padua College is the only school in Australia under the care of the Order of Friars Minor. Inspired by the teachings of St Francis, the Franciscan Friars established Padua College as a school to cater for boys from Year 5 to Year 12. Over sixty years on, the College has grown to 1,400 students and while there have clearly been some educational changes

over this time, we still hold our Franciscan heritage very close to our heart. The College offers a holistic education including an engaging religious formation and pastoral care program, an inclusive and comprehensive curriculum, many co-curricular opportunities and a developmental outdoor education program. We inspire and engage our learning community by being leaders in boys’ education through a learning culture underpinned by self-efficacy and excellence. We deliver dynamic, innovative pedagogy in the three phases of learning from Year 5 through to Year 12. Here at Padua we embrace change, but we also recognise the need to hold true to things that we hold as important pillars for a good education. We introduce our students to a wide range of belief systems and multi-faith disciplines, we encourage debate and discussion, and then introduce our students to a Catholic and Franciscan world view. This vision is permeated by our values of Joy, Courtesy, Humility, Simplicity and Peace. At Mount Alvernia College the Gospel values of Love, Compassion, Simplicity, Peace, Trust, Joy, Respect, and Service are animated in all that we do. In a world of uncertainty, we are committed to helping our students develop right relations with self, each other, and with their earth and God. Our accomplished academic and support staff are dedicated to ensuring that your daughter may discover her gifts and talents by creating the environment she needs to build confidence and curiosity. We believe in cultivating a learning environment which values and encourages active listening and inquiry and one that empowers individual aspiration. We encourage our students to strive for excellence in all aspects of academic, cultural, and sporting endeavours and, importantly, to do their personal best always. Following in the footsteps of our foundress, Elizabeth Hayes, we place value in acts of service and community. An array of opportunities is available for our students to become actively involved in works of social justice and outreach. We wish for our students to be courageous voices in the face of injustice and for them to act with kindness and tolerance always. As we edge towards the middle of the 21st century, there is a need to dial up for our young people their skills of communication, critical and creative thinking, and ethical leadership. At Mount Alvernia we are future-focussed and strive to instil these important soft skills throughout each of our programs. I hope to meet you at Open Day, where you will see us in action. The Museum Items Have Arrived at MPC! Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre (MPC) values children investigating, discovering and asking questions. We subscribe to Queensland Museum and each fortnight, new items arrive. It provides a wonderful opportunity for children to look closely, wonder, discover and build knowledge. When the first items arrived we talked about ways to look after them carefully. Some items are models or preserved animals which have prompted conversations about frogs, possums, a bilby, bats, gliders and many others. Aside from investigating each interesting item, we have conversations around more abstract concepts such as what’s alive, real and preserved. As well as building knowledge about individual displays, the children are practising thinking scientifically. The children share what they know, work out questions to investigate, research and share new knowledge. When researching, a variety of sources are utilised including books, internet and asking experts, including helpful scientists at the museum. The children develop an enormous range of skills aside from gaining new knowledge as they build their thinking, problem solving and communication skills. MPC is holding an Open Day on Saturday 5th June from 9.30am to 11.30am and the whole community is invited. This is a great opportunity for prospective parents to check out the wonderful facilities this local kindergarten has to offer. For more information call 3355 2535 or visit the website www.mpc.net.au

Digital Disconnection

By Susanne Jones, Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD

As age increases, digital inclusion tends to decline, but there is help at hand for those who may be lacking in confidence online.

If recent events have taught us anything, it is the importance of accessible online communication. While social distancing measures have amplified the requirement for us to be digitally savvy, there is ample evidence to suggest the transition by education, information, government and community groups to move greater parts of their services and utilities online began some time ago. Digital literacy and user capability is an important aspect of older Australians increasing their online presence yet research shows that many of those aged 65 or over are struggling to adapt to this new digital environment. Fear of the unknown One of the biggest barriers to getting seniors online is apprehension, with 75% of people in this age group concerned about their privacy online. This is not without reason. Australians aged 65 or over made more than 26,400 reports to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Scamwatch in 2018. The peak body for senior advocacy, COTA, says moving government service delivery and communications online will increase the potential for scamming to target older Australians as email becomes the expected method of engagement and communication from government. Building digital confidence But the news isn’t all bad. The report, Understanding Digital

Page 36 - May 2021, The Hills Echo

Behaviours in Older Australians also concluded that many older Australians are interested in developing and acquiring new digital skills such as privacy settings, backing up files, safely downloading files, securing online transactions and using Wi-Fi safely. While face-to-face learning is the preferred method of acquiring new skills, the Commonwealth government launched a $50 million program to improve the digital literacy and online safety of Australians aged 50 years and older. Set up to build skills and confidence, the free program includes information about protecting personal information, using security settings on devices, identifying scams, conducting secure online transactions and connecting with others through social media safely. Dedicated network partners provide support in the basics of getting online - including topics such as e-safety, using email, connecting with family and friends using the internet, online shopping, online hobbies and managing your data. Good Things Foundation manages the Be Connected program which has linked up with around 3,000 network partners across the country including community centres, libraries, men’s sheds, Indigenous community groups, disability organisations, employment service providers and non-English speaking community groups. The initiative has enabled older Australians to become more independent and less reliant on family members, whilst also affording seniors the skills to connect with friends and relatives living elsewhere. They are also able to gain confidence and learn how to look out for scams. As of June, 350,000 people have been supported through the program. Good Things’ Jess Wilson says, to ensure more seniors have access to digital literacy tools, it’s important that digital literacy programs like Be Connected be allowed to continue for at least the next five years so we can help more people. ‘We know there is more work to be done to support older Australians, people on low incomes and people looking to get back into the workforce to improve their digital skills over the coming years as the country recovers from the pandemic and adjusts to the new digital world,’ said Jess. ‘COVID-19 has shown just how important it is for people to be digitally literate so that they can better connect with family and friends, maintain their independence, find work and access government support services online.’ Australian seniors or those living with disability who need to access support to learn digital skills free of charge should do so via: • Be Connected website: www.beconnected.esafety.gov.au/ • Be Connected Helpline: 1300 795 897 www.echo-news.com.au

The cost is $30 for the two course lunch and tea and coffee. The guest speaker is Amanda Harvey from Queensland Rail who will no doubt inspire the ladies to enjoy the benefits of rail travel, especially as holidaying in Queensland is a great choice in the present environment. As usual, there will be the lucky door and raffle prizes to support the Learning for Life students. Phone Carol on 3355 5349 by noon Monday 31st May if you are attending. A Road Trip to Remember

An update from the Newmarket VIEW club A special outing was arranged for up to 20 members of the Newmarket VIEW Club to visit the Anzac Memorial Galleries.

Members remembered the sacrifices of our Defence Forces during the wars engaged since the first Anzacs in World War I. The ladies found it a very interesting and informative morning followed by a social lunch. The Newmarket VIEW Club is part of a network of over 300 clubs and 15,000 women throughout Australia. Despite the challenges of last year, VIEW members were extremely creative when it came to staying connected – while socially distancing. They organised online fashion parades, face mask sewing bees, and Zoom social events, to name a few – all to raise money for children experiencing disadvantages. Members used raffles and donations to raise funds to continue to support the six students following The Smith Family’s Learning for Life Program, by sponsoring their school activities. These children were among the hardest hit during school shutdowns, as many didn’t have the right tools they needed to learn from home. For more details about the Newmarket VIEW Club, email us on newmarketview@ gmail.com or ring our president, Heather, on 0437 343 163. The ladies on the trip

Gardening

HOG is a Hive of Activity this month

From The Hills Organic Garden C ommunity Wow, what a wonderful lot of rain we have had recently. It‘s so great for the garden and the preparation of our beds for planting. The other great benefit is that we are able to conserve town water by not having to water so frequently. Our jobs over the next few weeks will be preparing the beds for planting by adding additional soil, compost and fertilizer. It is best to start planting before the weather gets too cold. This way, the soil is still warm enough to encourage the establishment of good root growth. At the moment our herb garden has flowering basil which is attracting the bees, society garlic (which has beautiful lavender flowers which are edible), thyme, tarragon, mother of herbs and garlic chives. Some vegetables are best grown from seed to avoid transplant shock. Carrots, peas, beans and radish are best grown from seed but must be thinned out to allow enough space to grow and mature. Snow peas, beetroot, silver beet, cauliflower, cabbages, broccoli, spinach and tomatoes will be on out list of plantings and we look forward to getting them into the ground and watching them grow and mature. The members of HOG are very proud of their Community Garden and strive to keep it looking tidy and an inviting place to come and work, as well as to welcome visitors.

Marvelous Mulch & May Gardening

From the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club

Unfortunatley, the April meeting of the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club had to be cancelled due to COVID. However, the guest speaker, Craig Duncan, a representative from Rocky Point Mulching, has kindly agreed to deliver his talk at the garden club meeting on 3rd June at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. His topic is ‘General Gardening’. Rocky Point Mulching produces all kinds of potting mixes and soil conditioners as well as a range of mulches. When other representatives from the company have been guest speakers they have had products for those present to buy and this was a great help to garden club members. The meeting commences after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. Access to the hall is via Trundle Street, Enoggera and it is close to public transport and is wheelchair friendly. May is the month for planting fruit trees, pruning geraniums, inspecting Azaleas for petal blight fungus which last year would have caused buds to turn brown and drop prematurely. A fungicide treatment commenced this month should control this problem. Don’t be alarmed if you see a purple discolouration on the foliage of evergreen plants. This is just an adverse reaction to the cold evening temperatures. Mother’s Day occurs this month and a flowering plant would be a long lasting gift. If you allow tip cuttings to dry out for several hours before potting, this helps them strike easily. The club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month and has vacancies for more members. For more information please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256 Page 38 - May 2021, The Hills Echo

The Hills Organic Garden The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier, so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around their beautiful garden. Members meet on a Sunday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm. Some members also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. The garden can be found at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for juniors. For more information, visit www.hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0407 582 980.

Design with Natives

An update from The Ferny Grove Garden Club

The Ferny Grove Garden club is delighted to be meeting again this year.

New members and visitors are very welcome to join them at their next meeting on Friday, 28th May. The guest speaker will be Mr Lawrie Smith, and he will be chatting about ‘Designing with Natives - Native Gardens.’ Lawrie has built his career around a strong personal belief in two major areas: • The unique quality and value of the Australian environment, • The provision of quality open space facilities for the community. The club meets on the last Friday of each month at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton at 1pm. The guest speaker starts their presentation at 2pm, followed by afternoon tea. Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic

Dear Robin I am in a state of disbelief and shock. My partner Daryl of ten years walked out two weeks ago. I could not get any sense out of him as to why he was leaving beyond the statement that he was sick of playing second fiddle and that he hoped I would be happy with my dogs. I really am confused, I did not think there was anything wrong with our relationship. Just the usual disagreements but we never had any real fights to speak of like I hear some couples do. I would get upset about the amount of time he would spend on the weekends with his mates rather than spend time doing stuff with me like going to the park or the beach with our boys (the dogs). We have no children and our dogs were, I thought, the centre of our lives. We have always been animal lovers but Brady and Rex are really amazing. Daryl would sometimes joke and say if he wanted to get any affection he would need to grow four legs. But the boys are so intelligent and obedient. All the time and effort I have put into training them over the last four years has been well worth while. They are such a delight to be with. I don’t know what I would do without them, that is why I am so surprised that Daryl would just up and leave just like that without any consideration about how it would affect the boys – let alone me. He is so selfish, I am at a loss to understand him, he said it is over and he does not want to talk about it. I would appreciate some insight as to why you think Daryl has behaved in this way. Dear Britt There is definitely a communication issue going on here. You say you are both animal lovers but how much and when in

Daryl’s experience did it become too much and detrimental to the primary couple relationship. Were you aware that this was happening. Here are the key statements. “The boys” were the centre of yours and Daryl’s lives BUT Daryl said he was sick of playing second fiddle and “if I want to get any affection I would need to grow four legs”. What do these statements tell you about the differences each of you see as to what is the centre of your life. When I say this is about communication, it is more to do with what you have not listened to or said clearly enough to each other over time. Have you questioned yourself as to the truth of Daryl’s jokes? Were his needs (affection) overlooked in favour of the dogs? If so, why, and what is that about for you? Have “these boys” had more love and attention than any of the pets you may have shared before? If so, has anything happened within their time frame with regard to decisions being made or life event/changes that have occurred that drove you to seek solace, comfort or distraction through the boys, from what was challenging you. For Daryl affection may have been as important as the time you may have wanted him to give you and not his mates. Did either of you talk about what you really wanted from the other in this regard beyond criticism or jokes about the lack of that need being met. Daryl might have wanted to spend quality time with you, but with just you, not as second fiddle to the needs of “the boys”. Maybe the “mates” were his solace and diversion too. Go back over the history of the relationship and take note of behavioural changes. What was happening in or outside the relationship that could have triggered these behavioural changes. When triggered, did each of you get into your own defensive corner, and do more of what you were already doing that upset your partner because he was doing more of what had upset you. If we don’t talk about and sort out what are our fears and needs beyond this reactivity the cycle eventually spins out of control and relationships crash. The “two boys” ARE dogs. Who or with what, do you want to have your primary relationship. Be clear and honest with yourself about this and with Daryl or any potential future partner. You are perfectly free to choose animals over humans (not a bad thing sometimes) but you need to let the humans in life know that so that they are then freed to choose what they want. Tim Mander MP laying a wreath on ANZAC Day at the Gaythorne RSL ANZAC DAY It’s great to be back to normal as we gathered at local RSL’s and war memorials to commemorate the legacy of the ANZAC’s. It was an honor to share this special day at Gaythorne RSL with those who have served and continue to serve. It was encouraging and heartfelt as our Veterans had the freedom to march and share the day with close family and friends. While some people still chose to commemorate personally at home, or light a candle on their driveway, we came together to pause and remember those who lost their lives and made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. I want to thank those who are currently serving our country today and for the families that support their loved ones in service. Let us never forget those who gave so much – and let their courage and dedication be an inspiration for us all.

Dickson News

from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON

A Message from Peter I would like to provide an update on a recent change in portfolio from Home Affairs to Defence. I’m incredibly proud to have been the inaugural Minister for Home Affairs in its modern form. It has been a privilege to work together with the men and women in the Department of Home Affairs, led by Secretary Mike Pezzullo, to keep Australians safe. Together we have thwarted 20 terrorist attacks, invested record amounts into ASIO and AFP, seized record amounts of drug importations and worked day and night to keep women and children and the broader public safe from threats. There has also been exceptional work done to protect our children and prevent child exploitation. A game changer has been the Coalition Government’s $70 million investment to establish the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation. The men and women there who save and protect children on a daily basis are world leaders in their field. Stamping out the exploitation of children has been our greatest achievement in this portfolio. This is a battle we must win and I will continue to be a strong ambassador for this cause. The Australian Border Force under the Coalition have halted the evil people smuggling trade, stopping the boats and preventing deaths at sea. Under my watch, there has not been a successful boat arrival or a death at sea. I have worked diligently to clean up Labor’s regional processing mess. The Government has removed every child from Nauru and PNG. Of the remaining adults none are in

detention – they all live freely in their local communities. In total, there are now less than 240 individuals on Nauru and PNG. We have removed all the children from onshore detention that were put there by Labor. We have dealt with an unprecedented risk of foreign interference and espionage against our country, committing significant resources, including the establishment of the joint agency Counter Foreign Interference Taskforce to protect our nation and our way of life. Since strengthening the character test provision of the Migration Act in 2014, I have cancelled more than 6,300 visas of non-citizen criminals. This included cancellations for domestic violence related offences, child sex and child sexual exploitation offences, assault and armed robbery. These cancellations have made Australia a safer place. It has been a great privilege to serve as Home Affairs Minister But it is now time for a new portfolio and a new challenge. There is no greater honour than to represent the men and women of the Australian Defence Force in Government. This comes at a crucial strategic time for our country and our region. I am very much looking forward to continuing the work of my predecessor Linda Reynolds who has done an exceptional job in this portfolio. Finally, thank you to everyone who attended an Anzac Day Ceremony or Service in our community. We owe an immense debt of gratitude to the ADF men and women currently serving and our veterans who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms and it was fantastic to see local services held once again in person this year. What’s important to you? I want to know what’s important to you. I’m working hard to make our community even better but I can’t do it on my own. I need your help to make sure we get the priorities right for our community. With your help, and by working together, I know we can get the upgrades, facilities and opportunities our community needs to be even better. Get in touch Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977 to let me know your priorities for our community. Or you can drop in to my next mobile office. I am coming up to 2500 visits in my mobile office and have helped thousands of residents with local issues. If you see me out and about with my caravan, please drop in. Lord Mayor’s COVID-19 Direct Assistance As a result of the impact of COVID-19 Brisbane City Council provided $3 million in direct financial assistance to community, cultural, sporting and recreational groups leasing a Council-owned or managed community facility. This funding contributed to expenses incurred in the first six months of 2020. The program assisted the groups to rebuild and re-commence services to residents after the coronavirus pandemic. Groups were able to apply for up to $10,000 towards maintenance and operating costs to enable them to continue operation after the pandemic. I am pleased that a number of community groups in The Gap Ward accessed this funding and I have listed them below. Review of the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 On Easter Sunday this year I was pleased to launch the Review of the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001. I am passionate about the prevention of cruelty to animals and this review is an important opportunity to shape the future of the care and protection of animals in Queensland. Feedback is being sort by members of the public on issues such as:

• Mandatory reporting by veterinary professionals of animal welfare concerns; • Prohibited events, regulated surgical procedures and offence exemptions; • The use of baits and traps; • Restraining dogs in open utility vehicles and trucks; • The use of animals in science; • Inspector powers and arrangements for externally appointed inspectors; • The management of animals seized during animal welfare investigations; and • Penalties for animal cruelty.
